Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Public Health: How to Encourage People to Lead a Healthier Lifestyle

To fight against health problems like obesity, smoking, and alcohol abuse, governments are experimenting with new ways of regulating lifestyles. These methods, or incentives, usually involve a “nudge” that takes advantage of the irrational patterns in human behavior to encourage people to make the least harmful choices for their health.

woman in a field

Health risk factors include hidden fats and sugars in processed foods, as well as cigarettes and alcohol. When consumed in excess, they can cause diseases like diabetes, cancer, heart problems, and chronic respiratory problems, which are responsible for more than half of deaths worldwide. To fight against this increasing phenomenon, public policy makers are trying out new approaches to modify lifestyle habits. A new type of measure has emerged, which seeks to take into account how people actually behave, and not how they are expected to behave as rational agents. Alberto Alemanno, who has focused on the particular case of tobacco, does not beat around the bush: “A growing number of studies show that human beings do not always act in a way that maximizes their interests, making decisions, for example, that lead to short-term pleasure but do not take into account long-term negative effects.”

The gentle nudge

The nudge approach is based on findings in behavioral research, which draws on economics, psychology, anthropology, and sociology. It aims to gently encourage [nudge] individuals to make better decisions while maintaining their freedom of choice. As such, managers take advantage of patterns of irrationality to shape the context and decision-making process to influence choices. This can mean, for example, presenting food in a cafeteria so that people choose salad, fruit, and vegetables rather than foods with poor nutritional quality. This form of governance, which is based on “choice architecture,” is still in the experimental phase. The Conservative- led government in the UK is the only one to date to have created an administration to implement the approach.

The fight against smoking

The nudge method holds promise for the fight against smoking. Many countries worldwide have gradually established regulation that is now universally accepted. But smoking remains the leading cause of avoidable deaths in both the developed world and in emerging countries. The nudge approach could help to work out the contradictions of traditional methods where by states encourage citizens to stop smoking by multiplying publicity campaigns and by increasing taxes, while at the same time organizing the official sale of tobacco and financing a good portion of their budget through taxation. When it comes to tobacco, the traditional “command and control” method is necessary to restrict access to the product, by banning smoking in public places, for example. The first objective is to reject smoking as normal, acceptable behavior, and to make it a quasi-deviant behavior; as a second step, the nudge reinforces changes to the social norm. While a nudge modifies behaviors in a predictable way, it should not exclude any options, nor does it need to change economic incentives. For example, some governments are studying new radical measures, like the standardization of neutral cigarette packaging with no logo, and the prohibition of branded products on the shelves of tobacconists [tobacco shops] with purpose of countering industry marketing efforts and reducing the visual impact of their brands. The product itself, however, remains perfectly legal.

A growing number of studies show that human beings do not always act in a way that maximizes their interests.

Can the method be extended to food and alcohol?

The debate today is on whether or not a similar approach, of “enabling while discouraging,” can be extended to other areas such as the fight against alcoholism, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise. “The legitimacy of state intervention is more problematic for food and alcohol,” says Alemanno. “Tobacco, unlike food, is not a vital need. And what further complicates the regulation of unhealthy food is that consumption patterns are just one factor among several others—physiological, genetic, even socio-economic—which, according to scientists, promote obesity.” In Western societies, it is generally agreed that individuals should be free to choose their own lifestyle, even if they decide to make high-risk choices. The argument is particularly strong when it comes to alcohol and foods high in fat and sugar, which have associations with celebrations and other social rituals deeply rooted in Western culture. In the case of tobacco, the problem was resolved by shifting the debate from the rights of smokers to the rights of non-smokers who were being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Is it right to manipulate people?

Nudges and traditional interventions usually combine forces, making it difficult to measure the impact of either on a particular policy. “Empirically, we see a decline in consumption, but how do you know if it is due to this or that nudge or to an increase in taxes on tobacco?” questions Alemanno. Moreover, if nudges are transparent, they may fail, as people do not like to feel they are being manipulated, even if it is for their own good. Alemanno also raises the risk of the “tyranny of health”: “Obsessed by the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle, individuals risk stressing out so much when they miss their gym class or daily jog that it cancels out the benefits obtained.”

