What Is A Graduate Certificate? Everything You Need To Know

Just like in a video game, leveling up is essential to advancing your career. A graduate certificate can boost your stats and demonstrate that you have unlocked a new set of skills. Benefits of earning a graduate certificate include broadening your professional opportunities, increasing your salary and qualifying for new jobs.

Unlike a master’s degree, which can take two or three years to finish, a graduate certificate can take as little as four to eight months. Without knocking the well-rounded nature of a master’s degree, one perk of a graduate certificate is that it offers a more specialized level of study. You might even argue that due to its concentrated focus, a graduate certificate focuses on practical skills more than a master’s degree.

The biggest benefit of a graduate certificate is that it showcases your commitment to learning more about your field, whether you work in finance or global development and innovation. A graduate certificate also demonstrates your readiness to move up the ladder at work. Read on to learn more.

What Is a Graduate Certificate?

Graduate certificates allow you to advance a specific area of your education at the graduate level. This pathway is quicker and more affordable than a traditional graduate program.

Depending on the program, a graduate certificate might consist of introductory courses, core courses or a mixture of both. For example, Penn State ’s online project management graduate certificate requires only one introductory course, plus three electives of your choice.

However, the classes you take for a graduate certificate are just as rigorous as those you’d take for a full degree—this is still graduate school.

In fact, graduate certificates are a great way to determine whether you are ready to work on a graduate degree. They can give you a taste of graduate-level courses, and many programs, such as the University of Florida ’s online graduate certificate in social media, allow you to transfer the credits earned for your graduate certificate to a related master’s degree .

You should note two important factors when considering a graduate certificate:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required for admission to a graduate certificate program at an accredited university.
  • Graduate certificate students do not qualify for federal student aid.

What Can You Do With a Graduate Certificate?

A graduate certificate can be likened to an official career development badge. When you list a graduate certificate on your résumé, you show that you are so committed to honing your skills, you went back to school after earning a bachelor’s degree to learn more. A grad certificate can help support your bid for a promotion or salary bump at work.

Regardless of when in your career you earn a graduate certificate, this credential indicates your dedication to improving your skills and staying up to date with the latest developments in your field.

For example, let’s say you started an agriculture career 20 years ago, when cannabis was nowhere near legal. Now that it is, you may not have the time to go back to school for a full graduate degree—but earning an online graduate certificate in cannabis production and management from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign may show your boss that you can handle the opening of a new revenue stream for your company.

Benefits of a Graduate Certificate

Benefit 1: gain specialized knowledge.

Graduate certificates are hyper-focused on a core area of knowledge. Whether it’s a certificate in fundraising with courses on nonprofit resource development or a certificate in bioinformatics with courses in relational database systems, graduate certificates cut to the chase by focusing on the essentials.

Benefit 2: Advance Your Career

In addition to possibly boosting your earning potential, listing a graduate certificate on your résumé can help you stand out against other candidates who only have bachelor’s degrees. The specialized nature of a graduate certificate may also give you the skills to focus on a particular area of interest at work.

Benefit 3: Stay Current and Grow Your Network

Earning a graduate certificate is a form of continuing education that allows you to enhance your skills by studying the latest research and trends in your field. As an added bonus, going back to school gives you the chance to expand your professional network when you meet new professors and classmates.

Benefit 4: Prepare For a Master’s Degree

A graduate certificate is a great way to test the waters of a master’s degree or even a doctorate. Because you can often transfer courses from a graduate certificate to a correlated master’s program, the academic rigor of each class is the same.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Graduate Certificates

Is a graduate certificate the same as a master's degree.

No. A master’s degree requires more time and more courses than a graduate certificate. However, a graduate certificate demonstrates that you have studied your area at the level of a graduate student after having earned a bachelor’s degree.

Is it worth getting a graduate certificate?

If you know you don’t have the time or money for a graduate degree, but you still want to advance your knowledge in a specific field at the graduate level, a graduate certificate may be the perfect option for you. However, you should first consider whether you can afford the tuition, as you may not qualify for federal student aid as a graduate certificate student.

What is the difference between a graduate certificate and an undergraduate certificate?

