How to Start a Global Statement Essay

At the beginning of any essay, a writer needs to "hook" the reader. If the first few sentences do not grab the reader's attention, she will stop reading. A global statement is the group of sentences in the opening paragraph of an essay that act as an attention-grabber and a statement of purpose for your writing. Just as important as the "hook," though, is choosing a topic you care about, because if you do not care about the subject, neither will your audience.

Take notes about what is meaningful about the paper, both for you and a general audience to gauge the strength of the topic. For instance, if you are writing about a voyage you took through the Sahara desert that changed your life, ask what really happened on the trip that made you change. Point out how the trip forced you to reconsider endurance and perseverance, for example.

Address the main ideas of the essay by discussing the main points you intend to make to your reader in the first few statements of your essay. If you are writing a persuasive essay about the positive influence of peace parades, point out at least three reasons in the statement that reflect the power of the events. For instance, peace marches promote community action, conflict-resolution and power in numbers.

Articulate your vision for the essay by writing a sentence that sums up the main point of your writing.

Funnel the concept by imagining that the introductory essay is a funnel into which you are pouring your essay. Each sentence should transition from a broader concept to a more narrow one. At the "tip" of the introduction paragraph, move to the most specific sentence. Use a transitional phrase, such as "therefore, in this essay, or in general" to move to the thesis statement.

Write the thesis by composing an articulate sentence that clarifies the points you will address and ushers the reader into the essay. Go into more detail about your topic and the basic answers to why your topic is important to you.

“global” summary versus “selective” summary.

A “global” summary includes all of the main ideas from an article. A “selective” summary identifies specific information within an article about one specific topic and summarize only that information. This “selective” sort of summarizing closely resembles one of the ways sources are used in research writing. Writing a selective summary, therefore, will help prepare you for using sources in any type of research paper you might write.

Steps in writing a Selective Summary by Yourself

  • Read the article carefully and take notes in your own words.
  • Identify (underline, highlight, etc.) the information that you have been asked to select.
  • Paraphrase the information, summarizing “chunks” (sections) of text when appropriate.
  • Arrange the information in a logical order.

Two formats for introducing a selective summary

Imagine you are writing a selective summary for the example assignment: Summarize only the information about what Gambino says about why people use devices to connect with each other.

The introduction of a selective summary includes:

  • the overall main idea of the article and immediately after this general overview,
  • the next sentence indicates the narrower scope, (for this example assignment below, the information related to why people use these devices .)

Two-Sentence Format

In (title of article), (author’s name) (date) discusses (article thesis). (sentence about narrowed topic)

Three-Sentence Format

(Name of author) + (article topic) + (“title of article.”) The second sentence explains the author’s thesis. The third sentence is about the narrowed topic.

Example 1 : Megan Gambino (2010) writes about the positive impacts of technology on relationships in “How Technology Makes Us Better Social Beings.” Gambino explains how the use of portable devices allows people to connect more conveniently and frequently with existing friends and to build new relationships. More specifically, Gambino identifies several reasons people are increasingly using mobile devices to connect with others in addition to, and sometimes in place of, face-to-face interactions.

Example 2 : In “How Technology Makes Us Better Social Beings,” Megan Gambino (2010) writes about the positive impacts of technology on relationships. Gambino explains how the use of portable devices allows people to connect more conveniently and frequently with existing friends and to build new relationships. More specifically, Gambino identifies several reasons people are increasingly using mobile devices to connect with others in addition to, and sometimes in place of, face-to-face interactions.

EXERCISE: Analyze the formats above.

  • How should the author’s name be written? Which name comes first?
  • What immediately follows the author’s name?
  • Which words are capitalized in the title?
  • Why is this title in quotation marks? (Hint: What type of source is it? What type of source is italicized ? What type of source is expressed in quotation marks “ “?)
  • What verb tense is used to express the main idea?
  • What’s the difference between the longer and shorter formats? What’s the advantage of using each one?

Example Selective Summary

Read the example below. The topic the writer has narrowed to is the efforts colleges have been making to support international students. 

Selective Summary of “U.S. Colleges Focus on Making International Students Feel at Home.”

According to Michael Sewall (2010) in “U.S. Colleges Focus on Making International Students Feel at Home” colleges are helping international students join the campus community. Sewall highlights how universities have created new social programs and university courses to help assist new international students transition to life in the United States.

