Known for : Jesus was a first-century Jewish carpenter from Nazareth in Galilee. He became a master teacher who performed many miracles of healing and deliverance. He called 12 Jewish men to follow him, working closely with them to train and prepare them to carry on the ministry. According to the Bible, Jesus Christ is the incarnate Word of God, fully human and fully divine, Creator and Savior of the World, and the founder of Christianity. He died on a Roman cross to give his life as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world to accomplish human redemption.

Isaiah came during a pivotal time in history. The world was changing rapidly and life was on the edge of prosperity and ruin, as it is today. In this uncertain time Isaiah was called by God to deliver a message of warning, comfort, and deliverance. Christians view the prophecies of Isaiah as a projection of the coming of Jesus Christ. Isaiah spoke of divine judgment and the promises of God through the Prince of Peace. Isaiah’s message of the future King was very meticulous. He describes how Christ will come, Christ’s character and Christ’s purpose. In this paper I will dissect Isaiah’s prophecies in the Old Testament and reference them to the events of Christ in the New Testament.

When Christians answer the question “Who is Jesus Christ?” they build their answer on the Bible – on things Jesus said about Himself, on prophecies from the Old Testament that foretold His coming, and the doctrines laid out about Jesus Christ and His Church through the rest of the New Testament.

There is little historical question that Jesus Christ existed, but people do often wonder about His divine nature, His miracles, and God’s offer of eternal salvation by grace through Jesus Christ “first to the Jew and also to the Gentile” ( Romans 1:16 )… in other words, to all mankind who would believe.

Because the love that Jesus offers comes in the form of a “personal relationship” with Him, many believers have particular definitions about who Jesus Christ is to them. We want to give you the Biblical basics about this amazing, paradoxical Savior who purports to be simultaneously the Son of God and Son of Man.

The gospel of Jesus is literally “good news,” so we hope you enjoy exploring the miracle and wonder of what the God of all creation did for you through His Son.

Let’s begin our study on the identity of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 16, where the Lord put the very question to His own disciples:

The same questions are being asked to this day: Who does everyone else say Jesus Christ is, but then, who do you say He is? You must ultimately decide. It is the most important question to settle during your lifetime, for reasons we’ll examine shortly.

The Apostle Paul, before his conversion, was known as Saul, a very legalistic Jew who persecuted Christians… until he was confronted with the answer to our question in a most dramatic way, a way that changed his life and the course of history (read about it in Acts Chapter 9). After that, Paul would often refer to himself as a “bond-servant of Christ Jesus,” someone little more than a voluntary slave, but one sharing in the same servitude. In Philippians 1:21 , he expresses his secure devotion to the Lord as well as gives another clue towards answering our question when he writes: “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

You see, finding the answer can be jarring, topsy-turvy, and life-altering. It can also fill what has always seemed to be missing inside you since the Father sent His Son to reconcile you to your original purpose – communion with a wonderful, holy Creator. So as you pursue knowledge of the Savior, consider yourself joyfully warned.

1. He claimed to be the Son of God, equal with God, and with authority from the Father

“Then they all said, ‘Are You then the Son of God?’ So He said to them, ‘You rightly say that I am’” ( Luke 22:70 ).

“For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother" ( Matthew 12:50 ).

“Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God” ( John 5:17-22 ).

Bear in mind that while a man claiming to be God is a radical thought, Jesus is the only leader of a world religion to have made the claim – not to mention backed it up. How?

2. He claimed to live a sinless life.

“Can any one of you convict me of a single misleading word, a single sinful act? But if I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me?” ( John 8:46 , The Message).

Jesus had the ability to sin; if He weren’t able to sin, He could not have been tempted genuinely and would be unable to be our sympathetic High Priest ( Hebrews 4:15 ). When He was tempted, He always rebuked the thought with scripture.

Because He didn’t sin, God was able to accept His sacrifice. 1 Peter 3:18 says, “Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.”

3. He claimed to be the one and only way to God.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me” ( John 14:6 ).

It’s also interesting to note that Jesus did not call himself the destination, but the way, indicating that our Christian walk is a journey.

4. He claimed He had the power to forgive sins and provide everlasting life

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die” ( John 11:25 ).

“When Jesus saw their faith, He said, ‘Friend, your sins are forgiven.’ The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, ‘Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’” ( Luke 5:20-21 ).

"For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:40

“I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.” ( John 6:47 ).

