At&t wireless, unlimited talk, text, and data..

America's fastest network.

Low, multi-line prices.

AT&T is a top-ranking network provider that offers competitive cell phone plans for businesses of all sizes.

When looking at AT&T's strongest competitors T-Mobile and Verizon , the carrier does fall short in affordability, speed, and network coverage . Currently, Verizon leads the race as the carrier with the most network coverage across the United States. However, AT&T does provide better speed, coverage, and more features than T-Mobile, and its plans are more affordable than Verizon.

AT&T provides users with good coverage, a wide selection of plans and smartphones, and good international perks . In addition, the carrier is extremely accessible as the network provider has stores in almost every city. AT&T is also ideal for businesses and users that require strong streaming quality.

AT&T's plans are not the most affordable options available, especially for startups and businesses with small budgets. Furthermore, the carrier does have relatively low data deprioritization thresholds on unlimited plans, and the carrier reserves the right to throttle data speeds for all users during peak periods.

Reputation:

Most customers have been impressed with AT&T's quick setup and connection process. However, we did find more than five reviews where customers had issues with billing. In these cases, customers were either mistakenly billed or overcharged for services. Furthermore, AT&T's customer service needs some improvement, as customers have complained about poor support both online and in-store.

AT&T vs. T-Mobile:

T-Mobile and AT&T both offer similar features, such as unlimited data, text, and talk, and no roaming charges in Mexico and Canada. T-Mobile is the more affordable plan, charging $60.00 per month compared to $65.00 with AT&T. AT&T features Call Protect Basic for compatible devices; however, T-Mobile does offer greater network coverage.

AT&T vs. T-Mobile Comparison:

At&t vs. verizon:.

AT&T offers unlimited data, talk, and text, standard definition video streaming, and no roaming charges in Canada and Mexico for $65.00 per month, per line for its Unlimited Starter plan. Verizon offers similar features, including unlimited 4G LTE data (slower speed) and 480p DVD-quality streaming, on its Unlimited Start plan for $5.00 more than AT&T. However, both provide additional perks like AT&T's Call Protect Basic service and Verizon's free Apple subscription for the first six months.

AT&T vs. Verizon Comparison:

Business plans:, at&t mobile share plus for business:.

Recognizing that every business is different, AT&T created their Share Plus plan to accommodate businesses of all sizes and their individual communication needs. With this plan, you can share data to 10 or 25 phones, tablets, and other devices. Other perks include rollover data, stream saver, and unlimited talk and text.

AT&T offers a total of six Share Plus plans, with prices ranging between $50.00 and $750.00 per month, depending on the amount of data and phone lines your business requires.

Add $20/mo. for each line for a smartphone with a two year service commitment.

Phone lines are limited to 10 lines for the first three plans (3G - 20GB). However, with the last three plans (30GB - 120GB), businesses can purchase additional lines for $15.00 per line.

Add Devices:

Plan includes:.

  • Shareable data.
  • Rollover Data.
  • Stream saver.
  • Unlimited Talk & Text.
  • Mobile Hot Spot/Tethering Use.
  • Suspected spam and fraud alerts.

AT&T Business Unlimited:

AT&T offers three Business Unlimited plans, which feature 5G-enabled technology, unlimited data, talk, and text, as well as HD streaming. The AT&T Business Unlimited plan comes in three variations: Starter, Performance, and Elite.

Unlimited Starter:

The Starter plan is AT&T's lowest priced plan, with prices starting at $65.00 per month for one line. However, this price may decrease to $35.00 with the AutoPay and paperless billing discount. This plan is best suited for startups and small businesses who only require basic features, such as standard definition video streaming, unlimited domestic data, talk, and text on up to 10 eligible devices, as well as unlimited talk and text to Canada and Mexico.

