JetBlue introduces new seat fee as it seeks to boost profitability

JetBlue Airways is looking for all the ways it can maximize revenue.

Over the past few days, the New York-based carrier rolled out a new seat-assignment fee, dubbed "Core Preferred," on all its flights.

This new fee is for aisle and window seat assignments in more favorable locations on the plane, such as those in front of the exit row.

These seats aren't different from the regular JetBlue economy experience; the only upgrade is that you are closer to the front of the plane.

There doesn't seem to be any other benefit to splurging for one of these seats aside from the preferred location and being able to deplane faster.

All JetBlue Mosaic elite members can assign these seats for free. A look at some sample routes shows that these new Core Preferred seats start from $10 for a Boston-to-Los Angeles flight, $21 for a New York-to-West Palm Beach, Florida, flight and up to $49 on a New York-to-Paris flight.

As you can see, the price doesn't seem to be correlated with distance, which is similar to JetBlue's new strategy for selling Even More Space seats based on more in-demand flights.

This new fee is separate from JetBlue's existing Even More Space offering, which includes up to seven inches of additional legroom, early boarding and priority security.

Core Preferred seats have an average 32 inches of pitch and feature seatback TVs, as well as power outlets and USB ports on most planes.

If only paid seat assignments are available on your flight, JetBlue will provide you with a complimentary seat during check-in or at the airport.

In explaining the move, a carrier spokesperson shared that "the introduction of preferred seating, in line with many other airlines, allows us to continue to offer our low fares and great service, while making progress toward returning to profitability."

This new fee isn't necessarily a revolution in the industry. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have long charged extra for preferred seats in more favorable locations; even JetBlue's ultra-low-cost competitors charge higher prices for seats closer to the front of the plane.

Of course, for passengers, this new fee is no doubt a devaluation of the JetBlue experience, especially for those who usually book far in advance and have gotten used to getting their pick of the best seats.

Though this move was likely in the works for a while, it comes as JetBlue seems to be laser-focused on maximizing revenues and "closing the gap" on product offerings, as incoming CEO Joanna Geraghty said on the company's recent fourth-quarter earnings calls.

The company's takeover of Spirit Airlines was recently blocked , and the carrier continues to underperform financially relative to the broader aviation industry.

Plus, with the upcoming CEO transition, JetBlue is at a pivotal moment for defining its strategy for the upcoming years.

However, one thing is clear: This new Core Preferred seat assignment likely isn't the only change coming to JetBlue's fares and products.

"We think there are potentially additional product offerings we could introduce that tap into a broader spectrum of customers," Geraghty said.

JetBlue Airways is a prominent American airline that started in 1998, intending to dominate the low-cost airline space. The company is headquartered on Long Island, New York, and made its first flight in 2000 at JFK International Airport. Since then, the company has grown to the point where it flies over 30 million passengers on 925 daily trips throughout the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

A fleet of 286 planes ensures the company can take passengers to over 82 cities in 22 countries. Its IATA code is B6, and the ICAO code is JBU, signifying its operations from the JFK International Airport. Its aircraft include the Airbus A series and the Embraer, two fan favorites.

And since these aircraft have different configurations, the airline encourages passengers to use the JetBlue seating chart to get familiar with the layouts. This strategy also ties to JetBlue’s plan to put the customers’ needs first beyond just reducing the cost of flying. And that explains JetBlue’s success in its niche, considering how relatively young the company is.

A standard JetBlue Mint seating chart shows detailed seating arrangements in aircraft cabins, points out the preferred seats, and highlights features like expected legroom, seat widths and recline angles, and comfort levels. And since each plane model has a difference, even regular passengers would benefit from checking the chart before booking to increase their chances of flying comfortably.

JetBlue Airways planes have cabins like Business, Even More Space, and Core, servicing different passengers with different amenities for different prices. There are also versions of their planes with Mint in their names to highlight their premium nature. The A321 Classic with Mint and the A321neo with Mint are examples, and passengers need to look through their JetBlue seat selection charts to tell the difference between them and other aircraft.

Passengers looking for an improved flying experience from standard Economy flights can purchase Even More Space tickets. For aircraft models that don’t have Business seats like the Airbus A320 (320), Even More Space seats are at the front of the plane. Sometimes, they are between two Core cabins and close to exit rows in the middle of the plane, where they are often among the best JetBlue airplane seats.

The JetBlue seats in this cabin have between 4 and 8 inches of extra pitch. Even More Space cabin occupants enjoy first access to overhead bins, and if they use the JetBlue seats map, they can choose preferred seats like 6ABEF on the Airbus A321 (32S) Mint. They could also choose 11th-row seats on the Airbus A320 (320) and enjoy more space to stretch their legs because of the exit passage in front of them.

