How to Recycle Paper and Make Your Own Handmade Paper

Beautiful handmade papers can be purchased from arts and craft stores. These lovely papers make great additions to a wide variety of card making, scrapbooking , gift wrapping, and other paper craft projects. While traditional papermaking methods require special equipment, such as a press, there are alternatives. If you are just starting out, or want to make small amounts of handmade paper, it is easy to make paper at home using simple household supplies and waste paper that is turned into paper pulp.

Making Simple Handmade Paper at Home

Many papermakers use a mold and deckle to produce paper. This is perfect for producing large pieces of paper. It is possible to make smaller pieces of paper without this equipment and using only a plastic container lid or cookie cutter as a mold. Because you are not using a paper press, deckle, or other special equipment, the end result may be thicker, charmingly rustic, and less refined-looking than handmade paper produced using special equipment.

This process is ideal for making small pieces of paper. While the finished paper can be cut with scissors or a craft knife , making smaller pieces of paper with a finished size or shape result in textured edges.

Types of Paper Used to Make Paper Pulp

Many different types of paper can be used to make paper pulp at home. This includes newspaper (although the newsprint will give a gray look to the paper), uncoated junk mail, tissue, construction paper, or even clean toilet paper. Some types of cards and card stock can also be recycled this way. The inner rolls from toilet tissues, for instance, can create a textured effect in handmade paper.

Easily customize your handmade paper with additives, such as seeds , leaves, glitter, yarns, fibers, or a wide variety of other items you can mix in with the pulp. Handmade paper can also be colored with dyes, food colorants, or pieces of colored tissue paper. Create an impression in the wet paper pulp by using rubber stamps as another form of decoration.

What You'll Need

Equipment / tools.

• Hand blender
• Multiple towels or cloths
• Mixing bowl
• Plastic container lid or large cookie cutter (use as a mold)
• Rubber stamp (optional)
• Piece of plastic sheet or parchment paper
• Additives (optional)
• Colorants (optional)
• Card stock (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the paper.

The first stage in making paper pulp is preparing the paper. Here, we used a mix of paper tissues and the inner roll from toilet tissue rolls.

• Tear the paper and card into small pieces and put it in a mixing bowl.
• Cover the pieces with water and leave to soak.

Soaking Time

The paper should be fully soaked within a couple of hours, however, you may want to leave it overnight or even for a day in order for it to be fully soaked. This helps to break down the paper to make pulp.

Pulp the Paper With a Hand Blender

Use a hand blender to pulp the wet paper mix.

• Blend the paper pulp mix until all the pieces have been removed and there is a single mass of paper pulp.
• After the paper is thoroughly pulped, squeeze the pulp to remove some of the excess water.

Substitute Hand Blender

It is possible to do this without a hand blender. A potato masher, for instance, will give the same effect—albeit with a little more effort.

Press the Paper Pulp Into the Mold

• Line the plastic container lid with a piece of plastic or parchment paper. This makes turning the paper out easier.
• Start to press the paper pulp into the mold or cookie cutter.
• Keep pressing the paper pulp firmly into the mold so it is evenly distributed.

This is a messy and wet process, therefore it is best to work on a well-protected work surface.

Press the Water Out of the Paper

• Use a towel to press firmly on the paper pulp to remove the water. The harder you press the more water will be removed and the firmer the end result.
• Tip the lid slightly to drain the water.

For Smoother Paper

Smooth towels, such as tea-towels or tea-cloths, will produce smoother results. A brayer (small hand roller) could be used to flatten the surface of the paper pulp even more.

Turn the Paper Out from the Mold

• When the paper is firm and as much water as possible has been removed, turn the paper out onto a dry towel or cloth which has been placed on a flat surface.
• Use a dry towel to press more water from the paper.
• Place the paper in a warm and dry spot to fully dry.

Dry Paper Faster

Some people place the paper in a warm oven or toaster oven to dry. This can be useful when the weather is cold or if you are working in humid surroundings. 

Finishing the Paper

When the paper is thoroughly dried it can be cut and decorated as required. The surface of the handmade paper is rough and not completely flat, however, this helps to highlight the handmade nature of the paper and emphasize that no two pieces will be truly the same.

How to Make Paper (Easy Method of Making Recycled Paper)

In this step-by-step tutorial, you will learn how to make papers at home. It’s one of the simplest methods of making handmade recycled papers and needs only a few tools. Enjoy!