Unlimited Performance:

The Performance plan starts at $75.00 per month for one line and comes equipped with the exact same features as the Starter plan, including unlimited text, talk, and data, both domestic and in Canada and Mexico. However, the Performance does include a few additional features, such as HD video streaming (with Stream Saver turned off), 30GB mobile hotspot data per line, and access to 5G+ and 5G service where each is available.

Unlimited Elite:

The Elite plan is the perfect fit for streamers and businesses that require fast internet. The Elite plan features 5G-enabled technology, fast tracker, 100GB mobile hotspot data per line, HD and 4K Ultra HD video streaming, as well as unlimited text, talk, and data.

Unlimited Business Pricing:

For all plans, add $25/mo. for each smartphone line with a 2-year service commitment. Each plan offers 10 lines, with prices ranging between $65.00 and $400.00, depending on the plan you choose. Each plan also includes an array of iOS and Android smartphone options, as well as standard flip phones.

Unlimited Tablet Plan   **TOP PICK**

Top Pick Star

However, there's also a little-known standalone unlimited data tablet plan, which is $30/month that can be purchased ala carte without other lines of service.

There is little information available on the current details of the plan as it's not listed on their business page, we have found an official PDF from AT&T Business describing the plan . The plan has network management after 22GB of usage, includes some high-speed mobile hotspot use (assumed to be at 10GB), and HD video streaming (if Video Management is turned off).

Note that the price of this plan increased from $20/month to $30/month in early 2023.

It is listed in AT&T's system as "AT&T Unlimited Tablet." Previous versions were called "Unlimited For iPad" and "Unlimited for Tablet." You'll have to find a rep who knows about this plan over the phone or in a corporate store to activate it on a cellular-enabled tablet.

This is a post-paid plan for tablets only, with a $50 activation fee.

Wireless Broadband

Wireless broadband plans   **top pick**.

Top Pick Notes : The Wireless Broadband Plans include unlimited data, with different price points for different speed thresholds. They include 5G access and can be used with  AT&T compatible cellular embedded routers or mobile hotspots that have at least a Cat-11  cellular modem. While they are intended for business customers, they are eligible for mobile use.

AT&T offers a lineup of Wireless Broadband plans which are tiered-speed data plans for hotspots and routers. They are intended to be a primary, failover, or temporary connection for business needs and an easy-to-set-up option for new and remote business locations. They include unlimited data, are priced by the rated speed cap and prioritization threshold, and all include 5G access.

They also come with a bucket of priority data for use with business-specific applications like point-of-sale terminals, inventory management software, kiosks, ATMs, etc.

When first introduced, these plans were restricted to only being used for fixed locations. But in 2021, that restriction was removed, and they are now eligible for mobile use.

  • Ultra (100 Mbps) - $95/month (Requires a Cat-18 or higher device)
  • Pro (50 Mbps) - $75/month (Requires a Cat-18 or higher device)
  • Core (25 Mbps) - $65/month (Requires a Cat-11 or higher device)

Prices reflect $5/month discounts for AutoPay and paperless billing.

Plan Limitations

The Business Wireless Broadband plans include some specific limitations you should know:

Eligibility: All Wireless Broad accounts are for Business customers only and require a credit check on an SSN for sole proprietors or the federal tax ID for a business.

Eligible Devices:

  • "Plans are limited to one CRU line and require a qualified data-only wireless router or mobile hotspot device (sold separately) using business applications."
  • Our testing and other user reports indicate that AT&T is actively enforcing these device minimums - including when you swap the SIM to a lower-category device.
  • Plan Types Available: Data
  • Devices Permitted: AT&T compatible cellular embedded router or mobile hotspot with a Cat-11/18 or higher modem
  • High-Speed Mobile Hotspot Use:  Yes, all data is hotspot data
  • Ultra: 100 Mbps
  • Pro: 50 Mbps
  • Core: 25 Mbps
  • Ultra: 50GB
  • Ultra: After 175GB
  • Pro: After 125GB
  • Core: After 100GB
  • Video Streaming Resolution: 4K UHD (With Video Management disabled)
  • International Roaming: No, for US use only.
  • From the fine print: "Excessive Off-Net Usage: You get an off-net (roaming) usage allowance for each service (see Business Agreement). If you exceed the allowance, your service(s) maybe restricted or terminated."
  • Lines permitted per account: Not specified

Other Data Plans

Business dataconnect plans.

