Lean into being a facilitator — not an expert.

What happens when you have to give a presentation to an audience that might have some professionals who have more expertise on the topic than you do? While it can be intimidating, it can also be an opportunity to leverage their deep and diverse expertise in service of the group’s learning. And it’s an opportunity to exercise some intellectual humility, which includes having respect for other viewpoints, not being intellectually overconfident, separating your ego from your intellect, and being willing to revise your own viewpoint — especially in the face of new information. This article offers several tips for how you might approach a roomful of experts, including how to invite them into the discussion without allowing them to completely take over, as well as how to pivot on the proposed topic when necessary.

Giving a presentation is scary. Even if you’ve done it many times and the audience is small, you probably feel your heart race as you stand in the front of the room. And having to give a presentation in English adds more anxiety.

75% of people have a fear of public speaking. Non-native English speakers also worry about forgetting vocabulary, mispronouncing words, and not understanding questions from the people watching. But, presenting in English can be an opportunity to show your proficiency. In fact, research states that presentations are a good way to expand your vocabulary . 

Whether it’s at a work meeting, speaking at a conference, or facilitating a discussion, being a non-native English speaker can be a strength. Here are a few simple, effective tips to deliver an expert presentation in English.

Overcoming nerves

It’s normal to feel nervous before a presentation, but it’s important not to let nerves negatively affect how you perform. Preparation is essential – ensure that you have enough time to create, rehearse, and edit your presentation.

When you present in another language, you need to be confident. Trust that you do speak English well. In the days before the presentation, watch English TV, listen to music in English, and speak to people in English. The more you make English a natural part of your day, the more relaxed you’ll feel about presenting in it.

Closer to the presentation time, remember to:

  • Concentrate on your breathing. Take slow, long inhales through your nose and out through your mouth. Repeat as many times as you need until you feel your heart rate slow.
  • Bring a bottle with you. This way, you can drink and pace yourself when speaking.
  • Some research suggests that chewing gum can lower anxiety . If you do this, remember to take the gum out before getting started!

Writing an outline

An outline will help you structure your presentation and remember the main points. You can make a detailed outline or use basic notes. Both are fine, but don’t include so much information that you won’t remember it.

Think about what the purpose of your presentation is. Do you want to educate, entertain, inspire, or show your English skills? Next, think of the first thing you’re going to say –  perhaps a question, a statistic, or a statement. You might want to experiment with fun or new English words if you feel confident using them.

Then write your discussion points. There should be a minimum of three, and you need to know why you’re including each one and what you’re going to say about it. As you write, highlight the most relevant words in English and the ones that you sometimes forget.

Lastly, think about how to finish your presentation. Watch presentations and speeches from English speakers for inspiration. When you’re happy with your outline, read through it multiple times and check that it has a smooth flow.

Experts recommend rehearsing your presentation at least 10 times in full. Practice by yourself at first and use your outline. Pay attention to difficult parts and edit these points at the end. If there are words that are difficult to pronounce, replace them with easier ones – for example, use “star” instead of “asterisk”.

When you feel comfortable, rehearse without your outline and ask other people (preferably fluent English speakers) to watch you present. Ask for honest feedback and make changes based on their comments.

Answering audience questions

People asking questions is a good sign! To make sure that you answer well, follow these steps.

  • Tell people at the beginning of your presentation that you’ll take questions at the end.
  • Anticipate what questions you might be asked. If you were in the audience, what would you want to know? 
  • Don’t be afraid to ask audience members to repeat or rephrase their question if you don’t understand it. “Would you mind saying it another way?” or “I didn’t catch that, please could you elaborate?” are good ways to ask.
  • Take a brief pause and breath before replying. 
  • Reference data or quotes from your presentation – this is a powerful way to show that you’re an expert.
  • When you finish answering, check with the person that your response was clear, or if you need to give more details. 
  • If you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest and say. You could ask the questioner what they think or ask the question to the whole audience.

You’re more ready to deliver an expert presentation in English than you may think. With these tips to overcome nerves, write an outline, practice, and take questions, you’re set to impress audiences (and yourself).

How can you make a good presentation even more effective?

This page draws on published advice from expert presenters around the world, which will help to take your presentations from merely ‘good’ to ‘great’.

By bringing together advice from a wide range of people, the aim is to cover a whole range of areas.

Whether you are an experienced presenter, or just starting out, there should be ideas here to help you to improve.

1. Show your Passion and Connect with your Audience

It’s hard to be relaxed and be yourself when you’re nervous.

But time and again, the great presenters say that the most important thing is to connect with your audience, and the best way to do that is to let your passion for the subject shine through.

Be honest with the audience about what is important to you and why it matters.

Be enthusiastic and honest, and the audience will respond.

2. Focus on your Audience’s Needs

Your presentation needs to be built around what your audience is going to get out of the presentation.

As you prepare the presentation, you always need to bear in mind what the audience needs and wants to know, not what you can tell them.

While you’re giving the presentation, you also need to remain focused on your audience’s response, and react to that.

You need to make it easy for your audience to understand and respond.

3. Keep it Simple: Concentrate on your Core Message

When planning your presentation, you should always keep in mind the question:

What is the key message (or three key points) for my audience to take away?

You should be able to communicate that key message very briefly.

Some experts recommend a 30-second ‘elevator summary’, others that you can write it on the back of a business card, or say it in no more than 15 words.

Whichever rule you choose, the important thing is to keep your core message focused and brief.

And if what you are planning to say doesn’t contribute to that core message, don’t say it.

4. Smile and Make Eye Contact with your Audience

This sounds very easy, but a surprisingly large number of presenters fail to do it.

If you smile and make eye contact, you are building rapport , which helps the audience to connect with you and your subject. It also helps you to feel less nervous, because you are talking to individuals, not to a great mass of unknown people.

To help you with this, make sure that you don’t turn down all the lights so that only the slide screen is visible. Your audience needs to see you as well as your slides.

5. Start Strongly

The beginning of your presentation is crucial. You need to grab your audience’s attention and hold it.

They will give you a few minutes’ grace in which to entertain them, before they start to switch off if you’re dull. So don’t waste that on explaining who you are. Start by entertaining them.

Try a story (see tip 7 below), or an attention-grabbing (but useful) image on a slide.

6. Remember the 10-20-30 Rule for Slideshows

This is a tip from Guy Kawasaki of Apple. He suggests that slideshows should:

  • Contain no more than 10 slides;
  • Last no more than 20 minutes; and
  • Use a font size of no less than 30 point.