An undergraduate certificate focuses more on entry-level skills, while a graduate certificate focuses on advancing the skills you have already acquired. Additionally, you need to have an undergraduate degree before gaining admission to a graduate certificate program.

Is a graduate certificate the same as a professional certificate?

No. Graduate certificates are offered by academic institutions. Professional certificates are usually offered by professional and industry organizations.

Program Offerings

Graduate students at Princeton may pursue a number of interdepartmental and joint degree programs once enrolled as a Princeton graduate student. This includes certificate programs in select fields. This wide range of interdisciplinary opportunities complements and enriches our degree-granting programs, while promoting intellectual inquiry and research across departmental and divisional boundaries.

Departments and Programs

Associated admission and degree requirements for each of Princeton’s 43 degree-granting departments and programs can be found within the Fields of Study listings. All graduate students enter through one of these programs.

Joint Degrees

Princeton's Graduate School offers four full joint-degree programs:

Interdisciplinary Humanities

Social Policy

Neuroscience

Materials Science

Established joint degree programs allow participating students to earn a Ph.D. within a recognized discipline, but with a substantial research component of a related discipline.  Students apply to a participating home department, and are usually accepted to a joint degree program after admission and enrollment. Students who successfully pursue a joint degree will receive a Ph.D. from their home department and from the affiliated program. Joint degree programs have their own listing within Fields of Study .

Dual Degree Programs

Princeton also participates in two established joint-degree programs with other institutions.  Information about these can be found in the Fields of Study listings for:

The Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (M.P.A.-J.D. & M.P.A.-M.B.A. programs)

The Department of Molecular Biology (for the M.D-Ph.D. program)

Individual agreements or arrangements outside of these formal programs may also be possible with the support of a student's department and the Graduate School.

Graduate Certificates

Graduate certificate programs allow graduate students to develop a secondary area of expertise and require work that is in addition to a student's normal degree requirements.  Such additional work may include:

Language study and acquisition

Course work

Participation in special workshops or colloquia

Research activity (for Ph.D. students, this additional research activity often involves significant additional content or methods for the general examination and/or the doctoral dissertation).

Students are not admitted to the University via certificate programs; only graduate students already admitted to degree programs at Princeton may be eligible to pursue certificates. Certificate programs are listed within Fields of Study , either as their own entry or, in cases where it is sponsored directly by a degree-granting department, within the sponsoring department's entry. Entries for programs that have been approved by the Graduate School and the University to appear on a student's transcript are indicated. Such certificates are recorded on the transcript at the same time the degree is awarded.

Students may pursue and earn one recorded certificate for each graduate degree awarded. In no case should degree progress be slowed or altered because of work on a certificate.

Graduate School

Doctoral certificates.

  • Academics & Research
  • Distinctive Opportunities

Doctoral certificate programs are open to enrolled PhD students. These programs are designed to extend expertise into interdisciplinary areas and to certify training beyond the home Ph.D. discipline. They promise to advance student careers as well as promote intellectual exchange and community in these academic areas.

To pursue a certificate program, a student must have the support of the department in which they are pursuing the doctoral degree and the program offering the certificate. Certificates typically require three to five courses and sometimes require a substantial piece of written work, internship, practicum, or other project. The programs are offered at no charge to eligible doctoral students.

Successful completion of the requirements of the certificate program will be recognized on the Brown University transcript with a notation indicating the field of this advanced study. Although approved programs may be informally described as “certificates,” no separate document will be awarded by the Registrar.

What is a Graduate Certificate and What Are Its Benefits?

A woman working on her online graduate certificate courses from her laptop

Understanding the Numbers When reviewing job growth and salary information, it’s important to remember that actual numbers can vary due to many different factors — like years of experience in the role, industry of employment, geographic location, worker skill and economic conditions. Cited projections do not guarantee actual salary or job growth.

A graduate certificate is a credential that equips you with foundational knowledge and skills in a particular field. Although it doesn't replace a master's degree, it can still prove competence in an area and be featured on your resume.

Campus and online certificate programs are geared toward those who wish to advance their skills to remain competitive in the workforce, according to Christina Dumeng , an associate dean of the functional and academic effectiveness team at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).

