It’s the same with remote work. It was unthinkable just a few years ago that many roles could be conducted from the comfort of your sofa. With this explosion of working from home (WFH) in recent years, countless opportunities have opened up for people across all industries in the US. 

You need a great resume for remote jobs just like you would any other role. But do remote job resumes look different? Let’s explore how to write an effective remote job resume and see some examples of how to put it together so you can see what you’ll need to do to get ahead in the remote workforce.

Remote work - yea or nay

Employers are finding new ways in which to create productive teams that are distributed around the country — or even around the world. 

Of course, some jobs are easier to do remotely, such as marketing and tech work. While other industries may find it difficult to offer WFH roles. Take the construction industry, for example. It may be hard to find a remote role in a position within this field, but there are still administrative roles that could allow you to WFH.

But is remote working for you? 

It can depend on what your own particular working style is. 

Do you thrive in an office environment, surrounded by team members, bouncing ideas off each other left, right, and center? 

Are you happy to squirrel yourself away into the corner and get on with your work diligently and without interruptions? 

Not surprisingly, if you favor the latter approach, this lends itself more to remote working.

So, if you’re targeting a remote job, you really need your resume to reflect this aspiration.

How to tailor your resume to remote work

When you decide that you do want to pursue remote work, there are several quick changes you can make to your existing resume to achieve a great remote job resume:

1. Contact information section 

In the contact details at the top of the resume, where your name and location are found, insert that you are looking for remote work. While most job listings will specify that the job they are advertising is remote, it’s not always clear, so spell it out to a prospective employer that remote work is what you’re after.

If you already have remote work experience, make this clear in your Work History section by writing “remote” under your job title.

4. Special projects or extracurriculars

If you haven’t got any remote experience to fall back on, show a hiring manager that you possess the necessary skills that mean you will succeed in a remote environment. One idea is to mention any experience of personal projects where you completed something off your own back, demonstrating how much of a self-starter you are and how you can be productive away from the office. If this won’t fit within the resume, insert it into the cover letter.

It will help and certainly won’t do any harm if you already have experience in remote working environments, as this shows that you can self-manage and work in a virtual team. 5 Steps to Create a Remote Job Resume

There are several differences between a remote job resume and a conventional one. 

For starters, a remote job resume needs to make it clear to the recruiter you’re looking to get hired remotely (especially if you’re applying at a company that hires both remote and on-site staff). 

At the same time, your professional experience section should, one, comprehensively reflect any remote work experience you’ve had in the past, and two, be very compelling to show the hiring manager that you’re an A-player. 

The skills section is also different in a remote job resume. In addition to the skills related to your industry, it’s important to include skills that can prove you can perform well working remotely. Think, reliability, work ethic, time management, and other such skills.  

Below, we’ll go into detail about all the steps you need to take to write a remote job resume that’ll land you an interview, starting with:  

#1. Make It Known You’re Looking for a Remote Job

The first thing you want to do is use your resume to let potential employers know you're looking for a remote job.

Although most job listings specify the job is remote, that might not always be the case. Some companies, for example, may allow you to work remotely if you're really qualified for the job. 

Others may simply list their headquarters and note they allow employees to work remotely (but not whether they’re hiring a remote worker for this specific job).

No matter the case, your remote job resume is your best opportunity to make it clear you're looking to work remotely from the get-go. 

There are three places where you can do that on your remote job resume: 

  • The contact information section . Instead of adding your physical address, you can specify you prefer working remotely by writing “working remotely from [location].”
  • The resume summary . This is where you express your professional intent as an applicant and aim to grab the recruiter’s attention early on. As such, it’s one of the best places to mention your remote work experience and state you’re looking to work remotely. 
  • The work experience section. If you have previous remote work experience, make that known by writing “remote” under your professional title.

So that the hiring manager doesn’t spend their entire day reviewing resumes, they use applicant tracking systems instead.

  • Have bad formatting
  • Don’t mention the right type of keywords

#3. Write a Compelling Resume Summary

The first section recruiters will really notice on your remote job resume is your resume summary. 

