Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Across southeast Texas, residents and officials are assessing the damage and beginning the recovery process.

Millions of Texans are heading into a third summer day without power after Hurricane Beryl wreaked havoc through several counties — including the state’s most populous one — and temperatures rose dangerously into the 90s. The heat index is projected to push past 100 degrees in some areas, compounding the risk for an already battered and worn-out area.

Power companies have deployed thousands of workers to restore power while state and local officials navigate residents’ frustrations at what’s becoming routine in Texas: massive power outages after winter storms, thunderstorms, tornadoes or hurricanes.

As of 6:22 p.m. Tuesday, 1.9 million electricity customers concentrated in the southeastern corner of the state that bore the brunt of Beryl’s fierce winds still didn’t have electricity. Power companies and elected officials said it could be days before everyone has electricity again, meaning people without air conditioning would have to figure out how to cope with the heat.

“The power system is a life saving critical infrastructure — it’s the difference between life and death,” said Costa Samaras, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. “The era of nobody could have foreseen these conditions is over.”

Utility officials and state leaders have said it will likely take days to get everyone’s electricity back on — and temperatures are projected to rise steadily over the next week, National Weather Service Meteorologist Ryan Knapp said.

Temperatures in the 80s and 90s can create unsafe conditions for high-risk individuals, especially in a home with no power, and finding ways to keep cool will be paramount, he said.

“The upper 80s can obviously heat the inside of the home pretty quickly,” Knapp said.

At least nine people died as Beryl tore through Texas

Hurricane Beryl, which brought fierce winds and heavy rains to a large portion of southeastern Texas, has killed at least nine people, according to state and local authorities.

In Harris County, two people waiting out the storm in their homes were killed in separate instances when trees fell on their residences. An Atascocita Fire Department spokesperson said that in the first instance, two people were in a residence when a tree fell, killing one and injuring the other. The second instance saw a 74-year-old grandmother die after a tree fell on her bedroom, according to Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced another person, a city of Houston employee, died from drowning in a flooded underpass on July 8. Acting Houston Police Department Chief Larry Satterwhite identified the man in a social media post as 54-year-old HPD information security officer Russell Richardson.

Tropical Storm Beryl: How to get help and help Texans

Harris County also reported two deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning during Beryl, Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd said in a July 9 news conference. Kidd said that during the power outages, people run generators in unsafe places — like in a garage or near windows — allowing carbon monoxide to pool indoors. This can lead to asphyxiation.

In Montgomery County, two died inside a tent in a wooded area, according to a news release from the county’s emergency management office. No additional details surrounding their death were available. A third person, a man in his 40s, died in Montgomery County after a tree fell on him while he was on his tractor, the news release said.

In Galveston County, John Florence, an investigator with the county's Medical Examiner confirmed that 71 year-old Judith Greet died at Crystal Beach, a community in the Bolivar Peninsula. Greet was on oxygen for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a lung disease that blocks airflow and makes it difficult to breathe. When the hurricane knocked out power in her RV home, Greet’s oxygen machine ran out of battery and she died.

The Houston Chronicle reported that a tenth person died in a house fire caused by lightning. Houston fire officials told The Texas Tribune that the cause is under investigation.

Federal disaster declaration approved, Patrick says

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said President Joe Biden approved a Federal Emergency Disaster Declaration to aid Texans in the recovery from Hurricane Beryl. Following a phone call with Biden Tuesday, Patrick stated that he requested FEMA assistance to cover costs for debris removal and emergency protective measures.

“We are appreciative that the federal government will step in and they will pick up most of the cost as we go through recovery of the storm,” Patrick said at a Tuesday press briefing.

Once the declaration is finalized and issued, the state’s homeowners and business will be able to access loans and grants to help with Beryl-related recovery costs. FEMA’s public assistance program is divided into categories. Part A covers the costs of debris removal, while part B covers emergency protective measures like medical care, transportation and evacuation. Patrick said the federal government would be covering “most of the cost” associated with storm recovery.

The declaration includes 121 impacted counties, Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd said. Those counties include Brazoria, Galveston and Harris.

Kidd urged residents to adhere to local government regulations if they start doing their own debris cleanup.

Debris will need to be separated into three categories. Vegetative debris includes leaves and plants; construction and demolition debris includes building materials; appliances and white goods are another category.

“Please don’t put it all into one pile,” Kidd said. “It only slows the recovery process.”

On Monday, Biden spoke with Houston Mayor John Whitmire and said his administration is committed to supporting Texas, a White House spokesperson said.

“The U.S. Coast Guard and FEMA are on the ground and stand ready to support local response efforts,” the spokesperson said. “They will remain with the people of Texas every step of the way.”

Texans begin to assess damage and plan clean-up efforts after bruising storm

Hurricane Beryl plowed through the Houston region Monday and, according to local meteorologist Matt Lanza, keeping up hurricane strength until it got halfway across town. Only in the afternoon would the winds die down completely, allowing people to emerge to follow a routine many know well: assess the damage, check on others, clean up and wait for the power to return.

