Step #8: After filling in the title and description, click Save .

If you already have your work experience listed on your LinkedIn profile, it's easy to get the site to automatically generate a resume for you. Here's how to do it.

All LinkedIn profiles include a button to download the profile as a PDF . This PDF is basically your resume, containing all the experiences you've listed on LinkedIn. This includes your academics, work experiences, and everything else that you have on your profile.

To download this quick resume, first, open LinkedIn in a web browser on your computer. When LinkedIn opens, click your profile icon at the top of the site and select "View Profile."

On the profile page, right beneath your profile picture, click the "More" option, and select "Save to PDF."

In a few moments, your browser will start downloading your resume PDF from LinkedIn.

• Include values.  Like a resume,  include numbers  to demonstrate how you have added value at work. For example, you might state how much money you saved a company through your cost-saving solutions, or explain how you completed a task within a certain period of time.
• Add content and accomplishments . You can upload documents or include links on your LinkedIn profile. Take advantage of this – include papers, presentations, projects, personal websites, and other materials that demonstrate the quality of your work. This is a great way to show, rather than tell, employers about your strengths.
• Get recommendations and endorsements. To a potential employer, a  LinkedIn recommendation  is a reference in advance. Try to boost your profile with LinkedIn recommendations from your connections. Also be sure to  endorse people in your network , and hopefully they will endorse you back.
• Create a custom URL and share your profile.  You want people to see your profile, so be sure to make it as visible as possible. Make sure your profile is public (check your LinkedIn settings to make sure you are visible to people outside of your network). Also consider  customizing your URL  so that you have a link that's easy to share. Mine, for example, is  https://www.linkedin.com/in/alisondoyle . You can include this URL in your email signature so that people can easily access your profile.
• Grow Your network. Another way to share your profile is to connect with other members and build your network. The more connections you have, the more opportunities you have. Of course, you should only connect with people you know. If you don’t know someone but would like to connect, be sure to send a private message introducing yourself.
• Update your profile regularly . Don't forget to update your profile when you change positions or companies. Also add links to new articles, projects, etc., as you complete them. Your profile should be dynamic and up-to-date. Spend a little time every month, even if you don't have major changes reviewing it and freshening it up .

How to update your LinkedIn profile before sharing your URL

Even if you choose not to include your LinkedIn URL on your resume, based on the stats above, it's still probable that hiring teams will look for it anyway. So, first things first, you need to ensure your LinkedIn profile has all the necessary elements and is professionally written. The last thing you want is for a hiring manager to find your profile halfway complete - that scenario is likely to put your resume in the thanks-but-no-thanks pile. 

While it's true that your LinkedIn profile and resume need to align with each other, the great thing about your LinkedIn profile is that it gives you the chance to share more about yourself than your resume can highlight - another reason to be sure to include LinkedIn on your resume. Yes, you want to have a profile up and running as soon as possible - especially if you're in the market for a new job - but don't create it in haste. Instead, when you're ready, give it some thoughtful consideration and take the time required to ensure it's a profile you're proud to share with employers. 

Another essential step to take before adding your LinkedIn URL to your resume is personalizing it. Yes, you could use the LinkedIn-generated URL that includes your full name followed by a string of seemingly random numbers and text at the end, but doing so looks unprofessional. Log into your LinkedIn profile

On the upper middle to right side of the LinkedIn navigation, click on the “Me” icon

From the menu that appears, click on “View Profile”

Select “Edit public profile & URL” from the top right corner, which will take you to your public profile settings

Click on the pencil icon below and to the right of “Edit your custom URL”

Customize the last part of the URL where you can enter information and click “Save”

LinkedIn allows you to customize your URL with 3 to 100 numbers or letters. When choosing what to use for the customized aspect, first remove any random string of text or numbers following your name. If your name alone isn't available, the next best option is to use a variation of your name that is still recognizable and professional. You're likely not surprised to learn that your LinkedIn URL should go at the top of your resume with your contact information . It's typically the last piece of contact information you'll include, following your phone number and email address.

