I set up my spreads in my notebook myself, but if you want a preprinted planner for academic success, there is the PhD Planner . I learned about this planner from its creator, who was kind enough to send me a free copy.

So what does this planner have: – half-year spreads to help you plan long-term and note down important deadlines – weekly spreads, which you can use for writing down priorities and appointments – paper planning spreads, to help you get your manuscript out – conference planning spreads, which facilitate all the actions you need to take care of before and after a conference – a deep work tracker to help you get into the habit of making time for and doing deep work – quarterly progress spreads, to identify your goals per quarter

I must say, that I haven’t come around to using this planner (even though I’ve been dragging it to my office every day) because I already have a BuJo system in place that works very well for me – and as a faculty member, my responsibilities are a bit more distributed than for a PhD student. One thing I also noticed is that the paper on which the journal is printed is not very friendly for those of us who write with a fountain pen (for my BuJo, I use a Moleskine, and their paper is soft as butter for writing).

Nonetheless, if you don’t have a fixed, well-working time management system in place, or you feel your system could need a refresh, I strongly recommend you check out and try out this planner.

This planner is a great tool for PhD students. As you may be getting ready now for the start of the academic year, do yourself the favor of ordering your planner now 🙂

PhD in City & Regional Planning

phd planner nat

The program

Berkeley's PhD in City & Regional Planning provides training in urban and planning theory, advanced research, and the practice of planning. Established in 1968, the program has granted more than 160 doctorates. Alums of the program have established national and international reputations as planning educators, social science researchers and theorists, policy makers, and practitioners. Today, the program is served by nearly 20 city and regional planning faculty with expertise in community and economic development, transportation planning, urban design, international development, environmental planning, and global urbanism. With close ties to numerous research centers and initiatives, the program encourages its students to develop specializations within the field of urban studies and planning and to expand their intellectual horizons through training in the related fields of architecture, landscape architecture and environmental planning, civil engineering, anthropology, geography, sociology, public policy, public health, and political science.

Completing a PhD in City & Regional Planning at UC Berkeley usually takes five years. The university requires all doctoral students to fulfill a minimum residency requirement of two years and 48 units of coursework. Full-time students are expected to take four courses, or 12 units, per semester. For the PhD in City & Regional Planning, students must complete various program requirements, including courses in planning and urban theory; research methods courses; and preparation and completion of two fields of specialization. They must also successfully complete an oral qualifying examination, which allows them to advance to candidacy and undertake dissertation research. A PhD is awarded upon completion of a written dissertation approved by the faculty supervisors of the dissertation.

The PhD program encourages its students to build intellectual community and to participate in national and international venues of scholarship. Doctoral candidates regularly present their research at the annual conferences of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, Association of American Geographers, Association of European Schools of Planning, World Planning Schools Congress, Urban Affairs Association, and American Anthropological Association. They organize and participate in a weekly research colloquium and manage the Berkeley Planning Journal , a peer-reviewed academic publication. Such activities utilize the incredible intellectual resources available to doctoral students at UC Berkeley, both within their departments and programs and across the campus.

Financial Aid + Admissions

Admission to the PhD program is highly competitive. Applicants are required to have completed a master's degree in planning or a related field. They are expected to demonstrate capacity for advanced research and to present a compelling research topic as part of their application. Once admitted to the program, students are eligible to compete for various university fellowships, including the Berkeley Fellowship, Cota-Robles Fellowship, and the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship. Students of the program have also been successful in securing funding for dissertation research from the National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, and the Fulbright scholarships.

The Department of City & Regional Planning and UC Berkeley offer multiple types of financial support to its graduate students.

Please note that admission decisions are not made by individual faculty, but rather an admissions committee. Our PhD admissions process begins with three initial reviews of your application: the two faculty members you list as preferred advisors and one member of the PhD admission committee. The admission committee then meets to review all applications as a cohort and make admission/denial decisions. More information can be found on the department admissions page .

The principal admission requirements to the doctoral program in City & Regional Planning are overall excellence in past academic work and research, demonstrated creativity and intellectual leadership in professional activity, and the strong promise of sustained intellectual achievement, originality, and scholarship. The emphasis in the doctoral program is upon scholarship and research. At the same time, because the doctorate is offered in the context of a professional school, doctoral students are challenged to undertake applied research relevant to city and regional planning and policy problems. If you do not want to teach in planning or a related field, or to do advanced research, please reconsider applying to this program. Most doctoral students enter the program with a master’s degree in planning or a related field. The Master of City Planning is regarded as a terminal professional degree, and is not comparable to mid-study Master of Arts or Master of Science degrees offered in anticipation of the doctorate.

