Essay On Sister

A sister is someone who has an unwavering affection from their sibling. While some people have older sisters, others have younger sisters. We are all fortunate to have sisters in our lives, though. Sister is the one who makes childhood remember brighter and more enjoyable. Sisters are the best friends that God has chosen for us. She is the one who truly makes you feel at ease when everyone else might be causing you hurt. A sister's love knows no bounds. Having a sister can be a truly enriching experience. You can learn so much from each other, and grow together as people.

For siblings, the word sister is not only just a word but also an emotion, a sense of feeling that enlightens their heart when they spell or remind them of it. Elder sisters are like mother figures to their younger sisters or brothers. They protect and care for their younger sibling like a mother would do for a child. Elder sisters teach and guide their younger siblings in the best possible way, and show them the correct path in life no matter how difficult it is. It is possible that they are not physically present at that moment but her guidance will be long-lasting. Usually, elder sisters are self-competent because they are habituated to doing things on their own.

Your sister can teach you new things, and help you to see the world in a different way. She can inspire you, challenge you, and encourage you to be the best person you can be. A sister can be your biggest cheerleader, always there to support you and celebrate your achievements. Having a sister also means having someone who you can always count on. She is someone who will always be there for you, no matter what. Whether you need a shoulder to cry on, someone to laugh with, or just someone to talk to, your sister will always be there. This kind of unconditional love and support is a rare and precious thing, and is something that should be cherished and appreciated.

As a sister, she’s there in times of need and in times of celebration. Even from afar, simple acts can demonstrate your desire to be a better sister. A sister always makes sure that her sibling speaks the truth, no matter how harsh it is. Sister is the only family member who can put her sibling in the right direction in terms of personal matters.

Sisters Never Compete

A good sister never competes with her siblings. There are siblings who frequently sacrifice their own dreams in order for the other to succeed. Sister makes sure that she doesn't see her sibling as a rival but instead helps them to grow academically and career-wise.

Sisters are Supportive

A sister always supports her brother and sister. The sister should be the biggest supporter of her siblings’ dreams and aspirations. The sister is the biggest cheerleader and should support her siblings through thick and thin. There are times when a sister’s support matters more than their parent’s.

Sisters are Active Listeners

A good sister always listens to her siblings. Just like a best friend, a sister will always listen to siblings about their heartbreaks, stories, and crushes. We all need someone to listen to our rants about our day. A person never wants to be judged by someone who he or she loves.

Sisters are Caring

A sister always cares for her siblings. Sisters are known for their innocent and caring hearts. Elder sisters always make sure that they are there when an elder sister or brother falls sick. They care for them in times of need and let them know that even if the world does not care, they do.

“Sister” in mother tongue

India is a country with diverse cultures and different languages residing in one place but they are connected by the heart. Different people spell the word sister in their mother tongue but the emotions are all the same. Here are the different languages in which the Sister word is pronounced:

i) Hindi: Bhen or Bhena

ii) Urdu: Api or Apa

iii) Punjabi: Bebe

iv) Kannada: Akka

Raksha Bandhan

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is observed as a symbol of duty between brothers and sisters. The occasion is meant to celebrate any type of brother-sister relationship between men and women who may not be biologically related. During a Raksha Bandhan ceremony, a sister is responsible for tying a talisman or amulet bracelet, called a “rakhi,” onto her brother's right wrist; this rakhi is believed to symbolically provide protection from challenges in the year ahead.

A sister is an incredibly important person in your life. She can provide love, support, and companionship, and can help you to grow and develop as a person. A sister is someone who you can always count on, and who will always be there for you, no matter what. Cherish your sister, and always remember the special bond that you share.

Personal Narrative Essay: My Sister

The biggest influence in my life up to this moment has been my sister, Ilana. Throughout my entire life, from my birth onward she has continued being a blend of irritation, support, and compassion. Through my obstinance and hardheadedness, my sister has assisted me learn to live boldly and handle issues with stride. My sister has helped me with finding motivation, helped me with school, and has also been with me as I've grown as a person. Although my sister can be as frustrating as the rest, for the most part she is filled with determination, fortitude, and an amazing work ethic which is why I admire her as much as I do.

Just last year, as a more careless freshman prioritizing my social life over school, my sister was putting everything she had into graduating. Despite the looming stress and pressure of graduation, my sister would take time out of her studies to help me with my homework or explain a concept that I didn't understand. When I would make bad choices my sister would remind me to focus on long term achievements such as college. Despite many challenges, one of the greatest including COVID-19, she left home at 19 to go to university. This was one of the bravest things I've ever seen my sister do, taking a plunge into the unknown. Seeing my sister’s journey not only showed me how difficult life can be, but it also inspired me to become a better version of myself.

