Promoting idea sharing via Idea Paper (past information)
Proposal of special feature in ecological research.
Title: Promoting idea sharing via Idea Paper
Handling Editor : Takeshi Miki (Ryukoku University), Masahiro Nakamura (Hokkaido University), Kazuaki Matsui (Kindai University)
Outline with aims :
With this special feature, we intend to propose a new style of scientific article, named “idea paper”, which aims to promote sharing of research ideas. This is a kind of experiment to better design the framework for developing research ideas in a community. Through the communications between the editors, reviewers, and authors during reviewing and publication processes, we are going to revise and improve the framework of the idea paper (e.g., paper format and reviewing criteria). This process will mature a proposed idea to seeing realized in a community and make the “idea paper” distinguishable from Review and Perspectives.
Although our final goal is to propose the framework of the idea paper as a regular section in Ecological Research , this final goal is beyond our focus in the special feature proposed here.
The aims of idea paper are 1) to promote research idea sharing by making it easier to publish new ideas compared to original papers and the existing types of review/perspective papers, and then 2) to advance ecological sciences by encouraging i) maturation of immature ideas in a community, ii) group research based on the shared research ideas, and iii) sharing/recycling the ideas that have (will) not be tested by the proposed scientist group.
Submission deadline :
Manuscript length and format
The maximum length of an idea paper is three pages , which corresponds to approximately 1830 words (including References) plus 250 words abstract. When figures/tables are included, the corresponding space should be included in 1830 words. A figure or table of which size is a single column width and one-quarter to one-third of a page height consumes approximately 140 words’ space. The idea paper should follow the specific format (see the next section). The items that are not specified below should follow the general guideline of Ecological Research .
Format with section headings
The title of the paper should start with "Idea Paper:" (2020/03/02 modified).
[1] Research question
Clearly present the target research question covered in this paper.
Clearly describe why the target research question is valuable (e.g., interestingness, ecological significance, position in the focal scientific disciplines).
[3] Relevant hypothesis
Clearly discuss at least one of the major relevant hypotheses that have given some solutions to the target research question; cite several related papers and explicitly discuss the shortcomings of 1) these hypotheses or 2) their predictions.
[4] New research idea
Present a new research idea.
[5] How to solve the question through the new idea
Explain how to solve the shortcomings of the relevant hypotheses with the new ideas? Consider the following two points in the description.
[5-1] Cite the existing ideas in other research fields (if any), which are related to the proposed idea, and summarize the similarities and dissimilarities between the new idea and the existing ideas. Note that the citations here are independent from the relevant hypotheses in [3].
[5-2] Briefly and specifically describe the potential approaches and techniques to obtain empirical data or generate theoretical predictions in order to validate the proposed new idea.
[6] References
Prepare the reference list following the guideline for Ecological Research .
Systematic keyword selection
Choose at least one keyword from each of the following two categories. In addition, supply one to three additional keywords (e.g. the target organisms or systems).
1) The focal scale of ecological hierarchy
Individual (e.g. physiology and behavior), population, evolution, community, ecosystem
2) Potential method to validate the new idea
Observation, experiment (including field experiment), mathematical and computational modeling (e.g. theoretical dynamic modeling), data analysis (e.g. statistical modeling and empirical dynamic modeling)
Peer review checklist (Publication criteria)
Rating method
For each question, grade 0(No), 1, 2, 3 (Completely Yes), or N/A
For each question, reviewers should explain their answers and may point out any related issues (if any)
[1] Is the research question specified?
[2] Is the value of solving the question specified? Subjective assessments of ecological significance of the proposed research idea are not a part of evaluation.
[3] Are relevant papers cited and are their interpretations and criticisms appropriate?
[4] Is the idea concrete? Isn’t it just reinvention of the ideas that have been proved to be invalid in the research field?
[5.1] Are appropriate papers cited, which are linked to the proposed idea? Is the summary of similarities or dissimilarities clear?
[5.2] Are methods and techniques specifically provided for testing the proposed new idea?
[6] Is the selection of keywords appropriately reflecting the content of the paper?

What Is Ecology?
Table of Contents
Ecology is the study of how living things interact with each other and their environment. It explores relationships between plants, animals, and their surroundings, helping us understand how nature works and how different elements in ecosystems connect.
What Are The 6 Topics Studied In Ecology?
Ecology studies the relationships between living things and their environment. Here are six topics studied in ecology:
- Ecosystems: Examining how living organisms, like plants and animals, interact with each other and their non living surroundings, such as soil, water, and air.
- Biodiversity: Analyzing the variety of life in different ecosystems, including the number and types of species present.
- Population Dynamics: Understanding how the numbers of individuals in a species change over time, including factors like birth rates, death rates, and migration.
- Community Interactions: Exploring how different species in a specific area interact with each other, such as through competition or cooperation.
- Ecological Succession: Studying the increasing changes in ecosystems over time, including how new communities of plants and animals replace older ones.
- Conservation Biology: Focusing on protecting and preserving ecosystems and species, especially those facing threats or endangerment.

Pages: 575-578. First Published: 27 July 2020. We propose and introduce a new type of scientific article, referred to as an "Idea Paper," which is aimed at promoting the sharing of research ideas. The formatting and publication criteria of the idea paper are presented, and six articles have been published as the first series of the Idea Paper.
4 NEW RESEARCH IDEA. I describe a model for generating and discussing the temporal dimensions of ecological disturbance based on a popular component of electronic musical instruments—the envelope generator (Deutsch & Deutsch, 1979). This component determines the change over time in its output (typically used to control amplitude), and ...
The aims of the idea paper are 1) to promote research idea sharing by making it easier to publish new ideas compared to original papers and the existing types of review/perspective papers, and then 2) to advance ecological sciences by encouraging i) maturation of proposed ideas in a community, ii) group research based on the shared research ...

Ecology is a leading journal publishing original research and synthesis papers on all aspects of ecology, with particular emphasis on cutting-edge research and new concepts. We introduce a heuristic model for studying the evolution of ecological ideas based on Thomas Kuhn's concept of the development of scientific paradigms.
Herein, biodiversity and ecological integrity can be expressed by phylogenetic diversity and species intactness indices based on abundance, respectively. According to my hypothetical figure, the metrics of biodiversity and ecological integrity are potentially not positively but rather negatively related to ecosystem services.