The storm jolted people awake as its winds roared, blowing at 90 miles per hour, pushing tree branches at windows and ripping shingles from rooftops. Ten to 15 inches of rain pounded homes, according to Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

“Just my luck”: Houston begins clean up after Beryl rips through Gulf Coast

The wind sounded to 31-year-old Elizabeth Alvarez in Houston like someone screaming. The mother of six woke up at 4 a.m., scared, and didn’t go back to sleep. She thought her window might break. She lost power and — hour by hour — more Houstonians did too, their air conditioning and refrigerated food going along with it.

Later, Alvarez would drag her pet birds in their cages onto her porch to feel the cooler air, while neighbors grilled corn and pork and others kicked a soccer ball. She would clutch a handheld, battery-powered fan, that was turned off to save for when she needed it.

Across the region, fences toppled. Awnings ripped from restaurants. Signs soared away from businesses. Traffic lights twisted askew. A local television station lost power and went off the air. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said on The Weather Channel, “Really, Houston is getting the brunt of the wind and the rain.”

The pops of transformers echoed. Entire trees crashed down.

And the damage pushed on from there, as Beryl uprooted trees and downed power lines into southeast Texas. In Liberty, a beloved pecan tree outside the historic courthouse was uprooted early on Monday, according to Bluebonnet News . The tree served as a meeting place for generations of residents.

“The rebuild is going to be significant. There was real damage. But the good news is for Houston, this ain’t our first rodeo,” U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz said at a Monday evening press conference.

How to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from generators during power outages

When electrical power is knocked out after a hurricane, carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly used gas-powered generators is especially dangerous. The odorless, colorless gas is called an “invisible killer.” Early symptoms can include headache, dizziness, weakness and nausea, similar to the flu. To stay safe, experts recommend never connecting a generator directly to your home’s wiring, ensuring it's properly grounded, and always operate it outdoors away from windows and vents.

What should I do after a hurricane hits?

Stay away from flood waters and damaged power lines. Don’t enter damaged buildings. Take photos and document damages to your home or property. Residents are also encouraged to document their storm damages and losses through a state-run online survey to help state officials understand the extent of the damages.

How to navigate FEMA during this year’s hurricane season

Tornadoes pop up in East Texas after Beryl downgraded to a Tropical Storm

After downing trees and power lines across the Greater Houston area, Hurricane Beryl has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm, meaning wind speeds have lowered below 75 miles per hour.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to about 60 miles per hour, a 1 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Beryl is headed northeastward at about 14 miles per hour and is expected to increase in speed as it continues to move through East Texas, where some local officials asked residents to shelter in place.

The National Weather Service out of Shreveport is tracking three confirmed tornadoes on radar, two in Texas and the third in Louisiana. The first is south of Joaquin, which is north of Lufkin and near the Louisiana border, the second is north of Timpson, which is also near the border.

Forecasters urged Texans to use caution amid downed power lines and warned that improper generator use can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

On the Texas coastline, a storm surge warning is still in effect north of San Luis Pass to Sabine Pass, an area that includes Galveston Bay. The tropical storm warning was discontinued from Port O’Conner to San Luis Pass.

The Coastal Bend, including areas like Corpus Christi, was spared from the brunt of the storm.

High winds persist into East Texas, prompting requests for residents to shelter in place

High winds have made their way north from the Texas coast into East Texas and counties have begun to ask residents to shelter in place as a way to keep emergency vehicles off the roads as well.

The storm kept up its momentum as a Category 1 hurricane all the way to Interstate 10, surprising meteorologist Matt Lanza at Space City Weather.

“The widespread wind gusts of 75 to 85 mph so far inland was really unnerving,” he wrote in an updated blog post.

Residents of San Jacinto, Liberty, Hardin and Tyler counties have been encouraged to shelter in place, especially to stay off the roads in an effort to also keep emergency vehicles off the road.

News outlets and emergency management teams throughout the region have reported downed power lines and trees throughout the region.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch until 10 p.m. Monday for counties between Montgomery and Texarkana counties, as well as Northwest and North Central Louisiana and Southern Arkansas. A wind advisory is in effect until Tuesday morning.

Storm passes over Lake Livingston Dam, which was inundated with rain in April

In Polk County, which is home to the Lake Livingston Dam, the storm began to peak around 11 a.m. with the worst of it located over the dam, according to Polk County Emergency Management. High winds are still top of mind, even as Beryl has been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The dam, which recently reported potential failures, was releasing 21,175 cubic feet of water per second as of 11 a.m. and the lake level is at 130.93 feet above sea level.

This is significantly less than the several hundred thousand cubic feet of water released in April, when storms required several hundred thousand cubic feet of water per second to be released for multiple days in a row.

The Trinity River Authority, in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Authority, initiated a temporary flight restriction over the dam as the authority also began construction to mitigate potential failures early Monday.

Houston officials ask residents to remain off roads as damage assessment begins

Downed tree limbs and power lines, flooded streets, and power outages have Houston officials pleading with residents to stay home.

Houston mayor John Whitmire held a news conference Monday detailing the dire situation the city finds itself in as it took the brunt of Hurricane Beryl.

“We are dealing with a very serious amount of water. Around 10 inches of rain across the city and 90-mile-per-hour winds and hurricane conditions,” Whitmire said. “Please, Houstonians, shelter in place. We are in emergency and rescue mode.”

Whitmire said over 700,000 Houston electricity customers are currently without power, and the region’s two major airports are not open. However, city officials should better understand the situation now that the storm is moving away.

