What is your vision for the future? Sample interview answers & more

The future of the world doesn’t seem too bright. But that doesn’t mean your future cannot be bright , or that you should have no vision for the future at all. Applying for a place at a study program , for a scholarship , or for an entry level job , you may often face this question. But what do the people in the admission committee, or the hiring managers, want to hear from you? We will try to find the answer on the following lines.

First of all, they want to hear that you have some vision for the future . Saying that you have no idea whatsoever what to do with your life won’t take you anywhere–even if that’s true. Now, it doesn’t mean that you have to be laser-targeted, calling out a specific job or even a specific organization you want to work for in five or ten years. But you should at least vaguely tell what’s ahead for you.

Secondly, your vision for your future should at least somehow correspond with the thing you want to study, or the job you try to get (while facing this question). As an example, it would not make much sense talking about running your own vet clinic, or about becoming a professional musician, while you apply for a place at law school. Saying that you’d like to work for some non-profit organization (fighting for a cause you support), or perhaps become a divorce lawyer, makes much more sense in this case. Of course this was just an example, but I hope you got my point.

Another option would be philosophize a bit about the future of the world, focusing on the bigger picture. Even in this case though, try to avoid excessive negativity . Even if you share negative predictions, try to point out some positive contribution you want to make, basically how you hope to make things at least a bit better. Okay, let’s have a look now at 7 sample answers to this interesting question. Needless to say, in a selection of 7 answers I cannot cover all possible areas and directions one can take in life, but I tried to come up with a nice mix of answers (including some unconventional answers) that will hopefully give you a good idea about your own answer to this one. Enjoy!

7 sample answers to “What is your vision for the future?” interview question

  • My vision for the future is to have a great job, one in which I can have some impact, ideally in the sphere of social work. That’s why I chose your study program . Ideally I want to work with the elderly population, since I understand this group is getting bigger and more vulnerable every year. Of course, life’s not only work. I also hope to start a family one day, and to live a good and balanced life, getting an opportunity to spend time in the nature, devote myself to music–my hobby, and at the same time be a good employee, husband and father .
  • The future looks super uncertain to me. With the wars erupting left and right, climate change, water crisis, and you name it, I find it a bit brave to think too far ahead. Having said that, I believe we should not be mere passive observers , and negativity won’t change anything either. That’s why I want to study Physics, and perhaps in the future help with developing solutions that will tackle the climate change , or at least add my small bit when we talk about saving the Earth. That’s my vision for the future, and you can be sure I will give it my best shot.
  • I imagine teaching at an elementary school , ideally in my city. Maybe it isn’t a big vision for the future, but it is one that gives me joy, and strength to continue in my studies, and to give it my very best shot every day . Then one day I hope to become a mother myself, and do a good job in this department too. I also imagine being healthy, and you can be sure I will continue eating healthy and exercising, doing my best to stay in shape. All in all, I am grateful for the opportunities I have in life , and enthusiastic about the future ahead.
  • Vision for my future, or for the future of the world ? When we speak about the second, a lot needs to happen so we have any future as a mankind. But yeah, I can probably not do much to change the bigger course of things, or can I? And you can be sure I do not cry at night or have nightmares. At the end of the day, we should focus on what we can control (at least to some extent) and that’s our own future. In that department, I hope to become a successful manager, leading big projects. Having said that, I understand that everyone needs to start from the bottom , and that many years will pass until I reach my goals. But I am ready to work hard and to dedicate myself 100% to my career, and then I know a good income will come. Law of action and reaction cannot be broken.
  • My vision for the future is to always focus on the present moment . Because that’s the only real thing to be honest. Of course, it is good to have goals and dreams, and I would like to make a career in medicine , but at the same time, the only moment we always really live, and take care off, is the present moment . Thinking too much about the future, being nervous about whether we will succeed or not, or having excessive expectations on ourselves will bring us only to psychiatrists and an early grave. Hence I do not think about it at all. I just know I want to be the doctor, and that’s it. Will give my best in the classes, study hard, and enjoy every moment of this journey. Of course, all of that is possible only if you give me a chance to study here.
  • I want to win a medal at the Olympics . That’s why I chose the best school, that’s why I train so hard every day. That’s my vision for the future- -seeing me standing there, on the top of the world, with a national anthem playing in the background, and tears running down my cheeks. Of course, I know a lot has to happen until then, and that many other people have the same dream . But I have the talent, the dedication, and if I get a scholarship here I will also have all I need to pursue this dream, and make my vision become a reality one day.
  • Well, I hope to find out soon . At the moment I am not exactly sure what I want to do with my life, and how I hope it will look like, let’s say in ten years from now. But I want to give myself a good start , and having a degree in management is definitely something that will allow me to pursue my career in various organizations and fields. Generally speaking, I hope to do a good service to society , and be a valued member of local community.

