What should your finance intern cover letter look like - formatting and organizing your information

Have you ever wondered what are the must-have sections you need to include in your finance intern cover letter? Our builder sets those up for you with:

  • Header - dedicated to your contact information, the role you're applying for, and the date (don't forget to include your name);
  • Greeting and opening paragraph - to create a personalized and memorable experience for recruiters;
  • Body paragraph - emphasizing your skill set and knowledge that aligns with the role and helps you to stand out;
  • Closing paragraph - leaving a great impression and ending with an optional signature.

Use a cover letter template to discover the best formatting for your finance intern cover letter: that is single-spaced paragraphs and wrapping your content in a one-inch margin.

Ensure that both your resume and finance intern cover letter are in the same font . Stand apart from the crowd by using modern, yet simple fonts, like Chivo and Rubik, instead of the overused Arial and Times New Roman.

Did you know that the Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your finance intern cover letter? Instead, submit your profile in PDF to recruiters to keep the same formatting and the design intact.

The top sections on a finance intern cover letter

  • Header: This includes your name, address, phone number, email, and the date, which ensures the recruiter knows who you are and how to contact you.
  • Greeting: Tailor this section with the hiring manager’s name to make your letter personal and demonstrate attention to detail, which is essential in finance.
  • Introduction: Briefly state your purpose for writing, your interest in the finance internship, and mention any pertinent previous experiences or studies to catch the recruiter’s interest.
  • Body: Highlight your skills relevant to financial analysis, understanding of financial software or systems, and any academic or practical achievements that show your competence for a finance role.
  • Closing and Signature: Politely express your enthusiasm for the potential to contribute to the team, and your availability for an interview, then formally close the letter with your signature to maintain professionalism.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proficiency in financial modeling and analysis: Demonstrates an ability to understand complex financial scenarios and assists in making data-driven decisions.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles: Essential for accurate financial reporting and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Attention to detail: Ensures accuracy in financial transactions, data entry, and reporting, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of financial information.
  • Technical skills with finance software: Familiarity with programs such as Excel, QuickBooks, or other financial management tools is important for efficiency and effectiveness in daily tasks.
  • Analytical and critical thinking: Ability to dissect financial data and provide insightful recommendations for business improvements and strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills: Necessary for presenting financial information clearly to team members who may not have a finance background, and for contributing to collaborative projects.

What matters most when tailoring your finance intern cover letter salutation

Your finance intern cover letter greeting should feel welcoming to recruiters.

Use their first name (e.g. "Dear Marshall" or "Dear Sara"), if you've previously been in touch with the hiring manager and are on a more friendly basis.

If this is the first time you're contacting the recruiters, start your finance intern cover letter with:

  • their last name (e.g. "Dear Ms. Ali" or "Dear Mr. Stevens") - look up who's the hiring manager for the role on social media or the company website;
  • generalized greeting (e.g. "Dear HR Team") - just don't use "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Hiring Committee,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms. Last Name],
  • Dear [Full Name],
  • Dear [Job Title] Search Committee,

Get creative with your finance intern cover letter introduction

Recruiters are going to assess plenty of candidate profiles for the role. Thus, anything you do to stand out will win you brownie points.

Use your finance intern cover letter introduction to share something memorable about your experience .

But before you go down the rabbit hole of creativity and humor, align your message with the company culture.

For example, if you are applying for a role in some startup, use those first two sentences to tell a funny story (about your experience) to quickly connect with the recruiter.

The middle or body of your finance intern cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story

Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your finance intern cover letter, it's time to get down to business .

Hear us out, the body of your finance intern cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.

Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.

Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.

Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.

In the undertones of your story or finance intern cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.

Time to wrap up your finance intern cover letter

Writing the closing paragraph of your finance intern cover letter is just as important as the salutation.

You have to make it personalized to the job advert and recruiter.

Experienced professionals advise candidates to end with a request or reminder for follow-up. Write that you're grateful for the opportunity, and, at the same time, hint that you're available for the next steps of the process.

