It begins the research upgrades which are unlocked once every 30 minutes (timer begins upon purchasing the previous research upgrade). Some of these research upgrades allow the player to enter the next stage of the Grandmapocalypse and some boost Grandma production. The research upgrades that boost Grandma production are listed below.

Background changes [ ].
Changes from one stage to another can be obtained by the One Mind, Communal Brainsweep and Elder Pact upgrade. Once the Grandmatriarchs are appeased (by activating the Elder Pledge , Elder Covenant or selling all Grandmas), the background will change back to normal, as well as the store icon changing back to the regular grandma, until the Elder Pledge runs out or if you revoke the Elder Covenant.
Since version 1.0393, the store icon for grandmas will change from the regular version to different ones, depending on the state of the Grandmapocalypse.
Hovering over a Grandma in the building section will reveal her name and age. In addition to the various generic "grandma-sounding" names that are included by default, Patreon supporters over a certain tier have the privilege to submit a custom name with will appear highlighted in white while hovering. Patreon-submitted names can be turned off from the options menu, only displaying the generic names from the default list.

Video Game News, Lists & Guides
All hail the new flesh.
One of the most bizarre, twisted, and freakish twists in video games comes from Cookie Clicker . If you’ve heard of Cookie Clicker , it’s because of this infamous event — the Grandmapocalypse. And now that Cookie Clicker is out on Steam , its the perfect time to revisit one of gaming’s most brain-melting moments. This isn’t a standard clicker game, this is an abomination from the old gods. Cookie Clicker has granted us eyes so that we may see .
Cookie Clicker is a legendary clicker game created by the one-man dev team Julien “Orteil” Theinnot. Originally released as a browser game way back in 2013, this memetic game about creating your own cookie empire turned dark and strange thanks to constant updates from the creator, adding bizarre new features until we now have a very fully-featured little game all about clicking a big cookie endlessly.
In Cookie Clicker , you can upgrade your grandma workforce into a fleshy mass of endless baking potential. Here’s how to trigger the grandmapocalypse .
How To Trigger The Grandmapocalypse Event
To begin the end times, you’ll need to fulfill some early steps. Before you can get started, you’ll need to unlock Grandmas — these are a building type that generates cookies automatically.
There are many different grandma types. By upgrading and purchasing 7 different types of Grandmas (like the Farmer, or the Cosmic) you’ll get the Elder achievement, and unlock the next required building — the Bingo Hall / Research Center .
The Bingo Hall / Research Center upgrade unlocks with the Elder achievement, and has the ability to make your Grandmas four times more efficient . The Research Center costs 1 quadrillion cookies to purchase, so it will take a lot of saving and clicking before you’ll be able to finally purchase it.
The Research Center unlocks new upgrades after 30 minutes or so. Save up your cookies, because you’ll need 16 quadrillion cookies to purchase the upgrade required to trigger the Grandmapocalypse event.
Purchase the upgrades in order as they unlock . Each time an upgrade pops up, purchase it and it will take about 30 minutes to unlock another upgrade. The final upgrade, One Mind , costs 16 quadrillion cookies . It also triggers the event, and will completely change your game, giving you disgusting new artwork and a bunch of new features.
What Is The Grandmapocalypse?
The Grandmapocalypse causes a slew of changes to the game. Not all of them are good. Some of them are disgusting. And certain changes are absolutely amazing.
Wrinklers are weird, slimy monstrosities that encircle your cookie and begin syphoning 5% off your Cookies Per Second . You can pop them immediately, or you can let them fill up — once filled, you can pop them for a huge cookie payoff bonus. Basically, there’s no reason to destroy Wrinklers immediately. Let them gorge on cookies, then pop them when they’re ripe for a big reward.
This is when the game gets weird . If the Grandmapocalypse is too disgusting for you, you can turn off the weird stuff in the Settings menu on Steam.
How to trigger the most infamous event in the game. Including all the details you’ll need to get started on the Grandmapocalypse, Wrinklers and Wrath Cookies.
Grandmas are an unique type of building. They have 2 upgrades, normal upgrades that are unlocked by having a certain number of Grandmas (These have rolling pin icons and are not relevant), and synergy upgrades that are unlocked by having fifteen of other buildings (These have Grandma icons).
