How to Use Quick Resume

A new highly touted feature of the Xbox Series X is Quick Resume. However, it's not a future you toggle on and off. It's one that persists as you swap though games and when you wake your console from its sleep mode.

Here's how Microsoft explains Quick Resume:

"A new feature powered by the technical capabilities and the innovative Xbox Velocity Architecture in Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, Quick Resume enables players to seamlessly switch between multiple titles and resume instantly from where you last left off."

Your Xbox shows you when Quick Resume is in action by flashing a "Quick Resume" banner on the top right of the game's loading screen.

Quick Resume and Hard Restarts

If you shut off your Xbox with sleep mode, Quick Resume will still work when you boot up the console. Quick Resume should also work with your games even after you do a hard shut down . This means shutting off your console by holding down the Xbox button for several seconds.

If you don't want the current game you have open to use Quick Resume, you can force quit the game after opening it. To force quit, hit the Xbox button to return to your home dashboard. Then press the menu button (the three lines) and scroll down to "Quit."

Selecting Quit does mean closing your game completely, so be sure that you've saved your progress if that's needed.

How to Add a Game to Quick Resume

A game's Quick Resume feature should be "activated" after you open the game. To test it, simply open another game or app. You can load into the campaign or another mode but that's not required for Quick Resume to work. Swap back to your previous game and you should see the "Quick Resume" banner on the top right of the game's launch window.

We have noticed some issues with Quick Resume and games that require your Xbox to connect to a game server.

How to use Xbox Series X Quick Resume

Here's how to use one of the best features of the Xbox Series X and Series S

Fast loading times are a major selling point of the PS5 , Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S , with all three consoles able to boot up large games in seconds rather than minutes. But only Microsoft's consoles have the ability to bounce between multiple games in mere seconds. 

This feature is called Quick Resume, and it does exactly what it says. You can have multiple games running at once, and jump between them to pick up from where you left off as if you’d simply paused the game. There’s no awkward starting again from saves or checkpoints.

Given how fast games will load from a cold start, you might wonder if Quick Resume is a big deal. But after you’ve tried it, you’re almost sure to be impressed. There’s something super satisfying about being able to bounce between games without wasting time waiting for them to shut down and boot up. 

The PS5 doesn't have an answer to Quick Resume, giving the Xbox Series X and even the cheaper, less-powerful Series S an ace in the hole in the (somewhat contrived) console wars. Here’s what you need to know about Quick Resume and how to use it. 

How does Quick Resume work?  

Quick Resume make use of Microsoft’s Xbox Velocity Architecture , which uses a combination of the custom PCIe 4.0 SSD, improved data decompression, custom APIs and Sampler Feedback Streaming (SFS, which helps render game textures more efficiently), to load games up from a frozen state.  

Essentially, the Xbox captures an "instance" of the game you're playing and stores it in the SSD. Then, using the Xbox Velocity Architecture, it can load this instance up in a matter of seconds, and drop you back in the game from exactly where you left off.  

Quick Resume can store up to five game instances in the SSD at once, which means you can jump in and out of games to your heart’s content. It is worth noting that Microsoft is still working on optimizing games to make use of Quick Resume, so some games will need to reboot from scratch if you suddenly load a new game up.

You’ll be able to tell Quick Resume is working, as a label will appear in the top right-hand side of your display when you load up a previously played game.

How to use Quick Resume 

Quick Resume is enabled by default on both the Xbox Series X and Series S. There's no need to go digging around in menus or other options to switch it on. 

To use it, simply start a game that’s compatible with Quick Resume. These should be tagged as “X/S” on their thumbnails, although some optimized games don't yet work with the Velocity Architecture. 

One you’re in a game, hit the Xbox button on the controller, then use the pop-up menu to navigate to another game and load it up. Alternatively, head to the home menu and boot up a new game from there. 

Once two games are up and running, you can simply press the Xbox button on the controller again and select the other game - or games - that you have recently used. Doing that will load up the selected game, with a few seconds of cover art taking up the screen. It'll then drop you back in right where you left off, albeit with the pause screen or main menu open. 

Quick Resume will still work if the Xbox Series X has been switched off, or even unplugged, which feels more like magic than clever Microsoft engineering. 

Do bear in mind that if you try to have more than five games in Quick Resume states, the feature will end up rebooting some games from scratch, without any warning. As Quick Resume is still under development, so there are a few bugs and instances where it hasn't worked, so make sure you still save your games as you go along. We can expect the feature to get a little smoother and more transparent as it progresses. 

