The tourism sector is one of the most important sectors in New York City, with more than forty-one foreign and domestic tourists per year.

I have a short story about New York City that I always like to tell to my friends. It’s interesting because I could actually see the whole of New York City.

One day I was watching TV and I could see a person who could travel from one country to another by bicycle only. So I said why not, I’m on summer vacation now and I can do this experiment.

So I went to get my tools and some clothes and food ready. I had saved some money so I prepared everything, and told my father I would try to do it. He encouraged me a lot to try, provided that I follow up with him the stages of my journey.

Indeed, on Saturday morning, I set out for a visit to New York City. The arrival to New York was fast, and in the evening of the first day I was able to arrive because I live in Philadelphia.

I felt this great feeling now I can visit New York and see all its landmarks. Indeed, I have prepared a map of the places that I will go to.

First I went to Time Square and saw many hotels and theaters. All the lights are on and the street, despite its large size, is crowded with cars and people. I felt the fast life on this street. I would very much love to return to it someday and live by it.

Time Square is one of the wonderful areas that contains everything and does not require much transportation, as it has all the entertainment, hotels and shopping places. So I had a meal at McDonald’s and talked to my dad and then decided to visit another place.

I can’t find a better time than now. It is now ten in the evening and certainly the Statue of Liberty is now lit and reflects the true beauty of it. So I went there immediately. I was able to watch it and see a lot of tourists who want to take pictures next to it so I took some souvenir photo.

I would very much like to ride a helicopter and watch through it like others, but this price is very high, so I only watched the events.

Then I set off to see another landmark of New York City. I went to a building called the Empire State, which is now famous after the fall of the World Trade Center, being the tallest now. I could see how tall it is and take some pictures next to it.

Then I decided to pass by Central Park and spend the most time there until the morning. In fact, I was able to sit there and spend some time with other people who come for tourism. I took a rest and decided upon waking that it was time to visit Niagara Falls.

I went there to see her. I really enjoyed having breakfast there and walking around. There is a beautiful smell in the air and a gentle breeze from the waterfalls. I liked the place very much and it was nice to meet some of the people who encouraged and praised my experience.

Then I decided to go to several museums and see them. And indeed I did that from the beginning of the afternoon and after the end of this day of watching the monuments in the museums, I decided to go back to see the famous Fifth Avenue which has the best markets in New York and buy souvenirs for my father and mother.

And indeed I did that and enjoyed a lot inside it and went back home to tell my parents and friends everything. I really enjoyed this experiment and I hope to do it again.

New York Through The 5 Senses, As Experienced By An Outsider

I grew up in Los Angeles, and I love it. I feel so passionately about my town that I feel I must draw a clear line in the sand when it comes to our coastal rivalry with New York. The east coast, and New York in particular, represents such a stark contrast to our sunshine-and-sandals ways in California. Prior to this trip, most of my experiences with New York were brief 4- to 12-hour trips taking the train in from Connecticut or driving through to get my favorite foods. But this trip in particular, there’s something different.

Here, New York through the five senses:

New York has a smell. It first hit me when taking the subway in from JFK. That old familiar scent that’s a mix of a shirt from a vintage clothing store and sulfur. What is that? As New York has been here elevendy million years, that smell in the subway is probably a combination of a lot of things. Maybe urine, maybe wafts from the ethnic food stalls, or maybe it’s whatever is steaming up from those random pipes in the middle of the street. They say smell can be the most powerful trigger for memory and the endearing scent of this town reminds me of the fondness so many have for New York, that lived-in smell.

Walking out of the serenity of my friend’s apartment on the Upper West Side you’re hit with a wall of sound on Amsterdam Ave. The siren. The garbage truck. The taxi accelerating. The kid laughing. The click of heels. The language of French and the language of “French.” The sound of a businessman yelling into his iPhone. The Puerto Rican couple arguing about Facebook. Now take all that and multiply it by ten, pretend it’s a fish, then slap yourself in the face with it. Sound is energy and that’s perhaps the most distinct part of the vibe of this city.

You are sticky. You are grimy. You are happy. You’re constantly aware of the space (or lack thereof) around you because you’re always in contact with other people — may it be passing on the street or jammed into a line outside of a bar. You are touching the turnstile to get in to the subway. Your legs are touching the seat of a taxi. The feel of the Post , err, I mean Times , in your hand. Your shoes on the cobblestoned streets in Greenwich. The warmth of slice of pizza in your hand. All of these things become that special touch of New York.