“We are experiencing the dirty side of a dirty storm,” Whitmire said.

The storm's sustained winds were still at 70 miles per hour as it moved from the Gulf Coast into the Houston area. The National Hurricane Center said that up to 10 inches of rain could fall in some places — and some isolated areas of the state may receive 15 inches. Some areas of Houston have already received nearly 10 inches of rainfall, according to data from the Harris County Flood Control District. On Monday morning, local officials in the Houston area said the storm had downed trees and caused street flooding. At least two people died when trees fell onto their residences.

In Rosenberg, a city 35 miles southwest of Houston, a downed tree hit a high water rescue vehicle returning from a rescue, police said on X . Officials there also urged residents to stay off roadways.

Houston Fire Department Chief Samuel Pena underscored the strain on resources due to the high demand for high-water rescues and live wire calls. These are currently the primary service requests, consuming a significant portion of their resources, and they have already helped eight people in high-water rescues.

“Earlier today, we saw a video of a high-water rescue , and you can see how resource-intensive those call types are. We can’t keep using those resources. Please be cautious and heed the warnings,” Pena said.

Refineries begin reporting storm-related air pollution

Some refineries along the Texas coast have shut down due to Hurricane Beryl and are self-reporting instances of “unintentional” emissions.

In one instance, Freeport LNG, a large natural gas terminal on the coast of Brazoria County, reported releases of over 8,000 pounds of unplanned air pollution on Sunday. Pollutants included ethylene , a chemical with a faint sweet and musky odor, that can cause headache, dizziness, fatigue, and lightheadedness if people are exposed to it in large amounts overtime.

In their report to the state, the company wrote the facility was proactively shutting down before the hurricane winds caused power outages.

“[The shutdown] resulted in a subsequent unavoidable venting,” the report said.

Flaring, a process for burning unwanted gas to relieve pressure or clear pipes, usually happens before or during extreme weather events, said Luke Metzger, executive director of the nonprofit Environment Texas.

The Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, along the Houston Ship Channel, tweeted the facility was flaring Monday morning due to a brief power disruption during the storm. No report has been submitted to the state yet.

Metzger said Beryl’s pollution events are low compared to Hurricane Harvey’s 8.3 million pounds of air pollution reported to the state, but suspects more facilities will submit reports after the storm’s passing.

“I was surprised looking at the pollution reports that there has been relatively little pollution reported,” Metzger said. “That’s either good news because the storm had less of an impact [on refineries] or facilities [operators] have learned their lesson.”

Beryl makes landfall in Texas as Category 1 hurricane

Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda around 4 a.m. Monday as a Category 1 Hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm strengthened through Sunday evening and had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour when it came ashore. A 5 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center warned about life-threatening storm surge and inland flooding Monday.

Hundreds of thousands of Texans are without power , including many in coastline counties such as Brazoria and Matagorda, according to PowerOutage.us. The full scope of the storm's damage is not yet clear — and it could cause more Monday as it moves northeast through the state.

The hurricane center said the coast was experiencing life-threatening storm surge. It also warned of flash floods throughout the southeastern portion of the state as the storm continues moving inland, bringing five to 10 inches of rain to some areas — or up to 15 inches in some isolated places.

Category 1 storms primarily damage unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery and trees. They can also do extensive damage to electricity lines and cause power outages that last several days.

The sunday essay: lush and lost on ponsonby road.

Drinking wasn’t just a pastime, it was my profession – and it got way out of control.

W hen I talk about my former life in Auckland, it’s hard not to talk about booze. Every neighbourhood had its own series of stories, from Kings Road bar hopping to Kumeu long lunches. But it was the 1.7-kilometre stretch of establishments in Ponsonby, from Three Lamps to K Road, that made up the blurry patchwork of tales I collected in my seven years living in the city.

Each drink and bar suited a particular mood, and on Ponsonby Road I indulged them all: espresso martinis at Mea Culpa to send me sparking into the night; Sunday bubbles at Chapel gearing up for another work week; chardonnay at Ponsonby Social Club as banter ricocheted off brick walls; Jack Daniels and coke at The Whiskey, kissing strangers in curtained corners.

Drinking was not only a pastime but also my profession as a brand manager for a portfolio of New Zealand wineries. It was my job to ensure our wines got into all the right places, which mostly meant sitting at a desk crunching numbers and doing deals, but also involved going out and being seen with a bottle on the table. There was always an occasion to drink. The release of a new vintage. A VIP winemaker in town. Tuesday.

Strangers were new friends, bartenders were old mates, but colleagues were family. We clinked glasses when we smashed the month’s sales numbers and commiserated when the targets were beyond reach. We hopscotched from afternoon sessions and happy hours to degustation dinners and cocktail nights. We drank rounds by the bottle and waded into pools of laughter, double vision, and messy smiles.

I remember dancing into the small hours of the morning at Longroom because my colleague Tom wanted to dance, and even though I didn’t care for clubs, I wanted Tom. Thick beats pumped through the crowd as the floor heaved with aftershave, sweat, and spiced rum. Tom went home with me that night, and many nights thereafter. He was worth dancing for.

