Blackboard: Clearing or deleting a Blackboard Assignment submission

Introduction.

You may find that you need to clear a submission made to a Blackboard Assignment link. For example, a student may have mistakenly submitted the wrong file.

Clearing an assignment

1.    In your course, go to the Control Panel > Full Grade Centre .

2.    Click on the downward grey chevron arrow icon in the right of the cell corresponding to the submission.

3.    Select View Grade Details .

4.    Select Clear Attempt in the bottom right of the page.

5.    Blackboard will issue a warning message reminding you that the submission cannot be recovered.  Click OK to delete the attempt.

You will see in the Grade Centre that the ‘Needs Grading’ icon has disappeared, indicating that the attempt has been deleted.

Submitted the wrong assignment early, Blackboard won't let me unsubmit, possibly will fail (also a rant about the Blackboard redesign)

This is probably lighter than most of the posts on the sub. But I just hate the Blackboard redesign - which I still have not gotten used to. It's confusing to navigate and it tries to straddle the line between being efficient and a pseudo-social media platform which it really is not. You can't print pages to PDF anymore. I miss the homepage where it conveniently had all your classes and the upcoming assignments on the same page. I don't know why it is trying to emulate Canvas so much when it has zero of the appeal. Canvas has its problems but at least its functional, even more so now. We can't even forget how awful the Blackboard app is compared to Canvas.

And now for the first part of the post - which is semi-related but not really. Just had a lot on my mind about this. Recently spent 2 whole hours doing a chicken dissection only for me to mistakenly do it on the wrong part of the chicken (needed a chicken leg quarter, only had a drum stick). However, I spent hours labelling everything and uploaded it - semi-confused but just satisfied with getting it done. Decided to email the Professor only to have me be greeted with the news that I just don't have the right parts. So cue me re-doing it all over again, buying a new chicken and missing out on some fun time with friends to do it. Two hours on a Friday night, 1.5-ish hours labelling it on a Saturday morning. Presented it on a Powerpoint and everything.

Only now that she made the assignment a one-and-done deal and you cannot re-submit, or even make a new comment on the assignment. I panic emailed her with the powerpoint (twice) and now I am just going to spend the entire weekend just waiting for things to roll over and hope for the best. It's stupid to not have an assignment be able to be re-submitted (unless it's a test) because now I am holed up in too much anxiety to do much and just hoping she accepts it. This is one whole day before the assignment is due (would have been two but I had to re-do it) but I have no idea if she would even accept it. Have no idea if she checks her email over the weekend. So now I just have to wait and see.

Tl:dr - just ranting about my current situation. Blackboard redesign has been bugging me for months ever since they changed it. And I may win the Darwin award for submitting the wrong assignment and Blackboard not allowing me to rectify the error.

Why can't I open my assignment?

For help with issues such as this one, you should contact your instructor or the help desk at your school. If you aren't sure how to contact the help desk, look for the technology office on your institution's website. You can also search the web for your institution's name + Blackboard + help or support . Also, make sure you use a supported internet browser and operating system for the version of Blackboard that your school uses.

Why can't I find my assignment?

Your instructor controls the date when assignments become available. You might also have to meet other criteria to access the assignment. For example, you might have to mark a lecture as reviewed first. Contact your instructor for more information.

How do I check that my assignment was submitted?

When you submit an assignment successfully, the Review Submission History page appears with information about your submitted assignment and a success message with a confirmation number. You can copy and save this number as proof of your submission. For assignments with multiple attempts, you receive a different number for each submission. If your institution has enabled email notifications for submission receipts, you'll also receive an email with your confirmation number and details each time you submit coursework.

You can access your submission receipts from the Submitted tab on the My Grades page. Select the number next to Submission Receipts at the bottom of the list to see your submission history.

You won't be able to view confirmation numbers or receive email submission receipts if your institution uses an older version of Blackboard Learn.

My instructor didn't receive my assignment. What do I do?

You must discuss this issue with your instructor.

How do I edit or resubmit an assignment?