There are people that eat to live and those that live to eat. I am the guy that drove four hours to Philadelphia from New Haven just to try the two warring cheesesteak places Pat and Geno’s because I saw them featured on the Travel Channel (then of course stopped at Serendipity in New York on the way back). A big part of New York to me is the food and that’s a draw for any trip I take. I know I’m not alone in this, as this is where a large portion of Michelin-starred restaurants reside, and this is where cooks come to be chefs. May it be from that special blend of gourmet burger at Minetta Tavern, a deceitful crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside cookie from Levain Bakery, the pure genius of the Halal carts, or the jarring, simple decadence of a slice of Artichoke Pizza. I can’t articulate in words the flavors of this town, but somehow, the food always feels like love.

New York is visually stunning, defined by the people and the buildings. The people are energy, feeling, and movement that create emotion, splashed against the canvas of the architecture. The buildings provide a stark, static contrast and permanence to a town that is constantly evolving. The lone flower growing out of a crack in the sidewalk is beautiful. The giant trees in Washington Square Park are beautiful. The rowboats and the ice skating in Central Park are beautiful. The view from the top of Rockefeller center is beautiful (and better than the Empire State building). The street carts are beautiful. Times Square at night is beautiful. The women are beautiful. The sleeping homeless man is beautiful. The doormen are beautiful. The train conductors are beautiful. The NYPD is beautiful. Everything here is beautiful, near overwhelming, if you’re ready to look at it full-on.

If you asked me two years ago about this town I would have said “I like New York but I’m not in love with it.” So if much of love is timing, then what does that mean for me now?

Writing the Essay may be your first encounter with the essay as an academic and creative form that embraces inquiry and acts as a path to knowledge, rather than a statement of opinion or position: instead of justifying assumptions, essay writing unwinds them. Here you can begin to explore evidence through open-minded questions and come to develop ideas through analysis. You will be introduced to the concept that writing begins with inquiry and persists through an ever-evolving exchange of ideas. Writing is a process of vision and revision: you will revisit and revise your own writing as you come to know your sources, audiences, and discourse communities with increasing expertise.

Over the course of a semester, you will come to understand the many ways that you may engage with texts and evidence and become confident in your choices. You will begin to transcend static, binary positions and instead build nuanced interpretations and conversations that allow simultaneous admiration and skepticism. Learning multiple modes of analysis leads not only to more dynamic and accurate treatments of evidence, but to a habit of thinking more deeply and intricately. A police officer in Utica, New York, shot and killed a 13-year-old on Friday night after they say he fled and pointed a replica handgun at them.

The teenage victim, identified as Nyah Mway, was approached by three officers Friday night after he and another 13-year-old matched the descriptions of robbery suspects, according to a release from the Utica Police Department.

Officers were patrolling the area to assist with two recent robbery investigations where "the suspects were described as Asian males who brandished a black in color firearm and forcibly demanded and stole property from victims," the release reads.

"Based on the listed identifying factors from the robbery, officers approached Nyah Mway and the other juvenile as they matched the robbery suspects' descriptions and were in the immediate vicinity of the previous robbery at nearly the same time of day," it continues.

Police also say Nyah Mway was violating New York vehicle and traffic law by walking in the roadway.

According to Utica Police and bodycam footage released, when "the officers attempted to conduct a citizen stop of the two 13-year-old juveniles" and tried to pat-frisk Nyah Mway, "he immediately fled on foot."

While fleeing, police said, Nyah Mway pulled out what appeared to be a handgun but was later found to be a replica GLOCK pellet gun and pointed it at the police officers.

One of the officers discharged his firearm once and shot the teen in the chest "during a ground struggle," Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said during a news conference Saturday.

He was given "immediate" first aid by the officers and taken to Wynn Hospital, where he died, according to Williams.

The officers involved in the incident were identified by the police department as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti.

Husnay was the officer who discharged his firearm and all three are on administrative leave with pay, according to police.

CNN has reached out to the Utica Police Benevolent Association for comment.

Body camera footage released by police shows chaotic struggle

The body camera footage released by police shows one officer saying he needs to pat down the two juveniles to make sure they don’t have any weapons in their possession. Nyah Mway immediately flees in the video.

Some of the footage was edited to insert a red circle around the replica gun and authorities froze the frames where the teen appears to point it at the officers.

The officers believed it was a handgun, police said, but it was later determined to be a replica of a GLOCK 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine, The Associated Press reported.

