Cover Letter Guide

Easy-to-follow cover letter writing tips for quality engineer.

Quality Engineer cover letter

Would a good cover letter increase your chances of landing an interview? Yes.

Do we have any specific tips for Quality Engineer applications? Yes.

Are cover letters the same as resumes, but longer? Definitely not!

So what are cover letters?

Well, great cover letters give you the opportunity to tell a personal story, while making the right impression and proving you’re the best candidate at the same time.

Need more details? Let’s dive deep.

quality engineer coverletter.png

Let’s begin by discussing the difference between a cover letter and a resume. The resume is the place where you should list all your hard skills, achievements, and talents.

The cover letter, on the other hand, is your chance to share more about yourself and show who you are.

But what’s the way to grab the reader’s attention? How can you make the hiring manager want to meet you and learn more about you?

Choose the right salutation and craft an introduction that gets you remembered

It’s always better to address your cover letter to a specific person. This shows that you’ve taken the time to research who the hiring manager might be and that you’re attentive to detail.

However, in case you don’t know the recruiter’s name, you can go for traditional gender-neutral salutations.

Here are some of our suggestions:

  • To the Human Resources Department,
  • Dear [company name] Recruiter,
  • Dear Angela Stone,
  • To the Recruitment Team

The introduction of your cover letter is the first thing the hiring manager will read. Logically, having a strong introduction is your chance of getting their attention.

In order to do that, you need to get creative. Don’t just do what everyone else’s been doing for years, i.e. writing “I found this job opening on that website and decided to apply”.

Rather, show that you are genuinely excited about the position and the company. You could do that by mentioning your love for the industry or what you can bring to the table.

Talk about your hard and soft skills

So what skills do you need to include? Well, unfortunately, there’s no one answer to this. It all depends on the job description and the skills you’ve currently got.

According to experts, what recruiters look for in cover letters is how you can link your soft skills to particular achievements and goals. So, try to figure out what has helped you on the way to success.

However, don’t forget about hard skills. Even if they’re not the focus of your happy story, you need to include at least the ones that were mentioned as part of the requirements section of the job posting. This will help you pass applicant tracking systems (ATS) that screen applicant documents for certain keywords and phrases.

show that you know the company and its problems well

Proving that you are familiar with the company, its problems, and its goals is without a doubt one of the best ways to stand out.

If you want to show your passion for the company, mention how your skills and previous achievements can help the team grow.

It’s also worth mentioning how your experience can help resolve some of the most common industry issues.

End with a call to action

The last part of your cover letter should briefly sum up everything you’ve said so far. It should also express your gratitude for the hiring manager’s time and consideration.

The tone of the closing line depends on two things – your personal preference and the company culture. Don’t go for overly creative phrases if the company you’re applying for relies on strictly corporate language.

Traditional lines such as “Looking forward to your reply” are usually considered a safe bet. So when in doubt, stick to them.

[email protected]

Dear Tallulah Iles,

I am writing to express my interest in the Quality Assurance Engineer position at Google, as advertised. With a solid foundation of five years of experience at Microsoft, I have honed my skills in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and team collaboration, all of which I believe align perfectly with the high standards and innovative culture at Google.

During my tenure at Microsoft, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects that allowed me to develop a deep understanding of software development life cycles, automation frameworks, and continuous integration processes. My role required a keen eye for detail and a commitment to ensuring that all products met the highest quality standards before reaching our users. I am proud to say that my contributions significantly reduced the number of post-release bugs and improved user satisfaction.

One of my key achievements at Microsoft was leading a cross-functional team to develop a comprehensive test automation suite for a major product release. QA Engineer Cover Letter Example (Full Text Version)

Mr. ken thompson.

No beating around the bush here. I would love to come test the heck out of all things Android, well just all things, for Razer! I can't think of a better place to work than a company that has taken a passion for gaming and combined it with an attention to detail and a refined style that you can't help but pine for. I love hardware, more than most things, and I believe that all the work I've done up to now has been to get me ready for Razer. But you know, I didn't see the light until now.

