71+ Research Paper Topics & Ideas for Marketing Students

marketing research thesis titles

As a marketing student, you probably have access to a plethora of resources such as your college library and of course, the internet, to come up with great research paper topics.

However, the thought of writing your research paper can be daunting, especially if you’re still brainstorming and don’t know what to write about.

Just like any other piece of writing, start by keeping your audience in mind. Then, make a list of research paper topics that are more relevant to your interests, or a new under-developed field (for example; augmented reality, or people sentiments towards Artificial Intelligence), or a unique research topic that intrigues your audience.

But if you’re still struggling to pin down one out of the many research paper topics for your program, we’ll suggest a number of them for you to either choose from; or for you to take inspiration from and come up with your own.

Table of Contents

How to Choose the Best Research Paper Topics

Before we dive into the details, you’ll have to familiarize yourself with the basics. For starters, pick up a pen and paper and brainstorm different topics that you’d like to write about.

While personal interest is definitely important, we also suggest you opt for a topic that will intrigue your readers.  Here are a couple of factors you ought to keep in mind while selecting a topic:

Keeping your personal interest in mind

You probably won’t be able to write a stellar research paper if you’re not interested in the topic. Sit down with your peers and advisors to discuss possible ideas. It will be easier for you to discuss different themes once you’ve written down all your ideas in one place. If you’ve decided on a specific keyword for instance “consumer behaviour”, you can look for similar research papers on the internet.

A research paper isn’t a descriptive essay which you can drag aimlessly. Your research paper needs to be based on factual data and that’s only possible if you’ve conducted thorough research. While jotting down points for your first draft, ensure your statements are supported with references or examples citing credible academicals and research work.

Don’t leave it till the last day

A lot of students tend to undermine the writing process and leave for the last few days. Bear in mind that you can’t possibly write your entire research paper overnight. In order to succeed, you’ll have to devote sufficient amount of time to research.

Also, be prepared to schedule meetings with your advisor on a regular basis as you’re bound to require help along the way. At this point, make sure you only rely on credible sources that will support your dissertation.

Examples & List of Research Paper Topics

If you’re still unable to decide a topic of your interest, here is a list of 70 unique marketing research topics that you can use as marketing project topics for your MBA, or any other marketing course:

We've broken it down into digestible sections, so you can dive straight into your area of interest or academic level. Go ahead, check out these marketing research topics for papers and dissertations to make your next project shine!

What Are Marketing Research Topics?

In its simplest form, marketing is all about telling a compelling story to your audience. It's how businesses communicate the value of their products or services to customers, intending to promote and sell them. Yet, it's not just about selling. Marketing also involves understanding customer needs, crafting solutions to meet these needs, and building relationships that result in customer loyalty.

Now, when it comes to marketing research topics, you'll find an expansive universe of possibilities, each as diverse as the next. You might explore how to position your product to maximize impact or delve into the powerful online strategies that can make your brand viral. Or, you could examine the psychology behind consumer behavior, understanding what drives people to buy one product over another.

These are just a handful of the abundant marketing topics you can encounter. Now let’s see what branches they are divided into.

Branches of Marketing Topics

Before you choose any marketing research topic idea, let’s figure out the main branches of this field. Here are the buckets they fall into:

  • Strategic marketing: This is the art of planning with a long-term view. Topics here could cover competitive positioning, market segmentation, or establishing a unique selling proposition.
  • Digital marketing: This direction is all about reaching customers online. You might explore search engine optimization, email marketing campaigns, or the effectiveness of different digital advertising strategies.
  • Social media marketing: This branch leverages social platforms to engage customers. Marketing topics here could revolve around the role of influencers, the power of user-generated content, or the impact of social media on brand perception.
  • Content marketing: This revolves around creating valuable content for customers. Here, you could delve into the importance of storytelling, how to create compelling blog posts, or the effectiveness of video marketing.
  • Consumer behavior: This branch focuses on understanding what drives consumers. You might examine factors influencing buying decisions, the psychology of consumer choice, or trends in consumer behavior.

How to Choose a Marketing Research Topic?

Choosing the right marketing research paper topic is crucial for a couple of reasons. Firstly, a good topic can keep you motivated throughout your study. It can be the difference between seeing your research as a chore or an adventure. Secondly, a well-chosen topic can contribute to the field, spark discussions, or even influence marketing strategies.

