1.1 Mode of Nutrition in Plants

Plants have the unique ability to produce their own food, setting them apart from other living beings.

They utilize sunlight, minerals, water, and carbon dioxide present in their surroundings to prepare their food.

The process by which plants convert these raw materials into food is known as photosynthesis.

During photosynthesis, plants use chlorophyll, a green pigment found in their cells, to capture sunlight energy.

The captured sunlight energy is then used to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, a form of sugar.

Glucose serves as the primary source of energy for the plant's growth, development, and metabolic processes.

Along with glucose, plants also produce oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis, which is released into the atmosphere.

The minerals absorbed by plants from the soil play a crucial role in their growth, as they provide essential nutrients necessary for various cellular activities.

These nutrients not only support plant growth but also aid in repairing damaged body parts.

Through their autotrophic mode of nutrition, plants demonstrate their self-sufficiency in obtaining energy and nutrients from their environment.

1.2 Photosynthesis- Food Making Process in Plants

Leaves are considered food factories in plants, synthesizing food for all parts of the plant.

Different body parts transport raw materials to the leaves.

Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and transport them to the leaves through vessels.

Stomata, tiny pores on the leaves, absorb carbon dioxide, and their opening and closing are controlled by guard cells.

Chlorophyll, present in all leaves, is responsible for the green color and traps sunlight for photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water.

Photosynthesis is essential for maintaining life on Earth as it provides food for plants, which is the basis of the food chain.

During photosynthesis, chlorophyll uses sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrates.

The equation for photosynthesis is :

$\text{Carbon dioxide + water }\xrightarrow[\text{Sunlight}]{\text{Chlorophyll}}\text{ Carbohydrate + oxygen}$

Oxygen is released as a byproduct of photosynthesis, and the carbohydrate formed is converted to starch.

Starch in leaves indicates the occurrence of photosynthesis.

Plants with yellow, red, or multicolored leaves also perform photosynthesis as chlorophyll is present in these leaves.

Algae in stagnant water bodies, indicated by green slimy patches, also perform photosynthesis using chlorophyll.

Cells, the building blocks of every living body, play various functions, including gaseous exchange during photosynthesis.

Stomata control gaseous exchange, and their opening and closing are regulated by guard cells.

1.3 Other Modes of Nutrition in Plants

Not all plants contain chlorophyll:

Some plants, like Cuscuta, do not have chlorophyll.

Cuscuta is a yellow tubular plant that twines around the stems of other plants.

Heterotrophic nutrition in non-chlorophyll-containing plants:

Plants without chlorophyll obtain their food through heterotrophic nutrition.

They acquire nutrients from other living organisms.

Host-parasite relationship:

Non-chlorophyll-containing plants rely on a host plant to obtain nutrients.

When these plants deprive the host of its valuable nutrients, they are called parasites.

Plants as parasites:

We often associate parasites with insects and animals, but plants can also be parasites.

Non-chlorophyll-containing plants that depend on other organisms for nutrition are considered parasitic.

Insectivorous plants:

Some plants, like the pitcher plant, have pitcher-shaped structures formed from modified leaves.

The pitcher plant captures insects (prey) when they fall into the pitcher.

Hairs directed downwards inside the pitcher prevent the insects from escaping.

These plants are known as insectivorous plants as they consume insects for nutrition.

1.4 Saprotrophs

Mushroom's Nutritional Mode: Unlike plants, mushrooms do not contain chlorophyll and cannot perform photosynthesis. Instead, they obtain their food through a process known as saprophytic nutrition. This involves secreting digestive juices and chemicals onto decaying or dead organic matter, extracting nutrients from them. Mushrooms are considered saprotrophs in this nutrition mode.

Fungi Growth on Various Surfaces: Fungi can be found growing on different surfaces such as leather, pickles, bread, and other materials that are kept in hot and humid conditions for extended periods. These fungi thrive on the presence of moisture and organic matter, aiding in their growth and decomposition process.

Fungi in Rainy Seasons: Rainy seasons often see an increase in the population of saprotrophic fungi. These fungi play a role in the spoilage of food and clothing during this time. Fungal spores, which can travel through the air, settle on wet surfaces and germinate, leading to fungal growth and the subsequent spoilage of items.

Symbiotic Relationships: In certain relationships between organisms, both parties benefit from their association. One example is the close association between certain fungi and plant roots. These fungi, known as mycorrhizae, derive nutrients from the plants while providing them with nitrogen in return. This mutualistic relationship benefits both organisms involved.

