Assistant Principal cover letter example

Assistant Principal cover letter example

Assistant principals are well on their way to getting the big job, so their cover letters need to convey a sense of momentum and achievement, without coming across as overbearing. The best assistant principal cover letter will describe how you are humble and keen to learn.

While their responsibilities will vary wildly from school to school, the content of the cover letter should be tailored to the exact demands of each post. While this may seem like a lot of work, every cover letter should be written with a specific school (and even principal) in mind. Principals tend to share a lot with the world, so getting a sense of the school’s ethos has never been easier. Try to mirror this ethos in your cover letter.

Your cover letter should convey a sense of how you go about your school duties. It is less factual than a resume, so you have license to go into a little more detail about your leadership ethos. Hundreds of teachers and students depend on your approach – why are your more effective than any other education leader?

When an assistant principal role is specific to the education industry, it may be worth looking further afield for inspiration from other leaders. Our library of cover letter examples is filled with excellent variations on the leadership theme. Have a good think before you sit down to write your assistant principal cover letter. How can you make your application stand out? In this guide and the corresponding assistant principal cover letter example, we cover:

  • How to find a format that will help to frame your story
  • Which parts of your assistant principal career story to share
  • How to write the cover letter if you have no management experience
  • Mistakes to avoid in the cover letter if you want an interview invite

Best format for an assistant principal cover letter

Just as a report card should be written in a certain way, there are certain expectations for an assistant principal cover letter. While your content should be as unique as possible, you should not deviate from the norm in terms of how you set out the letter. You don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons, so don’t reinvent the wheel. The typical format of every assistant principal cover letter looks like this:

  • The cover letter header
  • The greeting/salutation
  • The cover letter intro
  • The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
  • The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and call-to-action)

School correspondence is often somewhat formal, so the tone of the cover letter should follow suit. Have a look at how the job description has been written. The language on the school website may also offer some insights. Imagine you’re talking to the principal and then add in an extra layer of formality. There is nothing worse than a leader who seeks to ingratiate themselves with the team from day one. Maintain a certain distance to start with.

Assistant principals will also know the importance of how they present information. Our comprehensive cover letter guide details some more subtle considerations about cover letter writing such as which fonts to choose and how visuals may impact a hiring manager.

Our assistant principal cover letter sample may offer some inspiration:

Dear Principal Walker,

During my career as an assistant principal, I have worked in both elementary and secondary schools, from 250 to 700 students. I enjoy supporting the vision of a progressive principal and have a track record of delivering on ambitious projects.

I have supervised from 25 to 65 teaching staff, led the improvement of educational programs, supported individual students with special needs, and managed admin teams. My staff evaluation process was copied by three other school districts and our school was designated a center of excellence for teaching progression thanks to my training modules.

In terms of curriculum development, I have overseen two major changes in subject provision over my career, increasing the range of subjects taught in one school by 15% and modifying the internal examination system for another. Both resulted in greater student engagement and significant improvements in educational outcomes.

My most recent project of note was developing a student mentoring service that was used by 70% of the school. I know that increasing student participation is important for Jefferson High, so I am interested to discuss how this might work with you. Extra-curricular attendance increased by 35%. When you give young people responsibility for one another, they rise to the challenge.

I hope to have the opportunity of an interview to find out more about your strategic plans for the next few years. I feel that I might be in a position to help.

Faye Barton

Cover letter header

Cover letters are about the visuals as well as the content, so opt for a professional and sleek cover letter header with minimal additional colors or flourishes. Share your full name, address, and email details so that the principal can invite you to an interview the moment they decide. Your cover letter will be read after the resume, so don’t omit these vital details.

While there is no requirement to write your full home address (there are data protection issues here), writing the inside address of the school is still required in formal correspondence. This would not be our advice for most professions, but for an assistant principal who knows the address of the school, it is recommended and not so hard to do.

Cover letter greeting

Assistant principals should be used to formal writing, so they will automatically greet their principal correctly. “Dear Principal Surname” is likely to be the most common salutation in a school setting. The name of the principal will either be on the school website or on the job posting.

In a bigger school, the name on the job description may well be someone from the HR department but do your best to address it to the principal as they will be the ultimate decision-makers. Avoid the cold “to whom it may concern” if possible.