So, what makes a marketing research topic good? Most importantly, it should be an area of interest that excites you and piques your curiosity. Researching something you don't care about won't bring out your best work. Also, make sure the topic is relevant – check if it fits into the current research landscape or challenges existing knowledge. Last but not least, ask yourself if the topic is manageable within the scope of your assignment and resources.

With these criteria in mind, let's see how to select the right marketing research topic. Below are some valuable suggestions from our thesis writing service :

  • Begin research Get familiar with the field by reading up on the latest publications and material. Note down all ideas for later reference.
  • Identify your interest area Start by asking yourself what aspect of marketing excites you most. Is it the psychology of consumer behavior, the analytics of digital marketing, or the creative aspects of content marketing?
  • Examine current trends Stay updated with the latest developments in the marketing field. Read industry reports, blogs, or news to identify hot topics or emerging trends.
  • Find a gap Look for questions that haven't been sufficiently answered or areas that need more exploration. This could be a unique perspective on an existing topic or an entirely new question.
  • Consider practicality Make sure your topic is feasible to research. Do you have access to the necessary resources, data, or tools?

Remember, choosing the right topic is a journey, one that requires time, exploration, and sometimes, a bit of trial and error. Don't rush it, savor the process, and you'll end up with a great topic. But in case you are stuck, we developed a list of potential research topics in marketing – all worth attention.

What is Marketing in Business Management?

Marketing aims to promote goods and services and increase sales for your business by creating, sharing, and planning. Moreover, marketing studies the relationship between products, brands, and services and human behaviour. These elements define a company’s value and measure its growth. You need a well-crafted marketing strategy to increase brand recognition, attract more customers, and drive sales.

To achieve result-driven marketing, marketers must thoroughly understand client requirements, the competitive environment, and how those factors impact business success. Having that said, looking for the perfect MBA marketing dissertation topics? We will help you with that. First, we will walk you through possible types of marketing for your dissertation topic.

Marketing Research Areas For Your Dissertation

There are many types of marketing, as you may have guessed, so choosing an appropriate MBA marketing dissertation topic can be a little overwhelming. The following are the most notable types of marketing you could base your thesis title on:

Advertising

Marketing in this form is the most common. It involves paying advertisers to place different kinds of ads in newspapers, television programs, billboards, and other posters.

Public Relations

Advertisers use this form of advertising to promote their brands without buying advertising space. Your business can raise awareness by sponsoring events or writing articles for the media.

Direct Marketing

Sending direct marketing messages to potential customers by postal mail or email is one method of direct marketing. Thus, it is similar to direct response advertising without paid media such as print or television.

Sales Promotion

Sales promotion refers to any activity designed to increase sales at a specific point in time rather than across the year. Businesses offer various types of sales contests and discounts during specific periods (such as Black Friday and the Christmas holiday season).

Short-term sales are always the goal rather than building long-term brand awareness through customer loyalty. The most common form of sales promotion is coupons, but other forms include free samples and rebates.

Product Marketing

An essential aspect of any business is product marketing. Creating a connection between your brand and consumers is the role of product marketing specialists. By understanding how consumers perceive your product or service category, they can help you position yourself against your competition more accurately.

Thesis Title: Examples and Suggestions from a PhD Grad

Graphic of a researcher writing, perhaps a thesis title

When you’re faced with writing up a thesis, choosing a title can often fall to the bottom of the priority list. After all, it’s only a few words. How hard can it be?!

In the grand scheme of things I agree that picking your thesis title shouldn’t warrant that much thought, however my own choice is one of the few regrets I have from my PhD . I therefore think there is value in spending some time considering the options available.

In this post I’ll guide you through how to write your own thesis title and share real-world examples. Although my focus is on the PhD thesis, I’ve also included plenty of thesis title examples for bachelor’s and master’s research projects too.

Hopefully by the end of the post you’ll feel ready to start crafting your own!

Why your thesis title is at least somewhat important

It sounds obvious but your thesis title is the first, and often only, interaction people will have with your thesis. For instance, hiring managers for jobs that you may wish to apply for in the future. Therefore you want to give a good sense of what your research involved from the title.

Many people will list the title of their thesis on their CV, at least for a while after graduating. All of the example titles I’ve shared below came from my repository of academic CVs . I’d say roughly 30% of all the academics on that page list their thesis title, which includes academics all the way up to full professor.

Your thesis title could therefore feature on your CV for your whole career, so it is probably worth a bit of thought!