Continue with the Research and purchase “Communal brainsweep”. 5th – Exotic nuts : Cookie production multiplier +4%.
Continue with the Research and purchase “Elder Pact”.
7th – Arcane sugar : Cookie production multiplier +5%.
Congratulations! You’ve doomed us all.
As you can see, Wrath Cookies can be a bit of a gamble. But the positive effects greatly counterweight the negative ones. Golden Cookies are generally still better, because Clots can hurt quite a bit.
If you’re farming Golden Cookies, you should stop the Grandmapocalypse at Phase 1, since you can get Wrinkler benefits while also getting a pretty high chance of getting Golden Cookies. You should still get to Phase 3 on your first runs to get the Grandmapocalypse Achievements.
Wrath Cookies still count towards your Golden Cookies Clicked, so don’t worry about not making progress towards Golden Cookies Achievements.
If you’re an idler who doesn’t care much about hunting for Golden Cookies, there is no reason not to go all the way to Phase 3.

With the anticipated release of Cookie Clicker on Steam, fans are coming back to the classic browser game now that it's been given a fresh coat of paint, as it were. The game is practically the same as the browser version, but with a few additional upgrades and changes that make it much more of a robust game rather than an idle experience.
RELATED: All You Need To Know Before Starting Cookie Clicker
The Grandma is the second cookie generator that players can buy in Cookie Clicker , right after the Cursor. They aren't exactly powerhouses at the start, but as the game keeps going and players put more and more investment into their elderly cookie makers, they quickly out-produce items all the way up to the Idleverse.
If the player hovers over their Grandma section on the left side of the screen, they will find something oddly humanizing. Each Grandma has her own name, and will sometimes even make comments in the news ticker at the top of the screen.
It's a small detail that doesn't go unnoticed - names like Heinous, Peanut, and Warty are just three of the dozens of possible names given to these cookie producers. There are also Patreon-specific names, but these can be turned off in the menu.
Just like Grandmas in real life, not all Grandmas in Cookie Clicker are the same age. In fact, Grandmas can be anywhere from age 70 all the way past age 100, and every number in between.
The ages of your Grandmas have no effect on their ability to produce cookies . There's nothing quite as hilarious as mousing over your Grandmas and discovering that your first Grandma, Stinky, is still making cookies at the ripe old age of 106.
The Grandmas in the modern iterations of Cookie Clicker are pretty cute, compared to renditions of versions in the past. They are rendered in pixel art and change their costumes depending on what upgrades the player has purchased. In the original version of the game, though, it's a different story.
Grandmas in the original Cookie Clicker had four different versions - Inverted, where their color palette is inverted, Lustful, which gives her glowing white eyes, Skeleton, which of course turns her into a Skeleton, and Kaleidoscope, a psychedelic version of the Grandma. These all appear based on the types of Grandma unlocked and what stage of the Grandmapocalypse the player is on.
Once the Bingo Center/Research Facility is unlocked through Ascension, it can be unlocked early in the game. By owning seven Grandmas, the option to buy a Bingo Center/Research facility opens up, and this should be done as early in a playthrough as possible.
RELATED: Cookie Clicker: Best Upgrades To Prioritize
The Bingo Center/Research Facility is key to unlocking special upgrades that fundamentally upgrade your cookie production across the board. It also grants access to certain upgrades that can't be attained any other way.
While they cost a little bit more than a Cursor, and don't produce as much as a Farm, Grandmas should be a player's primary focus until later in the game. Upgrades associated with Grandmas improve cookie production for almost every other item that can be bought , and some upgrades increase their production based solely on the number of Grandmas owned.
They produce one cookie per second by default, but with regular upgrades they quickly cascade into an unstoppable cookie-producing machine that is hard to match with other items.
Theoretically, Grandmas are the best item in the game, even outpacing the Idleverse. The only problem with this is that it's actually impossible to reach the number of Grandmas necessary to outpace the Idleverse thanks to the limits of the game's engine.
However, with careful planning and regular upgrades, Grandmas quickly outproduce Farms, Factories, Shipments, and everything else in their way. They stay cheaper than most other options, too.
