Graduate Admissions

Human resources management, master of human resources management.

The executive-style MHRM is designed to provide professional HRM specialists with the skills and credentials necessary to become senior-level professionals. Offered on a full-time or part-time basis, the MHRM program was developed to work around a busy schedule.

In addition to classroom seminars, you will have the option of rounding out your studies with an independent research paper developed under the guidance of one of our world-class professors. The program will help you acquire the competencies, recognition and status that a graduate degree brings, and prepare you to take on a leadership role in this expanding and exciting field.

PhD in Human Resources Management

York's PhD is distinguished by its diverse methodological approach to research and emphasis on pedagogical training. It contributes to the growth of HRM as a unique discipline, while acknowledging its interdisciplinary foundations.

Students completing the York PhD in HRM program will have a distinct advantage over similar graduates from other schools in North America. In addition to knowledge and expertise in quantitative research methods, students will gain exposure and training in alternative methods that critically evaluate the ontological assumptions and epistemological approaches of much of current HRM scholarship. While positivist approaches continue to dominate research activity in HRM, there is an increasingly important role for qualitative research methods, located in an interpretivist paradigm. Faculty associated with the PhD program in HRM have extensive expertise in both positivist and interpretivist research. Furthermore, this expertise covers many bases within interpretivism itself. This breadth and diversity of training is not typically available in most institutions in Canada.

Students will also receive more rigorous training in university teaching and pedagogy compared to what most other programs offer. For years, there has been a growing emphasis on the need to produce high quality teachers as well as high quality researchers and HRM professionals. While almost all Ph.D. programs recognize the value of excellent teaching, few programs actually incorporate pedagogical training into their courses. Given the belief in the value of generating excellence in teaching and research, this program makes pedagogical training a requirement.

Field courses, organizational behaviour and human resources (obhr).

Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources (OBHR) focuses on the understanding and management of behaviour in the workplace. Students develop a deep appreciation for the research and insight of subjects dealing with the “human” side of work, such as individual-level topics (e.g., recruitment, selection, job analysis, training and development, learning, motivation, performance), relational topics (e.g., relationships between individuals at work, mentors-protégés, leaders-followers, teamwork, conflict management, diversity, equity) and organizational-level topics (e.g., organizational learning, change management, compensation systems, industrial relations) as well as topics from complementary disciplines such as psychology and sociology.

Here is a list of our current faculty members. We encourage all potential applicants to visit our homepages to learn more about the research we are conducting. Google Scholar and other databases (e.g., ABI/INFORM, PsychINFO) are also excellent ways to learn about our publications. We also encourage applicants to contact us personally so that we can ensure the best possible fit for our common research interests.

Halifax brewery facing lawsuit for allegedly botching 59,000 cans of beer

Good robot says n.b. company was involved in every step of the process.

hrm phd in canada

Social Sharing

A New Brunswick beverage business is accusing a Halifax brewery of screwing up the recipe for tens of thousands of cans of beer and jeopardizing the company's future, according to court documents.

Lawyers for Think Fermentation, which operates as Think Brewing, said in a statement of claim filed in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in April that the company entered into an agreement with Halifax's Wrought Iron Brewing Company, which operates as Good Robot Brewing, in January 2023.

The Moncton-based company claims Good Robot was supposed to produce and package 59,000 cans of beer involving five different flavours as part of a first batch, according to the documents.

  • N.S. is offering land for affordable housing. Some say there is a catch
  • Weather Heat wave set to peak Wednesday and Thursday in Nova Scotia

The deal was supposed to help "reinvigorate" Think Brewing, which was purchased in 2022 by a new owner who wanted to restructure the company to sell and produce more alcoholic beverages but did not have brewing facilities, the documents said.

"Good Robot was aware that Think's plans for a successful relaunch depended on the batch of beer being identical to what had previously been sold at NB Liquor outlets," the statement of claim said.

Think Brewing claims Good Robot failed to follow product specifications, recipes and ingredients, resulting in a beer that differed from its previous product — and losses of around $150,000, the documents said.

Good Robot claims it's owed over $25K

In a statement of defence filed last week, lawyers for Good Robot said the brewery followed specific instructions agreed upon before brewing began and representatives of Think Brewing were involved in every step of production and packaging.