This last is particularly important as it stops you trying to put too much information on any one slide. This whole approach avoids the dreaded ‘Death by PowerPoint’.

As a general rule, slides should be the sideshow to you, the presenter. A good set of slides should be no use without the presenter, and they should definitely contain less, rather than more, information, expressed simply.

If you need to provide more information, create a bespoke handout and give it out after your presentation.

7. Tell Stories

Human beings are programmed to respond to stories.

Stories help us to pay attention, and also to remember things. If you can use stories in your presentation, your audience is more likely to engage and to remember your points afterwards. It is a good idea to start with a story, but there is a wider point too: you need your presentation to act like a story.

Think about what story you are trying to tell your audience, and create your presentation to tell it.

Finding The Story Behind Your Presentation

To effectively tell a story, focus on using at least one of the two most basic storytelling mechanics in your presentation:

Focusing On Characters – People have stories; things, data, and objects do not. So ask yourself “who” is directly involved in your topic that you can use as the focal point of your story.

For example, instead of talking about cars (your company’s products), you could focus on specific characters like:

  • The drivers the car is intended for – people looking for speed and adventure
  • The engineers who went out of their way to design the most cost-effective car imaginable

A Changing Dynamic – A story needs something to change along the way. So ask yourself “What is not as it should be?” and answer with what you are going to do about it (or what you did about it).

For example…

  • Did hazardous road conditions inspire you to build a rugged, all-terrain jeep that any family could afford?
  • Did a complicated and confusing food labelling system lead you to establish a colour-coded nutritional index so that anybody could easily understand it?

8. Use your Voice Effectively

The spoken word is actually a pretty inefficient means of communication, because it uses only one of your audience’s five senses. That’s why presenters tend to use visual aids, too. But you can help to make the spoken word better by using your voice effectively.

Varying the speed at which you talk, and emphasising changes in pitch and tone all help to make your voice more interesting and hold your audience’s attention.

9. Use your Body Too

It has been estimated that more than three quarters of communication is non-verbal.

That means that as well as your tone of voice, your body language is crucial to getting your message across. Make sure that you are giving the right messages: body language to avoid includes crossed arms, hands held behind your back or in your pockets, and pacing the stage.

Make your gestures open and confident, and move naturally around the stage, and among the audience too, if possible.

10. Relax, Breathe and Enjoy

If you find presenting difficult, it can be hard to be calm and relaxed about doing it.

One option is to start by concentrating on your breathing. Slow it down, and make sure that you’re breathing fully. Make sure that you continue to pause for breath occasionally during your presentation too.

If you can bring yourself to relax, you will almost certainly present better. If you can actually start to enjoy yourself, your audience will respond to that, and engage better. Your presentations will improve exponentially, and so will your confidence. It’s well worth a try.

Powerful and Effective Presentation Skills: More in Demand Now Than Ever

When we talk with our L&D colleagues from around the globe, we often hear that presentation skills training is one of the top opportunities they’re looking to provide their learners. And this holds true whether their learners are individual contributors, people managers, or senior leaders. This is not surprising.

Effective communications skills are a powerful career activator, and most of us are called upon to communicate in some type of formal presentation mode at some point along the way.

For instance, you might be asked to brief management on market research results, walk your team through a new process, lay out the new budget, or explain a new product to a client or prospect. Or you may want to build support for a new idea, bring a new employee into the fold, or even just present your achievements to your manager during your performance review.

And now, with so many employees working from home or in hybrid mode, and business travel in decline, there’s a growing need to find new ways to make effective presentations when the audience may be fully virtual or a combination of in person and remote attendees.

Whether you’re making a standup presentation to a large live audience, or a sit-down one-on-one, whether you’re delivering your presentation face to face or virtually, solid presentation skills matter.

Even the most seasoned and accomplished presenters may need to fine-tune or update their skills. Expectations have changed over the last decade or so. Yesterday’s PowerPoint which primarily relied on bulleted points, broken up by the occasional clip-art image, won’t cut it with today’s audience.

The digital revolution has revolutionized the way people want to receive information. People expect presentations that are more visually interesting. They expect to see data, metrics that support assertions. And now, with so many previously in-person meetings occurring virtually, there’s an entirely new level of technical preparedness required.

The leadership development tools and the individual learning opportunities you’re providing should include presentation skills training that covers both the evergreen fundamentals and the up-to-date capabilities that can make or break a presentation.

So, just what should be included in solid presentation skills training? Here’s what I think.

The fundamentals will always apply When it comes to making a powerful and effective presentation, the fundamentals will always apply. You need to understand your objective. Is it strictly to convey information, so that your audience’s knowledge is increased? Is it to persuade your audience to take some action? Is it to convince people to support your idea? Once you understand what your objective is, you need to define your central message. There may be a lot of things you want to share with your audience during your presentation, but find – and stick with – the core, the most important point you want them to walk away with. And make sure that your message is clear and compelling.

You also need to tailor your presentation to your audience. Who are they and what might they be expecting? Say you’re giving a product pitch to a client. A technical team may be interested in a lot of nitty-gritty product detail. The business side will no doubt be more interested in what returns they can expect on their investment.

Another consideration is the setting: is this a formal presentation to a large audience with questions reserved for the end, or a presentation in a smaller setting where there’s the possibility for conversation throughout? Is your presentation virtual or in-person? To be delivered individually or as a group? What time of the day will you be speaking? Will there be others speaking before you and might that impact how your message will be received?

Once these fundamentals are established, you’re in building mode. What are the specific points you want to share that will help you best meet your objective and get across your core message? Now figure out how to convey those points in the clearest, most straightforward, and succinct way. This doesn’t mean that your presentation has to be a series of clipped bullet points. No one wants to sit through a presentation in which the presenter reads through what’s on the slide. You can get your points across using stories, fact, diagrams, videos, props, and other types of media.

Visual design matters While you don’t want to clutter up your presentation with too many visual elements that don’t serve your objective and can be distracting, using a variety of visual formats to convey your core message will make your presentation more memorable than slides filled with text. A couple of tips: avoid images that are cliched and overdone. Be careful not to mix up too many different types of images. If you’re using photos, stick with photos. If you’re using drawn images, keep the style consistent. When data are presented, stay consistent with colors and fonts from one type of chart to the next. Keep things clear and simple, using data to support key points without overwhelming your audience with too much information. And don’t assume that your audience is composed of statisticians (unless, of course, it is).

When presenting qualitative data, brief videos provide a way to engage your audience and create emotional connection and impact. Word clouds are another way to get qualitative data across.