On another occasion, one of my wine brands sponsored an evening with a famous poet. He showed up as the sun was setting, and from behind dark glasses asked if the wine was red.

“It sure is,” I said.

“Terrific. Pour me a glass and leave a couple of bottles nearby.”

I was surprised he could even stand when it came time to recite his work to an eager audience. I tugged on the sapphire pendant around my neck as I worked out how we’d refund tickets if he didn’t make it through the night. But then he sat on a stool in the corner of the room, and for the next 45 minutes there was nothing else in the world except the cool words coming from his mouth: sexy sonnets about skin on skin and heartbreaking lines about loss of life. The man was a pro.

A t some point over the course of every drinking session, a responsible voice inside my hazy brain would cut me off from further drinks. I’d switch from alcohol to water and ride the wave of elated drunkenness as sobriety kicked in.

But during the last two years of my life in Auckland, things began to darken, and it seemed the voice had abandoned me. My workplace had grown volatile amidst rolling redundancies. Close friends had moved away, giving up 3am last calls for nappy changes. I left a boyfriend I loved because his drinking was out of control, but when I turned to alcohol to ease the heartache I ended up unravelling myself.

My workdays smudged into a new normal. I’d spend the morning hours hungover at my desk, pounding coffee and painkillers as I scanned sales numbers and warehouse stock levels. By lunch I was coming right, chatting to sales reps over the phone and finalising marketing collateral with the design team.

Then, around 3.30ish, the rising terror of an evening spent sober would jolt me into action. I’d get up and stalk the desks, seeking a lifeline, until I caught the eye of a colleague and smiled. They’d smile too, but hesitantly. I’d approach and ask how their day was going, they’d let a complaint slip, and I’d solve their problem with the suggestion of an after-work drink. No, I can’t , they’d reply. I really shouldn’t . I’d brush it off and say, All good , and return to my desk. Thirty minutes later they’d appear beside me. OK, just one , they’d say, as deep relief washed through me.

We’d taxi to Ponsonby Road and stumble from bar to bar, pretending it wasn’t a school night, hoping we wouldn’t reek of alcohol at work the next day. At some point my colleague would call it a night, but I’d keep drinking until no one was left but the bartender closing up, and then I’d have a drink with them.

Somehow I’d make it home for two blinks of sleep until my alarm would blast through my bedroom. Slumped over in the shower, I’d swear to stop doing this to myself, but then I’d arrive at work and it would start again.

O ne day I woke up in a strange, bright apartment. I squinted into the morning sun. There were bed sheets twisted around my body and my phone was on a side table. I was hot, sweaty, and desperate for water. Then I heard a rustling beside me.

“You have to leave,” a man shouted. “Get dressed.”

My mind churned slow and heavy.

“Seriously, get up!”

I felt something land on my leg. I turned over as my eyes adjusted and found a man darting through the room, picking up clothes and tossing them at me. I watched my boot sail over the bed and land hard on the floor.

“ OK ,” I snapped.

The questions hammered in my head: did we sleep together? No. What’s his name? It starts with an H. Where am I? I think his place is near the waterfront.

“My wife is on her way. She can’t know you were here.”

When I was dressed and heading out the door something flickered in him, and he shifted from anger to remorse. He offered to drive me home, and even though I was wary of him, I was disorientated enough to agree. His car’s passenger seat was piled high with cleaning supplies and empty boxes. He shifted them to the boot as he admitted, “I’m in the process of getting divorced.”

Silence settled thick between us as he drove across the city, while flashes of the night before clapped like thunder in my mind. Shots. Laughter. Another bar. More shots. A taxi ride to his place. His angry words in bed when I was passing out and he wanted to have sex. In the morning , I remember slurring.

It had been risky. Going home with random men wasn’t something I’d done a lot in my lifetime. But it had become a way of forgetting the lonely chasm of aimlessness I couldn’t see my way out of.

I asked him to drop me two blocks from my flat because I didn’t want him to know where I lived. At home I stumbled into the bathroom and finally saw what he’d woken up next to: sunken eyes, pale face, matted hair, dry lips. The room was spinning and I felt sick. I went to rub my sapphire necklace – I’d worn it every day since Mum had given it to me 10 years prior – but the necklace wasn’t there.

I tore into my bedroom and dug through my bag, but couldn’t find it. I went back into the bathroom, scanned the basin, medicine cabinet, the ledge by the window – nothing. That’s when my brain began drip-feeding me fragments from the night before. We were making out. I was hovering over him. The necklace kept catching on my chin. I took it off and slapped it onto his bedside table. It was still there.

I imagined his wife finding my necklace and the fight that might ensue. Would she yell? What would he say? Then I teased out a tiny thread of hope that maybe he’d turn out to be a good guy; that he’d see the necklace, slip it into his pocket, and return it to me. But that couldn’t happen, because he didn’t have my number and I’d made sure he didn’t know where I lived. I knew one of them would most likely drop the necklace into the rubbish bin, that it would be taken to a landfill, and for the rest of my life it would lie somewhere on this earth without me.

M onday morning I handed in my resignation. I didn’t have a job lined up and my savings account was an embarrassment. I sold all my stuff and had a farewell party, then spent eight months drying out in the spare bedroom of Mum’s place in Arizona. When I was ready to return to New Zealand, I knew I couldn’t go back to Auckland. It was too risky.