And don’t try and use Quick Resume in a multiplayer game mode, as you'll get booted from your match.  (Admittedly, we’re not sure who’s going to momentarily duck out of a frenetic deathmatch to go exploring in Ori and the WIll of the Wisps.)

If you want to purge games from your Quick Resume memory, then simply navigate to them in the main menu, hit the options button on the Xbox Wireless Controller and select the “Quit” option. That shuts the game down completely, meaning it'll need to be booted up anew when you play it again. 

In short, Quick Resume is trivially easy to use, and it set to get a lot better as more games can can tap into it. We’re not going to say it’s Microsoft's crowning achievement, but it’s certainly a very neat feature of the new Xbox consoles.

With Xbox Quick Resume you can suspend several games at once to keep them running in the background, even when the console is turned off. That means when you turn your console back on, or switch to a game you were playing earlier, you can pick up exactly where you left off with no loading or rebooting the game. It's a very convenient Xbox Series X feature if you need to suddenly stop playing to do something else, and is the result of the powerful Xbox Velocity Architecture. If you've picked up a solid Xbox Series X deal and now have a few new games on the go that you might be quickly switching between, here's what you need to know about the Xbox Quick Resume feature.

How to set up and use Xbox Quick Resume

Handily, Xbox Quick Resume is automatically enabled by default , so you don't need to do anything to set it up as it's already quietly working away in the background. To use this feature, simply hit the Xbox button then select a new game to play, which will place your current game into a suspended state. When you want to return to a previous game, select it from your library and you'll almost instantly resume from where you left off.

This feature will work seamlessly across multiple games, but if you want to bypass Xbox Quick Resume for whatever reason then you can press the Xbox button and highlight the game from the guide, before pressing the Menu button and choosing the Quit option. This will fully shut the game down and remove it from your current Xbox Quick Resume line-up, so the next time you start it, you'll need to wait for it to load up again.

Does Xbox Quick Resume work with online games

Due to the nature of online games, the way the Xbox Quick Resume function works with them will depending on the game. Some games may allow you to jump back into the same game mode you were playing before, perhaps even the same match if you're fast enough, while others may kick you back to the lobby or out of the multiplayer mode entirely. As there are many more variables involved compared to using Xbox Quick Resume for single player games, your experience will depend on how the developers have set up their online system to deal with suspending and resuming.

Tired of waiting for your favorite Xbox games to load? Microsoft's Xbox Quick Resume feature eliminates the need to revisit the title screen on supported games, instantly throwing you back into the action.

Next-gen consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S have the ability to boot games up ultra-fast. Aside from graphical and performance enhancements, it's one of the main selling points people look for in the latest line-up of consoles.

However, the Xbox Series X|S gains the upper hand by allowing you to switch between multiple games, right where you left off.

What Is Xbox Series X|S Quick Resume?

Leveraging Microsoft's Xbox Velocity Architecture, players can easily switch from one game to another quickly , leaving their current game saved in the state it was left in.

While it's important to save your games regularly, Xbox Quick Resume means you can return to the game at the same point, as if your game was frozen in time. Your gameplay won't change, and you can instantly pick up the game bypassing any launch or menu screens.

Full-memory Xbox Series X|S titles can use up to three save states, meaning you can quickly resume multiple titles that you're currently playing. Although, according to Microsoft's Quick Resume support page , you can resume more titles depending on the console:

Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox console titles use less memory, so the consoles can store more than three when these titles are saved.

The Quick Resume feature also applies to online games. However, if the game is server-based, you may find you get pushed back to the game's menu if the online match or game has finished, timed out, or disconnected.

Which Xbox Games Support Quick Resume?

Most Xbox Series X|S titles support Xbox Quick Resume. But, if you're not sure, you can easily check by launching a game.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide; in the top right-hand corner, there will be a Quick Resume banner. This indicates the game uses the feature and will save the game's current state when you switch to another game and return to it later on.

How to Use the Quick Resume Feature on Xbox Series X|S

Using Quick Resume on an Xbox Series X|S is simple; you don't need to activate or install anything for it to work. Here's how to use it:

• Launch an Xbox Quick Resume-compatible game.
• Once in a game, press the Xbox button and use the guide to launch another game.
• Press the Xbox button once you're in another game, then select the previous game you were playing.

Quick Resume will work even after the Xbox has been in sleep mode, has been turned off, or unplugged.

How to Remove Games From Quick Resume Memory

There may be occasions where you don't want to use Quick Resume, or you want to replace your existing set of Quick Resume games with other titles.