Core seat JetBlue

The Core seats JetBlue planes use are similar to the Economy seats other airlines offer. They often take up the most space in the plane and are positioned behind the Business or JetBlue First Class seats and the Even More Space section.

Some seats in this cabin have misaligned windows, and the last row is close to the lavatory and galley. The good part is that JetBlue plane seats have thinner armrests, making them feel less restrictive to passengers. So, the seats in this cabin may be slightly more comfortable than other Economy seats.

These planes have the amenities to offer passengers a JetBlue First Class seating experience. They enjoy the comfort of seats that can recline 180 degrees to become flatbeds and, for some, Business suites with a privacy door. These amenities, however, are reserved for those who purchased JetBlue Mint seats in the Business cabin.

The best seats in this cabin are the Business Class suites because of the flatbed seats, extra space, privacy, and the occupants being among the first to board and alight. JetBlue Mint planes also have Even More Space and Core cabins, but they are behind the Business seats, and the occupants can only board after the latter have.

Yes, You Have To Pay For Seat Assignments With JetBlue’s Basic Fare

Up until November 2019, picking a seat on a JetBlue flight was included with even the least expensive ticket. That was until the introduction of Blue Basic (JetBlue’s version of basic economy) fares.

Here’s what JetBlue’s website says about these new fares .

We’ve heard you loud and clear, and are excited to offer you new fare options so you can choose what’s most valuable to you, such as ability to change or cancel, advance seat selection, boarding priority, points earned and more.

If you book a Blue Basic ticket, there are several changes from the typical JetBlue experience you’ve become accustomed to:

• Additional fee required to pick seats more than 24 hours before your flight
• Boarding with the last group
• Ticket changes are not permitted
• Cancellations forfeit the entire ticket price
• Same-day standby is not permitted
• Tickets earn 1 TrueBlue point per dollar spent

Both Blue Basic and Blue fares include a free carry-on bag and personal item (space limited). Neither of those fares includes a checked bag, but if you have the JetBlue Plus Card , you get the first checked bag free for the cardholder and up to three companions on the same reservation for both fare types.

If you’ve purchased a Blue Basic fare, you can pay for a seat assignment at any time, including paying for an Even More Space seat, which also includes boarding with Group 1. That could be a great deal depending on how much less a Blue Basic fare is from the Blue ticket price.

Final Thoughts

When booking with JetBlue, make sure to know what each fare type includes. While having a co-brand credit card or Mosaic status can override some of the restrictions with Blue Basic fares, some of them remain like not being able to make same-day changes, flying stand-by, or fee-free cancellations.

Beware – even if you pay for seat assignments, you likely won’t be able to sit together. We paid extra for seat assignments, but weren’t allowed to choose seating until 24 hours before the flight. At the 24 hour mark, my wife tried to log in to choose seats and the page kept refreshing with fewer choices and we couldn’t get seats together for our family. What a joke.

JetBlue Seat Selection: What You Need to Know

You booked your flight and are ready to travel, but where will you sit on the plane? Your ability to choose your seats with JetBlue depends on which fare you purchased and your elite status.

In this guide to JetBlue Airways seat selection, you’ll learn what you need to know to pick the best seats for your next flight, including any fees that apply and what the seating charts look like.

How JetBlue seat selection works

JetBlue operates a variety of seat types on its aircraft, including economy, Even More Space and Mint seats.

So, how much is seat selection on JetBlue? The answer depends on which fare class you buy and the flight selected.

Blue Basic passengers pay a fee to select seats more than 24 hours in advance, while everyone else can pick seats at no extra charge. Upgrades to Even More Space vary based on the flight and which seat you choose.

NerdWallet conducted an analysis of fees among U.S. domestic airlines. On average, JetBlue has one of the lowest seat selection fees at just $4 per passenger.

Your fees will vary based on your flight, fare class and seat selected. All fares, except Blue Basic, can choose any economy seat without paying extra.

Ticket types and seat selection rules

JetBlue offers five fare classes to meet passengers’ needs and budgets. Each fare class has different benefits and restrictions that passengers need to be aware of before buying their ticket.

Basic economy

Blue Basic fares are the basic economy tickets offered by JetBlue. These tickets have numerous restrictions that allow JetBlue to offer lower fares. Blue Basic tickets do not allow carry-on bags, and there is a fee for checking a bag.

Passengers cannot select their seat more than 24 hours in advance unless they’re willing to pay a JetBlue seat selection fee. There is a fee of $100 to $200 for changes or cancellations. Additionally, these fares only earn 1x Base TrueBlue points versus 3x points for other fares.

