Visiting a local library is a great way for avid readers to save money. But when you’re after a copy for your own library the internet is your best bet. Finding cheap books online is quick and easy when you know where to look; lucky for you, we’ve done the research to bring you 20 of the best online bookstores. Some will help you pin down a specific title, while others are great fun to browse. On some you’ll find second-hand books for as little as $1, and on others you’ll find brand new copies of the latest releases for a competitive price. Whatever you’re after, the best site for your needs is listed below!

As well as being good for the soul, shopping at Better World Books is good for your pocket. Despite being in good condition, most of their used books cost less than $4. Alibris was established in 1998 to bring the power of e-commerce to independent booksellers and collectors. So if you simply have to have that signed copy, first edition, or out of print hardback, this is the place to look for it. That’s not to say you won’t find recent bestsellers, famous classics , and popular fiction on this site, too: they house a pretty good balance of old and new for young and old. And you won’t struggle to find cheap books either among all those more expensive collector’s items. Just head to the “Bargains” tab and browse by genre, or select the “Used” filter when browsing their book categories.

5. Book Mooch

For something a little different, look to Book Mooch and forget the arduous hunt for cheap books online — this site is practically free! Once you sign up, you just enter in a list of books you own and would like to get rid of, as well as a list of books that you’d like to own but don’t currently have. When someone requests one of your old books, you simply ship it to them (this is the only cost involved) and earn yourself a point. That point can then be used to request a book from someone else on Book Mooch! This system won’t work if you’re looking to build a large collection of books. But on the other hand, if you do just want to clear out your shelves, you can choose to donate the points you earn to charity.

6. Half Price Books

The founders of Half Price Books opened their first used bookstore way back in 1972, in an old laundromat in Dallas, Texas. Now they operate more than 172 stores in 17 states, but their mission remains the same: to “promote literacy and be kind to the environment” by collecting, donating, and passing on gently used books. 

Unless you’re a non-profit organization or a local school, you’ll have to get your hands on their inventory of cheap books online. Their marketplace features more than 20,000 individual sellers, so if you’re searching for a particular title, just pop it in the search bar and you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a copy. Or, for their best bargains, head to their “Superbuys” category, where you’ll find discounted books starting at less than $2!

Biblio sells itself as a unique online bookstore for bibliophiles. They specialize in carefully curated collections from independent booksellers around the world — many of which tailor to booklovers with niche interests, and those looking for rare, antiquarian books. While you won’t find this year’s New York Times bestsellers at BookOutlet.com , you will find ridiculously cheap books that are just as worthy of your time. How so cheap? Most of the books sold on this site are what they call Bargain Books: excess inventory or store returns from publishers. So while they haven’t been read by anyone else, they might have a little bit of wear and tear from being shipped around or out on the shop floor. 

Book Outlet isn't our first recommendation if you’re looking to find a specific book cheaply. But if you’re happy to just browse, then their featured lists — including staff picks and books in clearance — make it easy to find great deals on great titles.

Whether you’re looking for a cookbook, a textbook, a collectible, or the latest fiction, always check eBay before buying from anywhere else. We can’t guarantee you’ll find it for pennies, or even that you’ll find it at all! But the magic thing about eBay is that absolutely anyone can become a seller — so the listings are unpredictable both in terms of what books are sold and how much they cost. You never know when you’ll come across a rare book for the cheapest price you’ve seen. The shipping cost and the condition of the book can also be a little unpredictable, but sellers have to be upfront about both, so always check the description and you should avoid any surprises.

If you’re browsing for cheap books online from a homestead across the pond, then this UK company, Hive , is one worth checking out. Its staff has set out to keep the high-street shopping experience alive, while providing all the convenience (and competitive prices) of online browsing. From finding local bookshops to meeting passionate staff, the social side of book-buying hasn’t disappeared from this retailer. And to support independent bookstores (so they don’t disappear either), Hive asks you to choose a bookshop to receive a percentage of your money after every purchase. Though the chances that you’ll find a specific title are pretty slim, if you’re happy to browse, then you can stumble across some great titles at great prices. What’s more, the cost of shipping isn’t going to hike up the price: for shoppers in the UK, shipping is free, and in most other countries your books will ship for a flat £2.99!

The system works the same way: you list what you’ve got, ship it off when it’s requested, and earn a credit. You can also use your credits to buy brand new books for a discounted price. Once you’ve read a book, it’s yours to keep — or you can swap it again in an endless chain of book love!