Otherwise, you could also conclude your finance intern cover letter by facing the future. How do you see yourself, as part of the team? In particular, how would you settle in your new role in the first six months to a year?

No experience finance intern cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their finance intern cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Your finance intern cover letter is your best shot at standing out by showing your motivation and the unique skills you'd bring to the job:

  • Chose no more than one achievement, which you'd be talking about in the body of your finance intern cover letter, by focusing on skills and outcomes;
  • Address recruiters with their first or last name, or "Dear Hiring Manager" in your finance intern cover letter greeting;
  • Introduce in no more than two sentences what makes your profile unique (perhaps it's your motivation, enthusiasm, or appreciation of the company you're applying for);
  • Select the same font you have used in your resume (avoid Times New Roman and Arial, as most candidates tend to invest in them);
  • Close your finance intern cover letter with a promise of how you see yourself growing in the company and the benefits you'd bring about.

What is a cover letter for an internship?

Do you need a cover letter for an internship, how to write a cover letter for an internship in 7 steps, 5 real-life internship cover letter examples, key takeaways: how to write a cover letter for an internship.

Generally speaking, an internship cover letter is a formal document that accompanies your resume when applying for an internship.

When it comes to its content, a cover letter for an internship falls somewhere between a traditional cover letter and a motivational letter .

  • A traditional cover letter , used by job applicants with years of experience, is supposed to underline some of the candidate's most relevant and impressive skills, qualifications, and work achievements .
  • A motivational letter , used mostly in academia, aims to communicate one's passion for the subject, their motivation, and personal goals .

Hence, a cover letter for an internship combines the purpose of the traditional cover letter (convincing the recruiters that you're the right person for the job) with the tone and strategy of the motivational letter (writing about personal motivations and goals).

A truly successful internship cover letter should answer the following questions:

  • Who are you?
  • Why are you interested in this particular internship?
  • Why are you the best fit for this internship?
  • What do you want to gain from this internship?

Absolutely!

In fact, you should always attach a cover letter to your internship application , even if it isn't explicitly required from you.

Why, you ask?

Well, consider this: Internships are crucial stepping stones towards your dream career. And they're also incredibly competitive. A single internship opening can be answered by tens of applicants at a time.

But how can you stand out from a crowd of equally inexperienced candidates? Certainly not by your non-existent professional accomplishments, right?

When companies look for interns, they don't expect you to have a ton of real-life experience. They aren't looking for a “finished product,” but for someone with a genuine desire to learn and enthusiasm for the job.

And these two are your weapons of choice!

How can a cover letter for an internship help you?

Apart from the reasons mentioned above, your internship cover letter is also responsible for:

  • Conveying first impression. Usually, recruiters will read your cover letter before looking at your resume. So, it's the perfect opportunity to introduce yourself to them in a memorable way.
  • Showing your efforts. Next, taking the time to craft a thoughtful cover letter shows that you're willing to put in that extra effort to stand out from the rest of the candidates.
  • Highlighting your communication skills. Also, a well-written cover letter demonstrates your ability to articulate your thoughts clearly and professionally.
  • Showing your professionalism. When you walk into a room, it's polite to introduce yourself and shake everybody's hand. This is exactly what a cover letter does! To attach one to your application is a common courtesy.

Now that you're familiar with the whats and whys , let's have a look at how to write a good cover letter for an internship step-by-step.

For example : Application for [name of the internship] internship – Surname.

Then, place your contact information (your name; professional email address; phone number; link to your website / portfolio / social media accounts if relevant) directly into the header .

If you know the recipient's name, address them by “ Dear [full name] ,” or “ Dear Mrs/Mr [last name] ,”. If you don't know who to address the cover letter to , address it more generally to “Dear Hiring Manager,” .

In the first paragraph of your cover letter , start by stating your name and where you studied (including your current degree and year of study). Proceed by explaining how you came to know about the internship and what are your motivations for applying to it.