The Grandmas have access to the best upgrades throughout a regular playthrough of Cookie Clicker . This is thanks to their variety of Grandma types. Farmer Grandmas for example increase the production of Farms by 1% for every Grandma - at 100 Grandmas owned, this effectively doubles Farm production without having to purchase another upgrade.
RELATED: Cookie Clicker: Tips That Will Have You Rolling In The Dough
There are several special upgrades, like the Script Grannies, that further increase these synergistic bonuses. The Bingo Center/Research Facility allows access to upgrades like One Mind, which further increases the amount Grandmas can produce based on the number of Grandmas owned.
When a player unlocks a new Grandma type, like the Farmer Grandma, the Miner Grandma, or the Witch Grandma, it changes the appearance of some Grandmas standing in their section on the left side of the screen.
While it would appear at first that this means the upgraded bonuses only apply to Grandmas donning the associated outfit, the upgrades apply to all Grandmas. This means that even if a Grandma looks like a Worker Grandma, but the player has unlocked the Altered Grandmas upgrade, all Grandmas will still produce cookies as if they were all Altered.
The Grandmapocalypse is an event that only the most dedicated Cookie Clicker players will ever get to see. The Grandmapocalypse can be triggered by owning the One Mind Bingo Center/Research Facility upgrade, but further Grandmapocalypses can be triggered with the Communal Brainsweep and Elder Pact upgrades too.
The Grandmapocalypse fundamentally changes how the game is played . Some Golden Cookies are replaced with Wrath cookies, Wrinklers will start to spawn, and the Grandmatriarchs will begin to alter the appearance of Grandmas in the Store. The Grandmapocalypse can be ended by making a pact with the Grandmatriarchs, but not after the horror has taken over the game.
Cookie Clicker is available on PC via Steam, or in its original browser-based version
MORE: All Achievements In Cookie Clicker

The information in this page mostly caters to early-game players, i.e. players on their first ascension . For intermediate/advanced players, please see External Resources for guides. This page focuses on providing brief answers to common questions - for in-depth information, refer to the seperate pages or linked guides.
Where can i find help from other players.
If you need help from others, you can join the DashNet Forums Discord server, the official Discord server for Cookie Clicker and other DashNet games and seek help from an active community of players from both mobile and web/steam. or view a plethora of guides. You can also ask for help on the r/cookieclicker subreddit.
No, there is no ending to Cookie Clicker. Some players consider the game completed after all achievements have been unlocked, although others play further after that, striving to bake more and more cookies.
Cookie Clicker is a singleplayer game and it should be played the way that allows the player to have the most fun. However, some of these are not allowed in certain leaderboards . If you are going for a leaderboard position, please check the leaderboard rules first to see whether your playstyle is considered accceptable.
What's the difference between the game on web, steam and mobile.
The web and Steam versions are basically the same game with small differences. Steam includes music, features cloud saving, and its heralds are based on the number of players online (usually 100). Web lacks music, includes ads, and its heralds are locked at 41, but is free.
The android app has less content but is actively being worked on by Orteil who wishes to add all the content from web and Steam to the app. This wiki mainly focuses on content for the web and Steam versions of the game.
As of 2024, there is no Cookie Clicker iOS app by Orteil .
No one knows. Since Orteil has confirmed that there will be no more buildings added, the next update could be a new minigame , possibly the long-awaited Dungeons .
These are commonly used community terms. See here for the full list of terms and what they mean.
Main article: Ascension
It is reccommended to ascend for the first time when the number next to the Legacy button reaches 365 or above after having baked a total of 48.627 quintillion cookies. This will grant a +365% Prestige multiplier on the next run and 365 Heavenly Chips to spend on heavenly upgrades. To view which heavenly upgrades to buy and when to ascend during future ascensions, refer to the ascension guide .
There are a handful of easy achievements, primarily in the miscellaneous category. Most of which can be done in the early game. Since achievements provide Milk that gives a CpS multiplier with Kitten upgrades, unlocking these will be beneficial to cookie production.

While these do not provide milk, and thus do not contribute towards CpS, here are some easy shadow achievements.
