Don't worry, Bluey isn't ending but Sunday's special episode is going to be a big one. Here's what to expect
Bluey fans are being treated to an extra-long special episode on Sunday morning.
It comes after a cliffhanger of an episode last week, which has some fans anxious about what could happen.
But while the show is broadcast on the ABC, we here in the ABC newsroom are as much in the dark about the show as everyone else.
So we spoke to Bluey executive producer Daley Pearson to get some answers.
When is the Bluey special?
8am AEST Sunday.
Where can I watch the Bluey special?
You can stream it on ABC iview .
It'll also be broadcast on free-to-air TV on ABC Kids/ABC TV Plus.
Is Bluey ending?
Don't worry, we've double-confirmed that with an ABC spokesperson.
"We have no plans to end the show," they said.
Mr Pearson spoke about big plans for Bluey — more on that later.
Why do people think Bluey is ending?
They might be a bit spooked after the last episode, called Ghostbasket, dropped last week (if you've not seen it yet, prepare yourself for spoilers below).
And because this came before an extra-long special, some fans feared it was gearing people up for a final episode.
But that's not the case.
Mr Pearson says Sunday's special was something of a trial run to see how fans respond to a longer episode.
What was Ghostbasket about?
It started off with Bandit pretending to be a "house-selling person" showing the Heeler house to Chilli, a prospective buyer.
Bluey and Bingo were in character as grannies Rita and Janet, who didn't want to sell the house and pretended it was haunted.
It all looked like another one of the family's make-believe games, but the final seconds of the episode revealed that it wasn't exactly all pretend, with a "for sale" sign out the front of the house.
It was also the first-ever Bluey episode without any music in the end credits
Instead, there were a few gentle piano notes as the words "to be continued…" came up on the screen.
This poignant ending prompted emotional reactions from some viewers.
Here's a collection of Instagram comments:
"THEY’RE SELLING THE HEELER HOUSE????"
"This move is gonna be harder for me than it is for them.
"The episode made me laugh until the ending which caught me off guard. I still can't believe that the Heelers are moving."
What do we know about the Bluey special?
It's called The Sign and Mr Pearson hinted that it could be a tear-jerker.
"It's the most beautiful episode we've made," he said.
"It's taken people by surprise and got through a chink in their armour."
Being four times longer than a regular episode, it was a big effort from everyone at Ludo Studios — the Brisbane animation company that makes the show.
"We had a crew screening where everyone cried … but we're not sure if that was just because they were relieved," Mr Pearson said.
"It was a very emotional experience for everybody."
It's going to have a bunch of new characters, including Rove McManus, Deborah Mailman, Brendan Williams and Joel Edgerton.
And some fan favourites will be back, including Patrick Brammall as Uncle Rad, Megan Washington as Calypso, Claudia O'Doherty as Frisky, Myf Warhurst as Trixie and Rose Byrne as Brandy.
Here's the trailer for it:
As well as a trailer, the studio also put up a fake real estate online listing for the house, which is described as a "quaint, animated family home nestled in an undisclosed Brisbane location, that could be in Red Hill or The Gap (we'll never tell)".
The agent is listed as Bucky Dunstan, who is apparently very busy selling houses because calls to his number go directly to voicemail.
The last line on the description seems to hint about what's to come in The Sign.
"This is an exciting opportunity for all families around the world to see if this beloved, iconic house becomes home to a lucky new family," the listing says.
Is the Bluey house for sale?
Is bluey moving house.
Some fans speculated that maybe, just maybe, the Heelers won't sell the house after all.
Mr Pearson didn't confirm or deny any of this.
What's in the future for Bluey?
We don't know.
There's huge demand for more Bluey but despite its global popularity, the creators plan on sticking to the same approach they've had with the show all along.
"We have to love it ourselves first," Mr Pearson said.
"We have to love these characters and find it funny ourselves.
"It was never a teachable show — it was always about making people laugh.
"As long as we're making something we love and we're proud of and believe in, I think we'll be alight."
The children in the show are voiced by real children — not grown-ups pretending to be kids.
So will that mean Bluey and her mates will grow up with them? That's a bridge the team will cross when they get to it.
"Kids grow up, we can't stop it," Mr Pearson said.
"We're good for now and we’ll hang on to our voices as long as we can and as much as we can."
Why do so many people love Bluey?
Bluey is currently the number one show in the US — and that's not just kids' shows, but television shows overall.
And while it's popular with kids, there's something about Bluey that resonates with adults.