So that’s it! I hope my answers gave you some idea, and you are now ready to deal with this tricky interview questions. With you good luck in your interview, and if you’re still not sure, I recommend you to check 7 sample answers to the following questions:

  • What is your purpose in life?

15 Personal Vision Statement Examples

Now that you recognize it's time to approach your life proactively, you need to create a personal vision statement .

Clearly defining the vision you have for your life requires more than just thinking about it. You need to write it down.

The act of writing something down and then reading it daily reinforces the message and makes it more real.

Even better, print out your personal vision statement and post it where you can see it frequently.

This reminder will increase your motivation and foster the self-growth you desire.

What Is a Personal Vision Statement?

How to write a personal vision statement, final thoughts.

A personal vision statement is a clear, concise summary of your personal goals and dreams for the future . It serves as an anchor when life pulls you in different directions.

It is also a guide for making decisions based on your values, and it helps you stay focused on the goals you want to achieve.

The process of writing one compels you to think about the purpose of your life and how to achieve that.

You'll identify your most important guiding principles and describe how you intend to apply them to your life.

Your statement also introduces you to the power of setting concrete goals. Research by psychologist Gail Matthews found that people who wrote down their goals succeeded 33% more often than people who only thought about their goals.

If you want to live the life you envision, you need to avoid the trap of abandoning your dreams in the realm of the abstract. Writing down your vision is the best way to actualize it.

To get started, you can study personal vision statement examples to get ideas about how to write yours.

Writing a personal vision statement begins with free writing. At this point, you simply ask yourself questions and write down whatever comes to mind. Don't impose any judgments at this point because you want to uncover your hopes and dreams for the future.

  • List your personal strengths .
  • List your personal weaknesses.
  • Write down your core values .
  • Think about how your values should guide interactions with family, at work, and within your community.
  • Consider the best uses for your life energy based on your inner compass and values.
  • Identify some specific goals that you want to pursue.
  • Imagine the legacy of your purpose, goals, and actions.
  • Examine your notes to see what jumps out as most important.
  • Compose a paragraph that summarizes your priorities in the form of a vision statement.

It's important to keep your vision statement as a single paragraph. This way, you'll be able to read it easily and frequently.

If you want to write more paragraphs to address specific goals, that's fine, but these would be supplemental to your main vision statement.

Here are several vision statement examples you can use to help you brainstorm your own. There are no strict rules here related to the words you choose and the concepts you include.

But if any of the statements in these examples resonate with you, feel free to make them your own and rewrite them to suit your goals and dreams.