Since you don't have much work experience, you can talk about your academic achievements; relevant coursework; dissertation project; extracurricular activities; volunteering; membership in relevant societies, etc.

The closing paragraph of your cover letter should reiterate your desire to get the specific internship, express gratitude to the recipient for their time and consideration, and include a final call for action (i.e. "I look forward to discussing the next steps during an interview." )

Finally, based on how you greeted the recipient of your cover letter, you can sign off with either “ Yours sincerely ,” or “ Yours faithfully ,” . If you addressed the recruiter by their name, sign off with the former; if not, use the latter.

What can you take away?

  • Eye-catching header.  Firstly, the header is visually clearly separated from the rest of the text. This makes the recruiters notice it immediately. Plus, the contact information of the company is also featured in the left-hand corner - just like it would be on an actual letter.
  • Research the company before applying. Notice sentences like: “ I really like and relate to what Philips stands for … ” and “ Furthermore, it is very appealing that Philips operates on an international level… ”.This shows that the candidate’s done a thorough research of the company's philosophy and structure.

#2 Warner Bros. Public Relations Intern Cover Letter Example

  • Share a personal story. This can help you establish a sentimental connection between you and the company. Show them that for you, working for their company means more than any old internship.
  • Name-drop a referral. Now, this is a little bit of a cheat code. But, if you happen to know about anyone who has worked/currently works for the company, slip their name into your cover letter.

#3 University of Massachusetts Boston Intern Cover Letter Example

What can you take away  .

  • Write about what you want to gain from the internship. It shows that you're not there just to have something to put on your resume; but that you’re motivated by the idea of gaining actual industry knowledge and skills.

#4 Audit/Tax Summer Internship at CohnReznick Cover Letter Sample

  • Mention any relevant academic activities. If you're wondering how to write a cover letter for an internship with no experience whatsoever, this is your way to go! For example, notice how this candidate noted all of his relevant courses, skills, association membership, and competition participation.
  • Focus on transferrable skills. Especially when your study programme doesn't necessarily fit the internship opening to a T. Instead, focus on any transferable skills you've picked up.

#5 Intern at NBC Cover Letter Sample

  • Keep your opening and closing paragraphs short and sweet. As you can see in this example, it helps keep a certain visual harmony of the overall document. And, despite the length, both paragraphs do exactly what they're supposed to. Besides, recruiters might be discouraged to read the rest of your cover letter if your introductory paragraph is too long.

To sum it all up, an internship cover letter is a formal document that you submit together with your resume when applying for an internship. Its content should be something between a traditional cover letter and a motivational letter.

Its purpose is to introduce yourself to the recruiters in a more personal way than the resume allows.

The main things you want your internship cover letter to communicate are:

  • who you are,
  • why you're interested in this opportunity,
  • what make you the best fit for the internship,
  • your motivation (your long-term professional goals),
  • your desire to learn (what you want to gain from the experience).

To write a truly impactful and persuasive cover letter, we recommend following these 7 key steps:

  • Specify which internship you're applying for in the subject line.
  • Include your contact information in a header.
  • Address the recipient appropriately.
  • Introduce yourself & your motivations in the opening paragraph.
  • Elaborate on why you're a good fit and what motivated you in body.
  • End your cover letter with a confident closing paragraph.
  • Finish off with a polite sign off.

While your resume is important, nothing makes you stand out more than a well-written cover letter. A strong one can highlight your attention to detail, work ethic, and passion for the industry. And while most job postings request a resume and cover letter, many candidates skip sending one because they seem too complicated; this is a mistake. A cover letter is your opportunity to sell yourself as a great candidate.

It's important to tailor your cover letter to each job opportunity. A hiring manager will quickly recognize if you've used a form template; taking the time to write a unique letter shows dedication and a real interest in the role.

Include details from the job description and use examples from your coursework or other work experience to show how you would succeed in the position's responsibilities. That is a level of detail most candidates will skip and will impress hiring managers.