What are the Implications for Leaders?

How to Live a Long, Healthy Life

The importance of sleep and mental health..

Posted August 22, 2023 | Reviewed by Tyler Woods

  • Why Is Sleep Important?
  • Find a sleep therapist near me

Many of us aspire to live a long and healthy life, enjoying an active and independent lifestyle as we age. The good news is that longevity is not entirely out of your control. There are practical steps you can take to increase your chances of living longer and having a long healthspan.

Two of the most important factors for living a long, healthy life are getting restorative sleep and maintaining good mental health.

Restorative Sleep for a Longer Lifespan and Healthspan

Restorative sleep plays a crucial role in achieving optimal health and longevity. It involves progressing through the five sleep stages. These stages allow your body to repair itself and rebalance hormones . Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Uninterrupted and deep sleep cycles within this time frame indicate that you're reaping the rewards of restorative sleep.

Benefits of Restorative Sleep

  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: When you sleep, your body engages in repair and hormone balance. This leads to a decreased risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Sleep also aids in regulating blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Furthermore, quality sleep enhances immune function, making you less vulnerable to infectious illnesses.
  • Brain Health: Sleep is essential for brain health. During sleep, your brain eliminates toxins accumulated throughout the day. Inadequate sleep disrupts this cleansing process, resulting in toxin buildup. Over time, this accumulation could contribute to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Prioritizing quality sleep acts as a safeguard for your brain's well-being as you age.
  • Enhanced Mood and Reduced Stress : Sleep has a big impact on how you feel because it controls chemicals and hormones in your brain. Restorative sleep helps make serotonin; a chemical that makes you feel good. It also helps control stress hormones like cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can make you feel anxious and irritable. Lack of sleep can contribute to mood disorders like depression , stress, and anxiety .
  • Boost Energy and Immunity: After a good night's sleep, you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Getting enough sleep keeps your energy up and gives your immune system what it needs to function. Not getting enough sleep disrupts the body's recovery process, leading to fatigue and a higher chance of getting sick.

Prioritizing restorative sleep is essential to fully enjoy the health benefits that sleep offers.

Mental Health's Role in Longevity and Increased Healthspan

Conversations about lifespan and healthspan have traditionally centered on physical health. But the significance of mental well-being is now acknowledged as pivotal for extending life and enriching its quality. Mental health encompasses our emotions, thoughts, and how we interact with others. It affects our well-being, shaping how we live our lives. Experiencing depression, loneliness, and stress can shorten lifespans and diminish the quality of life. Taking care of our mental health is as important as looking after our physical health for a long and happy life.

Here’s how improving mental health influences longevity:

  • Decreases Risk of Physical Illness: Mental health disorders amplify chronic disease risk. For example, depression promotes inflammation and compromises immune function. This makes people more likely to develop illnesses like heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Managing mental health reduces disease risk factors.
  • Improves Adherence to Medical Treatment: For people with mental health challenges, it can be tough to follow treatment plans. Symptoms like low motivation and energy make it hard to maintain medications and lifestyle changes. Good mental health helps you take care of your physical self.
  • Reduces Unhealthy Behaviors: Mental health issues often lead to risky and unhealthy habits. These habits, such as smoking , unhealthy eating, and lack of exercise, can harm your health and lifespan. Taking care of your mental health can help reduce these harmful behaviors.
  • Averts Social Isolation : Feeling alone and not having enough social connections are becoming bigger health concerns. Mental health issues can lead to isolation from others. This isolation can make mental health problems worse and also affect physical health. Having social connections is good for both your mind and body, helping you live longer and better.

There is a strong mind-body connection when it comes to longevity. Seeking help for depression, anxiety, loneliness, and other mental health issues can have profound positive effects on your healthspan and lifespan.

Sleep Strategies for a Long and Healthy Life

Polina Kovaleva/Pexels

Given the myriad benefits of sleep for longevity, achieving restorative sleep should be a priority.

