Faculty Regalia, Student Graduate Gown

Verona student graduate regalia.

Verona black velveteen tams are available in two sizes; come with four, six, or eight sides; and come standard with a two-button gold bullion tassel.

Professional Faculty Regalia

Professional velvet tams are sized; available with four, six, or eight sides; and include standard tassels which are attachable to the top button on the tam. Handmade two-Button attached Gold Bullion tassels for doctoral tams are available for an additional price.

Note: For your hood, some degree colors are available only in velveteen. There is no difference in price.

Accessories: Included with a Professional Doctoral graduate gown (but not Verona gowns) is a contrasting cord for doctoral bars and front velvet panel, at no extra charge. In addition, your initials or name are embroidered in your Professional Doctor's Gown free, if you fill in the information on our order form. *Payment/Shipping/Rush Orders: We charge UPS Standard Ground insured for all orders (unless you request a faster shipping method with a Rush order, which will cost extra). Shipping fees are based on your exact location, and are calculated using our online ordering system. General turn-around production time right now is five to six weeks from order to shipping, though production times can vary depending on the time of the year. Rush orders may be available to reduce this production time to as little as 3 weeks for an additional fee. Rush fees vary depending on the time of the year and nearness to graduation season. Please note that production time is not the same as shipping time. Standard shipping time is usually around 7 days. Faster shipping methods are available for an additional fee, and can reduce the shipping time to as little as next day air.

University of California Doctoral Regalia

In the midst of end of the semester craziness, I ordered the gown late in the game. PhinisheD was able to ensure that it reached me before graduation. The gown is made well and has some weight to it. It looks and feels exactly like the official UVA regalia sans rotunda emblem. As I wore a stole, onlookers could not tell the difference. As I move into my tenure-track job, having this official regalia from my home institution that I wore on my graduation to hood others in the future means alot to me. Even more that it did not break the bank. That it comes in its own garment bag is an additional plus.

Thank you for the custom doctoral hood. The colors matched my university's very well and, more importantly, it is a very high quality hood and it reminds me how this regalia was actually standard dress for faculty once upon a time. I ordered a gown for the University of Notre Dame - since someone had done this previously, they already had the school emblems that go on the front panels. (If you're also at ND, you'll want to order the gown with embroidery, and 8-sided tam. I believe colors are royal blue and gold). I can't verify that the gown is identical to the official one because I live elsewhere and am not attending commencement, but it looks and feels great. Way better deal than going through the university. They can be a bit slow over email, but once they respond, customer service is excellent.

My gown fits perfectly - it is so nice and cozy! I am not really sure what the gowns provided by the university look/feel like, but this gown seems like it is high-quality!

These are excellent. The robe has buttons exactly where it is convenient for making everything hang properly. Love the pockets. Very fairly priced in comparison to other comparable robes (similar fabrics etc) and of comparable, if not better, quality. Regalia is a big, complicated, bulky garment - these hang nicely, the fabric feels nice, and they have nice finishing touches. Everything arrived well before graduation

I shopped for a long time to find the right doctoral gown and tam. I purchased the classic black gown with blue PhD velvet. Excellent quality. And the tam is perfect. Really, it is - I have a tam from another vendor, it cost the same, but nowhere nearly as nice as this one from PhinisheD - I'm tempted to wear it as a fall weather hat! Regarding the gown, this is a professional looking, faculty quality gown that can last decades of commencements and convocations, etc. If you aren't looking for wool or to spend more than $1,000, then I don't think you can get a better gown. Looks great -- a nice black matte. Feels great - heavy, substantial feel. Has pockets. There are a lot of gowns online for about the same price, but the photos on PhinisheD web site revealed the quality, and when I got the gown, the impressions I got from the Web site matched what I actually received. Academic Regalia

Cap and gown information.

Academic regalia is required for degree candidates at Commencement. All candidates who do not possess regalia must obtain their regalia from the Penn Bookstore, located at 36th and Walnut Streets. Detailed information is available on Grad Express .  

Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Degree Candidates

Graduates can purchase and pick up their Commencement regalia at the Penn Bookstore during “Grad Fair” – March 20-22, 2024 . The regalia is a commemorative keepsake. All regalia will be distributed on the second level of the Penn Bookstore near the textbook department. Degree candidates will have the opportunity to meet with staff members regarding any questions, such as ensuring the correct fit. Other graduation-related products and special promotions will also be available at the Grad Fair.

Doctoral candidates should consult with their respective Schools or Programs as there may be special requirements or recommendations regarding the preferred regalia.

Custom Doctoral Regalia

Custom regalia is typically chosen by doctoral candidates who plan to frequently participate in academic ceremonies requiring such attire. Please keep in mind that doctoral candidates are not required to purchase custom regalia and may find it more economical to choose the standard doctoral regalia. Custom doctoral regalia can only be obtained by having it shipped directly to you. You must place your order by March 8, 2024 , to receive the regalia by Commencement. Shipping fees apply. Those Unable to Pick Up Their Regalia During Grad Fair

Caps and gowns will still be available at the Penn Bookstore after the above dates, but graduates are strongly encouraged to obtain their regalia at the Bookstore during Grad Fair, when the store’s resources are dedicated to this process. If you are not currently on campus, you may order your regalia online and have it shipped directly to you. You must place your order by March 31, 2024 , to receive the regalia by Commencement. History of Academic Regalia

Like other American colonial colleges, Penn borrowed its 18th-century Commencement rituals directly from the English universities. In England the history of academic dress reaches back to the early days of the oldest schools.

Articles of clothing that will be visible at the neck and below the gown should be in keeping with the conservative style of the academic attire. The hood should be secured so that it will not slip off the shoulders. The cap is worn parallel to the ground; the tassel is worn in front and on the right side until the degree has been conferred.

In case of inclement weather at the live ceremony, please be advised that the dye in the gown may stain clothing.

The Cap and Gown Agency, a student-run organization, coordinates the ordering and distribution of commencement gowns for undergraduates and the graduate & professional students of Yale.

The Cap and Gown Agency has provided students with a convenient way to place their cap and gown orders online with the option to pay by credit card or student account billing. Note: if you opt to pay by student charge, student account billing will be available through 4 pm on March 29 to students who currently have the privilege of charging designated goods and services to their student accounts. Students can access online ordering through the Yale Hub   . After logging into the Main Menu, click on Commencement Menu , then Order Cap & Gown and follow the instructions.

Yale College Seniors:  

Seniors can pick up their attire at Payne Whitney Gym at the distribution times listed below.    The cap, gown and tassel fee is $34.00* and are yours to keep.

GRADUATE and PROFESSIONAL Students:

The fee for the Master’s cap, gown, hood and tassel is $63.00*; separately, the fee for the Master’s hood is $27.00* and the gown is $36.00*.

The fee for the Doctoral cap, gown, hood and tassel is $72.00*; separately, the fee for the Doctoral hood is $31.00* and the gown is $41.00*.

• Students receiving a degree from the Law School are required to purchase a tam. The cost for the Master’s gown, hood and tam is $89.00* and Doctoral gown, hood, and tam is $98.00*.

Note: No refunds will be given after the order deadline of April 10, 2024

*Price does not include CT Sales tax of 6.35%

Faculty Rental Attire:

Faculty should return the completed rental order form and payment to the designated contact person listed for their appropriate school or college. This list and other information are available at  commencement.yale.edu . For your convenience, faculty attire will be delivered to the designated contact person the week of the commencement ceremony.  Questions - contact asa@yale.edu . 

Purchase of Custom Regalia:

All keepsake robes are black, and all gowns and hoods are intended for relatively limited use. Degree candidates who wish to purchase custom Yale regalia (i.e. “Yale blue” doctoral or master’s gown, faille hood, doctoral tam or cap) may order directly from the Custom Department of Oak Hall Industries. Please note that “Yale blue” gowns are not available through the student Cap & Gown Agency.