Lichens: Lichens are another example of a symbiotic relationship involving fungi. In lichens, fungi and algae coexist. The algae produce food through photosynthesis, while the fungus provides water, minerals, and a protective structure for the algae. This partnership allows both organisms to thrive in various environments.

1.5 How Nutrients are Replenished in the Soil

If plants use all the minerals and nutrients from the soil, the levels of these nutrients in the soil are supposed to go down. To replenish the nutrient content of the soil, farmers often add manures and fertilizers to the soil. In this way, the nutrients are replenished, and it will support the continued growth of plants on this soil.

In general, soils require plenty of nitrogen for their growth. After each harvest, the soil gets devoid of nitrogen. To have further plantation on these soils, farmers often grow leguminous crops that can increase the nitrogen content of the soil. These leguminous crops like pulses, grams, dal, etc. are in a symbiotic relationship with a bacteria called rhizobium, which fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil. The bacteria obtain food and shelter in return from the plants. Growing leguminous crops in the field reduces the need to add nitrogen-containing artificial fertilizers to the soil.

In this CBSE Class 7 Science Chapter 1 nutrition in plants, you learned about plants that are autotrophs. You also learned about different nutrition modes amongst plants like heterotrophic, saprophytic, parasitic, insectivorous and symbiotic.

Facts that Matter

All organisms take food and utilize it to get energy for growth, maintenance and various life processes.

Based on the mode of getting food, organisms are classified as autotrophs and heterotrophs.

Autotrophs prepare their own food using simple inorganic materials like carbon dioxide and water.

The essential requirements for photosynthesis are chlorophyll and sunlight.

Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot make food on their own and so they depend on autotrophs directly or indirectly for food.

Parasitic, saprophytic, insectivorous and symbiotic are the different modes of heterotrophic nutrition in plants.

Plants like Cuscuta are parasites as they take nutrition from the host plant.

Saprotrophs like Fungi obtain nutrition from dead and decaying organic matter.

Symbiotic relationship between Rhizobium and legumes helps in enriching the soil of the nitrogen that was lost.

Leaves of the plants prepare the food so they are called the food factory of the plant.

The important components of food are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

The Sun is the fundamental source of energy for all living organisms.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Science Chapter 1 - Nutrition In Plants

1. How does the fungus get its nutrition?

Fungus is a saprotroph. Its mode of nutrition is called the saprotrophic mode of nutrition. It takes its food from dead and decaying organic matter. The digestive juices of fungus convert the dead materials into a soluble form that gets absorbed.

2. Explain the process of how nutrients are replenished in the soil.

The plants absorb mineral nutrients from the soil. The fertilizers and manures containing various nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus need to be added from time to time to enrich the soil. Nitrogen gas is available in large amounts but plants cannot use it directly from the air. The bacterium Rhizobium lives in the roots of the leguminous plants. Rhizobium bacteria convert the non-usable form of nitrogen. In this way, the nutrients are replenished in the soil by using fertilizers and manures, and by sowing leguminous plants.

3. Explain the mechanism of eating insects by a pitcher plant.

The leaves of the pitcher plants are tailored into a pitcher-like structure. The tip of the leaves forms a lid that can open and close the mouth of the pitcher-like structure of the leaves. There is hair inside the pitcher, which is directed downwards. When an insect lands in the pitcher, it gets entangled in the hair. The pitcher secretes some digestive juices that help the plant digest the insect. Such insects eating plants are insectivorous plants. These plants do not get all the necessary nutrients from the soil. So, they are called partial heterotrophs.

4. Summarize briefly Chapter 1 of Class 7th Science NCERT Textbook?

In Class 7 Chapter 1 Nutrition in Plants, students are introduced to topics related to plants and how they get nutrition for themselves. The concepts covered in these topics include the photosynthesis process, chlorophyll and stomata. The chapter also teaches other modes of nutrition in insectivorous plants.

Students also learn how nutrients are replenished in the soil and how atmospheric nitrogen is fixed in the soil through a bacterium called Rhizobium.

5. Why should we grow crops inside greenhouses?

Factors like diseases, rodents, wind, and adverse climatic conditions cannot affect the crops grown in greenhouses. Therefore, growing crops  in greenhouses is beneficial for the farmers in the long run.

8. What do you understand by photosynthesis according to Chapter 1 of Class 7th Science NCERT Textbook?

During photosynthesis, the light energy is converted into chemical energy by green plants and other organisms. Chloroplasts are tiny particles found inside plant cells that perform photosynthesis. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and water from the earth via their roots. The Sun gives out light energy. The leaves release the oxygen that has been generated into the air. Since it is an important topic, do understand it properly along with all its components such as chloroplasts and so on.