Core tickets are the standard economy seats on JetBlue flights. Passengers buying Blue, Blue Plus or Blue Extra fares choose these seats when booking their flight, at check-in or any time before departure.

Benefits of each fare class vary, but all three include a carry-on bag and charge no fees for changes or cancellations. They also earn 3x points for the flight. Blue Extra tickets offer the most benefits, including no fees for same-day switches or standby, early boarding and priority security access at available airports.

Even More Space

Even More Space seats provide up to 7 inches of extra legroom, early boarding and other benefits. Although Blue Basic fares do not include advance seat selection, these passengers can upgrade to Even More Space — for a fee — and select an available seat.

Mint fares are the premium cabin seats on JetBlue flights. These seats feature fully lie-flat seats, with adjustable firmness and a massage feature. There are three types of Mint class seats:

Mint passengers enjoy high-end dining, an artisan wine list, Wanderful wellness kits, Tuft & Needle sleep kits and more.

JetBlue seats for elite members

Elite members of JetBlue’s TrueBlue loyalty program are called Mosaic members. There are four levels of Mosaic elite status based on how many “tiles” a traveler has earned.

Mosaic members can upgrade their tickets to Even More Space seats at no extra charge if seats are available. Level 1 members can upgrade during check-in, while Level 2 and higher members get Even More Space seats during booking.

When you reach Mosaic 3, you get four certificates to upgrade your ticket to Mint seating, based on availability. At Mosaic 4, you receive an additional two certificates.

JetBlue partners with American Airlines to offer reciprocal benefits for elite members. AAdvantage Gold members and above receive complimentary Even More Space seats at check-in if they’re available.

The airline uses nine different types of planes, and each plane has a different layout. Your JetBlue seat selection varies based on which plane is flying your route. Before booking your flight, you can see which plane is flying and the seating configuration.

Pick your dates of travel, number of passengers, departure and arrival cities at jetblue.com. On the search results page, you’ll find a variety of flights to choose from.

Click on “Seats” to see which plane is flying and what JetBlue seat selection options are available.

You can also view the JetBlue seat map during the booking process. After selecting your flight, you’re prompted to select your flight before checking out.

How to pick seats on JetBlue

During the checkout process, you’re given the option of selecting your JetBlue seats. If you don’t select a seat when buying your ticket, you can choose later online, through the JetBlue mobile app or at check-in.

Blue Basic fares must pay a fee for selecting a seat more than 24 hours in advance of departure time. The price varies per flight and location of the seat you’ve chosen.

“Core” seats are available at no charge, and they are available for all passengers.

Passengers flying Mint class fares receive exclusive access to premium seats at the front of the plane. They can select their seat during checkout or at any time before their flight.

Check in rules.

JetBlue Airways Check-in can be done online (via the website or mobile app) or at the airport. Online check-in begins 24 hours before departure and ends 60 minutes before departure. Check-in desks open three hours before departure and close 60 minutes before departure. Kiosk check-in is not available 30 minutes or less before departure. Customers on domestic flights must be on board the aircraft 15 minutes before departure. Customers on international flights must be onboard 20 minutes before departure.

All fares include one personal item that fits under the JetBlue Airways seat in front of you. This could be a purse, daypack, laptop bag, or approved pet carrier. Personal items cannot exceed 43.2 x 33 x 20.32 cm. In addition, all Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra, and Mint fares include a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin. Including wheels and handles, carry-on bags must not exceed 55.88 x 35.56 x 22.86 cm. JetBlue Airways Checked bags exceeding 157.48 cm in overall dimensions (length + width + height) or 22.68 kg will also incur a fee.

Unaccompanied minors

JetBlue offers a special service for children ages 5 to 14 who are flying solo. The Unaccompanied Minor Program (UMNR) is mandatory for children between the ages of five and 14. A child who turns 14 and is traveling alone is no longer considered an unaccompanied minor and must be registered as an adult; however, customers may request additional assistance in these circumstances.

Infants are considered to be children under two years of age. A child may travel as a lap infant from 3 days to the day he or she turns 2 years old. There is no charge for lap infants. If you wish, you can buy a seat on the JetBlue Airways plane for an infant at the infant fare. Children over two years of age must have their own seat on the plane. If one adult is traveling with two infants, one seat must be purchased for one infant and the other may be held on the lap.

Small dogs and cats may travel in the JetBlue Airways cabin. Only one pet is allowed in each carrier. Pet carrier dimensions may not exceed 43.18 cm L x 31.75 cm W x 21.59 cm H, and total weight of your pet and carrier may not exceed 20 pounds. No more than two pets are allowed per traveler, each in its own carrier.