5. He predicted his own death and resurrection.

Matthew 24:27-30 "So as the lightening comes from the east and flashes to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man... At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory."

Mark 14:61-62 "Again the high priest asked him, 'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?' 'I am,' said Jesus. 'And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.'"

Jesus clearly knew He was the Lamb of God, the Messiah spoken of in the Old Testament. He knew He had to live a life without sin, no matter what. When He returns, He will judge the sins of the world… except for those who have already acknowledged conviction, entered a plea of guilty, and sought His mercy by believing on Christ.

Old Testament Prophecies About Jesus Christ

"He was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed." ( Isaiah 53:5 , KJV)
"The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone." ( Psalm 118:22 , NAS)
"He will swallow up death for all time, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth." ( Isaiah 25:8 , NAS)

The Old Testament was completed hundreds of years before Jesus was born. A large number of prophecies were made in astonishing detail by many people throughout these books. In fact, fulfilled prophecy is one of the distinguishing marks of the Bible, authenticating its claim to be the inspired Word of God.

For example, the Old Testament indicated Jesus would be betrayed by someone he trusted. "Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who has shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me" ( Psalm 41:9 ). The New Testament, which records Jesus' life and resurrection, reveals that one of the 12 people Jesus chose to be part of his inner circle betrayed him: "Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them" ( Mark 14:10 ).

More than 300 Messianic prophecies like this were made in the Old Testament and then fulfilled through Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The chances of one person fulfilling a mere eight of these prophecies are one-in-100,000,000,000,000,000. For one person to fulfill 48 of these prophecies, the number becomes staggering – one chance in 10-to-the-157th power. Add to that the 250 other prophecies, and it becomes impossible for any other person except Jesus ever to fit that particular sequence of time and events. Excerpted from whoisjesus-really.com )

The New Testament Answers "Who Is Jesus?"

“So Jesus tried again. ‘When you raise up the Son of Man, then you will know who I am - that I'm not making this up, but speaking only what the Father taught Me. The One who sent Me stays with Me. He doesn't abandon Me. He sees how much joy I take in pleasing Him’” ( John 8:28-29 , The Message).

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” ( John 1:1-3 , NAS).

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” ( John 3:16 , NLT).

From The Book of Acts

The Book of Acts describes how Christianity moved from being seen as a sect of Judaism into a world religion because the spirit of God moved into the lives of those who had witnessed Jesus and who now carried His message of salvation into all the world.

At Pentecost, Peter preaches, “Let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ – this Jesus whom you crucified” ( Acts 2:22-36 ).

From Paul’s Letters

The Apostle Paul wrote numerous letters to the churches he helped establish in southern Europe and Asia Minor, helping to answer questions or solve disputes over Christian theology.

“Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” ( Romans 5:1 ).

“For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” ( 1 Corinthians 3:11 ).

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free” ( Galatians 5:1 ).

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her” ( Ephesians 5:25 ).

“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men” ( Philippians 2:5-7 ).

“And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation” ( Colossians 1:15 ).

From The Book of Hebrews

The Book of Hebrews is about the superiority of Christ – over prophets, angels, Moses, and priests. He made Himself our High Priest, so that we can all become priests with our own access to the Father.

“God… has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things” ( Hebrews 1:1-2 ).

From The Book of Revelation

“Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth” ( Revelation 1:5 ).

From Demons

“Suddenly they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" ( Matthew 8:29 , NKJV)

It was one of Jesus’ favorite ways to refer to Himself. He’s quoted 85 times in the King James Version of the New Testament, calling Himself the “Son of Man.” Here are some of His human characteristics:

Born in Bethlehem into a poor family where the mother, Mary, was a virgin. Both she and Joseph, the “step-father” were of the line of David and the tribe of Judah, fulfilling prophecies from Micah 5:2 , Genesis 3:15 , Isaiah 7:14 , Genesis 49:10 , Psalm 132:11 , Jeremiah 23:5 , and Isaiah 11:10 .
A Jew who grew up in Nazareth, He learned carpentry from his earthly father, “grew in wisdom & stature, and in favor with God and man,” ( Luke 2:52 ), and began a ministry throughout Israel at age 30.
The cousin of John the Baptist, who proclaimed the coming of the Messiah.
Was baptized by John at the beginning of His ministry, at which point a voice from the heavens proclaimed, “Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well-pleased.” ( Luke 3:22 , NAS)
He was tempted by Satan in the wilderness for 40 days, at which time He fasted and prayed and resisted temptation by quoting scripture.
He was misunderstood by His family and those of His hometown.
The half-brother of James, who authored the Book of James and was a leader of the early church.
After ministering, healing, and teaching for three years, He was crucified outside Jerusalem during the feast of Passover by the Romans at the demand of Jewish religious leaders.
He had human needs to eat, drink, and sleep.
Showed human emotions of love, happiness, sadness, and anger… but not fear, hatred, or pride.