In addition to helping me gain success with education, my sister introduced me to some of my favorite games, books, movies, and TV shows. As long as I’ve known my sister she has introduced me to new experiences and shown me things that I would not have discovered otherwise. One of these things include my appreciation for music. My sister introduced to me many bands and artists that influenced me as a child. My entire childhood was led by songs introduced to me by my sister, many of which I still listen to on a regular basis when in need for motivation.

Although my sister is now in university, following her dreams with her career path, she still calls me very often to check up on me and make sure I'm staying productive. When I need help, we get into a call and she makes sure I understand confusing topics. I am lucky to have a sister who cares for me and helps me work through my struggles. These are just some of the reasons my sister is the main influence in my life, and although she is across the ocean, I hope to remain in contact with her forever.

For a child of her age, she is quite talented. Aastha has many hobbies, and reading is one of them. She reads storybooks and recites poems. We also spend a lot of time drawing and painting. Besides that, she is interested in music. Last year, she started taking music lessons, and now she has won many competitions at our school.

My sister died when she was 23. I kept all her letters so my kids could have a connection with their aunt.

  • My sister died in a car accident when she was 23.
  • I kept a robe of hers, her cologne, and all the letters she had sent me.
  • I gave my five kids their aunt's letters so they can have a connection with her.

Insider Today

By the time my oldest child was born , my sister had been dead for several years. A car accident had claimed Maureen's life at age 23. My two sisters and I were incredibly close, and the loss of one of our trio shattered Carolyn and me. It seemed impossible that this beautiful, funny, vivacious young woman was gone forever.

In those days, I was not much of a saver. When it came to my sister's belongings, all I had was her navy bathrobe and a bottle of her favorite cologne. I kept the robe for years, carrying it from apartment to apartment as I moved. I would spray the cologne sparingly, the fragrance bringing her memory back into sharp focus.

Related stories

I also saved her letters .

We kept in touch through letters

Back then, my husband and I, both actors, traveled where the theatre work was — the Southeast for dinner theatre and the Northeast with children's theatre. At least weekly, there would be mail from Maureen. Sometimes, it was a postcard from her own travels or a New Yorker cartoon she found hilarious.

Often her letters were entertaining descriptions of her life — waitressing, working at a law firm . Or she'd tell about her risky adventures, driving (usually barefoot and low on gas) well after midnight to pick up a stranded buddy. She wrote about the crazy crash diets she invented. Some of Mo's letters were on company letterhead ("The boss thinks I'm typing up a brief, but ha! I'm really writing to you!"). Her handwritten notes had her large, loopy script covering page after page.

Shortly before she died, Maureen decided to move North. We had settled in Philadelphia by then, and she was eager to make a fresh start. Those final letters were filled with hopes and dreams for a new life ("Break me into Philly!"). When we traveled to Atlanta for her funeral, we saw Mo's open suitcases, silent reminders that she really had been on her way to us before the accident that ended everything for her.

I wanted my kids to know their aunt

As my five kids grew, I would try to describe their aunt, but my words always fell far short of capturing her personality. I would re-read the letters every year on the anniversary of her death and cry. Why didn't I give them to my children to read as well? It never seemed to be the right moment.

The decades passed. I finally gave Maureen's robe to Goodwill . Her cologne turned rancid and was thrown away. There were a couple of times when I shared a few letters, but by and large, they remained in a box.

October 2021 marked 40 years since my sister's death. Walking with a friend one day, I mentioned the letters, and she suggested I have them photocopied. Finally, there was a plan to preserve them and make a bound copy for each of my children. My friend helped accomplish this task, and now I had a precious gift to give the kids. Over the next few months, I gave them their books (my children were all grown now and living in various cities).

I don't bug them about reading the letters or quiz them about their reactions. It's up to them to decide how and when they read them. But I'm very glad they have these snapshots of Mo's life. I am grateful for this history of my beloved sister, in her own words. She shines through every sentence.

And I believe, through the letters, Maureen lives on, not just for me, but for the nieces and nephews she would have loved so much but never got to meet.

This Memorial Day, Ask Me About My Brother

write an essay about your sister

B efore my brother Ben was killed in Afghanistan in 2009, Memorial Day was one of my favorite holidays. It meant parties with friends and family, all of us excited by a long weekend and the promise of summer ahead. The fact that Memorial Day was also about violent and traumatic loss was a more abstract and theoretical concept—until the year those losses included my big brother with the contagious giggle and the drive to serve.