Practice makes perfect You’ve pulled together a perfect presentation. But it likely won’t be perfect unless it’s well delivered. So don’t forget to practice your presentation ahead of time. Pro tip: record yourself as you practice out loud. This will force you to think through what you’re going to say for each element of your presentation. And watching your recording will help you identify your mistakes—such as fidgeting, using too many fillers (such as “umm,” or “like”), or speaking too fast.

A key element of your preparation should involve anticipating any technical difficulties. If you’ve embedded videos, make sure they work. If you’re presenting virtually, make sure that the lighting is good, and that your speaker and camera are working. Whether presenting in person or virtually, get there early enough to work out any technical glitches before your presentation is scheduled to begin. Few things are a bigger audience turn-off than sitting there watching the presenter struggle with the delivery mechanisms!

Finally, be kind to yourself. Despite thorough preparation and practice, sometimes, things go wrong, and you need to recover in the moment, adapt, and carry on. It’s unlikely that you’ll have caused any lasting damage and the important thing is to learn from your experience, so your next presentation is stronger.

The four secrets to speaking with experts in the room

Many people who are otherwise confident presenters get nervous when they know that other experts will be in the audience. They think that when they’re the presenter they should know more about the topic than anyone else.

Some presenters focus so much on the other experts, that the presentation goes over the heads of everyone else in the audience.

Here are the secrets to speaking to an audience – with experts in the room.

1. You don’t have to know more than anyone else

Let go of the belief that you should know more about your topic than anyone else in the audience. That’s an unrealistic assumption and will set you up to be a nervous wreck by the time of the presentation.

2. Plan with the majority of the audience in mind

When you first start planning your presentation, plan with the majority of your audience in mind. Forget about the experts. Forget about the newbies.

3. Tweak for the newbies

Go through your presentation and look for any jargon, terms of art and acronyms that they might not instantly understand. Add an explanation. This will only take a few seconds and will ensure that they can stay on track with you.  Sometimes the experts in the room will say – oh I didn’t realise what that acronym stood for – so it can be useful for everyone.

4. Tweak for the experts

Let go of having to say something new or surprising to them. You can’t – they know all the facts and figures. And if you try and impress them in this way, you’ll quickly lose the rest of your audience. Instead impress them with the way that you explain your topic. For example, use a metaphor which hasn’t been used before. Have them say to themselves: “I hadn’t thought about it that way before” or “That’s an excellent way of explaining that concept.”

All about General Merchandise

Experts of operations, process and efficiency who enable a consistent experience for our guests by ensuring product is set, in-stock, accurately priced and signed on the sales floor. The General Merchandise and Food Sales team leads inbound, outbound, replenishment, inventory accuracy, presentation, pricing, and promotional signing processes for all GM areas of the store. This team leads Food & Beverage, and Food Service, providing a fresh and food safe experience. Experts enable efficient delivery to our guests by owning pick, pack, and ship fulfillment work.

At Target, we believe in our team members having meaningful experiences that help them build and develop skills for a career. The role of a Presentation Expert can provide you with the:

  • Knowledge of guest service fundamentals and experience supporting a guest-first culture across the store. 
  • Experience in retail business fundamentals: department sales trends, inventory management, process efficiency and improvement.
  • Experience executing daily/weekly workload to support business priorities and deliver on sales goals.

As a Presentation Expert, no two days are ever the same, but a typical day will most likely include the following responsibilities:

  • Greet and service guests as you complete workload with minimal guest disruption.
  • Deliver accurate and timely merchandise transitions for all areas of the store; adhere to street dates for new merchandise.
  • Ensure all signing, including promotional and planogrammed ISM, is set accurately when the transition is completed.
  • Ensure areas are guest ready and maintain presentation standards as you complete scheduled workload. This includes keeping the salesfloor fully stocked, backstocking excess product and fixtures, zoning, signing and labeling accurately.
  • Understand how operational procedures, like planogram (POG) ties, product capacities and salesfloor quantities impact shortage, profitability, in store replenishment and inventory accuracy.
  • Appropriately use and care for in-store and personal protective equipment; follow equipment control guidelines.
  • Ensure displays are in proper working condition and re-order, if necessary.
  • Have dedicated ownership of select GM areas to ensure sales floor is full, in stock and accurately signed for guests.
  • Conduct weekly price change workload for all GM categories.
  • Complete scans and system audit functions to ensure inventory accuracy.
  • Support guest services such as back up cashier, Order Pick Up (OPU) and Drive Up (DU).
  • Accurately execute all pulls (i.e. daily autofills, CAFs, planogram, out of stock, EXFs, manuals and guest requests) and backstock product from GM efficiently and timely.
  • Complete all backroom daily and weekly audits.
  • Operate power equipment only if certified.
  • Maintain backroom and fixture room organization, location accuracy and follow equipment guidelines.
  • Execute processes accurately with attention to detail, monitor own progress and accurately prioritize tasks.
  • Provide service and a shopping experience that meets the needs of the guest.
  • Demonstrate a culture of ethical conduct, safety, and compliance.
  • All other duties based on business needs.

How to Speak as an Expert to Non-Experts: Lessons Learned Working with Teams of Scientists

For many presenters delivering an engaging presentation is a formidable challenge, but if you are an expert in your field you may feel like you face even more of an uphill battle.  It seems the more technical the material, the more likely it is that you will speak over the heads of your audience and lose them in the process.

Over the years, I have worked with many clients in the biotech and pharma space.  When I am asked to provide training it is most often for the experts within the company - almost always the scientists.  The HR director says something like, "these people are amazing, experts in their field, but between you and me, when they present, we have no idea what they are talking about.  It is a 'data dump' and simply over everyone's head."

I've discovered the problem is not one-sided.  Not only is the audience frustrated they cannot understand or follow the material, in my conversations with experts they too struggle with how they can connect their research and data to the audience.  With very few exceptions no one wants to give an uninspiring presentation, and technical experts certainly have a desire to explain their material in a way that is engaging and impactful to the listener.

Here’s the tension the expert faces: while they want to engage the audience, they do not want to overly simplify their research or data.  

The presentation must be simple enough to be understood, yet not so simplistic that it undermines the significance of the data and technical details. The good news is that it is entirely possible to present technical information with integrity, but it requires the presenter to shift their approach.

A Mindset Shift 

If you are an expert, your work and life is about technical things.  You spend your time in the trenches, researching and developing utilizing complex methods.  When it is time to present, it is easy to think your task is to explain everything you do and know to the audience.  If you attempt to accomplish this, however, you will find yourself frustrated with a dispassionate audience each time you speak.

