Taoiseach announces ‘No Homework Day’, but there’s a catch

Sarah McKenna Barry

international no homework day ireland

Children are encouraged to do one kind deed instead.

An Taoiseach Micheál Martin has declared today, Thursday 24 March, to be a “No Homework Day” for the children of Ireland.

In an address from Washington, the Fianna Fáil leader said that Ireland would mark National Confidence Day by rewarding its children with an afternoon off, and encouraged them to do “one kind deed” instead.

He told children to “believe” in themselves and their abilities.

Martin said:

“There is so much more we can all achieve if we believe in ourselves more and I’m asking you to believe in yourself today and every day.

“I’ve been speaking to your teachers, and they’re happy to let you off your homework for one day.”

“All you have to do is one kind deed instead of your homework.

“That could be looking out for a friend, looking after someone in your family. It’s up to you. You choose. So please enjoy.”

Children across schools in Ireland will be shown a video entitled ‘I Believe in Me’ by Starcamp to mark the occasion and to encourage confidence in children.

The show will include contributions from Rory O’Connor (Rory’s Stories), Colette Fitzpatrick, Will Sliney and Keith Barry.

Aideen O’Grady, director of Starcamp, said:

“This show was created for children who have had a harrowing two years, we want to give children confidence and self-esteem building tips that will stay with them for life.”

Ahead of the show, Rory O’Connor addressed the children of Ireland, saying:

“You should never compare yourself to anyone else, the sun and the moonrise at different times but both are equally important.”

The decision to create the show to mark National Confidence Day came after Starcamp carried out a survey which found that 50% of Irish parents found that their children became less sociable following the pandemic, while 43% reported feeling new concerns and anxieties.

National No Homework Day on April 12th

National No Homework Day

An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin has officially declared Monday 12th April as the first official “No Homework Day” for every child in Ireland. In his most pressing interview to date, when questioned by 9 year old Dean Aherne about the abolition of homework, Micheál Martin stated exclusively that for the first time ever, “On April 12th there’ll be no homework, and that’s for the whole country”, which was met by cheers from the Starcamp kids. Teachers, principals, parents – take note!

This brings to the fore the debate about whether or not it’s time to say goodbye to homework as we know it. Covid-19 has brought about a lot of change in society and Starcamp owner, Aideen O Grady, who has been working with children and running camps and classes nationwide for 15 years as well as being a Mother of 4, strongly believes it’s time to progress from the unchanged, archaic style homework that goes unquestioned and put children’s mental health first by having more free time to encourage other equally important life skills and hobbies.

Finland’s education system is being perceived as the best in the world. Coincidently, they also give less homework that any other country. They are leading the way because of common-sense practices and a holistic teaching environment that strives for equity over excellence. Students start school when they are seven years old and get little to no homework throughout their school years, with the education system preferring to include the academic work as part of the school day and allowing home time to be free and enjoyed. This time instead allows children to engage in their passions, to try new hobbies, socialize freely with other children, fall down, get up, scrape knees, play music, sport, communicate more with the outside world and so much more. They see the benefits of free reign in the developing childhood years to not be chained to compulsory education. It’s simply just a way to let a kid be a kid.

From a psychological standpoint, it has endless pros. Although it may anecdotal, many students really feel like they’re stuck in a prison. Finland alleviates this forced ideal and instead opts to prepare its children for the real world. Finnish students are getting everything they need to get done in school without the added pressures that come with excelling at a subject and coming home to face more book time from as young as 4 or 5 in Ireland. Once they get home, they no longer need to worry about further study and tests, but instead are able to focus on the true task at hand – learning and growing as a human being.

There will be more diversity in these children once they become adults if they have more time to find out who they really are and what they truly love. They won’t be subjected to unnecessary pressure and stress from such a young age, something that should not be in their little lives and is a hard habit to drop once developed.

This is an ideal time to redefine our system and abolish homework as we know it. There are other ways for us to achieve the same results and for parents to be more involved holistically in their children’s education and upbringing. It just should not take up the majority of our children’s free time. Children’s mental health needs to be at the fore right now, not tomorrow. We need to act. Many teachers have spoken about the newfound anxieties that are showing themselves in classrooms from a very young age. Sadly for our children this is only going one way.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has given children in Ireland a no homework day on Thursday.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has sent a special message from Washington to the children of Ireland for National Confidence Day giving students a no homework day.

