Who defines islam critical perspectives on islamic studies, 1. introduction.

In Germany, an epistemic community within the study of Islam trans- formed from a low institutionalized network of Muslim scholars into an autonomous aca- demic discipline that combines epistemic and social insiderism in its studies: Islamic Theology. In the US, the epistemic community works as a network of scholars based mainly on an epistemic-normative research framework within the existing structure of disciplines dealing with Islam—primarily Islamic Studies. This different institutional development shows that science systems may react in various ways to the emergence of insiderism within the study of Islam, by either establishing a separate discipline or allowing insiderism to take place within the existing disciplines. ( Engelhardt 2016, pp. 740–41 )

2. Who Defines Islam?: A Question of Religious and Epistemic Authority

2.1. texts and caretakers, 2.2. western researchers and universities between politics and identity.

The last 20 years has seen chairs, programs, and centers established in Islamic Studies, quite a few with funding from Muslim rulers and organizations. This funding has raised the question, in Britain, Germany, the United States of America, and Australia—are strings attached that might compromise academic integrity? Britain’s Centre for Social Cohesion published a report in 2009 called A Degree of Influence on the funding of “strategically important subjects in British universities,” which focuses on Islamic Studies. Government interest in the subject or field of Islamic Studies, alongside A Degree of Influence, suggests that Islamic Studies cannot be pursued in isolation from politics, actual or perceived national interests, culture war, even from how the media covers Islam. ( Bennett 2013, pp. 4–5 )
This redefinition of Islamic studies and what gets to count (or not count) as valid scholarship creates real epistemological problems. What role, for example, do non-Muslims or even Muslims who are interested in historical and critical scholarship have to play in this new Islamic studies? Islamic Religious Studies, to reiterate, risks becoming a form of liberal Muslim theology...this “progressive” identity is something that is manufactured by scholars of Islamic Religious Studies. And that is precisely what they do: seek one another out, read each other’s works, write blurbs for each other’s books, and invite one another to their conferences, where religious studies and overt (not even crypto-) theology intermingle. ( Hughes 2012, p. 112 )

3. Islamic Studies: A Diversity of Models and Approaches

3.1. models of islamic studies in europe, 3.2. approaches to islamic studies, 4. the need for multiple critiques, 4.1. practices of critique, 4.2. islamic studies between power, hegemonic epistemology, and competence, 4.3. from self-criticism to multiple critiques, 5. conclusions, institutional review board statement, informed consent statement, data availability statement, conflicts of interest.

  • Open Access Theses & Dissertations The number of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) openly available via institutional repositories has grown dramatically in recent years, increasing the need for a centralized service to search for this unique material. Open Access Theses and Dissertations (OATD), launched in early 2013, is on the path to fulfill that need. Not as large as the commercial subscription service ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Database, OATD distinguishes itself by providing access to more than 1.6 million open-access theses and dissertations freely available from over 800 institutions worldwide. The simplified interface allows searching across all fields or, in advanced search, by specific field (Title, Author Name, Abstract, University/Publisher, or Subject/Keywords). In addition, users may limit searches to a specific language or date range. Search results may be sorted by relevance, author, university, or date. more... less... Depending on the search, results may be further limited by date, university, department, degree, level (e.g., doctoral vs. master's), or language. The number of hits for entries under each limit is conveniently displayed in the left column. Links to the full text residing on the home institution's site are provided for each record. In many instances, several pages of the thesis or dissertation are available for viewing. Though other sites cover similar material, e.g., PQDT Open http://pqdtopen.proquest.com and Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, OATD focuses exclusively on open-access ETDs, and serves as an excellent resource for students and researchers. Its usefulness will continue to increase as more ETDs are made freely available

Essential Readings on Political Islam (by Peter Mandaville)

As befits a topic that is global in scope, increasingly controversial in nature, and the focus of academic inquiry for more than half a century, the literature on political Islam is voluminous. The readings presented here represent some of the most important efforts to study contemporary Islamism using the tools, methodologies, and academic rigor associated with the humanities and social sciences. Though hardly exhaustive, this list will provide the reader with a sense of how the study of political Islam—in major publications either written or available in English—as an object of academic inquiry has evolved over the years.

This article examines how the Qur'an transforms self, family and society; discusses oppression of oneself and others; and demonstrates how the problems it causes can be prevented by constant self-awareness and self-accountability. In addition, it addresses various issues including the Qur'an's view of oppression's spiritual roots, the origin of human relations, and taqwā's relationship with selfdevelopment. In addition, and most importantly, it identifies the oppressor and the oppressed; explains how oppressors can transform themselves; why God holds people accountable; and how to evaluate our strategies' success or failure in dealing with oppression. The methodology used is that of reading the Qurʾan intra-textually as one structural unity (al-waḥda al-binā'iyya li-l-Qur'ān). This involves cross-examining and integrating the sacred text's linguistic, structural, and conceptual elements. The overarching goal of this approach is to prevent injustice and promote peace through justice, mercy, and mutual accountability.