In order to connect with your audience, you must embrace the idea that when you speak it is not about the research - it is about them.  The goal of presenting is not to download everything you know into the minds of the listener, the goal is for you as the presenter is to connect with the audience, and then to connect the audience to your ideas.  

As the expert, you should not attempt to tell them everything you know, rather you should ask the question, “what is most helpful for this audience to know” and then share only that information. 

The Shift in Motion

In 2020 I worked with a global pharmaceutical company to prepare speakers for an upcoming internal conference.  The purpose of the conference was to create excitement company-wide around some break though developments in research.  This research brought the company significantly closer to curing some terrible diseases.  The conference included 20+ scientists sharing their research.  Each presenter was a gifted researcher and their work quite technical.

The audience for the conference was mixed.  Many scientists, for sure, but all departments were to be a part of the audience - HR, accounting, sales, etc.  The fear among the leadership was the scientific presentations would be so technical the audience would be checking email and crushing candy throughout the entire conference.  This fear was not only for the employees who were not directly involved in research, but also for the other scientists in attendance.  It turns out even experts can find the work of other experts quite boring.

Boredom here was not a viable option. Quite literally this company’s work saves lives.  The conference exists because it is vital that employees across all departments experience unity around the overall direction of the research and excitement around how close the team is to having drugs ready for the marketplace.

With this in mind, I went to work meeting with each presenter to review their material and design presentations that would connect with a non-expert audience while not betraying the seriousness of the science.

Three months after the conference I was working with a new client from this same company.  During one of our sessions, she asked me, "are you the one who coached the presenters for the conference last spring?"  When I replied yes, she paused for a moment and said, "oh, well that explains why those presentations were so good." Her reaction was consistent with the many positive evaluations submitted about the presentations.

So, how did we do it?  How did we take experts delivering technical information and connect to a wide audience?   

Here are a few tips if you are an expert looking to connect with non-experts:

‍ Speak to the Least Technical Person in the Room

If you speak to the least technical person in the room then you include everyone in your presentation.  This requires you to think through your audience, which will only help you connect with the whole.  

One practical way to accomplish this is to think through the terms and language you use.  For example, every company and area of expertise has its own set of acronyms and using them in a presentation effectively alienates a segment of any audience.  As you prepare ask yourself, “is there language or technical terms in my presentation that the least technical person in the room would not immediately understand?”  If so, consider changing your language or saying a full phrase instead of the acronym to include the entirety of the audience.

‍ Focus on One Thing

As we stated earlier, if you are an expert you do not want to be simplistic when you speak – that is, to ignore the complexity of the work that you do.  But, if you want to connect with your audience you do need to find a simple, clear way to present the information.

An effective way to accomplish this, is to focus on one thing. Ask yourself, if I ran into someone two weeks after this presentation, what is the one thing I hope they would remember?  This makes your preparation more effective by allowing you to focus on presenting one key idea with great clarity rather than feeling the pressure to present multiple complex ideas, which will inevitably leave the audience overwhelmed.

In 1996 famed MIT mathematician and philosopher Gian-Carlo Rota delivered a talk entitled, "Ten Lessons I Wish I Had Been Taught." Lesson number 1 is this - "Every lecture should state one main point and repeat it over and over." Rota went on to say, "an audience is like a herd of cows, moving slowly in the direction they are being driven towards. [When we present more than one idea] the cows will scatter all over the field. The audience will lose interest and everyone will go back to the thoughts they interrupted in order to come to our lecture."

It takes more effort to be clear than complex.

When you center your presentation on one idea you gain clarity.

‍ Use Metaphor and Personal Stories to Illustrate your Idea

Metaphor and stories are effective ways to explain complicated ideas to a novice audience.  As an expert getting ready to present, take a look at the points in your presentation and ask yourself, “what is this like?”

If you are saying something is small, is it small like a thimble compared to the moon or like a sedan compared to an SUV?  If you are explaining a process, is there some common life experience you can compare this process to?  Is it like learning to ride a bike or cooking a meal?  

One presenter for the conference above was excited about her research.  Her team successfully created a cell that functioned in a variety of ways.  The possibilities this research opened were very exciting.  I asked her what this cell was like, and after thinking for a bit she said it was kind of like a swiss army knife.  The official name of the cell is a combination of numbers and letters no one outside of the research would remember.  And yet, when she referred to this cell as the “swiss army knife” of cells, the audience connected and remembered.

Once you have a metaphor, ask, “do I have a personal story I can share?  For example, if you add a personal story to the metaphor above about the time your grandpa gave you a swiss army knife, you will only increase your connection with your audience and their connection with your idea.

‍ Allow for Questions

Allowing time for questions is an effective way to include the entire audience in your presentation.

If you have done well speaking to the person with the least amount of knowledge in the room, then they will feel comfortable asking questions to bring about further clarification.

If someone with greater expertise wishes you would have gone into more detail this is their opportunity to ask you to dig deeper.  In your response recognize that you’re about to share technical information.  Say something like, “I realize not everyone in the room will understand this, but to answer your question . . .”  Those who are less technical will be glad you acknowledged their presence.

Presenting as an expert to non-experts can be a challenge, but it is possible for an expert to inspire a less technical audience.  Above all, as you prepare your presentation, remember, it’s about them.

This might sound like a simple question, with an obvious answer. But is it? What is p resentation training?!

Businesses come to us almost every day and say ‘We would like to book some presentation training for our team. Can you help?’ The obvious answer, being business presentation skills experts, is ‘Yes, we can, and we’d love to help!’. But do businesses really know what they’re asking?

When we drill down and ask them to elaborate they often find it difficult to articulate details around why their people want/need the training. So, we thought it might be useful to share with the broader L&D community, and indeed anyone in business, what presentation training is.

We know from our many years’ of experience coaching exclusively in business presentation skills that both confidence, and delivering better presentations, come by getting all the key elements of what makes a good presenter and presentation sorted. Rather than by confidence being instilled as a thing in itself, or by people being given some ‘acting’ tips for standing up in front of an audience.

Very few people enjoy sitting in a presentation and being talked at. Instead they prefer to be communicated with. You don’t need to be a Mac whizz to put these simple principles into  practise. And why wouldn’t you? Bad slides can destroy a great presentation and completely undermine a great presenter. So, understanding the principles of good slide deck design should always be a part of any presentation training.