One strategy Sewall examines is how colleges are trying to connect international students with the local community. This has been done primarily by connecting these students with host families and local volunteer opportunities. In addition, Sewall describes universities’ efforts to help international students integrate into campus life by matching them with domestic students. Administrators recognize that building personal connections and friendships helps international students adapt culturally and linguistically. Finally, Sewall explains how colleges are creating courses and programs that familiarize international students with American culture. Special courses with global or cultural themes have been developed and are sometimes required. Some courses involve assignments which entail interaction between American students and international students. Sewall stresses that these efforts will help not only international students but their American counterparts as well.

U.S. Colleges Focus on Making International Students Feel at Home

When Ivan Sekyonda, a 23-year-old student from Uganda, came to study in the United States, he felt lonely. After all, his native country wasn’t well represented at Binghamton University. But he eventually made friends, including American and international students, and he became more comfortable on the campus. He gives credit to Binghamton’s international-student office.

“The orientation staff made us feel welcome and made it easy to understand what was going on,” says Mr. Sekyonda, a rising senior studying computer engineering. “They knew we were probably experiencing some culture shock and feeling a bit homesick, and they were willing to work with us and be patient with us.”

For colleges focused on internationalizing their student bodies, like Binghamton, getting foreign students onto their campuses is only half the battle. If these students end up socializing and studying only with one another, administrators say, then they—and the colleges’ American students—don’t benefit much from the experience.

“If you want to be international at all, you’ve got to be thinking holistically,” says Allan E. Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education. “It really is a continuous process of checking in with international students and making sure they’re not in over their heads.”

To ensure that international students are well integrated into campus life, colleges have been putting more effort into orientation as well as social and academic programming that engages all students on campus.

“The challenge is to encourage those students to break out of their comfort level and explore the university dynamic,” says Ellen H. Badger, director of international student and scholar services at Binghamton, which has won an award for its campus-internationalization efforts. “But integration doesn’t need to be forced—it’s happening throughout campus every day.”

Connecting With the Community

All institutions face the challenge of bringing foreign students into the fold, but this can be particularly difficult for community colleges. It can be hard to integrate a campus where students commute in, go to their classes, and then return to work or families.

Some community colleges have handled this by focusing on off-campus activities. Northcentral Technical College, in Wisconsin, runs a program in which 41 families have agreed to act as mentors for international students. Another 19 families host students in their homes. If a mentor family is going on a picnic or to a baseball game, the family can call Northcentral’s international office and invite students to join in.

Bonnie Bissonette, the associate dean of business and international education at Northcentral, says the college also encourages international students to do volunteer work, starting at orientation, and these efforts help increase their confidence.

“We use a strong web of support for our students,” Ms. Bissonette says. “Right away they learn that by volunteering and getting out in the community, it helps them make connections with people.”

Erode Laborde came to Northcentral from Haiti last year and is studying small-business management at the college. Although Mr. Laborde says he was worried at first about coming to the United States, he adjusted by getting involved right away in a variety of activities. He joined the college’s business and international clubs, and he has volunteered for more than 250 hours in the community. Those connections helped him find emotional support and raise money when an earthquake ravaged his home country in January.

“Even though it was really hard in Haiti, and there was a lot of emotion, there was a lot of support from the community here,” he says. “Coming here and seeing how people got along with us—it was amazing.”  

Making a Match

Michael Adams, president of Fairleigh Dickinson University, has frequently spoken about the need to do a better job of integrating international students on campus. When American students study abroad, colleges expect them to learn a lot both in and out of the classroom, Mr. Adams says. “We need to apply that same mind-set for the students we have coming here,” he says.

“Too many institutions have looked at foreign students as sources of revenue,” he adds. “But if you’re there to prepare people for this next generation of leadership, they need to know people. And there are informal ways to do that.”

Fairleigh Dickinson’s Office of Global Learning was designed, in part, to address this challenge. One program, called the Global Enterprise Network, provides training and internships for international graduate students who want to learn about business development.

Some colleges also have created programs in which American students are matched up with international students to help them hone their English skills and introduce them to campus life.

Binghamton University offers such a matching program, as well as one that pairs native English speakers with students who speak English as a second language.

“This allows international students to further their English skills on one side and [for each] to learn more about the [other’s] culture,” says Rebecca Johnson, a Binghamton senior from Delaware who participated in the ESL program.

The University of California at Los Angeles, which enrolled about 5,000 international students this past academic year, offers a “global-siblings” program that allows domestic students to function as both resources and friends to international classmates.

Uniting Cultures

Some campuses are creating course work specifically for international students, or to bring them together on projects with their American counterparts.

During the last academic year, the University of Southern California began offering a course called “The United States: An American Culture Series,” which teaches foreign students about food, customs, and lingo.