  • Stick to a set sleep schedule, even on weekends. Keeping a consistent bedtime and wake time regulates your circadian rhythm for better rest.
  • Develop a relaxing pre-bed routine like reading or taking a bath to wind down each night. Calming activities cue the body that it's time for sleep.
  • Limit exposure to screens before bed. The blue light emitted from electronics disrupts natural melatonin production.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol , heavy meals, and exercise close to bedtime. These can interfere with sleep.
  • Make sure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet. Block out excess light and noise for uninterrupted sleep.
  • Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. The right sleep environment sets you up for restful sleep.

If you struggle with insomnia or sleep issues, speak with your doctor. They can assess for underlying causes and recommend treatment options. Establishing healthy sleep patterns may require consistent effort, but the long-term benefits for longevity are well worth it.

Ways To Improve Mental Health for Longevity and a Longer Healthspan

Here are effective, evidence-based strategies to nurture your mental health and extend your healthspan:

  • Stay Active: Engaging in aerobic exercise triggers neurotransmitters that elevate mood and ease stress. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.
  • Stay Social: Spend time with friends, family, and your community to fight off feeling lonely.
  • Relax: Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness , meditation , yoga, and tai chi are effective in managing stress and anxiety.
  • Get Outdoors: Being in nature, getting sunlight, and breathing fresh air can really help your mental health.
  • Challenge Your Mind: Activities like reading, puzzles, crafts, or playing musical instruments help keep your brain sharp as you get older.
  • Give Back: Volunteering and helping others can make you feel good and connected to your community.

Prioritizing emotional well-being will have major dividends when it comes to your longevity. A holistic approach is ideal—combine lifestyle strategies with professional treatment if necessary.

Optimizing sleep and mental health can significantly increase your healthspan and longevity. Luckily, there are many evidence-based ways to improve your sleep and strengthen your mental health. Start incorporating the tips in this article and you’ll be well on your way to your healthiest years ahead.

The government should ensure the healthy lifestyle of people

The government should ensure the healthy lifestyle of people

Topic: Some people think that the government should ensure the healthy lifestyle of people, but others argue that it should be decided by individuals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Student’s Essay Submission

Many people believe that the government is responsible for implementing ways to improve healthy lifestyles of people. While others argue that leading a healthy lifestyle is an individual choice. This essay will discuss both views and provide my opinion.

When it comes to health, there are many ways the government can do to promote healthy manners to its people. For example, the government can impose tax on junk foods. Also, there are other ways like, building parks and stadium that encourage the people to exercise. In addition to that, the government can also promote health by forecasting programs and advertisement about health on tv and radio. Furthermore, conducting health related seminars and camps are another method of health promotion. Thus, it is true that the government policies and initiatives help the people to have a better lifestyle.

On the other hand, there is no denying the fact that, individuals are equally responsible for maintaining health. The lifestyles that people adopt is based on the choices that people make.No matter how hard the government tries, if he does not want to be healthy, then government has nothing to do about it.

In my opinion, it is the responsibility of the people to ensure a healthy pattern. The individual should take conscious effort in abstaining from unhealthy practices. The health promotions that the government undertakes become successful only when people decide to remain healthy.

In conclusion, maintaining a better lifestyle depends on the individuals. Refraining from deleterious practices is the best way to remain healthy.

Sample essay  keeping in mind the Essay Evaluation

Whether healthy lifestyle is an individual or a state prerogative has always been a bone of contention.  This essay will attempt to study both the viewpoints and provide an opinion. Some individuals refer to it as a state matter since healthy citizens are the biggest asset for any nation.  Healthy citizens result in overall well being of the nation with negligible medical expenses and a high happiness quotient.  For instance, in most of the developed nations in the West, government interventions such as free medical aid, subsidization of  expensive treatments, mediclaim coverage to all citizens alike keeps the population healthy and in good spirits.  Having secured the well being of its citizens, the country is then able to focus on other matters of strategic and national importance. However for some factions, health and lifestyle are purely individual and personal choices.  As per them, our lifestyle, activity patterns, food habits, diet is a reflection of our beliefs, family background, the region we hail from, the culture and tradition we follow etc. Similarly, the choice to opt for gym, yoga, power yoga, brisk morning walk, meditation etc is purely an individual’s right.  By following a combination of the above diet and exercise regimes, individuals define their health and lifestyles. I personally feel that while healthy lifestyle is a by and large a personal choice, but coupled with government intervention under the banner “prevention is better than cure” can help take the overall level of medical health and standard of living of the people to a comfortable position.