These are the business versions of the consumer DataConnect plans that provide buckets of tiered data and automatically assess overages for exceeding the bucket allowance.

The current options are:

  • 50GB for $55
  • 100GB for $90

Prices above include a $10 discount for autopay and paperless billing.

Customers who go over the data allotment will automatically get increments of 5GB of additional data for $10 per increment.

These options come with 5G and 5G+ (AT&T's mmWave network) for compatible devices.

AT&T PDF with full details

Business Data Advantage Plans

The Business Data Advantage Plans offer plans with a high-speed data cap, and then unlimited data at 512 Kbps after that.

The current plan options are:

  • 10GB for $50
  • 20GB for $90
  • 45GB for $150

These plans come with 5G and 5G+ (AT&T's mmWave network) for compatible devices.

Business Connect Plans

AT&T's Business Connect plans come in three flavors: Telemetry, Capped, and Backup .

The "backup" option is the only remotely viable option, but it is intended to use shared buckets of "pooled" with multiple devices.  Data costs range from 250MB for $20 to 200GB for $950 (not a typo).

Once data caps are reached, additional data will be automatically added.

These plans can access AT&T's 5G networks with a compatible device.

Business Mobile Select Pooled Plans

The business Mobile Select Pooled plan combines a variety of types of devices into a single pooled plan, but the data caps out at 10GB per device. Overages on one device can be offset by using less data on another device. 5G access is available with compatible devices.

Business Plan Requirements

AT&T Business offerings are generally available to any business customer, but some plans may only be available to certain types of business accounts and may be restricted based on credit history.

AT&T Business Logo

Setting up a business account can be done at an AT&T store or by calling business sales at 855-707-1019.  Generally, the best method is to call business sales and talk to a rep directly as store reps are often not knowledgeable about business options. You cannot sign up for a business account on the AT&T website.

Here is the information required to set up a business account:

  • A Business tax ID or SSN as a sole proprietor
  • A driver's license number
  • The plan you want to sign up for
  • The IMEI of the device you want the plan for if you are getting a BYOD option
  • Contact & billing information

AT&T will run a credit check on the business or your personal SSN. Credit history requirements are not published, but if the credit check doesn't meet AT&T's requirements, AT&T may require a per-line refundable deposit of $1,000 to activate business service.

Once you get a business account, signing up for additional lines/plans is generally done through your business sales representative, but a few plans are available at some AT&T stores.

What Is AT&T?

At&t cell phone plans overview, what cell phone plans are available from at&t.

AT&T Inc. is one of the oldest names in telecommunications and has one of the industry’s more complex family trees. The current company dates to SBC, one of the regional operating companies spun out of the conglomerate once known as American Telephone and Telegraph when a court ordered the Bell System’s breakup in 1984. Based in Dallas, today’s AT&T provides nationwide wireless 4G and 5G service as well as residential wired broadband service in its regional markets. Over the last five years, AT&T also bought WarnerMedia and DirecTV.

AT&T’s current wireless offerings didn’t place in our Best Cell Phone Plans of 2024 list, but one of those plans may provide a better fit for your own needs, and the following overview may help.

AT&T Cell Phone Plan Details

AT&T lets subscribers choose between limited and unlimited data , with its $50 4 gigabytes (GB) plan and its $65-and-up unlimited plans for people who know they will exceed that threshold. AT&T sells three different tiers of unlimited plans, from the $65 Starter Unlimited to the $85 Unlimited Elite. Paying more gets you such upgrades as more mobile hotspot data to share with nearby devices via Wi-Fi and higher-resolution video streaming.