I want to be a source of stability and inspiration for my family. I commit myself to succeed in my career while balancing my emotional needs with those of family members. I want my actions to promote harmony and increase everyone's chance for future happiness. When stress threatens to overtake me, I consciously take time to calm down to prevent acting with hostility or annoyance toward others. I also express my needs and seek support from others instead of letting my problems stew inside me as I've been prone to do in the past.
My life's work has a greater purpose beyond my own material needs. I identify a problem in my community and take responsibility for contributing to its solution. My purpose is to serve others in a way that best matches my skills and values, and I am committed to making choices in my personal and professional life that furthers that purpose.
My personal vision recognizes that I am a small part of a living Earth. I want to live in a way that represents authentic participation in a sustainable ecosystem. My guiding principle is reducing my negative impact on the environment. I direct my spare time toward regenerative practices that nurture the soil, such as gardening and tree planting. I control my consumption by choosing a modestly-sized home and reducing my production of plastic waste through conscious consumer choices and actions. I become an example to others for the purpose of spreading a greater appreciation for green living.
My vital role in the lives of my children automatically means that I have a great purpose in life. Instead of dreaming about the world seeing my value, I strive every day to be the hero of my family. My job as a parent is to mindfully raise my children in an environment of acceptance, love, and affirmation.
Advancing my career is important for me at this point in life. If I achieve my career goals, I'll have greater financial stability and peace of mind. To make these things happen, I intend to set certain standards for my professional life and only make strategic compromises. I want to keep myself accountable for my career instead of falling back into the habit of blaming others for my disappointments. I cannot control everything that influences my career, but I can persist after setbacks and focus on what I can do to improve my skills and increase my value. This means that I should seek continuing education and make time for networking with colleagues. I must put myself out there to connect with opportunities.
My rough childhood has inspired me to choose a career in teaching. I accept the challenges of this occupation with grace because children need positive adults in their lives. For some children, a caring adult within their community can give them hope when things aren't good at home. I believe that this purpose helps me be content with my life and heal the wounds from my past.

Upon much reflection and consultation with those who know me best, I accept that my stubbornness is both my greatest strength and weakness. To take advantage of it as a strength, I intend to volunteer with my local legal aid office, where my experience as a paralegal can benefit people who lack resources to cope with legal challenges. Legal issues often require patience and persistence, and these two traits are reflected in my stubborn nature.
Although I value my introverted nature, I intend to experience more human connections in my life. I recognize the value of stretching myself and interacting with more people. To this end, I am setting the goals of joining a book club and hosting dinner parties twice a year.

My whole life I imagined myself with children, and the time has come for me to make family a priority. I plan to devote more time to dating in the hopes of finding lasting love and building a happy, healthy family life in the next five years.
My personal vision statement places faith at its center. Attending religious activities gives me a deep sense of spiritual connection with others. I want to learn more about my religion and provide comfort to people in their times of need. As a result, I intend to join a place of worship, attend services, and participate in at least one outreach program.
I see now that I could be in much better financial shape if I had been thoughtful earlier in life. My mission now is to value financial responsibility above impulsive purchases. I make money decisions related to how they benefit me instead of how they provide short-term gratification. This helps me alleviate financial stress and improve my well-being.
My lifetime goal is to master the art of non-judgment. Seeing the best in every living thing and viewing situations gracefully and compassionately is essential. Part of the journey is acknowledging my faults and learning to love myself – flaws and all. I choose to let kindness light my path and appoint empathy as my faultless guide. Spreading joy and understanding is my mission and something I can control. I pray my efforts lighten others’ emotional loads.
Learning to be a mentally healthy, admiringly responsible, financially independent adult will be a journey filled with peaks and valleys. But I can reach the summit by being mindful of my budget and living at or below my means. Not internalizing cultural messages and comparing myself to others on social media is vital to my success. A happy, healthy, stress-reduced life awaits if I adopt these guiding principles and learn to love what I have instead of coveting what I don’t.
Growing up, my parents, teachers, and other kids told me I wasn’t smart enough. But now I realize my learning style didn't mesh with my school's tactics. With dedication and patience, I can conquer any academic goal I set. I will no longer listen to the naysayers. Instead, I’ll take things one step at a time and make progress at my own pace. If I learn to control my thoughts and develop a solid work ethic, my horizons will expand, my reading and writing skills will improve, and from there, I’ll be able to develop fresh and exciting ideas.
I acknowledge that psychological issues, unaddressed toxic trauma, and fraught family dynamics caused me to behave poorly and act selfishly in the past. But it’s a new day, and I give myself permission to move on from the past and treat people better. Nobody is perfect; I will falter at times. But I know if I’m mindful, generous of spirit, and never take advantage of others, my relationships will flourish, and I’ll find happiness rooted in kindness, compassion, and mutual respect.