Distribution Schedule Class of 2024

Attire may be picked up at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium John J. Lee Amphitheater, located to the right of the main entrance, during the hours listed below. Please bring your Yale I.D. If you are unable to pick up your attire at any of these times, you must make arrangements for someone else to pick it up for you. The person who is picking up your attire must present their Yale I.D. (or a valid official I.D.) with a note and your signature giving them permission to pick up your attire.

There will be  a very limited number of extra caps, gowns and hoods available during  regalia distribution.  All extras will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  At that time, an additional $10.00 late fee, will be added to the attire cost. 

Q. How can a student pay for her/his commencement attire?

A. Students can order online   and pay by credit card or student charge (for those students who currently have the privilege of charging designated goods and services to their student accounts, charging will be available to them until 4 pm on March 29). 

Q. What if I am graduating with two degrees?

A.   You will have the option of selecting a “Primay” degree which will determine your gown selections and a “Joint” degree  option to purchase a second hood if you desire. 

Q. What if I can’t pick up the gown myself?

A. If you are unable to pick up your attire at any of these times, you must make arrangements for someone else to pick it up for you. The person who is picking up your attire must present their Yale I.D. (or a valid official photo I.D.) with a note and your signature giving them permission to pick up your attire.

Order Cap & Gown

Commencement attire.

The ceremonial attire for your big day is customized to mark the occasion. This outfit means celebrating you and the biggest academic milestone you’ve reached yet.

All graduates attending the Commencement ceremony must wear custom IU apparel. You simply order your graduation apparel from our Commencement partner, Herff Jones. Your order consists of a robe, cap, tassel, and hood for those obtaining a graduate degree or a stole of gratitude for undergraduates.

The gown you’ll wear is a lightweight black gabardine robe with braided crimson piping. Graduates will also wear a cap adorned with a colored tassel representing their graduating school or discipline of study. See more information and examples of apparel and tassels below.

Returning Apparel

After the ceremony, you must return your rented gown and hood to Herff Jones using the prepaid shipping label provided. You may also reuse the shipping box. Failure to return apparel may result in a fine.

All graduates receiving Associate's and Bachelor’s degrees must return the gowns; you will keep the cap, tassel, and stole.

All graduates receiving Master’s and doctorate degrees must return the gowns and hoods; you will keep the cap/tam and tassel.

Types of Gowns

Bachelor’s and associate gowns.

The bachelor’s and associate gowns have a closed front and open sleeves.

Candidates for bachelor’s and associate degrees also receive a crimson Stole of Gratitude, embellished with the Indiana University seal, which they wear during the ceremony.

Master’s Gowns

The master’s gown has extra long, closed sleeves, with a small opening at the wrist. The end of the sleeve is square, with an arc cut away just above the bottom.

Doctoral Gowns

The doctoral gown has velvet panels down the front and voluminous, bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve has three velvet bars. The velvet is usually black, but may reflect the color of the discipline.

Find Your Tassel and Hood Colors

All students wear caps with tassels from the school they’re graduating from. Candidates for graduate degrees also wear hoods that reflect their fields of learning.

Faculty Hoods, Tassels, and Sashes

If you have a Ph.D. from IU, you’ll wear a royal blue hood and gold tassels. If you’ve received a Ph.D. from somewhere else, your regalia will reflect that institution.

If you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree, you’ll wear regalia that reflects your highest degree and the granting institution.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024 graduates!

We are looking forward to all the in-person commencement ceremonies. Wearing regalia is both traditional and required for student participation in the procession and ceremony at the University Commencement Ceremonies.

Whether you attend the in-person events or not, you may order your Cap & Gown! All Cap & Gown outfits are the same quality to be used whether at home or attending the in-person ceremonies on campus.

Ordering for May 2024 will open at the end of January 2024. Please check back for updates. Thank you!