To do this, press the Xbox button to launch the guide. Navigate to the game you want to remove, then press the Options button on your Xbox controller. From here, you can select Quit to shut the game down entirely.

When you launch the game again, it will boot from scratch, allowing you to continue or load your previous saves.

Anyone who’s been lucky enough to snatch up an Xbox Series X or a Series S may have heard of Quick Resume, the new feature that allows you to jump between games without restarting them.

Keep reading to find out what Quick Resume is and how you can use it to make the most out of the latest Xbox console.

What is Quick Resume?

Quick Resume is a feature that takes advantage of the Xbox Velocity Architecture in the next-gen Xbox console, allowing you to easily switch between games without needing to reload the application.

So if you wanted to switch from one game to another, the consoles will keep the save of the current game, so when you return you can pick up right where you left off.

You can do this with a maximum of three store saves at once, meaning you can have three games opened at once to flip through if you wanted.

Also keep in mind that while Quick Resume does work for online games, you might not pick up exactly where you left off in some titles, and some may push you to the menu instead of loading the game up straight away.

Microsoft does recommend that you do save your game each time you do something else on your console, as losing a save for Quick Resume will result in all unsaved data being lost.

It’s pretty easy to start jumping through your games; just press the Xbox button on your controller and then select another game from the home screen.

You can also use the recently played titles option within the Guide itself.

If the game that you’ve clicked is using Quick Resume and can be resumed quickly, the top right corner will house a little logo that says Quick Resume.

Some games do not support Quick Resume just yet, but Microsoft claimed it is working to add Quick Resume support for more games.

How to Switch Between Games With Quick Resume on Xbox Series X/S

If you like to bounce between a few games at a time, Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Series S have a treat for you. A feature called Quick Resume lets you start playing one game, then switch over to another, picking up right where you left off in seconds—without having to close out of one game and reload the other from scratch.

Essentially, Quick Resume takes the content of the Xbox's RAM and dumps it to the hard drive—not unlike when your computer goes into hibernation. This preserves the exact moment in time you exited the game, with your character standing in the exact same spot.

Then, when you switch back to that title later on, you are brought right back to where you stopped, as if no time has passed. And thanks to the insanely fast SSD in the Xbox, it all happens in a few seconds; No relaunching, loading, or waiting. Here's how the feature works.

How Many Games Can Be Suspended at Once?

Quick Resume can store up to three Series X/S games at a time. However, If you have any backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox games running, you can get a few additional titles running at the same time. In a post-launch update, Microsoft showed that the feature can hold five (recent) games at one time.

What Games Are Supported?

While there is no official list of supported titles, Microsoft says it is available across "most" of its most-played games. However, Quick Resume does not work with all games. More games are being made compatible all the time, so it's unlikely you will run into any issues unless you're playing something very obscure.

Also, for obvious reasons, online multiplayer games are not supported. This means that you can't log into an online match, then suspend the game and play something else mid-match.

How to Switch Between Games

You don't have to do anything special to use Quick Resume—there are no settings to change, no requirements to remember, or any combination of buttons to press. Instead, it just works: Press the Xbox button on your controller and launch another game from the Guide Menu.

From the Guide Menu, you will see your most recent games and apps in a list, but you can also click My Games & Apps , then choose See All to view other games you have installed but opened less recently. Alternatively, you can go directly to the home screen and select a new game from there.

How to Manage Your Quick Resume Games

In a post-launch update, Xbox introduced a Quick Resume Group that will list all the games you currently have suspended in one place. For easy access, make sure this group is added to your home screen. Click the View button on your controller when on the home screen, then click Add More to Home and make sure the Quick Resume Group is added.

You can open your suspended game if you hover over its icon and click the Menu button on the controller. You can choose Pin to Quick Resume to pin the title in the Quick Resume Group menu.

You can also remove a game from Quick Resume and exit out of it completely by navigating to it in the Guide menu or on the home screen. Press the Menu button, then select Quit (when in a game) or Remove From Quick Resume (when

Remember to Save Your Game

It should be noted that Quick Resume is not a replacement for saving your game. While the feature saves your place in the game, it does not actually create new recoverable save data. The same golden gaming rule applies as it always has—save manually and save often.

Suspended games should remain even if you shut down and unplug your console, but glitches have been known to happen. In other words, don't expect Quick Resume to work flawlessly every time you hop from one game to another. Keep saving regularly, and consider it a nice bonus that you can instantly jump back into your Forza Horizon 5 race after your kid's done playing Minecraft.