When sending your resume by email, it's also wise to include your hyperlinked LinkedIn URL in your email signature. This offers easy access to your LinkedIn profile before the recruiter or hiring manager even looks at your resume. It's a good idea to include your LinkedIn URL in the contact information section of your cover letter , too.

How to put your LinkedIn URL on your resume

When listing your LinkedIn URL:

You don't need to include the "https://www." at the beginning. Only listing the rest of the URL is sufficient - for example, linkedin.com/in/karenjohnson22

You don't need to include a LinkedIn label for the URL - the employer will know what the URL is referencing since all LinkedIn URLs begin with "linkedin.com/in/" 

Hyperlink the URL in electronic versions of your resume

On the rare occasion that you might mail a hard copy of your resume, be sure the URL is easily legible and remove the hyperlink

When not to include a LinkedIn URL on your resume

It's clear that putting LinkedIn on your resume adds value in most instances. However, there are a few scenarios where you shouldn't include LinkedIn on your resume. 

Don't include your LinkedIn URL if:

You haven't customized your LinkedIn URL. As mentioned earlier, not customizing your URL might make you appear lazy to recruiters and hiring managers. Since the LinkedIn-generated URL also tends to be long and odd-looking, it could be distracting to human readers vs. adding value the way you want it to.

Your profile is out-of-date and incomplete. Again, it's imperative that your LinkedIn profile is current and complete if you're in the job market and share your URL on your resume.

You don't feel good about your profile. Even if your LinkedIn profile is current, if you don't feel good about it or don't feel it represents you in the best light possible, don't include the URL on your resume. Instead, wait until you've made the updates and changes that make you want to share it. With that said, since employers tend to look you up even if you don't include your URL, try to make those changes with thoughtful consideration sooner rather than later - especially if you're currently applying for jobs. If you have a LinkedIn learning certificate, it can be a valuable addition to enhance your job marketing materials. Here are some ways to include LinkedIn Learning on your resume:

Include it in your Certifications section. The most obvious place to include a LinkedIn Learning certificate is in your list of certifications, if you include such a section on your resume. 

Share it in your Education section . Suppose LinkedIn Learning is your only certification or additional training beyond your education. In that case, you can choose to list it with your education. For this scenario, some good naming conventions for the section are “Education & Certifications” or “Education & Credentials.”   

Reference it in your resume summary. You might mention your LinkedIn Learning certificate in your resume summary , if it helps to fill in any skills gaps you have or if you lack relevant work experience for the position.

Add it to your skills or competencies list. If you don't need to emphasize your LinkedIn Learning training in your summary, or are forgoing a Certifications section on your resume, then you can opt to list it in your skills or competencies list.

How to watch the total solar eclipse safely without the special glasses

• On April 8, a total eclipse is set to blot out the sun over a significant portion of North America.
• Solar-eclipse glasses are selling out, and prices have risen 27%.
• If you can't get your hands on a pair, here are eight ways to safely see this spectacle without them.

On April 8, the sun is set to disappear behind the moon's shadow in a total solar eclipse .

The 115-mile-wide path of totality is expected to streak across North America, plunging nine major US cities into several minutes of total darkness.

It's a rare and spectacular event that more than a million Americans are predicted to travel for . The next total eclipse isn't set to happen in the contiguous US for another 20 years.

But spectators should be wary of letting their excitement get the best of them while watching. There are important safety measures to be taken, especially to protect your eyes.

It's never safe to look directly at the sun during an eclipse without eye protection — except during totality. That's why solar-eclipse glasses are crucial, because they're specially designed to allow you to view the sun while it's only partially covered by the moon's shadow without risking damage to your vision.

But Forbes reported that prices for these protective glasses had jumped 27% in the weeks leading up to the eclipse. And eclipse glasses could get harder to find as supplies sell out because of frantic demand.

If you get caught without a pair on April 8, don't panic! You've got options. Here are some easy ways to enjoy the eclipse without special glasses.