To mark National Confidence Day on Thursday Mr Martin, who is still in isolation in Washington, asked children to “believe in yourself and your abilities” and thanked them for all their hard work.

“There is so much more we can all achieve if we believe in ourselves more and I’m asking you to believe in yourself today and every day.

“I’ve been speaking to your teachers, and they’re happy to let you off your homework for one day.

All you have to do is one kind deed instead of your homework. That could be looking out for a friend, looking after someone in your family, it’s up to you, you choose. So please enjoy.

Others to take part in a special show created by Starcamp entitled I Believe in Me and which will be shown in classrooms on Thursday, were Rory’s Stories, Colette Fitzpatrick, Will Sliney and Keith Barry.

Rory O' Connor, AKA Rory's Stories said: "You should never compare yourself to anyone else, the sun and the moonrise at different times but both are equally important.”

Handout screengrab from video issued by The White House of the bilateral meeting between Taoiseach Micheal Martin and US President Joe Biden via videolink.

The show was created on the back of a survey carried out by Starcamp which showed that almost 50% of parents feel that their children have become less sociable since the introduction of restrictions and 43% have been experiencing new anxieties, fears or worries.

The one-off show, 500,000 children are expected to tune into, consists of uplifting song, dance, games, magic and art along with some inspiring interviews and chats.

Director of Starcamp, Aideen O’ Grady, said: “This show was created for children who have had a harrowing two years, we want to give children confidence and self-esteem building tips that will stay with them for life.”

In some much needed good news for children around the country in what has been a year filled with restrictions and new rules, the Education minister has announced a no homework day for Irish children.

Education minister Norma Foley will issue the golden ticket on RTÉ’s After School Hub this week.

RTE confirmed today that this Friday’s After School Hub on RTÉ will see Education Minister Norma Foley issue a no homework pass to the children of Ireland, meaning that they can skip their homework for a day, without getting in trouble!

On the show, which coincides with UNICEF's World Children's Day, she is interviewed by After School Hub’s Seamus the Dog and tells him: "It’s a golden ticket and this is how it’s going to work. All the students I know have been really good and have been working very hard since they went back to school.

"Their teacher will decide what day the children can use it some day between now and Christmas . The children and young people of Ireland have been just fantastic. We’ve very very proud of them and this is a thank you."

Also on the piece, airing on After School Hub this Friday at 3.20pm on RTÉ2, Norma Foley invites primary school children to send pictures to the Department of Education so that she can hang them on the easel in her office. Everyone who sends in a picture will receive a certificate.

Fronted by Múinteoirí Ray, John, Cliona and Emer, After School Hub has been keeping children entertained each day with a huge range of activities, including sport, drama, arts, science, and cooking.

Highlights in the series so far have included dance classes with Karen from Dancing with the Stars, exciting experiments with Phil of Science, space visits with Niamh Shaw, virtual school tours around Ireland and the world, visits to Dublin Zoo, art classes with Chris Judge and stand-up comedy tips from funnyman Jason Byrne.

The Homework pass is available for download at RTE.ie/learn from Friday afternoon.

As a kid or a parent, everyone can recall the joy of a no homework Friday – the freedom, the brain space, and the endless possibilities the evening brought. Now, the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins wants every day to be a no homework Friday.

As a parent, you may have regular battles with your children about completing their homework, and having been there, and done that yourself, sometimes you can actually relate to the feeling of dread when a pile of work is on the agenda for the evening in each and every subject.

Your child (or once upon a time, yourself) may advocate for no homework and label it as “unfair” and the truth is – they may be right according to the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins!

The beloved Irish President and former Minister for Arts Michael D Higgins has stated that he believes homework should be scrapped in favour of more artistic, innovative, and passionate pursuits. He explains that time at home and time at school should be separated.

In a radio appearance for RTE ’s news2day current affairs and news programme for children, the President was quizzed by children about his feelings on homework, and advocating for children and a no homework policy Michael D says, “I think myself, really that the time at home and the time in the school is an educational experience and it should get finished at the school and people should be able to use their time for other creative things”.

He also offered some sage (and very sweet) advice to the children of Ireland, sharing the importance of curiosity and friendship, “To stay curious about everything and I think it’s important to make sure you don’t miss the joy of sharing information”.