How The Xbox Series X’s 'Quick Resume' Feature Works (And Doesn’t Work)

Among all of the next-gen features touted for the Xbox Series X (and S), few are more promising than Quick Resume. On paper, Quick Resume grants you the ability to juggle several games in a suspended state at a system level, at which point you can load them in seconds, picking up exactly where you left off. It is—and I sincerely apologize if you’ve heard this pun before—a potential game-changer.

The idea of a flawlessly functional Quick Resume sure sounds utopian. In reality, while not quite utopian, Quick Resume is pretty cool. There are just some wrinkles to be mindful of.

You can juggle five games with Quick Resume.

A round of previews from earlier in the fall revealed that Quick Resume could sustain five or so game states at any given time. I’ve largely found that to be the case. Switching between five games— Assassin’s Creed , Tell Me Why , Halo: The Master Chief Collection , Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater , and Wizard of Legend —all in one session has proved no issue. There seems to be a time limit, though. When I tried to jump back into Tell Me Why days after I last played it, I had to reopen the game from scratch. Thank the coding gods for autosave!

That said, don’t count on Quick Resume to balance your entire library at once. Juggling six games or more seems to cause the feature to sputter out, though not in any notable way. It’s more that, without warning or a heads up of any sort, some games just need to go through the entire startup phase the next time you open them up. (I’ve found that larger games tend to get dropped first.)

There’s another caveat. As noted in our review of Microsoft’s new machines , Quick Resume is still a work in progress and has been partially deactivated as launch day looms. Microsoft informed us on Wednesday that they’d discovered an issue with some games that are receiving next-gen upgrades; as a result, Quick Resume support has been temporarily turned off for those games. Sure enough, we’re now seeing it work with fewer games. Kotaku editor-in-chief Stephen Totilo has been testing it out on the Series S. It works just fine for some games ( Batman Arkham Knight , the new Assassin’s Creed , the awesome Tony Hawk remasters) but not at all for others ( Gears 5 , Forza Horizon 4 ). Oddly, just last night, I was able to use Quick Resume to swap to both of those games on my Series X—but earlier in the week, I wasn’t able to do so with Forza Horizon 4 . Things are clearly in flux. Microsoft PR tells us that a system update timed to launch day should address some of this, but that games will also need individual updates, and it sounds like those updates will be coming after launch. We don’t know the timeframe.

Quick Resume doesn’t work for every game.

Quick Resume functions automatically in the background. You don’t have to toggle it on in the settings or otherwise dig through an arcane web of menus to activate it. It just sort of happens—or doesn’t happen.

Microsoft has not bothered to make it obvious if a game supports Quick Resume, perhaps because they just assumed it’d be available for the vast majority of games. From what we can tell, you’ll figure out which ones work by simply trying to use Quick Resume with them. After you’ve started a game and try switching to it with Quick Resume, you’ll see a badge on the upper right as the game loads in (takes maybe nine seconds). The badge even has a neat little “play” symbol, to really drive the point home:

You sort of have to play a memory game in your head about which games do and don’t support the feature. (You’ll pick it up quickly.) As far as I can tell, there’s no tidy menu on the Xbox UI that shows you which games your system is currently juggling with Quick Resume. You can still switch between games on the fly by using the universal Xbox menu—just like you can with the Xbox One—but you’ll get taken back to the title screen of any game that doesn’t work with Quick Resume. Remember that before trying to bounce between games with abandon. And make sure to manually save often!

With some games, Quick Resume straight-up doesn’t work. For example: Whenever I’ve tried to switch to Cake Bash —an awesome free-for-all party game that’s more or less a Mario Party mini-game compendium on a sugar rush—I’ve had to go through all of the startup screens each time. At the moment, the same thing is true for Destiny 2 and The Outer Worlds .

Keep in mind that all of this testing was conducted during a pre-release window. Microsoft says some games that don’t support Quick Resume will add functionality for the feature after launch. (We’ve reached out for a full list of games that currently do not and will not work with Quick Resume but, at press time, Microsoft did not provide one.)

You’ll get booted from multiplayer or other online-connected games.

Trying to make use of Quick Resume during a multiplayer game might be a little weird. How many people are really planning on dipping out of a round of Halo to, say, repaint a car in Forza Horizon 4 before jumping back in the fray? Still, the point remains: If you try to switch games during a Halo 4 match, expect a one-way trip to the lobby.

Destiny 2 , a multiplayer game that requires constant connectivity but is often enjoyed as a single-player, player-vs.-environment experience, is even more strict. Even when I’ve just been hovering in orbit—and not standing on any shared world alongside other players—I’ve been sent right back to the title screen. Solo Guardians, take note.