Each episode is inspired by real life, drawing largely from creator Joe Brumm's experiences with his own daughters.
"They're those moments from kid's lives that you can't make up," Mr Pearson said.
"Once they happen, they’re gone, you forget about it and they grow up."
But the team behind Bluey take those moments and immortalise them in beautifully colourful animations.
It's those fleeting moments that might remind older viewers of times in their childhood.
"It's cartoon dogs but beneath that it's unedited real life," Mr Pearson said.
“A massive thank you to the audience for welcoming Bluey into their homes.
“It's the biggest privilege that we've never taken lightly."

Sunday with Shirley Manson: ‘I impersonate my mother by making a chicken dinner’
The Garbage singer talks about church in childhood, her need to enjoy life and her favourite arty amusement park
Sundays growing up? We’d go to Saint Bernard’s in Edinburgh, which had beautiful blue velvet carpets and wooden pews. Upstairs there were little wooden gates, which I found fascinating, but church was boring and dull. I’m not a believer. I like a fun Sunday as opposed to a boring one. Sunday achievement? I’ve got to the point where I’m aware that my life span is running out. It sounds gloomy, but I’ve realised I have to enjoy life. I’ve been susceptible to depression. Now I think: ‘You’d better go out there because in 20 years you won’t be as capable.’ Just getting out of bed and feeling alive feels like a plus. Recent Sundays? I lost my dog Veela, a ginger rescue terrier, last year. Sundays have been a bit sad since. I have no routine. At least last Sunday was fun. Last Sunday? I went to my favourite French bistro, Figaro in Los Feliz (which means ‘happy ones’), with my darling husband. We had croissants, which I became obsessed with recently because for a while I’d gone off breads. Now I’m back on breads, which isn’t great for the waistline but wonderful for the soul. You live in LA? I do. Then my husband – and this is what made the Sunday spectacular – said we should go down to Luna Luna , an amusement park created in the 1980s by a bunch of incredible artists: Salvador Dalí, David Hockney, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat . It was so elating, it brought tears to my eyes. Sunday dinner? I will, if I can, impersonate my mother by making a chicken dinner on a Sunday night. I was once on the tour bus with my band mate Duke Erickson. We were watching the shopping channel and they were selling this copper pan that could do anything. Next birthday, Duke gave me the copper pan. It’s been a lifesaver –I can now ape my own mother by shoving the chicken, vegetables and gravy in one pan. Bob’s your uncle.

Dave Sunday in the Republican primary for attorney general | Endorsement
Republican voters have two strong candidates to choose from, but the York County district attorney offers the strongest track record and most forward-thinking policy proposals.
The good news in the Republican primary race for Pennsylvania attorney general is that both candidates said President Joe Biden won the 2020 election. The bad news is they tiptoed through their respective answers during a meeting with The Inquirer Editorial Board.
Before York County District Attorney Dave Sunday said Biden won, he went on about how it matters if some voters don’t believe the election outcome — no “ matter how we got here .” State Rep. Craig Williams , who represents parts of Chester and Delaware Counties, said Biden won, but added that “electioneering” occurred and that then-Attorney General Josh Shapiro failed to investigate every allegation of fraud.
It is alarming that many GOP candidates who know better still struggle to repudiate Donald Trump’s manufactured and repeated falsehoods regarding the 2020 election. The danger to democracy still looms and requires elected officials to put country before party. Trump, the Republican standard bearer, is already claiming if he loses in November then that outcome was rigged. But if he wins, never mind.
Given Trump’s past and potential future efforts to overturn elections, the next attorney general must have the moral fortitude to defend democracy and the rule of law. Pennsylvania cannot afford an attorney general who goes wobbly in the face of Trump’s intimidation tactics.
Both Sunday and Williams avoided the full MAGA rhetoric but gave cautious responses regarding Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and his four criminal indictments . On other issues, such as addiction and mental health, both candidates seemed almost progressive.
But Sunday would not concede Trump “lit the flame” that sparked the insurrection. He said the former president “could have done things that would have made that situation better and made it less violent.”
Williams said the images he saw on TV were “disgraceful” and “not a good look for our democracy.” But he added that Trump wasn’t at the U.S. Capitol during the riots, and issued a tweet urging “peaceful protests.”
As for Trump’s four criminal indictments, Williams said the cases in Georgia and New York , especially, are “more political than not,” while Sunday said he wanted to see what emerged from the trials before making a judgment.