Let’s be clear. Nerves are not a bad thing. In fact, nerves show we care (versus being complacent or arrogant). And nervous energy can have many benefits. They can make us sharper, more focussed, disciplined and on ‘on point’. The issue is when our negative nervous energy overtakes our positive nervous energy . That’s where coaching can help to calm nerves . Unfortunately, there isn’t a silver bullet to managing negative nervous energy. That’s because the causes, and the solutions, vary from person to person. 

Examples of why people are excessively and negatively nervous can include that presenting is a new thing for them; or that they’re under-prepared, or don’t feel their content is going to be relevant. Or that they’ve had a bad experience in the past, or they’re worried about the tech falling over (very common these days with online presenting). Or they’re concerned they’ll be asked a challenging question that they won’t know the answer to. Or that they think they’ll get tongue tied, or will have a brain freeze. Or simply that they’re scared the audience won’t like them. 

All these causes are valid. And all of these causes, with the right coaching, can be overcome. But you can see that a blanket approach won’t work – because everyone is different. Hence why, even in a group presentation skills training workshop, everyone needs to have plenty of individual practise time, as well as detailed and personalised feedback guidance and coaching.

In summary, expert presentation training isn’t just about instilling confidence, or developing narrow skills in one ‘pillar’. Instead presentation training is really an umbrella term that covers a wide range of intermeshing skills. Skills that fall into the above 6 pillars, and skills that with practise can add immeasurably to an individual’s career success and to the achievements of a business or organisation.

7 Steps to Delivering a Technical Presentation

So you want to share the fruits of your technical labor with a presentation? Perhaps, you’re an engineer, a maker, a coder, or a designer, and you’re looking to discuss a research study, explain a process, or demonstrate a product.

Regardless of the agenda,  speaking to a group  can be intimidating. However, there are steps you can take to deliver an effective technical presentation that gets your point across and appeals to the audience.

Whether you’re presenting in person or via  web conferencing software , the following tips and best practices will help you be prepared, feel more confident, and set up the tools you need to conduct your presentation without any issues.

Know your subject matter

A great presentation isn’t about reading a bunch of slides – your attendees are capable of reading much faster on their own.

If you are going to pack your slides with dozens of details and bullet points, you might as well ditch the slides and write an article instead. It’s difficult for the audience to listen to a presenter and read a lot of information at the same time.

Your job as a presenter is to be the expert that your attendees expect you to be. Keep your slides simple and minimal. In fact, 91% of people say that  well-designed slides  help  boost their confidence  when giving a presentation.

Remember that your slides are not the star of the show, you are. Help your audience understand and make sense of what they are reading in your slides. To do this, make sure you are using a  suitable structure  for your presentation.

You can do these things only when you’re well-versed in what you’re presenting. The slides are supposed to be your outline, or simply a table of contents to remind you what to cover during the presentation.

Know your audience

Knowing your audience  is crucial for any presentation, but it’s even more important for a technical one. If your audience is as experienced and comfortable with the topic of your presentation as you are, then you don’t want to dumb it down to the extent that it bores them.

On the other hand, you don’t want to give a complex presentation to an audience with no clue of what you’re talking about.

There may also be times when your attendees are people with different levels of technical skill, experience, and interests. Then your job is to make sure that the content of your presentation is relevant and doesn’t alienate any of those segments.

To understand how technical you need to be, consider what your audience might already know and how much is required for them to understand to meet your goal.

If your objective is to acquire funding, for instance, your audience will be more interested in financial benefits than the technical details of your product. The idea is to meet the needs of your audience, not to fuel your passion for engineering.

Configure your IDE

Since you’re delivering a technical presentation, there may be instances where you’ll want to walk your audience through your development environment, code scripts, software demos, or other technical components.

However, you may have adjusted how things look on the screen according to what’s the most convenient for your usual workflow. And what’s good for working in your day-to-day routine may not render well as you go full screen in presentation mode.

If the attendees can’t decipher what’s on the screen, they’ll get confused and will find it hard to focus on your talk. So it’s important that you customize whatever you’re going to show in your presentation such that it’s easily readable and viewable.

There are several steps you can take to make this happen. First of all, don’t use dark backgrounds. Light-colored backgrounds are easy on the eyes. Second, adjust your font styles and sizes to make sure they’re big enough.

And finally, learn to zoom in on specific areas as required, depending on whether you’re using a  Windows PC  or a  Mac system .

Minimize distractions

Nothing is more annoying than to keep getting disruptive notifications or popups from in the middle of your presentation. These can be from your operating system (Windows or Mac), or apps such as Slack, Email, Twitter, and more.

At times, these notifications can be personal, embarrassing, or contain confidential information that you don’t want your audience to see.

Therefore, it’s best to make sure in advance that there are no unpleasant surprises. Before you get up to give your presentation, turning off your notifications can go a long way.

This will also reduce the number of processes running on your machine and free up available resources. As a result, the resource-intensive programs that are part of your presentation will run a lot smoother. Here’s how to turn off  notifications for Windows ,  Google Chrome , and  Mac .

Get the right equipment

If you want to be a master presenter, you should have the proper tools for the job. The basics include a desktop or laptop machine with good configuration, a big display screen, presentation software (usually MS Powerpoint or Keynote), and a clicker/pointer device.

If you have no idea about what will be available at your presentation venue, then carry one piece of each of the commonly used cables and adapters. You’ll thank us later.

Rehearse in advance

Practice your slides and your demo multiple times before the presentation, even if you have presented the exact same thing in the past. Do not make any assumptions about your actual presentation environment based on your practice environment.

Technologies and situations change, and you may find things that catch you off guard. Run through everything at least once the night before just to be sure.

Even better if you can record yourself during these rehearsal presentations and watch the recordings later to find areas of improvement.

Also, if you’re relying on downloading or doing something in front of the audience that may require a high-speed internet connection, don’t assume you’ll have access to such a network during your presentation. Download and install whatever you need ahead of time.

Finally, enjoy the experience

You’re giving a technical presentation, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring, or that you have to be serious all the time as you talk.

It’s okay to have fun, crack some jokes,  tell a story ,  ask a rhetorical question  or invite participation from the audience when presenting. In fact, a study showed that presentations that don’t let the audience participate see a  drop of 14%  in engagement.

Don’t worry too much about things going wrong. See every presentation as a dialogue with your attendees and an opportunity to learn and be a better presenter. If you are enjoying yourself, so will your audience.

10 Tips for a Persuasive Presentation

Powerful presentation is persuasion. here's how to elevate your impact..

How many of us realize that giving a presentation or making a speech is all about persuasion , influence, and emotional intelligence ? Impactful presenters understand the power of empathy to understand and engage their audience, the efficiency and kindness of having a clear objective and message, and the importance of substance and style—all as a way to connect in a way that engages and inspires.