“And I think an important thing is friendship and to make sure that there’s no one left without friendship and that people belong. And we will all do individual things… but I think friendships that you make will in fact always be great memories and that is so important”.

He elaborated by saying that he thinks we should include people and allow people to just be themselves, “We’re all unique but at the same time we have a lot going for us”. Naturally, he also encouraged everyone to continue speaking our native language!

President Michael D Higgins calls for homework to be banned in Ireland

The country’s favourite leader has given hope to a new generation of students that the bane of their afterschool evenings could be scrapped.

  • 13:32, 20 JAN 2023
  • Updated 14:54, 20 JAN 2023

President Michael D Higgins

President Michal D Higgins has called for homework to be banned.

President Higgins argues that this would make time for young people to engage in more creative pursuits outside school hours.

The former Arts Minister believes that school activities should end at the school gate.

He was speaking to RTE’s news2day current affairs and news programme for children on the occasion of the programme’s 20th birthday.

When asked what his opinion of homework President Higgins said: “I think myself, really that the time at home, and the time in the school is an educational experience and it should get finished at the school and people should be able to use their time for other creative things.”

To mark the show’s two decades on air, students from St Kevin’s National School, Littleton, County Tipperary put questions from RTÉ news2day viewers to President Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin.

In a wide-ranging interview, the children asked the President questions like, what was your favourite sport when you were in school?

When you were nine years old what did you want to be?

And when did you decide you wanted to be President?

Irish President Michael D. Higgins speaking at Aras an Uachtarain, Dublin on September 9, 2022.

The students also asked the President about his dogs, his official trips abroad, his favourite subject in school, differences between now and when he was a child and his favourite book. The President also spoke to the children about his love of handball and the importance of friendship in their lives.

RTÉ news2day will broadcast some of the President’s interview as part of Friday afternoon’s birthday celebrations at 4.20pm on RTÉ2 and RTÉ News channel and the full interview will be available later on Friday evening on the RTÉ Player.

In a message to the children of Ireland and the viewers of RTÉ news2day, President Michael D. Higgins gave this advice: “To stay curious about everything and I think it’s important to make sure you don’t miss the joy of sharing information.

“And I think an important thing is friendship and to make sure that there’s no one left without friendship and that people belong. And we will all do individual things... but I think friendships that you make will in fact always be great memories and that is so important.

“And also have the courage to stand your own ground and let other children be allowed the space of standing their ground too because none of us are the same.

“We’re all unique but at the same time we have a lot going for us.”

President Higgins also encouraged the children of Ireland to speak the Irish language.

He encouraged them to speak Irish in a fun way and to feel free to use whatever bits of the language that they have.

The problem with homework - and no homework days

The Taoiseach opened a can of worms earlier this year when he told kids across Ireland they could have the day off from homework. He also helped restart an age-old debate - what is the point of homework?

To celebrate National Confidence Day back in March, An Taoiseach , while isolating in New York had a special video message to school kids in Ireland.

“There is so much more we can all achieve if we believe in ourselves more and I’m asking you to believe in yourself today and every day.

“I’ve been speaking to your teachers, and they’re happy to let you off your homework for one day,” Micheál Martin said.

Happy days, or day, you might think.

Except it wasn’t, because what actually transpired is that for thousands of students across Ireland they still had homework - despite what the Taoiseach said.

While Micheál Martin is the leader of the country, he doesn’t rule over every class and school in Ireland. Rather, the “no homework” day was an initiative cooked up by Starcamp, who had contacted the Taoiseach’s office as well as schools across Ireland to inform them about National Confidence Day, part of which involved getting homework off.

But it was still down to the individual schools to decide whether they wanted to grant what the Taoiseach had commanded, and while many schools did, many others didn’t. This led to a lot of confusion and a lot of unhappy kids, parents and teachers.

It also dragged up a perennial debate about homework, which boils down to this: What is the point of homework? Do we have too much of it? Should we be following Finland’s lead and doing a lot less of it?

What happened on ‘no homework’ day?

Aideen O' Grady, founder and managing director of Starcamp , an educational company which organises camps for students throughout the year, told Buzz that she created National Confidence Day as a response to all the hardships that kids faced throughout the pandemic .

O’Grady created an educational package which featured Will Sliney, Keith Barry and Rory’s Stories. That package was then sent to schools throughout the country for free and the event was publicised widely.