•If selecting "Not Attending Event" option you are purchasing an outfit and it will be sent to the address entered with a small shipping fee. You may order now and until April 27th to have it mailed to your address. This option is for those who are not in Ithaca in May or who would like to have outfits for photo opportunities to share with friends and family in April and early May. Be sure to enter the address where you will be located between now and May 5, 2024 . Please allow 2-3 weeks to receive your order, after placing the order. Carefully plan where to have your outfit shipped if not in the Ithaca area.

Each cap & gown keepsake order contains a full set of regalia with the pieces, styles, and colors appropriate to the degree being conferred.

Tassel – Tassel color represents one’s conferring college, and may be kept as a souvenir.  In addition to the free detachable tassel, students have an option to purchase a Cornell red & white souvenir tassel, and are welcome to wear both tassels on their caps at graduation.

Hood – A hood is part of graduate degree regalia (no hoods for undergraduate degrees) and represents one’s field of study.  An appropriate hood will be supplied with graduate degree orders.

Cap – All mortar boards and soft tams are one-size-fits-all, so no measuring is necessary when ordering.  The appropriate cap style will be supplied with regalia orders.  Caps may be tastefully decorated and kept as a souvenir.

Pick Up in Teagle Hall

Cap & gown distribution takes place on campus the week of commencement. The vendor brings all pre-ordered outfits to distribute, as well as a large supply of regalia available for walk-in orders for those who did not pre-order.

Pick up in Teagle Hall, 1st floor Multipurpose Room on any of these dates:

May 21, 22, 23, 24 10am-6pm (Tues.-Fri.)

May 25 & 26 8am-6pm (Sat. & Sun.)

If you pre-ordered online, your pre-packaged outfit will be ready for you to pick up. Show your student ID to receive the outfit you ordered. You may have a friend pick up your outfit for you. Give your friend a copy of your order confirmation email (or send text/email to your friend with your full name, height, college) for your friend to show the vendor that you gave them permission to pick up for you.

PhD degree candidates and/or Faculty wishing to purchase their own regalia through Herff Jones must order by April 1st to allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. Regalia purchases are personal transactions separate from keepsake options above.

Commencement Regalia

Purchase Regalia

All Commencement participants should purchase regalia early in order to obtain proper sizes and colors.  The deadline for ordering regalia to ship to home has now passed. We look forward to seeing you at Commencement May 9-11.

• Gown – All graduates wear navy gowns that vary in style between the level of completed degrees. Associates degree students should purchase a Bachelor’s level gown.  Associates degree students only wear the gown, cap, and stole. Postgraduate degree students should purchase the Master’s level gown.
• Cap – Graduates wear a mortarboard and tassel. Doctoral graduates wear a velvet tam.
• Tassel – Attaches to the cap. Commonly worn on the right before the student receives their degree and moved to the left after it’s presented.
• Hood – A scarf that drapes over the shoulders and down the back. Has a strip of color unique to the student’s program. The inner part is red, white, and blue. Graduates receiving an Associate’s degree do not wear a hood with their regalia.
• Stole – Resembles an oversized necktie with two wide ends and is worn draped around the neck to hang down the front. Liberty stoles are embroidered with the Liberty seal and are red.
• Honors Cord/Medallion –  Honors cords are awarded to Undergraduate students and medallions are awarded to Graduate level students. Certificate graduates are not eligible for honors. For further information about honors, please refer to the Honors page.

Military cords – These are provided to active duty and veteran students only.

Societal Cords – For information on any cords worn in representation of a society, contact the society or departmental office.

Custom Doctoral Regalia – The following doctoral programs have custom regalia available for rental only. The deadline for ordering regalia has now passed, as we can no longer guarantee delivery of your order before you depart for Commencement exercises.

Is Graduation Regalia Priceless Or Just Overpriced?

At a banquet hall in Downey last spring, Ángel González and his family convened for a rapturous night of banda .

Clad in his graduation regalia, González and his loved ones danced to the beat of brass and percussion for hours. He’d just earned a doctorate from San Diego State University, and González — whose parents hail from the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Guanajuato — was the first in the history of his family to do so.

