How to Write a High Band IELTS Essay on Hobbies

Here are two sample answers that will guide you on getting a high band score in the hobbies theme essay for IELTS Writing Task 2.

Question: Few people devote time to hobbies these days. Why do you think this is the case, and what effect does this have on an individual and society in general? You should spend around 40 minutes on this task and write at least 250 words in the essay.

Answer: Nowadays, there are only a handful of people who pursue a hobby with due diligence. In my opinion, this is not a positive development and can have many disadvantages for the individual and society in general. Leisure activities can be the much-needed relief from the bursts of high-level energy to cope with today’s highly competitive world. They not only keep you fit and healthy but also contribute towards society’s development. The paucity of time and introduction of alternative means of spending one’s free time are the top two causes for the declining number of people engaging in hobbies today. Demanding jobs and a tough education system make it harder for people to take time out and engage in recreational activities like gardening, dancing, yoga, etc. Additionally, with the new streaming platforms, social media applications, and online gaming communities, people often find themselves on the internet in their spare time rather than stepping out for some simple hobbies. The surge in demand for data and the rising number of online users serve as testament to this statement. With the absence of physical activities comes direct and latent consequences like deteriorating physical health leading to issues like obesity and declining mental health as a result of feeling alienated from society. The individual and the society suffer on account of these effects on physical health, mental health, and community building. For instance, as people increasingly choose the company of their smartphones over their friends and other members of society, they feel increasingly alone and start getting out of shape, as observed by some social scientists at the University of Los Angeles. To conclude, not interacting with others while engaging in hobbies has had a rather negative impact on individuals and society consequently. People should thus be encouraged to step out more and participate in various hobbies within their community to ensure they are in good health and instill in them a strong sense of belonging for the society.

Question: Some people are of the view that hobbies need to be difficult for people to be able to enjoy them well. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above statement? Write your answer with a minimum of 250 words and give relevant examples.

Answer: While some hobbies are fairly easy to pursue, others are more difficult to perform and pose a challenge for the individual. However, in my view, it is wrong to establish a correlation between the level of difficulty in performing a leisure activity and the enjoyment (or the recreation value) derived from that hobby. Some people truly find pleasure in easy hobbies like swimming. Such activities do not require a very high level of expertise to perform them and can be completed without putting a lot of strain on their physical health. However, that does not mean that swimmers do not like the activity as much. Another example of such hobbies can be people who like to go bird-watching. This is not a difficult hobby per se, but it still serves the purpose of recreation for the individual partaking in it. In contrast, sometimes, more challenging and difficult hobbies can be thrilling. These hobbies can be more rewarding and more satisfying in the end because the person goes through more challenges to reach the endpoint. For instance, video editing and filmmaking are two rather challenging hobbies that can be very rewarding for some people and, thus, more enjoyable. Therefore, in conclusion, I believe that both kinds of hobbies, easy and difficult, can be pleasurable for an individual depending on their preferences. Hence, it is wrong to state that one type of hobby is more enjoyable than the other simply because it is more challenging. The hobbies essay IELTS often presents can be very easy to tackle and should be written in coherence with the statement given and the question asked. However, to score a good band, you should follow a well-structured format like the ones given above in the sample answers.

Ielts writing task 2 – hobbies and interests change.

Popular hobbies and interests change over time and are more a reflection of trends and fashions than an indication of what individuals really want to do in their spare time. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

( 266 Words , 14 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

Some leisure activities become fashionable for a short time and then disappear when a new trend comes along, whereas others seem to be perennially popular. I can therefore only partly agree with the assertion that hobbies reflect changing fashions rather than our true interests.

On the one hand, it is true that many hobbies are simply passing trends. Children and teenagers, in particular, are attracted to whatever activity is currently popular among their peers. My 10-year-old niece, for example, seems to have a new interest every month, as she joins in with the latest craze that sweeps through her primary school. Over the last year or so, she has been obsessed with Rubik’s cubes, fidget spinners, squidgies and slime. In a similar way, there have been several different fitness trends for adults over recent years, from jogging to yoga to circuit training, and I doubt whether the majority of participants continued to enjoy those activities in the long term.

On the other hand, many people spend their free time doing popular activities that are far from trendy. One good example would be the game chess. Children and adults who enjoy playing chess are certainly not following a new fashion or wasting their time on something that they do not truly like. On the contrary, they are passionate about a game that has existed for hundreds of years, and they find it inherently fascinating and absorbing. I would say the same about many other hobbies, from reading to swimming.

In conclusion, Following trends and fashions or not, it is up to people. They choose the most suitable things for themselves.

Hobbies are something people enjoy doing as their leisure pursuit. Some hobbies are comparatively easy, while others prove to be more challenging. That is why, I think both kinds of hobbies can be interesting depending on people’s personal traits and preference, and I, therefore, tend to disagree that hobbies need to be essentially tough to be enjoyable.