My suggestions for choosing a good thesis title

  • Make it descriptive of the research so it’s immediately obvious what it is about! Most universities will publish student theses online ( here’s mine! ) and they’re indexed so can be found via Google Scholar etc. Therefore give your thesis a descriptive title so that interested researchers can find it in the future.
  • Don’t get lost in the detail . You want a descriptive title but avoid overly lengthy descriptions of experiments. Unless a certain analytical technique etc was central to your research, I’d suggest by default* to avoid having it in your title. Including certain techniques will make your title, and therefore research, look overly dated, which isn’t ideal for potential job applications after you graduate.
  • The title should tie together the chapters of your thesis. A well-phrased title can do a good job of summarising the overall story of your thesis. Think about each of your research chapters and ensure that the title makes sense for each of them.
  • Be strategic . Certain parts of your work you want to emphasise? Consider making them more prominent in your title. For instance, if you know you want to pivot to a slightly different research area or career path after your PhD, there may be alternative phrasings which describe your work just as well but could be better understood by those in the field you’re moving into. I utilised this a bit in my own title which we’ll come onto shortly.
  • Do your own thing. Having just laid out some suggestions, do make sure you’re personally happy with the title. You get a lot of freedom to choose your title, so use it however you fancy. For example, I’ve known people to use puns in their title, so if that’s what you’re into don’t feel overly constrained.

*This doesn’t always hold true and certainly don’t take my advice if 1) listing something in your title could be a strategic move 2) you love the technique so much that you’re desperate to include it!

Why I regret my own choice of PhD thesis title

I should say from the outset that I assembled my thesis in quite a short space of time compared to most people. So I didn’t really spend particularly long on any one section, including the title.

However, my main supervisor even spelled out for me that once the title was submitted to the university it would be permanent. In other words: think wisely about your title.

What I started with

Initially I drafted the title as something like: Three dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration . Which I thought was nice, catchy and descriptive.

I decided to go for “correlative imaging” because, not only did it describe the experiments well, but it also sounded kind of technical and fitting of a potential pivot into AI. I’m pleased with that bit of the title.

What I ended up with

Before submitting the title to the university (required ahead of the viva), I asked my supervisors for their thoughts.

One of my well intentioned supervisors suggested that, given that my project didn’t involve verifying regenerative quality, I probably shouldn’t state cartilage regeneration . Instead, they suggested, I should state what I was experimenting on (the materials) rather than the overall goal of the research (aid cartilage regeneration efforts).

With this advice I dialled back my choice of wording and the thesis title I went with was:

Three dimensional correlative imaging for measurement of strain in cartilage and cartilage replacement materials

Reading it back now I’m reminder about how less I like it than my initial idea!

I put up basically no resistance to the supervisor’s choice, even though the title sounds so much more boring in my opinion. I just didn’t think much of it at the time. Furthermore, most of my PhD was actually in a technique which is four dimensional (looking at a series of 3D scans over time, hence 4D) which would have sounded way more sciency and fitting of a PhD.

What I wish I’d gone with

If I had the choice again, I’d have gone with:

Four-dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration

Which, would you believe it, is exactly what it states on my CV…

Does the thesis title really matter?

In all honesty, your choice of thesis title isn’t that important. If you come to regret it, as I do, it’s not the end of the world. There are much more important things in life to worry about.

If you decide at a later stage that you don’t like it you can always describe it in a way that you prefer. For instance, in my CV I describe my PhD as I’d have liked the title to be. I make no claim that it’s actually the title so consider it a bit of creative license.

Given that as your career progresses you may not even refer back to your thesis much, it’s really not worth stressing over. However, if you’re yet to finalise your thesis title I do still think it is worth a bit of thought and hopefully this article has provided some insights into how to choose a good thesis title.

My advice for developing a thesis title

  • Draft the title early. Drafting it early can help give clarity for the overall message of your research. For instance, while you’re assembling the rest of your thesis you can check that the title encompasses the research chapters you’re included, and likewise that the research experiments you’re including fall within what the title describes. Drafting it early also gives more time you to think it over. As with everything: having a first draft is really important to iterate on.
  • Look at some example titles . Such as those featured above!
  • If you’re not sure about your title, ask a few other people what they think . But remember that you have the final say!