At one point in the long night, González took off his heavy black-and-red gown and wrapped it around his father. Then, one of his sisters put on his tam, the beret-like hat professors wear at graduation ceremonies, while another sister put on his hood. The youngest one donned his stole.

“Everybody had a piece of the regalia,” said González. He thought it was fitting. “I did this for us,” he said.

For undergraduates in Southern California, a cap and gown generally costs about $50. For students earning master’s degrees, graduation regalia also includes hoods specific to their major, so the price jumps to approximately $100. Custom-made regalia for doctoral candidates hovers around the $1,000 range. What’s perhaps most striking is that, even among UCs and CSUs, prices can vary widely.

Graduation regalia can be pricey, González noted. But for him, the attire has been priceless.

A Family Degree

González captured why that is in a video he posted on social media. In it, his father dances joyously, clad in his son’s gown and a tejana , a traditional cowboy hat. In an accompanying caption, González wrote: “Dad only went 3rd grade, but it’s OK I got him and brought home the doctorate.”

As the night unfolded, González and his family kept paying the band for another hour, then another. “And then the venue was, like, ‘That's it, y’all. You’re done,’” he said.

Leading up to the event, González also had a photoshoot. “Vamos a hacer un recorrido” (We’re going to go on a tour), he told his parents. Then, he instructed them to wear the graduation regalia he’d given them over the years.

It had been on a Mother’s Day when González earned his bachelor’s degree from Whittier College. And so, he presented his first cap and gown to her as a gift. “Aquí lo tiene” (I present this to you), he told her, using the formal second person usted in Spanish. “Feliz día de las madres.”

When González was earning his master’s degree, also at San Diego State, his father became gravely ill and was hospitalized for nearly a year. Because his father was the main breadwinner, González took a leave of absence to help his family. But as soon as his father recovered, he resumed his studies.

“He gave me the strength to finish,” said González, who’s now a postdoctoral scholar in the Pullias Center for Higher Education at USC. After his second graduation ceremony, he gave his father his master’s regalia.

For the photoshoot, González and his parents wore their regalia and posed for pictures at all the schools that have nurtured him, starting with 28th Street Elementary School in South LA and Stanford Avenue Elementary School in South Gate. Then, they made their way over to South Gate Middle School and Bell Gardens High School, before heading to the universities.

To Pay For Regalia, Grads Get Creative

Let it be known that Dr. Ángel de Jesús González did not pay for the entirety of his doctoral regalia.

He didn't have that kind of money. But he does have a family who loves him.

Just like quinceañeras, in which family members become padrinos (godparents) after signing up to cover the cost of anything from the birthday girl’s dress to the DJ at her party, González created a spreadsheet and invited his family to pitch in.

“So we had padrinos de tam, padrinos de stole, padrinos of everything, ” he said laughing.

For Sandra Portocarrero, regalia cost relief was a matter of luck.

She began her postsecondary career at Berkeley City College, then transferred to UC Berkeley, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. This spring, she’s slated to graduate from Columbia University with a doctorate in the same field. It’s an accomplishment she’s proud of.

“You know, not a lot of people like me graduate from Columbia,” said Portocarrero, who’s a formerly undocumented immigrant from Peru and a mother.

Still, she was taken aback by the cost of the graduation regalia — this on top of all the other things she’s had to pay for this year, including the copyright for her dissertation.

But whether seen as frivolous or meaningful, regalia is an expectation to participate in commencement ceremonies. Jostens and Herff Jones, the companies that supply this attire for the bulk of universities in Southern California, did not respond to requests for comment about how pricing is determined.

To express her distress, Portocarrero took to Twitter, where she got a response from Briana Ronan, an associate professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Ronan reached out to Portocarrero and offered up her old Columbia regalia. Because professors are required to wear it at commencement ceremonies, she explained, her employer purchased a new set for her, so she had one to spare.

Portocarrero accepted the gift, promising to start a regalia tradition à la “ The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants .” Moving forward, Ronan’s tam and gown will be made available to other first gen students in need.

“I already have a few people in mind,” said Portocarrero.