Anyone with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree can apply for a graduate certificate program. Whether you’d like to delve deeper into your current field or learn about something new, there's a broad range of programs to choose from. Some include:

  • Athletic Administration Graduate Certificate
  • Dyslexia Graduate Certificate
  • Finance Graduate Certificate
  • Forensic Accounting Graduate Certificate
  • Nonprofit Management Graduate Certificate
  • Project Management Graduate Certificate
  • Social Media Graduate Certificate

Clare Greenlaw with the text Clare Greenlaw

More employers are covering the cost of certificates now, too, because they reap benefits for the workplace, according to Greenlaw.

"A certificate is often experiential learning , and it covers theory, but it moves quickly from academic study to application and use," Greenlaw said. "So, you’re very hands-on, and employers appreciate that because they’re assuming when you come out, it will be an immediately useful skill set for them."

4 Benefits of a Graduate Certificate

If you want the ability to stay relevant in your field, validate your skill set, earn professional development or sample the courseload of a master's degree program , then you may benefit from completing a graduate certificate. You can even transfer the credits you earn  from your graduate certificate program toward a master's degree.

Adapt to Change

According to a report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), some of the most in-demand jobs today did not exist 10-15 years ago ( WEF 2016 PDF source ). Another WEF report confirmed that the pace of change has only accelerated ( WEF 2018 PDF source ).

With a graduate certificate, you can gain up-to-date expertise and get an edge on the competition, even if it’s been years since you earned your degree. This could be especially beneficial to keep up with industries that are constantly evolving, such as technology.

Validate Your Skill Set

Based on a 2022 Bureau of Labor Statistics ( BLS ) Employee Tenure Summary, workers have been with their current employer for a median of 4.1 years. This means it's likely you will work in a number of roles throughout your career. While your work experience may propel you forward, a graduate certificate will give you a credential.

Christina Dumeng with the text Christina Dumeng

One solution is to earn a graduate certificate, especially if you are interested in pursuing a master's degree later. And you may be able to transfer credits from your graduate certificate program into your master's degree program to help shorten the time needed to complete your degree.

BLS reported that there were 10.7 million job openings at the end of September 2022, and a skill gap may contribute to that growing number. Jobs are continuing to change, and there is a perceived barrier when it comes to workers adapting to new technologies. According to a 2020 WEF survey, 55.4% of companies believe there is a skill gap in the local labor market ( WEF 2020 PDF source ).

Dumeng said enrolling in a graduate certificate program is a way to develop the skills employers are seeking. “They are hands-on, they’re immediate and (they) can help to bridge that gap,” she said.

Demonstrate Professional Development

Even if you’re satisfied in your current role, enrolling in a certificate program is a form of professional development that may just be the boost you need for a promotion or raise.

“It does signal your readiness for promotion," Greenlaw said. "You’re demonstrating an additional grit and an additional interest in furthering your own capabilities, which will result in your employer’s benefit.”

Jumpstart Your Master's Degree

If you enroll in a graduate certificate program, you will often find yourself in the same courses as those pursuing a master's degree, completing the same tasks and objectives. Because of this, many of the credits are transferable, and you may use a certificate program as a stepping stone to a full-fledged master's degree.

Earning a certificate first may give you the confidence to pursue a degree and allow you to explore program options if you're not quite sure where you'd like to focus your graduate studies.

Sometimes, colleges will even bundle a certificate with a master’s degree program, and graduates will leave school with two new credentials. That's what happened when Dumeng pursued her master's in organizational leadership . Some of the required courses and electives she took amounted to a human resources management certificate . Now, she can boast both credentials on her resume.

Is a Graduate Certificate the Same as a Graduate Degree?

Although the two graduate programs share rigorous course loads, there are several differences between graduate degrees and certificates , including time, cost and skills.

A graduate certificate can be earned in less time than it would take to earn a master's degree, allowing you to move quickly from theory to application. They typically range from 12-21 credits and can be finished in as soon as four or five months, depending on the certificate program. Master’s degree programs often require 36 credits or more and typically take two years to complete .

Since a certificate program takes less time to complete, it’s also more affordable and more accessible to pay out of pocket than a master’s program. While federal financial aid  generally does not cover the cost of a certificate, employers sometimes will.

