Imagining the future, while exciting, can be an arduous task. Even just trying to look ten years ahead is challenging for me.

There seems to be a disconnect between reality and an imagined future. It almost feels like an out-of-body experience to look at ourselves in another season of life that we have yet to experience. Technologies and trends are different. Customs and attitudes are also different. Even physical appearances are different. Dreaming about life years from now feels like taking a trip to a country you’ve never visited. Everything is unfamiliar.

Despite this obvious departure from reality into wishful thinking, dreaming of the future sure is an exciting experience. To imagine me after a decade only provides a semblance of what the future holds for me. But what really matters is the countless possibilities the future holds. This is what I want to keep my eyes on. It should be where we anchor our goals so that we will work hard towards attaining them later on.

With that said, in ten years’ time, I see myself working at a company that offers an exciting environment to thrive in. I would be part of a brilliant creative team in the advertising industry, where my creativity will be allowed to flourish unhindered. I would be working as a productive member of the team, who is able to work well with others in translating drawings into the profitable design.

In a decade, I will have saved enough money to start my own business. I’m not sure about what I would be selling, but I am certain at this point that I would offer things that are practical and functional. Ultimately, my goal is to attain a certain level of wealth. The goal of shifting to entrepreneurship will be to sustain my family and guarantee a steady income that can make them happy and satisfied.

In a decade, I would like to start a family. I want to have two kids and a house where they can grow up healthy and smart. It will not be a big house, but it shall be a simple place where we can eat together, have meaningful conversations, and lead happy normal lives. While my partner and I will be dedicated to the success of our jobs and businesses, we will prioritize our family above everything else. After all, the reason for our working hard is to provide our children with better education, good food, and a comfortable place where they are fully nurtured and cared for.

In ten years’ time, I will be pursuing the hobbies that I’ve liked since I was a child. I know for one thing that work can be hectic, stressful, and downright tiring. Yes, getting the answer right can be a little tricky. However, by using the correct strategy, it gets much easier. If you want to have a stand-out answer for the interview classic, where do you see yourself in 10 years, here’s what you need to know.

The 10-Year Period vs. the 5-Year Period

Okay, before we dive into how to answer this question, let’s take a second and talk about the highly similar one – “ Where do you see yourself in five years? ” – and how the two compare.

While the two questions have a lot in common, how you answer them isn’t the same. Yes, you’re talking about the future in both cases. But the thing is, 10 years is a lot further away.

Think about it this way; ten years ago, the first Tesla Model S made it into a customer’s hands. The iPad was only two years old, and people were still wondering about the future of touch computing . Siri was also new, launching in late 2011.

Ultimately, a lot of change can happen in five years. But compare it to 10 years, and it seems like nothing.

Over 10 years, most professionals mature and grow a lot in their careers. You can go from entry-level to management in that time frame in many fields. That kind of development just isn’t common in half that time.

While ensuring you have the right hard and soft skills is part of the equation, they also want to assess your potential for longevity. If your long-term career goals don’t mesh with the company, they’ll likely assume you won’t stick around for long. Since retention is critical in their eyes, that makes you a less desirable candidate.

However, if your vision for the future could easily play out while working for them, the opposite is true. They’ll view you as a stronger candidate because your goals align. Essentially, you’ll look like a better investment.

• Research shows that viewing your future self as a different person than you are now can aid decision-making.

As people, it's easier to look back and see changes in ourselves than it is to look forward and project changes. In psychology, this concept is known as the end-of-history illusion.

It's a simple idea, really. If you were to look back 10 years and examine all the ways in which you're different from your former self, you'd be able to come up with a lengthy list of all the ways you've changed, in both big ways and small ones.

Take, for example, the way you make decisions, or even the decisions you see as desirable. Chances are, you have different mental models and values and principles guiding the decisions you make than your former self did 10 years ago. But what about smaller things, like the kinds of people you're surrounded by, or your favorite foods and types of music?

Dr. Daniel Gilbert, a Harvard psychologist, has found that when people are given time to reflect, they can see massive differences between their current and former selves. However, when asked to project forward 10 years, consistently, people of all ages predict only small changes between their current and future selves. As Gilbert explains in a 2014 mainstage TED Talk:

At every age, people underestimate how much their personalities will change in the next decade. And it isn’t just ephemeral things like values and personality . You can ask people about their likes and dislikes, their basic preferences. For example, name your best friend, your favorite kind of vacation, what’s your favorite hobby, what’s your favorite kind of music... To give you an idea of the magnitude of this effect... 18-year-olds anticipate changing only as much as 50-year-olds actually do... Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they’re finished.