Icon | Name | Description | How to Get |
---|---|---|---|
God complex | Name yourself . Note : usurpers incur a -1% CpS penalty until they rename themselves something else. | Click the bakery's name at the top of the Big Cookie, rename it to "Orteil", and press Confirmon the popup. There is also an easter egg where renaming the bakery to "Ortiel", a misspelling which Orteil particularly dislikes, will incurr a -2% CpS penalty instead of -1%, and does not unlock the achievement. | |
In her likeness | Shape your clones to resemble grandmas. | Requires . Configure the clones to resemble . The prerequisite settings are Hair 10, Hair color 2 or 7, any Skin color, Head shape 3 or 4, and either Extra-A/B being 3 or 4, with the other being 1. Example import code: 9,1,1,3,7,3,0. Note that if imported, the game does not perform the likeness check to see if the details match the achievement specifications, thus one aspect has to be changed manually in the editor itself. |
What is milk and what does it do.
Milk pools at the bottom of the screen, increasing as achievements are unlocked. The Kitten upgrade line (starting at 9 million cookies) provides a boost to CpS based on the number of achievements unlocked. A new milk rank featuring a different flavour is unlocked every 25 achievements.
Generally, it is recommended to buy 15 of each building before going to the next one. To get a rough estimate on whether a building or an upgrade is worth the cost, hovering over a building will display the percentage of CpS it makes/boosts. Alternatively, mods like Cookie Monster or a website can be used to calculate the best possible purchase.
What are sugar lumps .
Sugar lumps are a valuable currency in Cookie Clicker. They can be spent on leveling buildings to give a production boost to that building or to unlock a minigame . They can also be spent to trigger a special event on a minigame.
Minigames are additional interactable elements in Cookie Clicker. As of now, 4 buildings each have an associated minigame although Orteil plans to add minigames to all 20 buildings.
The Farm 's minigame is the Garden , the Bank 's minigame is the Stock Market , the Temple 's minigame is the Pantheon and the Wizard Tower 's minigame is the Grimoire ,
Minigames can be unlocked by levelling its associated building to level 1 with a sugar lump. Further levelling up a minigame's associated building may boost it in some way.
Spend the first 4 sugar lumps on Wizard Towers, Temples, Farms and Banks in that order , leveling them each to level 1. This will unlock all 4 minigames.
Next, level Farms all the way to level 9 to unlock the max plot size for the Garden minigame.
After this, level Cursors to level 12 to fully upgrade the Stock Market office for max stock capacity and to unlock all 3 loans.
Once this is done, hoard 100 sugar lumps without spending them for a future heavenly upgrade.
Past this, you must refer to the full sugar lump spending guide . Through the course of gameplay, it may sometimes be beneficial to spend a lump to refill Grimoire mana during a combo and in even rarer cases spend a lump on the garden or pantheon.
The Grimoire is the Wizard Tower minigame and one of the most useful minigames. The Grimoire has 9 spells, the most important of which is the Force the Hand of Fate (FtHoF) spell that summons a golden cookie . This allows performing combos at will to gain a whole lot of cookies in a few seconds. For more information, see the section on combos below.
The Pantheon is the Temple minigame, allowing different spirits to be worshiped in three slots of varying effectiveness. The Pantheon can be used to optimise for playing idle (leaving the game in the background to generate cookies) or active (clicking golden cookies) playstyles. Setups for both can be found on the Pantheon article or the external Pantheon guide .
The Garden is the Farm minigame, allowing for the cultivation of a variety of plants that can give useful effects. The Garden is the most complicated minigame but can prove useful as the game progresses. For information on this minigame, see the Garden article, strategy page and external guide . The external guide has a step-by-step section to breed starter-level plants, especially useful to those new to the Garden.
The Stock Market is the Bank minigame, allowing for the trading of stocks for cookie profit and taking out loans to boost production for a limited time. While the Stock Market may not be extremely profitable especially as combos become more and more powerful, it is the source of many achievements and its loans can prove useful in combos.
A combo is the fastest way to get cookies in Cookie Clicker. It is performed by stacking two or more golden cookie effects at the same time. Combos involve 1 or more CpS buffs such as Frenzy and a Building Special (an effect that boosts CpS based on the number of a randomly selected building) and 1 or 2 click buffs such as Click Frenzy (an effect that boosts gains from clicking by 777x).