Are you ready to write your personal vision statement?

The time that you invest in crafting a personal vision statement will keep you grounded amid the endless distractions of life.

As you can see in the personal vision statement examples presented here, your vision doesn't have to follow any particular direction.

Let your heart define your purpose and values, and then use your mind to pursue your values-based goals.

my vision for future essay

Personal Nursing Philosophy and Vision for the Future Essay

Introduction, choice of nursing, essence of nursing, beliefs and values, vision for the future.

The ultimate of nursing practice is to complete the link or cycle of care delivery within the healthcare system. Professionals in this field collaborate with physicians and clinicians to ensure that high-quality services are available to the greatest number of patients. This paper gives a detailed analysis of my personal philosophy of nursing. It describes why I chose this field, my beliefs and values, and vision for the future. My current limitations and strengths are also outlined in this discussion.

There are various reasons that explain why I pursued nursing as my career field. Firstly, my childhood dream was to join a profession that would empower me to meet the health needs of different patients. Secondly, one of my expectations is to support others and ensure that they address most of the challenges they face in their lives. Thirdly, I believe that I have a calling to work as a nurse. Camargo et al. (2018) indicate all nurse practitioners (NP) should be selfless, empathic, and sympathetic. The possession of such attributes explains why I have been able to achieve my goals as a practitioner.

Fourthly, nursing is one of the outstanding careers that give people an opportunity to engage in continuous learning and acquire additional skills. Such gains can make them successful in life and overcome the problems they face. This kind of understanding encouraged me to pursue such a career path. These explanations show that I will always meet the diverse health needs of my patients and guide them to transform their experiences.

Personally, I believe that the core of nursing is the ability to provide timely care, support, and empowerment to all patients with diverse backgrounds. This means that those who select it should not be focusing on a source of income or career. Instead, they have to develop various values such as trust, honesty, empathy, respect, and effective communication, that will eventually deliver positive results in healthcare. These aspects should become a true foundation of nursing practice.

From a historical perspective, practitioners in this field have been pursuing action plans that can result in exemplary care. Over the years, new concepts and models have emerged to strengthen the nature of nursing and address patients’ expectations. Ethical values have become critical attributes that many professionals should never ignore. These include veracity, beneficence, justice, accountability, nonmaleficence, and fairness (“ANA code,” n.d.). The existence of organized political leadership and democracy has triggered different health systems that reshape the behaviors, competencies, and philosophies of nurses. Clinicians should, therefore, consider these issues to support the quality of services many hospitals provide to their patients.

As a nurse, I have various beliefs and values that guide me when interacting with different people. For instance, I always put their needs first and pursue the concept of autonomy. Using the metaparadigms of nursing, I appreciate that patients are human beings who require adequate care. Those who have common diseases should receive continuous support in order to record positive outcomes (Masters, 2017). Individuals suffering from chronic conditions require adequate guidance to engage in lifelong management.

The relatives and family members of my patients play a significant role throughout the service delivery process. According to my nursing philosophy, a culturally competent approach is essential because it meets the demands of all patients. This means that their family members and relatives should be part of the process if positive health outcomes are to be recorded (Black, Balneaves, Garossino, Puyat, & Qian, 2015). I also believe that they require adequate support in an attempt to empower the identified patient. Such attributes will eventually result in holistic care.

The success of nursing practice depends on the nature of relationships existing among NPs and other health care providers. Personally, I consider the importance of a positive relationship with my colleagues. I embrace the concept of teamwork since it empowers practitioners to collaborate and maximize patients’ health outcomes. I implement several attributes that can ensure that all NPs pursue their goals diligently, such as respect, justice, fairness, integrity, collaboration, and cohesion (Camargo et al., 2018). I believe that all NPs should communicate effectively, solve emerging problems, and formulate shared decisions.