The resume summary is a 2 or 3-sentence long paragraph where you mention: 

  • Your job title and years of experience. (E.g. “Customer support agent with 6+ years experience in customer service and IT industry.” ) 
  • Your top skills and achievements (or core responsibilities). (E.g. “Responsible and communicative, I specialize in user retention, technical support, and customer care.” ) 
  • Your professional goals. (E.g. “Looking to apply my skills and experience as a lead support agent for your internet software company.” ) 

Done right, your resume summary will grab recruiters’ attention and get them to go through the rest of your resume in more detail and attention. 

As such, it’s a great place to also mention you prefer working remotely or highlight one or two in-demand remote working skills, such as your reliability or your excellent time management . 

Alternatively, you can use your remote resume summary to list the countries where you have working rights or your time zone. Many of the companies that hire remote workers are looking for people in specific countries or time zones. 

Here’s how you’d do that:

Tech-savvy and reliable content writer with 8 years of experience in SEO, research, and copywriting. I have worked remotely for the past 4 years, writing for several niches including e-learning, blockchain, and alternative health and wellness. US citizen currently working remotely from Italy, but able to work in US time zones if need be.

#4. Highlight Remote Working Skills

To perform well in a remote workplace, you’ll need to have a certain set of skills. Mentioning these skills in your resume, especially if you don’t have a lot of remote work experience, can really tip the scales in your favor.

Say, for example, that you’re applying for a job as a remote chat support agent. 

Considering you’ll be working from home, it will be up to you to wake up and start working at the right time on a daily basis. This means that reliability and a strong work ethic are all the more important as soft skills for this remote position than if you’d be working from an office.

The same goes for hard skills. Remote jobs require a bunch of hard skills that may not be as necessary when you’re working from a physical location. In the chat support agent case, for example, you might need the following hard skills to succeed in a remote environment:

  • Digital communication
  • Intercom automation

The work experience section is the most critical part of your remote resume. 

Here, the hiring manager wants to see that you’re not just any job-seeker - they want to see that you’re an A-player.

And simply listing out your responsibilities just won’t do.

In this section, we’ll explain how to create a work experience section that’s likely to get noticed by the hiring manager.

But first, let’s talk about the basics. Here’s how you should format your work experience entries:

  • Stick with the reverse-chronological order. Begin with your latest professional experience and work your way back.
  • Add your job title. Make sure the title properly describes your role and avoid buzzwords or “funny” job titles (e.g. “keyboard wizard” instead of “copywriter”).
  • Include the company’s details. These include key information such as the company’s name and location (or “remote,” if you work online).
  • Mention the employment period. Use the mm/yyyy format throughout the remote job resume.
  • Write down your responsibilities and achievements . Use up to 5 bullet points for recent positions and 2-3 bullet points for older roles.

Now that we’ve got formatting out of the way, let’s talk about how you can make the section more compelling: 

  • Tailor your work experience to the position. If you have a TON of work experience, only mention the most recent (and relevant) roles. Rule of thumb, your last 3-4 work experiences are enough. If any of these were remote, make sure to mention that.
  • Use numbers to back up your achievements. Quantifying your achievements can really take your work experience section from great to perfect. Reading “increased company client base from 3 to 8 within a year” will be much more convincing to recruiters than “managed to get more clients.”
  • Take advantage of action verbs . Action verbs like “collaborated,” “proofread,” “edited,” “oversaw,” “managed,” etc., are much better at driving the point home than “was responsible for” or “achieved X and Y.”

What If I Don’t Have Remote Work Experience? 

Some companies may hesitate to hire you for a remote position if you’ve never worked remotely before (even if you’re otherwise qualified for the role). 

This is primarily because some professionals simply don’t “click” with remote work. Working from home might seem like an amazing idea in theory, but it might turn out that you:

  • Don’t like the loneliness associated with working from home
  • Find it very hard to keep yourself motivated and productive without coworkers around
  • Have a hard time getting inspired without face-to-face contact with your coworkers

And any of these reasons might turn out to be a good reason to quit.