My love affair with hardware began straight out of college and hasn't stopped or slowed since then. I began my first professional days as a support dude for Quirky and Wink. This is where I first laid my hands on the command line, scratched my head until mobile device proxies made sense, and began looking to the cloud for my source of truth in the user space.

I carried this new found love for testing and breaking hardware into my time at Lily where I, with my teammate, created a Beta program and preliminary product QA for a flying camera. A dangerous but exciting project. This was a pretty small team which meant it was a true learn or die scenario... and I loved it! Having to build a beta within CenterCode with no real background on the platform meant a lot of late nights, tons of tutorials, and one finely tuned beta at the end of it all.

Next was the world of mesh networking, and my valiant return to QA. My time at Plume was a dip back into the support world and one that didn't quite suite me. I knew then support just wasn't technical enough to keep me challenged, it was QA or bust. Joining eero gave me the ultimate opportunity to prove that I had the chops to test and verify with the best of them. Coming in with the bare minimum networking knowledge meant it was back to the books. If nothing else, succeeding at eero proved to me that there isn't a topic, language, program or a platform that I can't learn. I was able to come up to speed in a month's time and was busy owning regression for a dedicated node config two weeks later.

Being a fan of tech in general I find myself enjoying most of the products I've worked with over the years, but Razer is something entirely different. This is a company I have followed and championed for years, and one I would be honored to sign my name to in any facet. If I'm coming off strong it's because I'm coming from a place of love. I'm deeply committed to my work and the companies that give me the chance to prove it. I always give everything I've got to what I do and I truly want to bring that dedication and passion to your team.

Common Mistakes To Avoid When Writing a QA Engineer Cover Letter

Now that you know what to include let’s cover some common mistakes you should avoid:

Firstly, being too generic is a major mistake that many candidates make. It is important to avoid copying and pasting your cover letter or using a template. Instead, tailor your cover letter to the specific company and role you’re applying for. This shows that you have taken the time to research the company and understand their needs.

Another mistake to avoid is not showcasing your experience. Make sure you highlight your past experience that is relevant to the role you’re applying for. This will help the employer understand how your skills and experience align with the position they are looking to fill.

Over or under-explaining is another mistake to avoid. It is important to strike a balance between providing too much or too little information. Keep the focus on your main achievements and skills and keep it concise. This will help the employer quickly understand your qualifications and suitability for the role.

Ignoring the job requirements is another common mistake. Make sure you read and understand the job requirements and tailor your cover letter to the needs of the position. This will help you stand out as a candidate who is genuinely interested in the role and has taken the time to understand what is required.

Lastly, forgetting to proofread is a major mistake that can detract from your credibility. Spelling and grammatical errors can make you appear careless and unprofessional. Take the time to proofread your cover letter carefully, and consider having someone else review it as well.

  • Remember, your cover letter is your chance to make a great first impression, so take the time to craft a tailored and well-written document that showcases your skills and experience.

Final Steps On Writing Your QA Engineer Cover Letter

To wrap up, here are some additional tips:

  • Research the company: Gain a deeper understanding of the company’s culture, values, and mission to tailor your application and make it more personalized.
  • Use professional language: Your cover letter should be professional, avoid using slang or overly casual language.
  • Keep it concise: Your cover letter should not be longer than one page.

Expanding on the first tip, researching the company can be a crucial step in crafting a successful cover letter. By understanding the company’s culture, values, and mission, you can tailor your application to fit the company’s needs and show that you are a great fit for the team. For example, if the company values teamwork and collaboration, you can highlight your experience working in a team environment and your ability to communicate effectively with others.

Using professional language is also important when writing your cover letter. Avoid using slang or overly casual language, as this can make you come across as unprofessional. Instead, use clear and concise language that showcases your skills and qualifications in a professional manner.