A criminal-justice professor at Northcentral Technical College asks his students to develop a project comparing U.S. laws with those in another country. He encourages students to find someone on campus who is from their assigned country and simply get to know that person as a way to learn about the laws there.

Still, integrating the classroom isn’t easy, especially in science and technology fields, in which many international students are enrolled.

“Students in these fields are very driven and focused, and so are the Americans,” says Mr. Goodman, of the Institute of International Education. “It’s possible a lot of students are clustered in labs doing what they came here to do and doing a very good job at it, but it may be more difficult for that integrated learning experience.”

Binghamton has been working on that kind of integration for the past 15 years, ever since the university made internationalization part of its strategic planning. Among the changes during that time: doubling international enrollment; requiring that all undergraduates take global-proficiency courses; and adding a host of other programs focused on integrating international students into campus life.

“It’s important to attract students based on their intellectual interests and not just cultural ones,” Ms. Badger says. “If you’re truly internationalizing your campus, the communication is going in both directions. You are integrating domestic students into the international students’ culture as well.”

Mr. Sekyonda, the Ugandan student, has taken advantage of Binghamton’s programs. He volunteers at a local library, serves as the secretary for the National Society of Black Engineers at Binghamton, and participates in the African Student Organization and Bard in the Yard, a student group that performs Shakespeare productions.

Last fall, Mr. Sekyonda volunteered during the international-student orientation, sharing his experiences to help other students transition to the United States. The integration has gone so well, he says, that “students don’t even realize I’m international.”

Essays are one of the best parts of the college application process. With your grades in, your test scores decided, and your extracurriculars developed over your years in high school, your essays are the last piece of your college application that you have immediate control over. With them, you get to add a voice to your other stats, a “face” to the name, so to speak. They’re an opportunity to reveal what’s important to you and what sets you apart from other applicants and tell the admissions committee why you’d be an excellent addition to their incoming student class.

Throughout your college applications process, there are many different types of essays you’ll be asked to write. Some of the most popular essay questions you’ll see might include writing about an extracurricular, why you want to matriculate at a school, and what you want to study.

Increasingly, you might also see a supplemental college essay asking you to discuss a political or global issue that you’re passionate about. Asking this type of question helps colleges understand what you care about outside of your personal life and how you will be an active global citizen.

Some examples from the 2019-2020 cycle include:

Tips for Writing the Political and Global Issues College Essay

Pick an issue close to your life.

When you first see a political and global issues prompt, your gut reaction might be to go with a big-picture topic that’s all over the news, like poverty or racism. The problem with these topics is that you usually have a page or less to talk about the issue and why it matters to you. Students also might not have a direct personal connection to such a broad topic. The goal of this essay is to reveal your critical thinking skills, but the higher-level goal of every college essay is to learn more about who you are.

Rather than go with a broad issue that you’re not personally connected to, see if there’s just one facet of it that you  can  contend with. This is especially important if the prompt simply asks for “an issue,” and not necessarily a “global issue.” While some essay prompts will specifically ask that you address a  global  issue (like Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service), there are still ways to approach it from a more focused perspective.

For example, if you were to talk about world hunger, you could start with the hunger you see in your community, which is a food desert. For your solution, you can discuss your plan to build a community garden, so the town is able to access fresh produce. Food deserts, of course, aren’t the only reason world hunger exists; so, you should also explore some other reasons, and other solutions. Maybe there is a better way to prevent and recuperate produce currently being wasted, for instance. If the prompt doesn’t specifically ask for a global issue, however, you could simply focus on food deserts.

For another example, maybe you want to talk about climate change. A more personal and focused approach would deal with happenings in your community, or a community you’ve had contact with. For instance, perhaps your local river was polluted because of textile industry waste; in this case, it would be fitting to address fast fashion specifically (which is still a global issue).

Remember your audience

As you’re approaching this essay, take care to understand the political ramifications of what you’re suggesting and how the school you’re addressing might react to it. Make sure you understand the school’s political viewpoints, and keep in mind that schools are hoping to see how you might fit on their campus based on your response.

So, if you’re applying to a school known for being progressive, like Oberlin or Amherst, you might not want to write an essay arguing that religious freedom is under threat in America. Or, if you’re applying to Liberty University, you should probably avoid writing an essay with a strong pro-LGBTQ stance. You don’t have to take the opposite position, but try picking a different issue that won’t raise the same concerns.

If you have no political alignment, choose economics

If you find yourself applying to a school with which you share no political viewpoints, you might want to consider if the school would even be a good fit for you. Why do you really want to go there? Are those reasons worth it? If you think so, consider writing about an economic issue, which tend to be less contentious than social issues.

