The UCF Online Master of Social Work (MSW) program addresses national and global health, as well as mental health challenges that impact individuals, families, groups and communities. Accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), gain a deeper understanding of how we are all interconnected and how the challenges that affect one segment of our society or world may affect others. You will learn ways to promote positive change for future generations — helping you to succeed in the rewarding field of social work.

A Unique Online Social Work Program Designed for Today’s World

Students in the online MSW program get a hands-on look at social work theory, practice and clinical skills required to address the many challenges in our communities and develop solutions for a better quality of life. Field education internships offer first-hand learning experiences with clients and patients, giving students an opportunity to engage and collaborate with other social work professionals.

Learn from faculty who bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to the classroom. They’ll share the knowledge and tools needed to succeed in the industry, including their own research that covers areas such as mental health, trauma, health, disabilities, sexual trauma, domestic violence, military veterans and families, virtual reality, addictions, infant mental health, child welfare, foster care, community work, among others.

The UCF MSW Online program is a CSWE accredited program with two tracks:

Traditional track.

The traditional track is designed specifically for students who do not have a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or who completed their BSW more than six years ago. This track completes 62-credit hours within a 3-year cohort model for stronger peer support.

Advanced Standing Track

The advanced standing track is designed for students who have earned a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program within the last six years with a GPA of 3.3 in their last 60 credit hours. The track admits only one time a year in the fall semester. This track completes 32-credit hours over four semesters in a cohort model.

Application Deadline

Ready to begin your journey, course requirements.

If you already have a BSW earned within six years of your intended start date, you’ll need to complete 32 credit hours to earn your MSW degree. If social work is new to you and you’ll be pursuing the traditional track, you’ll need to complete 62 credit hours beyond your bachelor’s degree.

Number of Core Classes

Based on your qualifications, you can choose from two different tracks. The traditional track is composed of core courses, clinical specialization courses, electives and field experience. The advanced standing track requires clinical specialization courses, electives and field experience. Core class details per track include:

Traditional Track – 21 credit hours of required courses, 18 credit hours of clinical specialization courses and 9 credit hours of elective courses.

Advanced Standing Track – 18 credit hours of required courses along with 6 credit hours of elective courses.

Field experience – required for both tracks and consists of 14 credit hours. Students in traditional track are required to complete a total of 1000 field hours and students in the advanced track are required to complete 600 field hours.

Clinical Social Work Practice with LGBTQ+

Practice with Families

Family-focused models of intervention applied to families in transition and to problems such as divorce, single parenting, and blended families.

Frequently Asked Questions

At this time our program meets the educational eligibility criteria for licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the State of Florida.

We are unable to confirm the licensure and certification requirements of other states not listed above. If you intend to pursue such credentialing in your state or elsewhere, we advise you to contact the applicable state credentialing authority to familiarize yourself with its specific requirements and determine if our program meets its eligibility criteria. You may review state requirements through the Association of Social Work Boards.

You are welcome to contact Shellene Mazany, MSW, LCSW, the Online MSW Program Director, with questions in this regard and we will do our best to assist you in your career planning.

The accredited online Master of Social Work tracks are only available on a part-time basis.

The traditional online Master’s in Social Work track will take 3 years to complete. The Advanced Standing track will take 16 months to complete.

The CSWE accredited online MSW is a 62 credit hour track. The Advanced Standing online Social Work masters degree is a 32 credit hour track.

You are absolutely welcome to visit campus if you wish, but it is not a requirement. Everything is completed online except for your field placement. We attempt to place students within a 45-mile radius of their location, unless you are located in a restricted state.

The traditional online MSW track was created for students who do not have a BSW degree or who earned their BSW more than six years prior to initial enrollment. The Advanced Standing option is for students who have earned a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program within the last six years with a GPA of 3.3 in their last 60 credit hours. This track admits only once a year in the fall semester.

Graduate social work education is both difficult and time consuming. Many of our students maintain employment, but we strongly emphasize that you schedule your time wisely for both your online courses, and for your field placement. In addition, during your field placement, you will be required to complete at least 50% of your hours during business hours (M-F, 8-5pm), so please keep that in mind.

No. Your diploma will state that you earned an Master of Social Work at the University of Central Florida.