Seat Assignment

Hello everyone,

I am scheduled to fly domestically tomorrow at 4pm with a friend(so roughly in 23 hours). I have checked-in but for JetBlue they want us to pay additionally for seat selection. Is it okay if we don't assign our seats and just arrive at the airport? Will they just put us in random seats? Thank you!

What to Do if You Don't Have a Seat Assignment for a Flight

When you buy a ticket for a flight, airlines often conveniently fail to spell out all the other fees you’ll be responsible for, like the price of a crappy boxed meal, spotty wifi, and often, an actual seat assignment.

While checking in online for her JetBlue flight, our managing editor, Virginia, was recently faced with the dilemma of whether she should pay $90 for a seat assignment just to guarantee herself a window seat; otherwise, she’d risk heading to the airport and relying on the whims of an airline attendant to grab a preferred seat.

“Is this scam new?!” she asked the Lifehacker staff. And judging by a few of our responses, it’s hardly a unique experience with airlines—I’ve also been in this uneasy position, faced with the option of buying an aisle seat to calm my fears of being saddled with a middle one or somehow being bumped from my flight altogether.

Why does this happen? Well, the obvious answer is that airlines likely understand this fear and use it to their advantage to make a little extra money off your ticket. (For more practical reasons, airlines may also block off sections of seats to make room for those with elite status, airline crew or those passengers with specific needs, like families and children so they aren’t separated.)

And truthfully, your options as a passenger are limited; yes, you could buy an upgrade and guarantee a particular seat for yourself. You might benefit from this, if, say, you want to be absolutely sure you’ll be sat in an aisle seat. Or if you just feel like having a little extra legroom and are able to pay a premium for it.

But if you’re willing to give up the absolute guarantee of an aisle or window seat, don’t give in. Why? Well, chances are you are not the only passenger in this situation. If you wait to receive an assignment, you might just receive an aisle or window anyway. (And if you are given a middle seat, you can then use this as an opportunity to buy an upgrade if you like.)

Depending on the airline, if you’ve just purchased a flight and don’t have a seat assignment, typically, you should wait until 24 hours before your flight when your check-in window opens (and blocked seats become available). Often, an airline will automatically assign you a seat at this time—which could very well mean a window or aisle seat—saving you from having to fork out a little extra cash on a premium seat.

If you don’t have a seat assignment after check-in begins, just wait until you arrive at the airport. I’ve had this exact situation happen on a JetBlue flight and received an aisle seat assignment at the airline counter. (A JetBlue customer support rep confirmed to me that you are guaranteed a seat on a flight, even if you don’t reserve one in advance.)

If you’re wondering whether you’ll score an aisle seat, consider your departure and arrival cities and when you’re departing; if you’re flying to or from a popular travel destination, the odds that you’re stuck with a middle seat might be higher. If your travel dates fall along weekdays, you might have better luck than traveling on heavy travel days like on Sundays.

And if you have specific needs, try contacting your airline by phone to inform them that you require special accomodations; depending on your exact needs, they may try to find you the best available seat. (I had food poisoning right before a 14-hour flight from Tokyo; I contacted the airline to inform them, and while they could not assign me a seat at that time, I very conveniently ended up with an aisle seat next to a restroom—which may have just been due to pure luck.)

And always, always download your airline’s app . You might be able to snag a better seat using the app, without having to wait in a long line at the gate.

Want to get somewhere for cheap? Basic economy fares promise to do just that, unbundling the benefits of regular economy tickets like carry-on baggage, seat selection and standard boarding. Blue Basic is JetBlue Airways’ version of a basic economy fare, and while it promises to get you to your destination, it doesn’t offer much else.

Let’s take a look at Blue Basic on JetBlue, how to book this type of ticket and ways to get good value when flying Blue Basic.

Those who purchase a Blue Basic ticket can expect a no-frills experience, though they’ll still be seated in standard economy class seats.

Here's what to expect with a Blue Basic ticket:

Baggage allowance: Those flying in Blue Basic are only allowed a personal item, with the exception of travelers heading to or from London. These transatlantic flights allow both a personal item and a carry-on bag. (Note that all Blue Basic fares will include a carry-on bag beginning Sept. 6, 2024, regardless of when the fare was purchased.)

Boarding: Blue Basic customers board the plane last, behind everyone else.

Check-in: Like regular economy customers, Blue Basic travelers will use the economy check-in line.

Seats: Economy class seats are up to 18.4 inches wide and will vary depending on the aircraft you’re flying. Expect seat pitch to be anywhere from 32 to 34 inches. Blue Basic passengers can pay to select a seat before check-in.

Baggage delivery: Blue Basic passengers will have their bags delivered at the same time as other economy class bags.