Both Sunday and Williams were critical of Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s soft-on-crime approach. But Williams, who led the House impeachment of Krasner, struck a harder line. If elected, Williams said he would investigate Krasner. Many of Krasner’s problems are self-inflicted , but efforts to impeach or investigate him are a costly and divisive waste of time.
Sunday called Krasner’s tenure a “train wreck” but said he would try to work with him. That is a more sensible approach for prosecutors who must avoid partisan politics.
Another divisive issue facing the next attorney general is abortion. Fortunately, Sunday and Williams avoided the extreme rhetoric of other state attorneys general who plan to prosecute those who help women travel to another state to get an abortion. Williams said he would not prosecute anyone who comes from another state and receives a legal abortion in Pennsylvania. Sunday said he would follow the law.
On many key issues , the candidates largely agree. Both support the death penalty and oppose legalizing marijuana. Both served in the military and have experience as prosecutors.
Williams, 58, graduated from Duke University and received his law degree from the University of Florida. He served in the Marines and was a federal prosecutor. His wife, Jennifer Arbittier Williams, was a longtime federal prosecutor and briefly served as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania before entering private practice .
If elected, Williams said his top priorities would be combating gun violence, fraud that targets senior citizens, and addiction largely through trauma-informed therapy .
Sunday, 48, was born in Harrisburg and spent four years in the Navy after high school. He then worked for UPS while going to college and law school at night, graduating from Pennsylvania State University in 2002 and Widener Law School in 2007.
Sunday was first elected district attorney in York County in 2017. If elected attorney general, he plans to increase access to mental health services, combat the opioid epidemic, and bolster reentry programs. During his tenure as district attorney, gun violence in York has decreased dramatically.
Overall, Sunday has the strongest track record, the most forward-thinking policy proposals, and a demeanor that suggests he is amenable to bipartisanship. The Inquirer endorses Dave Sunday in the Republican primary for attorney general.

Terry Anderson, AP reporter held captive for years, dies at 76

Terry Anderson, who was the longest held American hostage in Lebanon, grins with his 6-year-old daughter Sulome, Dec. 4, 1991, as they leave the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Damascus, Syria, following Anderson's release.
LOS ANGELES — Terry Anderson, the globe-trotting Associated Press correspondent who became one of America's longest-held hostages after he was snatched from a street in war-torn Lebanon in 1985 and held for nearly seven years, has died at 76.
Anderson, who chronicled his abduction and torturous imprisonment by Islamic militants in his best-selling 1993 memoir Den of Lions, died on Sunday at his home in Greenwood Lake, New York, said his daughter, Sulome Anderson.
The cause of death was unknown, though his daughter said Anderson recently had heart surgery.
"He never liked to be called a hero, but that's what everyone persisted in calling him," said Sulome Anderson. "I saw him a week ago and my partner asked him if he had anything on his bucket list, anything that he wanted to do. He said, 'I've lived so much and I've done so much. I'm content.'"
After returning to the United States in 1991, Anderson led a peripatetic life, giving public speeches, teaching journalism at several prominent universities and, at various times, operating a blues bar, Cajun restaurant, horse ranch and gourmet restaurant.
He also struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder, won millions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets after a federal court concluded that country played a role in his capture, then lost most of it to bad investments. He filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
Upon retiring from the University of Florida in 2015, Anderson settled on a small horse farm in a quiet, rural section of northern Virginia he had discovered while camping with friends. `
"I live in the country and it's reasonably good weather and quiet out here and a nice place, so I'm doing all right," he said with a chuckle during a 2018 interview with The Associated Press.
In 1985, he became one of several Westerners abducted by members of the Shiite Muslim group Hezbollah during a time of war that had plunged Lebanon into chaos.
After his release, he returned to a hero's welcome at AP's New York headquarters.
As the AP's chief Middle East correspondent, Anderson had been reporting for several years on the rising violence gripping Lebanon as the country fought a war with Israel, while Iran-funded militant groups tried to topple its government.
On March 16, 1985, a day off, he had taken a break to play tennis with former AP photographer Don Mell and was dropping Mell off at his home when gun-toting kidnappers dragged him from his car.
He was likely targeted, he said, because he was one of the few Westerners still in Lebanon and because his role as a journalist aroused suspicion among members of Hezbollah.
"Because in their terms, people who go around asking questions in awkward and dangerous places have to be spies," he told the Virginia newspaper The Review of Orange County in 2018.