The accredited online masters degree in social work is a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree track offered through the University of Central Florida. There are two online options available at this time: Online Part-Time track and Online Part-Time Advanced Standing track.

The online Master of Social Work degree is completed fully online with the exception of in-person field experiences. Your participation is expected and required much like in face-to-face courses. That said, not all students are suited for online learning. The online MSW may not be the right fit for you if:

• You do not have unlimited access to high-speed internet
• You cannot type or type very slowly
• You do not have access or basic knowledge of computer and internet skills including software applications, uploading and downloading documents
• You have difficulty with time-management and/or are unable to commit to 18 hours per week of coursework and an additional 10-15 hours for field placement

The Master of Social Work program at UCF is fully accredited through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

There are two differences between the Online MSW and the Orlando MSW tracks: method of delivery and length of classes. The curriculum content is the same for both options and is regulated by the CSWE through its accreditation standards. While the online Master of Social Work courses are completed entirely online, the Orlando MSW options offer primarily face-to-face courses along with some online courses. Courses in the online program are set an accelerated pace of 7-weeks each. Each semester you will have two 7-week terms in which you will focus on one course at a time. This does not including field seminar classes which last the duration of a semester (14-16 weeks). The Orlando MSW courses last an entire semester (14-16 weeks).

Beginning Fall 2024, the online curricular pathway Welfare of Children & Families , which prepares you to support children, adolescents, and adults, is available as well.

Basics (Social Work) (BASC) Courses

Basc 5300: human oppression – online (3-credit).

 Examines economic, political, social and cultural forces operating at global, national and local levels, which generate and maintain oppression based on race and ethnicity in the United States. Focuses on the oppression of the Black and Latino populations in the United States, highlighting the African-American and Puerto Rican experiences and perspectives. It will provide a framework for analyzing and understanding oppression. A historical perspective will be utilized to explore past and current oppression related to race and color, culture and ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual/emotional orientation and religion. Intercultural, intracultural, psychosocial, social and political responses to oppression will be addressed throughout the course. Required course for students in the M.S.W. program.

BASC 5333: Research I: Research Methods for SW Practice – Online (3-credit)

Basc 5350: analysis of social welfare policy – online (3-credit).

Provides a critical analysis of the historical roots of American social welfare policy, the formulation of policy, and the economic and political determinants of contemporary policy development. Examination and analysis of the inter-relationship between social welfare policy, the service delivery systems, and practice implications for private and public agencies and programs. Also includes the examination of international issues in social welfare policy and social service delivery. Students will analyze and apply the results of policy research relevant to social service delivery; understand and demonstrate policy practice skills in regard to economic, political and organizational systems; use them to influence, formulate, and advocate for policy consistent with social work values, and identify financial, organizational, administrative, and planning processes required to deliver social services. Required course for students in the M.S.W. program.

BASC 5362: HBSE: Macro and Micro Theories – Online (3-credit)

Emphasizes social work's "person in environment" frame of reference from both micro and macro perspectives. Content areas stressed throughout the course include theories and research about the interdependence and impact of social, political, economic, and cultural contexts on societal and individual well-being. Micro content areas include theories related to the biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, small groups and families in transaction with social, economic, political, and cultural contexts and forces. Cultural and ethnic diversity, institutional prejudice, especially racism and sexism, issues of social, economic and political justice and the process of social change as they impact micro and macro systems will be stressed. Values and ethical issues relevant to macro and micro social work will also be considered.

BASC 5390: Macro Foundation Practice – Online (3-credit)

Focus on macro practice foundation knowledge and skills associated with generalist practice in administration, community organizing and policy practice. Explores the history and place of macro methods in the evolution of the social work profession. Students are introduced to the unique language and perspective of macro practice as a capacity building and strength based intervention. Definitions of and ways to analyze communities, organizations and policies. Emphasis is given to strategies and tactics for achieving change in communities, organizations and policies, to improving services for populations at risk, and promoting diversity and distributive justice, including an international context. Particular ethical and value mandates and dilemmas associated with macro practice are identified throughout. Required course for students in the M.S.W. program. One of the two foundation practice courses taken the first semester of the first year of field placement.