For the first few years after Ben’s death, Memorial Day made me angry and indignant. We’re honoring my brother’s death with mattress sales and BBQs? I thought to myself. Nevermind that my brother enjoyed nothing more than barbequing and a good nap. He loved Memorial Day and all its contradictions. He could hold grief and joy together in a way that seemed effortless.

I began to dread attending the Memorial Day events I once enjoyed with him. Would people say anything to me? And did I want them to? Siblings are often asked questions that no one would dare ask a bereaved parent. Questions about how he died. How he really died. “What exactly happened that day?” “What happened after?” “How are your parents doing?” It’s amazing how many questions people can ask about your sibling’s death without ever stopping to ask about their life.

But which is worse: having someone say something or not? I’ve learned that being at that barbeque, knowing everyone else is aware of your loss and its connection to the day but receiving no acknowledgment at all is perhaps the worst outcome of all. I would be left feeling like the elephant in the room, trying to act like everything is fine when it most certainly was not.

The loss of a sibling is a unique form of grief that can be deeply traumatic at any age, and its long-term impact can be seen in every aspect of who we are. Siblings are supposed to be one of our longest shared relationships, and when that is cut short—as it always is when war is involved—siblings are left to pick up the pieces within their nuclear family and support grieving parents and loved ones. Many surviving siblings diminish their own grief so as not to further burden their already broken families, and find themselves struggling to address their loss even years later.

Studies have shown that surviving siblings have increased rates of depression and somatic symptoms, a lower sense of meaningfulness and benevolence in the world, and lower perceived self-worth. Siblings are also more likely to experience complicated grief or prolonged grief disorder, a form of intensified grief that often includes difficulty accepting the loss, preoccupation with the circumstances surrounding it, and a painful combination of bitterness, anger, yearning, and longing. What’s more, siblings grieving on Memorial Day in particular have experienced a violent loss which increases the likelihood that they’re experiencing traumatic grief ; a powerful grief and PTSD cocktail that can rewire your brain and leave you feeling unsafe and utterly alone in the world.

Surviving military siblings, especially, find ourselves dealing with the trauma of war without the sibling we expected to grow old with, our parents grieving so deeply we have nearly lost them, too. Gina Moffa, a trauma-informed grief therapist in NYC and author of the book Moving On Doesn’t Mean Letting Go, explained to me that “people often don't understand how re-traumatizing anniversaries can be for someone who experienced a military loss. While people are having a barbecue or enjoying a long weekend, surviving siblings are dealing with the symptoms of trauma as if they've just heard the news again for the first time.”

So what if you haven’t lost a loved one to war, but you’re celebrating Memorial Day with someone who has? Trickier still: What if it’s someone you don’t know well? Social support is one of the strongest antidotes we have to the loneliness and isolation that thrive alongside grief. It breaks the isolation and denial that allows traumatic and complicated grief to flourish.

What if Memorial Day wasn’t about how our siblings died, but about how they lived? Let me talk about my brother’s love of grilled meat in any form. Let me recount our sibling hijinx while we cut the berry cobbler. Instead of asking me to recount his murder, let me tell you about the time he and cousin Steven bought a turkey fryer a few days before Thanksgiving and attempted to deep fry everything in Aunt Jane’s kitchen.

I know this conversation is not easy for anyone involved. Grief and loss is an incredibly complex topic, and if I hadn’t been through loss myself, there’s no way I’d know how to approach someone that's grieving in moments like this. I’m a deeply curious person and I’d probably be ask too many detailed questions. But that also might make me the perfect person to give some advice here. Curiosity is valid and, more than anything, it’s human. But that’s also what Google is for; don’t put someone on the spot asking about their trauma. If you meet someone at a Memorial Day celebration this year who has lost someone in the military, store that info away to Google later and in that moment, focus on life. Ask, “What was your brother or sister’s name?” “Is it helpful to talk about them?” And if yes, “What were they like?”

Your simple question can bring a surviving sibling back to life during an otherwise traumatic day. As Moffa explains, “when somebody checks in and they're compassionate, patient, and supportive; when they just sit with us no matter how long it's been, we feel tethered again. We are tethered to something that can make us feel alive and open the space for joy and life again. It brings us back to ourselves. That check in can be a life saving experience.”

Supporting someone who is grieving this Memorial Day doesn’t mean canceling your plans and spending the day at the cemetery or ignoring all those things you want to do on your day off. It simply means reaching out and checking in, including them in your plans, and making sure they feel seen and heard on that day.

This Memorial Day, you have the power to heal. You have the power to reframe the day from one that memorializes a violent death to one that opens up the door to conversations about life.