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." ( John 1:14 )

The Significance of Christ’s Humanity

Living on earth for 33 years, Jesus experienced every temptation you and I face, which is why “the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation” ( 2 Peter 2:9 ). He also showed us how to model our behavior. 1 Peter 2:21 says, “Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.”

So, He knows what we go through. A god-savior could forgive sins but would not be able to relate to the sinners. A man-savior would be able to relate to humanity but would not have the authority or power to forgive sins or return from the dead. It was necessary that Jesus be both.

In doing so, he became “the New Adam.”

"Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death." ( Hebrews 2:14-15 )

With the release of the film The Passion of the Christ, this question again became something of an issue. Was Pilate responsible? Was Rome? Was it the Sanhedrin or the entire Hebrew Nation? Or did you and I kill Jesus?

Yes. And no. First, He’s not dead. Upon His death, He descended into Hell, where He took the keys and ministered to the dead. After three days, He came back to life, and not as a spirit, but with flesh and bones. When, after 40 days, He left His followers again, He ascended into Heaven, where He sits at the right hand of the Father until the time comes when He will return.

Second, Christ offered Himself up as a sacrifice, which is why we are to daily offer up ourselves as “living sacrifices” ( Romans 12:1 ). With armies of angels and the power of the heavens at His command, would it have been possible to hang the Son of God on a cross without His permission? What’s more, how awful would it be for us now had nobody “killed” Jesus? We required His perfect blood to wash our sins away. “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” ( Hebrews 9:22 , HCSB).

Therefore, to blame any individual or group for “murdering” Jesus is incorrect and a dishonor to His sacrifice.

"This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men." ( Acts 2:23 )

Jesus was not simply a good moral teacher. How, in the name of logic, common sense, and experience, could an impostor -- that is, a deceitful, selfish, depraved man -- have invented and consistently maintained from the beginning to end, the purest and noblest character known in history with the most perfect air of truth and reality? How could He have conceived and successfully carried out a plan of unparalleled beneficence, moral magnitude, and sublimity and sacrificed His own life for it in the face of the strongest prejudices of His people and age? "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said [about Himself] would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon, or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come away with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to." (Mere Christianity)

Jesus would have to have been lying or insane (not the qualities of a good moral teacher) to call Himself the Son of God and the Savior of mankind if it weren’t true.

Therefore, to separate what is comfortable about Jesus – His kindness, His message of unconditional love, His healing of the sick – from that which is less comfortable (He was born of a virgin, He claimed to be God, He rose from the dead) isn’t really possible.

There are four options open to a person dealing with Jesus. You may consider Him: a legend, a liar, a lunatic, or Lord and God.

Jesus was/is not a political deliverer. This is one reason some Jews of Jesus’ time could not believe He was their Savior – He didn’t deliver them from the oppression of their Roman occupiers. He never actually intended to. The deliverance Christ offered and still offers today is of a spiritual nature, reconciling mankind to God ( Matthew 11:27 ). The peace this Messiah brings is internal. His hope is for each human to be restored to a relationship with God, which sin has broken.

Christian Terms and Definitions of Christ

CHRIST – Not His last name. It’s a Greek title meaning "Anointed Messiah."

It denotes that He was… consecrated to his great redemptive work as Prophet, Priest, and King of his people… To believe that ‘Jesus is the Christ’ is to believe that He is the Anointed, the Messiah of the prophets, the Savior sent of God, that He was… what He claimed to be. This is to believe the gospel, by the faith of which alone men can be brought unto God. That Jesus is the Christ is the testimony of God, and the faith of this constitutes a Christian ( 1 Corinthians 12:3 ; 1 John 5:1 ). (Easton’s 1897 Bible Dictionary).

MESSIAH – The deliverer whose coming was foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament. Jews still await the coming of their Messiah today.