how to encourage someone to live a healthy lifestyle essay

Essay Example: How to Encourage Students to Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle

Parents, teachers, and principals play a significant role in encouraging students to live a healthy lifestyle. Ideally, they can make the environment of learning conducive through the provision of quality nutrition, a curriculum which integrates physical activities on regular school days, and giving the children lessons on the significance of embracing an active and healthy lifestyle. School should encourage students by creating an advisory council which focuses on students health. This council should comprise of parents, students, administrators, school staff, teachers and representatives of the community.

Central agendas should be on the implementation of physical activity, healthy nutrition and maintenance of a healthy environment for learning in school. A key objective should be the eradication of obesity. The council can use school health index to assess the school's physical activity, nutrition, and physical education policies. Assessment of the walkability of the school compound should be taken and register the presence of broken sidewalks, unsafe crossings or other factors that interfere with the students movement within the school territory. The presence of such environmental factors hinders normal movement of students.

Conceivably, the council should ensure a healthy lifestyle for the students in school through encouraging the consumption of healthy and highly nutritious food. On celebrating birthdays, parents should be encouraged to bring food such as fruits for their children in school. School should work with parents of the students with disabilities or special needs to ensure that curriculum on the physical activities are involved in the learning plan after and during school. Similarly, students should be encouraged to embrace a healthy lifestyle by guiding them to join or participate in various programs initiated by the US School Challenge. As an organization, US School Challenge plays crucial role in developing the school criteria for food quality, physical activity, nutrition education, physical education and meal program. The participation of millions of children in the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program helps them embrace good nutrition in school. In other instances, schools can as well provide Internet video clips to students that show the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The clip can comprise of sample individuals who have lived a healthy lifestyle with their storyline. The clips can as well consist of dietary guidelines for consuming nutritional food. The outcome of unhealthy lifestyle, i.e. obesity, should be considered in the clip. Students should be made aware that obesity is caused by poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Precise details on features of obesity and the level at which it is increasing will be a public alarm to the students.

Curriculum activities which include football, athletics and other social events need to be included in the education system. Notably, such activities will enhance their physical exercise. Students embrace physical exercises more than class work. Including them in every semester of the year as a form of competition improves the embracing attitude of the students. P.E can be integrated a week thrice within lessons. It can be made as part of lessons, being a compulsory activity gives the students to know the significance of the physical activity session.

The school management, through its manager, should be a role model and an advocate of a healthy lifestyle. These are done through the encouragement of staff to consume nutritious and healthy beverages and food with active exercise. A healthy lifestyle of school staff is a reflection of the students. The school principal should know the physical activities and nutrition needs of the school workers. He should develop objectives for promoting a healthy lifestyle among school staff. Increasing the number of school workers whom they have attained the national guidelines of physical activities bring closer the importance of healthy lifestyle to the students. It is important for learning institutions to provide support from administration for staff on the wellness programs that provide the various healthy lifestyles for the students in case of exercising and eating habits. The working environment should be transformed to ensure that it is conducive and this can take place by introducing changes that favour such transformation. . Changes may include incentives for physical activity, biking or walking apart from driving by car to school. Nonetheless, the principal should organize walking meetings for the staff whereby teachers and other staffs can make it to the meetings through walking certain distances. The management of learning institutions also has an important role to take. Specifically, the principal can organize athletic facilities programs for the staff and the students. Various studies have shown that the competition between employees and students is an inspiration to the students and encourages them to embrace the activity and do it with great enjoyment. School leader should have time to eat with the students; it can be either during breakfast, lunch hour or dinner. He or she can participate during the walking time with the students and can involve a race. In its actuality, this practice of leadership style encourages the students to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Children in lower classes should be taught on colors by use of vegetables and fruits. Children in the middle classes should be taught of measures and weight using vegetates and fruits from a nearby garden. Students on the upper levels should learn about the value of daily nutritions by use of charts and also through calorie counts. A teacher can walk to the field with the students as part of practicals for science class and ask them to name words and act out on physical activity from the story.