Much has been written on the power and behavioral science of persuasion, not least by expert Robert Cialdini. His bestselling book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion explains seven research-based universal principles of influence .

From my experience as a leadership coach working with thousands of people worldwide, I have compiled a list of ten essentials to elevate our presentation.

1. Maintain an "other" focus. What do you know about your audience and how can you find out more? Ask yourself what kind of a speaker will appeal to your audience, what arguments are likely to resonate with them, and what feelings you want to inspire so the audience will positively respond to your ask. If your audience is predominantly data-driven, you may want to use more evidence-based arguments. If the audience is mixed, a combination of data, authority, and storytelling may be more appropriate. Extend Daniel Goleman’s three types of empathy to gather intelligence , understand your audience, and tailor your intervention to connect more profoundly.

2. Determine a specific objective: Presentations aim to effect change in some way. What change do you want to see in your audience? Every presentation aims to change the audience in some way. For instance, gaining their approval for a certain investment, soliciting their buy-in for a change, or creating a sense of enthusiasm for an idea or initiative. The purpose of a presentation is to bring about change so make sure you are clear on what kind of change you want to bring about.

3. Design a grabber: Our attention spans have shrunk as we have more and more competing demands on our attention . If you want to get someone’s attention you need to grab it at the outset and try and hold on. You can do this in a number of different ways. Throw out a question that demands a response from the audience. Give a surprising fact or statistic, or quote from a well-known figure. Tell a story or an anecdote. A good grabber captures the attention of everyone there, and makes them focus on what you have to say.

4. Crystalize your message and construct your arguments : Your message is the heart of your speech. Craft a brief phrase that clearly defines your proposal in 10-12 words. For example, “This post is about crafting presentations that inspire and engage others to elevate their presentations.” Make it memorable by choosing inspiring words, symbols, catchy expressions, something that will remain in the audience's mind. As Brené Brown says: “Clear is kind,” and a clear message provides a path to develop your ideas.

When you have a clear and concise message, it helps you formulate your arguments. Think of developing your arguments using the rule of three —three compelling arguments to convince but not overwhelm your audience.

5. Prepare a call to action: Remember, we want to change our audience in some way, so we need to make our ask in a clear and concrete manner.

Consider your call to action in terms of what you want your audience to think/feel/do:

  • Think—“I want you to think about how you can improve your presentations.”
  • Feel—“I want you to feel enthusiastic and motivated so that you can elevate your power to persuade.”
  • Do—“I want you to try out some of these tips and tools for yourself.”

6. Craft a memorable closing: Close the speech in an elegant and memorable way. We need people to remember what we've told them, so prepare it well. This is not the time to improvise. Try to connect your closing to your opening grabber, which makes the presentation more memorable. Good preparation means preparing everything to the very end—finish well.

7. Plan your delivery: A dynamic speaker draws listeners in by using vocal variety (tone, intonation, speed, volume, pace, pauses, silence) and body language (posture, gestures, expression, and movement) to highlight important points and hold the audience’s attention. Be intentional: How will you use your voice and your body to emphasize a thought or idea? Think about it: If you increased the time you spent on style or delivery by 20 percent, what would it mean for the impact you make?

8. Think about how you will engage your audience : You want the audience to feel considered throughout. Include pauses so they can process what’s being said; connect with individuals throughout the room and make deliberate eye contact while speaking, especially when delivering key points. Read and respond to the audience by changing how you deliver as you go based on the audience’s nonverbal communication .

9. Rehearse and Practice: Practice is one of the most crucial elements of presenting—and probably the most neglected one. If this is new to you start by reading your presentation in front of a mirror to get comfortable speaking your presentation. Next, video yourself and watch out for nervous or distracting habits to eliminate them and identify any areas where you can improve your delivery. If you are feeling brave, practice in front of an audience and ask for feedback.

10. Prepare your success rituals and mantra: Public speaking and/or stage fright can feel debilitating for some. Have your calm-down ritual prepared and ready to go before you start your presentation. This might be a certain gesture, a power pose, breathwork, or a mantra. Try this tip: Identify three adjectives to describe how you would like to show up during this presentation. This sets an intention and helps focus our cognitive and emotional resources on success.

If you've ever filled out a census form, you might remember answering questions about your ancestry.

In recent years, the census has asked respondents a combination of questions on their country of birth, ancestry, language spoken and religion.

There's now a call for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to ask another question, specifically about ethnicity.

While asking respondents about their ethnicity could sound similar to asking them about their ancestry, experts argue ethnicity data would be more precise and could help address the gaps in health outcomes for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The federal government announced two years ago it would begin the process of collecting ethnicity data targeting the 2026 census.

But in December, the ABS announced it would not be moving forward with the plan for the upcoming census.

The government agency released a statement on its website explaining the decision, saying despite testing multiple concepts around ethnic identity there were significant issues.

"Most notably, the testing showed that the public is unlikely to have a consistent understanding of what ethnic identity is, or the difference between ethnic identity and ancestry. The ABS determined that due to these complexities, collecting both ethnic identity and ancestry on the same form is not feasible for the 2026 Census," it wrote.

So what's the difference between ethnicity and ancestry, and why do some experts argue the way Australia measures diversity needs to change?

What is the difference between ancestry and ethnicity?

The difference between ancestry and ethnicity is complex and open to interpretation, and commentators say this is part of the issue.

In 2021, these were the questions related to diversity asked by the ABS:

What is the person's ancestry? In which country was the person born? In what year did the person first arrive in Australia to live for one year or more? In which country was the person's father born? Does the person use a language other than English at home? How well does the person speak English? What is the person's religion? Is the person an Australian citizen? Is the person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin?

This is how the ABS described ancestry data collected at the last census:

"The ancestry question records association with ancestries, ethnic origins and cultures. The intent of the question is to capture the cultural context in which people were raised, however, some people may respond according to how they may identify with a particular cultural group. "Ancestry in the Australian context is complex as there are many people with origins and heritage that do not, in practice, relate to their current ethnic identity."

The United Nations describes ethnicity as a broadly defined term that is based on a shared understanding of the history and territorial origins of an ethnic group or community.

Social epidemiologist Naomi Priest from the Australian National University said ancestry data was about the geographic region of someone's ancestry, while ethnicity data is more specific about a person's cultural identity.

"There's also a lot of confusion between what's your genetic ancestry? What's your cultural identity? What's your ethnicity?" she said. 