BASC 5391: Micro Foundation Practice – Online (3-credit)

Provides a history of and a foundation for micro social work theory and practice emphasizing ecological, strengths and capacity building perspectives. Knowledge, values and skills associated with generalist practice with individuals, families and groups within the context of organizations and communities. Examines the mission of the social work profession and its value and ethical base, including its commitment to diversity, populations-at-risk and social and economic justice. Strategies for helping client-systems will include preparing for practice; developing mutual working agreements; engaging, assessing and formulating goals; implementing interventions; monitoring and evaluating progress; and terminating services. Emphasizes integration of course content with field experience. One of the two foundation practice courses taken the first semester of the first year of field placement. Required course for students in the M.S.W. program.

Field Education (Social Work) (FED) Courses

Weekly in-person hours at designated agency (4-credit).

Teaches students basic skills in social work practice with systems of all sizes including individuals, groups, organizations, and communities. This field experience course provides the foundation for the development of advanced skills in specific social work methods in advanced field experiences.

FED 5301: Field Education Seminar I – Online

This seminar helps students prepare for and make optimum use of their field education experience. Topics include the roles and responsibilities of the student within the agency setting, exploration and development of learning contracts, and the educational assessment of self as a learner in the profession. The seminar is used to identify issues that arise in the field and ways to deal with them.

FED 5352: Field Education Foundation II – (4-credit)

Continues to develop basic skills in social work practice with systems of all sizes, while adding increased emphasis on the students' development of skills in the students' major method. Required course for students in the M.S.W. program.

FED 5302: Field Education Seminar II – Online (1-credit)

This seminar helps students prepare for and make optimum use of their field education experience. Areas of seminar content include such topics as the roles and responsibilities of the student within the agency setting, exploration and development of learning contracts, and the educational assessment of self as a learner in the profession. The seminar identifies issues that arise in the field and ways to deal with them.

IGFP 5353: Advanced Field Education III – Online (4-credit)

Focuses primarily on the student's method concentration, emphasizing preparation for competent, advanced specialized practice.

This seminar helps students prepare for and make optimum use of their field education experience. Areas of seminar content include such topics as the roles and responsibilities of the student, field instructor and faculty advisor, exploration and development of the learning contract, and the educational assessment of self as a learner in the profession.

Individuals, Groups, and Families (Social Work) (IGFP) Courses

Igfp 5301: practice with individuals, groups & families – online (3-credit).

In-depth exploration of the skills of working with individuals, groups, and families. Social work practice with individuals, emphasizes the interdependence between assessment and intervention, the transactional nature of helping, and monitoring and evaluation of practice. Social work practice with groups, focuses on types of groups, leadership, forming and beginning the group, the role of mutual aid and use of program activities. Practice with families give emphasis to the family as a functional unit and the diversity of life style and structure and its capacity to respond to the needs of its members and changing environmental factors.

IGFP 5302: Advanced Practice with IGF: Theoretical Approaches – Online (3-credit)

Overview of theoretical approaches to working with individuals, groups and families. Helps students to think critically about the use of theory in practice, evidence based practice, and ways of learning and knowing, including use of supervision. Introduction to psychodynamic, attachment, cognitive, and behavioral, as well as solution-focused approaches and motivational interviewing. The stages of group development, group dynamics and other content related to social work practice with groups. Theoretical frameworks such as systems, multisystemic and attachment on which family practice approaches are based.

IGFP 5303: Advanced Practice with IGF Across Settings & Populations – Online (3-credit)

Builds upon content in previous IGFP courses about practice with individuals, groups and families within the context of oppression and privilege, while integrating core concepts related to trauma, strengths, resilience, and empowerment. Primary focus on the differential knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in various fields of practice (e.g., health care, schools,and the criminal justice, child protection, substance abuse and mental health systems). Systems of care, interdisciplinary teams, and policies impacting social work within each field of practice, as well as common clinical approaches and other interventions with the populations served in these settings.