Thrift Books has a huge collection of cheap, new and used books online. By using the search bar, or browsing their “Categories” and “Featured” tabs, you’ll be able to find pretty much any book you could want — including comic books, graphic novels , and manga. Then, you choose the condition: the books still looking good as new are the most expensive, while you can snag some excellent deals on books that have been well-loved. 

Used books will always have a decent chunk of money knocked off, but most recent bestsellers cost over $20 on this site. People who rehome pre-loved books are great friends to the environment, so we always encourage used book-buying wherever possible. But sometimes only new will do — we get it. To find cheap new books browse the bestsellers page filtered for books under $5 — and always keep your eyes peeled for extra money-saving deals!

UK-based Wordery is out to rival Amazon by providing an alternative haven for book-shopping, where you can find the books you love, at low prices, and have them delivered to you for free — wherever you’re located. The “alternative” aspect is all about enjoyment. Wordery’s founders think retailers like Amazon have sucked the soul out of book-buying — so their site recaptures the friendly, helpful spirit of a traditional bookstore, with all the convenience of shopping online: great value, round-the-clock access, and over 10 million books to choose from!

16. Daedalus Books

Daedalus Books prides itself on selling quality new books for incredibly cheap prices — cheaper even than Amazon (though the selection is quite a bit smaller). Most of their books have been remaindered by publishers: this means they’re new books that have gone unsold. While some of the titles that end up in this sticky situation admittedly aren’t very good, the staff at Daedalus Books know what they’re looking for. They do a great job of curating a collection that includes classic books as well as last year’s best sellers. The best deals live under the “Last Chance” tab, and are available for less than $3. But watch out for shipping costs: the standard rate is $8.95!

17. Powell’s

Powell’s began as a Portland-based bookstore back in 1971, but you can now browse a huge selection of their cheap books online — we’re talking more than three million! While they stock a variety of new books, you’ll find the best bargains under the “Used” tab. There you can filter your results by price, award, and award year — so expect to find some recent titles you’ve been dying to read! Though discounted, the books on Powell’s aren’t dirt-cheap. But it’s still better than paying full price, and they’re very picky about the quality of the used books they stock. Plus orders of $50 and up ship for free, while everything else ships for a flat $3.99.

Though it’s not quite the same as browsing through the stacks of this NYC bookshop in real life, shopping online at StrandBooks.com comes pretty close. And you’ll have access to all of their 18 miles of books, including rare out-of-print books and pre-orders that arrive hot off the press. Old or new, used or unused, every book on this site is sold at a discounted price and is in excellent condition. As well as being picky about the pre-loved books they buy, the staff at The Strand are real New York literati, so the “ Staff Picks Table ” on the “First Floor” is well worth a look. (And how great is it that they organise their site like a bookshop?!)

The online arm of the huge US retail chain Books A Million , this is the site to shop for new copies of popular titles at a good price. You can also get your hands on slightly discounted pre-orders — so you can have the hottest new read in your hands the moment it comes out. Since BAM doesn’t stock many used books, the average price certainly isn’t the lowest on this list. However, under the “Bargain Books” tab, you’ll find all their best deals, including classics starting at less than $5 — many of which we consider to be the best books of all time .

Amazon-owned Book Depository doesn’t sell used books for next-to-nothing prices like some of the other sites on this list, but it does knock a small percentage off every book it stocks — which means you’re likely to find the cheapest prices for the newest titles right here. Their “Bargain Shop” also helps you find the best bargains in every genre, including books by Jacqueline Wilson, Ann Cleeves, and Zadie Smith. Where To Sell Used Books: 6 Of The Best Places Online (And In Person)

There comes a time in every reader’s life where they have to accept some hard truths: that not every book they’ve read is one they should treasure forever; that they don’t need three different copies of their favorite classic, even if it keeps being re-released with cooler covers; that decorating in towering stacks of books might not be the healthiest choice unless they want to start wearing helmets around the house. When you’ve come to this point, you will want to clean out your collection. And, that may mean it’s time to sell books (*gasp!*).

Of course, there are plenty of other ways to go about this: you may want to do the KonMari method,  you may just go for a good ol’ spring cleaning . You may need to recite some of Alice’s helpful mantras to yourself. However you do it, you will hopefully be left with large stacks of books to dispose of. You could give them away or donate them, which is quite noble, but it is always nice to be able to get a little money back from everything you’ve paid out to your bookshelves.

Here’s where to sell used books, whether online or in-person. We’ve got options for selling textbooks, as well as hardcovers and paperbacks.

1. BookScouter

I like to start with BookScouter.com . BookScouter says they’re just for textbook buyback, but I’ve had some good luck checking prices of regular trade books. Book Scouter will tell you what websites will currently pay for each book you’re trying to sell. This will give you a good idea of whether or not it’s even worth selling your books. Remember, all of these websites pay based on what they think they can sell books for, so books with higher demand will sell for more.