SALVATION – The condition of being redeemed by faith, saved by grace from an eternity of damnation. Salvation is also the belief that the death and resurrection of Christ accomplished:

Substitution – Christ sacrificed Himself in the place of sinners, just for unjust
Redemption – He paid the price of sin for each individual who accepts it
Reconciliation – Man is no longer alienated from God
Propitiation – God is satisfied with the sacrificial death of His perfect lamb as payment for sin
The fulfillment/completion of Mosaic Law

The Problem: Holy God and sinful man - "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23

"The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23

The word “sin” is used in a lot of ways, but the essential meaning and result of sin is separation from God since it involves pride -- man thinking more highly of his own ways than God’s. Without Jesus, His sacrifice and resurrection, connecting to God is not possible because of sin. We all have sinned, the results of which are death and an eternity separated from God. Since God is Holy, there can be no imperfection in His presence.

But death was not God’s plan for us. Abundant and eternal life ( John 10:10 ) is what Jesus came to bring.

Why? Because even though man was broken and earth given over to evil, God never stopped loving us. Romans 5:8 says, "But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."

However, “God saved you by His special favor when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” ( Ephesians 2:8-9 , NLT). You can’t earn a gift – it’s an unmerited favor. You do, however, have to make the choice to accept it.

So, we all, as sinners, have to turn to God for forgiveness of sin and trust that Jesus died to give us new life so that we may be “born again” ( John 3:3 ; 1 Peter 1:23 ).

Faith is the key. It’s the cause and effect of our hope for salvation. If there is truly “no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved” ( Acts 4:12 ), then your acceptance of God’s gift, your admission that you are a sinner, your repentance (changing mind), and your faith in the real-but-unseen Lord is all that can bring eternal and abundant life.

Who Is Jesus? What Does the Bible Say about Jesus Christ?

Who Is Jesus?

Jesus' identity is a topic of much debate. Who did He claim to be? What does the Bible say about Him? Firstly, He is God in human form. In John 10:30 , Jesus stated, "I and the Father are one." This statement may not immediately imply that He is God, but the Jews' reaction demonstrates that they understood it as such. They attempted to stone Him for blasphemy, as they believed that He, a mere human, claimed to be God. Jesus never tried to clarify or correct their understanding of His statement, indicating that He was indeed claiming equality with God. human redeemer of mankind, Jesus Christ.

In John 8:58 , Jesus claimed to have always existed which is an attribute of God. He said, "‘Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am!’" This statement provoked a hostile reaction from the Jews who tried to stone him again. By calling Himself "I AM", Jesus applied a name for God to Himself, as seen in Exodus 3:14 . Although the Jews rejected Jesus' identity as God Incarnate, they understood what He meant.

I was once asked, Who is Jesus Christ to you?

On one hand, it’s a simple question. On the other, it’s fairly complex.

How one answers it really reflects how they view Christianity, God and their faith.

David Lose recently wrote that since we believe in a God that we don’t see, our experience of this world may ultimately shape our view of God. For example, because we live in a world that is violent, we may view God as a violent God on a quest to eliminate and eradicate unfaithful people. Because our culture subscribes to quid pro quo , we may believe that in order to find God’s favor, we have to do things for God first.

Who is Jesus Christ to me?

Throughout a good chunk of my life, I believed that Jesus was my savior. I believed this because that’s what everyone told me.

As I grew older and as my views of God, Jesus, and faith evolved, I begin to feel that referring to Jesus as just my savior felt insufficient. I had been made to feel that the goal of life is accepting Jesus as my savior. I did. Now what? That couldn’t be the end of my faith journey, right?

What I’m learning is that the novelty of “being saved” eventually fades away.

New Christians have a passion and enthusiasm for Christ that is enviable for those who’ve been on the journey for a long time. But eventually that fades some as time passes. We hit a roadblock. We run into the longtime Christians who seemingly are passionless and tired. Or our lives take unexpected turns that rattle our newly built foundation in Christ.

Sometimes, in the midst of our storms, barriers, obstacles and brokenness, we look around and ask, “What exactly am I saved from?”

When we’re in that spiritual rut, we may try to replicate that feeling that we felt when we first accepted Christ. I’ve known so many kids in youth ministry who got saved over and over again.

In my tradition, we've usually had a summer retreat and a winter retreat. Pretty much six months between salvation experiences. The kids would be disappointed if they “felt” like they didn’t get saved this time around.

