Since my childhood, I was always asked this question– what I would want to be once I grow up, and I would always be confused. Over the years, I observed the functioning of different jobs and tried to find what suited me the best. Now that I am old enough to decide, I know the answer to this question.

The perfect job for me would be to become a doctor and give back to my people. I derived the inspiration for taking this role up because of my father, who has served as a doctor for 30 years. I remember him being late at night, hitting emergencies, treating people, and giving his all. Moreover, seeing him perform his job with utmost dedication for the betterment of others always inspired me.

I am currently studying MBBS– the degree to become a doctor in India and can't wait to step into a hospital. As a doctor, I aim to expand my ability to reach people in the farthest corners of the country and treat them. In fact, I have been interning in a village, where I have aided in childbirth and assisted in minor medical emergencies.

With my strong interest in Biology and the will to do something meaningful with my life, I am sure of this career path.

I have always been very creative and thoroughly interested in human psychology. I am also passionate about what people think and how they make decisions. Growing up, I wasn't aware of the different professions one could pursue. Moreover, my family has always been academically driven, so there was always pressure to do well in my studies.

The goal of the job application essay is to ensure that applicants have the right communication skills for the position offered. Outlining Your Essay

Step 1 Read the job listing and essay description carefully.

If you don't know much about the company, do a little research on it before you start writing. You might look at their website or do a general internet search with the name of the company to see if any news articles or other reports come up. Go beyond the four corners of the job listing so that you understand who will likely be reading your essay.
If there's anything in the job listing or essay requirements that you don't understand, contact the employer and ask about them. Employers are often impressed by applicants who clarify the employer's intent rather than making assumptions.

Step 2 State your theme or thesis statement upfront.

For example, if you're applying for a position in sales, you might want to write an essay about your ability to tailor your pitch to specific clients and close the deal. If you have the ability to be more creative, you might tailor your essay to "sell" yourself directly to the employer.

Step 3 Brainstorm 3 or 4 points that support your thesis statement.

For each of your points, think of a specific example you can relate briefly that illustrates the point. For example, if you've described yourself as a "team player," you might include an example of how you came in on your day off to complete some of the more monotonous tasks that no one else wanted to do so a project could be completed ahead of schedule.
It's a good idea to have more than one example in your outline for each point, even if you only end up using one. That way, if you start writing something and it ends up not working as well as you thought it would, you'll have a back-up handy.
Brainstorming can be difficult. If you find yourself churning over the same thoughts, stand up and take a break for a few minutes. Step outside or go for a walk to clear your head, then come back to it.

Step 1 Start with an introductory paragraph that describes you and your essay.

Think of this paragraph as telling the hiring manager what you're going to tell them in the essay. Outline the points you're going to elaborate on in the essay that back up your theme or thesis statement.
Sometimes it's best to go back and write your introduction after you've written the body of your essay. That way, you can make sure the introduction provides an outline that matches the body.

If the employer listed specifically what should be included in your essay, follow their order, since that's what they'll be looking for when they read the essay.
Write in the first person and make yourself the star of any anecdote you include as an example. Step 3 Create transitions between each paragraph of your essay.

Finalizing Your Essay

For example, you might start by looking solely at punctuation, then read through again focusing on spelling.
If you find that you tend to repeat a particular error, go through your essay looking for that error specifically.

Describe a Job [IELTS Cue Card]

In part two of the IELTS speaking test, you may be asked to describe a wide range of things: a tradition , an indoor game , your hometown , an historic place , a large company , a mistake you have made , and much more. It is hard to predict those questions, but you can look at ideas (or topics) that frequently occur. One such issue is employment, and thus when it comes to IELTS speaking cue cards, it is reasonable to expect to be asked to describe a job .

In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to describe a job you would like to have . We will explore the cue card and its meaning, some useful language, and then I will show you my sample answer.

The Cue Card: Describe a Job

First of all, it is important to note that for IELTS you cannot just predict the cue card you will be given, so we should look at common ideas and just practise with them. Thus, there could be many different cue cards that ask you to “describe a job.” For example, it could say describe a job…

you have done in the past
that makes the world a better place
that is considered important in your country
you would not like to do

In other words, you basically could be asked to describe a job possessing any sort of characteristic. However, I think the most common and reasonable cue card is the one asking you to look into your own future and decide on a job you would like to do.

For example:

Describe a job you would like to have. You should say: – what it is – why you would like to have this job – what skills you will need to do this job and explain why you want to have this job.

For this cue card, we would need to think of a job, then describe it, saying why we would want to do it and what skills it would involve. Keep in mind that you don’t really have to talk about all of the bullet points, but it is a good idea to do so. Also, you don’t have to be completely honest! Just picking a job that is easy to do might be a good idea. 😉

Choosing the Right Language

When it comes to giving a good answer in IELTS speaking part 2, you should use language that is accurate rather than trying to show off to the examiner. It does help, however, to know some topic-specific vocabulary, so make sure you are familiar with common IELTS topics.

In this case, the vocabulary that you use could be related to the broad topic of employment or it could be related to the more specific topic of your chosen job. For example, if you want to be a teacher, you would need some education vocabulary. If you want to work in healthcare, you would need words related to that. The same is true of cooking and almost anything else.