IGFP 5345: Clinical Conditions with Children and Adolescents – Online (3-credit)

 Practice course paying equal attention to the values, skills, and knowledge required for social work practice with children, adolescents, and their families. These youth have a range of bio-psychosocial problems related to mental disorders. Students will learn a range of assessment and intervention skills and will become familiar with current psychiatric classification systems, such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Students will demonstrate the ability to access the most recent empirical and practice knowledge, and to develop skills related to work in a variety of mental health settings. Mental disorders will be learned within the context of larger bio-psychosocial systems. Attention is paid to differences based upon such variables as age, gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, and physical ability.

IGFP 5346: Clinical Conditions with Adults and Older Adults – Online (3-credit)

Practice course paying equal attention to the values, skills, and knowledge required for social work practice with adults and older adults who have a range of bio-psychosocial problems related to mental disorders. Students will learn a range of assessment and intervention skills and become familiarized with current psychiatric classification systems, such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Students will demonstrate the ability to access the most recent empirical and practice knowledge and to develop skills related to work in a variety of mental health settings. Research (Social Work) (RSCH) Courses

Rsch 5341: advanced research: program evaluation – online (3-credit).

Development of knowledge, attitudes and skills appropriate to the ongoing critical evaluation of social work practice with systems from diverse populations. Social workers have a responsibility to evaluate their individual practice effectiveness and the effectiveness of interventions used with clients in accord with both the ethical standards articulated in the NASW Code of Ethics as well as the accountability standards required by agencies and other funding sources. Prepares students to integrate evaluation methods into assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of their professional social work practice. Provides students with the knowledge to develop skills for evaluating practice through the use of evaluation designs. Students will learn to employ these designs and to analyze the data drawn from these designs in order to inform professional practice decision-making.

Human Behavior Elective (HBEL) Courses

Hbel 5300: substance abuse 1 – online (3-credit).

Examines the special issues and problems in dealing with alcohol and drug abuse. Focuses on: developing a conceptual framework of drug abuse and addiction; major classifications of drugs; examining high risk populations with an emphasis on their unique problems and needs; integrating knowledge with practice by giving careful consideration to treatment issues such as identification, assessment, referral, therapeutic strategies, treatment modalities and settings; providing information on the role of federal, state, and voluntary organizations which impact on prevention, education and treatment programs. Elective course for Substantive Area: Focused Area of Study on Mental Health and Substance Abuse in Social Work Practice.

Social Work Elective (SWEL) Courses

Swel 5318: child and adol trauma and mh – online (3-credit).

Incorporates the new National Child Traumatic Stress Network core curriculum on child trauma (CCCT). The course conveys the crucial evidence-based concepts, components, and skills designed by the NCTSN to strengthen competency in assessment, referral, and treatment.

Career Outlook with a Bachelor’s in Social Work Degree

Graduates with a Bachelor’s in Social Work are typically employed under a range of job titles, such as adoption social worker, medical social worker, bilingual youth counselor, case manager, classroom counselor, permanency specialist, support counselor in intensive treatment foster care, life coach, youth counselor, and discharge planner. Most individuals need to continue their education to become a licensed social worker and to advance their career in the social services field.

Undergraduate Social Work Curriculum

The online Bachelor’s in Social Work degree program inspires students to be advocates for social change and a more just and equitable society. Designed for career-ready success, the social work curriculum integrates online courses and field training to help students acquire the necessary knowledge, values, and professional norms required for a social services career. 

Students explore our engaging  curriculum  to gain knowledge about human behavior and the social context of the environment, social welfare policy and services, multicultural social work, human diversity, social and economic justice, and social work ethical standards . Upon completion of their online social work courses, graduates are able to employ an evidence-based approach to research findings to guide their decisions in the professional practice of social work . 

In addition, the online coursework equips students to pursue a Master of Social Work or enter one of Touro University Worldwide’s various master’s degree programs .

Fieldwork Placement

The learning experience of fieldwork in diverse settings allows students to practice the appropriate knowledge and skills to promote the well-being of client populations. Previous fieldwork placements have included schools, counseling centers for families, senior centers, and social service charitable organizations.

A Flexible Online Social Work Degree 

With our fully online bachelor’s degree in social work, Touro University Worldwide has created a student-centered, flexible alternative to traditional on-ground degree programs. This program is also well-suited for transfer students who would like to finish their social work degree online. 