I hope this post has been useful for those of you are finalising your thesis and need to decide on a thesis title. If you’ve enjoyed this article and would like to hear about future content (and gain access to my free resource library!) you can subscribe for free here:

Journal of Social Marketing

ISSN : 2042-6763

Article publication date: 11 September 2017

Issue publication date: 2 January 2018

Limited attention has been given to the study of social marketing at the graduate level. Such a study not only reveals research interests and trends, but also provides insights into the level of academic evolution or maturity of the social marketing field. This paper aims to examine social marketing as the subject of master’s theses.

Design/methodology/approach

A search strategy found 266 social marketing-focused master’s theses completed from 1971 to 2015. These theses were analysed by host countries, institutions, disciplinary contexts and degree programmes for which they were submitted.

Only four theses were submitted from 1971-1980 and eight completed in 1981-1990. The number of theses increased to 35 in 1991-2000, 118 between 2001 and 2010 and 101 in the past five years (2011-2015). The USA was the leading producer of social marketing master’s theses, followed by Canada, Sweden, China, South Africa, the UK and Kenya. A majority of theses were housed in the disciplines of business, health and communication, and none of them was submitted for a Master of Social Marketing degree.

Originality/value

This is the first study that investigates master’s theses with an exclusive focus on social marketing. Implications for the evolution, learning and teaching of social marketing are provided.

USM Honors College Students Present Thesis Research at Marketing Conference

Tue, 03/26/2024 - 09:14am | By: Van Arnold

Marketing Theory and Practice Conference

University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Honors College students Haeden Overby and Patrick Tyson presented their thesis research during the 2024 Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Conference (AMTP) held earlier this month in Hilton Head, S.C.

Overby, a hospitality and tourism management major, and Tyson, an anthropology, sociology, and Spanish major, presented individual research papers, as well as a collaborative project, at the international and interdisciplinary academic marketing conference which brings together academic theory and real-world marketing practices.

This year’s conference saw more than 100 submissions. Of the 33 student paper submissions across undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels, Overby’s thesis paper – “Service robots’ effect on branding and consumers' intentions through online reviews” - won the James E. Randall Best Student Paper Award.

“Haeden and Patrick are exceptional students in my class. Their passion for research and dedication to their thesis projects have impressed me,” said Dr. Wei Wang, Associate Professor, Hospitality and Tourism Management Program Coordinator who served as both students’ thesis advisor. “Moreover, their active involvement and leadership roles on campus exemplify their commitment to excellence beyond academics,”

Tyson presented a research paper titled, “Uncertainty avoidance moderation over film-motivated tourists' views on destination image, place attachment, and intentions.”

Collaboratively, they presented a paper titled, “Cookies and calamari: Squid Game’s “Dalgona” and cutting shapes from its impact on Korean product purchase and travel intentions.”

“My advisors, Dr. Wei Wang and Dr. Banu Bas, have been incredibly patient teaching me about the research process, and I would not have been able to succeed without their support,” said Overby. “Dr. Randall is retiring from the AMTP conference this year, and the award was named after him for the first time. I am pleased to be the first recipient of the award under his name and am incredibly thankful I had the chance to meet him when I was presented the award.”

Added Overby, “This accomplishment has become great motivation to continue my research in marketing and to cross the finish line of submitting my thesis. I am glad to bring home a new award for Southern Miss Business!"

Unlocking insights into marketing to mature consumers: A new research synthesis

by Queen Mary, University of London

old customer

Research from Queen Mary University of London academic Dr. Mina Tajvidi, delves into marketing communications targeted at mature consumers aged 50 and above, addressing definitional inconsistencies and reviewing research published since 1972.

In an era marked by the increasing significance of an aging population, understanding and effectively targeting mature consumers has become paramount for marketers worldwide. A research paper titled "What we do know and don't know about marketing communications on mature consumers" sheds light on this crucial demographic, resolving long-standing definitional inconsistencies and providing a roadmap for future research and practice in marketing communications.

Authored by a team of esteemed scholars, this paper offers a comprehensive synthesis of existing research on marketing to mature consumers, encompassing individuals aged 50 and above. Drawing from a meticulous analysis of 106 papers published in premier marketing journals since 1972, the study identifies key themes and unveils critical insights into this demographic.

The findings of the paper underscore three primary research themes: the segmentation of mature consumers, their attitudes and behaviors, and effective marketing strategies tailored to this demographic. Furthermore, the research outlines a series of compelling future research directions, urging scholars and practitioners to delve deeper into understanding the complexities of mature consumer behavior and preferences.

