There are 4 modules in this course

The practice of investment management has been transformed in recent years by computational methods. This course provides an introduction to the underlying science, with the aim of giving you a thorough understanding of that scientific basis. However, instead of merely explaining the science, we help you build on that foundation in a practical manner, with an emphasis on the hands-on implementation of those ideas in the Python programming language.

This course is the first in a four course specialization in Data Science and Machine Learning in Asset Management but can be taken independently. In this course, we cover the basics of Investment Science, and we'll build practical implementations of each of the concepts along the way. We'll start with the very basics of risk and return and quickly progress to cover a range of topics including several Nobel Prize winning concepts. We'll cover some of the most popular practical techniques in modern, state of the art investment management and portfolio construction. As we cover the theory and math in lecture videos, we'll also implement the concepts in Python, and you'll be able to code along with us so that you have a deep and practical understanding of how those methods work. By the time you are done, not only will you have a foundational understanding of modern computational methods in investment management, you'll have practical mastery in the implementation of those methods.

Understanding portfolio construction

Start the portfolio construction course with module 1, which helps define portfolio construction and details how to get started with establishing an investment process.

What is portfolio construction?

In latin america, a common trend is to focus on individual, high-performing funds.

Remember to focus on more than high-performing funds

However, by not thinking about how individual funds work together, the portfolio can be exposed to  unintended risks . Adopting a portfolio construction process allows for a holistic approach to investing, which can improve the possibility for better investment outcomes.

3 action items to get started

Adopt the portfolio construction process.

After addressing the three preliminary action items, consider implementing the process BlackRock’s portfolio construction specialists set in place to build better portfolios. The process includes four steps: 1) Benchmark 2) Budget 3) Invest and 4) Monitor.

To build a house that is safe, functional, and economical, Adam has to understand how all of the elements of design fit together. Like Adam, financial professionals should understand how elements of a portfolio – like asset classes, weightings and different investment vehicles – work in unison.

For everything to work together as it should, Adam creates a blueprint. It is a way for him to see how the building process will play out, while making sure his clients’ goals are top of mind.

Likewise, for financial professionals, it is important to understand clients’ financial goals and the amount of risk they are willing to take to achieve them. Assessing the impact of investment fees and taxes on clients’ returns is equally important.

When the time comes to build a portfolio, BlackRock’s four-step process makes it easy to get started.

It all starts with benchmarking, which sets a standard for measuring performance throughout the investment process. Think of it as a blueprint that helps financial professionals navigate asset allocation.

The second step is budgeting. This involves weighing both the costs and risks of the portfolio, aiming to optimize returns.

The third step is investing. Before selecting an investment vehicle to invest in, it is important to have a strong due diligence process in place. This allows exposure, risk, cost, and performance of the investment vehicle to be considered before making an investment.

The final step is monitoring the portfolio, which involves assessing results and adjusting strategies as needed.

Like Adam, BlackRock understands that having a solid process improves the possibility of better investment outcomes and can help financial professionals achieve their clients’ goals.

Think differently

Taking a few extra steps to understand client objectives, how much risk they are willing to take on to achieve their goals and understanding how costs impact returns is foundational and will help financial professionals properly build out an optimized investment process.

This concludes the first module of the portfolio construction course. Read the next module , which takes a deep dive into the portfolio construction process, to continue the course.

4 Steps to Building a Profitable Portfolio

portfolio construction assignment

A well-diversified portfolio is vital to any investor's success. As an individual investor, you need to know how to determine an asset allocation that best conforms to your personal investment goals and risk tolerance. In other words, your portfolio should meet your future capital requirements and give you peace of mind while doing so. Investors can construct portfolios aligned to investment strategies by following a systematic approach. Here are some essential steps for taking such an approach.

Key Takeaways

  • Overall, a well-diversified portfolio is your best bet for the consistent long-term growth of your investments.
  • First, determine the appropriate asset allocation for your investment goals and risk tolerance.
  • Second, pick the individual assets for your portfolio.
  • Third, monitor the diversification of your portfolio, checking to see how weightings have changed.
  • Make adjustments when necessary, deciding which underweighted securities to buy with the proceeds from selling the overweighted securities.

Step 1: Determining Your Appropriate Asset Allocation

Ascertaining your individual financial situation and goals is the first task in constructing a portfolio. Important items to consider are age and how much time you have to grow your investments, as well as the amount of capital to invest and future income needs. An unmarried, 22-year-old college graduate just beginning their career needs a different investment strategy than a 55-year-old married person expecting to help pay for a child's college education and retire in the next decade.

A second factor to consider is your personality and risk tolerance. Are you willing to hazard the potential loss of some money for the possibility of greater returns? Everyone would like to reap high returns year after year, but if you can't sleep at night when your investments take a short-term drop, chances are the high returns from those kinds of assets are not worth the stress.