I check the selling price of  Go Set a Watchman , a hardcover book I paid full price for, but one that I honestly never want to see on my shelves again. BookScouter says that one (just one) of the websites they scan will buy my copy for $0.12. Harsh. I didn’t like it either, guys, but that’s like $0.25 less than what it probably cost to print the dang book. My paperback of  To Kill a Mockingbird , on the other hand, will go to three different sites for as much as $0.75.

That’s supply and demand, my friends.

One thing before we go on: you’re probably not going to make a lot of money off your books unless you’re a collector or plan on doing this in major volume. You’ll be quite lucky to make $1 a book. If you’re planning to sell books, wait until you have at least a stack of them ready to go. If you only have two or three books you need to re-home, you’re better off putting them in a Little Free Library .

2. Half Price Books

On my last trip to Half Price Books , I had a banker’s box full of hardcovers in great condition, and I made about $20, which was enough to cover the cost of some bookends and magazine boxes that I used to finish organizing my bookshelves .

If you live near a HPB, this is a great solution for selling your books. You pack up your books, bring them in, and then wait at the store while a bookseller appraises your books. You can browse the stacks and they’ll call you when your offer is ready.

There are a few different options for selling books online through Amazon.

The first is through their trade-in program . For the trade-in program, you search your book edition, find the ISBN (the 13 digit code typically on the back or on the copyright page), and check if Amazon will offer you money for your book. Fill out a brief questionnaire about the condition of your book, and then Amazon will give you a shipping label. Once they’ve received the book, they’ll give you an Amazon credit.

You might end up getting more money from this system overall since Amazon really just wants you to spend your money at Amazon, even if it’s money they give you. Just, like, try to buy a book from a local indie to even out your book-buying karma later. You can also sell books the traditional way on Amazon, by setting up a seller account and listing your books. If you do this, you’ll have to set up a product page for each book you plan to sell and wait for a buyer. This is totally doable, but it does take some commitment.

4. Powell’s Books

Powell’s will, like Half Price, let you bring books into their stores for appraisal, but if you’re not close to a physical location, you can sell to them online.

They prefer to only take books in excellent condition. Just enter your ISBNs to the form on their site and they’ll send you a price quote and a shipping label. You can get money via PayPal or you can get store credit.

5. Online Buy Back Programs

There are dozens, maybe hundreds of sites that will let you enter your book ISBNs, answer a few questions about quality, and then they will give you a price quote for your book and a shipping label.

Some of them have minimums, so you won’t be able to cash out until you’ve sold X dollars worth of books with them. Use BookScouter to try to determine which of these sites will offer you the most money back.

6. Your local indie

Finally, also check out your nearby indies for local places where to sell used books. Many of them offer cashback for your books or store credit. Always call ahead and check on their requirements.

Tips For selling used books

If you’re looking for where to sell used books, and have found some places online or locally, remember these few tips. It will help you avoid any costs or complaints when you go to sell books.

Be honest about the condition of your books

Buyers won’t be happy if you’ve misrepresented what state the book is in, and could report you to the website you sold through. If there is some shelf-wear on the book, say so.

Be careful when shipping

If you’re going to do a lot of bookselling, you might want to invest in some shipping envelopes and other packing materials. Make sure you’re using something that is water-resistant, and if it’s a book that will show bumps and dings, like a nice hardcover, make sure you wrap it carefully.

Also, don’t forget to make note of the tracking numbers. The bookselling site may send you a shipping label, but you’ll still be responsible to make sure the book arrives at its destination, and you’ll need the tracking number to communicate with the post office or shipping company.

You can always donate! 

If you find that the task of selling off your books is too much work, if you don’t think you’re getting enough money back to justify the time, or if you have a book that just won’t sell, remember you can always donate your books!

There are many organizations that are always looking for books, or you can drop off a book in a local Little Free Library. Or, donate your books to prisons . If none of these is an option, we have a few ideas for how to repurpose your used books .

Have a goal

It’s extremely tempting to go right out and buy more books with your book money, but try to hold off! I find it helpful to have a plan for how to spend my book money.

As I said earlier, I’ve used my book-selling money on  magazine boxes for my comics , and other organizational tools for my shelves. You might want to put the money toward a special edition of your favorites , or maybe something you’ve been eyeing from Book Fetish .

Swap books with another reader

Why not kill two birds with one stone? You can donate a book and get a new one with a trusty book swap, either through friends or at an online retailer like Paperback Swap or Book Mooch .

