Dividing fractions word problems
Dividing fractions word problems arise in numerous situations. We will show you some examples. I recommend that you review the lesson about division of fractions before starting this lesson.
Dividing fractions word problems: a few examples
3 friends share 4/5 of a pizza. what fraction of pizza does each person get?
The amount to share is 4/5
Since the amount will be shared between 3 friends, the amount must be divided between 3 people.
So each person must get 4/5 divided by 3
(4 / 5) / 3 = (4 / 5) / (3 / 1) = 4 / 5 × 1 / 3 = (4 × 1) / (5 × 3)= 4 / 15
Each person will eat 4/15.
Indeed, 4 / 15 + 4 / 15 + 4 / 15 = 12 / 15 = 4/5 (divide 12 and 15 by 3 to get 4 / 5)
On June 21st, there were 9/10 of a billion stars visible to the naked eye.
On December 21st, there were 4/5 of a billion stars out visible to the naked eye.
How many times more stars were there visible on June 21st than December 21st?
9/10 divided by 4/5 = ?
Find the reciprocal of the divisor.
9/10 × 5/4 = ?
9/10 × 5/4 = 9/2 × 1/4
Solve 9/2 × 1/4 = 9/8
Simplify again

Word Problems with Division of Fractions
Today we are going to look at problems involving the division of fractions.
Are you ready to begin? Well, the first thing that we must remember is that in a problem with fractions we should follow all the necessary steps to solve any problem , only we have to add a step for the simplification of the result:
- Read the problem carefully.
- Think about what it asks us.
- Think about the details we need.
- Carry out the operation. In this case, you should know how to divide fractions
- Simplify the results, if possible.
- Think about whether the result makes sense.
Now that we have already recalled what is fundamental for solving a problem with fractions, we can move on to review word problems with division of fractions . We will look at a problem where it is necessary to divide fractions to solve.
Let’s look at an example:
Priscilla bought cheese that weighs ¾ pounds. If she divides it into portions that are each 1/8 pound, how many portions can she make?
The first thing we should do are steps 1, 2, and 3: read carefully, understand the question, and think about the relevant details.
Priscilla bought cheese that weighs ¾ of a pound. If she divides it into portions that are each 1/8 of a pound, how many portions can she make?
That is to say…
If she divided ¾ of a pound into equal portions of 1/8 of a pound, how many portions did she make?
We already know that the operation is division. We are going to move on to steps 4 and 5 (solve and simplify).
We divide by taking the reciprocal of the second fraction and multiplying:
Then we simplify:
She made 6 portions.
Now, all we have left is to check that the solution makes sense, and we have solved the problem!

Solving Division with Unit Fractions Word Problems
Unit fractions are fractions with a numerator of one. The worksheet of word problems below involves the division of whole numbers by unit fractions.
To solve the problem, divide the whole number by the unit fraction.
Word Problems of Dividing Fractions by Cross Canceling
Cross-cancellation is a shortcut for making fractions easier to multiply.
This is because a fraction division problem may always be converted to a fraction multiplication problem.
- Take the reciprocal of the divisor. To find the reciprocal of a fraction, simply switch the numerator and denominator. The divisor is the number being divided.
- If either factor is not in its simplest form, simplify it immediately.
- Cancel any factors that appear in both the numerator and the denominator. Because both elements are placed diagonally from each other, we call it cross-cancellation.
- Repeat the previous step on the other diagonal.
- Multiply all numerators and all denominators to get the answer.
Now download the free worksheet and practice.
Dividing Mixed Numbers by Fractions Word Problems
This method is a little bit challenging. The following steps help solve the division problems.
- Convert the mixed number to improper fractions first.
- Then multiply the reciprocal of the second fraction by the first fraction.
- Finally, simplify the result and convert it to a mixed number if necessary.

Tips for Fraction Word Problems
Word problems that involve fractions are often considered difficult for students resulting in reluctance in attempting the questions. Yes, they are a bit more complex than the normal word problems. However, using the right tips and rules, these questions can be solved by any student. All you need to do is practice. Let's try understanding certain examples.
Multiplying Fraction word problems: While at a bakery, a woman purchased bought half a pound of chocolate fudge cake. She ate that cake at night after dinner around 1/4 of it. How much is left?
Dividing Fraction Word Problem: Jamal's mother made his favorites, peanut butter caramel fudge cake around 1/3 of pound. She divided the fudge into four equal pieces. How much cake will go into each container?
1. You need to read the problem carefully at first. Circle any keywords that may indicate a math operation. For addition, some commonly used terms include: both, in all, increase, and total. Subtraction: difference, fewer, take away, and less. Multiplication: product, times, and lots. Division: each, every, and shared. Give it another read, if you are still not able to understand.
2. Explain the problem in your own words to someone else (a friend or a teacher). It may help to draw a picture.
3. Translate this into an equation or an expression that indicates what we are trying to find. Practice the same problem with different variables and numbers. Students learn how to handle word problems that include and use fractional values.
4. Solve the problem and make sure that you are using the proper units. The value you calculate should answer the question posed by the problem.
Quick Operation Review with Fractions
When you are working with word problems that involve fractions it is good to refer back to the basic foundation of the math that is required. The universal rule when working with these types of problems is to ensure that you are working with fraction values that share a common denominator. The beauty of this is that you do not have to worry about using the least common denominator at first as long as you reduce the final fraction. Find a common denominator between the values that you find easy to work with. When you have both values in that format, addition and subtraction are simple. Just add the numerators for addition and subtract the numerators for subtraction. The denominator will not change. The operation just takes place at the numerator level. When it comes to multiplication, we do not need to worry about finding a common base, just multiply the numerators and denominators of the fractions together. Division is much the same divide the numerators and the denominators. Those are the basic rules you will need to follow when processing these problems. The biggest challenge when working with these types of problems is determining which operation you will need to work with based on the situation. If you look for common keywords, you can quickly establish the type of math that is involved. For addition look for the words: combine(d), increase, join, together, and total. For subtraction look for the words or phrases: decrease, difference, left over, less than, reduce, remove, and take away. For multiplication look for the words or phrases: by, per, product of, and times. For division look for the words: average, equal parts, out of, ratio, shared, and split.