Did you know, If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year [ source ]? Yes, Papers are one of the most commonly used items in all places. Allow us to take you through a fun and eco-friendly activity on how to make paper from old and used papers. Turn all those used scrap papers, old newspapers, and magazine pages into recycled paper with the help of our tutorial. The whole process may take a little longer than other craft activities but we promise you that it is worth it. Our handmade papers do not require any fancy craft tools, or even any frame, you probably have all the supplies at home. So let’s get started. 

The rustic look of handmade paper gives such an artistic vibe and the very thought of engaging in an eco-friendly project is surely very satisfying. Check out the list of supplies, grab all of them and follow our tutorial to craft yourself some green papers!

How to Make Paper by Recycling Old Papers

List of supplies to make recycled paper.

• Old/used papers (magazines, newspapers, notebooks, etc.)
• A pair of scissors
• Plastic netted piece
• Clothe (preferably cotton)
• No-sticky surface

Instructions to make Recycled Paper

Step 1: tear old papers, magazines or newspapers.

Collect enough scrap papers (could be sheets from an old notebook, old newspapers or magazines, etc.) and tear the papers into small bits. You can also use scissors to cut them into small pieces. About 1 x 1 inches of pieces should do but if you can cut them into even smaller pieces that would better. When you’re done tearing and cutting the papers into bits soak them in a bowl filled with water.

Step 2: Soak the Teared Papers

As we tried not to use any special tools we let the papers soak in water for a day. If you’re looking for a quicker process you can blend the soaked papers after 2 or 3 hours of soaking. We used our hands to mix the soaked water and blend them as much as possible. Leave the soaked papers for another hour. 

Step 3: Prepare the Net and Get Started

We’re using a plastic netted sheet instead of the papermaking frame. Carefully, draw any one side of the net into the water, gradually from top to bottom.

Step 4: Allow Paper Mache to Cover the Net

Slowly flatten the net under the water and you’ll notice the paper mache gathering on the top of the net. Allow the paper mache to gather on the top of the net’s surface as evenly as possible. 

Step 5: Shape the Borders of Paper Mache

Bring the net straight out of the water without changing the flattened position. We used our fingertips to align the 4 sides of the paper mache as evenly as possible. In the case of the papermaking frame, you don’t need to worry about the border but since we’re using a plain net we had to make the border nice and straight.

Step 6: Place the Paper Mache Side on a Non-Sticky Surface

On a flat surface place a non-sticky material, we’re using a polythene sheet. Place the paper mache side of the netted sheet straight on the non-stick surface. Use a piece of cotton clothing to soak as much water as possible from the top surface of the netted sheet. 

Step 7: Carefully Take Off the Net

Once you’ve soaked enough water, carefully take out the net. The paper mache should remain flat on the no-stick surface in this step. 

Step 8: Allow the Flatten paper Mache to Dry

Allow the flattened paper mache to dry overnight or you could place it near a warm and dry place to dry it fast. 

Step 9: Check if the Paper has dried completely

Our recycled papers turned out so fresh and crisp and we absolutely enjoyed crafting them!

How to Use These Recycled Papers

As we did not use any specialized tools for the handmade papers, they turned out rather rustic. Our recycled paper may not be ideal for writing but it can be used for so many things, for example, our recycled papers can be used as gift tags, for scrapbooking, journaling, watercolor art projects, photography props, notes, and much more!

I have a TON of cardboard to get rid of, and it’d be awesome to turn it into paper that I could then potentially draw or paint on.

It would be possible as long as you can make a nice pulp paste from the material. The papers might turn out thicker than the ones I made. Hope it works!

Handmade Paper

Is it just me, or do others find birthday and holiday cards excessively expensive and packaged?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could transform recycled paper into handmade paper and create beautiful cards containing plantable seeds?

This handmade paper can make a creative and eco-friendly alternative to traditional greeting cards. After enjoying the heartfelt message, recipients can plant the card, and watch it grow into beautiful flowers or herbs.

Now, let’s get ready to create sustainable and meaningful greetings with handmade paper and plantable cards.

• Paper shredder  (Optional; You can also cut or tear the paper into small pieces)
• Blender or food processor
• Large bin  (I just took a drawer from my refrigerator)
• Paper making frames   (I bought them from Temu . They are $7.78 for 3. You can also find them on Amazon, or DIY them using wooden frames and fine mesh .)
• Recycled paper  (Scrap papers, flyers, packaging paper, used envelops, or old cards)
• Seeds  (Optional; You can use vegetable, fruit, or wildflower seeds)
• Food coloring  (Optional)

Instructions

1. Gather a box of  recycled paper  (see  note 1  for tips on  paper selection ). Shred, cut, or tear the paper into small pieces.