What is the argument for collecting ethnicity data?

Demographers have highlighted the importance of data collected in the census because it often has an impact on how data is collected in both the public and private sectors.

Professor Priest  has researched the impact of racism  on health.

She explained health determinants and treatment in healthcare are often patterned by ethnicity, and that collecting this data becomes an important accountability tool for governments.

"We need to have the nuance around this and remember that it's racism and social structures that shape health," she said.

"It's absolutely a health equity issue, and it's an accountability issue, but also for communities to have access to their own data that represents and captures their own experiences."

She pointed to examples in the United Kingdom where the National Health Service started a Race and Health Observatory during the pandemic in 2021.

Professor Priest — who has worked with the expert body — explained Britain's Medicare equivalent has placed its focus on creating research and policy addressing the health inequities in the country.

"Reporting most carefully with and in partnership with communities and, also building capacity amongst the workforce that it's racism, not race that's the risk factor for for these inequities," she said.

Some experts disagree with the collection of ethnicity data

But some experts like Amrita Malhi from the Australian National University have said ethnicity isn't a stable constant feature to be easily defined.

"We'd have to determine what ethnicity is, and who is entitled to refer to their preferred group identity as an 'ethnicity'," she said.

"There are simply no stable, universal answers to these questions – whatever we settle on will hold true for some groups but not others."

She explained that ethnicity was contested, and understood through shifts in society, for example, Australia's growing diversity.

"Now that there are simply so many more of us 'ethnics' living here, it is simply impossible to ignore our many intersecting forms of diversity," she said.

Dr Malhi added that sorting people into ethnicities could be seen as an attempt to freeze the changes in a diverse society to make it easier to read social identities when they are complicated.

"Creating formal, permanent ethnic and racial categories tends to socialise and harden those categories so they structure our experiences and opportunities even more than they did before," she said.

"This is obviously not what Australian advocates have been calling for, but it is consistent with how states have used census categories all around the world."

The ABS says it tested multiple concepts around ethnicity

The terms tested by the government agency included ethnic groups, cultural background, ethnic and cultural background, and the culture you belong to.

It also tested questions on ancestry and ethnic identity together.

But, the ABS said testing showed people had different interpretations of the term ethnic identity, with some considering it linked with ancestry even after an explanation was provided.

"Inconsistencies with public understanding of 'ethnic identity' may lead to poor data quality, impact the comparability of existing cultural diversity data over time," a spokesperson said.

The ABS said there was no single measure that could represent the multi-dimensional nature of the concept of ethnicity, which is why it instead asked multiple questions.

The ABS said it is also considering increasing the number of ancestries a respondent can choose from — two to four — to improve data quality, as well as allow respondents to reflect more complex cultural backgrounds.

The government agency explained that while ethnicity data is collected in other countries, they each had different ways of measuring ethnicity.

"Australia uses an ancestry approach for measuring ethnic group affiliation, which is similar to the approaches used by Statistics Canada," the spokesperson said.

At the last census in 2021, Canada had a list of more than 500 ethnic or cultural origins included as a guide, which experts say is based on commonly indicated groups.

Canada asks its population about both ethnicity and ancestry. 

Question: What were the ethnic or cultural origins of this person's ancestors? Ancestors may have Indigenous origins, or origins that refer to different countries, or other origins that may not refer to different countries. For examples, refer to this list of ethnic or cultural origins. Specify as many origins as applicable.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles declined to comment.

First Nations health expert says not collecting ethnicity data is 'racist'

The phrase Gunditjmara leader Jill Gallagher hears more often than most is closing the gap.

But the long-time chief executive of Victoria's peak Aboriginal advocacy health organisation said without ethnicity data, she would be in the dark about how to address the inequalities facing First Nations communities.

She pointed to the Beautiful Shawl program, a trial started by the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, calling it an example of where good evidence-based data can have material change.

The program has been running since 2018 to provide breast screening for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in partnership with BreastScreen Victoria.

"It was very obvious that Aboriginal people in Victoria weren't accessing screening facilities for cancer. So when they did get diagnosed, it was way too late," Ms Gallagher said.

Last year, it had the highest number of First Nations women participating in the project , and the largest number who had a screening for the first time.

That's why Ms Gallagher said bluntly not collecting ethnicity, specifically in health settings, is racist.

"If we can't measure, whatever, programs or things that we put in place, if we can't measure the outcome of it, then why do it," Ms Gallagher said.

"I think it's racist if you don't [collect the data]."

Demographer warns time is running out to add ethnicity data to the census

Demographer Liz Allen from the Australian National University explained there's been a move to use by-product data, which is data collected from across government agencies, as an alternative to the census.

She said the ABS took measures ahead of the last census after the failures in 2016 which saw a mass outage of the census website  that prevented thousands of people from completing the survey online for the first time.

The analysis, Dr Allen said, was conducted by the ABS using administrative by-product data to see how closely it matched with the traditional census.

"It came pretty close ... the ABS currently can run a census without having to speak to anyone, without having anyone fill out the census form," she said.

There have been suggestions in the UK  and New Zealand that the days of the traditional census may be over.

Dr Allen said that if Australia moved in this direction it would be difficult to add new data fields like ethnicity which doesn't exist within the by-product data gathered across government agencies.

For example, it was not until last year the National Suicide and Self-harm Monitoring System began collecting data on suicide by country of birth.

"We're now seeing the death of the traditional census in the UK and New Zealand ... The problem for us is that if we don't get it up, soon, we won't ever have that data."

The Smaller iPads Are Renewed

Apple also refreshed the iPad Air and the classic iPad during the event. The latter sees a price cut down to $349, while the former comes with a processor upgrade that offers it more power to challenge the Mac range with an M2 variant now available:

"In contrast, the new iPad Air comes with a slightly bigger screen than before, 11 inches, and adds a second screen size, 13 inches, which has never been seen before. The previous Air had the Apple M1 chip on board, and that’s been bumped up to M2—the same processor that powers the latest iMac."

Welcome To The M4

Sitting at the heart of the iPad Pro is Apple’s new M4 chipset. This is the first M4 device to be launched, and it’s notable that it is not debuting with the Mac range, even though the specifications feel more like a desk-bound than an in-hand device:

"The M4 uses second-gen 3nm technology, and its 10-core CPU is configured with four performance cores and six efficiency cores, making it 50 percent more powerful than the M2 inside the prior iPad Pro, according to Apple. The M4’s 10-core GPU also supports dynamic caching, mesh shading, and ray tracing, plus a new display engine with four times the rendering speed compared to the M2."