Use a solar filter to look through your phone camera

If you can't get your hands on a pair of eclipse glasses, you may have better luck buying a solar filter for your smartphone camera .

The sun's harsh UV rays can damage your phone's camera lens, just like they can damage your eyes. A solar filter allows you to safely point your phone camera directly at the eclipse so you can watch it on the screen. During totality, you can remove the filter without risking damage to your phone.

Plus, this method comes with the added bonus of letting you snap photos of the eclipse while you watch.

To get the best shot, you can use an app named Solar Snap. It was created by a former Hubble Space Telescope astronomer, Doug Duncan, and adjusts your phone camera to the perfect settings for photographing the eclipse.

Wear welder's glass rated shade 12 or higher

Welder's glass is designed to protect welders' eyes from the bright light of their acetylene torches. Because it blocks UV light, it's also perfect for looking at the sun.

Just make sure the welder's glass you use is dark enough to provide sufficient protection. NASA recommends shades 12, 13, or 14, with 12 the least opaque and 14 the most.

Build a pinhole camera

Making a pinhole camera is a fun and easy way to make sure your eyes will be protected during the solar eclipse. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has instructions for building a simple one in just a few minutes.

All you need are scissors, tinfoil, a piece of thick card stock (or paper), tape, and a needle.

Related stories

First, cut a hole in the middle of a sheet of cardstock. Then, tape the edges of a sheet of tinfoil over it and carefully poke a hole in the center of the foil with a needle. And there you have it!

Hold your pinhole camera over something white, like a wall or a sheet of paper, and the shadow of the eclipse will appear. You might have to move your camera around a bit to figure out where the best focal point is.

Use a colander to project the eclipse onto a piece of paper

This method works similarly to a pinhole camera but doesn't require any cutting, poking, or taping.

The tiny holes in a kitchen colander can project light from the eclipse onto a piece of paper or cardboard so that you see the effect.

Stand with your back against the sun and the piece of paper out in front of you. Hold the colander over your head and watch dozens of tiny eclipse shadows appear. They should look like little crescents as the moon moves in front of the sun.

If you don't have a colander handy, you can grab anything with small holes in it: A straw hat or slotted spoon can also work.

Make a fist

This works the same way as a colander or pinhole camera, but instead of using a bunch of little holes, it uses just one.

With your back facing the sun and your paper or wall out in front, raise a fist above your head.

Make sure your grip is tight enough to only let a small point of light shine through. At the center of your hand's shadow, you'll see the shape of the eclipse projected on the surface.

Find a tree

Depending on where you are in the US, this may not work for you. But if you're in a warmer state where trees have already leafed out for spring, all you need to do is find one and look for its shadow.

You'll want to find one that has significant leaf cover and a good amount of shade. Look for the patches of sunlight that filter through the leaves. During the eclipse, they'll become crescent-shaped.

To make them stand out, you can lay a white sheet of paper down in the tree's shadow.

Point binoculars at a piece of paper

Never look directly at the sun through binoculars. The concentrated solar rays can quickly and severely damage your eyes.

But you can use them to project the eclipse onto a piece of paper. Just point the front of binoculars toward it and aim the other end toward the sun.

You can even adjust the crispness of the projection using the binoculars' focus knob.

Watch the eclipse live online

If all else fails, you can always turn to a digital livestream and watch the eclipse from the comfort of your home. Here are a few different ones you can use.

I Tested 4 Different AI Image Detectors: Here's How Accurate They Were

I put four AI image detectors to the test to see if they could accurately distinguish AI from human-made images.

If identifying fake art and photos is important to you, AI image detectors are invaluable—but some are more reliable than others. After testing the best apps available today, here’s how they each performed with AI-generated and human images.

After picking four of the best AI image detector tools around, I created two AI images on DALL-E 2. One is of a cat watching a butterfly. The other mimics a painting of a sailboat surrounded by birds.