2. Place the paper pieces into  a large bin  and add enough warm water to submerge all the paper pieces. Soak the paper overnight.

3. Use a  blender  or food processor to blend the soaked paper into a pulp. You may need to blend them in batches. I blended each batch on high speed for 1 minute.

4. Fill a  large bin  ⅓ full with water. Add about  3 cups of the paper pulp  into the bin, stir to mix well. (The amount of pulp you add to the water will determine the thickness of the paper. You can experiment with the first few pieces of paper you make, and adjust the amount of pulp in the bin.) If desired, add  food coloring  to the mixture for a customized paper color.

5. Angle the frame at  45 degree s and insert it into the bottom of the container  from one edge . Once the frame is completely immersed, gently shake it from side to side to ensure the pulp on top of the screen distributes evenly. Gently lift the screen up, hold the frame over the bin to drain excess water.

6. Flip the frame  upside down  (with the paper side facing down) on top of a towel. You can use some old bath towels or kitchen towels. I used a cotton table runner folded into three layers for increased thickness, allowing it to absorb water from the paper sheet more efficiently.

7. Add  1 cup of the paper pulp  into the bin, stir to mix well. Repeat the earlier steps with another frame, allowing you to have two sheets of paper drying on the towel simultaneously.

8. Press a  microfiber towel  (I found it could absorb water better than a sponge) or a sponge on the top surface of the frames to absorb as much water as possible from the paper sheets. Wring out the towel or sponge as needed, and continue pressing until no more water can be absorbed from the paper sheets.

9. Gently lift up the frames. If the paper sheet breaks, you may have made it too thin or not pressed out enough water. Gather the teared paper sheet and dissolve it in the water bin to try again until you get a perfect paper sheet.

10. Sprinkle seeds over one sheet of paper, gently remove the other sheet of paper from the towel, and place it over the seeded paper, allowing them to overlap. Optionally, add dried flowers, herbs, or glitter on top for decoration. Position the frame on the overlapped paper sheets, and utilize a towel or sponge to press the two sheets of paper together.

11. Lift up the frame, and use your fingers to firmly press the edges of the paper sheets to ensure they adhere together. Carefully lift the paper sheet from the towel and stick it to a window with direct sunlight or near a heating vent.

12. Repeat the procedure with the remaining pulp. Allow the paper to dry on the window overnight until they are completely dry.

13. Gently remove the paper from the window. Fold them into halves for making birthday or holiday cards.

1. Selection of recycled paper

Certain types of paper are not suitable for making handmade paper due to their composition, which may contain materials that can affect the paper’s quality:

• Paper with a glossy or coated finish is not suitable for handmade paper because the coating prevents water absorption. This can interfere with the pulping process and result in a less porous and textured paper.
• Paper with dark colors can affect the color of the final handmade paper. Try to avoid using paper with strong dyes.
• Paper with metallic or foil coatings can be challenging to pulp. Additionally, these materials may not break down properly in the soil if used for plantable seed paper.
•  The plastic or wax layer prevents the paper fibers from separating and bonding effectively during pulping.
• Thermal paper, commonly used for receipts, has a coating that reacts to heat. The chemicals in this coating may not be suitable for pulping.
• Thick cardstock may not break down easily into pulp, making it difficult to create a smooth handmade paper. It’s generally better to use thinner paper for handmade paper projects.

2. How to plant seeded paper?

To plant a seeded cards, immerse it in cold water overnight, then tear the soaked paper into small pieces. Fill a pot with soil, lay the seeded paper on the soil surface, and cover it with a thin layer of soil. Ensure the soil stays consistently moist by thoroughly watering it during germination. Place the pot or garden bed in a sunny location, observe soil moisture levels, and patiently await signs of germination.

How to Make a Mould and Deckle

Before we dive into how to make handmade paper, let’s talk about a mould and deckle. While you can make homemade paper without a mould and deckle, I do like the ease and uniformity this paper-making combo adds to the process. And making one is surprisingly easy, too!

You’ll need the following supplies:

• 2 Wooden Frames – Both frames need to be the same size with everything removed. Picture frames are the most common thing to use when making a mould and deckle. However, I didn’t have two frames of the same size when I made mine, so I used the frames from some canvases I picked up from Dollar Tree.  
• Window Screening

Cut the window screening so that it is slightly larger than your frame. 

Lay the screen material over one of your frames and staple all the way around. Make sure the screen is nice and taut by stapling in the center of each of the four sides first. Then, continue adding staples around the frame, alternating sides and adjusting the screen as needed to keep it taut. 