I was one of those kids chasing the high of being saved. And in the beginning stages of being a youth pastor, I was the youth pastor that tried to manufacture such moments at each retreat. The retreat wasn’t successful unless the majority of the kids accepted Jesus as their Savior. Who cares that it was the fourth time that Jae accepted Jesus as his Savior? Maybe this time it’ll stick!

One year our winter retreat was coming up and one of the regular kids hadn't registered. I asked him why he wasn’t going this time and he said, “I’m just tired of getting saved every year and nothing changing.” That's when I realized our ministry was dropping the ball. It dawned on me that my relationship had to be more than Rescuer and rescued.

Yes, Jesus Christ is my Savior, but more importantly, Jesus is my Lord. And if Jesus is my Lord, I should focus my life on doing his bidding, and not try to have Jesus do mine and fit into my world. I think this is why Wesley Covenant Prayer resonates with me, “I am no longer my own, but thine.”

So, with Christ as my Lord, I now live my life for him. Ideally, where Christ goes, I follow. Where Christ decides to send me, I go. What Christ wants me to do, I do.

But, I fight. I can’t lie, I fight and resist. But in the end, Jesus’ love wins me over. Because Jesus is a Master full of love and full of grace. That’s who Jesus Christ is to me. He is the one who looks into my eyes and says, “Child, where are they? Has no one condemned you?… Then neither do I condemn you.”

But he's also the one who gently adds, “Go now, and leave your life of sin.”

That's why when we accept Jesus as our Savior, Lord and Master, we're no longer the same. Because we're handing our lives over to him, and his grace and love is so overwhelming that it begins to change us from the inside out. We can’t remain the same when we start living for Jesus’ purpose and no longer our own.

And living for Jesus’ purpose, cause and mission — living with Christ as our Lord — that is where we find true freedom.

Jesus Christ is a man who once lived on earth, about 2000 years ago. He was sent by God to save the people. Jesus’ birth was predicted by John, born to Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a friend of Mary, Jesus’ mother. The stories of these predictions can be found in the beginning of Luke, chapter 1. Once Jesus was born, it quickly became obvious that he was no ordinary baby. People called him the Messiah and came from miles around to pay homage to him.

Herrod, the current king, was very threatened by this new baby, whom everyone said would become the king (Matthew 1:18 to 2:23). Jesus performed many miracles will on earth. He cured lepers (Matt. 8:1 – 3), made blind men see, healed the sick, raised the dead. He also spoke frequently in parables; for example, the parable of the seed (Matt. 13:3 – 9). In the end, Jesus was betrayed, and he was crucified. Three days later, on what is now Easter, Jesus rose from the dead, and later ascended into heaven.

All of these miracles were predicted before Jesus even lived; he predicted his own betrayal and death (Matt. ). Jesus came to earth in order to teach lessons about loving God and following his teachings. He reinforced the Ten Commandments, he taught the Beatitudes, and he used many parables to show that those who live in God are the only ones who live. He also taught that any who believe in him will have an eternal life in heaven.

Another important point was that all of the people who come last on earth – poor people, children, etc. – will come first in heaven. B OISE, Idaho (AP) — Chad Daybell, a self-published doomsday fiction author, is on trial in Idaho in the deaths of his wife and his new girlfriend’s two children. It’s a complex triple-murder trial that investigators say involves unusual claims that the victims were possessed by evil spirits — and more typical claims related to life insurance and social security benefits.

The children’s mother, Lori Vallow Daybell , has already been sentenced to life in prison. But Chad Daybell has pleaded not guilty to murder, conspiracy and insurance fraud charges in the deaths of his late wife, Tammy Daybell, as well as the children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan. The trial is expected to take more than two months .

Here’s a look at some of the people connected to the case.

Chad Daybell, 55, was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and self-published fiction loosely based on its teachings. He married Tammy Daybell in 1990. They had five kids and a home in rural southeastern Idaho.

Prosecutors say he met Vallow Daybell at a conference in Utah in 2018. They became a couple, insisting they had been married in a past life, police said. They led a group of friends in trying to cast out evil spirits by praying and doing what they called “energy work,” prosecutors said.

In some cases, they claimed, a person could become a “zombie,” and the only way to banish a zombie was to kill the person, friends said. One friend told police she heard Vallow Daybell call the children zombies before they disappeared.

In October 2019, Daybell reportedly told authorities that his wife had been battling a respiratory infection and died in her sleep. The death was initially attributed to natural causes, but authorities became suspicious when Chad Daybell married Lori Vallow Daybell just two weeks later.