So instead, I moved to Wellington. I got a serious job in government where I met Patrick, a colleague who became a friend and then my flatmate. Hanging out with Patrick was easy for two reasons: one, he didn’t care about the peppery notes or lingering tannins in his glass of shiraz. Two, when he asked about my past ( What was Auckland like? ), he didn’t push when I gave vague answers ( Oh you know, just different .)

As I walked the city, hair blown across my face and the scent of coffee roasting in the air, I began unpacking the looping picture-show of shame that had followed me across the North Island. It would take me years, but I rebuilt my life into something new: I woke at 5am, did morning routines and yoga, attended university lectures, and spent my nights dreaming rather than knocking back Jager shots. I started seeing a man who’d set a personal goal not to drink for a year, and we agreed to have a sober relationship. For the first time, I’d found a way to stand on my own two feet without a glass of wine in each hand.

It took four years and three attempts to return to Ponsonby. The first time back in Auckland, I didn’t even make it into the city – I landed at the airport, did a work presentation 10 minutes down the road, then flew straight back to Wellington. The second time I stayed on the east side of the city centre, restricting myself to Parnell and Newmarket, the calmer parts of town where I could do some shopping.

But the third time, I stayed a block from Ponsonby Road, where all my demons had been lying in wait for my return.

Within hours of arriving, I spotted old colleagues drinking beers in the sun at Chapel. At dinner, I was seated next to an industry somebody who was rumoured to have had an affair with a sales rep. I even ran into a winemaker friend who was doing a tasting that afternoon at Ponsonby Social Club.

“You should stop by,” she said. “We’ll be serving samples from the new vintage.”

I smiled and nodded, happy to see her, but knew I couldn’t go. I’d later flick through online photos of friends who had shown up, catching glimpses of my former boozy life that had charged on without me.

I had to admit I missed it: the shyness that faded with each sip, the hiccup of time between drinks one and two when I was still lucid but starting to loosen up. I imagined returning to my previous employer, begging for my job back, and cannonballing into the industry again, because it had felt good to be great at something: to nail my sales goals, to represent wineries I believed in, and to feel like I’d earned a big night at the end of the day.

But the larger part of me, the one that had sobered up, knew that was an awful idea. Because in the absence of alcohol dulling my senses, I’d found new ways of living my life. I had learnt to work through problems with words instead of wine. I had friends who understood that I preferred coffee catch-ups to after-work drinks. I had made memories in Wellington that were clear and easy to recall – not foggy fragments and blackout nights I couldn’t piece together.

O n that third trip to Auckland, Patrick came along as well. Even after four years living and working together in Wellington, I hadn’t shared much about my time in the wine industry. He was also unfamiliar with Ponsonby, so when I gave him a walking tour of the neighbourhood I let slip a few details about my past life.

I pointed out a bar where I could never remember to close my tab at the end of the night, prompting the 5pm walk of shame the next day to retrieve my credit card. We crossed an intersection where the night of my 29th birthday the heel of my stiletto snapped off mid-stride. And I hurried us past a corner bar where my hair once flickered over a candle and caught fire.

Patrick grabbed my arm, stopping us in the middle of the footpath.

“Who were you?” he asked, squinting at me as if I was no longer recognisable.

I held my breath, searching his face. Had I revealed too much? Had I just erased all the progress I’d made in Wellington by coming back to the place I’d worked so hard to leave behind?

Patrick broke into a smile, shaking his head and chuckling.

“I’m messing with you. I like learning about who you were,” he said, linking his arm in mine as we resumed walking. “Keep going.”

Joe Biden Is a Good Man and a Good President. He Must Bow Out of the Race.

I watched the Biden-Trump debate alone in a Lisbon hotel room, and it made me weep. I cannot remember a more heartbreaking moment in American presidential campaign politics in my lifetime, precisely because of what it revealed: Joe Biden, a good man and a good president, has no business running for re-election. And Donald Trump, a malicious man and a petty president, has learned nothing and forgotten nothing. He is the same fire hose of lies he always was, obsessed with his grievances — nowhere close to what it will take for America to lead in the 21st century.

The Biden family and political team must gather quickly and have the hardest of conversations with the president, a conversation of love and clarity and resolve. To give America the greatest shot possible of deterring the Trump threat in November, the president has to come forward and declare that he will not be running for re-election and is releasing all of his delegates for the Democratic National Convention.

The Republican Party, if its leaders had an ounce of integrity, would demand the same, but it won’t, because they don’t. That makes it all the more important that Democrats put the country’s interests first and announce that a public process will begin for different Democratic candidates to compete for the nomination — town halls, debates, meetings with donors, you name it. Yes, it could be chaotic and messy when the Democratic convention starts on Aug. 19 in Chicago, but I think the Trump threat is sufficiently grave that delegates could quickly rally around a consensus nominee.

If Vice President Kamala Harris wants to compete, she should. But voters deserve an open process in search of a Democratic presidential nominee who can unite not only the party but also the country, by offering something neither man on that Atlanta stage did on Thursday night: a compelling description of where the world is right now and a compelling vision for what America can and must do to keep leading it — morally, economically and diplomatically.