For instance, you could write about the impact of monopolies because your parents own an independent bookstore that has been affected by Amazon. Or you could discuss tax breaks for companies that keep or move their production domestically, after seeing how your town changed when factories were moved abroad. Maybe tax filing is a cause you’re really passionate about, and you think the government should institute a free electronic system for all. No matter what you write about here, the key is to keep it close to home however you can.

Pick the best possible framing

When you’re writing an essay that doesn’t fully align with the political views of the school you’re applying to, you’ll want to minimize the gap between your viewpoint and that of the school. While they still might disagree with your views, this will give your essay (and therefore you) the best possible chance. Let’s say you’re applying to a school with progressive economic views, while you firmly believe in free markets. Consider these two essay options:

Option 1:  You believe in free markets because they have pulled billions out of terrible poverty in the developing world.

Option 2:  “Greed is good,” baby! Nothing wrong with the rich getting richer.

Even if you believe equally in the two reasons above personally, essay option 1 would be more likely to resonate with an admissions committee at a progressive school.

Let’s look at another, more subtle example:

Option 1:  Adding 500 police officers to the New York City public transit system to catch fare evaders allows officers to unfairly and systematically profile individuals based on their race.

Option 2:  The cost of hiring 500 additional police officers in the New York City public transit system is higher than the money that would be recouped by fare evasion.

While you might believe both of these things, a school that places a lower priority on race issues may respond better to the second option’s focus on the fallible economics of the issue.

Structuring the Essay

Depending on how long the essay prompt is, you’ll want to use your time and word count slightly differently. For shorter essays (under 250 words), focus on your personal connection rather than the issue itself. You don’t have much space and you need to make it count. For standard essays (250-500 words), you can spend about half the time on the issue and half the time on your personal connection. This should allow you to get more into the nuance. For longer essays, you can write more on the issue itself. But remember, no matter how long the essay is, they ultimately want to learn about you–don’t spend so much time on the issue that you don’t bring it back to yourself.

Tips for Writing Your Thesis Statement

1. Determine what kind of paper you are writing:

  • An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.
  • An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience.
  • An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided.

If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader.

2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.

3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.

4. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper.

How to Write an Essay About Global Warming

If you've been assigned an essay about global warming, you'll be needing to focus on the burning issues this topic raises, as well as demonstrating various writing techniques. In the context of academic writing, your global warming essay may be written in three main composition genres: argumentative, problem solving and expository. This article will show you how to combine these essay types within one, allowing you to cover the topic at length.

Before you start writing…

Step 1 Narrow down the topic, making it sound more precise.

  • The greenhouse effect and global warming
  • Global warming: real challenge or far-fetched issue?
  • Global warming: mechanism of action
  • Is it possible to reverse global warming?
  • What caused global warming?
  • And so forth.

Step 2 Study the topic.

  • Stick to a certain number of reliable sources. Don’t confuse the essay with a research paper, where you would need to cite dozens of references. Writing a composition, limit yourself to five if possible, or a maximum of 10 sources.
  • Narrow down the allowable sources. Many teachers view some websites with some skepticism and wouldn’t want you to cite them. Instead, you may be recommended to use printed sources. Ask if your teacher hasn't already made this clear.
  • Choose reliable sources, scientific journals or government supported websites. For example: climate.nasa.gov, nrmsc.usgs.gov, epa.gov, etc.
  • Write down facts, figures, statistics or other accurate data that will serve as strong arguments to support your statement.
  • Consider the evidences that are at odds with the view you adhere to. For example, if you are aimed at expanding on the global warming problem, you can’t ignore information saying that our planet faces an opposed process – global cooling. Further, these arguments will come into play and help you reach the appropriate conclusion.
  • Don’t forget to note the information needed for designing the bibliography. Doing so, bear in mind the required reference format (MLA, APA, Turabian, Chicago, etc.) assigned to you by your teacher.

Step 3 Unscramble your ideas.

  • Write a mind map. Suppose you need to cover the topic “Effects of Global Warming”. Put the theme in the center and briefly list the most burning consequences.
  • Proceeding from the scientific data you have collected, come up with your original ideas. For instance, if you dwell on the impact of global warming on ice caps, you may suggest a scenario provided that the ablation isn’t stopped.

Step 4 Craft your thesis statement.

  • If you can incorporate all ideas within one extended sentence, you will get a powerful statement. For example: Global warming is just a fanciful problem invented to suppress substantial challenges that constitute a real threat for humanity.
  • Irrespective of the way you formulate the topic, global warming is a pressing issue, and it shouldn’t leave the reader feeling indifferent. Thus, your thesis statement should provoke feedback and come across as challenging. For instance: Lifestyle change is the most considerable contribution to global warming problem treatment.