Jane Jones 32 Willow Street Willow Creek, NY 12900 232-456-3425 jjones@rochester.edu

September 1, 2018

Mr. George Gray Assistant Vice President Asset Management Division Goldman Sachs 120 Spring Street Rochester, NY 12900

Dear Mr. Gray,

I am very excited about applying for the summer analyst internship program with Goldman Sachs that was advertised in Sunday’s Rochester Herald. Bill Hershey recommended that I apply for the internship since the qualifications directly match my educational experience, interest, and skills.

I am currently a junior at the University of Rochester majoring in business with a concentration in finance. Throughout my college career, I have excelled in all of my finance courses and my professors have recommended that I serve as a tutor for students requiring assistance with class assignments. My courses have provided me with a strong background in the methodologies required for successfully analyzing and synthesizing important financial information and in preparing documentation to assist management when making critical business decisions. I am a quick learner and enjoy the challenges of doing comparative, quantitative, and cash - flow analysis in addition to portfolio and asset management and financial modeling and asset valuation. I believe my strengths in these areas would serve me well as an intern in Goldman Sach’s summer program.

In addition to my relevant coursework, my internship with Merrill Lynch provided me with a great opportunity to use my knowledge and skills and apply them to the real world. I very much enjoyed assisting customers with their financial decision - making and I found that my excellent interpersonal skills served me well when dealing with challenging clients. I was invited to return this summer as an intern but I am especially excited about the summer program that Goldman Sachs offers students and I feel that this opportunity would provide me with additional knowledge and skills that will add to my abilities to positively serve clients in the field.

Thank you for your time and interest and I look forward to hearing from you. I will call in one week to discuss my qualifications and see if you have any questions for me at that time.

Why Cover Letters Matter

When you’re applying for an internship , you typically don’t have a lot of job experience or qualifications to back you up. What you have is a cover letter that can make your introduction into the business world for you. That’s a lot of pressure on one letter.

Not only that, but while hiring managers and recruiters say they want to see a cover letter, they also admit they often don’t read them. Cover letters are skimmed, at best. The average time spent reading a cover letter is just six seconds.

Keep that in mind as you’re writing your letter. How do you prove to them that you’re the best person for the job in six seconds? What makes a cover letter stand out ?

Zippia has the tips you need to create a finance internship cover letter that is solid and should put you one step closer to getting that internship you want. But there is still some work to be done and anything you can do to make your cover letter stand out will take you even further.

Cover Letter Tips for a Finance Internship

Keep these tips in mind when you’re writing your internship cover letter.

Professional. You might not have the credentials yet, so you need to sound confident and professional. This may be your first time writing a business letter, so it’s a good idea to become familiar with a business letter layout . Luckily, we’ll go over the elements of a cover letter below and give you some examples.

Qualifications. You most certainly already have some qualifications. Maybe a few classes you’ve taken in your field, perhaps some certifications. Anything you’ve done to enhance your qualifications and make you stand out from the other applicants will work in your favor.

Customize. This tip is kind of a bummer, but it can help you in the long run. You can’t keep using the same cover letter over and over. It’s just not going to get their attention. A generic cover letter template won’t cut it. Spend some time customizing each one.

Career goals. Many people who hire interns are legitimately interested in helping them achieve their goals, so go ahead, tell them what your goals are . If you’re not a fit, then denying you the internship might be a good thing. It opens the door for that perfect job where you’ll learn what you need to succeed, and you’ll make the right connections.

Proofread. If you’re not entirely confident in your ability to proofread your cover letter (and your resume), then download an app that will do it for you or have someone else help you out. There’s almost nothing more off-putting than professional correspondence that’s not written correctly.

Parts of a finance internship cover letter.

Most cover letters are essentially the same, whether they’re for an internship or a senior-level position, and your’s should follow suit. Creativity is great and will come into play later, but as far as the layout and essential parts of a cover letter go, recruiters and hiring managers want to know what they’re looking at. It’s a good idea to stick to this cover letter format.