Cover letter introduction

The introduction of an assistant principal cover letter should get straight into your impact on the school, your management of the staff, or leadership in teaching initiatives or pastoral care. Your accomplishments should be quantified and contain as much context as possible – do not simply mirror the duties listed within the job description.

What you share will depend on your level of experience. If the job is more strategy-led, share the bigger picture achievements. If you have done a lot of work helping your colleagues, lead with some of your teacher development. Assistant principal roles are varied – depending on the size of the school, so think carefully about what might grab the attention.

Cover letter middle part (body)

The middle part of an assistant principal cover letter needs to focus on their academic and management credentials. What results have your previous schools achieved through your leadership? How have you developed the teacher that reported to you?

Pick out the top 3-4 aspects of the job description and write a sentence about each of them. Every school will have different challenges, so don’t assume that your past successes will always be a perfect fit for your future activity.

While there should be a good deal of education-specific content, don’t allow the assistant principal cover letter to become too dry. You will be working closely with the principal, and they will be the one making the hiring decision, so make sure that you share some of your personality. While you may know them by reputation, don’t try to be someone that you are not. Tell a faithful story of what you are like to work with.

Most importantly, the cover letter should be packed with context and quantifiable achievement. Simply mirroring the job description will not do. Show that you value results and tell the story of how you got there.

Every school will likely have a piece of software called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to help them handle the volume of applications that come through for each role.

While there may not be such a high number of assistant principal applications, you will still need to pass this hurdle. It may be that some schools as the ATS to filter applications by keywords, so make sure that you include enough of the language in the job description to avoid falling through the gaps.

One of the enemies of educators is verbosity. Talking too much when students could be working things out for themselves is a cardinal sin. In this light, is your cover letter as succinct as it could be? Less is more when you are trying to impress.

Check out our assistant principal cover letter sample for ideas:

How to close an assistant principal cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)

The conclusion of an assistant principal cover letter should end with one last mention of your students. They are why you go to work every day. While your job may seem somewhat removed from the average classroom teacher, their success is your success.

End the letter by mentioning that you are keen to find out more about the role at a potential interview. Every assistant principal role will be different, so this curiosity is perfectly normal. Don’t be presumptuous about the certainty of getting an interview – write in hope rather than expectation. This call to action should prompt the hiring manager to react.

Assistant principal cover letter with no experience

Not every assistant principal applicant will have been an assistant principal previously. Do not let this lack of experience deter you from applying! It is likely that you have had a wealth of informal management experience under your belt. The cover letter is your chance to explore just why you would be a perfect choice. If you feel that you are lacking experience, the following may help your cause:

  • Share why your previous management experience is relevant.
  • Demonstrate that you have the interpersonal skills to be successful.
  • Tell a story of your progression into positions of responsibility.
  • Share your motivations around why you wish to be an assistant principal.

Assistant principals should be consummate communicators, so the main consideration when you do not have specific experience is to write a convincing cover letter. Securing yourself an interview is the goal here. Then you have the chance to expand on your sales pitch.

Basic mistakes in an assistant principal application letter (and how to avoid them)

Every piece of writing that you send out to both students and parents will be scrutinized. Your attention to detail should be top-notch. Avoid these cover letter mistakes.

  • Spelling and grammar skills may not be your greatest strength, so use an online checker such as Grammarly and ask a friend or colleague to proofread.
  • Don’t just parrot the role responsibilities. The principal knows what the job entails. They want to understand the detail of why you think you are a great fit.
  • Be suitably formal. While your everyday interactions with the principal may be relatively informal, the cover letter should err on the formal side.

First name basis

Key takeaways

  • The letter should share a mix of academic, leadership, and personal stories
  • Make sure that the cover letter matches up with the demands of the job description.
  • Share your personality – the principal will be working closely with you.
  • Choose an attractive design with our cover letter templates.

An assistant principal plays an important role in an educational setting, assisting the principal with key administrative functions while also handling disciplinary and staff management matters. Cover letters for assistant principal roles and letters of intent for assistant principal roles should highlight experience, educational philosophy and key career achievements, as well as speak to the specifics of the job description listing.