Tammy Daybell’s body was exhumed and an autopsy showed she died of asphyxiation.

Lori Vallow Daybell , 50, is a beautician by trade, a mother of three and a wife — five times over. She was convicted last year of murder, conspiracy and grand theft charges and has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. She is also facing charges in Arizona related to the 2019 death of her fourth husband.

Vallow Daybell’s first marriage, to a high school sweetheart when she was 19, ended quickly. She married again in her early 20s and had a son. In 2001, Vallow Daybell married again, this time to a man named Joseph Ryan. The couple had a daughter named Tylee in 2002, but divorced a few years later. Ryan later died in his home of a suspected heart attack.

After her father’s death, Tylee received social security survivor benefits — which Vallow Daybell collected herself after Tylee disappeared in 2019.

During her sentencing , Vallow Daybell gave a long statement saying that “accidental deaths happen.” She claimed the spirits of the three victims visited her regularly and were all happy in the “spirit world.”

In summer 2019, after her fourth husband was shot to death by her brother, Vallow Daybell moved with her two youngest kids to southeastern Idaho, where she could be closer to Chad Daybell. That September, the children disappeared, and Chad and Tammy Daybell applied to increase Tammy Daybell’s life insurance benefit, prosecutors said.

Tammy Daybell died the next month.

The children’s bodies were found the following year, buried in Chad Daybell’s yard.

Charles Vallow, a member of the LDS church, entered the picture several months after Vallow Daybell and Joseph Ryan divorced. Vallow Daybell joined the LDS church and the two married in 2006. They later adopted Joshua Jaxon “JJ” Vallow.

By 2019, the marriage had soured. Charles Vallow filed for divorce, contending in court papers that Vallow Daybell believed herself to be a deity tasked with helping to usher in the Biblical apocalypse.

The two were estranged but still married when Vallow Daybell’s brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed Charles Vallow outside his suburban Phoenix home.

Cox told police the shooting was in self defense and was never charged in the case. Shortly after Charles’ death, Vallow Daybell moved to eastern Idaho with her brother and two children.

Both Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow Daybell are accused of conspiring with Vallow Daybell’s brother, Alex Cox, in the deaths. But Cox was never charged — he died suddenly in December 2019.

Autopsy and toxicology reports showed Cox died of a pulmonary blood clot, and law enforcement officials have said Cox’s death is believed to be from natural causes.

During Vallow Daybell’s trial, prosecutors presented several witnesses and pieces of evidence that appeared to tie Cox to the deaths, including GPS data on Cox’s phone that was traced to the places where the children’s bodies were found.

Prosecutors say Cox also tried to shoot Tammy Daybell in October 2019.

Friends of Cox and Vallow Daybell testified last year that the siblings were very close, and that Cox believed he was put on Earth to serve as Vallow Daybell’s “protector.”

Cox also believed people could be possessed and turn into zombies, his wife, Zulema Pastenes, testified. When Cox learned Tammy Daybell’s body was being exhumed, he said he was the “fall guy” but wouldn’t elaborate, Pastenes said. He died the next day.

The Republican outrage machine kicked into gear over Easter weekend after President Biden noted that Sunday was being celebrated for more than one reason.

International Transgender Day of Visibility is observed every year on March 31. Easter is observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox.

This year, for the second time since Transgender Day of Visibility was established 15 years ago, and the last time until 2086, the two happened to coincide. President Biden publicly honored both of them , as he has done every year since he took office in 2021.

Republicans responded with a flurry of statements declaring that Mr. Biden had besmirched Christianity — the latest manifestation of anger that, over the past few years, has often flared up after public acknowledgments of transgender people.

Mr. Biden released a proclamation on Friday to “honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirm our nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect union — where all people are created equal and treated equally throughout their lives.”

On Sunday, Mr. Biden said that “Easter reminds us of the power of hope and the promise of Christ’s resurrection.”

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for former President Donald J. Trump, said Mr. Biden should apologize to people who believed Sunday was “for one celebration only — the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” The House speaker, Mike Johnson, said Mr. Biden had “betrayed the central tenet of Easter.” Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee called his proclamation “an intentional attack on religion.”

Many Republicans said falsely that Mr. Biden had declared Sunday as the transgender holiday, though the day has been observed for years.