Let’s look then at some vocabulary about employment because that can really help us to describe a job.

Apprentice	(noun) a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages	To become a carpenter, you have to be an for a while to pick up the skills.
Commute	(verb/noun) travel some distance between one’s home and place of work on a regular basis	I want to work from home because I don’t want to waste half my day .
Earn a living	(phrase) make money to cover your basic expenses	I plan on by editing videos for YouTubers.
Internship	(noun) the position of a student or trainee who works in an organisation, sometimes without pay, in order to gain work experience.	I plan on doing a short with a financial company before deciding on my next steps.
Salary	(noun) a fixed regular payment, typically paid on a monthly basis but often expressed as an annual sum	You can earn a pretty good as an IT professional, even though it’s a very competitive industry.
Self-employed	(adj.) working for oneself as a freelance or the owner of a business rather than for an employer	Of course, I would prefer to be but there are some drawbacks to consider.
Training	(noun) the action of teaching a person a particular skill	It’s not something you can just do right away; you have to undergo a period first.
Wage	(noun) a fixed regular payment earned for work or services, typically paid on a daily or weekly basis.	The aren’t great but I really like the job and that’s more important than money.

The above words could all be useful, but you should try to learn more by reading news articles and other stories about employment, then picking up the words from context. You should also read about the jobs you would like to do and make note of specific vocabulary for describing these.

Sample Band 9 Answer

When I was younger, I dreamed of working in conservation. I know that may sound like an odd thing, but I was obsessed with the natural world at that time and I really just wanted to live my life outdoors in a place where I could see and help lots of animals. I still think about it sometimes and it would be wonderful if I could find a position someday in the future where I could do something like this.

Typically, jobs in conservation range from the basic level at which people may be paid to plant trees, clean up rubbish, or record data to the more advanced levels at which there is real scientific work done. However, there are many other possibilities as it is a large field. I would be happy doing almost anything, but I don’t quite have the qualifications for a scientific post, unfortunately, so I would probably settle for something manual that lets me work outside.

This sort of job could entail tagging animals, mapping forests, cleaning up beaches, or marking trails. I would be happy to do any of those things and to learn whatever skills are necessary. I fully expect that it will involve a period of training and that I would effectively be an intern or apprentice for a while, but that is ok. I think it is important to have the humbling experience of being a beginner at something and learning from scratch.

As such, there are no skills really necessary except a drive to make the world a better place and a willingness to learn. These are things I possess because conservation is my passion and the world desperately needs passionate people right now.

What happened in the Kolkata rape case that triggered doctors’ protests?

Activists and doctors in India demand better safeguarding of women and medical professionals after a trainee medic was raped and murdered in Kolkata.

Following a murder of a 31 year old post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor by rape and torture inside a government hospital, activists of different humanitarian and political organisations and medical professionals participate in a rally with posters and torches demanding adequate intervention of the ruling government and exemplary punishment of the culprits, in Kolkata, India, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024.

Activists and doctors across India continued to protest on Wednesday to demand justice for a female doctor, who was raped and murdered while on duty in a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Feminist groups rallied on the streets in protests titled “Reclaim the Night” in Kolkata overnight on Wednesday – on the eve of India’s independence day – in solidarity with the victim, demanding the principal of RG Kar Medical College resign. Some feminist protesters also marched well beyond Kolkata, including in the capital Delhi.

While the protests were largely peaceful, a small mob of men stormed the medical college and vandalised property. This group was dispersed by the police.

This comes after two days of nationwide protests by doctors following the incident at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal’s capital city. “Sit-in demonstrations and agitation in the hospital campus will continue,” one of the protesting doctors, identified as Dr Mridul, told Al Jazeera.

Services in some medical centres were halted indefinitely, and marches and vigils shed light on issues of sexual violence, as well as doctors’ safety in the world’s most populous nation.

What happened to the doctor in Kolkata?

A 31-year-old trainee doctor’s dead body, bearing multiple injuries, was found on August 9 in a government teaching hospital in Kolkata.

The parents of the victim were initially told “by hospital authorities that their daughter had committed suicide,” lawyer and women’s rights activist Vrinda Grover told Al Jazeera. But an autopsy confirmed that the victim was raped and killed.

Grover has appeared for victims in sexual violence cases in India in the past, including Bilkis Bano , a Muslim woman who was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots, and Soni Sori, a tribal activist based in Chhattisgarh state.

Thousands of doctors marched in Kolkata on Monday, demanding better security measures and justice for the victim.

On Tuesday, the Kolkata High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halting of elective services in hospitals starting on Monday. Elective services are medical treatments that can be deferred or are not deemed medically necessary.

On Tuesday, FORDA announced on its X account that it is calling off the strike after Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda accepted protest demands.

One of these demands was solidifying the Central Protection Act, intended to be a central law to protect medical professionals from violence, which was proposed in the parliament’s lower house in 2022, but has not yet been enacted.

FORDA said that the ministry would begin working on the Act within 15 days of the news release, and that a written statement from the ministry was expected to be released soon.

Why are some Indian doctors continuing to protest?

However, other doctors’ federations and hospitals have said they will not back down on the strike until a concrete solution is found, including a central law to curb attacks on doctors.

Those continuing to strike included the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), Delhi-based All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indira Gandhi Hospital, local media reported.