"Basically I wanted to create something we could give to kids and teachers on national No Confidence Day," O’Grady said. No homework was part and parcel of it.

O’Grady said she thinks about 85 per cent of schools ran with the no homework day “but obviously the more vocal ones didn’t.”

She acknowledged that it’s entirely up to schools to decide if they want to grant a no homework day or to take part in the activities that Starcamp compiled

The response from schools was "insane," O'Grady said.

"It’s been such an incredible response to it that I hope it will continue and that schools will do a little more with it.”

Starcamp, based in Cork, also ran a No Homework Day in 2021 in which the Taoiseach also granted homework off to kids around St. Patrick’s Day.

O’Grady said she spoke to the Taoiseach’s press secretary and his team liked the message around National Confidence Day and that’s why he got on board.

international no homework day ireland

The office of the Taoiseach may have been on board, but others most definitely were not.

On Twitter, Simon Lewis , an education podcaster and principal of Carlow Educate Together primary school called it "nonsense" adding, "most children don't get daily homework if they get homework at all. Another example of how out of touch these companies and the politicians are.”

However, Lewis was quickly schooled on the first part of his tweet: Kids in Ireland by and large do get homework on a daily basis, even if many parents and teachers would happily see homework ditched or substantially reduced.

“I’d have a fairly strong reaction to this kind of thing,” Lewis told Buzz, adding that he was surprised how things have gone back to “normal” post Covid.

“In Covid times, things like homework seemed to be disappearing from our world which I was very happy about.”

“Our concept of homework is always seen as a negative thing. Why do we look at homework as a negative thing?”

"When giving [homework] off is a kind of a prize, it just seems to me a bizarre thing, when the purpose of homework is to help children learn what they may not have caught or to reinforce what they learned in school," Lewis said.

He was also critical of how the March "no homework day" transpired, questioning the role of "commercial entities and politicians and celebrities" in giving homework off.

Teachers Buzz spoke with, who didn't give homework off on National Confidence Day said it was partly because they didn't know anything about the event. Others pointed out that they have their homework schedule mapped out weeks in advance, and the impromptu break was an annoyance.

Buzz contacted the Department of Education for comment about the no homework day in March as well as for information about policies and guidelines around granting a national no homework day.

A spokesperson for the Department told Buzz that "organisers of the Starcamp had requested all schools participating to take part in a no homework day in exchange for a good deed," but that "this was not a wider policy, it was for those involved with the Starcamp’s National Confidence Day initiative only.

As to the wider debate around homework and its place in the curriculum, a spokesperson for the Irish National Teachers' Organisation told Buzz that there are no motions around homework scheduled for discussion at this week's national conference, which concluded today in Killarney.

The problem(s) with homework

Lewis is likely not alone with the list of problems he has identified with "traditional" homework: It's boring and often too lengthy

“What’s the point in sending kids home with a page of maths, a page of spellings, a page of this, a page of that? That’s not proper homework," Lewis said, adding that it's more like "punishment"

He thinks that where and when it's given, homework needs to be meaningful, not a chore, there needs to be choice and it needs to be interesting. Lewis is something of an anti-homework apostle; since 2011 he's been on a mission to get rid of all homework in primary schools.

At his own school he leaves it up to the teachers what to give and how much to give, "as they know best."

"But I try to encourage them that the homework is meaningful and is completely optional, so that if the child doesn’t do it that’s OK," he said.

That's a message that most parents could get behind, especially parents of primary school children as it often falls to parents, especially mums, to become the support teacher at home.

international no homework day ireland

Finish-ing with homework

O'Grady from Starcamp, says that a survey carried out by Starcamp found that 50 per cent of respondents wanted "homework to be radically changed and decreased."

A quarter of the parents surveyed wanted homework abolished completely.

O'Grady, a parent of four school-age children, said she would be in favour of having it "deceased massively and changed."

By example, she cites the homework her 10-year-old son got the previous day to our interview which dragged on for the best part of two hours.

"He had no time (to play) with his friends at this crucial time in his life," she said, adding that she'd happily sit down with the Department of Education and discuss this.

Like many, O'Grady singled out Finland, an education pioneer which has been experimenting with reducing homework.

According to the OECD - a club of mostly rich countries - pupils in Finland have the least amount of outside work and homework than any other students in the world.