As such, the hiring manager is less likely to give you a shot if you don’t have any experience working remotely.

But does this mean that you just can’t find a remote job without past remote work experience?

Not really - you just need to show the hiring manager that you have the skills that’ll enable you to succeed in a remote work environment.

One great way to do this is by mentioning your experiences with past personal projects. Anything like:

  • A website you’ve worked on in your free time.
  • A game you developed in university.
  • A personal blog you’ve maintained over the years.
  • Illustrations you’ve done for a show/game that you like.

Mentioning such projects in your remote resume shows that you’re a self-starter and a type of person that can be productive without being in the office.

Simply create a dedicated section for “Personal Projects” and list your experience just like you would with your work experience section:

Yes, cover letters are still relevant.

While not as important as your remote resume, they can definitely help you stand out from other applicants and more than half of employers prefer candidates who submit a cover letter.

Now as for how you can use a cover letter to get hired for a remote job, there are 2 good options. You can go with one of the other, or you can do a mix of the two:

  • Explain why you’re the perfect candidate for the role by mentioning your achievements, skills, or qualifications.
  • Explain why you’re a good culture fit for the company and talk about why you’re passionate about working for the company.

In the case of the first, you’d want to review the job ad you’re applying for and identify the key requirements.

Then, in your cover letter, cover these requirements more in-depth.

If, for example, the requirement is “Managing an ad budget in 5-figures,” here’s how you’d frame this in your cover letter:

Past experience involved managing an ad budget in 5-figures while working for Company X. I was in charge of the entire account end-to-end, including picking out creatives, writing copy, running A/B tests, and so on. My goal, which I hit and exceeded, was to maintain a ROAS of over 150%.

Now if you want your cover letter to be a bit more focused on how you’re a good culture fit, here’s what you need to do.

First, you should research the employer and see whether you’re actually a good fit and whether you truly like the company:

  • Check the employer’s social media profiles. What kind of content do they post? Who’s their target audience?
  • Read up about the company’s mission statement. Is it something you resonate with?
  • What’s their product/service? Is it something you’re passionate about working on?
  • Read their company news blog. What has the company been doing in the past year? Anything you particularly find interesting?

Then, use this information in your cover letter to communicate why you’re passionate about working at the company.

But in the real world, they do.

The hiring manager will start forming an opinion about you as they lay their eyes on your header. So, you don't want their first impression of you to be negative.

To avoid a bad start:

Use a professional email address that doesn't look like a randomly generated gaming alias. Instead of "rya201.ny", use a different username format such as "[email protected]."

If "first.last" is already taken, you may try out different variations until you find one that's available.

For example:

Be sure to add a link to your Linkedin profile or a portfolio depending on your job and required skills.

  • A graphic designer may feature a link to their portfolio on Behance, Dribble, Squarespace, etc.
  • A web developer might include links to code hosting sites such as GitHub, Bitbucket, SourceForge, etc.

With more positions becoming hybrid or fully remote, it’s worth learning how to effectively showcase remote work on your resume. In this guide, we’ve put together a few tips to help you get started, as well as some examples of remote work accomplishments you can list on your resume.

How to put remote jobs on your resume

There are a few different ways to make it clear on your resume that you’ve worked remotely (or are open to remote work in the future).

  • List your location and/or the location of your office.
  • Add “(Remote)” to the end of your location.
  • Specify remote work in your resume header.
  • Mention remote work in your resume summary .

You can choose to put your remote work experience (or willingness to work remotely) in your resume header, resume summary or your bullet point accomplishments, but wherever you choose to put it, it’s important you highlight the right quantifiable accomplishments and soft skills. When to include remote work on your resume

You don’t always need to specify that you worked remotely. You should mention remote work on your resume if:

  • You’re specifically looking for remote opportunities

It’s a better idea to leave explicit mentions of remote work off your resume if:

  • You’re applying for a 100% in-person role

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is about how to create a resume that caters to work-from-home jobs . There are a lot of unique situations behind this question. But, first and foremost, the application process for remote work is simply different than that for traditional employment. You are likely never going to meet your employer or interviewer face-to-face. First impressions count. Your first impression is just an email or fill-in-the-blank boxes before hitting a submit button. How do you stand out with that?