The replica gun carried by the teen "is in all aspects a realistic appearing firearm with GLOCK markings, signatures, detachable magazine, and serial numbers," Lt. Michael Curley, a police spokesperson, said via email to The Associated Press. "However ultimately it fires only pellets or BB’s."

The police body camera video shows a chaotic scene.

In the footage, Nyah Mway appears to point the replica handgun at police while he flees. The officers yell "gun," and one police officer tackles and punches the teenager. As they are wrestling on the ground, another police officer fires a single shot.

Bystanders scream at the police throughout the recordings, and at one point an officer yells back, “We’re trying to save him right now!”

The other youth was detained in the back of a police vehicle and was not involved in the shooting, The Associated Press reported.

The police department released the body camera videos following a public outcry as the shooting roiled Utica, a city with a population of 65,000. It is home to more than 4,200 people from Myanmar, according to The Center, a non-profit helping to resettle the refugees, The Associated Press reported.

Nyah Mway, who local media reports said was an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was identified as a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, The Associated Press reported.

There are two ongoing, parallel investigations into the incident, according to police: one by the New York State Attorney General, and another by the Utica Police Department’s Professional Standards.

Tensions run high during news conference

A news conference about the incident ended early Saturday after tensions ran high.

The conference was stopped several times after audience members audibly booed and interrupted the police chief and Utica mayor.

An interpreter struggled to speak over repeated audience outbursts.

Members of the community, including the youth’s family, were in attendance, The Associated Press reported.

"I know there’s a lot of emotions in this room and a lot of upset people," the police chief said. "But you’re asking us to be transparent – you’re asking us to be transparent, and when you shout over us, it makes it very difficult to do so."

A small group also staged a protest outside the Utica Police Station Saturday night. One protester’s sign reads "Justice for Nyah Mway. Forever 13."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrat George Latimer defeated U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman in New York’s 16th Congressional District on the strength of his showing in vote-rich Westchester County, according to an Associated Press analysis of initial vote results.

The result marks the first primary defeat this year of a Democratic U.S. House incumbent.

Here’s a look at how the AP determined the winner:

U.S. House, New York’s 16th District (D)

CANDIDATES: Bowman, Latimer

WINNER: Latimer

CALLED AT: 9:38 p.m. ET

POLL CLOSING TIME: 9 p.m. ET

ABOUT THE RACE: The heated primary highlights a deep division within the Democratic Party over the Israel-Hamas War. Bowman, a former middle school principal who was seeking a third congressional term, has been one of the U.S. House’s most vocal critics of the Biden administration for its support of Israel in what he’s described as genocide in Gaza. The contest attracted the attention of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, whose super PAC has spent nearly $15 million in the race to defeat Bowman. Latimer, the two-term Westchester County executive and former state Assemblyman, ran in part on his support of Israel and backed President Joe Biden’s agenda. The 16th Congressional District in New York City’s northern suburbs is made up mostly of southern Westchester County and includes a small portion of the Bronx.

WHY AP CALLED THE RACE: Bowman began the night with a lead in the vote count as the first vote results were reported from the Bronx. He would maintain an overwhelming advantage in the Bronx throughout the night, but Latimer quickly took the lead when Westchester County began reporting early voting results. At the time AP called the race, Latimer held a 26-point lead in Westchester with almost half of the county’s estimated vote tabulated. Westchester accounts for about 90% of the district’s population. Latimer was also ahead in the district’s moderately Democratic areas, which make up most of the district, while Bowman was far ahead in the district’s most heavily Democratic areas. To win, Bowman would need to significantly outperform Latimer among the district’s remaining votes. While that was likely in the Bronx, he had too large of a vote deficit to overcome in Westchester.

I Study Homelessness. I Wish More Places Looked Like This Shelter.

Matthew Desmond: My name is Matthew Desmond. I’m a writer and a sociologist at Princeton University.

I research and report on poverty in America. That work has taken me to a number of homeless shelters across the United States. Shelters housed in decommissioned military bases, old hotels, church basements, you name it.

Homeless shelters are a vital part of the safety net. But they have a mixed reputation, I think it’s fair to say. Some are thought to be too strict, others too lenient. I wanted to hear from shelter residents themselves. So last year I visited Water Street Mission in Lancaster, Pa.

Water Street Mission is housed in an old cotton mill. It’s this kind of giant brick complex. There are places to sleep. But they also have family rooms. They have kids’ play spaces. And importantly, there’s a medical wing where people can receive medical care, psychological care and even dental care during their stay at Water Street.