Learners who complete a certificate can expect to become equipped with concrete skills in a particular field, while those who earn a master’s degree can demonstrate mastery.

“A graduate certificate does carry less weight than a full graduate degree and therefore would be considered a lesser credential comparatively,” Dumeng said. “However, both a graduate certificate and a graduate degree have a place in the workforce and are used for professional growth.”

Certificate in Formation of Knowledge

How do we know what we know? What makes expertise? What can we gain in the 21st century by exploring the contexts of knowledge production, past and present? Housed at the Institute on the Formation of Knowledge (IFK), the Formation of Knowledge MAPSS certificate explores how claims to knowledge are shaped by disciplinary, social, historical, and political contexts, as well as local cultural factors both explicit and unspoken. Students in the Formation of Knowledge MAPSS certificate are introduced to the nascent and dynamic field of inquiry into the formation of knowledge through a broad range of historical, sociological, and anthropological case studies that exemplify and challenge disciplinary practices in the social sciences. In addition to traditional social science research, the certificate highlights experiential learning, collaboration, and opportunities guided by a faculty advisor.

Certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies

Eligibility : Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences, Divinity School master’s programs, any doctoral program.

The  Certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies allows students in a variety of programs to deepen their academic interest in gender and/or sexuality. These opportunities allow students to gain an understanding of the breadth of subjects where gender/sexuality can be, and are, a focus of study. Requirements differ depending on the degree you are pursuing.

Interested students should review certificate requirements carefully on the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality website .

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University's principal research degree for graduate students and is available in all faculties and departments.

A Cambridge PhD is intellectually demanding and you will need to have a high level of attainment and motivation to pursue this programme of advanced study and research.

In most faculties, a candidate is expected to have completed one year of postgraduate study, normally on a research preparation master's course, prior to starting a PhD.

Completion normally requires three or four years of full-time study, or at least five years of part-time study, including a probationary period.

Terms of research are normally consecutive and, for full-time students, require residency in Cambridge. Not all departments offer part-time research degrees.

Various routes to the PhD are possible and, if you are made an offer of admission, it will be made clear whether you are required to study for a master's degree or certificate in the first instance, or will be admitted directly to the probationary year for the PhD. You are registered for the PhD only after a satisfactory progress assessment at the end of the probationary year (five terms for part-time degrees). The assessment is designed also to focus your mind on the stages necessary for the completion of your research within the normal time limit and to address any structural problems that have arisen during the first year. Students must pass the first year assessment in order to continue their PhD study.

During your PhD, your effort will be focused on writing a dissertation. The word count of the dissertation is dependent on the department and the Student Registry or Educational Student Policy will be able to tell you the maximum word limit. This must represent a significant contribution to learning, for example through the discovery of new knowledge, the connection of previously unrelated facts, the development of a new theory, or the revision of older views, and must take account of previously published work on the subject. Some Cambridge dissertations go on to form the basis of significant publications.

Although you will spend long hours working independently, your department and College will both support you throughout your PhD. You are also able to attend regular seminars in your subject area and could be involved in teaching, perhaps giving seminars or supervising, or in the social life of your department and College.

The basic graduate degrees are the Master of Arts, Master of Science, the Doctor of Philosophy and the professional doctoral degree.

The Master of Arts degree is normally given for study in the humanities and social sciences. The Master of Science degree is normally given for study in the natural sciences and engineering. Other master’s degrees are granted by USC for proficiency in professional fields. Master’s degree programs are subject to the policies of the Graduate School.

All Doctor of Philosophy degrees must meet the standards of scholarship and other regulations established by the Graduate School. With the exception of Doctor of Dental Surgery, Juris Doctor and Doctor of Medicine, all professional doctoral programs are subject to the policies of the Graduate School.

In addition, the university also offers a number of graduate certificate programs. Graduate credit certificate programs must be approved by the University Committee on Curriculum and meet the following requirements: (1) a minimum of 12 units is required; the maximum number of units may vary; (2) for certificate programs of 16 units or fewer, all course work must be at the 500 level or above. For programs of more than 16 units, not more than 25 percent of the total units for the program may be at the 400 level; (3) for completion, a minimum cumulative USC grade point average of 3.0 must be achieved on all course work applied to the certificate; (4) all course work must be earned at USC, except for programs of more than 16 units, in which case not more than 25 percent of the course work may be transfer credit.