Virtual Field Trips in Science Methods

Screenshot of a web page showing six thumbnail pictures of exhibits with the words 'Let"s Pick an Exhibit to Visit'

In my undergraduate class, Methods of Teaching Science, a routine assignment to plan a field trip for students, quickly turned into something much more once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the country shut down. Teachers throughout the country had to get more creative and think outside of the box to continue to make learning fun and interesting while educating virtually. Businesses began to feel the same, so they started to make “virtual visits.” This led to the idea of incorporating a “virtual field trip” into the college level teacher preparation class.

Screen shot of the San Diego Zoo Web site with a picture of the entrance and the words San Diego Zoo

This assignment was started with the instructor before me, I just reformatted it to fit my course. It was a great way for undergraduate teacher candidates to learn how to use technology to make their instruction engaging and fun, all while tying the real world to learning in an authentic manner.

The assignment shared a variety of ways to add in a “virtual” component. Some teacher candidates used webcams that the locations set up while others incorporated videos that toured different facilities and locations. How the virtual visit was presented to students depended on the lesson, activity, location, etc. Some teacher candidates had their “students” taking a self-guided tour through websites while others would “present” to them on a screen in the front of the room, or possibly a “zoom” style guest speaker with someone at the specific location.

Overall, the teacher candidates found this assignment to be challenging, however, very beneficial. They were introduced to another strategy to add to their teaching “toolbox.”

What activities will be offered during a virtual field trip? Would there be a narrator explaining what the user sees or will it just be a visual experience?

This would depend on the location and/or purpose. I had a student who took us to the San Diego Zoo to see animals in their habitats. She shared the webcams from a variety of animal locations throughout the zoo. This student was also thinking ahead, because live webcams show what is happening right then (sometimes the animals are not cooperating) so she had placed videos that the zoo had saved and placed on their websites as backups within her lesson. This way she was sure that her students would be able to see what was needed for learning to occur. Another student took us to the Air and Space Museum. During her lesson, she shared a recorded tour of the museum; picking a few areas for the visit; the ones that matched her purpose/lesson outcome.

In completing this assignment, students learned that there are a vast number of resources readily available to them and that these resources could enhance their lessons. These virtual field trips took us to locations that we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to visit. They learned that adding in this real-world component made their lessons come to life and be more interesting and fun. Some takeaways…they didn’t have to use everything they found about a particular location or everything that that location offered. Some locations have made materials for teachers to use with students virtually, and while these are extremely helpful, they weren’t necessarily needed; especially if the objective/outcome my students were working towards didn’t match that of the lesson/activity the location created.

How did this assignment help enhance everyday instruction?

My students quickly learned that they could enhance many of their lessons with what they learned from this assignment. They could use these “field trips”, or parts of them, for a variety of purposes; at the beginning of their lessons to get the students excited and engaged in a certain topic, during their instruction to bring the topic to life, and even at the end as a way to enhance or extend the students learning and take it to another level.

Which location was the students’ favorite place to plan and visit?

Good question. I'm not sure, but if I had to pick one, I would say riding the roller coaster at Disney World and then discussing the physics behind roller coasters.

Any future plans with this assignment?

I do plan on using this assignment again this semester. I feel this assignment is beneficial and an activity that they will remember and want to take into their own classrooms one day.  One day we may test-pilot these with students. Originally, last semester, we were going to use them with our field experience class of students; however, it didn’t play out (COVID interfered). Maybe one day!

How NASA Tracked the Most Intense Solar Storm in Decades

May 2024 has already proven to be a particularly stormy month for our Sun. During the first full week of May, a barrage of large solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched clouds of charged particles and magnetic fields toward Earth, creating the strongest solar storm to reach Earth in two decades — and possibly one of the strongest displays of auroras on record in the past 500 years.

We’ll be studying this event for years. It will help us test the limits of our models and understanding of solar storms.

Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla

Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla

Acting Director of NASA’s Moon to Mars (M2M) Space Weather Analysis Office

“We’ll be studying this event for years,” said Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla, acting director of NASA’s Moon to Mars (M2M) Space Weather Analysis Office. “It will help us test the limits of our models and understanding of solar storms.”

The first signs of the solar storm started late on May 7 with two strong solar flares. From May 7 – 11, multiple strong solar flares and at least seven CMEs stormed toward Earth. Eight of the flares in this period were the most powerful type, known as X-class, with the strongest peaking with a rating of X5.8. (Since then, the same solar region has released many more large flares, including an X8.7 flare — the most powerful flare seen this solar cycle — on May 14.)