Their comments drew sharp pushback from Democrats, including Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia, a Baptist pastor. “Jesus centered the marginalized. He centered the poor,” Mr. Warnock said on CNN on Sunday. “And in a moment like this, we need voices, particularly voices of faith, who would use our faith not as a weapon to beat other people down but as a bridge to bring all of us together.”

Ms. Leavitt and Mr. Johnson, among others, also claimed that Mr. Biden was leveling another attack on Christianity by banning religious designs from an Easter egg decorating contest. The contest, however, has banned such designs under presidents of both parties.

“As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American,” Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman, said in a statement.

Mr. Bates added: “Sadly, it’s unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful and dishonest rhetoric.”

Criticism of transgender people has become a central component of Republican cultural rhetoric and legislation. Many conservatives have treated recognition of or appearances by transgender people as an affront, including boycotting Bud Light after the company sent beer to a transgender influencer for promotion.

Mr. Biden’s proclamation also condemned the array of laws that Republican-led states have passed, restricting transgender people’s use of public bathrooms, participation in sports, access to transition care and more.

The relationship between partisanship and voters’ religious affiliation continues to be strong – especially when it comes to whether they belong to any organized religion at all.

The gap between voters who identify with an organized religion and those who do not has grown much wider in recent years.

Protestants mostly align with the Republican Party. Protestants remain the largest single religious group in the United States. As they have for most of the past 15 years, a majority of Protestant registered voters (59%) associate with the GOP, though as recently as 2009 they were split nearly equally between the two parties.

Partisan identity among Catholics had been closely divided, but the GOP now has a modest advantage among Catholics. About half of Catholic voters identify as Republicans or lean toward the Republican Party, compared with 44% who identify as Democrats or lean Democratic.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remain overwhelmingly Republican. Three-quarters of voters in this group, widely known as Mormons, identify as Republicans or lean Republican. Only about a quarter (23%) associate with the Democratic Party.

Muslims associate with Democrats over Republicans by a wide margin. Currently, 66% of Muslim voters say they are Democrats or independents who lean Democratic, compared with 32% who are Republicans or lean Republican. (Data for Muslim voters is not available for earlier years because of small sample sizes.)

Democrats maintain a wide advantage among religiously unaffiliated voters. Religious “nones” have become more Democratic over the past few decades as their size in the U.S. population overall and in the electorate has grown significantly. While 70% of religiously unaffiliated voters align with the Democratic Party, just 27% identify as Republicans or lean Republican.

Over the past few decades, White evangelical Protestant voters have moved increasingly toward the GOP.

Today, 85% of White evangelical voters identify with or lean toward the GOP; just 14% align with the Democrats.

Among those who identify their religion as “nothing in particular” – and who comprise a majority of all religious “nones” – Democrats hold a smaller advantage in party identification.

More than eight-in-ten atheists (84%) align with the Democratic Party, as do 78% of agnostics.

For White, Hispanic and Asian voters, regular attendance at religious services is linked to an increase in association with the Republican Party.

However, this is not the case among Black voters.

Can I Tell an Unbeliever ‘Jesus Died for You’?

Some who read this article’s title might wonder why anyone would ask such a question. “Of course you can! How else can you share the gospel?” For Christians who believe in general atonement—the idea that Christ died for every individual in the same way—this question never even comes up.

It only arises for Christians who believe in definite (or limited) atonement . Definite atonement means that when Jesus died, he wasn’t making salvation possible for all but certain for none. He was securing the salvation of a definite (and massive) number of sinners from every nation—those whom the Father had given him (John 6:38–39). In this view, no one for whom Christ died will ultimately be condemned (Rom. 8:34); all those for whom Christ died will ultimately be saved (5:10).

But since God hasn’t given everyone to Christ (John 17:9), this means Christ didn’t die for everyone (such that all will be saved). Jesus died for his sheep, and not everyone is part of his sheep (10:11, 26). Jesus died for his Bride, and not everyone is part of his Bride (Eph. 5:25; Rev. 19:7–8). Since we can’t know who the sheep are apart from the evidence of saving faith, it raises the practical question of whether we can tell a current unbeliever “Jesus died for you!” After all, how can we know for sure?

Thorny Question

Full disclosure: I’m a pastor who holds to definite atonement. I believe the arguments I just summarized. Moreover, I don’t typically say to individuals point-blank “Jesus died for you”—either in my preaching or in personal conversations.