Ragunandan Dixit, the general secretary of the AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association, said that the indefinite strike will continue until their demands are met, including a written guarantee of the implementation of the Central Protection Act.

Medical professionals in India want a central law that makes violence against doctors a non-bailable, punishable offence, in hopes that it deters such violent crimes against doctors in the future.

Those continuing to protest also call for the dismissal of the principal of the college, who was transferred. “We’re demanding his termination, not just transfer,” Dr Abdul Waqim Khan, a protesting doctor told ANI news agency. “We’re also demanding a death penalty for the criminal,” he added.

“Calling off the strike now would mean that female resident doctors might never receive justice,” Dr Dhruv Chauhan, member of the National Council of the Indian Medical Association’s Junior Doctors’ Network told local news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).

Which states in India saw doctors’ protests?

While the protests started in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Monday, they spread across the country on Tuesday.

The capital New Delhi, union territory Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow and city Prayagraj, Bihar capital Patna and southern state Goa also saw doctors’ protests.

Who is the suspect in the Kolkata rape case?

Local media reported that the police arrested suspect Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who would visit the hospital often. He has unrestricted access to the ward and the police found compelling evidence against him.

The parents of the victim told the court that they suspect that it was a case of gang rape, local media reported.

Why is sexual violence on the rise in India?

Sexual violence is rampant in India, where 90 rapes were reported on average every day in 2022.

Laws against sexual violence were made stricter following a rape case in 2012, when a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern was brutally gang-raped and murdered on a bus in Delhi. Four men were hanged for the gang rape, which had triggered a nationwide protests.

But despite new laws in place, “the graph of sexual violence in India continues to spiral unabated,” said Grover.

She added that in her experience at most workplaces, scant attention is paid to diligent and rigorous enforcement of the laws.

“It is regrettable that government and institutions respond only after the woman has already suffered sexual assault and often succumbed to death in the incident,” she added, saying preventive measures are not taken.

In many rape cases in India, perpetrators have not been held accountable. In 2002, Bano was raped by 11 men, who were sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2022, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorised the release of the men, who were greeted with applause and garlands upon their release.

However, their remission was overruled and the Supreme Court sent the rapists back to jail after public outcry.

Grover believes that the death penalty will not deter rapists until India addresses the deeply entrenched problem of sexual violence. “For any change, India as a society will have to confront and challenge, patriarchy, discrimination and inequality that is embedded in our homes, families, cultural practices, social norms and religious traditions”.

What makes this case particularly prominent is that it happened in Kolkata, Sandip Roy, a freelance contributor to NPR, told Al Jazeera. “Kolkata actually prided itself for a long time on being really low in the case of violence against women and being relatively safe for women.”

A National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report said that Kolkata had the lowest number of rape cases in 2021 among 19 metropolitan cities, with 11 cases in the whole year. In comparison, New Delhi was reported to have recorded 1, 226 cases that year.

Prime Minister Modi’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for dismissing the government in West Bengal, where Kolkata is located, led by Mamata Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Banerjee’s party is part of the opposition alliance.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in parliament, also called for justice for the victim.

“The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration,” he posted on X on Wednesday.

Roy spoke about the politicisation of the case since an opposition party governs West Bengal. “The local government’s opposition will try to make this an issue of women’s safety in the state,” he said.

Have doctors in India protested before?

Roy explained to Al Jazeera that this case is an overlap of two kinds of violence, the violence against a woman, as well as violence against “an overworked medical professional”.

Doctors in India do not have sufficient workplace security, and attacks on doctors have started protests in India before.

In 2019, two junior doctors were physically assaulted in Kolkata’s Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH) by a mob of people after a 75-year-old patient passed away in the hospital.

Those attacks set off doctors’ protests in Kolkata, and senior doctors in West Bengal offered to resign from their positions to express solidarity with the junior doctors who were attacked.

More than 75 percent of Indian doctors have faced some form of violence, according to a survey by the Indian Medical Association in 2015.

What happens next?

The case will now be handled by the CBI, which sent a team to the hospital premises to inspect the crime scene on Wednesday morning, local media reported.

According to Indian law, the investigation into a case of rape or gang rape is to be completed within two months from the date of lodging of the First Information Report (police complaint), according to Grover, the lawyer.

The highest court in West Bengal, which transferred the case from the local police to the CBI on Tuesday, has directed the central investigating agency to file periodic status reports regarding the progress of the investigation.

The FIR was filed on August 9, which means the investigation is expected to be completed by October 9.

First of all, there have been widespread r umors of a feud between Blake and Justin Baldoni, who starred in and directed the movie.

According to various reports, a power struggle seemingly developed between Blake and Justin during filming, and continued well into post-production.

In fact, the Hollywood Reporter claimed that Blake commissioned her own cut of the film that ultimately went head-to-head with Justin’s vision.

Blake also proudly said that her husband, Ryan Reynolds , wrote one of the key scenes in the film, adding to E! at the New York premiere: “He works on everything I do. I work on everything he does. So his wins, his celebrations are mine and mine are his. He's all over this film.”

This was news to the movie’s credited screenwriter, Christy Hall, who told the Hollywood Reporter at the same event: “As a writer, probably the most difficult scene for me to crack was the rooftop scene. I have to say, Colleen wrote it perfectly. I wish I could have just lifted it from the pages and put it in the film, but it's a little too long for film language."