Your game stays suspended even if you unplug your console.

When Microsoft first made the Series X available to press, during those early fall previews, you might have heard word that Quick Resume works even if the console is cut off from power. In my experience, I’ve found that to be the case—to a point.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve left my Series X unplugged for a half an hour (or more) on multiple occasions. Each time I’ve returned to a once-dormant Xbox Series X, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has had to start up fresh. With other games, though, it’s seamless—and doesn’t even spur longer load times. One of the games I was testing took about 8.1 seconds to switch to with Quick Resume. Following a period of total power-off, that actually dipped to 7.5 seconds. For Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 , those figures were 8.4 and 8.2. With Wizard of Legend , the best cooperative roguelike, they were 5.2 and 4.9.

As with the multiplayer thing, the use case here isn’t enormous. But as a failsafe against unpredictable circumstances—say, power outages, chew-happy pets, or children who have a penchant for unplugging random cables—it’s nice to have.

That, at the end of the day, is the selling point of Quick Resume. It won’t change your life in some immediately obvious way. But then you’ll pivot from busting heads in Assassin’s Creed to busting heads in Gears 5 . You’ll realize how little time you spent sitting there, waiting for your game to load. And then it’ll become apparent that Quick Resume is one of those features you never knew you wanted, and one that, when it works, works exactly as intended: a small thing that allows you to spend your entire time playing games actually playing games. Unless you try to bounce between seven games at once.

How do I turn off quick resume?

I play alot if overwatch and I just got the series x but I've been really annoyed because the queue always glitches and I can't find a game. The normal fix to this for me is to restart my game but when I click quit it doesn't restart the game propley it takes my back to the queue times where I can't find a game. Please help.

Hello, I have done everything you said but nothing is working I still can't find a game. It says connection to server error do you have any other solutions?

I have to deinstall and reinstall the game to get over this error! Hope you figured it out by yourself till now.

Quick resume cannot be disabled at this time.

Phil Spencer did say he would ask the team to explore it

Be aware that it may not be possible, as it is at the core of the system, and likely also is not a high priority over more critical features

Following Georges’s steps will only remove the current Quick resume. It does not turn it off, and a new one will be made the next time you start the game

You need to hit start on the game and go to quit when you finish playing. This will delete the QR. automatically

This doesnt disable quick resume. It just ends the existing in-suspension simulation. Starting the game again causes another quick resume to start. Your answer is functionally pointless and factually misguiding.

This is a incredibly inconvenient and frustrating feature, it would have been as simple as giving us one button to push in options somewhere. Many games these days have glitches, glitches that most times can be quickly fixed with a reboot of the game, having to hop through all these hoops when you guys could have just given us a button is a little silly, not a major problem, but it is pretty annoying, especially since it's something new you just forced on us.

i would really like to be able to turn off quick resume its awful it will bog your system down and would just be nice to turn off if i want to. but i cant find anything anywhere to figure out how to do that...

Quick resume does not bog your system down. The entire console is designed around it which is why it is hard to turn off. It just keeps RAM active or does a dump to dedicated hard drive space.

It is a very frustrating feature, it breaks almost every game that I play. To the point that I am in the habit of removing the quick resume session before starting any game. I can't think of anything I have played in the last 6 months that quick resume doesn't break online functionality leaving the game unusable until forcibly closed.

It is such a cool idea, and it would be amazing if it worked. In it's current state having to remember to quit the game before starting a game is a pretty bad user experience.

Having a setting to disable quick resume would be awesome. Although I think 95% of my problems with quick resume would be resolved by removing them when the console powers off or expires them after 20-30 minutes. Online sessions aren't going to remain valid for any longer than that anyways.

I also haven't had a single useful use for Quick Resume. Either my Forza session is completely screwed when i start because of quick Resume, or, if it's a singleplayer, i start where i left off several days ago, no idea what i was doing at the time, i always have to close all quick Resume entries whenever i start a gaming session, it's only an annoyance and has no value for me at all.

How to use Xbox Quick Resume

Available on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, Quick Resume is an automatic feature that has great potential for time-poor multitasking gamers.

Microsoft’s next-gen consoles are finally here and amid speedy hardware, there are also some neat features that help to set them apart from their similarly named Xbox One predecessors. Both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S have a focus on low-latency gaming with zippy loading times care of the custom internal storage.

But one of the better features that may be initially confusing is Quick Resume, which is incredibly convenient and has some depth to understanding how it works.

