Review on Sheep and Goat management practices, Constraints, Opportunities and Marketing Systems in Ethiopia

goat production, 2015
Introduction Ethiopia consists a huge and diverse goats population. The diversified genetic resources is vital for the present and future livelihoods of the large rural farmers in the country. In Ethiopia, there was about 22.6 million heads of goats that were distributed across different agro-ecological zones of the country (CSA 2012). These resources provide a vast range of products and various services such as immediate cash income, meat, milk, skin, manure, risk management and social functions to many smallholder farmers in the country (Adane and Girma 2008). They also serve as sources of foreign currency through meat and live animal exports (Berhanu et al 2006) and have various social and cultural values; nevertheless the wider variations exist among different cultures, socio-economies and agro-ecologies of the country. Ethiopia has large goat resources than most of African countries. The relative importance of these resources and their products varied from region to region and are largely determined by ecological and economic factors. Traditionally, keeping large number of goats was considered as an expression of wealth and/or social status in the rural community. However, with ever increasing human population and drastically shrinking of farming land, goat production is becoming a predominant farming practice, particularly for the landless youth and poor families in the rural areas, while their counterparts, the large ruminants, are facing difficulty during critical seasons of feed shortage (Legesse et al 2008). On other hands, efficient livestock marketing system plays an essential role in assuring better income and benefit for producers. Production without access to market is also a problem for many livestock owners in tropical countries (Lightfoot et al 2005). In Ethiopia, small ruminant production lacks reliable marketing outlets that would benefit small scale small ruminant producers; the pastoralists and consumers (AIS 2003). In many parts of the world, rural people often claim the only reason why they cannot improve their living standards is the difficulties in accessing markets (IFAD 2003). Also with limited opportunities for access to markets goats are often kept beyond their optimum productive levels. This study was therefore, carried out in Yabello woreda of Borana zone. The Borana rangeland was highly endowed with various species of vegetations dominated by mixtures of perennial and woody plants, trees and shrubs with varying composition in response to intensity of grazing and browsing (Coppock 1994). The Long-eared Somali goats have been so far characterized as a dominant goats

Sheep and Goat Production Handbook for Ethiopia, 2008
Ethiopia, with over 42 million head, has the third largest number of sheep and goats among African nations and ranks eighth in the world. Traditionally, sheep and goats have served as a means of ready cash and a reserve against economic and agricultural production hardship. However, the proximity of Ethiopia to large Middle Eastern markets demanding export quality sheep and goat carcasses and an increase in the domestic demand for small ruminant meat is leading to a change in the importance and scale of sheep and goat production. No longer are sheep and goats subsistence livestock species only. Economic opportunities exist for small ruminant producers to supply animals to both the export and domestic markets. Taking advantage of these opportunities requires overcoming many barriers to increased productivity, including nutrition, health, reproduction/genetics, marketing, and management. This Sheep and Goat Production Handbook for Ethiopia is designed to assist in overcoming these barriers. Publication of this book is part of the Ethiopia Sheep and Goat Productivity Improvement Program (ESGPIP), a USAID-funded project involving the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD) and two American universities, Prairie View A&M University and Langston University. The Sheep and Goat Production Handbook for Ethiopia is the first text devoted to small ruminant production written exclusively for Ethiopian conditions by Ethiopian scientists. The broad scope of the handbook allows it to serve a variety of audiences. Its primary use will be as a training resource and reference handbook for Kebele Development Agents (KDAs) in their quest to transfer knowledge and skills to sheep and goat producers. Other stakeholders, such as non-governmental agencies and development workers will also find the book useful in their efforts to enhance sheep and goat productivity. The depth and coverage of information on all aspects of small ruminant production also renders the book usable in an academic environment as a resource or classroom text. The outline for the wide array of topics covered in the handbook was prepared by the ESGPIP team with inputs from the MoARD and the American Institute for Goat Research of Langston University. Leading authorities for each topic were sought from universities, research institutes, and the MoARD to develop the handbook’s content. Each chapter was then rigorously reviewed by relevant professionals and partner institutions to ensure the content would be applicable and useful to KDAs and farmers. Draft chapters were used in training KDAs in six regions of Ethiopia and comments received from KDAs themselves on ways to improve the handbook’s usefulness. It is the sincere belief of the ESGPIP team that the Sheep and Goat Production Handbook for Ethiopia, along with a companion series of Technical Bulletins on specific issues of small ruminant production, will greatly contribute towards improving the productivity of sheep and goats. Improving small ruminant production will enhance food security and help to bring about meaningful changes in the livelihoods of Ethiopian farmers and the country's economy. At this juncture, I would like to express my special thanks to Drs. Alemu Yami, Training Officer at the ESGPIP, and Roger Merkel, Langston University, for devoting much effort and time to bring the handbook to its current state. The study was conducted in Gondar town from February to May, 2015 with the objective to assess sheep production and marketing system in Gondar town. Four representative kebeles (kebele 18, kebele 20, kebele 15 and kebele 16) were selected by simple random sampling technique out of the selected kebeles, 30 sheep producers were selected purposively. The study was carried out through informal and formal surveys. The purpose of sheep production by producer in the study area was for cash income (43.3%), home slaughter (26.67%), cash income and meat (23.33%) and manure (6.67%). Producers on average had 4 heads of sheep (n = 30) per household. The main feed sources for sheep in the area were natural pasture (60%) and crop residue (40%). In addition, most producers supplement salt (20%), food left over (16.67%), nuge cake (16.67%), dashen brewery by-product (10%) and 10% atella (a local beer residue). There was feed shortage problem both during the dry and rainy seasons in the study area. P...
Review article, 2022
This review aims to generate basic information for beneficiaries and users about the indigenous breed of Ethiopian goats and their productive performance, social and economic significance of goat production, and major goat production programs in Ethiopia. Some of the constraints and opportunities for goat production are also discussed in this paper. Ethiopia has a large number of livestock; 65.35 million cattle, 39.89 million sheep, 50.50 million goats, 8.98 million donkeys, 2.11 million horses, 7.70 million camels, 0.38 million mules and 48, 96 million chickens. The country has the largest number of goats on the continent, which serves several functions for the communities. In Ethiopia, goat production represents 16.8% of the total meat and 16.7% of milk consumption. Indigenous Ethiopian goats are less productive than cold breeds. Goat production was largely affected by food shortages, diseases and parasites, market depressions, low genetic production and severe water shortages. There are ways to increase goat production, as various development partners are involved in higher education. Currently, research and development is underway on goat development. It is important to use modern production systems with advanced technology in urban and urban areas and to improve the traditional system in rural areas by adding food and better medical care.