In a subsequent interview with People , Christy said that she wasn’t aware of Ryan contributing to the scene, and that he may have been behind “a couple of little things” that she’d seen in the final version that she’d thought were improvised during filming.

"There were a few little flourishes that I did not write, but I assumed that they had been improvised on set,” she explained.

Justin also fueled growing speculation that Blake and Ryan had bulldozed him out of the project when he admitted that he wouldn’t be interested in directing a sequel for the movie.

He told Entertainment Tonight : “I think there are better people for that one. I think Blake Lively’s ready to direct. That’s what I think."

And Justin and Blake’s differences didn’t end with the creative process, with people picking up on the hugely contrasting ways that they have approached marketing the movie, which is about domestic violence.

While Justin has been sure to center survivors in his press interviews and focus attention on the complex nature of the storyline, Blake has been accused of dismissing the important themes of the movie with lighthearted quips about her character’s job as a florist and female friendship.

“Grab your friends and wear your florals!” Blake enthusiastically exclaimed in one off-the-mark promotional video for the movie.

In addition, various promotional interviews with Blake have caused a stir, including a recent clip in which she was asked how fans should approach her if they relate to the movie's domestic violence themes on a “deeply personal level.”

Nonchalantly draped over a sofa, Blake sarcastically asked: “Do you mean, like, asking for my address, or my phone number, or location share? I could just location-share you!”

Needless to say, the whole situation has left a bad taste in people’s mouths, with one popular tweet reading : “Whatever is going on with the It Ends With Us drama, it is extremely weird for Blake Lively to turn the promotional tour of a domestic violence drama into a platform for her to strengthen her fashion plate status & her and Ryan Reynolds' power couple clout.”

“Blake lively forgetting her character is a victim of domestic abuse and instead trying to give the entire press run a silly goofy barbie moment while justin baldoni is using his press time to talk about the importance of stopping the cycle of abuse is why I’m always on his side,” another states .

And amid all of this, Norwegian interviewer Kjersti Flaa has uploaded her 2016 interview with Blake that was so “uncomfortable” it made her want to quit her journalism career.

Kjersti posted a video simply called “The Blake Lively interview that made me want to quit my job” to her popular YouTube channel earlier this week, and viewers have been left horrified by the four-minute-long footage.

In the clip, Blake is promoting the Woody Allen movie Café Society , and is joined by her costar Parker Posey . The movie came out in July 2016, and the interview would have taken place at around the same time.

Blake had announced her pregnancy at the Met Gala that May, but appears to take offense when Kjersti starts the interview by congratulating her on her “little bump.”

“Congrats on your little bump,” Blake mockingly retorts to Kjersti, who visibly isn’t pregnant.

Kjersti then comments on how “visually amazing” she found Café Society , which is set in the 1930s — meaning that the costumes are a key part of the production.

“Did you guys love wearing those kind of clothes?” the interviewer asks, and while Parker begins to answer the question, Blake interrupts to say to her costar: “Everyone wants to talk about the clothes, but I wonder if they would ask the men about the clothes?”

“I would,” Kjersti awkwardly replies, but Blake does not acknowledge her and continues to look only at Parker while she pointedly talks about all of the men’s costumes in the film.

Appearing to purposefully exclude Kjersti from the conversation, Blake and Parker go on to use up much of the interview time to have an in-depth conversation about their male costars' outfits.

Blake seemingly actively avoids making eye contact with the reporter, and even when she does look away from Parker, she is looking off-camera rather than at Kjersti.

Once Kjersti's interview time is up, both Blake and Parker appear to roll their eyes and pull a face as she leaves.

“Sitting down with Blake Lively and her co star Parker Posey for Cafe Society (2016) is the most uncomfortable interview situation I have ever experienced,” Kjersti wrote in the video’s caption. “Is it not ok to congratulate someone on their pregnancy or to ask another woman about costumes she is wearing in a film?”

In the comments, she added that she met blake again after this encounter, and while she didn’t give any further details, she did suggest that it wasn’t much better the second time around..

And viewers were decidedly on Kjersti's side, with one popular comment reading: “She and her husband talk about their kids all the time and you can't congratulate her on her pregnancy? That was such weird and uncalled for behavior, Im sorry you had to sit through that. You kept your composure so well.”

“Wow, they’re rude I totally understand that this was an uncomfortable situation to be in. I think most people would have felt the same way. I can literally feel the bad energy through the screen. (and that’s NOT created by you) There’s nothing wrong with your questions at all here,” somebody else wrote.

“Oh wow, those girls were not even addressing the interviewer,” another added. “Good for the interviewer for not getting sucked into their crass behavior.”

“When she immediately pretended to be offended by the clothes question? Insane behavior. Really showing her true colors,” one more wrote.

While another viewer pointed out: “Asking about wardrobe for a period piece movie is a normal question! I’m so sorry they treated you this way.”

The video also made its way over to Reddit , where the consensus was much the same.

“That was so rude and dismissive,” one comment reads. “The way these grown women treated the interviewer was very disrespectful. It felt like I was watching mean high school bullies ignoring another student they were forced to work with. Why wouldn’t Blake face or even address the interviewer?"