What's more, the less is OK model they are trialling hasn't impacted Finland's standings in the international academic rankings : in reading, mathematics and science, students in Finland still perform better than average for OECD countries.

Homefun - an alternative?

Ciara Byrne, a primary school teacher in Scoil Eimhín Naofa, Monasterevin, trialled an alternative to homework in her school in 2020 which she called 'homefun'.

Writing in the INTO magazine In Touch , Byrne writes that: "...international evidence would strongly suggest that homework does not improve academic performance – it actually might be counterproductive, and evidence has shown that homework can harm family life, can be a cause of worry for children and increase stress in their homes."

Byrne, instead, set out to devise an alternative to homework centred on physical activities and gratitude over a month long period. Traditional homework such as spellings, tables and prescribed reading was ditched in favour of a more flexible regime.

"Children were encouraged to read, undertake physical activity and perform a gratitude task daily. In addition to this, they were given a menu of optional tasks," Byrne writes.

"These tasks were to provide ideas for parents, to help realise the potential for home learning, which is removed from the traditional type of homework. The idea was that families wouldn’t need to go home after collecting their child at school and sit at the kitchen table.

"Homefun was designed to give families much more flexibility and freedom in the evenings.

"The evidence from my research echoed that of the international data. The vast majority (62 per cent) of parents surveyed said that homework led to tension in their homes. The vast majority (78 per cent) of the children surveyed reported getting upset when doing their homework. The majority of teachers surveyed (53 per cent) did not believe homework was an enjoyable activity for their class.

"Yet, 100 per cent of teachers surveyed believed Homefun was enjoyable for their class."

Bottom line

"Homework is a hugely emotive thing," Lewis, the Carlow Educate Together principal said.

"There’s a reason why it becomes a big news story we need to look at it in-depth: Why we give it and how we give it and what’s the purpose?

The Irish school that doesn't believe in homework

One dublin primary school’s ‘no-homework policy’ has been a resounding success.

If the messages I received following a recent column I wrote on my feelings regarding homework are anything to go by, then there's an awful lot of disgruntled parents who are silently willing an end to afternoons of homework battles with tired and frustrated children. What's possibly more surprising, however, is that it appears there are a lot of teachers willing an end to homework too.

Yet, on many of us plod, negotiating afternoons of maths, Irish and English sentences, while wishing the powers that be might take a leaf out of their Finnish counterparts’ books and abolish homework for once and for all. But is homework just a necessary evil or should be we looking at a change in how we’re doing things?

Psychotherapist Mary McHugh believes we're curtailing children's natural "curious, imaginative and creative" tendencies by "pressuring them to conform.

“Our children, from the age of three, are being trained to sit still and from five upwards, it’s expected that this is the norm.”

My partner refuses to dress up sexily for me, and it’s ruining our relationship

‘I encourage women to be a birthzilla, if necessary’

Speaking of the expectation that children will sit at a desk in school for several hours a day and then are required to continue doing so at home, McHugh says that “stress is showing up at an alarming scale and yet we’re still applying more pressure academically younger and younger”.

“We’re living in a world of unrealistic expectations both externally and internally. Our young are embodying this as the norm and it’s not okay,” McHugh continues. “We need equal hours of work, rest and play in our adulthood – which most of us do not have. How many of our children have that balance and who is ensuring that this happens?”

Pointing towards the change in parental circumstances, McHugh says parents in today’s world are under “severe pressure. They work long hours and are trying to juggle everything. Spending time helping children with their homework can add more stress to their relationship, which can lead to disconnection.

“Some of our children may leave their home in the morning and not return for up to 12 hours. This is pressure and we are seeing it in our children, who are presenting with extreme anxiety, eating disorders, behavioural difficulties and auto-immune illnesses.

Homework was causing stress for the children, stress for the parents policing the doing of homework and pressure on the teachers to mark homework

“Our children need to get out and learn to have time at play. This allows a digestion of the information they take in at school.”

‘A lot of stress’

Sr Maria Hyland, principal of Loreto Primary School, Rathfarnham, Dublin, which is currently trialling a "no-homework policy" (except for 6th class) says she'd noticed "that there appeared to be a lot of stress around the whole area of homework".

“Homework was causing stress for the children, stress for the parents policing the doing of homework and pressure on the teachers to mark homework that is ‘do-able’ at home, explain it and ensure all knew what they were required to do.”