Your contact information. Your contact information needs to appear somewhere on the cover letter, either at the top left or center. Make it as easy as possible for the letter reader to contact you.

Employer’s contact information. This might feel awkward if you’ve never written a professional letter before. Traditionally, you include the contact information for the person you’re writing to. With the widespread acceptance of email, and assuming you’re emailing your cover letter, this isn’t required.

Salutation. The salutation is the way you address your letter. When writing a business letter, it’s best to use the person’s first and last name, or their title and last name, if you can find that information.

If you can’t, then use “Dear Hiring Manager” or one of its alternatives. Don’t be overly friendly and call them by their first name only or start with “Hey,” “Hi,” or “Hello.”

Opening. Let them know why you’re writing to them. That is the main purpose of the opening. It can be boring and not give them any new information – which means it probably won’t go over too well. Or you can make it exciting and get them intrigued about you.

Cover letter body. The body of the letter often scares people, but it shouldn’t. Break it down into three short paragraphs that cover the following information:

First paragraph. Let them know what you’re doing to achieve your professional goals. Classes you have taken and the degree you’re working on.

Second paragraph. Let them know that you have done your research on their company and why you’re a good fit for their internship program. Remember, you’re telling them why they want you. You’re not telling them what you want.

Third paragraph. Sum up what you’ve said and offer more information if they need it.

Closing. This is another place where you don’t want to be too friendly. This could be your future boss , after all. Try “Sincerely,” “Best Regards,” or “Appreciatively.”

Signature. In an email, there should be one blank line between the signature and your typed name. Actual letters require four returns between the closing and your typed name. If you’re not physically going to sign your name, then there’s no need for the extra lines. Follow your name with your phone number and email address.

CC. Often, students applying for internships will also send the cover letter to their career advisor at school. Especially if that person is helping you get the internship. In this case, it’s best to let both parties know that you’ve sent them both the same letter.

This can be done by adding a carbon copy (CC) notation at the bottom. If you’re sending the letter to Jim Smith at Acme Accounting and your advisor, Mary Jones at Baylor University, then you’ll finish Jim Smith’s email with this notation; CC: Mary Jones, Advisor at Baylor University.

Attachment. Typically, your cover letter is going to include a resume and maybe even some other documents. It’s a good idea to make a simple notation at the bottom to let them know that the letter should include other information.

Finance Internship Cover Letter Opening

Use the subject line in your email to list the position you’re applying for. This cuts right to the chase and lets the person who reads it know why you’re writing. In a world filled with spam, it’s nice to know what an email from an unknown person is regarding.

This also lets you dive right into your opening and set the tone for success .

I was informed by my Student Advisor, Mary Jones, that you have a Finance Internship opening this summer. As I will be between my junior and senior years at Baylor University, this is the perfect time for me to fine-tune my education and get some real-world experience. I think my qualifications and education, so far, make me the ideal fit for your company.

It’s short and sweet and lets them know who you are, where you are in your education, and teases them a little about your qualifications. The key is that you need to follow up that tease with some actual data, which will happen in the next part.

Finance Internship Cover Letter Body

Remember, it’s only three paragraphs. You can do this. You’re selling your experience, yourself , and you’re saying thank you . That’s it. Let’s give it a shot.

3. Showcase Your Skills & Achievements:

  • Financial & Data Analysis: Mention any projects or coursework highlighting your proficiency in these areas. Did you excel in a financial modeling assignment? Talk about it!

5. Conclude with Confidence: Finish strong. Reiterate your interest in the position and your belief that you'd be a valuable asset to the team.

Tips to Make Your Cover Letter for Finance Internship Stand Out

Crafting a cover letter for a finance internship can be daunting. Afterall, it is the first impression you'll make on a hiring manager. But fear not! Let's break down some pro tips that can elevate your cover letter from good to exceptional.