Another wrote: “Blake was so instantly defensive, immediately rebuffing the warm compliment from the female interviewer about her public pregnancy and basically calling her fat in return? Gesturing at her stomach and saying, ‘I like your little bump too’, WTF? The mortification I would feel if a celebrity with the kind of physical beauty and social status of Blake Lively basically body-shamed me on camera in response to a gentle, well-intentioned compliment is unimaginable.”

“She had already announced her pregnancy months before this. And costume plays a huge role in period pieces. I’m not understanding the need to be so incredibly rude to the interviewer. Like she barely even looks at her,” somebody else agreed.

While one more commented: “I don’t like the way they’re only talking to each other and not engaging with the journalist, almost acting like she’s not there.”

Blake has not publicly commented on any of the mounting scrutiny that she is facing, but she did post domestic violence helplines to her Instagram story on Tuesday.

So, there’s this fascinating job that I’ve recently learned about, and it’s something that I would absolutely love to do in the future. It’s called a “ wildlife conservationist .”

I first came across this job while watching a documentary series about wildlife and conservation efforts. I was captivated by the work of these conservationists who dedicate their lives to protecting and preserving endangered species and their habitats.

Being a wildlife conservationist requires a unique set of skills and qualifications. Firstly, a deep passion and love for nature and animals are essential. You need to have a strong understanding of ecology and conservation principles, as well as knowledge about the specific species you’re working with.

This job also demands excellent fieldwork and research skills. Conservationists often work in remote and challenging environments, conducting surveys, collecting data, and monitoring wildlife populations. The ‘Orgasm Gap’ Isn’t Going Away for Straight Women

A new study suggests they still have fewer orgasms during sex than men do, even with age and experience.

Sex researchers and therapists have long known that women in heterosexual relationships tend to have fewer orgasms than men do. A large new study suggests that this “orgasm gap” persists — and does not improve with age.

The Numbers

The research, published recently in the journal Sexual Medicine, found that across all ages, men of all sexual orientations reported higher orgasm rates during sex — from 70 to 85 percent — compared with 46 to 58 percent for women. Lesbian and bisexual women between ages 35 and 49 reported higher orgasm rates than their heterosexual counterparts.

The analysis included data from eight Singles in America surveys, which are funded and conducted by Match.com annually in collaboration with The Kinsey Institute, the sexuality and relationships research program at Indiana University. The sample included more than 24,000 single Americans between the ages of 18 and 100.

Researchers were especially interested in the question of whether orgasm rates vary by age. Amanda Gesselman, a research scientist with the Kinsey Institute and lead author on the study, said she thought the team might find evidence that the orgasm gap narrows as women develop confidence and learn what they like (and, perhaps, their partners develop skills to help pleasure them).

However, while older gay and bisexual men and lesbian women did have higher orgasm rates, “we really didn’t see evidence of closing the orgasm gap overall,” she said, adding that she hopes future studies will explore the age-orgasm connection further.

“We really, as a society, sort of prioritize men’s pleasure and undervalue women’s sexual pleasure,” Dr. Gesselman said. “And I think that contributes to consistent disparities.”

The Limitations

Emily Nagoski, a sex educator and author of the book “Come Together” — who did not work on the new study — said a limitation of the study was that the survey asked: “When having sexual intercourse in general, what percentage of the time do you usually have an orgasm?” But it did not provide a more specific definition of what “sexual intercourse” means.

Research shows the majority of women require some form of clitoral stimulation in order to orgasm. So if straight women defined “sexual intercourse” as vaginal penetration alone, it makes sense that there was a significant gap in orgasm rates, she said.

A more revealing question might be, “What percentage of the sex you have do you like?” Dr. Nagoski said. “Orgasm is not the measure of a sexual encounter. Pleasure is the measure of a sexual encounter.”

In India, where the unemployment rate is significantly high, it is pretty arduous to grab a well-paying and decent job. Despite the situation, if I had to talk about one particular position that holds my interest, it would be becoming a marketing manager in a multinational company.

Such a job requires an excellent academic record, preferably in the relevant stream, such as marketing, management, and business administration. Some companies also put forth a condition to hire only those who have completed their MBA degree with a major in marketing. Apart from this, such a job also requires the ability to maintain public relations, make decisions instantly, sharp sense, team-building skills, management skills, marketing skills, and communication skills.

As far as its distinct USPs are concerned, the job of a marketing manager comprises the development and establishment of a brand’s bold presence in the market. In addition to this, the job also demands managing other sales executives while simultaneously impacting the target audience to accomplish the targets.

I will be pretty good at this job, considering the relevant academic qualifications and skills that I hold. Moreover, I have also done various internships in diverse companies. Further, I have researched enough to comprehend how the market works and how executable strategies can be created.

It’s difficult to predict the future as to what job will dominate the labor market , but I’m pretty sure that teaching English as a foreign language stands a good chance of being one of the hottest professions in the upcoming years. And, to be honest, I’m working hard on enhancing my English teaching ability to prepare myself properly for this golden opportunity and become an IELTS examiner down the road.