Implement your ideas in the text

Step 1 Write a head-turning introduction.

You may get a glimpse of the future and come up with a scene that depicts the potential dire consequences of global warming.
  • Use the techniques applied in an expository essay to explain what global warming is about. Utilize figures and statistics that could not be bettered to speak about the seriousness of the problem.
  • Be specific and don’t waffle, since the core of the matter you are to develop in the body of the essay.

Step 2 Cut to the chase and write the body.

It will definitely strengthen your arguments: Look out of the window! It is mid-January, but instead of snow banks, there is mud and drizzling rain. Isn’t it a vivid demonstration of global warming?
  • Suggest solutions to the problem. People like happy endings, where the good always wins. Similarly, there are sure to be methods to reverse global warming. And they do exist. Provide the ways to handle the problem that, in the first place, are within power of every person. After all, to change the world, one should start with himself/herself.

Step 3 Conclude the essay.

  • Go back to the thesis statement. It is known that repetition has a powerful effect, though, you shouldn’t reword thesis statement. Instead, paraphrase it, keeping its primary meaning intact. For instance, instead of saying "Lifestyle change is the most considerable contribution to global warming problem treatment", write "Having changed our social behavior and consumer attitude to nature, we can reverse global warming problem".

How to Write a Great Personal Statement for the Global MPH

The same principle applies to your personal statement for the Global Master of Public Health (MPH) program . This personal statement is a chance to make the case that you belong at Imperial. Making that case clearly and effectively can be as important as your academic and professional qualifications.

Many students get anxious about this portion of the application, or worry that their writing skills aren’t up to the task. Our advice? Don’t panic!

You don’t have to be an outstanding writer to craft a great personal statement. Your task is to provide Imperial’s reviewers with the information they’re looking for in 1500 words or less. Let’s break the key points down into three specific areas: your past, present, and future.

1. Past: your background in public health

Start by introducing yourself. You’ve already provided a CV with your application, so this is an opportunity to put your experience in context. Tell us how and why you became interested in public health, the skills you’ve developed, and what you’re most proud of in your studies and career. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through!

Finally, show that you have a specific vision for your time at Imperial and your post-MPH career. Include a short proposal (150 words or less) for a research project that you would be interested in carrying out as part of your dissertation over approximately a three month period. This gives the team more of an idea of your research interests and motivation to undertake the online Global MPH program. Getting started can often be difficult. Even professional writers say that the hardest part of writing is the beginning. Writing an introduction to an essay can therefore seem a daunting task, though it need not be so difficult, as long as you understand the purpose and the structure of the introduction. An example essay has been given to help you understand both of these, and there is a checklist at the end which you can use for editing your introduction.

Purpose of the introduction

When writing an introduction to an academic essay, it is useful to remember the main purpose of the introduction. In general, the introduction will introduce the topic to the reader by stating what the topic is and giving some general background information. This will help the reader to understand what you are writing about, and show why the topic is important. The introduction should also give the overall plan of the essay.

In short, the main purpose of the introduction is to:

  • introduce the topic of the essay;
  • give a general background of the topic;
  • indicate the overall plan of the essay.

This last purpose is perhaps the most important, and is the reason why many writers choose to write the introduction last , after they have written the main body , because they need to know what the essay will contain before they can give a clear plan.

Structure of the introduction

Although essays vary in length and content, most essays will have the same overall structure, including the introduction. The structure is related to the purpose mentioned above. The introduction to an essay should have the following two parts:

  • general statements (to introduce the topic and give the background);
  • a thesis statement (to show the structure).

General statements

The general statements will introduce the topic of the essay and give background information. The background information for a short essay will generally just be one or two sentences. The general statements should become more and more specific thesis statement , which is the most specific sentence of the introduction--> as the introduction progresses, leading the reader into the essay (some writers talk about "attracting the readers' attention", though for an academic essay, this is less important). For longer essays, the general statements could include one or more definitions , or could classify the topic, and may cover more than one paragraph.

The following is an example of background statements for a short essay ( given below ):

Although they were invented almost a hundred years ago, for decades cars were only owned by the rich. Since the 60s and 70s they have become increasingly affordable, and now most families in developed nations, and a growing number in developing countries, own a car.

These sentences introduce the topic of the essay (cars) and give some background to this topic (situation in the past, the situation now). These sentences lead nicely into the thesis statement (see below).