One of the standout contributions of this paper is its proposal for an expanded definition of mature consumers, transcending mere chronological age to encompass biological, psychological, and social dimensions, as well as life events and circumstances. This holistic approach promises to revolutionize how marketers conceptualize and engage with this diverse demographic.

From a practical standpoint, the research emphasizes the importance of personalized marketing approaches for mature consumers, recognizing their unique information processing mechanisms and the varying impact of marketing mix elements on their behavior. It advocates for the adoption of alternative methodologies to fully capture the nuances of this market segment.

Co-author of the paper , Tajvidi, codirector of MSc Marketing program, said, "Our research underscores the pressing need for marketers to move beyond simplistic age-based stereotypes and embrace a more nuanced understanding of mature consumers.

"By doing so, businesses can unlock untapped opportunities and forge deeper connections with this increasingly influential demographic. As businesses navigate the evolving landscape of marketing communications, this research serves as a beacon, illuminating the path forward towards more effective and inclusive strategies for engaging mature consumers."

The findings are published in the European Journal of Marketing .

$3M Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to fund gun violence research

Multidisciplinary brown & black collective will focus on marginalized communities most affected by gun violence.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded UC Davis Health a three-year, $3 million grant. The prestigious award will fund research into the causes, complexities, and potential solutions to gun violence in disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities.

The grant will support studies conducted by the Black & Brown Collective, a multidisciplinary network of several institutions co-founded by Shani Buggs . Buggs is the principal investigator for the award. She is a health and public policy scholar in the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine .

“This award allows UC Davis to continue our efforts to reverse the negative impacts of racism and violence on disproportionately impacted communities of color,” said UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May . “The project allows us to build diversity, support the success of scholars from racially and ethnically marginalized backgrounds and develop programs to support the overall health equity and well-being of our national population,” May said.

Gun violence is a public health crisis in the U.S.

Gun violence is increasingly recognized as a significant public health crisis in the United States, where it is the leading cause of premature death. Although no communities are spared, gun violence has significantly and negatively impacted predominantly Black and Brown communities for decades.

The grant will support research projects by racially and ethnically marginalized community violence prevention scholars. This group has been underrepresented and under-resourced in research funding, scholarly discourse and policy creation.

“Research is stronger and more beneficial to the communities it serves when it is conducted and disseminated by a diverse collective of cross-disciplinary researchers and community partners,” Buggs said. “This helps ensure that research processes and methodologies are valid, culturally appropriate, and inclusive of the historical and cultural contexts essential to understanding and redressing inequities and power dynamics.”

Supporting the next generation of scholars

The Black & Brown Collective will also work to support the emerging generation of racially and ethnically underrepresented violence prevention scholars, engaging them in networks with collective members and elevating their roles as thought leaders. The collective will focus on four key activities over the next three years:

  • Create an equitable framework and training materials for community violence prevention research
  • Develop a network and pipeline of scholars from racially and ethnically marginalized backgrounds
  • Deliver grants related to equitable community violence research
  • Provide research support and mentorship for selected scholars

Joseph Richardson, Jr . is a co-leader of the three-year award. He is the MPower Professor of African-American Studies, Medical Anthropology and Epidemiology at the University of Maryland. Richardson is also a recent inductee into the National Academy of Medicine for his career as a gun violence researcher.

“The Black & Brown Collective is both necessary and timely in addressing the historic marginalization of gun violence researchers of color, and the translation of innovative research into transformative culturally responsive interventions and policies to reduce harm in communities most impacted by violence, both structural and interpersonal,” Richardson said.

Richardson is also the principal investigator for the evaluation of community violence intervention (CVI) street outreach programs in Washington, D.C. In addition, he is the founding co-director of PROGRESS , a gun violence research initiative that focuses on gun violence reduction in and around the District of Columbia.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is the largest philanthropic organization in the U.S. focused solely on health. The grant to UC Davis aligns with the foundation’s goal to build a national Culture of Health that will enable longer, healthier lives for every individual, now and for generations to come.

The UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP) is a multi-disciplinary program of research and policy development focused on the causes, consequences and prevention of violence. Studies assess firearm violence, the social conditions that underlie violence, and the connections between violence, substance abuse and mental illness. VPRP is home to the University of California Firearm Violence Research Center, which launched in 2017 with a $5 million appropriation from the state of California to conduct leading-edge research on firearm violence and its prevention.