All of these service plans benefit from AT&T’s extensive 4G network, whereas AT&T reserves 5G for unlimited data subscribers. AT&T has not yet matched T-Mobile in 5G coverage, although it is slightly ahead of Verizon.

In addition to its postpaid subscription offerings, AT&T sells prepaid service – meaning you pay in advance for service instead of getting a bill at the end of the month – under the AT&T Prepaid and Cricket Wireless brands. Customers comfortable with buying their own devices and not in need of such extra features as international roaming should do the math on these before signing up for an AT&T postpaid plan.

For shoppers looking for a traditional postpaid subscription, AT&T’s menu features one limited data plan and three unlimited data plans – which each include their own restrictions on your data use. Its 4 GB plan, $50 on a single line, could be a fit for the many people who don’t use more than 2 or 3 GB of data a month. While it doesn’t cover 5G access, the 4 GB plan lets you use as much of that data as you want on mobile hotspots.

AT&T’s most affordable unlimited plan, the $65 Starter Unlimited, omits mobile hotspot and includes zero priority data, meaning your connection can get slowed to compensate for an overloaded network even if you haven’t used any data in the current billing period. The two more expensive unlimited plans, the $75 Unlimited Extra and the $85 Unlimited Elite, come with 50 GB and unlimited priority data as well as 15 and 40 GB of mobile-hotspot use, respectively.

AT&T’s prepaid plans offer a wider range of options, starting with a 5 GB $30 plan. An 8 GB plan will cost $25 a month if you prepay the $300 annual total upfront. Lastly, a 15 GB plan for $40 per month rounds out the limited-plan selection. Then AT&T Prepaid offers two unlimited plans that each cost $50 per month with auto-pay enabled. One offers no priority data or mobile-hotspot use, while the other provides 22 GB of priority data and 10 GB of mobile hotspot usage. That second option is also the only prepaid plan at AT&T to include 5G.

To see more prepaid options, visit our guide to the Best Prepaid Cell Phone Plans of 2024 .

How Much Do AT&T Unlimited Cell Phone Plans Cost?

On a single line, AT&T’s cheapest postpaid unlimited data plan is Starter Unlimited. The plan costs $65 a month with auto-pay enabled. Starter offers no priority data, so if AT&T’s network gets congested, you may find your connection slows down even if you’ve barely used any data in the current period. This plan doesn’t include mobile hotspot use and caps video streaming at 480p resolution.

The Unlimited Extra plan, which costs $75 per month on a single line, includes 50 GB of priority data, 15 GB of mobile hotspot use, and video streaming at 480p resolution. Finally, Unlimited Elite, which costs $85 for one line, covers unlimited priority data, 40 GB of mobile hotspot data, and lets you stream video at up to 4K UHD.

If you’re a member of the armed forces, a veteran, first responder, teacher, doctor, or nurse, you can get four lines of Unlimited Starter for $32 off the usual four-line rate of $140. AARP members, students, union members, and employees of businesses that qualify for AT&T’s Signature Discount receive $10 off Unlimited Elite.

On the prepaid side, AT&T’s Prepaid Unlimited roughly matches Starter Unlimited. It doesn’t include priority data or a mobile hotspot, but at $50, it’s a good deal cheaper each month. Unlimited Plus includes 22 GB of priority data, 10 GB of mobile hotspot, and HD streaming video for $60 per month, for one line.

Visit our guide to the Best Unlimited Cell Phone Plans of 2024 to see more options.

How To Upgrade Your Cell Phone Plan

Since none of AT&T’s current plans come with two-year contracts, you can change plans at any time on its site, in its mobile app, over the phone, or in its stores. If, however, you bought a smartphone from AT&T on a discount associated with a particular plan and you then change to something cheaper, you may be charged for the remainder of that discount.