Thesis statement

The thesis statement is the most important part of the introduction. It gives the reader clear information about the content of the essay, which will help them to understand the essay more easily. The thesis states the specific topic, and often lists the main (controlling) ideas that will be discussed in the main body. It may also indicate how the essay will be organised, e.g. in chronological order, order of importance, advantages/disadvantages, cause/effect. It is usually at the end of the introduction, and is usually (but not always) one sentence long.

In short, the thesis statement:

  • states the specific topic of the essay;
  • often lists the main (controlling) ideas of the essay;
  • may indicate the method of organisation of the essay;
  • is usually at the end of the introduction;
  • is usually one sentence.

Here is an example of a thesis statement with no subtopics mentioned:

While cars have undoubted advantages, they also have significant drawbacks.

This thesis statement tells us the specific topic of the essay (advantages and disadvantages of cars) and the method of organisation (advantages should come first, disadvantages second). It is, however, quite general, and may have been written before the writer had completed the essay.

In the following thesis statement, the subtopics are named:

While cars have undoubted advantages, of which their convenience is the most apparent, they have significant drawbacks, most notably pollution and traffic problems.

This thesis gives us more detail, telling us not just the topic (advantages and disadvantages of cars) and the method of organisation (advantages first, disadvantages second), but also tells us the main ideas in the essay (convenience, pollution, traffic problems). This essay will probably have three paragraphs in the main body.

Example essay

Below is a discussion essay which looks at the advantages and disadvantages of car ownership. This essay is used throughout the essay writing section to help you understand different aspects of essay writing. Here it focuses on the thesis statement and general statements of the introduction (mentioned on this page), topic sentences , controlling ideas, and the summary and final comment of the conclusion. The most striking advantage of the car is its convenience. When travelling long distance, there may be only one choice of bus or train per day, which may be at an unsuitable time. The car, however, allows people to travel at any time they wish, and to almost any destination they choose. Despite this advantage, cars have many significant disadvantages, the most important of which is the pollution they cause. Almost all cars run either on petrol or diesel fuel, both of which are fossil fuels. Burning these fuels causes the car to emit serious pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide. Not only are these gases harmful for health, causing respiratory disease and other illnesses, they also contribute to global warming, an increasing problem in the modern world. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists (2013), transportation in the US accounts for 30% of all carbon dioxide production in that country, with 60% of these emissions coming from cars and small trucks. In short, pollution is a major drawback of cars. A further disadvantage is the traffic problems that they cause in many cities and towns of the world. While car ownership is increasing in almost all countries of the world, especially in developing countries, the amount of available roadway in cities is not increasing at an equal pace. This can lead to traffic congestion, in particular during the morning and evening rush hour. In some cities, this congestion can be severe, and delays of several hours can be a common occurrence. Such congestion can also affect those people who travel out of cities at the weekend. Spending hours sitting in an idle car means that this form of transport can in fact be less convenient than trains or aeroplanes or other forms of public transport. In conclusion, while the car is advantageous for its convenience , it has some important disadvantages, in particular the pollution it causes and the rise of traffic jams . If countries can invest in the development of technology for green fuels, and if car owners can think of alternatives such as car sharing, then some of these problems can be lessened.

The statement of purpose (also known as a statement of intent or motivation letter) is your chance to stand out from the crowd and showcase your motivation, skills and potential. It should:

  • Demonstrate why you’d be a good fit for the program

The torment of the Founding Fathers is responsible for my interest in Classics. My desire to learn Latin stemmed from reading American Revolutionary-era history during junior high and high school, and particularly from the countless Latin quotations I found in John Adams’ writings. Always eager for a challenge, I was intrigued by the American founders’ accounts of the torture of learning such a difficult language. In my first semester at university, I started learning Latin and thoroughly loved it. As I learned more and more about classical civilization through the language, I realized that I was passionately interested in many aspects of the field of Classics. I have since taken courses on mythology, art and archaeology, and religion, on ancient history, and on the classical tradition. I have also learned Greek, of course, starting with an intensive two-semester course at the university’s summer school. My experience studying abroad in Florence and traveling through Italy and Greece intensified my zeal for the field and, in particular, fueled my ambition to specialize in classical archaeology.

My personal philosophy of life is that everything is connected, and this conviction drives my desire to study Classics. The most rewarding moments for me are discovering and investigating connections – both broad ones, between fields and disciplines, and more specific ones, like the relationship between a piece of literature and an object of material culture. My liberal arts education has equipped me with a broad base of knowledge in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and arts, and in the honors program I pursued independent projects exploring academic and personal connections, including a paper on ancient Mayan astronomy, a self-observation study on the effects of nutrition and hydration on exercise performance, and a paper on the influence of political context on the changing artistic representations of John Adams. By seeking out connections between seemingly unrelated areas of academia, I have acquired a well-rounded outlook which helps me approach new ideas with both a range of prior experiences and a mind always open to different interpretations.