Today, I’ve put together a big list of resume tips to help you better construct a compelling resume, feel more confident doing so, and, hopefully, get yourself a work-at-home job a little sooner.

What Does a Good Work-at-Home Resume Look Like?

Many people are surprised to find out that most companies hiring work-at-home agents are looking for a format a little different than the traditional chronological resume. While resumes for traditional on-site jobs often focus on education and prior employment, many recruiters in the online world are looking for a skills match first and foremost.

Highlight Your Experience Over Education

A hybrid skills-based resume puts your skills most applicable to the job you are applying for front and center. The first section of the resume, after your name and contact information, is your skills.

Another benefit of a skills-based resume is that gaps in employment are often less noticeable. This is a great option for those looking for a career change that may not necessarily have the workplace experience but do have the skills. You are still listing work experience on this hybrid resume, but it isn’t the main focus.

Most employers are looking for you to answer a couple basic questions with your resume:

  • Why this job?

Because of that, you will likely need to tailor your resume to each category of job – if not each job – to which you are applying. Pick three or four broad skills categories to put on your resume. Back those skills up with job experience, life experience, and/or specific accomplishments.

After the skills section, list your work history. You only need to go back 5 to 10 years, depending on how much work experience you have. If you have worked for several work-at-home companies or freelance gigs at one time, you may want to limit your work history to five years.

You can also modify this section a bit as well. Give a brief description of the type of work the company does, but then list specific accomplishments you achieved on the job as opposed to every task you did. For example: Rather than just stating you wrote articles for clients, highlight that you wrote over 60 articles that were published on Forbes . Rather than simply stating that you managed a client’s social media platforms, highlight the growth or results they experienced while you were at the helm. If they are looking for someone with high-level customer service skills, highlight your experience working with difficult customers.

Resume Tip: Consider nixing the fancy template. You can certainly get elaborate resume templates both free and paid, but you may sooner or later find them to be little more than a big frustration. Because you will be tailoring your resume over and over again, elements of that fancy formatting may be lost or disrupted over time – leaving you frustrated with a funky-looking mess. There is also some concern some resume formats may not be read properly by screening software which we will talk a little more about below.

Experience You Shouldn’t Leave Out

Many companies look for prior telecommuting experience when considering candidates. This can demonstrate your ability to work independently, and possibly show that you have an idea of the work arrangement and what’s required in this unique situation. Therefore, if you have any remote experience, flaunt it.

You can include freelance projects and temporary work assignments. If your current or previous employer let you work from home on occasion, point that out. FlexJobs has some great tips about where to highlight that experience.

Good Skills to Put on a Resume

As for what skills to include on your resume, the job description is a good place to start. Most companies will let you know the specific skill set they are looking for. You won’t want to copy their list word for word, but you will want to mirror some of their language and choose those skills that are relevant to what they are looking for.

For example: If you are applying for a sales position, you won’t want to focus on your automotive skills. Instead, you will want to highlight skills like marketing, client services, etc .

Key Skills for Any Work-at-Home Resume

There are a few skills you should include on a telecommuting resume regardless of the job you are applying for:

  • Technical know-how – This is perhaps the most important skill you will need when working remotely. You can’t call down to the IT desk if your computer locks up during your shift. You don’t need to be a tech whiz, but you do need to know the basics of turning it off and back on, Googling for solutions, etc .
  • Writing and communication skills – Communication can be a lot harder when it’s by email only. Stress your ability to communicate well. Back it up with an error-free, misspelling-free resume.
  • Decision-making skills – You can’t simply put a customer on hold and run over to your boss’ desk if you have a question. If you have an article due this afternoon and a question comes up, you can’t afford to wait for an editor to respond tomorrow. When working from home, you need to have the confidence to make decisions.
  • Reliable and dependent – Many people don’t make it in the work-at-home world because they need the structure and accountability of punching that clock or knowing the boss is looking over their shoulder. The number one thing companies are looking for in remote workers is the ability to work independently. Most large companies don’t want to micromanage. They want you to show up when you say you are going to show up and do the job you promised to do.