Admission to the doctoral program is very competitive. Only six to eight students are admitted each year, sometimes from a pool of as many as 80 applicants. For all applicants to the doctoral program (even those required to take an English-language competency exam (TOEFL, TOEFL CBT, iBT TOEFL, or IELTS) the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional; although prospective students who choose to take the GRE should do so before December to ensure timely receipt of scores. Applicants must also secure at least three letters of recommendation that can explicitly evaluate their intellectual capability and past research and academic work.

Please note that admission decisions are not made by individual faculty, but rather an admissions committee. DCRP’s PhD admissions process begins with three initial reviews of your application: the two faculty members you list as preferred advisors and one member of the PhD admission committee. The admission committee then meets to review all applications as a cohort and make admission/denial decisions.

Many PhD students choose to pursue one or more of the designated emphases (DEs) offered through programs across campus. These DEs are unrelated to the outside field required by the City & Regional Planning PhD, and can be thought of instead as elective “minors” which provide opportunities for focused interdisciplinary work, mentorship, conference funding, research fellowships and an extra credential along with the doctoral degree. Common DEs pursued by DCRP PhD students include:

  • Global Metropolitan Studies (GMS)
  • Science and Technology Studies (STS)
  • Development Engineering (DevEng)
  • Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS)
  • Political Economy
  • Film & Media
  • Critical Theory

Dr. rer. nat. vs PhD. Do titles really matter?

I‘m looking for advice on whether or not your official title matters in the future. I was planning to start a Dr. rer. nat position in Germany, but am concerned about the transferable applications to the US or other international countries. Are PhD titles more valued and understood? Anyone have real world experience ?

*update: thank you for all your input!! It has been extremely helpful and calming for my nerves. I also asked my future advisor what his experience is since he has a Dr. rer. nat and worked in the US. He told me in Germany, it’s a higher honor than PhD but in other countries, it’s regarded the same. This is because there are more restrictions on who can award a Dr. rer nat and the structure of the thesis. So I’ll probably go for the Dr. rer. nat instead of PhD.

ACL Administration for Community Living

Final Rule: Federal Regulations for APS Programs

On May 7, 2024, ACL published a final rule to establish the first-ever federal regulations for adult protective services. The regulations take effect on June 7, 2024, but regulated entities have until May 8, 2028 to fully comply.

  • On Tuesday, May 14 at 3 p.m. (Eastern), ACL will host a webinar to provide an overview of the rule. Advance registration is required. (A recording of the webinar will be available on this page later this month.)

ACL looks forward to working with stakeholders to implement the final rule and will provide robust technical assistance and other resources in the coming months — watch this page and subscribe to ACL Updates for more information!

APS programs across the country support older adults and adults with disabilities who experience, or who are risk of, abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or financial exploitation. APS programs investigate reports of maltreatment; conduct case planning, monitoring and evaluation; and provide, or connect people to, a variety of medical, social service, economic, legal, housing, law enforcement, and other protective, emergency, or support services. Over the past decade, ACL has led federal efforts to support the critical work of APS programs through a variety of initiatives.

The 2024 APS rule was developed in response to long-standing requests from the APS community, Congress, and other stakeholders for federal guidance, leadership, stewardship, resources, and support for APS systems and victims of adult maltreatment. Those requests became particularly urgent in recent years, when ACL received appropriations to fund — for the first time — the state APS formula grant program that was authorized by the Elder Justice Act in 2010. (In 2021, ACL received one-time COVID-19 supplemental appropriations to fund start-up costs and fund the program for two years. In 2023, the program was added to ACL’s ongoing annual appropriations.)