In accordance with my personal philosophy, I have also continued to explore connections within Classics and between Classics and other fields. In 2007, I published an article in my university’s undergraduate humanities journal; inspired by my studies in Florence, I compared representations of the birth of Venus in ancient and Renaissance literature and art. My major academic achievement to date, however, has been my senior honor thesis on John Adams’ connection to the Classics. Funded by a Hilldale Research Fellowship, I conducted research in the Adams Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society and in John Adams’ personal library at the Boston Public Library on the influence of the classical tradition on Adams’ worldview and how he consciously modeled himself on classical ideals. It was particularly fulfilling to connect historical and classical research in writing about the figure most responsible for instigating my study of the Classics.

As well as my research skills, I have demonstrated proficiency in the classical languages, winning prizes for both Latin and Greek translation from the Classics Department, as well as receiving an enthusiastic nomination from the department for the Pearson Fellowship from the American Philological Association. I am also the president of the undergraduate Classics Society, which allows me to share my enthusiasm for Classics with other students and the larger community.

One of the most appealing aspects of studying Classics is the vast range of topics encompassed by the field. Because my interests are broad and I value an interdisciplinary approach, I would like to pursue graduate study ultimately leading to a PhD in Classical Archaeology. Archaeology in itself is, of course, a multi-faceted field, requiring knowledge of history, language, anthropology, and various scientific and technological methods. I have already started building my skills in this area: I participated in a microartifact analysis from the excavation of a Maya site in Belize as part of an honors project, and this summer I will take part in two archaeological projects in Turkey after working as a research assistant on related material in the spring semester. This PhD program includes many other opportunities I am eager to explore, such as palaeography and papyrology courses, and especially the variety of fieldwork and museum experiences available. I believe that my strong background in the classical languages and wide range of courses on classical civilization and archaeological methods have prepared me well for this program, and I am convinced that, guided by my philosophy of interconnectedness, I will flourish in this program.

The first step is to read the application instructions. These should include the length of the document (usually 1-2 pages), any formatting requirements, and often a question or prompt that indicates what you should focus on.

In some cases, you might also be asked to submit a personal statement . Similar advice applies to both of these documents—both should give a sense of who you are, what you’ve done and what you want to do. But a statement of purpose is often more formal, tightly focused on your academic background and your suitability for the program.

If you are working on multiple applications, don’t try to write a one-size-fits-all text—tailor your statement of purpose to each program. Make sure to respond to the prompt and include all the information you’re asked for. A typical statement of purpose prompt looks like this:

Your focus will be slightly different depending on whether you’re applying for research-based academic programs (such as a PhD ) or professional qualifications (such as an MBA). But all statements of purpose should contain the following elements.

Academic and personal background

Give an overview of your academic background, and show what drives your interest in this field or profession. You might want to include some personal background too—your family history, social circumstances, personal relationships and life experiences have all shaped your trajectory and perspective. What unique insights will you bring with you?

Characteristics and personality

Think about aspects of your character that make you well-suited for graduate school. Don’t just list generic adjectives—give examples that demonstrate your strengths and show why they’re relevant.

  • Are you organized enough to handle a high-pressure workload?
  • Do you have the creativity needed to develop original ideas, or a systematic mindset perfect for problem-solving?
  • Do you have strong leadership skills, or are you great at working collaboratively?

Avoid including irrelevant autobiographical detail in the statement of purpose. Everything you include should be aimed at showing why you’d be a strong candidate for the program.

Your experience shows that you have the necessary skills to succeed in graduate school. Don’t just summarize everything you’ve done—pick out some highlights to build a clear picture of your strengths and priorities, illustrating how you’ve learned and developed along the way.

Academic experience

If you’re applying for a research-focused program, such as a PhD, show your knowledge of the field and outline your research experience. This might include:

  • A brief summary of your thesis or final project
  • Courses that you found particularly valuable

  • The next step you want to take in your career. What position are you aiming for and how will the program help you achieve it?
  • Your motivations for a career change. Can you make a link between your previous experience and your new direction?
  • Your long-term goals. Where do you want to be in five or ten years, and how do you see yourself getting there?

The admissions committee wants to know that you’re genuinely motivated to complete the program, and the clearer your plans, the more convincing your commitment.

It’s important to show not only why you want to study this subject, but also why you want to do it in this particular institution and department.