Clarifying your current situation, your future needs for capital, and your risk tolerance will determine how your investments should be allocated among different asset classes. The possibility of greater returns comes at the expense of greater risk of losses (a principle known as the risk/return tradeoff ). You don't want to eliminate risk so much as optimize it for your individual situation and lifestyle. For example, the young person who won't have to depend on his or her investments for income can afford to take greater risks in the quest for high returns. On the other hand, the person nearing retirement needs to focus on protecting their assets and drawing income from these assets in a tax-efficient manner.

Conservative vs. Aggressive Investors

Generally, the more risk you can bear, the more aggressive your portfolio will be, devoting a larger portion to equities and less to bonds and other fixed-income securities. Conversely, the less risk you can assume, the more conservative your portfolio will be. Here are two examples, one for a conservative investor and one for the moderately aggressive investor.

The main goal of a conservative portfolio is to protect its value . The allocation shown above would yield current income from the bonds, and would also provide some long-term capital growth potential from the investment in high-quality equities.

Once you've determined the right asset allocation, you need to divide your capital between the appropriate asset classes. On a basic level, this is not difficult: equities are equities and bonds are bonds.

But you can further break down the different asset classes into subclasses, which also have different risks and potential returns. For example, an investor might divide the portfolio's equity portion between different industrial sectors and companies of different market capitalizations , and between domestic and foreign stocks. The bond portion might be allocated between those that are short-term and long-term, government debt versus corporate debt and so forth.

There are several ways you can go about choosing the assets and securities to fulfill your asset allocation strategy (remember to analyze the quality and potential of each asset you invest in):

Stock Picking

Choose stocks that satisfy the level of risk you want to carry in the equity portion of your portfolio; sector, market cap, and stock type are factors to consider. Analyze the companies using stock screeners to shortlist potential picks, then carry out more in-depth analysis on each potential purchase to determine its opportunities and risks going forward. This is the most work-intensive means of adding securities to your portfolio, and requires you to regularly monitor price changes in your holdings and stay current on company and industry news.

Bond Picking

When choosing bonds, there are several factors to consider including the coupon, maturity , the bond type, and the credit rating, as well as the general interest-rate environment.

Mutual Funds

Mutual funds are available for a wide range of asset classes and allow you to hold stocks and bonds that are professionally researched and picked by fund managers . Of course, fund managers charge a fee for their services, which will detract from your returns. Index funds present another choice; they tend to have lower fees because they mirror an established index and are thus passively managed.

Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)

If you prefer not to invest with mutual funds, ETFs can be a viable alternative. ETFs are essentially mutual funds that trade like stocks. They're similar to mutual funds in that they represent a large basket of stocks, usually grouped by sector, capitalization , country, and the like. But they differ in that they're not actively managed , but instead track a chosen index or another basket of stocks. Because they're passively managed, ETFs offer cost savings over mutual funds while providing diversification. ETFs also cover a wide range of asset classes and can be useful for rounding out your portfolio.

Step 3: Reassessing Portfolio Weightings

Once you have an established portfolio, you need to analyze and rebalance it periodically, because changes in price movements may cause your initial weightings to change. To assess your portfolio's actual asset allocation, quantitatively categorize the investments and determine their values' proportion to the whole.

The other factors that are likely to alter over time are your current financial situation, future needs, and risk tolerance. If these things change, you may need to adjust your portfolio accordingly. If your risk tolerance has dropped, you may need to reduce the number of equities held. Or perhaps you're now ready to take on greater risk and your asset allocation requires that a small proportion of your assets be held in more volatile small-cap stocks .

To rebalance, determine which of your positions are overweighted and underweighted. For example, say you are holding 30% of your current assets in small-cap equities, while your asset allocation suggests you should only have 15% of your assets in that class. Rebalancing involves determining how much of this position you need to reduce and allocate to other classes.

Once you have determined which securities you need to reduce and by how much, decide which underweighted securities you will buy with the proceeds from selling the overweighted securities. To choose your securities, use the approaches discussed in Step 2.

When rebalancing and readjusting your portfolio, take a moment to consider the tax implications of selling assets at this particular time.

Perhaps your investment in growth stocks has appreciated strongly over the past year, but if you were to sell all of your equity positions to rebalance your portfolio, you may incur significant capital gains taxes. In this case, it might be more beneficial to simply not contribute any new funds to that asset class in the future while continuing to contribute to other asset classes. This will reduce your growth stocks' weighting in your portfolio over time without incurring capital gains taxes.