What is Quick Resume?

While the next-gen Xbox user interface will look incredibly familiar to anyone who’s used an Xbox One in recent years, Quick Resume is an automated feature designed to let you easily pick up where you left off. Quick Resume will automatically remember where you were at in the last few games you played, letting you jump back into a game in under 10 seconds.

How many games does Quick Resume support

Quick Resume can technically support about 12 games, but it was closer to four to six games in our tests. It’s not available for all games, though, and you’ll notice that online-only games like Sea of Thieves and Ark: Survival Evolved won’t drop you back to where you left off, though they will get you back to the main menu faster. Assumedly this is because online games can’t be paused in the same way that offline games can be.

What power states does Quick Resume work in?

Whether you’re in the instant-on (low power) or power-saving state, Quick Resume will drop you back to where you left off with the last handful of games that you played. In the past, these type of quick-resume features on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 meant putting the console into a low-power or hibernating state. With Xbox Series X, you can completely power down and even disconnect the power and still pick up where you left off with Quick Resume.

How do I pick which games Quick Resume works with?

Developers and Microsoft ultimately choose which games are supported in Quick Resume, but it was every game (outside of the online-game disclaimer above) that we tested for our Xbox Series X review . The trick is to ensure that the last handful of games you played are the ones you want to Quick Resume. If you’re treating game switching like scrolling through Netflix titles , the games you opened first likely won’t be ready to Quick Resume.

Does Quick Resume work on Xbox Series S?

Yes, but the main limitation you may come across on Xbox Series S, though, is the smaller internal storage. For Series S owners, you may not be able to take advantage of it on as many games (compared to the Xbox Series X), depending on how many larger games you have installed on the internal storage.

Does Quick Resume work on external storage drives?

It does. Whether you’re using the official Seagate Storage Expansion Card or a compatible USB 3.1 external drive, Quick Resume will still work for games stored here. The only disclaimer is that next-gen games require next-gen storage, so only supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games will be playable (and Quick Resumable) from a USB 3.1 drive.

How to use Xbox energy-saving mode

Quick Answer: Your Xbox Series X|S has two power options; Shutdown (energy saving) and Sleep. Switching between them takes seconds and can be done through the General Settings option.

The new Xbox energy-saving mode takes a big step towards helping gamers become more eco-friendly.

Microsoft now considers the Xbox to be the first ‘Carbon Aware’ games console, thanks to last year’s Xbox system update . This introduced a new low-power mode, as well as new options to customize the console’s power settings further.

How to find the Xbox energy-saving mode

Finding and turning on the new Xbox energy-saving mode is extremely straightforward. It only takes a few seconds to switch between the Xbox shutdown (energy saving) and sleep (full power) modes.

• Navigate to Settings (cog on home screen) > General .
• Select Power options , then Shutdown (energy saving) from the menu.

Once you are in the console’s power options, you will not only be able to switch between the standard and new power-saving modes, but also get an overview of how much power you are saving.

You can even make more advanced changes to your console’s power options.

Xbox’s energy-saving mode reduces the power consumption from 10-15W down to 0.5W, marking an impressive leap towards becoming an eco-friendly console, while also helping to save you money on your bills.

Does the Xbox energy-saving mode impact you?

Reducing the Xbox’s power consumption saves energy. In doing so, you’ll be pleased to know this doesn’t impact the console’s performance. It only has a minor impact on certain features.

When in energy-saving mode, the console will take around 20 seconds at most to fully boot up. Considering the impact on your household bills, it is a relatively small price to pay.

Features such as Quick Resume will still work as normal, letting you jump straight back into a game where you left off.

The only real downside is that games will no longer download when the console is turned off when running your Xbox in energy-saving mode. But, if you’ve got faster fiber internet , the chances are this won’t affect you.

You can use the Xbox’s Manage Updates screen to manually start game and app updates. This allows you to choose what games/apps you want to update and when.

I’ve personally been using the Xbox’s new energy-saving mode since it was released back in the start of 2023, and haven’t found it to cause any issues or inconvenience me in any way at all. And as someone with severe ADHD who wants things instantly, that’s a big seal of approval.

Customizing your Xbox’s power options

As well as using the Xbox energy-saving mode to reduce power consumption, there are also a few customizations you can make to push your energy savings further.

In the power options menu, select Customize power options , where you will see a list of other power-based options designed to help save even more energy.