Gilbert explained a core reason for this is likely “the ease of remembering and the difficulty of imagining.” As he continues,

Most of us can remember who we were 10 years ago, but we find it hard to imagine who we’re going to be, and then we mistakenly think that because it’s hard to imagine, it’s not likely to happen. Sorry, when people say, "I can’t imagine that," they’re usually talking about their own lack of imagination , and not about the unlikelihood of the event that they’re describing.

Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset

Interestingly, the popular research by Stanford psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck seems relevant here. In her research, she distinguished the " growth mindset " from the "fixed mindset." A growth mindset, according to Dweck, is the belief that your characteristics, abilities, and personality are flexible and can change. The fixed mindset, conversely, is the belief that your characteristics, abilities, and personality are fixed and unchangeable.

Dweck explains that those with a fixed mindset are more interested in proving their capability and talent, whereas those with a growth mindset are more interested in learning. To use Dr. Brené Brown's language, those with a fixed mindset attempt to "be right," while those with a growth mindset attempt to "get it right."

When you're trying to "be right," you're seeking to prove your current perspective and position. When you're seeking to "get it right," you know that your current perspectives and positions will change as you get new and better information.

Connecting this back to Gilbert's research: It seems that people often get stuck in a fixed mindset, in which they've overly identified as their current selves and incorrectly assume that who they are now is who they will always be. They lack the imagination that they can and will change in big and small ways in the coming years and decades.

Also, considering the social and political landscape, it can seem that people are often more interested in "being right" than "getting it right." This is why Dr. Adam Grant's recent book, Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know, is so relevant. Grant describes an idea he calls, "The joy of being wrong," which encourages embracing new perspectives and continually evolving our thinking.

Pulling this together, it's helpful to recognize that you're not the exact same person you were in the past. Similarly, it's also helpful to realize that your future self will also be a different person than who you currently are. In fact, research shows that viewing your future self as a different person than you are now is helpful for decision-making . It enables you to have empathy for your future self, strive to understand what matters to them , and utilize that perspective to make better decisions here and now.

By knowing that your future self will be a different person, you can tap into a growth mindset in which you embrace the joy of being wrong. Rather than trying to prove your current self, you know that your current self is "transitory and fleeting," to use Gilbert's language. Even tomorrow, you'll be somewhat different than you are today.

This liberating perspective also enables us to have empathy toward other people. Rather than overly judging someone based on who they were in the past, or even on who they are today, we can recognize that they, too, have the capacity for change.

Many college interviewers will ask applicants about their long-term goals. You don't need to know what you want to do with your life to answer this question, but be sure to be prepared to answer a question about life after college .

"What Do You See Yourself Doing 10 Years from Now?"

This common interview question can come in many flavors: What do you want to do with your life? What are your goals? What is your dream job? What do you want to do with your college degree? What are your future plans?

However your interviewer phrases the question, the goal is similar. The college admissions folks want to see if you have thought about your future. A lot of students don't succeed in college for the simple reason that they don't have a clear sense of why college is important to them and their goals. This interview question is subtly asking you to show how college fits into your long-term planning.

Realize that you definitely do not need to know what you want to be doing 10 years from now. College is a time of exploration and discovery. Many prospective college students have not yet been introduced to the fields that will define their future careers. The majority of students will change majors before they graduate. Many students will have careers that aren't directly connected to their undergraduate majors .

Weak Interview Question Responses

That said, you don't want to evade the question. Answers such as these may be accurate, but they won't impress anybody:

• "I don't know." True enough, but keep on reading to see a better way to present your uncertainty.
• "I'm not sure what I'll be doing, but I want to be making lots of money." This answer suggests that you have no academic interests, but you have strong materialistic desires. Such attitudes aren't very attractive to a college that is trying to enroll an interesting and engaged group of students.
• "I want to be working for a big company." Try to focus more. What type of company? Why? A vague answer isn't going to create a strong impression.
• "I hope I'll be married with kids." That's fine, but the interviewer isn't really asking about your personal life (in fact, it wouldn't be appropriate for an interviewer to ask about your future plans for family and marriage). Keep focused on career goals that are connected to your college education.