Designed to be student-centered, class sizes are intentionally limited and more personal, so you receive more of your professor’s time and can excel in a nurturing academic environment. In addition, we offer our online students access to comprehensive career resources through Career Services . All TUW professors are carefully selected for their credentials and passion as an educator. 

The duration of the B.A. program in Social Work depends on several factors, including the number of credits accepted for transfer and whether or not online students take time off between social work courses. Students who enroll full-time (12 credits per semester for 3 semesters each academic year) can complete the bachelor’s degree in three and half (3.5) years. Students who enroll part-time (6 credits per semester for 3 semesters each academic year) will complete the program in seven (7) years.

Transfer credits: Up to a maximum of 45 semester credits of general education may be transferred and up to 45 semester credits of BSW may be transferred from other BSW programs from a regionally accredited university/college to fulfill the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work program requirements. A minimum of 30 semester credits from the program major courses must be completed at Touro University Worldwide.

CSWE Specialty Accreditation

The Bachelor of Arts in Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation .

Accreditation of a baccalaureate social work program by the Council on Social Work Education’ Commission on Accreditation indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of program quality evaluated through a peer review process. An accredited program has sufficient resources to meet its mission and goals and the Commission on Accreditation has verified that it demonstrates compliance with all sections of the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.

Accreditation applies to all program sites and program delivery methods of an accredited program. Accreditation provides reasonable assurance about the quality of the program and the competence of students graduating from the program.

Program Requirements

Touro University Worldwide’s online Bachelor of Arts in Social Work requires a total of 120 credit hours for completion. The social work curriculum combines online courses with a field internship.

• Major and core requirements (51 credits)
• Electives (24 credits)

Students must meet the prerequisite requirements before taking any of the major program requirements. For this program, students may transfer 45 semester credits of General Education and may also transfer identical course credits from other social work programs (on a case by case basis).

The duration of the program will vary by student. Factors affecting your completion time include the number of transfer credits and time off between courses. Based on the program requirement of 120 semester credits, students may transfer 45 semester credits of General Education and may also transfer identical course credits from other social work programs (on a case by case basis).

Students seeking enrollment in the online Bachelor of Arts in Social Work program must meet one of the following criteria to be considered for admission:

• High school graduate
• Successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) test
• Transfer student from an accredited college or university in good academic standing

Social Service Worker Certificate

Career opportunities, program requirements.

The Social Service Worker certificate is equivalent to the first year of the campus and OL Human Service diploma. All 30 credits from this program ladder into the Human Service diploma.

Professional Development

Not a program student? You can register in all Social Work (SOCW) and Human Services (HUMS) courses except HUMS 1601, Human Service Field Practicum.

Admission Requirements

• Grade 12 or equivalent or mature student status
• English Studies 12/English First Peoples 12 with a minimum of 73% (or equivalent)
• Two letters of reference

Admitted Students

If you are admitted to the program, you must complete a Consent to a Criminal Record Check before you start a practicum placement.

The practicum is 190 hours minimum. It is usually offered part-time, although may be arranged in alternate formats. Practicums are held during three annual placement periods (fall, winter, and summer) and have required pre-requisites and concrete document submission deadlines.

Diploma Program Overview

SELC’s Community Support Worker Social Services Program is for students who want to help build healthy communities, and support marginalized or vulnerable individuals. Students in this program learn vital skills such as interviewing and counselling skills, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. SELC students will also reflect on their own practice through self-exploration, personal growth and development. This program will prepare students to work with indigenous clients in an anti-oppressive environment; indigenous voices are infused throughout the program. Students will learn how to be an advocate for their clients, while promoting self-determination. The goal of this program is to train students to assist individuals who are in need of support for basic activities of daily living, mental health struggles, substance use, domestic violence, and any other concerns and issues that affect the development of the whole person.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students require one of the following.

• TOEFL (paper): 537
• TOEFL (IBT): 75
• Cambridge: FCE
• has successfully reached the Upper Intermediate Level at SELC English Language Centre
• SELC Career College on-site administered English Language Test

Students require ALL of the following:

Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency for domestic students

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and completion of high school studies and/or commencement of post-secondary studies OR have achieved MATURE STUDENT STATUS: 19 years of age, out of secondary school for a minimum of 1 year with program industry experience minimum of 100 hours