Experience and Expertise

Experience and expertise are two key factors that hiring managers look for when culling letters of intent from assistant principals. A cover letter for a vice principal position should launch with an encapsulation of skills you bring to the job with a focus on key attributes. For example:

During the past 10 years, I have served in two assistant principals jobs, and in each, developed comprehensive restructuring of grading policies, introduced new school-wide computer accessibility programs and developed a robust fundraising initiative to boost a fledgling athletic program. I pride myself on developing comprehensive goals and objectives for the position, in accordance with school board strategy and direction.

Measurable Objectives

School boards like to see the metrics assistant principals bring to the role. A deputy principal application example should continue with details about the measurable achievements you have attained in previous roles. if you've won awards, received school board or superintendent commendations, make note of it here. Example :

During my tenure at my last school, I reduced absenteeism by 15 percent, improved standardized test scores by nearly 20 percent, and buoyed participation on our parent-teacher association by more than doubling the existing group size. I was recognized as Administrator of the Year by the Hocking County School Board in 2018 for my efforts and contributions.

Core Strengths "> Core Strengths

Assistant principals are often the disciplinarians in a school, ensuring that school polices and procedures are followed. They serve in a management capacity when the principal is absent, and often oversee key areas of operations or divisions, such as athletics, special education or clubs and councils. Highlight oversight responsibilities to demonstrate capabilities in these areas. In particular, reflect the verbiage in the job description to better your chances. Example:

As noted in the job listing, I have extensive experience in administrative oversight, and in my last role, assisted in revamping our internal code of student conduct. I also strive to be available and open with students and parents. I have found that overseeing clubs and councils is an exceptional way to get to know students and families, which helps us all work together as team members supporting student education.

Management Philosophy

While an assistant principal role is a management position in and of itself, it also serves as a support role for the principal. This often means hiring, training and supervising teaching staff and ensuring all school rules and regulations are enforced. As such, it’s wise to touch on both educational philosophy as well as support capabilities. For example:

I have a strong dedication to supporting and enforcing school policy, upholding directives of the principal and striving to provide a safe and enriching environment for all students. I strive to create a cohesive team environment for all staffers to ensure top performance, as well as encourage professional development.

Close the letter by reiterating your specific interest in the job and noting attachments such as, letters of recommendation, educational credentials, training certificates or other key documents.

Must Read: How to Get Your Cover Letter Noticed by Employers

The cover letter is kind of a test for you. It tests to see whether you can craft a compelling narrative about yourself. By testing your cover letter writing abilities, the company is trying to assess whether or not you would be able to craft compelling narratives on behalf of that company in the future.

Many companies will let you optionally attach a cover letter along with your application. If you take this as a challenge for yourself and do so, it will showcase your firm commitment to the company, and allows you to tell a story about yourself as a leader and as a collaborator. A solid cover letter will leave a long-lasting impression in the recruiters mind and will help make you stand out from other candidates.

And here's the most important reason of all: the process involved is more important than the output. When you get into the cover letter writing process, you're compelled to figure out the story about yourself, and how you are the best solution for the company's pain.

You're advised to conduct pre-interview research about the company so that you know exactly what you're meant to tackle, and you know exactly how to position yourself throughout the interview. Once you've written your Vice Principal cover letter, you'll have a mental reference point about how you want to talk about yourself across all of your interviews, and that's incredibly valuable!

Must Read: Things you need to know before start writing a Cover Letter

Structure of the Vice Principal cover letter

The most effective and impact making cover letters consists of three core parts.

The first part is the introduction. The first paragraph should include the following key details: which company you're applying to, what role you're applying to, and a summary of how you will add value to the company.

Many cover letters fail to mention either the job title or the name of the company. This provides a clear indication to the employer that you're using the same cover letter for many companies, which further indicates that you aren't serious enough or you don't care enough about making a good impression. If this is the case, it's better to not write a cover letter at all! And, always make sure you're sending the right cover letter to the right company.

Most of the time, applicants take advantage of cover letter examples or cover letter samples , and forget to clean it up. You need to ensure that you've put in all the hard work in personalization of your cover letter - be professional!

It shouldn't really be about you - rather, it should be about how you're excited about what the company is doing, and about how you're the perfect fit to solve their needs. And if you feel that you can't directly address the job requirements on the company website, you may need to consider applying for a different role instead.

The second part is the narrative. The second paragraph includes your story where you tell about yourself, and where you showcase that your past experiences have made you capable enough to be the best suited candidate available for that specific position.