How to Write a Resume Summary

Most entry-level telecommuting resumes don’t include the Objective commonly seen in on-site roles. Many work-at-home jobs don’t come with the opportunity to move up in ranks that eventually lead to a corner office and management role. Therefore, you can feel a little more at ease not having to state your today-to-retirement employment plan.

In the Objective’s place, include a summary of why you are a good fit for the job. Focus on just a few strong points. Don’t make it about you and don’t include things like how you need this job because you need a lot of time off, and so forth. Those things don’t make you look like a serious candidate.

This summary may also come in handy if you don’t have the opportunity to include a cover letter when submitting your resume through online application software.

What Else Should I Put on a Resume?

Don’t forget your contact information . You may not need to include your mailing or physical address, but you should make sure your email address is on your resume in case your resume gets separated from the rest of your online application.

If the job you are applying to has an education requirement , even if it’s a GED or high school diploma, you should mention your education. If your degree could come in handy or make you stand out from the competition, include it. If the job doesn’t require any formal education, you can focus on those skills instead.

Important Resume Phrases

As if creating a resume wasn’t stressful enough, you may have heard whispers that your application is being reviewed by a machine as opposed to a real person. True story. The use of applicant tracking systems, or ATS, is a common practice in the work-at-home world. And it’s understandable. Some companies report receiving hundreds, if not thousands, of applications for every one opening. That’s a lot of manpower to view each of those by hand!

To narrow applicants down, many companies will run those resumes through an ATS that will pull out the best matches based on a ranking algorithm. Every system uses a different algorithm, but most look at skills, employment history, etc . Keywords are perhaps the most important thing an ATS looks for and the reason it is so important to tailor each resume to the job at hand. ( Virtual Vocations has some more in-depth information on ATS if you really want to get down to the nitty-gritty of how it works.)

For example: If you are applying for a virtual assistant job for which the company has listed requirements as “Dropbox, MS Office, Google Docs, Evernote, Asana, Expensify, CRMs” and you simply put “familiar with popular online tools and software,” you may not get the ATS score needed to move onto the next round. If it says you need to be familiar with “Hootsuite, Blogger, WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube” and you simply use the terms “blogging” and “social media” in your resume, you may get passed over.

Things You Can Leave Off

There are some things your work-at-home resume doesn’t need:

  • Objective – We discussed this earlier. Include a summary of qualifications instead.
  • References – Unless they specifically ask for them, don’t include them. Most entry-level work-at-home jobs will not ask for them.

I’m Afraid of Being Discriminated Against Because of My Age

I get this question frequently. From Monster , don’t include dates for your education. It also isn’t necessary to include all of your work experience and those dates. Your recent experience is likely all that will be taken into consideration anyway.

What About Employment Gaps?

This is another frequently asked question among my community. After all, many of you are stay-at-home moms who may have been out of the workforce for a while.

Think hard about roles you have done while out of the traditional workforce. You can certainly include freelance gigs, volunteer roles, and part-time jobs on your resume. Maybe you helped out at your church’s Vacation Bible School every summer. Maybe you have taken in a few kids to babysit or cleaned a few houses over the years. Maybe you helped your PTA organize their largest fundraiser to date. All of these things matter and can be listed.

People voting in local elections in England on 2 May will need to provide photo ID.

It is the second year the requirement has been in place - but in 2023,  14,000 people couldn't cast their ballot because they didn't take ID to the polling booth.

Here's everything you need to know to avoid being caught out:

We have been reporting today that there's a lengthy list of MPs taking part in the London Marathon today - with one MP running for the 18th time ( see post at 11.27am ).