How Much Do AT&T Prepaid Cell Phone Plans Cost?

AT&T offers a lineup of prepaid plans that can offer substantial savings over its postpaid plans. The cheapest plan on a month-by-month basis provides 5 GB for $30 per month. An 8 GB plan costs $25 per month but requires paying $300 for a full year of service in advance, whereas its 15 GB plan costs $40 per month. All three plans include mobile hotspot use up to the data allocation on each, but none include 5G. Among them, only the 8 GB plan allows HD video streaming, with the other two limiting you to 480p resolution.

AT&T Prepaid also offers two unlimited plans, both of which cost $50 per month after auto-pay discounts and activation of a new line. Its Unlimited Plus plan costs $60 per month without a new line activation and includes 22 GB of data, 10 GB of mobile hotspot data, HD streaming video, and 5G access. The Unlimited plan is $50 per month without a new line activation, doesn’t include priority data, a mobile hotspot, 5G, or HD streaming.

The 15 GB prepaid plan and its two unlimited prepaid offerings qualify for the Federal Communications Commission’s Emergency Broadband Benefit , a $50 monthly coupon available to lower-income households.

AT&T Setup Fees

AT&T charges a $30 activation fee on new lines but will waive it for customers who bring their own phone and port over their existing number.

Where Is AT&T 5G Available?

AT&T offers 5G in two bands of spectrum. Its most common 5G, which it markets as just “5G,” rides on the same low-band frequencies as its 4G service. The 5G service that AT&T delivers on a higher band and markets as “5G+”, can offer some of the industry’s fastest connections. It’s offered in more than 40 urban areas. Visit the AT&T website to see a coverage map of availability.

AT&T Optional Features

AT&T offers some additional features and options. Some features are included in plan pricing and some are at an additional cost.

Video Streaming

Most of AT&T’s unlimited data plans limit streaming video to 480p resolution, but Unlimited Elite allows streaming at up to 4K UHD – which is well above the resolution of most smartphones. Elite includes a free HBO Max subscription.

International services

AT&T’s postpaid plans include unlimited calling and texting to and from Mexico and Canada. The unlimited offerings add unlimited data, while the 4 GB deal allows 4 GB of roaming data in both countries. Elsewhere, AT&T sells International Day Passes for $10 per day ($5 for additional lines on your plan) in 210-plus countries, a slightly more comprehensive list than Verizon’s TravelPass. Remember that if you own an unlocked phone (meaning you bought it elsewhere or bought it from AT&T and have since paid it in full), you can save money by buying a prepaid SIM at your destination.

For cruise-ship travelers, AT&T sells separate add-ons: 50 minutes of talk time and unlimited texting for $50 a month, or unlimited talking, texting, and 200MB of data for $100 monthly.

In-Car wireless

If you own a car with built-in cellular reception compatible with AT&T, the company offers unlimited data $20 monthly that supports up to 10 Wi-Fi devices at a time. AT&T also sells an add-on pod for $100. To check your car’s compatibility, plug in your car’s Vehicle Identification Number at AT&T’s site.

Data-only plans

AT&T offers two subscription, data-only plans with 5G included for non-phone devices, such as laptops, tablets, and mobile hotspots. You get 25 GB of data for $50 per month or 40 GB of data for $75 per month, with both rates reflecting a $10 auto-pay discount. But AT&T’s prepaid pricing offers a wider and cheaper range of deals for tablets and mobile hotspots. It offers 15 GB of data for $35 per month, 20 GB of data for $25 a month (if you prepay the yearly total of $300), and 100 GB of data for $55 per month. A separate set of DataConnect passes, with rates varying by device and duration, offer lower rates for less data – for example, you can get 25 GB of data for a tablet or camera for 30 days for $40 a month.

AT&T FAQ

You can sign up for AT&T cell phone service by signing up for a subscription plan or paying upfront for prepaid service on its site, over the phone, or in one of its retail stores or that of a retail partner. However you buy service, you have the same choice at any other carrier: porting over an existing phone number or having the carrier assign you a new one.