Teaching English requires patience and perseverance and if you’re an impetuous and bad-tempered person, then this noble profession is not cut out for you. In this job, I will have to get exposed to people of different educational and cultural backgrounds , some of them might be too stubborn to be a good listener or simply they’re too lazy to acquire any knowledge . The two qualities I have mentioned are my strong suit . I have been employed as an English teacher and somehow learned about the art of imparting knowledge and encouraging students to actively participate in the lessons without being fed up with the students, I think this characteristic can be tackled over time and that being not too lenient with the students means I care for them pretty much.

At the moment, teaching social subjects like Literature or History admittedly doesn’t guarantee a lucrative income . Yet it’s not the same for English as it’s an international language and is a prerequisite for international students or those working in multinational corporations. So, l speculate that in the foreseeable future the job as an IELTS examiner will promise a bright future.

Obviously, manual workers receive the lowest income in my country; they work hard physically but with no good pay. Some of these occupations don’t require much brain work and usually include factory workers, street cleaners, or caretakers. Somehow; it is proportional to the efforts and time they spend when they were young.

This is a fascinating question. The discrepancy in income levels generally reflects the degree of happiness a person may feel. If I have to choose, the answer would be no. Instead of job-hopping frequently, it would be better if we reflect on our interests or make greater efforts and determination in what we are doing. This helps us to have an overall picture of our genuine abilities and better adapt to an environment for a longer stay. Another plus point is the promotion prospects are more promising if we set our hearts on staying at the same place because the more we work, the more hands-on experience we gain. This makes us qualified for a pay rise or a good promotion.

It is the season of university open days and study decisions for Year 12 students.

As an academic, the question I get asked most by students and parents is, “will this degree lead to a job?”.

It is understandable. However, it isn’t necessarily the right question to ask as young people consider what course will suit them best.

Focusing solely on immediate job prospects (“degree equals job”) can limit the understanding of what university courses actually provide.

What is a degree for?

A degree isn’t merely a gateway to employment, it’s the foundation for a life of professional and personal development.

Students often begin a university course with a specific career path in mind, only to discover new interests that lead them in unexpected directions.

For example, a student might start a design degree dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, only to find the demands of the industry clash with their introverted nature. Instead, they might discover a passion for sustainable textiles, a field requiring meticulous material research.

Their design degree didn’t lead to one end point, but gave them the opportunities to learn what they were really suited to, and the skills to pursue this.

Not about becoming an expert in one thing

University education is also not just about mastering a subject, it’s about acquiring transferable skills , such as problem solving, communication and the ability to work in diverse situations with diverse people.

It is also about developing critical thinking and the ability to assess evidence. These skills can then be applied to many ideas and issues.

In today’s unpredictable, technology-driven world, new jobs emerge quickly , while others fade away. A university degree should equip students with the adaptability to navigate these changes, rather than simply slotting into existing job categories.

So, instead of asking whether a degree will directly lead to a job, consider these following five questions.

1. What skills will I develop in this program?

Creative degrees, for example, encourage critical thinking, creativity, technical skills, and the ability to articulate and present ideas, skills that are highly valued across many fields.

An arts or health sciences degree may also encourage valuable critical thinking and research skills.

2. Are there opportunities for practical experience?

Look for courses that offer internships, industry projects and practical workshops. These experiences help students build professional networks and gain insights about what they really like (and don’t like) about different types of work.

3. Will the course expose me to diverse cultural contexts?

Consider programs that offer international exchange opportunities. These experiences can be transformative , broadening students’ cultural perspectives and enhancing their sensitivity and awareness to diverse cultural environments. They also cultivate maturity and independence by challenging students to navigate unfamiliar environments with their peers.

4. How does this course encourage resilience and lifelong learning?

Seek out courses that emphasise creativity , experimentation, independent thinking and teach in hands-on learning environments.

Such courses teach students to cope with change – a skill they will need in fast-evolving workplaces. It also prepare students for a lifetime of continuous learning , which is essential for sustained career growth and personal development.

5. What have recent graduates done with this degree?

Exploring the diverse paths of graduates can provide a realistic view of a degree’s possibilities.

On open days, seek out workshops and current students and staff. Ask about further study options – do students in a certain course often need (or want) to do postgraduate study?

And remember

Whatever students choose to study it’s important they do something they are truly interested in. Education can and should be enjoyable.

Joining the infertility community is complicated. Leaving it can be, too

Seven weeks into my pregnancy I said an emotional goodbye to my fertility doctor and favorite nurse, and “graduated” from the clinic to the obstetrician’s office one flight up.

Every time I sat in the well-lit area awaiting my maternal care appointment, I noticed how vastly different this room was from the one downstairs. This new waiting room was filled with anxious anticipation, an excitement that vibrated through the room of women with various-sized bellies, all eager to see black-and-white images of babies who lived inside them. The fertility clinic, where I’d gone for appointments for years, had felt like a conveyor belt of people, overflowing with invisible grief and hope.

After almost six years of disappointment, loss and unsuccessful fertility treatments , I’d finally made it to the coveted fourth floor. It would be one of many notable graduations in my pregnancy.

I didn’t expect to be a member of the infertility club. Fortunately, I quickly found out about all the resources: support groups and meetups and message boards designed for people in my exact situation. After my second miscarriage, and a year before I turned to in vitro fertilization, I joined a group, in person. Months later it turned virtual due to the pandemic.