Is The New iPhone A Handful?

Meanwhile, one of the big iPhone 16 Pro Max changes has been discussed this week. With recent leaks suggesting the Pro Max is getting bigger, is the largest iPhone screen going to be difficult to hold?

"How big are your hands? Same size as yesterday, right? Some of the most recent leaks about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series have revealed that there could be noticeable size increases coming. According to the reliable Sonny Dickson on X a few days ago, it’s the iPhone 16 Pro Max which is going to be the grip-stretcher, thanks to its biggest-ever screen size, 6.9 inches, a noticeable increase from the current iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 6.7 inches."

The Foldable MacBook

How would you comfortably carry a 20-inch MacBook? According to analyst Jeff Pu, Apple’s supply chain is gearing up to ship such a device with a foldable screen that takes it closer to a 13-inch laptop… although we might have to wait a year:

"Apple is ramping up its work on foldable devices, according to a new investor note seen by 9to5Mac. The report, from Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu, says that Apple will begin mass production of a 20.3-inch foldable device in late 2025, followed by a foldable iPhone in late 2026.

"If today’s report from Pu is to be believed, Apple has “accelerated” its work on foldable devices. The report says that there is “increasing visibility” of Apple’s foldable devices based on supply chain checks.

Investigating Backdoored iPhones

Dan Goodin is reporting the discovery of an iPhone Zero-Day Exploit for Ars Technica. This is notable both for the length of time it has been available and the process that is being used.

"Researchers on Wednesday presented intriguing new findings surrounding an attack that over four years backdoored dozens if not thousands of iPhones, many of which belonged to employees of Moscow-based security firm Kaspersky. Chief among the discoveries: the unknown attackers were able to achieve an unprecedented level of access by exploiting a vulnerability in an undocumented hardware feature that few if anyone outside of Apple and chip suppliers such as ARM Holdings knew of."

"Users can get a director's view of each camera in real time, and the settings can be adjusted from the Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 app. There are options for tweaking exposure, focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and zoom to get the perfect shots. Preview clips are passed through to Final Cut Pro and then replaced with full-resolution files so users can quickly move from production to editing."

Many Americans are struggling financially due to factors such as high inflation and correspondingly high interest rates , which increase the costs of financing. And, once you get into debt, it can be hard to get out, considering that you not only need to save up enough or divert money toward the initial amount owed but also need to pay interest on the balances you've been carrying. 

Meanwhile, other essential bills, like housing and food, have increased recently due to inflation, causing some people to fall further behind on debt payments. For example, the number of credit card and auto loan delinquencies has been on the rise recently, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York .

When you stop paying your debts or don't follow the expected repayment schedule, you could face debt collection efforts, which, if ignored, could ultimately lead to issues like lawsuits and the seizure of your assets. The good news, however, is that if you have debts in collections, you can often settle with debt collectors for less than the full amount owed.

What is the lowest amount debt collectors will settle for? What experts say 

The short answer is that there's no universal settlement amount that debt collectors will accept. Every situation is unique. However, there are some factors that help dictate the lowest amount debt collectors will take as a settlement, including the following:

Who the debt collector is

Not all debt collectors are the same, and that can affect your debt settlement .

"Every creditor is different. Some creditors will accept pennies on the dollar, others will not settle for less than 80% in a lump sum payment," says Jessika Arce Graham, partner at Weiss Serota Helfman Cole + Bierman.

However, your odds of a lower settlement are better when the debt collector is a debt buyer, says Christopher E. Roberts, partner at Butsch Roberts & Associates LLC.

"Debt buyers are typically companies that purchase large amounts of delinquent debts from the creditor or another debt buyer," Roberts explains.

The reason why debt buyers often settle for less than what's owed on the debt is that they typically purchase debt for a fraction of the cost.

"Thus, if a debt buyer purchased a $1,000 debt for $30-$50, then a consumer may have more options to settle for significantly less than the full balance, as the debt buyer would stand to make a large profit in this scenario, even if they settled for $500," adds Roberts.

Your repayment offer

How you go about trying to pay off your debt can also affect how low debt collectors will settle for.

"Creditors are more willing to accept an offer when there is cash up front over a payment plan," says Arce Graham.

That said, you want to be sure that you understand the fine print of any debt settlement offer you agree to, as you might not be as done with that debt as you assumed.

"Always be aware that making a payment will likely restart the statute of limitations for the debt to be pursued against you in court," says Roberts.

The validity of the debt

Just because you're dealing with debt collectors doesn't necessarily mean you owe the full amount they claim. And, in some cases, they might not be able to prove you owe that debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) gives consumers the right to request validation of a debt and/or dispute the debt, explains Roberts. And depending on what the results are, that could affect your negotiations .

"If the validation shows that the debt is valid and the debt collector has their ducks in a row. then perhaps the consumer resolved the debt for a little more than if the debt collector's validation shows that the debt collector cannot substantiate the debt or that the consumer owes the amounts," says Roberts.

"In the latter scenario, perhaps the consumer has better leverage to not pay the debt or to pursue a case against the debt collector under the FDCPA," Roberts adds.

Ideally, though, you can verify debt before it ends up in collections. With medical debt, for example, you might request an itemized receipt to make sure you're being charged for the right medical services.

"A percentage of medical bills contain errors, so before a bill is sent to collections, it's important to look it over carefully and make sure it matches the care you received. If your employer offers care navigation, checking a bill for errors may be part of the services that are included," says Nick McLaughlin, strategic advisor at Emry Health.

Alternatives to settling with debt collectors

Settling with debt collectors isn't your only option for debt relief . In some cases, for example, you might find that it's better to use a debt relief service to negotiate for debt forgiveness on your behalf. Or if the debt collector is not budging, taking out a debt consolidation loan to pay off the existing debt and then having a more affordable monthly payment may work better for you.

Also, bankruptcy can be an option, although this can be a more involved process that hurts your credit even more. Still, it can be effective.

"If you are facing multiple creditors and you simply do not have enough money to resolve all of your debts, do not enter into a deal with just one if you will not be able to pay the others. At that point, perhaps bankruptcy is your best option," says Arce Graham.

The bottom line

Whether you're looking to lower your medical debt, gain credit card debt forgiveness , or handle many other types of debts, there's often room to negotiate. That's especially true for unsecured debt, where the creditor can't simply reclaim an asset to cover most of the debt. However, it's important to remember that debt settlement isn't a one-size-fits-all option. In some cases, you may want to consider consulting with a qualified expert, such as an attorney, to see which debt relief options work best for you.