AT&T does not offer a trial period, but if you cancel service within three days of activating it, you will get back the $30 activation fee.

No, AT&T does not offer a money-back guarantee on its wireless service aside from the three-day timetable to cancel and get the activation fee back. However, it does offer full refunds on hardware it sells if returned within 14 days of shipment or purchase. You can return an eligible device to any corporate-owned AT&T retail store in person or get a shipping label online. If you purchased the device from another retailer, call AT&T’s customer care at 800-331-0500.

Please note that a restocking fee of up to $55 may apply – although that doesn’t apply to device orders placed online and canceled within 14 days – and any refunds will be delivered through the same method by which the purchase was made.

To cancel your phone service, call the number on your receipt or invoice:

  • If you’re canceling within three days of activation, AT&T will refund the activation fee.
  • If you’re making installment-plan payments for a device, you’ll owe the remaining balance at the time of cancellation.
  • If you got those installment-plan payments lowered on a trade-in deal, you’ll also have to pay the full remaining balance without those offsetting discounts.

If you live in New York and you initiated your service online, you may be able to cancel your wireless service by visiting att.com/myatt. If you don’t already have a myAT&T account, you’ll have to set up one before submitting your request to cancel service.

In late March 2024, AT&T says it found compromised data from 2019 or earlier on the dark web for 7.6 million of its current users and 65.4 million former users, as reported by The Associated Press . The data may include Social Security numbers, full names, email and mailing addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, and AT&T account numbers. The origin of the information – whether it's from AT&T or a vendor – is unknown. AT&T has reset current users' passcodes and is reaching out to those whose data was compromised. If you're an AT&T customer, check your email or mailbox for a potential message to see if you were affected.

ATT Flexible Pooled Plans for businesses

Mobile Select: Flexible Pooled Plans

Maybe unlimited data is unnecessary. Maybe you need to curtail data usage by employees based on projects and location. If this situation sounds familiar, then consider an AT&T Mobile Select pooled data plan. With these plans, you still get unlimited talk and text along with a pool of shared data that you can assign to members of your plan.

How does that work? Let's say you sign up for 9 Gb of mobile data, with three of your employees signed up to your plan. With the Mobile Select plan, you can assign data limits to each employee within the 9 GB – so each of them can have a monthly limit of 3 Gb, or two can have 1.5 GB while the third has 6 GB. You have the complete freedom to assign your mobile data as you see fit.

Pooled plans also come with the same unlimited talk and text, plus AT&T Stream Saver. Stream Saver limits video quality to 480p (roughly DVD quality) while a phone is on the mobile network, so that streaming video doesn't use all of that monthly data. Once that phone is on a Wi-Fi network or attached to an AT&T hotspot, it will switch over to allow HD video.

AT&T Mobile Shared Plans for Business

Finally, if you just want a group data plan for your employees that covers all data usage from a shared account, then sign up for AT&T Share Data or Share Plus for Business. These two plans simplify your Business Wireless by allowing you to pay for aggregate data usage covering your team from a set limit, with options to extend your limit when needed.

Calling Features and Perks from AT&T Business Wireless

Depending on your plan, you also get access to several perks and features exclusive to the AT&T Wireless network. These include:

  • Wi-Fi Calling. Use local Wi-Fi when making and receiving calls. If you are in a location with Wi-Fi but have poor cellular coverage, you can count staying connected with your wireless device.
  • NumberSync . An app for iOS and Android devices that allows you to use your AT&T Mobile number with smart devices like tablets and wearable without needing access to your phone.
  • AT&T International Day Pass for Business. Qualifying customers can pay $10 per day to use talk, text, and data in over 100 countries without incurring heavy international rates.