You can't edit a submitted assignment, but you may be allowed to resubmit it. However, you can't resubmit all assignments. Check if you can submit an assignment more than once. If you can't and made a mistake, you must contact your instructor to ask for the opportunity to resubmit the assignment.

In the Original Course View, if your instructor allows you to submit an assignment more than once, a Start New function appears on the Review Submission History page. Select the assignment link in your course to access the Review Submission History page.

How do I know if my assignment has been graded?

Assignments aren't graded automatically. Your instructor must grade each assignment and post the grade and feedback.

The My Grades page displays all your grades. My Grades is often located on the course menu. The course menu appears on the left side of the course window. If My Grades isn't on the course menu, select Tools and select My Grades . If you submitted your assignment, but it's not graded, you'll see an exclamation mark next to the assignment's title.

If your assignment has been submitted and graded, the grade appears in the assignment's row. To view more detail, select the assignment's title to access the Review Submission History page.

Not exactly. Your instructor can create assignments for you to submit individually or as part of a group effort. You can do all of the same things with a group assignment as with a regular assignment. One member submits the group assignment for the entire group. The grade you receive is the same for all members of the group.

Dudley poised to assume historic leadership role in Gamecock Battalion

The army rotc program at usc welcomes its first female professor of military science.

The Army ROTC Gamecock Battalion, which has trained cadets at the University of South Carolina for nearly 50 years, is poised to make history. On Aug. 8, USC welcomes its first female ROTC commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lindsay Dudley.

Dudley has held a variety of roles over the past 16 years of her military career, including her work in human resources command at Fort Knox and her most recent role as a manpower and personnel director for Joint Task Force North at Fort Bliss. She has been deployed several times, supporting Operation Inherent Resolve in Qatar and Operation Spartan Shield in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Dudley holds a Master of Human Resources from Webster University, a master’s in military operational arts and sciences from the U.S. Air Force’s Air University and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh.

But for Dudley, preparing the 280 Army cadets for military service at USC as their ROTC commander is a full-circle moment. The Kittanning, Pennsylvania native’s first duty assignment out of officer candidate school brought her to Fort Jackson in Columbia, where she met her husband and had her first son.

“I’m excited to get back to the Columbia area because that’s where I started my career as an Army officer,” says Dudley. “It’s a fantastic opportunity, not only for me but for my family, and I’m super excited for it.”

As commander of the Army ROTC, also known as professor of military science, Dudley will be responsible for preparing the nation’s future Army officers. She will provide all required tactical training in the field and basic military instruction and customs in the classroom as well as helping cadets develop leadership skills in anticipation of commissioning as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. She is in a prime location to take advantage of what she views as a trifecta of leadership opportunities: providing service to the university, to Fort Jackson and to the greater Columbia community. 

“Lieutenant Colonel Dudley's assignment as commander to the University of South Carolina Army ROTC is not only momentous for the university and the aspiring women leaders she will train but is also a testament to the continued growth in leadership of the Army and nation,” says Candace Terry, executive director of veterans and military affairs. “I am excited to see the outcome of her tenure at USC as she focuses on the development of the whole soldier. Her strong leadership and experience will bring great value to Columbia and the Gamecock family.”

Dudley enters the role with three major priorities, emphasizing the crucial role of mentorship, health and wellness and academic excellence. 

Because not all cadets join ROTC with a military background, Dudley understands the importance of her position as a leader who can mentor and guide students through the earliest stage of their military careers. She is also a firm believer in the value of wellness beyond simply passing Army combat fitness tests and hopes to instill in her cadets the importance of building healthy lifestyles that will sustain them throughout their lives and careers.

Dudley also emphasizes that her cadets have dual roles as students and are expected to excel in the classroom. “As future officers, promoting academic excellence is huge for the program-- making sure that they are not only doing well with their military training and physical fitness, but bringing it back full circle to the academic excellence as well,” she says. “The Army needs not only fit leaders but bright leaders leading our next generation.”

For Dudley, though, what she most eagerly anticipates is the change of pace.

“The past couple of years have been really divided from the leadership aspect of the military because of the roles I’ve been in,” says Dudley. “I’m super excited to be able to directly reach out to these cadets and have that very hands-on approach.”