The free virtual support group, organized by Resolve , was a place of safety and comfort for me. I never missed a meeting and felt more understood by my fellow, female strangers than anyone in my real life. We didn’t know each other outside of the group but our stories, and empathy for one another, bonded us — at least for one night each month.

Over the next three years, I watched the tiny squares of women drop off my screen, gone from the group forever. They didn’t usually announce their departure; they just stopped attending the group. But once, a woman came to the meeting to say goodbye.

“I feel so, so bad for all of you,” she said with tears in her eyes while she announced her good news, and prayed that we would all find our happy endings, too.

Many congratulated her, but for me, the farewell garnered a different reaction — annoyance. I’m sure her words were intended to be hopeful and positive. But her tone of pity and sympathy seemed unfair and misplaced, and made me feel emptier than usual.

I myself almost graduated from the support group a few times. But each time, I lost the pregnancy or had an unsuccessful fertility treatment cycle . Having to rejoin elicited a new level of pain. More new members were welcomed, and also eventually left. All while I remained. I was happy, at times even hopeful seeing their success. But each time, it was a reminder that the group was a transient place, meant to be a stepping stone — whether it ended with parenthood or not — and I was instead static.

By the time I was a veteran of the infertility-treatment process, I’d become jaded. My bright-eyed naivete was gone, along with the excitement that starting a new cycle typically brought. I’d experienced too much. When a “newbie” spoke in the support group about things she was doing to try to improve her egg quality, I privately rolled my eyes.

“Your egg quality ain’t changing unfortunately,” I told the group once. “No matter what the influencers say, that’s just the truth.” I realized that, as valuable as the group was, and even though I wasn’t a mom yet, I’d somehow outgrown it.

But I was still a part of the infertility community, and had made some friends. I was particularly close to one woman, and we’d talk frequently. When one of our transfers failed, or an IVF cycle got interrupted by any number of things, we turned to each other.

Initially, our bond was borne out of shared misfortunes, and nurtured by our compassion for those similarities. Though our friendship eventually extended beyond our fertility stories to lunches, hair appointments and even a painting class, our shared struggles were its foundation.

Then, one of my many embryo transfers finally worked, and I was pregnant. What had intertwined our lives now distanced them.

“Don’t feel like you can’t tell me stuff,” my friend declared, when I told her the news at my seven-week mark, even then with some hesitation. Despite her insistence nothing would change, I knew it likely would.

At 10 weeks, I was still pregnant. When my fertility doctor said, “This is the last time I’ll officially see you,” I cried, feeling more optimistic than ever before.

At my 18-week appointment, which included an anatomy ultrasound, I breathed a sigh of relief so deep it shook my whole body. It was the milestone I’d been waiting for, the farthest I’d ever gotten in a pregnancy. I knew in my heart that this time it was really happening.

Pregnancy after infertility, or loss, can be filled with anxiety, ambivalent emotion and even guilt. But, as I learned, there are few resources to help navigate the nuanced transition.

Infertility had been part of my social and personal identity for so long, and closing that difficult chapter of my life was all I wanted. When my time came, I was overjoyed. But hidden deep beneath my elation, a residue of grief remained for the community I was finally leaving behind.

Graduating from the infertility community requires a certain level of emotional flexibility. I reached the other side but knew far too well what it took to get there. My battles had culminated with the miracle of a new baby on the way. But the scars of my experiences wouldn’t disappear so easily. They weren’t only a part of me, but a memory of what we all went through. I had perspective now. It was how I knew that unintentional shifts in friendship were often a consequence of new life milestones.

My friend and I didn’t see each other at all over the next nine months. Throughout my pregnancy I suggested meetups and coffee dates, and while I was never outright rejected, it didn’t lead to anything. As much as it hurt, I’d been on the other side and created my own distance too many times to push now. I knew space and understanding were required.

In many Facebook infertility groups, a frequently used phrase at the beginning of a post is “trigger warning.” It’s used not just for difficult or traumatic stories, but as a precursor to happy ones as well. This sensitivity has led to intense debates between those who want to see baby news and find it positive or hopeful, and others who find it too difficult to handle.

But I’ve seen less discussion about how to navigate this sensitive terrain as the pregnant person, when you’re the person delivering, not receiving, the news. I wasn’t sure how to handle this new situation I found myself in.

I dreamt of having a baby, and struggled to become a parent. Though I’m ecstatic to have made it to my destination, I’ll continue to hold space and sensitivity for those still on the journey, no matter where it takes them.

Recently I finally met up with my friend — our first time seeing each other in 10 months. We laughed, hugged, and she met my daughter. Our lives had veered off course from each other, but there was comfort in knowing we could still come together over a cup of coffee. I told her I was there for her, whenever she needed to talk about anything. She may not choose to do so, but I’ll always make sure she knows.

Why people have fallen out of love with dating apps

Tinder and Bumble are struggling as singles refuse to pay up

W hen Tinder , a mobile dating app, launched on college campuses in America in 2012, it quickly became a hit. Although online dating had been around since Match.com, a website for lonely hearts, launched in 1995, it had long struggled to shed an image of desperation. But Tinder, by letting users sift through photos of countless potential dates with a simple swipe, made it easy and fun.