Schools should have a plant garden which comprises of fruits and vegetables. Students should be involved in the digging and planting of the farm. The school garden can be a form of physical and fun activities as well as an educational tool which help them to know how food is produced. School garden acts as a strategy for nutrition education and contributes to enhancing students knowledge of vegetables and fruits and influence perspective on their behavior and change. Integrating school garden with lessons in class, for example, cooking can increase their knowledge. The staff which serves food can give the students the opportunity to taste and learn healthy food preparation guidelines. Additionally, the school can incorporate programs which are focused on the activities selected by the students for a period. Rewards and incentives are given to the students that maintain or attain a healthy weight and have taken keenly healthy lifestyle. The school should organize the competition in the form of various faculties to cover all classes. The activities can be sports or modeling. Students, parents, school staff and teachers are given clear objectives of the program. Body weight and waist circumference will be measured throughout the period of the physical activity until the last day of the exercise. School health clinic doctors will take data and examine throughout the process to see the changes. At the grand finale of the activities, the rewards are given to the winners and those who made changes. The process will encourage students to embrace healthier lives.

Finally, it is important that parents encourage their student child to eat well. She should ensure that he/she eats five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Should help the student to select whole grains, lean protein sources i.e. turkey in part of the fatty food and dairy products with low-fat. Show them how to be keen on portion sizes. Stock healthy food on fridge such as yogurt with low fat, apples and carrot sticks for their availability when they feel hungry. Other than this, parents should encourage their children to maintain body fitness. Students of six years old should get a physical activity of 60 minutes daily. Those with 7 years and above should have 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise weekly. Parents should encourage their child to ride or walk to class to burn calories in part of a bus or being given a ride. He can as well attend school gym and sports after school. Conclusively, helping a child and being an example of a healthy lifestyle can give a student to embrace the healthy habit. School environment plays a significant role as well as parental care. Taking in of nutritious food and engaging in active physical activity can help in body fitness and hence healthy lifestyle.

The outdoors: A natural path to wellness

Carly boren discusses the restorative power of nature and its positive impacts on well-being for mental health awareness month.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an ideal time to explore the diverse benefits of nature on our well-being. For many, the outdoors act as a reminder of life's rhythms and the cyclical nature of our own experiences. Personally, hiking in the crunching leaves and crisp autumn air nurtured my mental resilience during childhood and adolescence. Later, camping trips allowed me to escape the digital overload of daily life. Now, mountain biking in the Sierra Nevada offers stress relief and clarity. These experiences, though personal, underscore a universal truth: nature heals.

A woman sits in a tent with a dog laying down next to her.

The relationship between spending time in nature and improved health is not just anecdotal but is widely supported by research. Research indicates that exposure to nature can decrease stress-related physiological symptoms (Alvarsson et al., 2010), increase focus (Faber Taylor & Kuo, 2011), reduce anxiety (Martyn & Brymer, 2014), and enrich spirituality (Unruh & Hutchinson, 2011). Being in nature has also been linked to better working memory, enhanced attention, and cognitive flexibility (Schertz & Berman, 2019). Additionally, the sounds of nature, from bird calls to flowing water, have been shown to reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, and enhance feelings of relaxation (Song et al., 2023).

For those grappling with mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, the advantages may be even more compelling. Interacting with the natural world can alleviate symptoms and restore mental well-being (Gregory, 2024). This kind of engagement can include activities like walking in a park, gardening, or stargazing at night. Research by Bratman et al. (2019) found participants who walked in natural settings reported lower levels of rumination, a key marker for risk of mental health disorders such as depression, compared to those who walked in urban environments. Green spaces, ranging from forests to parks, have been shown to reduce stress and increase overall happiness (Bratman et al., 2019; Capaldi et al., 2015). Blue spaces, such as those near bodies of water, have also been found to have calming effects that help to mitigate the overactivity of our sympathetic nervous system, promoting a more relaxed and attentive mental state (Gascon et al., 2017).