Think Brewing agreed to changes in specifications in order to scale production to Good Robot's facility, according to the statement. The documents said these types of adjustments are common in the brewing industry.

The Halifax brewery "specifically denies" the quantity of beer involved in the first batch and that all beers being brewed had previously been sold at New Brunswick liquor stores, according to the documents. The statement of defence said total production in the first batch was 46,728 cans.

Four cans of beer are displayed outside.

Think Brewing owes Good Robot thousands of dollars as part of the initial agreement between the two companies, according to a counterclaim filed by the Halifax brewery on the same day as the statement of defence.

Good Robot alleges Think Brewing is still liable for at least $25,000 to cover the costs of production and packaging, the counterclaim said, as well as costs related to things such as increased labour due to improper labelling, packaging, shipping insurance and storage fees.

Think Brewing has not picked up the finished first batch, which remains at Good Robot's facility, the documents said.

Good Robot's plan to brew for others

The lawsuit against Good Robot comes after the company has tried to increase production, including contract brewing or making beer for other breweries .

The company moved its brewing operations from its Robie Street facility in north-end Halifax to a location in Elmsdale, N.S., a few years ago to allow for more production.

Management said the move was to "future-proof," after Good Robot had to lay off most of its staff when the pandemic arrived .

Lawyers for both companies did not respond to requests for comment by publication time.

HMCS Charlottetown deploys to become flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2

From: National Defence

News release

Today, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Charlottetown departed Halifax, Nova Scotia, to join and assume flagship duties of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) as part of Operation REASSURANCE in the Mediterranean Sea

June 15, 2024 - Halifax - National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces

Today, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS)  Charlottetown  departed Halifax, Nova Scotia, to join and assume flagship duties of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) as part of Operation REASSURANCE in the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the next six months, HMCS Charlottetown will execute missions and participate in international exercises in support of regional maritime security in the Mediterranean. The Royal Canadian Navy’s involvement in SNMG2 demonstrates Canada’s continued participation in NATO and strengthens military cooperation with our allies and partners in the region.

This iteration of Canadian participation in SNMG2 coincides with the 75 th anniversary of NATO and the 10 th anniversary of Operation REASSURANCE. As one of the twelve founding members of NATO, Canada has consistently been instrumental in trans-Atlantic defence, and since 2014, Canada has been a key partner in the defence of NATO’s Eastern flank.

“As a founding member of NATO, Canada is steadfastly committed to Euro-Atlantic security – and that is why we regularly deploy Royal Canadian Navy warships to sail under the NATO flag. I am especially proud that HMCS Charlottetown will soon be the flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2, which is a testament to the confidence that our Allies have in Canada’s Navy. To the ship’s company: thank you for your service to Canada. I wish you fair winds and following seas.” The Honorable Bill Blair, Minister of Defence
“I am incredibly proud of the crew of HMCS Charlottetown, who worked tirelessly the past few months and are now in all respects ready for their unique deployment as Flagship for Standing NATO Maritime Group 2. An operation of this magnitude is a significant commitment for the Royal Canadian Navy and demonstrates our ability to adapt to evolving operational environments while assuming leadership at sea. HMCS Charlottetown , you are the forefront of that commitment, and we look forward to witnessing your success throughout your mission. Fair winds!” Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic

Quick facts

SNMG2 is one of four Standing Naval Forces that operate under NATO Allied Maritime Command. These groups provide NATO with a continuous maritime capability for operations and other activities in peacetime and in periods of crisis and conflict. They help to establish alliance presence and deterrence, demonstrate solidarity, conduct routine diplomatic visits to different countries, support transformation and NATO interoperability, and provide a variety of maritime military capabilities to ongoing missions.

HMCS Charlottetown’s deployment under Operation REASSURANCE supports the military activities undertaken by the CAF to support NATO assurance and deterrence measures. Through training, exercises, demonstrations, and other assigned NATO tasks, Canada demonstrates its commitment to security and stability in the region.

HMCS Charlottetown is a Halifax-class frigate. Halifax-class frigates have a crew of approximately 240 including Royal Canadian Navy sailors and Royal Canadian Air Force aviators to fly and support the ship’s embarked CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopter.