Illuminarty, AI or Not, Hive Moderation, and SDXL Detector processed both of these images alongside a photo of elephant figurines definitely taken by a human.

The screenshots below display the initial results. Repeating the process didn’t change any outcome, which means that none of the apps learn as you use them. Their analysis and probability scores are based on their algorithms alone. You’ll find them listed from most to least accurate in detecting AI images.

Hive Moderation was the most effective AI image detector of the lot. The cat and butterfly image scored 99.9 percent. The sailboat was also marked as AI-generated with 98.3 percent certainty.

When given any image made by a human, Hive Moderation never gave a false positive. It can clearly tell the difference between real and artificial creations.

So, not only is Hive Moderation accurate, but it’s also very confident in its analytical capabilities. AI image generators struggling with hands stand little chance of fooling this AI detector.

While not the most attractive app, the SDXL Detector on Hugging Face performed almost as well as Hive Moderation, making it the second most accurate AI image detector on this list.

It scores uploaded files based on their likelihood of being AI versus human. The cat and butterfly image got 0.844 for artificial and 0.156 for human. The detector accurately identified it as AI-generated but with some uncertainty.

The fake painting of a sailboat was correctly caught by Hugging Face’s algorithm. The artificial score was 0.981 and the human 0.019. The detector matched Hive Moderation’s probability calculation.

It was also right about the photograph of the elephant figurines. SDXL Detector marked it as human by a score of 1, leaving no chance of it being artificial.

Illuminarty correctly spotted the AI images but thought the real photo was artificial, too. Let’s break down the results.

The cat and butterfly got the highest probability score: 89.3 percent. The detector is programmed to identify AI-generated images through their flaws, and it did quite well with this picture.

It was less confident, however, when it came to the AI artwork of a sailboat. The strokes and textures are convincing enough to give the detector pause but not fool it completely. It got a probability score of 78.5 percent.

But then Illuminarty was 77.7 percent sure that the photograph of the elephants was AI-generated.

This goes to show that even the best AI image detectors aren’t perfect. They can make mistakes depending on a picture's subject and characteristics.

AI or Not offers much simpler results. There are no probability percentages, just the likelihood of an image being AI or human.

When tested with the AI images, it correctly classified the cat and butterfly as artificial. The sailboat, however, tricked the detector and passed as human-generated.

Unfortunately, AI or Not struggles to process real photos and artworks, but when it does, it accurately identifies them as human-made.

What this experiment demonstrates is that some AI image detectors are still works in progress, while others are already extremely reliable in spotting fake pictures. While Hive Moderation and Hugging Face’s SDXL Detector are the most accurate, don’t discount the handiness of AI or Not as its software develops.

The best way to spot and avoid AI-generated images, especially as they become more and more realistic, is to have multiple detectors analyze them. Pick at least two that you trust, and don’t fall for a fake picture again.

Why is looking at a solar eclipse dangerous without special glasses? Eye doctors explain.

The solar eclipse will be visible for millions of Americans on April 8, 2024, making many excited to see it — but how you watch it matters, since it can be dangerous for your eyes. 

A  solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's light . When the moon blocks some of the sun, it's a partial solar eclipse, but when moon lines up with the sun, blocking all of its light, a total solar eclipse occurs,  NASA explains . Either way, you need eye protection when viewing.

"The solar eclipse will be beautiful, so I hope that everyone experiences it — but they need to experience it in the right way," said Dr. Jason P. Brinton, an ophthalmologist and medical director at Brinton Vision in St. Louis.

Here's what to know to stay safe.

Why is looking at a solar eclipse dangerous?

Looking at the sun — even when it's partially covered like during an eclipse — can cause eye damage.

There is no safe dose of solar ultraviolet rays or infrared radiation, said  Dr. Yehia Hashad , an ophthalmologist, retinal specialist and the chief medical officer at eye health company Bausch + Lomb.

"A very small dose could cause harm to some people," he said. "That's why we say the partial eclipse could also be damaging. And that's why we protect our eyes with the partial as well as with the full sun."