It’s not just the scenery that lays the groundwork for ongoing wellness. Natural environments encourage physical activity, which itself is a recognized mood enhancer and has notable benefits for cardiovascular health, like lower blood pressure and improved heart health (Jimenez et al., 2021; Gascon et al., 2016). Plus, soaking in the sunshine helps the body to produce Vitamin D, which has been linked to improvements in mood and cognitive function. But perhaps one of the most profound impacts of interacting with nature is the sense of connection it fosters. This connection extends to a deeper relationship with oneself, with others in the community, and with one's broader life purpose (Rugel et al., 2019).

In urban environments, where natural spaces are less accessible, the challenge to engage with the natural world increases. Yet, natural elements in cities can considerably enhance well-being. A seminal study by Ulrich (1984) found that hospitalized patients who could view trees from their window needed shorter postoperative hospital stays and required fewer pain medications than those whose views were of a brick wall. Furthermore, brief interactions with nature have been shown to spur psychological improvements, demonstrating nature's role as a potent, effective tool for positive health outcomes (Stott et al., 2024). In a study by Lee et al. (2015), participants who viewed a flowering green roof for 40 seconds made fewer omission errors and demonstrated more consistent responding to a task compared to participants who viewed a concrete roof. This study expanded on previous research suggesting that brief views of nature can increase both mood and attention. Nature prescription programs are even emerging in response to the high burden of chronic disease and increasingly sedentary, screen-focused lifestyles (Kondo et al., 2020).

The therapeutic potential of nature, known as ecotherapy, leverages these benefits to promote mental health through structured activities. Ecotherapy, an umbrella term for nature-based methods of healing, is based on the theories of ecopsychology. At its core, ecotherapy addresses the human-nature relationship and acknowledges that people are inseparable from their ecosystems (Buzzell and Chalquist, 2009). The integration of ecotherapy into counseling practice is gaining traction as a worthwhile, empirically supported approach. While it comes in many forms, some examples include taking traditional talk therapy outdoors, guided wilderness therapy, horticulture therapy, and equine-assisted therapy.

Incorporating nature into daily life doesn’t require grand gestures. Simple actions can considerably help overall well-being:

  • Routine walks: A short stroll through a park or along a trail can help you unwind.
  • Window views: If getting outside is tough, simply looking at nature from a window can lighten your mood and reduce stress.
  • Indoor plants: Bringing a bit of greenery indoors can purify the air and brighten your day.
  • Digital detox: Taking breaks from screens to spend time in nature can mitigate the effects of constant connectivity.

So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or need a break from the digital grind, reconnecting with nature may be the reset you need. During Mental Health Awareness Month this May, let's not forget the restorative power of the natural world and appreciate all that it provides.

  • What is Public Health?

To Protect Human Health, We Must Protect the Earth’s Health

“The Earth crisis now represents a humanitarian crisis,” says Sam Myers. But there are solutions that serve both people and the planet.

Public Health On Call

Human activities have transformed and degraded Earth’s natural systems. But it’s not just the planet that endures the harms of things like pollution and climate change. Changes like rising ocean temperatures and CO2 levels have cascading effects that threaten the future of humans.

In this Q&A, adapted from the  April 22 episode of Public Health On Call ,  Joshua Sharfstein , MD, talks with  Sam Myers , MD, faculty director of the new  Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health and founding director of the  Planetary Health Alliance , about this interdisciplinary approach to understanding how the state of the planet impacts human health and well-being.

What is planetary health?

Planetary health is a cross-disciplinary field that has emerged in the last eight or nine years. It focuses on how our transformation of nature—our degradation and alteration of all of our planet's natural systems—is coming back to affect our health.