At the same time, always consider the outlook of your securities. If you suspect that those same overweighted growth stocks are ominously ready to fall, you may want to sell in spite of the tax implications. Analyst opinions and research reports can be useful tools to help gauge the outlook for your holdings. And tax-loss selling is a strategy you can apply to reduce tax implications.

Throughout the entire portfolio construction process , it is vital that you remember to maintain your diversification above all else. It is not enough simply to own securities from each asset class; you must also diversify within each class. Ensure that your holdings within a given asset class are spread across an array of subclasses and industry sectors.

As we mentioned, investors can achieve excellent diversification by using mutual funds and ETFs. These investment vehicles allow individual investors with relatively small amounts of money to obtain the economies of scale that large fund managers and institutional investors enjoy.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Balanced Portfolio

portfolio construction assignment

In the world of investment , building a balanced portfolio is like crafting a well-orchestrated symphony. Just as a conductor combines various musical instruments to create a harmonious masterpiece, an investor blends different asset classes to achieve financial harmony and optimize returns. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the art and science of creating a balanced investment portfolio that can weather market fluctuations and deliver steady growth.

Looking to create a balanced portfolio? Real estate investment is a key component. Amid various real estate investment avenues, structured debt in commercial real estate is emerging as a strong option. This offers attractive returns and consistent monthly income. With a modest investment of 10 lakhs, you can access this opportunity through the reputable alternative investment platform, Assetmonk.

What is a Balanced Portfolio?

A balanced portfolio definition combines a mix of asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, cash, and alternative investments, tailored to your risk tolerance and investment objectives. The goal is to achieve steady growth while mitigating risks by spreading your investments across various avenues.

What is a balanced investment portfolio example?

A balanced investment portfolio example or balanced portfolio example should look like the following.

  • Stocks: 50% – Investing in a mix of large-cap, mid-cap, and international stocks for growth potential.
  • Bonds: 30% – Allocating to government and corporate bonds for income and stability.
  • Real Estate: 10% – Including Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) for diversification and real estate exposure.
  • Alternative Investments: 10% – Adding structured debt in commercial real estate for consistent income and risk mitigation.

But how to create balanced portfolio or a perfectly balanced portfolio?

Step-Step Process on Building a Balanced Portfolio

  • Step 1: Begin by defining your needs and aspiration

The initial stride in the realm of investment is to comprehensively comprehend your distinct goals, investment horizon, and financial capital requisites. As an example, if your investment objective revolves around retirement, a crucial task is pinpointing the retirement age and the monetary target to be achieved.

  • Step 2: Evaluate your comfort with risk

Balanced Portfolio

Among the paramount aspects shaping your portfolio construction and investment choices is your personal affinity for risk. If you incline towards conservatism and possess a low tolerance for risk, a greater portion of your investments should ideally be allocated to bonds and cash equivalents, characterized by lower volatility. Conversely, if you adopt an aggressive stance, with an eagerness to embrace heightened risk for the prospect of amplified returns, channeling a significant portion of your capital into stocks becomes imperative.

  • Step 3: Define your asset allocation strategy

Balanced Portfolio

After delineating your financial aspirations, investment horizon, and risk appetite, the next stride involves curating your investment portfolio and selecting asset classes. The triad of asset classes encompasses stocks (equities), bonds, and cash equivalents. Once again, the asset class that resonates with you hinges on your financial objectives, investment timeline, and comfort level with risk. For instance, if your goal is to amass funds for retirement in your thirties, the horizon for utilizing these funds is considerably distant. Consequently, you might opt to allocate a larger chunk of your portfolio to stocks due to their superior growth potential. Conversely, if you’re approaching your fifties, tilting your asset allocation towards bonds or money market instruments, renowned for their lower risk profile, may prove more prudent.

  • Step 4: Cultivate diversification in your portfolio

Balanced Portfolio

An integral step that follows is diversification. For instance, if your asset allocation plan dictates that 60% of your investments are allocated to stocks, diversification entails broadening your stock portfolio to encompass both domestic and foreign stocks, along with stocks spanning diverse market capitalizations. Similarly, you can foster diversity within your bond holdings, considering factors like term and type, and combining government and corporate bonds. The path to diversification can be seamlessly paved by investing in mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or index funds—entities that pool resources into multiple securities—effectively curbing risk. Another avenue for diversification is the option of selecting lifecycle funds tailored to specific timeframes, such as retirement funds for distinct years.