Food: All passengers receive free snacks and drinks when flying with JetBlue, including those with a Blue Basic ticket.

Changes and cancellations: Unlike JetBlue’s other seats, Blue Basic fares incur a fee if you need to change or cancel your ticket. You’ll pay $100 for flights in North and Central America and the Caribbean and $200 for flights elsewhere. For same-day switches, you’ll pay a $75 fee and no fare difference, similar to other JetBlue fares.

There are several differences between a JetBlue Blue Basic and Blue fare , but the most consequential is likely the flexibility to change or cancel your ticket. JetBlue Blue Basic fares cost $100 to modify for flights within North America, Central America and the Caribbean, or $200 for other routes, whereas Blue fares can be changed for no fee.

Other differences include:

Carry-on bags are not allowed with Blue Basic tickets (except for flights to/from London), while Blue fares are allotted one, regardless of route. (Note that all Blue Basic fares will include a carry-on bag beginning Sept. 6, 2024, regardless of when the fare was purchased.)

Advanced seat selection is an added fee for Blue Basic fares, whereas it's included for Blue fares.

Blue Basic tickets earn 1 base TrueBlue point per dollar spent, as well as 1 TrueBlue point as part of its online booking bonus. Blue fares and above, meanwhile, earn 3 TrueBlue points per dollar in either scenario.

Similarities across both fares include:

Both charge a $75 fee for same-day switches or standby.

Blue Basic and Blue fares charge extra for expedited security access through the airline's Even More Speed program.

Blue Basic tickets are available on all flights that JetBlue operates. Booking these tickets is simple, whether you’re paying with cash or redeeming your points.

First, you’ll want to navigate to JetBlue’s homepage at Jetblue.com.

From here, you can enter your desired flight route and dates. If using points, you can also tick the box titled “Use TrueBlue points.”

You’ll then be presented with the results of your search, which default to displaying Blue Basic pricing.

If you’re looking for other types of fares, you can toggle the search results on the left side of the page. Here you can compare Blue Basic versus Blue Plus, Blue Extra or Blue to see pricing and what each tier offers.

Once you’ve selected your preferred flight, you’ll be prompted with a notice that reviews all of the restrictions for Blue Basic tickets. You’ll need to acknowledge this before moving on with your booking.

You’ll then be taken through the checkout process, where you’ll verify your flight information and enter your traveler details.

During this step, you’ll also be able to select seats, add a checked bag, opt for priority security screening or add a pet booking.

All of these options incur an additional fee. The amount you’ll pay for a specific seat assignment will depend on where you’re sitting, as the example shows below.

Once you’ve selected or declined these options, you’ll be able to pay for and book your ticket.

If you’re booking a Blue Basic ticket, you’re likely interested in getting a good price for your flight. Here are several other ways to find value when flying JetBlue, from transferring points to earning elite status, to looking at other fare options.

Find cheap cash flights

JetBlue operates on a dynamic pricing system for its reward flights. This means that the number of points you’ll redeem will be directly tied to the cash price of a flight. Your best bet for good value — whether with cash or TrueBlue points — is to find a cheap cash flight.

To do so, flexibility is key, but so is knowing when to look for inexpensive fares . For example, NerdWallet’s research shows flying midweek is often cheaper than taking a weekend trip, and booking farther in advance can also get you more savings.

Transfer in your points

JetBlue partners with three different flexible point currencies , which means it’s easy to earn plenty of TrueBlue points. Each currency values its points slightly differently when it comes to transferring them to JetBlue:

JetBlue has foure tiers of Mosaic elite status: Mosaic 1 through Mosaic 4. Those with elite status on JetBlue receive a bevy of benefits, including free checked bags, complimentary premium seats and extra bonus points when flying.

We looked at restrictions and allowances, including baggage, miles earning and trip modification policies. Here's how they stacked up:

JetBlue is the latest airline to sell basic economy — here's what the most restrictive fare includes

• JetBlue will sell a new basic economy fare, the airline said on Tuesday.

JetBlue will begin offering basic economy fares to passengers, the airline announced Tuesday .

Basic economy fares have proliferated in recent years as traditional airlines have sought to compete with ultra-low-cost-carriers, which undercut legacy carriers on fare, but charge extra for everything from carry-on bags and drinks to assigned seats.

The new "Blue Basic" fare doesn't allow any changes or cancellations, including same-day changes or standbys, which most other JetBlue fares allow for a fee. Although they do allow a checked bag, there's a fee for seat assignments before check-in, and passengers with the basic fare board the plane last, meaning there's a chance there won't be room left in the overhead bins.

Additionally, customers who book Blue Basic fares will only earn two frequent flyer points per dollar spent on the fare. Other JetBlue  fare types earn six points per dollar.