To commence with, many people find it more interesting when they spend their spare time engaging in relatively simple activity, like reading, meditating, cooking, and painting for example. The reason why they tend to involve in activities that are not complicated is that they give them an avenue to take their mind off the stresses of a hectic lifestyle. A very good example is the hobbies I enjoy. I spend my free time devoting in painting as it is a way to calm my soul and feel energized for my work the next day. Thus, a hobby can help reduce stress by keeping one engaged in merely simple activities that are not associated with daunting challenges.

Conversely, there are people who enjoy difficult hobbies. This is because they want to push their limit, get off their comfort zone and achieve mastery in taming the mind, emotions, and the challenges of everyday life. Demanding hobby, according to them, is a demonstrative tool for breaking boundaries on a personal and professional front. A case in point is hiking. It is one of the quintessential weekend hobbies for individuals with a passion for long treks and exploring the beauty of nature. A recent study has revealed that hiking has a positive effect on productivity, as it helps people to focus on the present clearing their mind of all worries and increase physical fitness and stamina as well. But these kinds of challenging hobbies come with danger and they are not easy to pursue.

In pithy, simple hobbies can be pleasurable, but difficult hobbies can also be enjoyable. It, in fact, varies from man to man.

Viewed negatively, shopping can have dire consequences. Consumerism leads to financial mismanagement, with people overspending and resorting to borrowing for basic needs. Psychological issues, like shopping addiction, may contribute to criminal behaviors such as robbery.

In the past, people only bought what they truly needed. However, in recent decades, with increased purchasing power, shopping has become a favored pastime. I believe this shift should be discouraged because excessive consumption has negative impacts on both society and the environment.

As a society, we have grown wealthier, people now buy almost anything available, regardless of necessity. Shopping has turned into a hobby, leading to frequent upgrades of phones and cars. Manufacturers capitalize on this trend by releasing new versions regularly, exploiting the desire to shop.

A concerning aspect is that competition fuels among peers, often resulting in financial troubles. Easy access to credit cards allows buying without available funds, leading many into debt traps upon default. Excessive consumption generates more waste, contributing to overflowing landfills and pollution. Moreover, it depletes already scarce resources, like trees for furniture production, and increases fossil fuel use in manufacturing.

IELTS speaking part 1: Topics

The IELTS speaking test is divided into 3 parts. In part 1, you will be asked about whether you work or study or, alternatively, about where you currently live. Then, the examiner will ask you about two different topics to talk about. There are four questions to answer on each topic.

As speaking part 1 lasts for 5 minutes, you have about 1:30 to talk about each of these two topics. You need to show the examiner how good your English is right from the start.

When you have to answer a lot of questions in a short time, you do not have time to “think” of what you are going to say. You have to be spontaneous and, of course, sound confident.

Keeping these points in mind, let’s go on to look at a particular possible part 1 topic: Hobbies.

Hobbies as a topic

Part 1 topics are personal. The basic idea is for the candidate to talk about his or her personal experiences and feelings.

Imagine the examiner begins by saying something like: “Let’s talk about your hobbies” and immediately follow up with the first direct question. Remember here in Part 1, the examiner is just reading from a script and can only follow up any question with a “Why?” if he or she wants you to give more information, so it’s you, the candidate, who will be speaking more.

There will be four questions, excluding any possible “Why?” follow ups. With the hobbies topic, these could be what you hear.

What hobbies or interests do you have?

Do you need to use any special equipment to do this hobby?

Do you prefer to do your hobby with other people or do you prefer to be alone?

Why do you think so many people have hobbies?

Questions are speaking opportunities

The total amount of time you have to answer these questions will be around one and a half minutes, just 90 seconds.

How much can you say in 90 seconds?

We are probably talking about an average of 3 or 4 “sentences” for each question. I know, “sentences” is not the right word. But it will give you an idea. Let’s take an example.

Hobbies? Yes, I do. I love taking photos and I have this really expensive camera. It’s a Nikon and I’ve had it for about 5 years. In fact, my grandfather gave it to me. He was the one who got me interested in photography. What I like most is taking photos of landscapes. It’s risky walking around with a camera these days so I only take it with me at the weekends when I go out with family or friends.

I timed myself saying that. It took me 17 seconds. Of course, in a real interview that would be longer. We have to add some natural pauses and the occasional “er..” or “umm”. Let’s give it 22 seconds maximum. That would be reasonable. It may be a little too long in fact if we assume that we will answer each question in the same time. But, of course, some answers might be shorter. Perhaps, question 2, for example:

No, not really. I mean, I’m not a professional so I don’t have a tripod or anything like that. Everything these days is digital so I don’t have to worry about developing the film. All I need is the camera and then save and store them on my laptop.