• Turn off after (inactivity): This setting will let you choose how many minutes of inactivity the console will wait before shutting itself down.
• Turn of after (Music & video): This setting will let you choose how many hours of music or video will be played before the console turns itself off.
• Keep my console up to date: Updates consume power, both at the console and server. By turning this off, you can choose to download Xbox system updates at a time when renewable energy is more commonly used in your area.
• Keep my games and apps up to date: This setting will completely disable automatic updates for all your games and apps, letting you choose when you want to update them, and saving energy by not updating games that you have left installed, but are no longer playing.

The final customizable power options are the TV & A/V power options, which come with another set of features that let you control your console’s power state through other connected devices, and vice versa.

HDMI-CEC settings require a compatible HDMI cable and work in a very similar way to HDMI ARC , which is also used to connect devices in a similar way.

2/27/24 IMPORTANT: New dates for the end of non-security updates for Windows 11, version 22H2

The new end date is June 24, 2025 for Windows 11, version 22H2 Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session editions. Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions of version 22H2 will receive non-security preview updates until June, 26, 2024. 

After these dates, only cumulative monthly security updates will continue for the supported editions of Windows 11, version 22H2. The initial date communicated for this change was February 27, 2024. Based on user feedback, this date has been changed so more customers can take advantage of our continuous innovations .

Copilot in Windows (in preview)

New! You can ask Copilot in Windows (in preview) for help ten times when you sign in to Windows using a local account. After that, you must sign in using a Microsoft account (MSA) or a Microsoft Entra ID account (formerly Azure Active Directory (Azure AD)). To sign in, use the link in the dialog that appears in Copilot in Windows. If you do not sign in, some Copilot features might not work. To learn more, see Welcome to Copilot in Windows and Manage Copilot in Windows .

Lock screen 

New! This update adds more content to your lock screen. Sports, traffic, and finance content will appear along with weather. To turn on this feature, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen .

Note This feature might not be available to all users because it will roll out gradually.

This update addresses an issue that affects the Settings app. It stops responding when you use it to remove Bluetooth devices.

This update addresses an issue that affects USB audio. It fails on some processors. This occurs after you pause, play, or resume from sleep.

This update addresses an issue that affects the Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels setting. The app labels in the taskbar sometimes do not have the correct length, which cuts off the label text. This occurs when this setting is set to “When taskbar is full” or “Never.”

Voice access

New! You can now use voice access with the following languages:

French (France, Canada)

Spanish (Spain, Mexico)

When you turn on voice access for the first time, Windows will ask you to download a speech model. You might not find a speech model that matches your display language. You can still use voice access in English (US). You can always choose a different language from Settings > Language on the voice access bar.

New! You can now use all voice access features on multiple displays. These include number and grid overlays that, in the past, you could only use on the primary display. While you are using the grid overlay on a screen, you can quickly switch to another display. To do that, use the alphabet or NATO phonetic in your command. For example, “B” or “Bravo” are both valid for the display that is assigned that letter.

New! This update introducesvoice shortcuts or custom commands. You can use them to create your own commands in the supported English dialects. To start, say “what can I say” and click the “Voice shortcuts” tab on the left panel. You can also use the command “show voice shortcuts” to open the Voice shortcuts page. Click Create new shortcut . Use your voice or other input to create a command. Give it a name and select one or more actions. After you fill in the necessary information, click Create . Your command is now ready to use. To view all the voice shortcuts you have created, go to the command help page or use the voice command, “show voice shortcuts.”

New! You can now listen to a preview of the ten natural voices before you download them. See the Narrator section of the September 2023 update for the list. These voices use modern , on-device text-to-speech. Once you download them, they work without an internet connection. However, to listen to a preview, you need an internet connection. To add and use one of the natural voices, follow the steps below.

To open Narrator settings, press the WIN+CTRL+N hotkey.

Under Narrator’s voice, select Add , which is next to Add natural voices .

Select the voice you want to install. You can install all voices, but you must install them one at a time.

The preview will play automatically as you browse the list.

If you like the preview, click Download and Install . The new voice downloads and is ready for use in a few minutes, depending on your internet download speed.

In Narrator settings, select your preferred voice from the menu in Narrator’s voice > Choose a voice .

New! This update adds a new keyboard command to move between the images on a screen. Now, you can use the keys G or Shift+G to move forward or backward between images in Scan mode (Narrator key+space bar).

New! This update improves Narrator’s detection of text in images, which includes handwriting. It also improves the descriptions of images. To use this feature, you must have an active internet connection. You must also turn on the setting to get image descriptions in Narrator settings. To try this experience, select an image and press the Narrator key+CTRL+D.