What followed was nearly seven years of brutality during which he was beaten, chained to a wall, threatened with death, often had guns held to his head and often was kept in solitary confinement for long periods of time.
Anderson was the longest held of several Western hostages Hezbollah abducted over the years, including Terry Waite, the former envoy to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who had arrived to try to negotiate his release.
Throughline
A history of hezbollah.
By his and other hostages' accounts, he was also their most hostile prisoner, constantly demanding better food and treatment, arguing religion and politics with his captors, and teaching other hostages sign language and where to hide messages so they could communicate privately.
He managed to retain a quick wit and biting sense of humor during his long ordeal. On his last day in Beirut he called the leader of his kidnappers into his room to tell him he'd just heard an erroneous radio report saying he'd been freed and was in Syria.
"I said, 'Mahmound, listen to this, I'm not here. I'm gone, babes. I'm on my way to Damascus.' And we both laughed," he told Giovanna DellÓrto, author of "AP Foreign Correspondents in Action: World War II to the Present."
He learned later his release was delayed when a third party who his kidnappers planned to turn him over to left for a tryst with the party's mistress and they had to find someone else.
Anderson's humor often hid the PTSD he acknowledged suffering for years afterward.
"The AP got a couple of British experts in hostage decompression, clinical psychiatrists, to counsel my wife and myself and they were very useful," he said in 2018. "But one of the problems I had was I did not recognize sufficiently the damage that had been done.
"So, when people ask me, you know, 'Are you over it?' Well, I don't know. No, not really. It's there. I don't think about it much these days, it's not central to my life. But it's there."
At the time of his abduction, Anderson was engaged to be married and his future wife was six months pregnant with their daughter, Sulome.
The couple married soon after his release but divorced a few years later, and although they remained on friendly terms Anderson and his daughter were estranged for years.
"I love my dad very much. My dad has always loved me. I just didn't know that because he wasn't able to show it to me," Sulome Anderson told the AP in 2017.
Father and daughter reconciled after the publication of her critically acclaimed 2017 book, "The Hostage's Daughter," in which she told of traveling to Lebanon to confront and eventually forgive one of her father's kidnappers.
"I think she did some extraordinary things, went on a very difficult personal journey, but also accomplished a pretty important piece of journalism doing it," Anderson said. "She's now a better journalist than I ever was."
Author Interviews
'the hostage's daughter': a traumatic ordeal that shaped the life of sulome anderson.
Terry Alan Anderson was born Oct. 27, 1947. He spent his early childhood years in the small Lake Erie town of Vermilion, Ohio, where his father was a police officer.
After graduating from high school, he turned down a scholarship to the University of Michigan in favor of enlisting in the Marines, where he rose to the rank of staff sergeant while seeing combat during the Vietnam War.
After returning home, he enrolled at Iowa State University where he graduated with a double major in journalism and political science and soon after went to work for the AP. He reported from Kentucky, Japan and South Africa before arriving in Lebanon in 1982, just as the country was descending into chaos.
"Actually, it was the most fascinating job I've ever had in my life," he told The Review. "It was intense. War's going on — it was very dangerous in Beirut. Vicious civil war, and I lasted about three years before I got kidnapped."
Anderson was married and divorced three times. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Gabrielle Anderson, from his first marriage.

They say that no good deed goes unpunished. Today's reading from Acts depicts the irony of the human mindset at just about any time in history. What leads us to react negatively to someone who is doing good? Is it that they are not part of our party — be it the Sadducees, the Republicans or the Democrats? Is it that they did the good thing in a way that we didn't like or was in competition with us? Perhaps we just don't like the person and nothing they do can seem good to us.
Peter and his companions were arrested for doing a good deed — for healing a cripple. As Peter explains why he did what he did, we see how he was interiorizing Jesus' way of being. As Acts tells the story, Peter claimed no glory or power for himself, but explained that all he did was done in the name of Jesus.
That obviously rankles the powers who had recently approved of Jesus' execution. They thought they were done with him — but not only did his newly audacious disciples declare that he lived, they acted like him and went about doing what he did. Instead of dying, the Jesus movement was spreading!
Fourth Sunday of Easter
April 21, 2024
Acts 4:8-12 Psalm 118 1 John 3:1-2 John 10:11-18
This story offers a prelude to the Gospel of the good shepherd. The selection we read today says nothing about the good shepherd abandoning 99 and going after one. Rather, here we meet the pastor who says that he will do anything — even give his life — for his sheep.