1. Address the Right Person

Starting with a generic "To Whom It May Concern" isn't ideal. If possible, research the hiring manager's name. "Dear Hiring Manager" is an acceptable alternative if the name isn't available, but personalizing always creates a better impression.

2. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

Attention to detail is paramount in finance. Any spelling or grammar mistakes can be a red flag. Consider using tools or getting a fresh pair of eyes to review your letter.

3. Quantify When Possible

Numbers speak volumes in the finance world. If you've achieved specific results in your projects or coursework, mention it. For example, "I enhanced financial model accuracy by 15%."

4. Be Genuine in Your Passion

Instead of stating, "I am passionate about finance," illustrate why. Was it a specific event, a course, or a personal experience that sparked this interest?

5. Tailor Your Letter

One-size-fits-all doesn't apply here. Each company has its unique values and culture. Highlight experiences and skills that align with the specific company's ethos and job description.

6. Keep It Concise

While sharing every accomplishment may be tempting, your cover letter should be a snapshot. Stick to the highlights that are most relevant to the internship. Ideally, keep it to a single page.

7. Use Keywords but Don't Force Them

Remember the list of keywords you're armed with? Use them naturally within your letter, especially if they align with the internship's requirements. This can also help if the company uses applicant tracking systems.

8. Close with Confidence

End your letter reiterating your enthusiasm and inviting further discussion. Instead of a passive "I hope to hear from you," try "I am eager to explore how my skills align with XYZ Company's goals and would welcome the opportunity to discuss further."

5 Steps for the Perfect Finance Cover Letter

Now that you know what a great cover letter looks like, you're all set to write your own !

Just follow these straightforward steps:

#1. Put Contact Information in the Header

Start your finance cover letter by creating a header for your contact details, the same as on your resume .

Here's what you should have in there:

  • First and Last Name. Make sure your full name is in plain view at the top.
  • Professional Title. Match this with the specific finance role you're after. Hiring managers usually hire for several roles at once, so this will help them notice your application.
  • Email Address. Keep it professional, like a combo of your names. The quirky high school email won't cut it. (e.g.: [email protected] is not a good look, but [email protected] is fine.)
  • Phone Number. Ensure your phone number is accurate since employers need to reach you easily. A missed digit could mean a missed interview.
  • Location. Usually, city and state/country are enough. But if you're open to relocating or working remotely, mention it.
  • Relevant Links (optional). Share your LinkedIn or any other relevant social media that can back up your financial expertise.

Now, let's talk about reaching the hiring manager’s contact information :

  • Company Name. Mention the financial institution you're applying to.
  • Hiring Manager's Name. If you can find it, great! Check the job listing, the company's website, or LinkedIn profile.
  • Hiring Manager's Title. If they've got a fancier title than “Hiring Manager”, such as “Chief Financial Officer”, address them accordingly.
  • Location. City and state/country details are crucial, especially for global firms.
  • Date of Writing (optional). Adding the date you penned your letter gives it a professional touch.

#2. Address the Hiring Manager

Once you've sorted out your finance cover letter's contact details, it's time to address it properly .

Say goodbye to the generic "To Whom It May Concern."

The right greeting can make a positive impression on the hiring manager and set the tone for your entire finance cover letter.

Start with some research. Check the job ad, the company's website, or their LinkedIn profile to identify the finance department's hiring manager. Find their name and use it.

Be sure to address them professionally. You can use “Ms.” or “Mr.”, followed by their last name. But if you're unsure about their gender or marital status, simply use their full name. For example:

  • Dear Ms. Anderson
  • Dear Emily Anderson

And if you can't find information about the hiring manager or the head of the finance department, address your letter to the department or the company as a whole:

  • Dear Finance Department
  • Dear Finance Hiring Team
  • Dear Human Resources Team
  • Dear Head of Finance

#3. Write an Eye-Catching Opening Statement

As the saying goes, time is money, and hiring managers value time a lot. In fact, it doesn’t take them more than a few seconds to decide if an application is worth reading in detail.