Because this is no ordinary hinge of history we are at. We are at the start of the biggest technological disruptions and the biggest climate disruption in human history. We are at the dawn of an artificial intelligence revolution that is going to change EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE — how we work, how we learn, how we teach, how we trade, how we invent, how we collaborate, how we fight wars, how we commit crimes and how we fight crimes. Maybe I missed it, but I did not hear the phrase “artificial intelligence” mentioned by either man at the debate.

If there was ever a time that the world needed an America at its best, led by its best, it is now — for great dangers and opportunities are now upon us. A younger Biden could have been that leader, but time has finally caught up with him. And that was painfully and inescapably obvious on Thursday.

Who am I? Describing oneself is one of the most complicated tasks. In most cases, we always define ourselves using institutions, other people, or activities. Well, I know quite much about myself: I am a kind, friendly, respectful, and principled young person.

COMMENTARY: Are You Wiser Today Than Yesterday? Things I’ve Learned

Do you think you’re any wiser today than you were five years ago? Do you think you’ll be wiser still in another five years? I hope the answer to both

questions is an emphatic “yes.”

One of the benefits of growing older is getting better. And we get better by learning.

I’m not just talking about increasing our knowledge of new facts like how a volcanic eruption in Iceland can prevent airline traffic in most of Europe.

I’m talking about acquiring usable nuggets of wisdom that can change our lives.

I’ve talked about my own life insights and re-packaged them in lots of ways but here’s another attempt tocondense some of the things that make me wiser than I was.

For starters, I’ve learned that as long as I’m willing to learn, I  can  learn. Just as important, I’ve become more open to learning by realizing that the fact that I’m wiser today doesn’t mean I was foolish or incompetent before. This is what I mean when I say, “you don’t have to be sick to get better.”

I’ve also come to accept that that no matter how old I am, my life and character are works in process and that there will always be a gap between who I am and who I want to be.

I’ve learned that it’s easy to mask moral compromises with rationalizations and that my character is revealed not by my words or intentions but by my willingness to do the right thing even when it costs more than I want to pay.

I’ve learned that my character is more important than my competence and that being significant is more important than being successful.

I’ve learned that I often judge myself by my good intentions but that I’ll be judged by my last worst act.

I’ve learned that the surest road to happiness is good relationships and that striving to be a good person is the surest road to good relationships.

Finally, I’ve learned that pain is inevitable but suffering is optional and that it’s not what happens to me that matters most but what happens in me.

Reflect on Yesterday for a Better Tomorrow The desire to be a better person today more so than yesterday should intensify throughout life. It should be instinctual to improve, for most of us, at least. That urge we get to do better each day propels us and keeps moving us forward. It makes us want to get up the next day and take steps toward each goal, so that we can prove to ourselves that it is possible to do bigger and better. We all have specific dreams, hopes and desires. Working to achieve these helps us exercise our muscles and get stronger. Even if we are just showing ourselves how much better we can do, reflecting on the mistakes from yesterday helps us to put a plan of action in place to help us focus and reach our goals along this journey. Reaching our goals equates to a better tomorrow. When we do not reach our expectations on day one, it does not mean that we have permanently failed. We must learn to “reset” our yesterdays and improve our lives for tomorrow. We should not let small “slip-ups” make us give up on the promise of having a great future. Life is just like a game of cards – when you make a mistake in one game, you shuffle the deck again and start all over. It is important to not let a temporary defeat affect you permanently. If we never make mistakes, then how will we learn? Learning from the small errors we made yesterday is a necessity in order to be better tomorrow. I recall a mistake I made at age 14 while in my freshman year at Skyline. Since it was my first year in high school , everything was new to me. That year was not a very good one for me because I was having a hard time adjusting to classes, coupled with some personal situations with my friends. At that time, I was not accustomed to the daily grind of high school, since I was new to it. In fact, I didn't really care about my classes and grades. In the middle of the first semester, one of my friends decided to ditch class. She asked me if I wanted to join her. Not understanding what I was getting myself into, I said, “Yes,” and we left. This friend’s sister had a car, and she would also skip with us. We kept skipping for weeks, going out to eat, and doing anything else but attending classes. After a month and a

I was more concerned about going against what my parents were telling me just to make them furious. I always saw myself as an average student so I really did not mind missing school and paying much attention to it. What do you think? Read Benjamin Percy's " Don't Look Back: The Problem With Backstory " then weigh in with a comment of your own. Does the impulse to explain a character's history "insult your audience," as Percy writes, or do you, like Henderson, crave "the weight of history, the magic of motivation" that backstory provides?

¶Human enlightenment and much human pleasure would be erased or evaporated.  Life is too short to have to learn every step of (what would have been) the gurus secrets of life dangers and successes for oneself.  Hemight as well have said "Goodbye to fiction!"  Andthere is more: we were each told that every scientific invention is built and the inventors stand on the shoulders of giants.  Does he mean, "Goodbye to giants!"

¶It is a mere notion, a fantasy.  I like fantasy, too: it is written in obeisance to what is imagined, to what is past.

I subscribe to the late Elmore Leonard's rule #10: "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip." Yes, we need to know how Ramona learned to make the untraceable poison that killed Fidel. No, we don't need the 5,00 year old history of that poisonous berry.If Ramona's great great-grandmother was hanged as a witch, and both women have one green eye and one blue eye--keep that detail.