  • Step 6: Regularly rebalance your portfolio

Balanced Portfolio

As both the financial markets and your life unfold, adopting a “set it and forget it” approach to your portfolio is inadvisable. Vigilantly monitoring your investments and consistently realigning your asset allocation is vital. This process entails gauging the percentage each asset class constitutes within your overall portfolio . Suppose your evaluation uncovers an overconcentration in one asset class—this prompts a reallocation towards an underrepresented category. This could involve divesting some stocks and redirecting the proceeds into bonds. When rebalancing, be mindful of potential tax implications, especially if you’re selling a security subject to capital gains tax. In such scenarios, it might be prudent to halt investment in the overrepresented asset class and channel those funds into the underrepresented category. The flexibility to rebalance your portfolio is ever-present, with the consensus favoring periodic reviews, ideally conducted once or twice annually.

Case Study: Building a Balanced Portfolio

Let’s walk through a practical case study of building a balanced portfolio for John, a 35-year-old investor with medium risk tolerance and a long-term goal of retirement. We’ll detail his asset allocation, investment choices, and how he monitors his portfolio over time.

Table 1: Asset Allocation Example

Table 2: Case Study – John’s Portfolio

Table 3: Rebalancing Example

By following these steps and adapting them to your unique financial situation, you’ll be well-equipped to construct a balanced portfolio that supports your financial aspirations and secures your investment journey for the long term.

Bottom Line

Building a balanced portfolio is a journey that involves careful consideration, research, and ongoing attention. By following this step-by-step guide and incorporating diversification strategies, you can create a portfolio that aligns with your goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon. Remember that investing is a long-term commitment, and maintaining a balanced approach will increase your chances of achieving investment success.

By now, you’re likely aware of the significance of including real estate and alternative investments in your quest to build a balanced portfolio. However, crafting a portfolio that aligns with your goals and risk tolerance demands a considerable amount of time and expertise. Fret not, though, for assistance is at hand.

In this pursuit, Assetmonk emerges as an exceptional alternative investment platform . Within its offerings, a diverse array of promising avenues awaits discerning investors. The principal production activity of construction companies is centralised on the investment and construction projects executed on various construction sites. In the pursuit of using the potential accumulated in the means of production, construction companies start to manage a number of projects implemented concurrently. Therefore, a project portfolio is a key challenge for the strategic management of modern construction companies. There is a way to deal with the multi-project phenomenon called the project portfolio management. At this level, specific features of construction production have to be taken into account. An efficient selection of the project portfolio, treated as the project portfolio management maturity, allows reducing the risk associated with investing in projects, by creating a combination of expenses on a number of projects. The strategies accepted by an organisation determine the project portfolio to the implementation according to some specific requirements (scop...

Several experts' surveys show that the success indicators of a new product in the market have a strong positive correlation with the performance of project portfolio management in organizations, and the success of the project is strongly related to the maturity of portfolio management. At the same time, it is noted that the existing portfolio management methodologies do not sufficiently consider the interaction of a potential project with an existing portfolio in terms of cash flow, schedule, or risk. To effectively manage a project portfolio, an organization can take the path of forming its management approach. To meet this challenge, it requires complete and well-structured information on existing standards and guidelines for project portfolio management. The proposals described in the literature and the views of experts on the components of an effective approach should also be considered. To select or develop an approach to portfolio management, it is proposed in this work to create a project portfolio management generalized body of knowledge. The structure and mathematical model of such the body of knowledge have been developed. Information on five common standards and portfolio management guides are added to the body of knowledge. A method is proposed for choosing an approach for managing a projects portfolio based on optimizing risks and management cost.

The paper describes the Unified Portfolio Management Model (UPPM). The model has been developed on the basis of the Project Management Institute (PMI Standard for Portfolio Management (PMS) and Organizational Project Management Maturity Model Knowledge Foundation (OPM3. It adopts the portfolio aligning processes from PMS and executing and controlling processes from OPM3 The model covers portfolio management in operational organizations as well as in project-based organizations. The model consists of four main process groups: Portfolio Governance, Portfolio Management, Directing Components and Component Management. Introduction In recent years, PMI has published two standards related to the area of portfolio management. The first of them was published in 2003 as an appendix to OPM3 (PMI, 2003). Three years later, the same organization issued a separate Portfolio Management Standard, PMS (PMI, 2006). These two models, taken together, have the following general weaknesses: • They descr...

Arena FC Krasnodar

Colossal columns with egla-mono 5031.

gmp Architects and Speech Architecture used over 10,000 m² of W.S. Tyler Architectural Mesh as ceiling design at the Arena FC Krasnodar in Russia.

portfolio construction assignment

Description

The new stadium of FC Krasnodar was designed by the German architecture firm gmp architects and the Russian office Speech Architecture. The monumental façade of the elliptical stadium is a total of 43 meters high and covered with light-colored travertine. Still under construction, the stadium has already been nicknamed the “Krasnodar Coliseum” because of its columns spread over three levels of the façade, which strongly resembles the ancient Roman Coliseum.