“I think it's a lovely idea to pass it on to somebody else so that they can wear it on their big day,” Ronan added.

Instead Of Purchasing Regalia, Can Students Just Rent It?

To help students for whom the cost of regalia can be prohibitive, some local colleges — including Cal State Bakersfield , Cal State Northridge, Occidental College and USC — let undergraduates rent their caps and gowns. (Typically, students get to keep the accompanying commemorative tassels.)

At Cal State Northridge, most students rent their regalia, said Director of Media Relations Carmen Ramos Chandler. Instead of paying $215 for a cap and gown , undergraduates can borrow them for $38 .

Other universities sell undergraduate regalia for a lot less. At UCLA, for instance, bachelor’s regalia costs $32, and students don’t have the option of renting it. Master’s regalia, on the other hand, can be rented for $41 — which is significantly less than paying approximately $300 to buy the attire. Doctoral regalia, which starts at about $600, can be rented for $43.

Bachelor's And Master's Degrees

At Southern California's public and private universities, the most basic regalia — cap, gown and tassel — often retails for $50 to $100. Hoods often cost extra. Very few CSUs and UCs give undergraduates the option of renting.

You've spent another four or more years in graduate school, and the price for graduation regalia has gone way up. At UCLA, for instance, a set of doctoral regalia starts at $600 to buy, but only $43 to rent.

What About The Fancy Hat That Doctoral Graduates Wear?

That soft cap is called a tam, and it's often a big expense when it's custom made. USC's Trojan Tam, made of cardinal red velvet, costs $149.

But renting is not an option at all universities. Plus, over the years, some colleges have stopped offering this alternative, including Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine.

“We moved away from rental regalia because it was not a sustainable option," said Sheri Ledbetter, a communications officer at UC Irvine. “Once one factors in the costs of transportation and the chemicals used in cleaning and processing, it became clear that the purchase options were actually more sustainable than the rental option.”

“For many years all of our gowns were only available for rent,” said Jim Milbury, a news media services specialist at Cal State Long Beach. “In 2020, after much research, we made the switch to purchase. Industry research had [shown] that the fuel used to transport the gowns back and forth as well as the chemicals used in cleaning were harder on the environment than an outright purchase.”

Milbury added that Cal State Long Beach’s gowns are made from recycled materials.

Another way colleges work to cut costs for students is by offering two types of doctoral regalia. At Cal State Long Beach, for example, doctoral graduates can purchase a generic gown instead of the custom-made attire worn by faculty members. And so, instead of paying hundreds of dollars, they can get their tam, gown, tassel and hood for $69.99. UC Riverside offers a similar option. There, graduates can get a gown and hood for just under $100. The university provides complimentary tams , which can be quite pricey — $154 for UCs — when they’re custom made.

Historically, some campuses have sponsored regalia for students. San Diego State Alumni, for instance, have raised thousands of dollars to cover the cost of caps, gowns and tassels for undergraduates. And at Cal State Bakersfield, students who participate in Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), which are designed to help students whose families may be struggling financially, get their caps and gowns for free .

But many students are on their own.

“Regalia is the physical embodiment of everything that you've done, all that hard work, and it's beautiful . . . It means a lot to be there on stage, getting hooded by your advisor. It's a really big and important moment,” said Cal Poly’s Ronan. “And it's really crushing when you get to the end of your program and you see that there are all these hidden costs involved in that celebration.”

Undergraduate and Master’s Candidates

The University of Texas at Dallas has regalia that is required for all Commencement participants. Bachelor’s and master’s graduate regalia are available for purchase online and at the UT Dallas Bookstore . The UT Dallas bookstore is the official licensed retailed for undergraduate and master’s regalia. Students graduating with Latin Honors may pick up their honors medallions at the UT Dallas campus bookstore.

Doctoral Candidates

Doctoral regalia are available for purchase by sending an email to Herff Jones . The UT Dallas bookstore is the official licensed partner for doctoral regalia. Doctoral graduation candidates must order their regalia through Herff Jones by the deadlines below.