In praise of multiple time frames

In her unforgettable and gorgeous first novel, The God of Small Things , Arundhati Roy takes us into three time frames in the first four pages, and continues to move among front-, back-, and middle-stories throughout the book. Stripped of this technique, the novel would lose a great deal of its richness - and the reader much of its pleasure. This is only one among countless examples.

As Henderson points out, any technique can be well- or ill-used. A thriller may need no backstory to be excellent. Many stories, however, certainly need it to be at all effective.

I'm so grateful that Eleanor Henderson has taken on this topic. Anytime we limit ourselves in any aspect of our lives, not just as writers, we put unnessary restrictions on our movements. I want many options, many tools to work with, and backstory is one such tool. Hourra pour l'histoire arrière!

I read a lot of "do's and

I read a lot of "do's and dont's" about writing, but the bottom line is what works for that writer. The best advice I ever heard was an analogy to finances: Don't squander it all up front. Use your capital (action and character) to build up interest. Only when you have adequate reserves can you tap into those for a little backstory; then build up more interest. Try to incorporate the backstory as much as possible into dialogue, internal reflection, or something that shows character as well as motivation. For example: "Remember Prague?" Joe asked. Jim grimaced. "How could I forget? I almost bought it there. I'm just lucky, I guess." Unless someone from Prague is after Jim, we don't need any more detail. We know he's a spy or a criminal, and he has become somewhat desensitized to danger. I've read a number of novels (not just classics) where virtually the entire background is given in narration up front; they lost me. On the other hand, I totally agree with Eleanor. Once you have hooked me into your story, give me a little of the past as needed, or somehow explain motivation, or I will again lose interest in that character.

Flashing Back

Last summer at a workshop led by a well known author, I submitted one lesson using flashbacks. She buried me before the class. She categorically denounced flashbacks en toto. In my fight or flight mode, I retaliated with far too much vigor, I regret. After a restless night's sleep, I realized that unfortunately, the workshop, for me, had become a waste.  If she had approached the subject with views of each side it would have been OK. We both could have marched on with undamaged swords. 

Incidentally, at age 81, I am mentally and emotionally immersed each day with the backstory of my life. It balances me. It provides me perspective -- as a person and as a writer.

Reading the original article, It sounds like its the explaining in the text he is against, not the existence of a backstory itself. A character is not so compelling without a backstory, however it is not necessary to explicitly tell the reader the past. I think this is what Percy is saying. Now "not necessary" does not mean "not allowed" so of course writers can explain the past if they do do artfully and without losing the reader's interest.

"No backstory?" I say with the same incredulity that the editor used in response to little Virginia's letter asking if there was a Santa Claus. Why not do away with all parts of speech except present tense active verbs? I'm a Southern writer (living in New England), and our way of storytelling is hardly ever direct from point A to point B. Within each story are other stories, like Russian nesting dolls, and all hold meaning that enriches the entire set. I love the structure of flashback and bookending, so, you'll get no agreement from me to eliminate backstory. Nosiree bob.

Percy uses the restriction as a pedagogical device.

Restricting beginners from doing things they normally do badly forces them to be more creative in solving the problems restriction creates, and improves the final product. I see nothing wrong with that.

Giving students a free hand to express themselves leads them down the watercourse of predictability and cliche.

The more restrictions the writer sets for himself the better the resulting product. That is what the rules are for. So that we learn how to break them better.

I once heard William Matthews tell his workshop students they must become so familiar with the rules that they will be able to successfully break them all, including the "show, don't tell" rule.  That was so many years ago, he may not have known (or didn't care because he was a poet), about the contemporary prejudice to avoid backstory.   Another time, I heard Grace Paley talk about how rules come in and go out of fashion.  Sometimes, she said, you just have to wait for the fashion wave to catch up with you.

I enjoyed both Percy and Hendersons’ perspectives and believe a crux to the question is:  The reader or the writer?  In most works, the reader knowingly or unknowingly meets the characters immediately, whether through their current actions, dialogue and those of others, and/or through the narrative that depicts their speech, behavior-  past or present.  Both are affective in the hands of a good writer.  Both have an immediacy to continue the plot curve.  I do appreciate Margaret Atwood’s take on the role of memory and nostalgia, telling stories of ourselves in her interview with Razia Iqbal, while exploring a contemplative future.  The setting initially, followed by the conflicts of the characters lead to the climax and following resolution, either positive or negative, and presents to the reader, the theme.  The human condition IS conflict, so who cares if it comes from the past, present or future?  Think and enjoy . . . and write.

Thanks for continuing the conversation!  I love these comments, especially the ones from an 81-year-old writer and a Southern writer, both of whom value backstory for their own reasons. Since I'm now writing a novel set in the South, largely based on the setting my 81-year-old father grew up in, I'm suddenly interested in the way backstory might have a special place in this book.  So thanks for making that connection for me.

Stop comparing yourself to others.

There will always be somebody out there who is wealthier than you.

There will always be somebody out there who is better looking than you.

There will always be somebody out there who is smarter than you.