Trim off any excess screen.

What You Need to Make Homemade Paper

• Scrap Paper – Most types of paper work well for recycled paper making. The type(s) of paper you use for this project will determine the texture and color of your final product. 
• Blender – I recommend picking up an inexpensive, used blender for this project. Once you use it to blend up your paper scraps, you won’t want to use it for food prep again. I keep an old blender/food processor combo unit around specifically for DIY projects like this one as well as for my homemade laundry soap. An immersion blender gets the job done as well. (Find a blender-free method in the FAQs section.)
• Large Container/Tub – I like to use a plastic storage bin because that’s what I have handy. 
• Mould & Deckle – A mould and deckle is pretty easy to make and is a great way to give new purpose to some old picture frames. You can also purchase a ready-made mould and deckle . A splatter guard is also a great paper-making tool. (Or check out the FAQs section for a screen-free method of paper-making.)
• Dish Towels/Cotton Material – You’ll need some type of material to transfer your paper to after removing it from the mould and deckle. Dish towels, old cotton t-shirts and cut-up bed sheets all work well. I use reusable shop towels that I purchased by mistake during a late-night Amazon shopping session. 😉

How to Make Homemade Paper

Begin by cutting or tearing your scrap paper into small pieces. I like to send my paper of choice through my shredder for quick and easy results. 

Then soften the paper by soaking in water for at least 2-3 hours. I generally soak mine overnight or sometimes even for a couple of days if I’m forced to do a lot of adulting instead of DIYing. 😉 

Next, add some of your softened paper to your blender and cover completely with water. Pulse until a fine slurry is achieved. 

Be careful not to overdo it for this step. I generally fill my blender about a quarter of the way up with water-soaked paper and then add enough water to reach just under the halfway mark. It’s better to work in batches versus burning up your blender by overfilling. 

Fill your tub or container of choice with a few inches of water. Add some of your paper slurry to the water and mix gently to evenly distribute. 

Then submerge your mould and deckle into the tub and slowly raise it back out making sure to keep the mould and deckle level. 

Remove the deckle from the mould. In a smooth, swift motion, place the mould face down on a hand towel or similar material. 

Fun Fact: The process of transferring the newly formed paper from the mould is called couching (pronounced ‘coo-ching’). 

Press your sponge against the back of your mould to soak up some of the excess water, squeezing out your sponge as needed. Carefully remove the mould and transfer your towel or fabric with your formed paper to a safe area to dry. I let mine air dry by hanging them up with clothespins. 

Once the paper has fully dried, slowly peel it off the towel or fabric it dried on. 

And, voila! You’ve made your very own handmade paper!

• Homemade paper is characteristically wavy and textured with irregular edges. If you want your paper to lay a little flatter, try keeping them in a flower press for a few days. For cleaner sheets, try trimming the edges.
• Resist the urge to send your slurry water down the drain. It could lead to clogged pipes. If you stick with all-natural embellishments, you can add the leftover water to your garden or compost pile. 
• Your slurry/water ratio will dictate the thickness of your paper. Little on the thick side? Add less slurry to your water tub. Too thin? Add more.

What types of paper can i use to make homemade paper.

You can use most types of paper for recycled paper making. However, glossy and coated products such as magazines, wrapping paper and cereal boxes should be avoided. Some good options for homemade paper are:

The type(s) of scrap paper you use will affect your final product’s overall color, texture and thickness, so try experimenting with different types and combinations to achieve your ideal handmade paper.

I love using handmade paper as stationary and in my homemade journals. Consider also using your recycled paper as invitations and greeting cards, gift tags, bookmarks, table setting place cards, custom art and scrapbooking.

Can I Write On My Handmade Paper?

Yes! You can write, color, print and paint on handmade paper. 

Due to the textured and fibrous nature of handmade paper, I find that gel pens, ballpoint pens and extra fine Sharpies work best for writing. Fountain pens are not a great option for homemade paper. 

However, you can use pencils, colored pencils and even crayons as well. 

I also find handmade paper uniquely well-suited for painting with both acrylic and watercolor paints. Stamping is a good option as well. 

I’ve had mixed results with markers. Handmade paper is porous, so bleeding sometimes occurs when writing with markers. 

Can I Make Homemade Paper without a Blender?

Yup, you can! If you don’t have a blender handy (or don’t want to use your blender for paper making), you can still make some absolutely stunning homemade paper. 