Some say that during a total eclipse, it's safe to view the brief period time when the moon completely blocks the sun without eye protection. But experts warn against it. 

"Totality of the eclipse lasts only about 1 to 3 minutes based on geographic location, and bright sunlight suddenly can appear as the moon continues to move," notes an eclipse viewing guide published in JAMA , adding, "even a few seconds of viewing the sun during an eclipse" can temporarily or permanently damage your vision. 

Do I need special glasses for eclipse viewing?

Yes.  Eclipse glasses are needed to protect your eyes if you want to look at the eclipse.

Regular sunglasses aren't protective enough for eclipse viewing — even if you stack more than one. 

"There's no amount of sunglasses that people can put on that will make up for the filtering that the ISO standard filters and the eclipse glasses provide," Brinton said.

You also shouldn't look at the eclipse through a camera lens, phone, binoculars or telescope, according to NASA, even while wearing eclipse glasses. The solar rays can burn through the lens and cause serious eye injury.

Eclipse glasses must comply with the  ISO 12312-2 international safety standard , according to NASA, and should have an "ISO" label printed on them to show they comply. The American Astronomical Society  has a list  of approved solar viewers.

Can't find these, or they're sold out near you? You can also  make homemade viewers ,   which allow you to observe the eclipse indirectly — just don't accidentally look at the sun while using one.

How to keep kids safe during the solar eclipse

Since this eclipse is expected to occur around the time of dismissal for many schools across the country, it may be tempting for students to view it without the proper safety precautions while getting to and from their buses. That's why some school districts are  canceling classes early so kids can enjoy the event safely with their families.

Dr. Avnish Deobhakta, vitreoretinal surgeon at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary at Mount Sinai, said parents should also be careful because it can be difficult for children to listen or keep solar eclipse glasses on. 

"You want to actually, in my opinion, kind of avoid them even looking at the eclipse, if possible," he said. "Never look directly at the sun, always wear the right eclipse sunglasses if you are going to look at the sun and make sure that those are coming from a reliable source."

Brinton recommends everyone starts their eclipse "viewing" early, by looking at professional photos and videos of an eclipse online or visiting a local planetarium. 

That way, you "have an idea of what to expect," he said. 

He also recommends the foundation  Prevent Blindness , which has resources for families about eclipse safety.

What happens if you look at a solar eclipse without eclipse glasses?

While your eyes likely won't hurt in the moment if you look at the eclipse without protection, due to lowered brightness and where damage occurs in the eye, beware: The rays can still cause damage .

The harm may not be apparent immediately. Sometimes trouble starts to appear one to a few days following the event. It could affect just one or both eyes.

And while some will regain normal visual function, sometimes the damage is permanent. 

"Often there will be some recovery of the vision in the first few months after it, but sometimes there is no recovery and sometimes there's a degree to which it is permanent," Brinton said. 

How long do you have to look at the eclipse to damage your eyes?

Any amount of time looking at the eclipse without protection is too long, experts say. 

"If someone briefly looks at the eclipse, if it's extremely brief, in some cases there won't be damage. But damage can happen even within a fraction of a second in some cases," Brinton said. He said he's had patients who have suffered from solar retinopathy, the official name for the condition.

Deobhakta treated a patient who watched the 2017 solar eclipse for 20 seconds without proper eye protection. She now has permanent damage in the shape of a crescent that interferes with her vision. 

"The crescent that is burned into the retina, the patient sees as black in her visual field," he said. "The visual deficit that she has will never go away."

Signs and symptoms of eye damage following an eclipse viewing include headaches, blurred vision, dark spots, changes to how you see color, lines and shapes. 

Unfortunately, there isn't a treatment for solar retinopathy.

"Seeing an eye care professional to solidify the diagnosis and for education I think is reasonable," Brinton said, but added, "right now there is nothing that we do for this. Just wait and give it time and the body does tend to heal up a measure of it."