That's why writing a strong introductory paragraph in your finance cover letter is essential. Start by introducing yourself as a professional and clearly stating why you're enthusiastic about the position. Showing your passion for the finance industry or the specific role can instantly capture the hiring manager's attention.

But conducting some research on the company can significantly boost your chances, too. The more insights you gather about the employer, the better you can show them your alignment with their work culture or company goals. This shows that you're not applying randomly; you genuinely have your sights set on this specific opportunity, and you’re ready to put in the work.

Depending on your level of experience, you can also kick off your cover letter with an accomplishment or a skill that makes you an ideal fit for the role. Just make sure that this paragraph isn’t too lengthy. All you need to do is spark the hiring manager's curiosity and encourage them to explore your cover letter further.

#4. Use the Cover Letter Body for the Details

The body of your cover letter is where you have to prove you’re the ideal candidate for the position.

But don’t repeat what it says on your finance resume . This is your opportunity to really show your financial prowess and qualifications in a way that leaves a mark. Your mission is to persuade the hiring manager that you're the standout choice among the competition, even if they have similar experience and skills.

So shine a spotlight on any noteworthy achievements you have and use the job advertisement as inspiration.

Tailoring your cover letter to align with the specific job ad is crucial. You should emphasize skills and experiences that resonate with the company's needs. For example, if you're applying for a finance role in a tech-driven firm, focus on your tech-related financial skills rather than more generic experiences in finance.

Be sure to demonstrate your understanding of the company, its financial model, or the intricacies of the finance industry as a whole. If you're well-acquainted with the company's financial products or services, mention it in your cover letter to show how and why your financial expertise aligns seamlessly with the company’s mission and corporate culture.

Lastly, let your enthusiasm for the role shine through your words. Convey your genuine excitement for the position and your confidence in your ability to contribute to the company. Show them that you're not just another candidate but the financial talent that meets all their requirements.

If you need even more inspiration, check out our other cover letter examples !

#5. Wrap It Up and Sign It

The ending of your finance cover letter is your opportunity to leave a lasting impression on the hiring manager.

Start closing your finance cover letter by confidently reiterating why you’re the perfect fit for the role and giving a brief recap of your key skills that prove it.

After that, it’s time for a call to action. Encourage the hiring manager to take the next step, whether it's scheduling an interview or exploring your application in more detail. A well-placed call to action can make all the difference and get you closer to your dream job.

Finally, choose an appropriate closing line. And don’t forget to sign your full name underneath. Like so:

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me via the provided email or phone number so that we may further discuss my application. I eagerly await the opportunity to go over how I can help Company X on its mission to success.

Best regards,

And if you're seeking an alternative to "Best regards," consider these options:

  • Warm regards,
  • Respectfully yours,
  • Thank you for your consideration,

Finance Cover Letter Structure

You've got the basics of cover letter writing under your belt!

Now it's time to refine yours with some essential cover letter tips :

#1. Match Your Resume

Clarity is important in the finance industry, and the best place to start with it is on your cover letter.

You have to make sure your finance cover letter’s formatting and layout align with your finance resume as much as possible. This can convey a polished and well-organized image of you as a candidate and make it easier for the hiring manager to identify your application out of the bunch.

So keep your text neatly arranged on the page and maintain uniform font styles and sizes. Pay attention to the page margins and line spacing so your cover letter remains concise and still fits on a single page .

Or Use A Cover Letter Template Instead

Feeling overwhelmed?

Just try our resume builder and matching cover letter templates to make crafting your application easier.

Each template is crafted with input from hiring experts worldwide, so they meet all industry standards and look gorgeous.

#2. Mention Skills and Keywords

You don’t want your finance cover letter to come off as generic.

Try to mention as many keywords from the job advertisement as you can. Hiring managers already know what they want from a candidate, so you have to show them you meet all their criteria.