Strong Interview Question Answers

If asked about your future goals , be honest but also answer in a way that shows you have actually thought about the relationship between college and your future. Here are a couple ways to approach the question:

• "I want to major in aeronautical engineering and work for NASA." If you know what you want to do, an interview question about your future is easy to answer. However, be sure to elaborate and explain why you want to pursue a certain career path. What got you interested in the field? What do you hope to accomplish in this career?
• "I don't know what I will be doing, but I know I want to help people with their problems. In college, I'm interested in taking classes in sociology and psychology to learn what some of the options are." An answer such as this shows your uncertainty, but it shows that you know yourself, you've thought about the future, and you are eager to explore new fields of study.

Again, the interviewer is not expecting you to know what you will be doing in 10 years. If you can see yourself in five different careers, say so. You will have successfully answered this question if you do more than shrug your shoulders or evade the question. Show that you are excited about the future and that college plays a role in it.

To have confidence when you walk into your interview, be sure you prepare for the most common interview questions , and be careful to avoid common interview mistakes .

Keep in mind that college interviews are typically friendly events and that your interviewer wants to get to know you, not stump you or make you feel stupid. In ten years, my life is going to be completely different and exactly the same. I am still going to be me: a walking paradox--someone who is shy and outgoing, quiet and loud, caring and indifferent, empowered and unmotivated, and empathetic and apathetic. I am still going to be the person that I am, no matter what, but I’ll be better at it. I’ll be better at being me. Things are going to change--who I’m with, what I’m doing, where I am--but I never will. I’m excited for the exterior change that is about to unfold around me in the upcoming ten years. Through college, jobs, new people, new environments, and new experiences, I’ll be able to grow as a person.

One of the most important aspects of my life is my family. Through thick and thin, they’ve had my back and I’ve had theirs and nothing will ever be able to change that. In ten years, however, I won’t be living with them anymore. I’ll be on my own, hopefully planning to start a family of my own sometime in the near future of that distant one. I hope the bonds I currently have with my family will continue to strengthen. In ten years, we may not be physically near each other, but we’ll still always be around. The best part about family is that they don’t have to consist strictly of just my blood relatives. My friends are just as much family to me as my brother or mom. I hope that in ten years, I’ll still be friends with most, if not all of the people that I’m close to today. I hope that I’ll be able to hear their kids call me “Aunt” and that we’ll visit each other as often as we possibly can. In ten years, I’ll have made new friends through college and at my future job, and they’ll be family to me just as much as those aforementioned. I want my family to play as big a role in my life as possible without stripping me of my independence.

My future job. God, that seems so far away. But, college only lasts four years and I’ll hopefully be done with more than one novel by then and have at least one published. Being an author has been a lifelong dream of mine. I want to look back ten years from now to nine years ago from today and think of how proud my ten-year-old-self would be of my twenty-nine-year-old-self. I want to make enough money that I can live comfortably, if not a little bit luxuriously, and I want to provide my family, present and future, with everything that they could possibly want or need. I want my job to take me to all kinds of new places. I want to take part in book signings and book readings. I want my work to have touched the lives of others. I want to inspire others. I want to have an impact and effect on people I haven’t even met before.

Living in luxury would be nice but it isn’t totally necessary. My environment will obviously have an effect on everything the next ten years will bring, and I want to be able to soak up the beauty all around me. Ten years from now, I want to have traveled to places all over the world. I want to be able to say I’ve been here or there, but still be able to come back home to a roof over my head and my family by my side. I want a box full of memories from Rome or Prague or Tokyo or London or wherever else. I want it to be full of pictures and memorabilia from all of the places I’ve been. I want the world to be my environment. But, what I also want, is a home; I want a familiar place I can always come back to, a place full of memories and opportunities just as every place else is. Not only do I want my world to be my environment, but I also want my home to be my environment.

I guess I didn’t realize it when I started writing this, but everything I want my life to be in ten years ties together; my family, my job, my environment. There are things I want to change and there are things that I could never imagine being different. I hope my life in ten years is even better than I picture it in my head. I hope my life consists of everything I could ever hope for. But, most importantly, I hope I’m still the same person I am now, just better.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.