On-board services, including snacks and drinks, will still be included.

In many cases as basic economy fares are introduced, fares have not actually been substantially lower. Instead, they've helped airlines increase ancillary revenue as customers purchase things like seat assignments, or choose to purchase a standard fare instead.

On a page announcing the changes, JetBlue said the fares would begin rolling out on Tuesday.

How to Score a First-class Seat This Summer, According to Flight Attendants

Nabbing a first-class upgrade might be easier than you think.

This summer, picture breezing through airport security, settling into a plush first-class seat, and sipping Champagne before takeoff — all without breaking the bank. It might sound like a fantasy, but there may be a few ways to score that coveted flight upgrade.

Upgrading to first class isn't just about luck — it's about strategy. Understanding the inner workings of airline operations and knowing when and how to approach its staff can significantly increase your chances. And with the busy summer travel season underway, it's the perfect time to discover these insider tips from flight attendants for nabbing that first-class seat on your next flight.

Know your rights.

Whether it’s a tech glitch or operational error, mistakes happen and airlines often rectify them with upgrades. If your flight is delayed or there’s a seating issue, don’t hesitate to ask about compensation options . "Upgrades and comps are often given to rectify passenger issues," says Delta flight attendant J. Lauren. Airlines aim to maintain customer satisfaction and may provide upgrades or other benefits to ensure a positive experience.

Being proactive and politely inquiring about available options can make a difference. Issues such as lost luggage , meal service errors, or unexpected changes in flight schedules might also work in your favor.

Timing is everything.

The summer travel season, spanning from June to September, is notorious for overbooked flights . Airlines often oversell seats, anticipating no-shows, but when everyone turns up, they face a dilemma.

This is where you can benefit. Overbooked flights require gate agents to shift passengers around, which may bring about an unexpected upgrade. "Overbooking is common in the summer, and it often results in passengers being moved around, leading to upgrades," says Lauren. The trick is to travel during these peak months and stay flexible and alert.

Sometimes, airlines offer vouchers, miles, or immediate upgrades to manage overbooked situations efficiently. "Stay close to your designated gate to catch any last-minute upgrade opportunities," suggests Lauren. Being visible and approachable shows your interest and flexibility, which gate agents appreciate when making quick decisions.

Report negative experiences to the flight crew.

In-flight discrepancies can be a prime opportunity to secure upgrades . Issues like a broken headrest, inactive in-flight entertainment, or seat malfunctions may prompt flight attendants to offer you vouchers, points , or even cash for future flights in real-time — all of which you can use to upgrade your seat on your next trip. Ultimately, staying informed about your rights as a passenger will empower you to take advantage of these situations effectively.

Maximize loyalty program loopholes.

Keira Vaughn, an American Airlines flight attendant, says loyalty programs are your ticket to securing a top spot on the upgrade list. Being a member of these programs not only earns you miles, but it also keeps you at the highest priority for upgrades. 

“Frequent fliers who demonstrate loyalty to an airline are often rewarded with first-class seats over nonmembers,” adds Vaughn. This is especially true during peak travel times when airlines are keen on ensuring their most valued customers are happy. The key is to fly often and always use your loyalty number when booking. Airlines track these details and prioritize passengers who regularly choose their services.

Stay strategically positioned.

Positioning yourself at the airport is crucial. On the day of travel, stay close to your gate. This keeps you informed about potential upgrades or offers. When gate agents make announcements about overbooked flights or ask for volunteers to take later flights, you’ll be the first to respond.

Additionally, arrive at the airport early to increase your chances of securing an upgrade. Early check-ins can sometimes result in better seat assignments, and being at the gate ahead of time allows you to be first in line when upgrade opportunities arise. “Chatting with the gate agents before boarding begins can also help you stay on their radar for any last-minute seat changes,” adds Vaughn.

Lastly, keep an eye on the flight status and any announcements related to delays or cancellations. Being proactive and ready to act can place you in a favorable position when the airline needs to accommodate passengers quickly, according to Lauren. Utilize airline apps or subscribe to text alerts to stay updated on any changes to your flight status.

JetBlue passenger alleges severe burns due to hot tea served amid turbulence

A passenger is seeking $1.5 million in damages from JetBlue after she allegedly sustained severe burns from "scalding hot" tea served during a period of turbulence, according to a complaint.

According to the complaint, filed on June 24, the "dangerously hot cup of tea" was allegedly served to Tahjana Lewis while there was "ongoing turbulence" with the "fasten seat belt" sign turned on. The complaint claims this decision was "dangerous and hazardous" given the conditions at the time.