Jesus contrasts a good shepherd with one who works for pay rather than for love of the sheep. Folks like that aren't necessarily bad, but they aren't much good when evil strikes and divides the flock.
A key to understanding the good shepherd is that she or he (many women tend sheep) knows the sheep and they know their shepherd. That knowledge is more than the ability to recognize a voice or a familiar figure.
The knowledge Jesus is talking about — now referring to people — is an intimate, interior knowledge. Those who know one another like this are bound together from their insides out. Jesus claims that their mutual relationship mirrors his relationship with God the Father. They exist in one another more purposely, consciously and lovingly than unborn children live in their mothers' wombs.
The First Letter of John describes this relationship with God by calling us children of God. It echoes John 1:13 , explaining that we are born, not in the natural way, but by God's own decision.
In a sense, we might understand our being born of God as the process and goal of our lives. In nature, we are born as God's creatures, part of the creation that naturally exists in God. Being born of God or being children of God adds unfathomable quality to that natural state of blessedness.
Now we turn back to Peter.
Peter claimed that he did what he did "in the name" of Jesus. This isn't about magic words or power. This is Peter's way of saying that he lives in Christ and Christ in him. Peter has known the earthly Jesus and the risen Christ and he has made a choice to live in Christ.
It's a new and humbling state for him. At last, like Paul, he could say, "I live, no longer I, but Christ in me" ( Galatians 2:20 ).
This is what Peter preached to the religious leaders. He proclaimed that the resurrection of Jesus Christ opened up a new route to God. He wasn't simply talking about a new belief; he was explaining the Spirit-given power that allowed him to enter ever-more purposely and consciously into the very life of God, participating in the unity of the one flock continually being gathered by the Good Shepherd.
Today's readings invite us into long and oft-repeatable contemplation and action. They invite us to stand alongside Peter and search our hearts until we can explain why it is that we do what we do and what kind of power we are exercising.
Jesus' image of the good shepherd is another variation on the theme we hear throughout John's Gospel: The Son of God became flesh in order to draw us into unity with God and one another, a unity that can be called eternal life.
For Peter, as for us, taking in and taking on the effects of the Resurrection is the task of a lifetime. We accomplish it at least as much in action as in contemplation. While we can believe much about Jesus, the real invitation is to believe "through him and with him and in him," becoming ever-more identified with him by loving whom he loves and allowing him to work through us.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Nikita Chibrikov scored the game-winner in his NHL debut and Cole Perfetti added two goals as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 Thursday night in the regular-season finale for the playoff-bound teams.
“It’s like the dream, which you start from the first steps on the ice and live with this every day,” said Chibrikov, who was called up from the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose earlier Thursday.
The victory produced some notable accomplishments for Winnipeg.
The Jets finished the regular season giving up 199 total goals, the fewest in the league and one less than the Florida Panthers, to earn the William M. Jennings Trophy for the first time.
“Give the players credit,” Jets head coach Rick Bowness said. “The players have to go on the ice and do it, and they have to go out there every night and be committed to it.”
The Jets also extended their win streak to eight games, tying the franchise record. Their 52 victories (52-24-6) also matched the franchise record for wins in a season with the 2017-18 squad.
Winnipeg’s 110 points secured second place in the Western Conference behind Dallas and home-ice advantage in the first three rounds of the playoffs against teams other than the Stars.
Gabe Vilardi also scored for the Jets, who won won two of the three games against the Canucks this season. Laurent Brossoit made 18 saves for his 15th win of the season in his 23rd game.
Conor Garland had a goal and assist for the Canucks (50-23-9). Elias Lindholm added a power-play goal.
Thatcher Demko stopped 22 of 25 shots in his second straight start in net for Vancouver after returning from a 14-game absence because of a knee injury.
“Thatcher is the last guy I’m worried about,” Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes said. “He made some massive saves tonight and he’s going to make some big saves throughout the (playoff) series.”
The Canucks had their two-game win streak halted and closed out their last five games with a record of 3-1-1.
Both clubs rested players as they prepare for the first round of the playoffs.
The Jets were without top-line forwards Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor, as well as star defenseman Josh Morrissey and starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck. The Canucks sat forwards J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser.
Vancouver head coach Rick Tocchet said his team’s play wasn’t bad.
“Got to move on,” he said. “Now the big time. The big prize now is playing on Sunday.”
Canucks: Will host the Nashville Predators in the opener of a first-round playoff series on Sunday.
Jets: Will host the Colorado Avalanche in the opener of a first-round playoff series on Sunday.