Doing this proves you’ve paid careful attention to the job advertisement, and it also directs hiring managers to the information they care the most about. Just don’t throw in those keywords randomly!

You want to build a narrative that shows your expertise. Focus on the most important skills mentioned in the job ad that match the ones you already have, and explain how they’ve helped you excel at your job.

#3. Add Any Relevant Links

Your finance cover letter should match your resume’s contact information down to a T.

So, if you added any relevant links to one, make sure the other has them, too. Specifically, when it comes to listing personal websites or social media profiles like LinkedIn, hiring managers appreciate it.

This gives them quick and easy access to see your previous work instead of having to circle back to your resume to find a link. They could even connect with you directly on LinkedIn, so this extra touch of accessibility and professionalism can leave a great impression on potential employers.

Key Takeaways

And you’re all set with writing your finance cover letter!

After reading our guide, we trust you’re well-equipped to secure the exact job you have your sights set on.

Before you head off, let’s summarize some main points from our article:

  • Your finance cover letter’s look should match your resume since it shows professionalism, and attention to detail, and makes it easier for the hiring manager to spot your application. Use a resume builder with matching cover letter templates to save time.
  • Keep your contact information factual and professional. You don’t want to use an immature email address from your high school years since it could leave a bad impression.
  • Include any skills and other keywords from the job description in the body of your cover letter. Use them to illustrate how your experience matches what the employer is looking for and to present yourself as an ideal candidate.
  • Wrap up your cover letter with an appropriate closing line, and don’t forget to sign your name at the bottom. This little detail is the bow that ties together a spotless application.

Finance Intern Cover Letter Example (Full Text Version)

Julius Malema

Dear Mr. Rick Morty,

I am applying for the financial analyst position at the Charleston International Airport. I found out about CIA through my fiancé, who is a TA in the Financial Department. I believe I am a wonderful fit for the culture, work environment, and values espoused by Charleston International Airport. My skills in finance can help this organization improve functionally, thus, allowing for an even greater focus on improving the human condition and educating world-class leaders.

Currently I am earning my BBA in Financial Management at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC. My desire is to put my skills and knowledge to use in a professional environment. I am in the Honors program and I am set to graduate with a 3.96 cumulative GPA and will be the recipient of the CSU School of Business Outstanding Graduate in Finance award. While I have been taking classes, I have also been interning with finance department for the Charleston County Aviation Authority. Through my internship I have gained finance experience, including working in accounts payable and receivable, handling CRM Reports, balancing credit card charges, reconciling bank statements, and logging remittance reports. I am very proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. I applied this knowledge in a business plan competition at CSU. My team placed earned first place; I primarily handled the financial statements for that project. While at CSU, I have also started an on-campus muffin delivery business (Sophomore year). I called it "Moufflet" and earned several hundred dollars of net income during the first two months of operation.

Just so you know a little bit more about me, I started my own podcast, which I call "Third Culture Journey." It is geared towards people who grew up overseas (like I did) or who are in a transition phase of life. I travel often during summers and have visited many countries, including: Ukraine, England, Israel, Spain, Canada, Armenia, Iceland, and Senegal. I have been to over twenty countries and hope to continue learning about (and seeing) the world.  I believe travel broadens my worldview and helps me understand people better. Most of the trips I was on were work-related. I helped build a well; I translated for various teams; I assisted in renovating buildings; and I also helped lead at many different camps. I try and lead whenever I can to get more experience. I was the student body president at my High School, as well as the yearbook editor. At CSU I have served as a student government senator and as Chairman for the Judiciary Committee, as well as the Master-at-Arms. I used my knowledge in finance to write a bill about restructuring the tax system. It was passed through the SC Student Legislature, and was then sent to actual SC Legislature. With my experience and knowledge, my hope is to work for an organization like Hylant, with ideals and goals congruent with my own.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter; I look forward to hearing back from you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and thank you so much for much for your consideration.