That took me 12 seconds. If we call it 16 seconds, we are up to 38 seconds of candidate speaking time after 2 questions. Add the time it takes for the examiner to ask the questions.

Timing yourself

Practising in class, with other students or just by yourself, getting a feel for the timing is important. It’s so easy to time yourself. You don’t want to say too much and you don’t want to say too little.

If you go on talking for too long, the examiner will interrupt you anyway.

That is nothing to worry about …the examiner is working to a strict time schedule and wants to keep things moving. At the same time, prepare to say something like a minimum of 3, a maximum of 5 “sentences” with each question.

Level of detail 

If we look again at the answer to the first question, there are 5 elements.

Yes, I do. I love taking photos and I have this really expensive camera. (What the hobby is.)

 It’s a Nikon and I’ve had it for about 5 years. (How long I have had this hobby)

In fact, my grandfather gave it to me. He was the one who got me interested in photography. (How I became interested in this)

What I like most is taking photos of landscapes. (What I especially like about it)

It’s risky walking around with a camera these days so I only take it with me at the weekends when I go out with family or friends. (Any additional comment)

The sequence is quite simple and puts the hobby into a context, the classic “what”, “when/how long”, “how”, “who” and also “why” (..dangerous to walk around with an expensive camera so …).

An interesting personal context, perhaps a “story” to tell, a reason for doing something, all add up to a good Part 1 answer. Remember that the examiner is looking for those candidates who have an interesting story to tell, who sound confident and therefore fluent.

Fluency, our ability to speak coherently without unnatural pauses and hesitations, to a large extent comes from the vocabulary we know and use.

Talking about a hobby therefore should give us an opportunity to show the vocabulary we know to good effect. In my example, I illustrated this with a few simple examples: photography, photos, landscapes, tripod, digital. Nothing too technical.

Notice also the common combinations of words –collocations—that are typical in any language: take photos (of) …., (got me) interested in (taking photos), develop(ing) a film, save and store (photos) on (my laptop).

You should note down common vocabulary items associated with your hobby and work on using these items in context.

Sometimes it’s hard to say where vocabulary ends and grammar begins. Take the idea of collocations for example. We can see clear grammatical patterns that are worth noticing.

One important one is the use of the gerund . Gerunds are used as a verbal form after certain verbal structures. Verbs which express emotions, likes and dislikes can be followed by a gerund. I love taking photos. Grammatically, we can use a noun instead of the gerund, as in I love photography. Or, change the noun for a gerund. So, I can say: interested in taking good photos instead of interested in photography.

So, if, as in this case, we can see a clear grammatical structure to use effectively, study it and use it. Here are a few more examples with some possible verbs expressing feelings and opinions with different possible hobbies.

Also, notice the gerund in:

What I like most is taking photos of landscapes.

Here is a list of other useful ways to introduce our likes that way using a variety of hobbies as examples:

The main/one thing I like is hanging out with my teammates after the game.

The best thing (about it) is visiting all those places I only saw before in films.

One of the things I like about it is trying out new recipes.

Verb tenses and modals

Other important aspects of grammar are verb tenses , modals ( can, could, may, must etc. ) and conditional sentences . The examiner is paying attention to how accurate your grammar is and so you must take every opportunity to show how well you handle the following:

Verb tenses: Returning briefly to the example about photography, notice how I used 3 different tenses in a space of a few seconds.

Present, present perfect, simple past and each example in a context, a time frame. When you talk about your hobby, do the same. Mention the “how long” (present perfect with for/since ), the “when” (past simple with a specific time reference).

And the “future”? Well, a typical part 1 question, not included above, often refers to future plans. Something like:

Do you think you will still have/enjoy this hobby in the future?

Look at these possible answers:

(playing tennis)

Yes, I think I will. I’m still young but I’m sure that I will still be playing when I’m 40. Maybe I won’t be so agile but that won’t be an issue.

(rock climbing)

I don’t think so. I’m not going to be climbing when I’m 40! I’ll be too old.

Modals and conditionals

Using these forms correctly can really impress the examiner. Think yourself of possible examples related to your hobby. Here are a few examples on a variety of topics:

This year I might visit the Pyramids. If I go, I’m sure it’ll be an unforgettable experience.

I think everyone should learn how to cook.

If I had the money, I would buy a better camera.

Organise your topic knowledge. Make sure you know all the relevant terminology associated with it.

Note down what you would say in answer to all the questions use here. Think of other possible questions. Think of what to say at any moment if the examiner asks you for an explanation.

Think and read about hobbies in general. If you asked about the importance of hobbies for example, what would you say? Possible aspects to mention might include: the need we all have to relax, to reduce stress levels; how it can help someone to make new friends; how it can be fulfilling personally; it can helps people when they retire.