The new regulations promote high-quality APS and will improve consistency in services across states. With the final rule, ACL aims to support the national network that delivers APS, with the ultimate goal of better meeting the needs of adults who experience, or are at risk of, maltreatment or self-neglect. To those ends, the final rule:

  • Establishes a set of national standards for the operation of APS programs that all state APS systems must meet. These standards codify — and build upon — the existing National Voluntary Consensus Guidelines for State APS Systems. It’s important to note that these standards represent the “floor”  — states are encouraged to adopt services, practices, and processes that exceed them.
  • Establishes definitions for terms that are foundational to APS practice to improve information sharing, data collection, and program standardization between and within states, but does not require states to adopt them verbatim.
  • Creates a tiered assessment system to differentiate between cases that represent immediate risk (defined as those that are life-threatening or likely to cause irreparable harm or significant loss of income, assets, or resources) and those that do not, and establishes response timelines for each.
  • Requires APS programs to provide at least two ways for reports of adult maltreatment and self-neglect to be made 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  At least one must be an online method, such as a secure email inbox.
  • Emphasizes person-directedness and least-restrictive alternatives as core values in APS practice.
  • Requires robust conflict of interest policies to support ethical APS practice.
  • Promotes coordination and collaboration with other entities, such as state Medicaid agencies, long-term care ombudsmen, tribal APS, and law enforcement.
  • Requires state APS entities to create state plans at least every five years and to submit annual program performance data.

The final rule is the culmination of many years of engagement with stakeholders from across the country, and it reflects the thoughtful, detailed input ACL received on the proposed rule. Overall, comments supported the goals and content of the proposed rule, but some state APS programs raised concerns about the administrative burden and expense of implementation, particularly given the limited federal funding for APS programs. To address those concerns, ACL deleted or significantly modified a number of polices in the final rule. For example, the timeline for compliance is lengthened from three years to four, and requirements for staff-to-client ratios were omitted.

Key Provisions of the Proposed Rule:

We have created a plainer-language overview of some of the core provisions of the proposed rule. It was written to be easier to understand for people without an in-depth understanding of APS or a legal background. It does not include all of the provisions or complete details of the summarized provisions. Please use this document as a tool to navigate the proposed rule; it should not be considered a substitute.

  • The complete proposed rule can be found on the website of the Federal Register.
  • Highlights of the rule's provisions can be found in this two-page fact sheet .

Background on Adult Maltreatment and Adult Protective Services

Research shows that at least 1 in 10 older adults who live in the community experiences some form of maltreatment each year — and this is likely an undercount, because only 1 in 14 cases is reported. We also know that adults with disabilities experience abuse and neglect far more often than their peers without disabilities, although estimates of the prevalence vary significantly from one study to the next.

This can have serious physical and mental health, financial, and social consequences. People who experience abuse have higher rates of depression, hospitalization, and institutionalization — and they are more likely to die prematurely. They also may experience deteriorated family relationships, diminished autonomy, and institutionalization as the direct result of maltreatment.

APS programs across the country support older adults and adults with disabilities who experience, or who are risk of, maltreatment or self-neglect. APS programs investigate reports of maltreatment; conduct case planning, monitoring, and evaluation; and provide (or connect people to) a variety of medical, social service, economic, legal, housing, law enforcement, and other protective, emergency, or support services to help them recover.

APS has been funded and administered wholly at the state or local level until recently. Consequently, there is wide variation in APS services and practices between, and even within, states. The new regulations will improve consistency and quality of services across the country.

DC-based financial planner shares tips for building generational wealth

D.C.-based financial planner Jacqueline Schadeck didn’t grow up with much, and when her mother finally came into some money, she lost it all within a matter of years.

Schadeck’s ancestors moved to California during the 1849 gold rush and bought property. But she said that it was sold out from under them and in the process of getting it back, her grandfather passed away.

That resulted in Schadeck’s mother inheriting more than $1 million between 2006 and 2008. With the money, she planned to take care of her family, buy a home and start a business. Then, Schadeck said her mother sought an adviser and made a series of bad financial investments based on that advice.

All the money was gone by 2010.

Losing it all and finding purpose

“I had a lot of questions. I said, ‘I don’t understand. I don’t think this is supposed to go like this. I don’t think you’re supposed to inherit a million dollars and then lose it all in a few years,'” Schadeck said.

The setback affected Schadeck greatly on a personal and financial level. But it motivated her to become a certified financial planner.

“That experience of my family having lost generational wealth inspired me to want to help others get and maintain generational wealth,” Schadeck said, adding that it’s “very important that we have trustworthy people in finance and in life that we can ask questions to and lean on and depend on for real answers.”

Jacqueline Schadeck speaking

Building generational wealth can be a challenging process, especially for Black families. According to data from the Federal Reserve , Black households had a median wealth of about $44,890 in 2022, in contrast to white households, which had around $285,000 in median wealth.