This is an ugly truth that many people fail to grasp. There is no doubt that social media is a great platform for staying connected with loved ones and friends. It is also beneficial in terms of being informed of local events, finding short-term accommodation and for a variety of business opportunities. The ugly side of Social Media rears its head in when feelings of competition, envy, boasting, and hatred come into play.

If you continually compare yourself with others, you will never be satisfied. Stop searching for external validation. It is a bottomless pit that cannot be filled. If you wish to compare yourself, then do so with the person who you were yesterday. You should always be striving to improve some area of your life, whether that be your finances, relationships, wealth, health or spirituality.

For the present we might not think, but later when we think of the past, we think, we could have done it in a better way. Infact, yesterdays are guidelines for our tomorrows.

To make this clearer, I could explain how I spent my yesterday, the whole day. Morning I woke up, brushed my teeth, took a shower, got myself fresh and came to the breakfast table along with my parents.

Mom had made a lovely breakfast and we all enjoyed the hot toasts she made. Since yesterday was a holiday, I thought I would spent time with my friends and I went over to my friends place after breakfast. There we played a lot and enjoyed and some of his other friends also joined us later for playing. We played for quite some time until we were all tired and exhausted. We then took a break had some cold drinks that his Mom gave us and we went our ways back home.

Back at home, Mom had prepared yummy lunch for me and after taking a shower, I had my lunch. Since I was too tired I slept off. When I woke up, it was almost tea time. Mom had made hot crunchy snacks and I enjoyed them, with a cup of hot milk and we sat and talked for some time.

Later, I sat to do my homework and did some studies that I had to complete. When I was done with my work, Dad came home from work. After he got fresh, we sat together and played some indoor games and talked about the day events for all of us. By then it was dinner time and Mom served dinner for us.

We had, talked and laughed about general talks, and spent some time. Later we cleaned the dishes, said a family prayer and it was time for me to go to bed. I wished my parents Goodnight and had a wonderful sleep. When the day is good, it feels like being blessed and great.

Bringing forward one of my favorites as well as one of the most practical essay topics one would witness in life. This topic is such a one which has a great influence on children as well as working professionals. Sometime or the other each and every individual has to face this topic in one form or the other.

One usually faces a few common types of essays generally based on the type of work space he or she belongs to or else in school life one faces a set of common essays ranging from technology to festivities. Once in a while one has to come across such topics which actually have an implication in real life and don't simply follow a similar essay format for all individuals. These essays are impacted by what one feels in life and moreover whats there own view towards it. Exploring the Topic As this topic does not follow the typical essay writing format, its a good practice to try to relate the topic to ones own life and how they feel about it. It would be a significant point to identify that its the present moment which has the greatest importance in the life of the individual since neither past nor the future can improve anything but the present can. Furthermore it would also be noticed that except future, the other two do nothing more than adding tension or depression hence the best option is to focus on the present. Practically this is what the entire essay would be based on. Its always a good practice to add an example, so if the writer feels that they can relate the topic to some incident which they have witnessed in their life or maybe heard of, it can be happily added as this would definitely add some brownie points. Another thing that many people do is adding one quote either at the beginning or as a concluding point, either way its a good thing to do and hence its encouraged for this essay as well. The benefit here is that quotes related to this topic are very common, therefore having one handy won't be a tough thing to do. Time is such a factor which once gone is gone forever thus the more time spent thinking about anything other than the present is nothing other than the wastage of valuable time which otherwise can be used to strengthen the future by focusing on the present. Today is actually that tomorrow, regarding which one worried yesterday. This is what is the usual scenario, the present is wasted worrying about future regarding which one has no clue that what is about to come. The earlier one gets to implement this reality in his or her life the better it is since then they are actually walking on the path of betterment and the truth is that a better individual is the key to a better society. Further Scope This is only a brief idea based on which one can write their essay. One could elaborate eon the above mentioned points or they could frame their own points as per choice. Adding a word of caution, its nice to have a long essay but the points should differ from each other else it might look like an endless loop repeating the same sentences over and over again with a mild change in the sentence formation.

Now and then, if we pause for a second and dwell inside we will realize that most of the time either we are thinking about something that happened in the past or else creating thoughts related to the future. We are not 100% in the present. This way, we are living halfheartedly. We are missing out on our present. Every moment brings so much for us. If we learn to live in the moment, we will extract everything from that moment. If we are elsewhere, we are not enjoying our lives to the fullest. Creating thoughts about the past or future is considered to be a waste of time. It is because we cannot repair our past. Something that is done is done. At the most, we can learn from it. When we have learned, we will be aware. Next time, when such a particular incident come in front of us, we will consciously attempt to behave differently. Thus, it will bring some different outcomes. However, living in the past and regretting the things that we should not have said or should not have done will do no good to us. Similarly, the future is uncertain. Though we are planning, there are lots of factors that will decide our future outcome. It may or may not turn out the way we wanted it to. Thus, there is no point in worrying about what our future holds for us. Our present is our greatest gift. When we live in it completely, we do not live in our past or future. Thus, we neither regret nor fear anything.

I usually wake up at around 7:00 am. My actual alarm time is at 6:30 am but I always snooze it. In the holidays, I wake up around 12 o’ clock. My friends say that I am the laziest person in the world. The first thing I hear from my mum is, “You are late”. I will then stream downstairs for breakfast. My parents always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So I try my level best not to miss it.