An Area of Emphasis is a specific focus within a major that has been formally approved. Areas of Emphasis are listed within parentheses following the appropriate majors and do not appear on diplomas but are indicated on transcripts.

A dual degree program joins two distinct graduate degree programs under a single, new program and POST (program of study) code. (Applicants to dual degree programs must apply separately to each degree and be admitted to both programs. After admission to both degree programs, the student is assigned the single, dual degree POST code.) Upon completion of the dual degree program, two degrees (and two diplomas) are awarded. Both degrees in a dual degree program must be awarded with the same conferral date.

A progressive degree program enables a USC undergraduate to begin work on a master’s degree while completing requirements for the bachelor’s degree. The degree may be in the same or different departments but should be in a similar field of study. Students in a progressive degree program must fulfill all requirements for both the bachelor’s degree and the master’s degree except for the combined total number of units for the degrees. The master’s degree may be awarded simultaneously with but not before the bachelor’s degree is awarded.

The university does not distinguish online programs and courses from those offered on campus. Requests to provide information about which programs and courses are offered online will be denied.

Certificates are not awarded automatically upon completion of all scholastic requirements. To be considered as a candidate for a certificate:

Applications should be filed during the publicized graduation filing period as listed in the Academic Calendar. A non-refundable application fee will be assessed for each certificate application filed during the regular graduation filing period. There will be an additional non-refundable application fee assessed for each graduation application filed during the late graduation application period.

Candidates for certification who have missed the final deadline for late filing of application must petition with their college. If such request is approved by the college, students will be assessed the non-refundable late application fee.

A student, who has been disapproved for their certificate, must submit a new application in a future term that they expect to meet the requirements to be considered for certificate completion. Each subsequent application submitted will be assessed the appropriate application fee according to the filing period during which the application is submitted.

Certification of certificate completion is performed by the dean’s office of the student’s college and a decision of approved or disapproved is rendered within 3 weeks after the close of the term. Certificates are typically mailed within 1-2 weeks from the time the approvals for graduation are processed.

More than 150 at-risk students graduate with GEDs, technical certificates in Tallahassee

The city’s tempo program is targeted toward at-risk 16 to 24-year-olds who are out of school and out of work.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Members of the TEMPO class of 2024 received their diplomas Thursday night.

This year’s class, with 89 students graduating with a GED and 69 graduating with technical certificates, was the organization’s largest. The program is targeted toward at-risk 16 to 24-year-olds who are out of school and out of work.

One grad, Infiniti Wesley, first heard about TEMPO in 2017. She was sitting at a bus stop, skipping school, when Kimball Thomas, the city’s director of housing and community resilience, asked if she wanted to get back into the classroom.

Eventually, Wesley took Thomas up on his offer and signed up for TEMPO. She ended up dropping out and rejoining the program four times. During that time, she became pregnant with her daughter, who is now 3 years old.

Still, she didn’t give up. On her fifth time signing up for the program, she saw it through to the end. Thursday, she turned her tassel, with her daughter by her side, and stood up at the podium to give a speech to her classmates.

“There’s a lot of distractions in this world, but never give up,” Wesley said. “Never, never, never, never. It took me 6 years and I still did it.”

More Tallahassee news:

As Wesley was working to earn her degree, her friend Destiny Brown drove her to school each morning.

“Even if I didn’t go to school, I made sure she went to school,” Brown said.

When Brown saw her friend walk across the stage Thursday, she could hardly contain her excitement.

“Butterflies,” she said, describing the moment. “I was just like ‘She did it. We did it!’”

It’s stories like these that make Thomas so proud to run this program.

“It’s been one of the best things that’s ever happened to me in my life, in my professional career,” he said. “To watch a young person who needed hope, who had given up, and all of a sudden this program has brought them hope.”

TEMPO began in 2017, with just 12 students. Since then, it’s changed the lives of more than 500 students.

Thomas hopes it continues to grow year after year.