A combo is usually paired with temporarily CpS buffs. In the early game, players can use the Pantheon spirit Godzamok, which boosts clicking gains based on buildings sold, in the Diamond slot. During a combo, sell all buildings that make/boost less than 2% of the overall CpS to gain a large boost to clicking gains.
In most combos, a Click Frenzy is obtained from the Grimoire spell Force the Hand of Fate (FtHoF). Unlike natural golden cookies which have about 3% chance to give a Click Frenzy, FtHoF golden cookies have a 25% chance to give a Click Frenzy.
The simplest combo is a Frenzy + Click Frenzy. To accomplish this, simply get a Frenzy from regular golden cookies. Then, cast FtHoF and hope it gives a Click Frenzy. If it does, sell buildings to Godzamok before clicking as fast as possible.
For more information on combos, see the simple combo guide.
On rare occasions, golden cookies result in a blab , displaying one of 38 messages. While this only has a ~0.003% chance of coming from a natural golden cookie, it has a significantly increased chance of coming from the Grimoire spell Force the Hand of Fate , with a 1.37% chance of coming from FtHoF golden cookies and a 10% chance of coming from FtHof wrath cookies.
What is the grandmapocalypse .
The Grandmapocalypse is an event in Cookie Clicker that primarily benefits the idle playstyle. It is triggered and advanced by certain research upgrades .
The Grandmapocalypse has two major effects on gameplay. Firstly, it replaces golden cookies with wrath cookies , a variant of golden cookies that are red. While wrath cookies can give negative effects, such as halving the CpS for a short amount of time or causing cookies from the bank to be lost, wrath cookies can also give special positive effects like the rare Elder Frenzy, multiplying the CpS by 666 for a very brief period of time. Secondly, it summons wrinklers around the Big Cookie , which leech away a portion of the CpS. Wrinklers can be popped, causing each one to explode into the number of cookies they collectively leeched, plus an extra 10%.
The Grandmapocalypse is triggered and advanced by certain research upgrades . To start, you should have the "Elder" achievement for owning 7 Grandma types (the seventh one being Cosmic grandmas requiring 15 Shipments and costing 255 billion cookies). This will unlock the Bingo center/Research facility upgrade for 1 quadrillion cookies. Purchasing this will begin the research upgrades.
Each research upgrade takes 30 minutes to unlock, the timer starting once the previous one has been purchased. Research upgrades are useful as they benefit your CpS and Grandma production. There are three research upgrades that advance the Grandmapocalypse. The first is One mind, the fifth research upgrade, starting the Grandmapocalypse at Stage 1. The second is Communal brainsweep, the seventh research upgrade, advancing the Grandmapocalypse to Stage 2. The third is Elder Pact, the ninth and last research upgrade, advancing the Grandmapocalypse to the final Stage 3. The costs of research upgrades start at 1 quadrillion and subsequently double in price, with Elder Pact costing 256 quadrillion.
The Grandmapocalypse has a greater effect the higher the stage at you are at. At Stage 1, 33% of the golden cookies are replaced with wrath cookies and wrinklers appear at a slow pace. At Stage 2, 66% of the golden cookies are replaced with wrath cookies and wrinklers appear twice as fast. At Stage 3, all golden cookies are replaced with wrath cookies and wrinklers appear 3 times faster than they did in Stage 1.
Completing all the research upgrades has advantages to both idle and active players. The research upgrades in total provide a ~16% CpS multiplier in addition to the boosts to Grandma production, and the Grandmapocalypse unlocks numerous achievements .
After completing all research upgrades and unlocking Elder Pledge , it is recommended for active players to use Elder Pledge to disable the Grandmapocalypse. This will bring back golden cookies, allowing players to perform combos. Idle players, on the other hand, should leave the Grandmapocalypse active. Idle players can benefit from wrinklers by leaving them for a long time and then popping them if one needs a large amount of cookies to make a big purchase. As wrinklers, when popped, give more cookies than they leeched, having all 10 wrinklers feeding on the Big Cookie results in a net CpS multiplier of 6x. While this is extremely powerful to idle players, this is not worth it for active players as having the Grandmapocalypse enabled makes combos much harder as wrath cookies spawn instead of golden cookies, outweighing the benefits that the Grandmapocalypse provides.