Finally, it’s important to keep your cover letter concise. While you want to provide enough detail to showcase your skills and qualifications, you don’t want to overwhelm the hiring manager with too much information. Keep your cover letter to one page or less, and focus on highlighting the most important aspects of your experience and qualifications.

By following these tips, you can craft a strong and effective cover letter that showcases your skills and qualifications and helps you stand out from other applicants. Good luck!

What's The Best Structure For QA Automation Engineer Cover Letters?

After creating an impressive QA Automation Engineer resume , the next step is crafting a compelling cover letter to accompany your job applications. It's essential to remember that your cover letter should maintain a formal tone and follow a recommended structure. But what exactly does this structure entail, and what key elements should be included in a QA Automation Engineer cover letter? Let's explore the guidelines and components that will make your cover letter stand out.

Key Components For QA Automation Engineer Cover Letters:

  • Your contact information, including the date of writing
  • The recipient's details, such as the company's name and the name of the addressee
  • A professional greeting or salutation, like "Dear Mr. Levi,"
  • An attention-grabbing opening statement to captivate the reader's interest
  • A concise paragraph explaining why you are an excellent fit for the role
  • Another paragraph highlighting why the position aligns with your career goals and aspirations
  • A closing statement that reinforces your enthusiasm and suitability for the role
  • A complimentary closing, such as "Regards" or "Sincerely," followed by your name
  • An optional postscript (P.S.) to add a brief, impactful note or mention any additional relevant information.

Cover Letter Header

A header in a cover letter should typically include the following information:

  • Your Full Name: Begin with your first and last name, written in a clear and legible format.
  • Contact Information: Include your phone number, email address, and optionally, your mailing address. Providing multiple methods of contact ensures that the hiring manager can reach you easily.
  • Date: Add the date on which you are writing the cover letter. This helps establish the timeline of your application.

It's important to place the header at the top of the cover letter, aligning it to the left or center of the page. This ensures that the reader can quickly identify your contact details and know when the cover letter was written.

Cover Letter Greeting / Salutation

A greeting in a cover letter should contain the following elements:

  • Personalized Salutation: Address the hiring manager or the specific recipient of the cover letter by their name. If the name is not mentioned in the job posting or you are unsure about the recipient's name, it's acceptable to use a general salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team."
  • Professional Tone: Maintain a formal and respectful tone throughout the greeting. Avoid using overly casual language or informal expressions.
  • Correct Spelling and Title: Double-check the spelling of the recipient's name and ensure that you use the appropriate title (e.g., Mr., Ms., Dr., or Professor) if applicable. This shows attention to detail and professionalism.

For example, a suitable greeting could be "Dear Ms. Johnson," or "Dear Hiring Manager," depending on the information available. It's important to tailor the greeting to the specific recipient to create a personalized and professional tone for your cover letter.

Cover Letter Introduction

An introduction for a cover letter should capture the reader's attention and provide a brief overview of your background and interest in the position. Here's how an effective introduction should look:

  • Opening Statement: Start with a strong opening sentence that immediately grabs the reader's attention. Consider mentioning your enthusiasm for the job opportunity or any specific aspect of the company or organization that sparked your interest.
  • Brief Introduction: Provide a concise introduction of yourself and mention the specific position you are applying for. Include any relevant background information, such as your current role, educational background, or notable achievements that are directly related to the position.
  • Connection to the Company: Demonstrate your knowledge of the company or organization and establish a connection between your skills and experiences with their mission, values, or industry. Showcasing your understanding and alignment with their goals helps to emphasize your fit for the role.
  • Engaging Hook: Consider including a compelling sentence or two that highlights your unique selling points or key qualifications that make you stand out from other candidates. This can be a specific accomplishment, a relevant skill, or an experience that demonstrates your value as a potential employee.
  • Transition to the Body: Conclude the introduction by smoothly transitioning to the main body of the cover letter, where you will provide more detailed information about your qualifications, experiences, and how they align with the requirements of the position.

By following these guidelines, your cover letter introduction will make a strong first impression and set the stage for the rest of your application.