AT&T Wireless is committed to helping business customers develop their local and global brands. With our coverage in over 200 countries and 7 continents, you can count on AT&T Wireless to make sure you and your staff are consistently available, within the reach of a cell phone call or email.

The best AT&T phone plans offer a mix of prices — some plans come cheaply, others not so much — so finding wireless coverage that fits in with your budget may seem daunting. Still, it's worth seeing if there's an AT&T plan that appeals to you, as the carrier offers extensive coverage and a growing 5G presence.

Even better, AT&T routinely offers great deals on phones, whether you're an existing customer or planning on switching service, and we've got a range of AT&T Mobility promo codes to make those prices even better. So you've got plenty of incentive to find an appealing phone plan with the carrier.

It helps to look beyond AT&T's marquee offerings if you want to find some of the best cell phone plans on offer at the carrier. For instance, AT&T provides one of the best unlimited data plans we've found in our research into the best phone carriers, though it's only available to single-line customers. There's also a very good unlimited option through AT&T's prepaid service that comes with a low monthly rate — if you're willing to pay for a year of service up front.

We've looked at every option available through AT&T — both postpaid and prepaid — to find the best AT&T phone plans for both individuals and families. Whether it's unlimited data or a lower-cost plan, we can point you in the right direction.

AT&T's best plan

AT&T's best rate on unlimited data is a $50.99 monthly plan with few perks that's only available as a single-line option. But it does let you access AT&T's extensive network for less.

Read more below

Pay for a full year of service upfront with AT&T's prepaid plan, and you can get unlimited data at a low monthly rate, with a generous 16GB cap before your speeds are slowed down.

Families will get the best mix of price and data with Unlimited Extra EL, though you can mix and match any of AT&T's unlimited offerings for each line of data on your plan. Get per-line discounts as you add more lines.

Best plan for travel

If you spend a lot of time in Latin America, get Unlimited Premium PL. For $85.99/month, you can access talk, text and data in 20 countries at no extra charge. There's no cap on data, so AT&T never slows your speeds on this plan

Best tiered data plan

AT&T focuses on unlimited data plans, but if you don't need all that data at your disposal, you can pay less each month. This $40 plan gives you a still generous 15GB chunk of data, with unused data rolling over to the next month.

If you're 55 years or older, you can get two lines of unlimited data at a discounted rate through AT&T. You will need to live in Florida to take advantage of this offer, however.

There are some caveats to Value Plus, however. First, you can only have one line of data on the plan, so families will have to look elsewhere. Perks are also minimal — you get 5G coverage and unlimited talk, text and data between the U.S., Canada and Mexico plus free texting to 200-plus countries, but that's it. And AT&T can slow your speeds whenever its network gets congested. But if those are acceptable terms, you won't find a cheaper way to enjoy all the data you can consume. You've got coverage in Mexico and Canada as well as the u.S. and you can text from the U.S. to 200-plus countries. Sadly, only Florida residents are eligible for AT&T's senior discount. Pros: Low rate for two lines of unlimited data; 5G access included Cons: Restricted to Florida residents

Other AT&T plans

Unlike the extensive options among T-Mobile phone plans and Verizon phone plans , our top picks for AT&T cover most of the different plans at that carrier. However, there are a few remaining plans you should know about as well.

The Unlimited Extra and Unlimited Premium options make up two-thirds of AT&T's three main plans. The third option is the cheapest of the trio — Unlimited Starter costs $65.99 for just one line.  It offers just 5GB of hotspot data and AT&T can slow your data at any time. Unless you need hotspot data or want the ability to add extra lines, Value Plus will cost you even less.

AT&T's prepaid plans include three tiered data options, plus a pair of unlimited offerings. With tiered data, you can get 5GB for $30 a month if the 15GB plan is too pricey. Pay for three months of service at once, and you can get an 8GB plan at $33/month. (That's $99 up front.)