Make sure to cut your scrap paper into very small pieces (a paper shredder that crosscuts is a wonderful tool for this!). Allow your cut-up paper to soak in water for several days so that it gets fully saturated and starts to disintegrate. 

Transfer your softened paper to another container and pound it using a potato masher, meat tenderizer or hammer to break your paper down as much as possible. You can also add your softened paper to a container with a lid and shake it aggressively until it breaks down sufficiently for you. 

Then you can proceed with the paper-making process as usual.

Can I Make Handmade Paper without a Screen?

You sure can! 

To make paper without a mould and deckle or any kind of screen, just lay out a piece of fabric on a high-rimmed baking sheet and add your pulp on top of the fabric. 

Then move and manipulate the pulp until you achieve your desired size and shape.

Lay another piece of fabric on top of your shaped paper and gently press with a sponge to remove as much excess water as possible. 

While it’s still sandwiched between the two pieces of fabric, flip your paper sheet onto a fresh, dry piece of fabric. The piece of fabric that was on the bottom should now be on the top. 

Remove that piece of fabric. Then flip over again and remove the second piece of fabric. 

Allow the paper to rest and fully dry on the third piece of fabric. 

Paper made without a screen is even more irregular and rustic than homemade paper made with a mould and deckle. But its homespun appearance and texture give it a fun vintage charm! 

If you’re looking for a bit more uniformity with paper made with this method, try gently flattening your paper with a rolling pin before removing the fabric from your paper sheet.

This Handmade Paper from Recycled Paper – Simple Guide will let you create a beautiful craft paper that you can use in multiple ways. It is a beautiful Eco-friendly project to make with your kids.

I have loved making crafts with my daughter since she was little. Now that she is a teen, spending time together creating art is priceless.

I have always put my used/old paper in the recycling bin. But this year, I wanted to make something different. So we decided to gather as much used paper as possible at home to create some Eco-friendly crafts this summer. This was a great way to reuse papers.

Another thing that we wanted to accomplish with this project was to use as many natural or homemade elements as possible, from the coloring to the glue.

I have to say this was an adventure that we really enjoyed.

What materials do I need to make Homemade Paper

How to make your Handmade paper from recycled paper

With this project, it’s a little challenging to get the exact measurement of the material used, so I will include what I used to make this craft.

Gather your used paper and cut it into small pieces. The smaller the pieces of paper are cut, the easier for the blender to work properly. Add two cups of cut paper into a big bowl. Add 4 cups of water and let it soak for 24 hours. This will make it soft.

Separate the paper into batches. Add the paper mix into the blender and pour enough water for the blender to run smoothly. Add the color and mix well.

Fill a large container halfway with water. It should be big enough to place the frame inside. The mesh on the frame should be on the bottom side. Place the frame into the water and add a few spoons of the paper mix. Spread the paper on the frame. The water will help to have a smooth and even paper.

Pull the frame out of the water and press the paper carefully to get the excess water out. Let the water drain as much as possible.

Carefully pull the paper out of the frame onto the absorbent cloth.

Let the paper dry completely before using it.

Useful Tips

• Do not use glossy or laminated paper, only use opaque paper.
• We used Turmeric for yellow and water from boiled beets for red or purple color for color.
• Cut the paper in small pieces as possible; bigger pieces can get stuck in the blender.
• Colors will fade a little bit after drying.
• I made my own glue with flour and water. It takes a little longer to dry but works great!
• With this mix, I made sixteen 6 x 4-inch handmade paper.

We used natural flowers and leaves to decorate the following handmade paper projects. You can use the press flower method to enjoy your flowers and leaves longer. Here is a way you can make your own Flower Press at home.

• Glass Jar (I reuse a glass container)
• Ribbons or jute (optional)

How to make the Pencil Holder

• Add glue to the paper. I made my own glue using flour and water, but you can use multipurpose glue.
• Glue paper into the jar. I add a couple of rubber bands to keep the paper in its shape while it dries. Decorate your pencil holder with natural findings such as flowers, leaves, and twigs.

• Cardstock paper

How to make bookmarks with handmade paper

• Cut the handmade paper with a ruler. Then, cut cardstock paper. I use the ruler width to create my bookmarks.
• Glue both papers together and let them dry. Open a hole on the top with a hole punch. Decorate your bookmark with natural findings such as flowers, leaves, and twigs.

I really love this project; there are so many things that we can do using these craft papers! I can see myself making our Christmas cards this year. It is a touch of personalization by making the cards ourselves, saving money because I don’t need to buy them, and reusing paper to contribute to our planet with less waste.