Climate change, biodiversity loss, global-scale pollution of air, water, and soil, changes in land use and land cover—all driven by human activity—are resulting in increased burdens of disease and impacting all dimensions of human health. We want to understand what those dynamics are and how we can address them.

What are some examples of changes impacting human health?

We know that ocean warming is changing the size of both fish and fisheries. It’s also changing where the fisheries are located, moving them away from the tropics and toward the poles. We did a study to determine how many people depend on wild-harvested fish for critical nutrients and live close to a threshold of insufficient intake of those nutrients—what we define as the vulnerable population to these changes. We found that over a billion people fall into this category.

We’ve also found that crops like rice, wheat, and maize—foods that provide most of the calories in the global diet—tend to lose essential nutrients when grown at elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide like the ones we expect to see by about the middle of this century.

In our  free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) experiments , we grew 41 cultivars of those kinds of crops in seven locations across three continents over 10 years. We found that growing these staple food crops at high CO2 levels significantly reduces the amount of iron, zinc, and protein they contain. We then modeled what these findings would mean for populations in 150 countries and found that the CO2 effect alone would cause around 150-200 million people to be pushed into nutritional insufficiency of these nutrients.

Other research has shown that growing different cultivars of rice at elevated CO2 resulted in B vitamins being reduced by almost 30%. We used that data to model what that might mean for the risk of things like neural tube defects, and we found really large impacts.

What other environmental factors does planetary health consider?

Changing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere is just one very specific biophysical change, but we're changing all the biophysical conditions that our entire food production system has been developed to be optimized for: temperature, precipitation, amount of arable land, pollinators, and pest and pathogen relationships. All of those things are now changing in response to human activity in ways that usually represent headwinds for global food production, in terms of both quality and quantity.

How does planetary health address the extreme scale of the changes humans are causing the environment and the consequences of those?

The field of planetary health has emerged out of a recognition that the pace and scale at which we're transforming all our natural systems has become a global health crisis.

The global health impacts of the Earth crisis are kind of a silent pandemic, and there are parallels to the COVID pandemic we've just come out of. The COVID pandemic required massive mobilization of new technologies, investments in economic stimulus and foreign assistance, respect for science, and urgent global behavior change. This silent pandemic is probably much more impactful to human health. It could be addressed in a very similar way, but we’re doing very little.

You can't respond to a crisis until you recognize that there is a crisis. As you are trying to raise concern over planetary health, how is that warning signal being received?

The field is growing very quickly. We started the  Planetary Health Alliance about eight years ago, and we now have more than 400 organizations involved in more than 70 countries. There's been a very rapid proliferation of new courses, degree programs, and journals in planetary health. We’re also seeing government agencies adopting planetary health as a frame, including the European Union, certain national governments, and the UN system.

There has been a rapid understanding and recognition of the global health urgency related to the Earth crisis, but it's a drop in the bucket of what is really needed to fully mobilize and address the crisis.

Are there solutions that can address multiple problems at once?

Yes. From a policy standpoint, the goal is to find opportunities to both optimize human health and well-being and reduce our ecological footprint. In order to protect and regenerate the Earth’s natural life support systems, we have to change the way we’re living. The good news is there are a lot of ways we can do this, and many of these changes also have major co-benefits.

For example, switching to clean, renewable energy is important to addressing climate change. Doing so also reduces the amount of air pollution, which drives something like 9 million deaths every year. Greening our cities and designing them to be walkable and bikeable not only reduces greenhouse gasses and increases biodiversity; these changes also provide major mental and physical health benefits.

What is the Planetary Health Alliance and what does it do?

Contrary to what it sounds like, the Planetary Health Alliance doesn’t fight for the planet’s health—they’re fighting for human health and the health of other species.

It’s a recognition that the well-being of all life on earth depends on stable natural life support systems. Things like degradation of biodiversity, pollution, and land use change all interact with each other in very complex ways that affect these foundational conditions for all life on Earth:

  • The quality of air that we breathe.
  • The quality of water that we consume.
  • The quality and quantity of food we can produce.
  • Exposure to infectious disease and extreme weather events.

And these impacts are driving an urgent set of health problems.