As for the unlimited prepaid plans, a $40 monthly caps your speeds at 3 Mbps for the first 30GB of data; after that, your speeds are cut in half for the rest of the billing cycle. Instead, we'd steer you toward the $50 prepaid unlimited plan which includes 5GB of hotspot data and only slows your speeds when there's heavy traffic. Note that those two plans reflect autopay discounts off their normal rate.

Low-cost AT&T alternatives

If you like AT&T's network, but don't care for AT&T's prices, there's more than one way to enjoy the carrier's extensive coverage. Mobile virtual network operators, or MVNOs, use AT&T's towers to provide their own service, usually at a lower rate than what AT&T charges. The trade-off is that AT&T gives priority to its own traffic so you may see slower data speeds.

The best-known AT&T MVNO is Cricket Wireless, which AT&T owns and operates. Cricket has a $40 monthly data plan that delivers 10GB of data. That's less than AT&T's best tiered data plan, but Cricket does offer an autopay discount to lower its cost to $35. An unlimited data plan at Cricket costs $65/month for one line but includes perks like the ad-supported tier of the Max streaming service — something you don't even get at AT&T.

Other AT&T MVNOs include the senior-friendly Consumer Cellular, Boost and Red Pocket Mobile.

best at&t plans

In our guide to the best phone carriers , AT&T ranks behind Verizon and T-Mobile among the major carriers, as T-Mobile offers better perks and Verizon offers an extensive network. That said, AT&T has a strong reputation for its own coverage, as Rootmetrics split its award for best overall network between AT&T and Verizon for performance during the second half of 2023. The same reort says AT&T has the speediest performance overall.

However, AT&T is in a bit of a weird spot. It's not quite as large a network as Verizon and lacks its intensive coverage and it isn't as affordable as our top ranked carrier - T-Mobile. While some of AT&T's plans can be quite expensive, it offers ways around this, most noticeably through family plan discounts and savings for nurses, teachers, first responders, military and more; you can also save with some schools, organizations and employers.

How-To Geek

At&t is raising prices on unlimited plans.

It's not all bad news, though.

Mobile carriers are always changing the pricing and features for its plans, in a never-ending quest to find the perfect balance between competition and making more money. AT&T is now increasing prices on its unlimited plans, but adding more tethering data as a consolation prize.

AT&T confirmed to CNET that the company is raising prices on unlimited plans by 99 cents per line, per month. The change will take effect on March 5, and most customers have already been notified. The changes are already live on AT&T's website, along with the updated names for each plan.

Unlimited Starter, the least expensive unlimited plan from AT&T, is now "Unlimited Starter SL" and has bumped up the 3GB hotspot data to 5GB. The price for that has increased from $65/month for one line to $65.99 for one line. The Unlimited Extra plan is now "Unlimited Extra EL" and doubles the available hotspot data from 15GB to 30GB, with pricing starting at $75.99/month for one line. Finally, AT&T Unlimited Premium is now "Unlimited Premium PL" and now has 60GB of hotspot data instead of 50GB All three plans have lower per-line prices as you add more lines—for example, four lines on AT&T Unlimited Starter SL is $35.99 per line per month.

Subscribers on AT&T's old Unlimited Elite plan won't have any pricing changes, but that could happen in the future. AT&T raised prices on older Unlimited and Mobile share plans back in 2022 , which included rises of up to $6 per month for single-line customers and $12 per month for family plans.

It's great that subscribers get more hotspot data, but it doesn't change the fact that AT&T's phone plans are incredibly expensive at this point, especially for single-line plans. If you don't need add-ons like smartwatch plans, the Unlimited plan at AT&T's pre-paid Cricket Wireless subsidiary starts at $55 per month without included hotspot data, or $60 per month with 15GB hotspot data and Max (formerly HBO Max) with ads included. Cricket also has plans with multi-month discounts , but those aren't available for multi-line subscribers and don't include tethering or Max. T-Mobile and other prepaid mobile carriers might have better offers, depending on what you need.
