Application tips
Your application
The School of Education encourages PhD applications which correspond to the research interests and expertise of staff - we can then offer high-quality supervision in your chosen field.
We welcome applications for PhD study on both a full-time (three year) or part-time (six year) basis.
Please review our staff profiles and research specialisms before applying. You can also explore our research themes and case studies .
If you are interested in applying to study at Sheffield and have an idea of who you would ideally like to work with, indicate this on the application form where it asks for a proposed supervisor.
You are welcome to contact staff directly to discuss your research ideas, though we recommend that you acquaint yourself first with their research work and demonstrate a good understanding of how your research project might align with their expertise.
Applicants are required to upload a Research Proposal and a Personal Statement (as separate attachments). Please upload your Research Proposal in this section and add your Personal Statement in the 'course supporting documents' section.
Applications usually take between six and eight weeks to be considered, though at certain times of year, this timeframe may extend. If you do not hear from us within 10 weeks, please do feel free to get in touch .
While every effort is made to process applications as quickly as possible, we cannot guarantee that applications received after 31 July will be processed for entry for the next academic year.
The research proposal
This proposal should be about 1,000 to 3,000 words in length (except where indicated otherwise on departmental web pages) and should incorporate the following information:
- A word count on the first page.
- A title that accurately describes your research focus.
- A description of your research aims and (where relevant) your research questions.
- A brief identification of the field in which your study would be located and of the contribution your research might make to that field.
- The methods of research proposed and a plan and timetable of work.
Research proposals should show a strong alignment with staff research interests in the school. Consult staff research profiles , and an explore an overview of research in the school .
The personal statement
You should submit a personal statement of 250 to 750 words that supplements (rather than reiterates) your research proposal. It should:
- explain your interest in the topic you intend to study;
- describe previous research experience and scholarly activity (eg research training; conference attendance; academic/professional publications; etc)
- detail relevant professional experience;
- explain, specifically , why you wish to study at Sheffield and the School of Education (eg areas of staff interest and expertise allied to your interests etc).

Enrolment in PhD programmes of Chennai's Anna University doubles
CHENNAI: The 2021-22 academic year has seen the enrolment of students in Anna University's PhD programmes double, compared to previous years. Academicians attribute the spike to pent-up demand and the likelihood that a doctorate degree will soon become mandatory for direct recruitment of assistant professors at varsities.
In 2021-22, a whopping 2,293 students were admitted to PhD programmes offered by AU's four campus colleges and engineering colleges affiliated to it across the State. In 2020-21, the figure was 1,112 while in 2019-20, the university admitted just 1,087 PhD scholars.
The rise in PhD enrolments comes amid a consistent drop in enrolment in MTech/ME courses at the varsity. "On an average, we enrol around 1,000 PhD scholars each year," the varsity's vice-chancellor R Velraj said, explaining that AU calls for applications for PhD programmes every January and July.
"However, in 2020, with COVID-19 at the peak, we did not advertise for PhD programmes in July, so interested candidates would have applied later on. This pent-up demand could be one cause for the rise in PhD admissions this year," Velraj said.
‘Research fellowships one reason for rising demand’
A senior faculty at the varsity said another factor behind the rising popularity of PhD programmes is that it is most likely to become mandatory for direct recruitment of assistant professors in universities. "Further, availability of several fellowships for doctoral research in India and abroad has also boosted demand," the faculty member said.
Academicians said the rise in PhD admissions is a good sign but Anna University should take adequate measures to ensure quality research is produced by these scholars. "Good engineering teachers are need of the hour in the State. It is overwhelming that PhD scholars have increased in terms of quantity, now we should focus on the quality as well," said former V-C of Anna University, E Balagurusamy.
Engineering faculties are of the view that a rise in number of PhD students will lead to an increase in the research output and will enhance overall funding and rankings of the university.
Velraj said that he will chalk out a strategy and motivate all faculty members to ensure the quality of research by the PhD scholars. "I will also make it a priority to ensure that the majority of the PhD students complete their work in four years," said Velraj.

Anna University tightens regulations for Ph.D. candidates and guides
Under the revised rules, candidates can take a break of only one year not two, and will do their special elective programme with regular students instead of with their research guides, university officials said.
Published - January 13, 2020 01:11 pm IST - CHENNAI
A view of Anna University
Anna University’s Ph.D. regulations have been revised and new rules have been included from this year. Research students will have to now do their first-year course work along with Master’s students. Ph.D. students will do their special elective programme along with regular students instead of ‘directed study’ with their research guides.
Earlier, Ph.D. students were allowed to take a break of up to two years but under the new norms, students will get only one year. Since the students get as much as seven years in the normal course to complete their Ph.D., it was decided that the two-year break rule would be dispensed with, according to professors.
The decision to do away with directed study was taken in order to to promote transparency, said K.P. Jaya, director for the Centre for Research. University professors felt that the move would also allow fellow students to assess the calibre of the research scholars, she said.
Another major change in the regulation is that during their course work, Ph.D. candidates should publish at least one research paper in a listed journal and must have a total CGPA of 7 to graduate. Earlier, it was 6.5. With the University adopting the Choice-Based Credit System format the grading had to reflect the flexibility it offered, officials said.
The Ph.D. regulations for 2020-21 will apply to students to be admitted from this academic year. The University admits Ph.D. candidates in January and July.
A forum of senior professors from the University, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, besides a couple of principals of affiliated colleges, drafted the regulations.
“We should follow ethical practices. University faculty members are genuine but it is necessary to make the process transparent,” explained Ms. Jaya, about the changes.
The University has also tightened the rules for aspiring guides/supervisors. Only professors who have published at least five papers in peer-reviewed journals listed by the University can apply for guide-ship. Aspiring associate professors or assistant professors should have published three and two research papers each post their Ph.D. graduation to be eligible to guide research scholars.
Since 2013m the number of research students enrolling for Ph.D. has risen steadily. The University now has 1,200 Ph.D. students on its rolls. The new regulations were introduced at a meeting with research scholars of the University in December by Vice Chancellor M.K. Surappa.