But none so far have taken the title for fastest-ever MP to run the race from Matthew Parris. 

In 1985, he ran the marathon in 2 hours, 32 minutes.

The Times columnist and former Conservative MP told Sky News he is "intensely proud, inordinately proud" at the achievement. 

"I would almost think it is the thing of which I am most proud in my entire political career," he said.

"I had trained so intensely. 

"Up hill, down dale - I would run into the House of Commons for a vote and run back after the vote."

He said he even got stopped by the police once running back from a vote. 

"It was a better result than I could have expected, so I was very proud," he said.

A power-sharing agreement between the SNP and the Greens at Holyrood is under threat after the Scottish government ditched a key climate change target.

The Scottish Green Party has said a vote on the deal, to be held at a forthcoming extraordinary general meeting (EGM), would be binding.

The date of the assembly and the crunch ballot has yet to be announced.

There is unhappiness among Green Party members after the SNP announced the Scottish government was scrapping its commitment to cut emissions by 75% by 2030. 

The Rainbow Greens, the party's LGBT wing, has also criticised the announcement, which came on the same day that the prescription of puberty blockers for new patients under the age of 18, at the gender identity service in Glasgow, would be paused.

The decision followed a landmark review of gender services for under-18s in England and Wales.

Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said he would be urging members to back the power-sharing agreement so the party could "put Green values into practice" in government.

Writing on X, he said "many" members had been calling for an EGM to discuss the future of the agreement.

But Mr Harvie said: "As part of the Scottish government, we're making a difference on a far bigger scale than ever before."

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is "appalled" by an exchange at a pro-Palestinian protest in which the Met Police threatened to arrest an "openly Jewish" man, a government source has told Sky News.

Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley is facing calls to resign after antisemitism campaigner Gideon Falter was threatened with arrest near the protest march in London ( see post at 08.36am ).

Mr Falter, the chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, said Jewish Londoners cannot have confidence in the Met under Sir Mark's leadership and accused the commissioner of "victim blaming".

Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho earlier told Sky News the incident was "completely wrong" and that "what happens next" with regard to Sir Mark was a "matter for the Labour London mayor" ( see post at 08.40am ).

Sky News understands that Sir Mark does still retain the confidence of London mayor Sadiq Khan (see post at 11.46am) .

Liz Truss has much more in common with Donald Trump than just the first three letters of his surname.

Despite presenting themselves as "outsiders", both enjoyed substantial political careers and reached the top of their profession as prime minister of the UK and president of the United States respectively.

In both cases, their periods in power ended in ways that outraged their opponents and many in their own Conservative and Republican parties. Economic chaos brought on by her rash policies forced Truss out of office after just 49 days in 10 Downing Street.

Trump lost the 2020 election, refused to accept his defeat and praised the mob who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to keep him in the White House.

Many thought they were finished for good. But like those who had laughed at their ambitions earlier in their careers, the nay-sayers were wrong again. Both have been reprieved and continue to be respected as forces in their parties.

Conservative MP Mark Menzies has been suspended from the parliamentary party in light of allegations he abused local Tory party funds to pay off "bad people".

Mark Menzies strongly disputes the claims which also include accusations he used campaign funds to pay his personal medical bills.

On the Conservatives' investigation into the claims, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News this week action was being taken "swiftly".

He added: "I think it is important to stress that the MP in question here denies the allegations and so on the basis of fairness and proper justice, I think it's important to mention that."

The head of the Met Police is to meet Jewish community leadership groups amid a row over the force threatening to arrest an "openly Jewish" man.

Sir Mark Rowley will meet representatives from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council and Community Security Trust (CST). 

Confirming the meeting, the Board of Deputies of British Jews said they would be discussing this "serious issue".

Sir Mark is facing calls to resign after antisemitism campaigner Gideon Falter was threatened with arrest near a pro-Palestinian march in London ( see post at 08.36am ).

Campaign Against Antisemitism have told Sky News they are not attending the meeting.

Sky News understands the meeting is expected to take place on Thursday.