Another critical issue is that of my own health. Although my calling is to meet the medical demands of my patients, I still engage in practices and initiatives that will improve my experiences. For example, I consider the relevance of exercises, work-life balance, and medical checkup. I also seek timely treatment in order to overcome various illnesses. I understand that a positive personal health outcome will make it easier for me to deliver sustainable care.

A personal vision is relevant since it supports the attainment of career goals. Personally, my goal for the next two years is to practice in a new setting or unit that will make it possible for me to acquire and develop additional competencies (Masters, 2017). For instance, I will learn how to relate positively with my colleagues, apply different nursing concepts, and empower every patient.

Within the next five years, I am planning to enroll and complete my master’s degree in nursing. This achievement will be in accordance with my lifelong learning approach (Black et al., 2015). Consequently, I will develop new skills that can support me in my nursing practice. It will be possible to specialize and work in complex health settings.

My objective or vision for the next 10 years is to establish my personal clinic. I will pursue new studies in order to earn a doctorate degree in nursing. This gain why I will be able to start my private practice successfully and offer personalized, timely, and sustainable to all patients. This achievement will give me an opportunity to empower others and mentor them to develop adequate skills.

NPs should develop specific strengths and formulate powerful plans to address their limitations. My outstanding abilities that can support my goals include a strong grasp of the core values of nursing, such as integrity, empathy, professionalism, and justice. I also have good communication skills, relate positively with my colleagues, and embrace the concept of teamwork (Masters, 2017). The concept of lifelong learning will also take me closer to my professional goals.

However, there are specific challenges or limitations that might make it impossible for me to achieve my aims. The first one is that I am yet to appreciate the real benefits of critical thinking. This weakness affects my ability to make meaningful clinical judgments. The fact I fail to formulate adequate short-term goals is something that can affect my future aims. I will work on these limitations in order to emerge successful and transform the lifestyles of all my patients.

Vision for the Future

Vision for the Future

The concept of having vision for the future and working to make that vision a reality is not new to me. This has been an area of independent study for me over the last two or three years. However, I have yet to master the skill of accomplishing my vision and goals on a consistent basis because I am apparently lacking some key elements of the process. In order to realize my full potential, I must master the skills of personal vision, facing reality, and holding tension.

Personal Vision

I find it fairly easy to have personal vision for the future and how I want my life to be. My mind is continually thinking about how things in my life and in the world around me could be better. Most of my life I have struggled with being able to focus on my dreams and ideas long enough to be able to solidify the vision. Over the past few years I have greatly improved my ability to focus and get my thoughts down on paper in the form of goals.

Facing Reality

I have not put a lot of effort into trying to accurately identifying the current realities in my life. I guess have been too focused on the future and, quite frankly, examining my current realities does not seem as interesting as dreaming about the future. I think this might be one of the major limiting factors in trying to achieve my personal vision and goals. I will make it a priority to challenge myself to define the current realities of every area of my life before I try to make a plan to achieve my visions and goals because an effective route must have a defined end as well as a beginning.

Creative Tension

The space between reality and personal vision is where creativity lives. I am a highly creative thinker and I love the challenge of finding new and better ways to do things. In chapter five of our textbook, I gained new perspective on planning and creative thinking. The author described the difference between personal vision and current reality as being in tension with each other. Complacency and lack of focus, discipline, and determination to move toward my goals will relieve some of the tension, but will cause my vision to weaken and move toward settling on my current situation. Making detailed plans to move toward my visions and goals and working every day to do things to move me toward the vision will relieve the tension as well by moving my reality toward my vision. Creative thinking can be used to relieve the tension, but I must be careful to make sure that the tension pulls reality toward my personal vision and not the other way around.