Elder Pledge is generally recommended for disabling the Grandmapocalypse. While its cost multiplies every time it is used, it cannot go above 4.4 trillion cookies, meaning the cost of using it is always insignificant. Its duration is insignificant, because if a player is away long enough such that Elder Pledge runs out and the Grandmapocalypse is enabled again, it would be a positive as the player would be idle. Elder Covenant gives the player a 5% CpS debuff, making it not worth it except if the player wants to disable the Grandmapocalypse overnight to remove the chances of getting a meaty sugar lump .
Check here to see which heavenly upgrades to buy.
Why is the game so fast now.
Due to the buffs from heavenly upgrades, prestige, and achievements, cookie production increases exponentially.
If you manage to get more cookies than your o or ascension requires in the ascension guide , you can spend your extra heavenly chips on the next ascension’s upgrades.
The best mutation and beneficial (e.g. boosting CpS, golden cookie frequency) setups for the Garden can be found in the Garden Strategies page. Useful Pantheon setups for different playstyles can be found in the Pantheon page . A list for the uses and strategies for all Krumblor auras can be found on the Krumblor page .
To get these achievements, you will need to activate the “Born again” challenge mode in the ascension menu. This will start an ascension with no benefits from prestige or heavenly upgrades, in which you can attempt these achievements. You will get these benefits back on your next ascension.
During midgame, a combination of the heavenly upgrade Unshackled cursors and the synergy upgrade Mice clicking mice will boost cursors to become a very powerful building. As you progress further though, other buildings will begin to outclass Cursors.
This is due to the fact that you have the heavenly upgrade Sugar baking unlocked, which boosts your CpS by 1% for every sugar lump you have up to 100. Generally, after leveling Banks, Temples and Wizard towers to level 1, Farms to level 9 and Cursors to level 12, you should hoard 100 lumps without spending them. A full sugar lump spending guide can be found here .

How to trigger.
Step 1: Get the "Elder" AchievementGrandmas are an unique type of building. They have 2 upgrades, normal upgrades that are unlocked by having a certain number of Grandmas (These have rolling pin icons and are not relevant), and synergy upgrades that are unlocked by having fifteen of other buildings (These have Grandma icons).
Example: Having 15 farms will unlock the "Farmer Grandmas" Upgrade.
Purchase 7 different types of Grandmas to obtain the Elder Achievement. The soonest you will be able to do this is with the "Cosmic Grandmas" unlocked by having 15 Shipments.
Step 2: Purchase the Bingo center/Research facilityObtaining the "Elder" Achievement will unlock the Research Facility.
Purchase this upgrade, and it will begin unlocking new upgrades every 30 minutes or so.
Note that the Research Facility costs 1 Quadrillion Cookies, and will take a while to reach.
Step 3: Purchase the "One Mind" Research UpgradeStart buying the Research Upgrades. Note that the next upgrade will only begin researching after the previous one has been bought.
1st - Specialized chocolate chips: Cookie production multiplier +1%.
2nd - Designer cocoa beans: Cookie production multiplier +2%.
3rd - Ritual rolling pins: Grandmas are twice as efficient.
4th - One Mind:
Attempting to purchase this upgrade will result in the game giving you an ominous warning:
Click "Yes" to start the Grandmapocalypse.
It has begun. Wrinklers will slowly spawn around the Big Cookie, and "Golden Cookies" have a chance to spawn as "Wrath Cookies". (For details check the "Wrinkler" and "Wrath Cookie" sections.)
Grandma is now off her meds with her brand new icon.
The blue striped background has also been replaced.
Continue with the Research and purchase "Communal brainsweep".
5th - Exotic nuts: Cookie production multiplier +4%.
6th - Communal brainsweep:
The second stage of the Grandmapocalypse. Wrinklers will spawn faster and Wrath Cookies are now more common.
Grandma looks a bit upset now
Continue with the Research and purchase "Elder Pact".
7th - Arcane sugar: Cookie production multiplier +5%.
8th - Elder Pact:
The third and final stage of the Grandmapocalypse. Wrinklers will spawn even faster. All Golden Cookies now spawn as Wrath Cookies.
Granny has had enough and now reveals her true form
Congratulations! You've doomed us all.