Along with the “inordinate amount of time” it took some students to take down their homework and pack their books, there was the inevitable and frequent packing of the incorrect book, which Sr Maria explains led to “tears at homework time”, “parents coming back to collect the forgotten book” or “contacting other parents on WhatsApp to see what their little darling was supposed to be doing”.

international no homework day ireland

“School children need to rest their minds and relax a little to recharge their batteries. And to take time to explore something of interest to them.”

Quoting Jean Piaget, Sr Maria says "the goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for the child to invent and discover. To create people who are capable of doing new things."

Initial reaction from parents to the no-homework policy has been “extremely positive”, Sr Maria explains. Those with reservations “have said they are willing to try it and are keeping an open mind about it”.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, “the children are very happy”.

The policy will not impact on the teacher’s ability to cover the curriculum, Sr Maria says. “In fact, it gives more teacher-pupil contact time and teachers feel they have more time for teaching than trying to get homework corrected and sorted. In class, teachers are finding they can assess the children’s work rather than the parents’ work. Very often, the standard of homework did not match the child’s classroom ability as there was too much help from parents, which is understandable when parents are under pressure to get the homework over with and try and restore peace to the house.

“The Friday test and other assessments will inform parents of how their child is doing in class.

“Already, parents are saying they have more time for chatting with their child and one parent said they now have time to play a board game in the evening.

‘Fresh and happy’

“Children come in fresh and happy in the mornings,” Sr Maria adds. “There is a great buzz around the place, which is nice.”

Alison Walsh’s three daughters, Sarah, (5th), Ellie (3rd) and Isabel (1st) class attend Loreto. “At first, I was actually a little bit apprehensive” she explains. “I was a little bit concerned about supporting their schoolwork at home. As it’s being rolled out, I can see that it’s actually great.”

It's given me more time in the evening. The children are definitely less stressed as well

Because the children still have Friday tests, they still revise their spellings and tables, Walsh explains, but this can be done during the week as suits.

“In the initial email that the school sent out, they encourage children to play outside, help cook the dinner, to record and watch the children’s news. That’s actually been my favourite part of it. I just think it’s great that they’re a little bit more aware of what’s going on in the world.

“It’s given me more time in the evening. The children are definitely less stressed as well.” Following mid-week after-school activities, Walsh says her children now have time to call for their friends who live on the road.

Lynne Caffrey’s daughters Lois and Holly are in 2nd and 1st class respectively in Loreto. She was initially a little worried about the “no-homework policy”, as focused projects had replaced standard homework in the children’s previous school. Parental involvement in these projects had created competitiveness, she explains.

“Loreto communicated it so well and the rationale was so clear that I trusted them.

“I work every day, so to come home and not have to negotiate it [homework] when the children are tired and I’m hungry is a revelation. It led to fights and the urge to correct mistakes was huge, which wasn’t good for their esteem.”

While it took a little adjusting to the new routine, Caffrey says “it’s calmer and the house is less stressed. It feels like I can really enjoy the time I get with them. So far, it’s been a very welcome change. I did fear resentment building as the homework became more substantial with each year. They definitely love being the kids in afterschool who get to play outside instead of doing homework!”

No Homework Day – March 6, 2025

No Homework Day, celebrated on March 6, is a holiday that seeks to give students a break from homework assignments. Homework refers to a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed outside the classroom. Common homework could include any of a variety of required reading, mathematical exercises to be completed, information to be reviewed before a test, or other skills to be practiced, depending on the discretion of the teacher involved. The issue of how effective homework assignments are has been debated over the years. In a general sense, homework does not particularly improve the academic performance of students.

History of No Homework Day

No Homework Day was created by couple Thomas and Ruth Roy as a means to help students focus on activities other than homework. It is expected that on this day, parents give their children a break from homework and that teachers at school equally take a break from giving homework.

Research has shown that homework can lead to stress, thereby being counterproductive to the learning process. Homework eats up children’s free time for other activities necessary for development, and its importance in learning is rather obscure. Professors at Duke University have suggested that the 10-minute rule should apply to homework.

The No Homework Day isn’t about removing homework completely from the picture, but it is meant for everyone involved to take a step back and relax. It is about giving children a break. No Homework Day encourages students to take a break from homework for a day and focus on other rewarding activities like sleeping, reading a good novel, creating art, playing a sport, or any other such activity.