  • Do your research, and mention particular classes, specialisms or faculty that attracted you.
  • Show why you’re a good fit. Do your priorities align with the values and culture of the institution? What will you contribute to the department?
  • Discuss the specific skills, knowledge and experience you expect to get from the program.

The statement of purpose isn’t only about selling yourself—it’s about illustrating an ideal match between you and the program.

Once you’ve made sure to cover all the key elements, you can work on strengthening and polishing the text. Follow these tips to make your application the best it can be.

Stay focused

It can be tempting to try to cram in everything you’ve done, but a good statement of purpose requires careful selection to craft a focused narrative. One way to do this is by building your text around a central theme—for example, a character trait, an intellectual interest, or a career goal.

This strategy helps structure your text and puts your priorities centre stage. Link each paragraph back to the central idea, making it clear how everything fits together.

Think about your structure

The structure of a statement of purpose is somewhat flexible, as long as you include all the relevant information in an order that makes sense.

For example, you might start with a chronological story of where your interests began, or you might open with your goals and then select a series of examples that show your capacity to achieve them. If you’re desperate to study in this specific program, you could lead with a summary of why it’s your ideal choice, and then elaborate on each aspect to show why you’re a perfect fit.

The important thing is that the text showcases your strengths and motivations in a compelling, coherent way. Global warming is a complex problem that often sparks policy debates. When writing about it, stick to the facts and make sure that your thesis statement -- the central assertion of your essay -- is supported by research. Some global warming topics have produced extensive research worldwide and can serve as topical guides in formulating your thesis statement.

Manmade Causes versus Natural Causes

The causes of global warming are complex, including natural and man-made emissions of carbon dioxide and methane. Use your thesis to highlight the difference between natural sources and man-made sources. For example, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere have risen from 280 parts per million in the 18th century to 390 parts per million in 2010. Human activities release more than 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, or 135 times as much as volcanoes. Focus your thesis on this discrepancy, how man-made carbon dioxide sources such as fossil fuel consumption, have eclipsed natural sources of the gas.

Rising Temperatures and Declining Sea Ice

Your thesis statement may focus on the relationship between rising surface temperatures and declining sea ice, specifically ice in the Arctic. For instance, since 1901, sea surface temperatures have risen at an average rate of 0.13 degrees Fahrenheit per decade, with the highest rates of change occurring in the past three decades alone, according to the EPA.

Your thesis may establish the inverse relationship between these rising surface temperatures and the shrinking ice coverage in the Arctic. Arctic sea ice extent in December 2014, for instance, was the ninth lowest in the satellite record. The rate of decline for December ice alone is 3.4 percent per decade, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Effects of Melting Glaciers on Water Supply

Along with sea ice, many of the world’s glaciers are melting due to climate change. Since the 1960s, the U.S. Geological Survey has tracked the mass of two glaciers in Alaska and one in Washington state, all three of which have shrunk considerably in the past 40 years.

Research other mountain ranges and compare the glaciological data. Use your thesis to answer the question of what melting glaciers will mean for populations dependent on the ice flows for their fresh water supply. For example, much of Peru’s population depends on Andean glaciers not only for drinking water but for hydroelectricity.

Effects of Drought on Food Production

While global warming is projected to raise sea levels and flooding in coastal regions, it’s also been credited for changes in weather patterns and extreme drought, according to the EPA. In the arid American Southwest, for example, average annual temperatures have increased about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit over the past century, leading to decreased snowpack, extreme drought, wildfires and fierce competition for remaining water supplies.

As drought still rages in this region, your thesis can explore the relationship between global warming and agriculture, specifically in California’s Central Valley, which provides produce for much of the country. It’s possible that hotter, longer growing seasons are beneficial to California crops, but that shrinking water supplies threaten the viability of commercial agriculture.

Ocean Acidification and Global Seafood Stocks

Increased carbon dioxide emissions don't just impact our air quality. These emissions also result in increased acidity of our planet's oceans. An immense range of shellfish and other molluscs, such as clams, oysters, crabs, lobsters and more, face immediate population decline due to ocean acidification weakening their calcium carbonate shells.

Your thesis can explore the mechanics of ocean acidification as well as the potential economic impact to the fisheries that rely upon these marine animals for survival. You can also explore the potential ecosystem impact for the predators that feed upon these animals.

Severe natural disasters are brought about by global warming which has had dire effects on life and property. As long as mankind produces greenhouse gases, global warming will continue to accelerate. The consequences are felt at a much smaller scale which will increase to become drastic shortly. The power to save the day lies in the hands of humans, the need is to seize the day. Energy consumption should be reduced on an individual basis. Fuel-efficient cars and other electronics should be encouraged to reduce the wastage of energy sources.