Soon Tinder and its rivals had transformed courtship. A report published last year by the Pew Research Centre found that 30% of American adults had used an online dating service, including more than half of those aged between 18 and 29. One in five couples of that age had met through such a service. Usage surged during the pandemic, as lonely locked-down singles sought out partners. The market capitalisation of Bumble, a rival to Tinder, surged to $13bn on its first day of trading in February 2021. Later that year the value of Match Group, which owns Tinder, Hinge and scores of other dating services, reached nearly $50bn. Today roughly 350m people around the world have a dating app on their phone, up from 250m in 2018, according to Business of Apps, a research firm. In June Tokyo’s government even said it would launch a matchmaking app of its own to pair up singles in the city.

Yet lately online dating has lost its spark. The apps were downloaded 237m times globally last year, down from 287m in 2020. According to Sensor Tower, another research firm, the number of people who use them at least once a month has dwindled from 154m in 2021 to 137m in the second quarter of this year (see chart 1). On August 7th Bumble reported revenue growth of just 3%, year on year, in the quarter from April to June, and lowered its forecast for the full year to 1-2%. Its shares plunged by a third in after-hours trading. On July 30th Match Group reported that its revenue for the same quarter grew by only 4%. Both companies’ market values have cratered since Bumble’s listing (see chart 2). That reflects users’ increasing disillusionment with dating apps, decreasing willingness to pay for them—and growing interest in offline alternatives.

Start with the disillusionment. Apps that once felt fun have, for many, become wellsprings of frustration. The network effects that initially propelled services such as Tinder, in which a widening choice of partners lured in ever more users, have now made them exasperating. Users grumble about spending hours sorting through tens of thousands of profiles. Half of women surveyed by Pew said they felt overwhelmed by the number of messages they received. It doesn’t help that 84% of Tinder users are men. So are 61% of those on Bumble, which is targeted at women. Many users also fret about scams.

Younger adults are growing especially weary of the apps. One survey commissioned last year by Axios, a news site, found that only a fifth of American college students were using them at least once a month. “It’s not fun, it’s so superficial and it’s also just like really exhausting,” laments one youthful influencer on TikTok, a short-video app. “I’m kind of over it,” sums up Wunmi Williams, a 27-year-old who, after years of swiping and matching, has been unable to find a partner through a dating app. In a sign of growing despair, the Marriage Pact, an annual event in which participants are matched with a “backup” spouse should their future romantic endeavours fail, has spread to 88 college campuses across America.

All this helps explain why dating-app developers are struggling to convince users to part with cash—the second reason for their lacklustre performance. In an effort to boost margins, dating apps have been peddling paid upgrades to supplement their lowly ad revenues. Hinge has a separate feed with popular profiles it thinks you might like, but demands that you hand over $3.99 for a “rose” before you can chat with them. Tinder’s paid plans range from $17.99 a month (which gives you unlimited swipes and lets you change your location) to a hefty $499 a month (which lets you see the most popular profiles on the app and message users you haven’t matched with).

Got the ick

Online dating may no longer look desperate, but users seem to worry that paying for it might. The share of people who are willing to spend money on dating apps has been falling. Tinder’s paid users have declined for seven consecutive quarters. Men are more likely to cough up, which may be worsening the feeling common among women of being bombarded by messages on the apps.

Perhaps the biggest threat to the future of dating apps, though, is the growing share of singles looking offline for love. Last year some began wearing an aqua-coloured ring, made by a startup called Pear, to show their openness to being wooed. Thursday, a company that organises in-person events for singles, has expanded its service to roughly 30 cities, from Stockholm to Sydney. Its app works only on Thursday, when the events are held.

The romance is not confined to bars. Running clubs have become a place for athletic types to meet. Cooking classes, too, have become a place to look for partners, says Julia Hartz, the boss of Eventbrite, a ticketing platform. Attendance at its singles events rose 42% between 2022 and 2023. “You are bonding with someone, you’re having an experience, even if they’re not the love of your life,” says Casey Lewis, a blogger on youth culture, of such events.

Dating apps are looking for ways to lure users back. Some are hoping to spice things up with artificial intelligence ( AI ). Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble’s founder, recently mused that the future of courtship could involve one person’s AI bot going on “dates” with another’s. One new app, Volar, has begun offering just that.

In time, society might be willing to leave matchmaking to machines—but it is hard to imagine the strategy paying off just yet. A more fruitful approach for dating apps may instead be to focus on narrower markets. Grindr, an app for gay men, continues to grow quickly. So does Feeld, which targets the polyamorous. In the past few years Match Group has launched apps targeted at gay men (Archer), single parents (Stir), ethnic minorities ( BLK , Chispa) and snobs (The League). Revenue from this portfolio of brands grew by 17%, year on year, in the second quarter of 2024.

In addition to offering a smaller pool of partners, such apps also serve as a community for like-minded people. Grindr, for example, acts as a travel guide for tourists looking for gay bars and a hub for information on HIV . The company says its average user sends 50 messages a day, about the same as for WhatsApp, a messaging service. Its success in that regard might explain why Lidiane Jones, the chief executive of Bumble, has said she wants her firm to be known as a “connections company, rather than a dating company”. Pulling off such a rebrand may prove tricky. But love has never been an easy business. ■