The alleged incident occurred on May 15 aboard Flight 2237 traveling from Orlando, Florida, to Hartford, Connecticut, according to the complaint. Lewis, the plaintiff, claimed she was seated in the row directly behind the passenger who ordered the drink on this flight, the complaint states.

Lewis reportedly suffered from "severe" and "disfiguring" burns on her upper chest, breasts, legs, left buttocks and right arm, with "disfigurement and scarring on all five burn-affected regions," according to the complaint.

"That's gross negligence," Lewis' attorney, Edward Jazlowiecki, told ABC News regarding JetBlue's purported decision to serve drinks during what he called "serious" turbulence. "Absolutely gross negligence."

JetBlue did not immediately respond to ABC News' requests for comment.

The complaint claims that JetBlue served this beverage "at a temperature that was unreasonably and dangerously hot beyond what is accepted in the food service industry or airline industry."

Jazlowiecki also said JetBlue "should have done something to assuage [ Lewis' ] pain." He claimed the crew did not ask if there were doctors on board, didn't divert or make an emergency landing, and that they "didn't offer her much help until she got off the plane."

According to Jazlowiecki, Lewis experienced second-degree possibly third-degree burns, and she will likely have to get skin grafting. He said she went to the emergency room immediately after the flight and consulted a skin specialist.

In addition to becoming "sore and partially disabled," the complaint claims that Lewis became limited in her ability to work and suffered from emotional damages.

Jazlowiecki also said Lewis was traveling alone with her 5-year-old daughter and that this incident was "extremely traumatic" for the child to witness.

THE difference between an anxiety-inducing long-haul flight and a downright pleasant one comes down to one thing: your seat. And as any seasoned traveller knows, there’s more to it than your mere cabin assignment.

With airlines making significant investments in first- and business-class cabins that focus on more space and more privacy, and even breaking up the business-class cabin into multiple different seat options, the journey really can be half the fun. But the latest seats are only installed on certain planes – which don’t fly every route – so you need to know where to look and what to choose (assuming they’re even available).

These are the best new premium airplane seats to look out for in the months ahead – and details on how to find them.

Lufthansa Allegris

Rather than redesign the front of the plane alone, Lufthansa has rethought its entire interior, from first through economy; the tailored Allegris design is already featured on long-haul A350-900s and is coming soon to the carrier’s new Boeing 787-9s. In business class, the innovative design includes cooling and heating features in the seats and an embedded tablet display (rather than endless buttons) to adjust all the ambient options, such as temperature and seat position. There are also more classic touches including sliding privacy doors, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless chargers and all-aisle access (correcting a common criticism of Lufthansa’s current cabin configuration).

Even within the business-class cabin there is variation. Some seats have additional legroom, while others have longer lie-flat beds; the descriptions of each are available when choosing your specific seat assignment. Some of these options come with ancillary fees: Those in the front row, for instance, have extra space and storage areas, but at an upcharge. No other airline has worked to monetise the business-class cabin in this way before, and the fees will vary depending on the length of the flight, demand and elite status – with some of Lufthansa’s top members able to “upgrade” within business class for free.

If a stratified business class feels overwhelming, look out for Lufthansa’s most luxurious First Class Suite Plus seats, which the airline is rolling out as it takes possession of its latest A350s. They’ll have double beds and ceiling-height walls with sliding doors; measuring about 0.9 m, the seats will be some of the widest in the skies, and when they extend to more than 2 m long as a lie-flat bed, they’re fit for even NBA players.

Hawaiian Airlines Leihoku suites

On five-hour flights from Phoenix or Los Angeles to Honolulu, passengers in the front of the plane have typically needed to step over their neighbours to get up for a stretch or a bathroom break. Not anymore. The long-awaited Leihoku suites on Hawaiian Airlines’ new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners are laid out in a 1-2-1 configuration, so each seat has direct aisle access; better yet, each is outfitted with sliding doors for privacy. In the centre are couples’ suites that have a partial divider – just in case you need a break from your travel companion.

The seats are highly adjustable, letting you raise the leg rest without reclining the back, for instance. And winging your way to paradise is more practical now, too: The seats add a small closet with a vanity mirror (in addition to a water bottle cubby), plus a do-not-disturb sign and wireless charging pockets by your shoulder. Also new are Hawaiian design flourishes, such as a starry-night skylight feature that alludes to Polynesian wayfinding traditions. If a merger with Alaska Airlines goes through as expected, the seats could come to even longer-haul routes in the next year.