While Schadeck’s experience is not representative of all Black families, she said her family’s financial woes were due to the lack of a trusted adviser.

“We need to have people that we can trust, that can give us genuine, objective, comprehensive advice, because I think the biggest gap in the financial advising industry in America is the fact that almost anybody can call themselves a financial adviser,” she said.

“People need to have somebody that they can trust, that is, again, objective — that can help them put all of this together so that they can build and keep wealth.”

Taking the long view

Schadeck is a founder of Golden Wealth Strategies, a company that offers comprehensive financial planning and investment management. The company has two offices, including one in Bethesda, Maryland.

Schadeck advises people to follow the five-star retirement plan, which includes discussing income, wealth management, tax efficiency, health care and estate planning.

She added that retirees should look at the resources available to them to determine if they can earn more from what they already have saved, while younger people should look to build a high-income skill set to make more money.

“Many times, the distribution phase of investing isn’t set up properly for people to be able to retire and earn as much money as possible,” Schadeck said.

She encouraged people to invest and focus on assets such as businesses, real estate and the stock market that will help your family in the long run.

My Money Mentors

“A lot of times, when we’re talking about building wealth and getting money, we hear a lot of ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes,” Schadeck said. “But if we can make a long-term plan, and we can follow that investment strategy, that’s going to help us get to building generational wealth.”

Schadeck also hosts a new TV show on PBS called “My Money Mentors.” The show is about making financial literacy simple and fun to learn for young adults.

“If we can make understanding finance a little bit simpler, we can get more of those financial recommendations implemented and then we can have more success collectively as a people,” Schadeck said.

Deb in the Desert: Interior Secretary Deb Haaland stumps for Joe Biden in Arizona ahead of Dobbs anniversary

PHOENIX – Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is just one of many high-level Biden administration figures barnstorming in the Grand Canyon State this month as the campaign highlights the coming second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision.

At a coffee shop in Phoenix’s mid-century modern Melrose District, Haaland brewed a speech to a group of activists, trumpeting the president alongside state Sen. Priya Sundareshan and state House Democratic Assistant Minority Leader Oscar De Los Santos.

“As President Biden always says, don’t compare him to the almighty, compare him to the alternative,” Haaland quipped.

Monday marks the second anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and put abortion policy largely back in the hands of the states, leading to a wide variety of policies across the country.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland stumps for Biden at a coffee shop in Phoenix's mid-century modern Melrose District.

Abortion is a rallying issue for Arizona Democrats. Still, the big question remains: Will it win over voters undecided on who to choose for president and in various down-ballot races? On the Republican side, the primary has largely been about immigration and economic policy.

Biden won the state by roughly 10,000 votes in 2020, but Trump won the state over 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

“We want to make sure all Americans have more freedoms than their parents did,” Haaland said.

The secretary is expected to campaign with Rep. Greg Stanton on Saturday morning, as congressional Democrats have supported codifying provisions in Roe into federal law if Biden wins re-election with a united Congress. Earlier Friday, Haaland spoke with “Women for Biden-Harris” attendees in the northern Arizona city of Flagstaff.

An even bigger name will be visiting the Valley to mark Monday’s anniversary: Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris, First Lady Jill Biden and the president have all visited Arizona in recent months. The Post reported that at an outreach event to senior citizens last week, the first lady chided those concerned about the president’s age and fitness to serve a second White House term.

Haaland spoke in Arizona ahead of the anniversary of Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade

Arizona became ground zero for the abortion debate in the post-Roe era, making it a natural focal point for the Biden team. There is a 15-week law on the books that bans the procedure in most circumstances after that point, but there will likely be a proposition on the November ballot asking if it should be a state constitutional right to allow abortion up until “fetal viability.” Opponents of the effort have argued the amendment’s proposed language would allow for abortions past the 23- to 25-week mark and spark other issues.

“Let’s be very clear: We have the chance this November to protect in our state Constitution our rights to reproductive freedom, but we also have to protect these rights at the national level as well. And that includes the White House,” Sundareshan said.

Arizona made headlines in the spring when the state Supreme Court ruled 4-2 to allow a near-total ban on abortion, created in 1984 and re-codified in 1977, to become enforceable over the 15-week one. After a heated few weeks at the state Capitol, the Legislature and Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs repealed the near-total ban just before the old law would have become enforceable.

If voters pass the ballot initiative, then the 15-week law, signed by Republican former Gov. Doug Ducey in early 2022, would be overridden.