New! In Microsoft Word, Narrator will announce the presence of bookmarks and draft or resolved comments. It also tells you if accessibility suggestions exist when it reads text in the file.

New! You can now use voice access to open applications, dictate text, and interact with elements on the screen. You can also use your voice to command Narrator. For example, you can tell it to, “speak faster,” “read next line,” and so on. To get started, search for “voice access” in Windows search and set it up.

Windows share

New! This update changes the apps that appear in the Windows share window. The account you use to sign in affects the apps that are in “Share using.” For example, if you use a Microsoft account (MSA) to sign in, you will see Microsoft Teams (free). When you use a Microsoft Entra ID account (formerly Azure Active Directory) to sign in, your Microsoft Teams (work or school) contacts show instead.

New! The Windows share window now supports sharing with WhatsApp in the “Share using” section. If you do not have WhatsApp installed, you can install it from the Windows share window.

Nearby Share

New! This update affects how Nearby Share turns on and off. You can use quick settings or the Settings app to turn on Nearby Share. If you do and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are off, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will turn on to make Nearby Share work as you expect. If you turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, Nearby Share turns off as well.

New! This update improves Nearby Share transfer speed for users on the same network. Before, users had to be on the same private network. Now, users must be on the same public or private network. You can use quick settings to turn on Nearby Share. Right-click a local file in File Explorer and choose “Share.” Then choose to share to a device listed in Nearby Share in the Windows share window.

New! You can now give your device a more friendly name to identify it when sharing. Go to Settings > System > Nearby sharing . There, you can rename your device.

New! This update helps you to learn about the Cast feature and discover when it is available; see the examples in the list below. To cast means to send content that is on your device’s screen to a nearby PC, TV, or other external displays. This happens wirelessly.

You might often switch between windows to complete a task or use Snap Assist to organize your screen space. When you multitask like this, a notification will suggest that you use Cast.

The Cast flyout menu in quick settings gives you more help to find nearby displays, fix connections, and more.

Snap Layouts

New! This update adds suggestions to   Snap Layouts .  They help you to instantly snap multiple app windows together.

New! You can hover over the minimize or maximize button of an app (WIN+Z) to open the layout box. When you do, app icons will display various layout options. Use them to help you to choose the best layout option.

Windows 365 Boot

New! This update adds dedicated mode for Windows 365 Boot . When you sign in on your company-owned device, doing that also signs you in to your Windows 365 Cloud PC. This occurs using passwordless authentication, like Windows Hello for Business.

New! This new dedicated mode also provides the fast account switcher experience. With it, you can quickly switch profiles and sign in. You can also personalize the experience for your username and password. This includes choosing a custom display picture for the lock screen, storing your username, and more.

New! A company can customize what users see on the screen when they sign in to Windows 365 Boot. In shared mode, you can add company branding from Microsoft Intune.

New! This update adds a fail fast mechanism for Windows 365 Boot. It helps while you are signing in to your Cloud PC. Thesmart logic tells you to address network issues or complete app setup so that Windows 365 Boot does not fail.

New! You can now manage the settings of your physical (local) PC from your Cloud PC. Windows 365 Boot makes it easy to directly access and manage sound, display, and other device settings.

Windows 365 Switch

New! It is now easier for Windows 365 Switch to disconnect. You can use your local PC to disconnect from your Cloud PC. Go to Local PC > Task view . Right-click the Cloud PC button and select Disconnect . This update also adds tooltips to the Cloud PC Start menu. They appear on the options for disconnecting and signing out and help you to learn how each one works.

New! This update adds desktop indicators for Windows 365 Switch.You will see the term “Cloud PC” and “Local PC” on the desktop indicator when you switch between them.

New! The time to connect to Windows 365 Frontline Cloud PC from Windows 365 Switch might be long. While you wait, the screen will show you the connection status and the timeout indicator for the Cloud PC. If there is an error, use the new copy button on the error screen to copy the correlation ID. This helps to address the issue faster.

New!  This update affects Windows Hello for Business. IT admins can now use mobile device management (MDM) to turn off the prompt that appears when users sign in to an Entra-joined machine. To do this, they can turn on the “DisablePostLogonProvisioning” policy setting. After a user signs in, provisioning is off for Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices.

New! This update improves the Remote Desktop Session Host. You can now set up its “clipboard redirection” policy to work in a single direction from the local computer to the remote computer. You can also reverse that order.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.3364 and 22631.3364

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates  and  Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions .

Install this update

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages .

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer ( wusa.exe ) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.