And yet I recognize this is a thorny question requiring great care. We can preach the gospel without directly mentioning election, but we’d be hard-pressed to preach the gospel without talking about Christ dying in the place of unbelieving sinners (1 Cor. 15:1–3; 1 Tim. 1:15; 1 Pet. 3:18). So it’s not hard to see why the question “Which unbelieving sinners?” would seem relevant. Someone might ask, “What good is an atonement if you can’t be sure it applies to you?”

This is probably why the Reformed theologians I read rarely answer this question with a flat “No” but with something like a “No, but ” (or even a “Yes, but ”). In that spirit, let me address this practical question by offering counsel to both sides—to those who opt to use the phrase and those who don’t.

If You’re Going to Make ‘Jesus Died for You’ Part of Your Evangelism

First, make sure you’re not making a bigger deal out of this phrase than the Bible does. Recognize, for example, that there are no evangelistic sermons in Acts where this precise language is used. If Peter and Paul could evangelize without saying “Jesus died for you,” then you shouldn’t make it a litmus test for gospel orthodoxy.

Second, make sure your unbelieving hearers know they’re not saved until they repent and believe. Most Christians understand this, but we shouldn’t assume non-Christians do. If hearing “Jesus died for you” makes a person feel secure in his sin and unbelief, then it’s misleading. As Jesus reminded us, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3, 5).

Finally, make sure you help unbelievers feel God’s wrath as well as his love. To my surprise, I once heard an evangelist tell a nonbeliever “God is not angry with you!” He explained that since 1 John 2:2 calls Christ “the propitiation [i.e., wrath-removing sacrifice] . . . for the sins of the whole world,” God mustn’t be angry with anyone anymore. But this flatly contradicts John 3:36: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

Until people believe, God is still angry with them. In fact, it’s only God’s wrath that helps us see his love as more than mere sentimentality.

If You’re Not Going to Make ‘Jesus Died for You’ Part of Your Evangelism

First, don’t flip out when others do. They may not believe in definite atonement, but what they usually mean by those words is something like “Jesus died in such a way that if you believe on him you will be saved”—which you believe too.

Second, don’t be more guarded in your language than the apostles. When you’re more careful than Scripture, it can justify others’ concerns about Calvinism killing evangelism. Peter and Paul may not have told unbelievers “Jesus died for you,” but they did make similar appeals in their evangelism:

“The promise is for you” [i.e., the promise of the Holy Spirit and the forgiveness of sins] (Acts 2:39).
“God . . . sent [Jesus] . . . to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness” (3:26).
“Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name” (10:43).
“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you [singular] will be saved” (16:31).

So don’t be afraid to speak like the Bible speaks, even if it sounds “Arminian.” Few preachers were as committed to definite atonement as Charles Spurgeon , and yet he was frequently attacked by hyper-Calvinists for being too free with his language toward unbelievers. That’s because Spurgeon’s goal wasn’t to keep hardcore Calvinists happy with him; he was seeking to honor God and win souls.

Don’t be afraid to speak like the Bible speaks, even if it sounds ‘Arminian.’

Finally, make sure you help unbelievers feel God’s love as well as his wrath. The gospel warns, but it also woos. D. A. Carson once noted that when asked by young, Reformed preachers whether he feels OK telling unbelievers that God loves them, his answer was “Of course I tell the unconverted that God loves them.” Iain Murray put it this way :

[It is true that] . . . the Holy Spirit uses truth to convince us of sin. . . . But conviction of sin is not enough to bring men to Christ. Conviction of sin only speaks of God’s holiness, it tells the sinner nothing of God’s willingness to pardon. . . . For that further truth is needed. It is only the disclosure of love which can persuade the sinner of God’s readiness and willingness to pardon. . . . Love is the great attraction. Love stands foremost in the gospel appeal. . . . And this love is to be proclaimed as ‘good news’ not to men as elect, but to men as sinners.

It’s God’s kindness, not just his power, that leads people to repentance (Rom. 2:4).

Definite atonement doesn’t deny God’s universal love—it deepens it by recognizing God’s special love. Just as a man can (and should) love all women while loving his wife uniquely, so Jesus can love all people (see Mark 10:21) while loving his Bride uniquely. This is the clear message of Ephesians 5:25. The gospel of definite atonement says Jesus died for his Bride in a special way but then turns around and invites people into that relationship. “The Spirit and the Bride say ‘Come’” (Rev. 22:17). If we share the gospel with that kind of passion, I doubt anyone will wonder whether Jesus died for them.