Traveling at speeds up to 3 million mph, the CMEs bunched up in waves that reached Earth starting May 10, creating a long-lasting geomagnetic storm that reached a rating of G5 — the highest level on the geomagnetic storm scale, and one that hasn’t been seen since 2003.

“The CMEs all arrived largely at once, and the conditions were just right to create a really historic storm,” said Elizabeth MacDonald, NASA heliophysics citizen science lead and a space scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

When the storm reached Earth, it created brilliant auroras seen around the globe. Auroras were even visible at unusually low latitudes, including the southern U.S. and northern India. The strongest auroras were seen the night of May 10, and they continued to illuminate night skies throughout the weekend. Thousands of reports submitted to the NASA-funded Aurorasaurus citizen science site are helping scientists study the event to learn more about auroras.

“Cameras — even standard cell phone cameras — are much more sensitive to the colors of the aurora than they were in the past,” MacDonald said. “By collecting photos from around the world, we have a huge opportunity to learn more about auroras through citizen science.”

Red and green streaks of an aurora radiate out from the center of the photo. Black silhouettes of trees line the edge.

By one measure of geomagnetic storm strength, called the disturbance storm time index which dates back to 1957, this storm was similar to historic storms in 1958 and 2003. And with reports of auroras visible to as low as 26 degrees magnetic latitude, this recent storm may compete with some of the lowest-latitude aurora sightings on record over the past five centuries, though scientists are still assessing this ranking.

“It’s a little hard to gauge storms over time because our technology is always changing,” said Delores Knipp, a research professor in the Smead Aerospace Engineering Science Department and a senior research associate at the NCAR High Altitude Observatory, in Boulder, Colorado. “Aurora visibility is not the perfect measure, but it allows us to compare over centuries.”

MacDonald encourages people to continue submitting aurora reports to Aurorasaurus.org , noting that even non-sightings are valuable for helping scientists understand the extent of the event.

Leading up to the storm, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, which is responsible for forecasting solar storm impacts, sent notifications to operators of power grids and commercial satellites to help them mitigate potential impacts.

Warnings helped many NASA missions brace for the storm, with some spacecraft preemptively powering down certain instruments or systems to avoid issues. NASA's ICESat-2 — which studies polar ice sheets — entered safe mode, likely because of increased drag due to the storm.

Looking Forward

Better data on how solar events influence Earth's upper atmosphere is crucial to understanding space weather's impact on satellites, crewed missions, and Earth- and space-based infrastructure. To date, only a few limited direct measurements exist in this region. But more are coming. Future missions, such as NASA’s Geospace Dynamics Constellation (GDC) and Dynamical Neutral Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (DYNAMIC), will be able to see and measure exactly how Earth’s atmosphere responds to the energy influxes that occur during solar storms like this one. Such measurements will also be valuable as NASA sends astronauts to the Moon with the Artemis missions and, later, to Mars.

An image of the Sun shows a bright flash in the bottom right side where a solar flare erupts.

The solar region responsible for the recent stormy weather is now turning around the backside of the Sun, where its impacts can’t reach Earth. However, that doesn’t mean the storm is over. NASA’s Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO), currently located at about 12 degrees ahead of Earth in its orbit, will continue watching the active region an additional day after it is no longer visible from Earth.

“The active region is just starting to come into view of Mars,” said Jamie Favors, director for the NASA Space Weather Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We’re already starting to capture some data at Mars, so this story only continues.”

A close-up view of a spiral galaxy fills most of the scene. It has a bright, glowing spot at its core, broad spiral arms that hold many dark threads of dust, and pink glowing spots across the disk that mark areas of star formation. A faint halo that bleeds into the dark background surrounds the galaxy’s disk.

Hubble Captures a Bright Spiral in the Queen’s Hair

This illustration is awash in bright blues, with only areas of the black background of space peeking out near the edges. Just above center is a large white spiral galaxy that is forming within a large cloud of blue gas. Its spiral arms twirl clockwise. Immediately around the galaxy’s edges are larger light blue dots. The gas appears thicker and brighter blue below the galaxy and toward the bottom left in what looks like a loose, extended column. Other wispy blue gas appears all around the galaxy, extending to every edge of the illustration. There are two additional spiral galaxies, though they are about half the size of the one at the center. They appear toward the top left and bottom right, and both are connected to regions of blue gas. Several bright knots dot the brightest blue areas near the center, and toward the top right. The background is clearer and more obviously black along a wider area at the left edge, a sliver along the top right, and in triangles toward the bottom right corner.