Use it to address questions that might come up in an interview, such as “what was your proudest moment”, “how did you overcome failure”, and “tell us about a time when you took an initiative from start to end successfully.”

Always remember to customize your cover letter to the specific employer and the specific role that you're applying for rather than using a standard one for all which lands in the bin.

Finally, the last part is the conclusion. In the last & closing paragraph, summarize what value addition you'll bring to the company and why you're the perfect fit for the specific role. Express your excitement about being a part of the team in the near future. Remind them that they should reach out to you to schedule an interview so that they can learn more about how you're the best person to solve their problems.

With a cover letter created with the above structure, you're definitely gonna leave a solid impression that will grab the attention of hiring managers which significantly increases your chances of getting a job interview.

Must Read: Tips for Customizing your Cover Letter

Before you write a single word of your cover letter, you must first prepare your thoughts and pen down on a blank paper.

Ask questions to yourself like: What are your strengths? Where do you stand as a Vice Principal? Which of your work experiences is the best so far for the companies you've worked with?

Similarly, conduct research on the company . What is their product, their competitors, their mission, and what is their culture? What problem statement are they trying to solve with the Vice Principal role that you're applying to?

So now you must be having 2 stories - one for you and the other of the company. Write down both the stories on a paper. Review your two stories and your pre-interview research, and use that to hammer out your introduction and your conclusion. !

Now bring the whole thing down to a single page eliminating all the unnecessary and unrequired stuff. When the hiring managers assess your cover letter or your resume, they do not evaluate you on the basis of your sum of your experiences but on the average of your experiences. Hence, try to eliminate or cut out every single irrelevant word you've put in as it's gonna bring down the averages of your experience.

One of the simple ways to make sure that your cover letter stands out from the numerous other candidates' cover letters is to personalize your cover letter which helps you grab the hiring manager's attention. Express your enthusiasm about the job showcasing why you're the perfect fit for that specific role and how excited you are to be the part of the team.

Make use of the job description to which you are applying for which will help you to write a cover letter that clearly demonstrates how your skills, experience, or background make you the best available candidate to be a Vice Principal for the company. You should demonstrate exactly how much you are interested in the organization and the position, showing that you are able to meet the needs of the company.

Don't forget to learn about the organization. Take some time out to peruse the company's website and learn their values, mission, and then incorporate that information in your cover letter. Let the recruiters know how you came across this position and detail how your ideals are in line with the organization's goals and how your plans for your career can benefit their objectives.

Always make sure you only focus on the skills in the cover letter which the organisation demands and have highlighted in their job description. Specifically, the ones that are listed as being required separately, do not forget to put them in. Give a brief on these skills by offering concrete examples of how you are using or have used them with any success story(if any).

Proofreading & Iterating - Once you're finished writing your cover letter, edit your cover letter and ask for the feedback from your friend or of you have any consultant/mentor, and repeat this process until you and your reviewer agree and are satisfied that you are the best fit for the job from all other candidates that are applying. Learn to use grammarly .

Key points to remember - don't worry too much about the salutation or the greeting. It doesn't matter whether you use "dear sir or madam" or "dear hiring manager" or "to whomsoever it may concern" - the ultimate goal is to demonstrate that you're the stand out candidate out of everyone who's applying for that job posting. Just focus on the core value that you're bringing to the company! If you experience difficulty in composing your cover letter professionally, you can hire an essay writer at CustomWritings to have your cover letter or job application paper written from scratch.

Must Read: Things to remember while sending a Cover Letter

Even with a use of a cover letter sample or template, sometimes it can get even more trickier to make a perfect cover letter. Below listed are some tips to keep in mind when writing your Vice Principal cover letter.

  • Use a proper cover letter format (one-inch margins, line spacing of 1.15, and an 11pt or 12pt classic font).
  • Always have an attractive yet professional cover letter header.
  • Show you're the best for the position and explain why you want to be part of the company and the value you will bring.
  • Always remember to provide your contact information (e.g. phone number and email address), and if possible add a link to your LinkedIn profile which brings more professionalism.
  • Do not add or share other social media links such as Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
  • Always proofread your cover letter before sharing with hiring managers. Double check for any typos or grammatical errors. Spell check is your best friend here! Use grammarly!

Make note of these key points and remember that you're selling yourself to not only the hiring manager but also the company.