Air India Business Class

The refreshed carrier’s new Airbus A350s, originally destined for Russia’s Aeroflot before they were diverted by sanctions, are light years ahead of its existing business-class product (which can have middle seats in a 2-3-2 configuration). The planes offer sliding doors for privacy, direct aisle access for all passengers, a mattress pad for the fully flat seat, a personal coat closet, and access to a private bar at the back of the cabin. A US$400 million investment to upgrade business class on the A350s is part of the airline’s larger brand overhaul – expect to see these on routes from Delhi to Dubai and to London Heathrow.

American Airlines Flagship Business

American passengers, too, will benefit from sliding privacy doors if they nab a new Flagship Business seat, which will come to freshly delivered Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR planes in 2025. Because of production delays, the expected routes on the upgraded Dreamliners are still to be determined; the Airbus planes will likely debut first on flights from eastern US hubs to western Europe. By 2026, the new business-class suite should roll out across more of the airline’s long-haul network. These changes will increase the number of premium cabin seats across the fleet by more than 45 per cent.

The features here will be familiar: all-aisle access in either 1-2-1 or 1-1 configurations, ample storage space and large entertainment screens, plus sliding panels in the centre seats that open up so couples can see each other.

 Air New Zealand Business Premier

By next year, Air New Zealand’s ultra-long-haul flights – such as those from New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport to Auckland – will benefit from new suites on retrofitted Boeing 787 Dreamliners. These are a vast improvement over the current flat-bed seats: Instead of facing towards the aisle, they now point towards windows, giving travellers more privacy from people passing in the aisle and an easier view from the window.

Business Premier Luxe seats are also new: Think of them as an even higher-end subset of seats within the business-class cabin. They come with additional legroom, sliding privacy doors and dining seats for companions travelling in the same cabin.

Always innovative in its cabin designs – remember the famous Skycouch, which turns three economy seats into a bed? – Air New Zealand has a fun new feature to look out for in the back of the plane, too, as the airline finally introduces the Skynest concept announced back in 2020. It’s a bunk-bed setup with lie-flat beds that can be booked in four-hour increments – specifically for those who are otherwise cramped in economy.

 Cathay Pacific Aria Suite

One cabin that’s still shrouded in secrecy is Cathay Pacific’s long overdue Aria Suite, a much-buzzed-about rethink of the airline’s first-class cabin that’s expected on the airline’s Boeing 777-300ERs. Anticipated routes and the full slate of amenities have been kept hush-hush, but the expectation from early leaks is that the flat-bed seats will have sliding doors, wireless device chargers and amped-up storage features.

A new partnership means that business class meals are already being designed in partnership with Hong Kong’s Michelin-starred French brasserie Louise and the plant-based Veda by Ovolo. Cathay doesn’t mess around with luxury, and its first-class product already commands plenty of cachet; expect this to be one of the most sought-after ways to fly once the full details are released in the coming months. Red Sox Announce Roster Moves

BOSTON, MA— The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

• Recalled infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook from Triple-A Worcester.
• Selected right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter to the active Major League roster. He will wear number 61.
• Optioned infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez to Worcester.
• Designated right-handed pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa for assignment.

Westbrook , 29, has played in 11 games for the Red Sox this season, his Major League debut. He has made nine starts at second base, also appearing in one game in right field and one at third base. The right-handed hitter has gone 4-for-18 with a double, a home run, four RBI, and two walks. The Holyoke, Massachusetts native has also played in 49 games for Worcester this season, batting .282 (59-for-209) with 32 runs scored and 43 RBI while making 24 starts at third base, 15 in right field, eight at second base, seven as the designated hitter, and four at first base.

Wingenter , 30, was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in a minor league trade. The right-hander owns a 5.28 ERA (51 ER/87.0 IP) with 121 strikeouts in 90 Major League games with the San Diego Padres (2018-19) and Tigers (2023). Originally selected by the Padres in the 17 th round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, the Alabama native has posted a 3.31 ERA (12 ER/32.2 IP) with 48 strikeouts in 26 games this season for Triple-A Toledo.

Valdez , 25, has played in 56 games for Boston this season, making 45 starts at second base and one as the designated hitter while batting .226 (37-for-164) with six home runs and 26 RBI. The left-handed hitter has also played in 20 games for Worcester, batting .230 (17-for-74) with six home runs and 10 RBI. Originally signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent in July 2015, the Dominican Republic native has batted .244 (74-for-303) with a .721 OPS, 12 home runs, and 45 RBI in 105 games with the Red Sox (2023-24).

Uwasawa , 30, allowed one run in 4.0 innings over two games for the Red Sox this season, his Major League debut. The right-hander also posted a 6.54 ERA (31 ER/42.2 IP) with 36 strikeouts in 13 games (six starts) for Worcester. A native of Japan, he was acquired by Boston in a minor league trade on March 27.