The Alliance functions as sort of the backbone organization for this growing global field. That includes curating new knowledge, writing the  first textbook for the field , developing core competencies for education, creating a  platform to support educators and planetary health around the world, organizing an  annual meeting , and putting out  a newsletter .

One half of the Alliance’s focus is to create and support a global community of practice. The other half is what we call “mainstreaming planetary health,” which means taking that community of practice, the new knowledge, and conceptual frameworks out of the field and connecting them to action.

We’re working to ensure that policymakers, the private sector, and the general public are aware that the Earth crisis now represents a humanitarian crisis and that there are a variety of solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Tell us about the Planetary Health Institute you've started at Johns Hopkins.

The Institute is the first example of a major university using planetary health as a lens to bring faculty and students together across all of its schools and centers. The Institute is bringing together people in the arts and humanities, engineers, natural scientists, and people in government, law, and policy around this central project of planetary health. We’ll focus on research, education, policy, practice, and clinical  programs . And already, there are all kinds of interesting interdisciplinary initiatives at Hopkins that are focused on planetary health: One on planetary health cities, one on Indigenous health, and another one on food systems, just to name a few.

What’s Happening With Dairy Cows and Bird Flu

Is Lyme disease curable? Here's what you should know about tick bites and symptoms.

The sun is shining and the birds are chirping – it is nearly the perfect time of year to hit the trails or set up a campsite. While you’re enjoying the fresh air and cool breeze, it’s important to remember a few things: Stay hydrated , wear sunscreen and protect yourself from ticks and other insects .

Ticks can carry Lyme disease . You may become infected with the disease if you are bitten by black-legged ticks. Hallmark symptoms of Lyme disease in the acute stage include a “bullseye” rash, (erythema migrans), fever, chills, fatigue, and muscle and joint aches. Without treatment, Lyme disease can progress to include neurological, heart, and joint problems.

Lyme disease has become controversial in recent years – not because Lyme disease doesn’t exist (it does), or that it can’t cause long-term issues, (it can) but because predatory actors may promote unproven diagnostic testing or treatments. We help you parse out fact from fiction.

Why do so many Americans have Lyme disease?

You are at risk for tick bites when you hike or camp in heavily wooded areas. In the United States, there are cases reported in every state, however, it is most common in midwestern, northeastern, and mid-Atlantic states. According to the CDC , cases reported outside of these regions are likely due to being infected in another state, and then traveling somewhere else.

We also love pets . Ticks love to latch onto dogs and cats. You can get Lyme disease if your pet brings ticks inside your home.

Nervous about a tick bite? Here's what to know about Lyme disease from symptoms to treatment

Is Lyme disease curable?

Yes. For most people, a course of antibiotics (around 2-4 weeks worth) will wipe out the infection with no long-term damage.

Can you fully recover from Lyme disease?

Most people do fully recover. However, long-term damage may occur, especially if treatment is delayed. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine , some people with Lyme disease may go on to develop post-Lyme disease syndrome (PLDS), which is characterized by persistent musculoskeletal and nerve pain, fatigue and memory impairment.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins recently published a review article in Frontiers in Neurology that describes how autonomic nervous system dysfunction may occur in those with PLDS. Some syndromes that fall under autonomic nervous system dysfunction include postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome ( POTS ) and reflex sympathetic dystrophy ( complex regional pain syndrome or CRPS.) These conditions can cause a wide array of symptoms, ranging from lightheadedness or fainting to severe pain. It’s important to talk to your doctor, so they can help you pinpoint the cause of your symptoms.

America has a pain problem. How can we find relief?

Who should I trust to help with my symptoms?

Your primary care doctor or an infectious disease doctor is the most qualified to help if you suspect you may have Lyme disease or have not recovered after having Lyme disease. If you have severe Lyme complications or PLDS, a neurologist, cardiologist, or rheumatologist may be able to help.

You can protect yourself from ticks altogether by wearing long sleeves and pants, using bug repellent, checking your skin regularly and showering after being outside. By taking these precautions, you can play all day and keep the bugs away!