Reaching Phase 3 on the Grandmapocalypse will unlock two new "upgrades". They will allow you to put a stop to Grandma's rage, for a price.
"Elder Pledge" lasts 30 Minutes. Its cost increases everytime you buy it.
"Elder Covenant" is permanent, but cuts 5% of your Cookies per Second. It can be Revoked.
Buying "Elder Pledge" 10 times will unlock one final Grandmatriarch upgrade:
Sacrificial rolling pins: Elder pledges last twice as long.
It's recommended to only buy the Elder Covenant once to unlock the achievement, then immediately revoke it to avoid the 5% penalty. If you want to stop the Grandmapocalypse to farm Golden Cookies while avoiding the bad effects from Wrath Cookies, stick to Elder Pledges. Their cost is relatively low.
Wrinklers will spawn and surround the big cookie. You can pop them by clicking on them. They each take 5% of your Cookies per Second. With the maximum of 10 Wrinklers (12 with the Heavenly Upgrade) spawned, they will take 50-60% of your CpS.
Sounds pretty bad, you should pop them as soon as possible, right?
No. You should actually let them eat as much as possible. When Wrinklers are popped, they vomit out all the cookies they ate, plus a large bonus.
By letting the Wrinklers consume your CpS, you are effectively multiplying the amount of cookies you get by more than 5. Yes, they are extremely good. You should only pop your Wrinklers if you need the cookies to buy an upgrade.
Wrinklers also have a very small chance to spawn shiny. Popping one of these is a Shadow Achievement. Expect a few frustrating hours if you want to get this.
Wrath Cookies can trigger any of the Golden Cookie Good effects (including upgrade exclusives like Dragonflight) but also have a roughly 50% chance of triggering one of three Bad Effects. They also add a very small chance of triggering one of two new Good Effects.
Wrath Cookie Exclusive Effects: Ruin!: Lose cookies. The opposite of Lucky!
Clot: Halves CpS for 66 seconds. The opposite of Frenzy
Building debuff: Cuts CpS by a certain amount for 30 seconds. This depends on the amount you own of a random building. The opposite of Building buffs.
Cursed Finger: For 10 seconds, it turns CpS to 0, but every click grants you 10 seconds of your CpS. Similar to Click Frenzy.
Elder frenzy: Boosts CpS by x666 for 6 seconds. One of the strongest effects in the game.
As you can see, Wrath Cookies can be a bit of a gamble. But the positive effects greatly counterweight the negative ones. Golden Cookies are generally still better, because Clots can hurt quite a bit.
If you're farming Golden Cookies, you should stop the Grandmapocalypse at Phase 1, since you can get Wrinkler benefits while also getting a pretty high chance of getting Golden Cookies. You should still get to Phase 3 on your first runs to get the Grandmapocalypse Achievements.
Wrath Cookies still count towards your Golden Cookies Clicked, so don't worry about not making progress towards Golden Cookies Achievements.
If you're an idler who doesn't care much about hunting for Golden Cookies, there is no reason not to go all the way to Phase 3.
Achievements related to the Grandmapocalypse:
Elder nap: Appease the grandmatriarchs at least once.
Elder slumber: Appease the grandmatriarchs at least 5 times.
Elder calm: Declare a covenant with the grandmatriarchs.
Itchscratcher: Burst 1 wrinkler
Wrinklesquisher: Burst 50 wrinklers.
Moistburster: Burst 200 wrinklers.
Last Chance to See (Shadow Achievement): Burst the near-extinct shiny wrinkler.
Ah yes, the classic "boohoo i just wanna play the cookie game why did it all get so creepyyyyy". The game is over 8 years old now, I'm sure many of us have been there.
Thankfully, the benevolent Orteil (he's the guy who makes this game btw) has added a new setting in the Steam version. Go to the "Options" menu and disable "Scary Stuff".
Now instead of wanting to kill you, Granny merely scowls at you for being a coward.
Y'know, in a way this is almost scarier.

I am a mobile player and I wonder how far I should go with the research facility upgrades. I check the game only once every second or even third day, and then I only look if I can buy certain buildings or upgrades. Needless to say, I am not the most active player and thus I don't look out that much for getting golden cookies. That said, how far should I go with the research facility upgrades to ensure the most afk efficiency?