Check for local sales

Some libraries raise funds by selling second-hand books. Find the closest public library to you using this U.S. map created with data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and ask your librarian if they have a "for sale" table.

Independent bookstores may let you trade your old books for store credit that you can use to snag a new one. Thrift stores and consignment shops also typically sell used books.

Another place to scour is Facebook Marketplace. You never know who is doing a closet cleanout and wants to get rid of their old books for a few dollars. 

How to read books for free

You don’t have to shell out any money to become well-read – a library card is all you need to unlock a world of literature. Start by visiting your local library . You typically only need proof of address to apply for a library card.

Little Free Library’s take-a-book, leave-a-book model is also a great place for finding new free books. These outdoor pop-up hutches are all over the country. Check out Little Free Library’s map of registered libraries across the U.S. to find one near you.

You can also try e-reading. The Libby app lets readers borrow e-books, digital audiobooks and magazines with your library card.

Audiobooks are another low-cost way to access books and popular platforms like Audible , Libro.fm , B&N Audiobooks and Audiobooks.com let you listen at your leisure with a monthly subscription fee. Spotify recently unveiled a new audiobook program as well where eligible Spotify premium subscribers can enjoy 15 hours of monthly listening from over 200,000 audiobooks.

Where to donate books

If you love to read but are trying to reduce the clutter in your home, e-books can be a perfect solution. Digital titles are also great for those who want to keep their books portable and never worry about losing their place.

You don’t even need an e-reader to access them, as we detail in “ This Trick Lets You Read E-Books Without an E-Reader .” You just need to know where to find them.

We’ve rounded up websites that collectively offer more than 1 million free e-books, covering virtually every book genre and every reader age. Following are many great places to find e-books for free.

1. Your local library’s website

Many public libraries allow their members to borrow e-books, as we detail in “ Stop Buying These 11 Things That Are Free at Libraries .” Magazines, comics and audiobooks are also often available.

Check your local library system’s website to see if it offers this option.

You’ll find free e-books for Kindle, which is Amazon's line of e-readers , on the e-commerce giant’s “ Cheap Reads for Kindle ” webpage.

Note, however, that Amazon says free books sometimes vary in quality or don’t support all Kindle reading features. The company recommends first checking out reviews and ratings for free books you’re considering downloading.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you have access to even more freebies via Prime Reading . You can also choose one free Kindle e-book each month through the First Reads perk.

3. Barnes & Noble

You’ll find free e-books for Nook, which is Barnes & Noble’s line of e-readers , on the retailer’s “ Free eBooks ” webpage. You can also read on your phone or other tablet with the free Nook app for Android , Apple and Windows devices.

To explore the offerings, click on any of the many genres listed under “Subjects” on the left side of the page. There are also other filters, including Top 100 lists, and recommended age ranges if you’re looking for your children.

You’ll find freebies for Kobo, a line of e-readers from Rakuten Kobo , on the Kobo website’s “ Free eBooks ” page. There is also a Kobo Books app you can use to read on Apple and Android devices.

5. Google Play

The Google Play Store includes a “ Top Free ” collection offering a sampling of freebies in its books category. Directly below where it says “Top selling,” there are also buttons to click for deals and free e-books. Click the button on the end of that row to switch to “Top free.”

6. Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg describes itself as the first provider of free e-books and now offers more than 70,000 free titles.

Its website explains :

“You will find the world’s great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired. Thousands of volunteers digitized and diligently proofread the eBooks, for you to enjoy.”

To start exploring the Project Gutenberg website, try the:

7. ManyBooks

ManyBooks offers discounted and free e-books, with more than 50,000 free titles. There is some overlap with Project Gutenberg’s offerings, although the ManyBooks website is arguably more user-friendly.

From the home page, you can use the search bar or browse by genre or author , among other options.

8. University of Chicago Press

The “ Free E-book! ” page on the University of Chicago Press website offers one free title each month. You’ll need to share your email address to receive a link for downloading it.

The University of Chicago Press publishes mostly scholarly work, but that is not all it is known for. As it says :

“We publish significant non-scholarly work by writers, artists, and intellectuals from within and beyond the academy; translations of important foreign-language texts, both historical and contemporary; and books that contribute to the public’s understanding of Chicago and its region.”

9. IntechOpen

IntechOpen considers itself the world’s leading publisher of open-access books. Its focus is scientific publications, with thousands of open-access books in fields that include physical sciences, engineering, technology, life sciences, health science and social science.

10. Standard Ebooks

If you feel like old public domain books lose something in the translation to ebooks, you’re not alone — and you should check out Standard Ebooks .

The volunteers of this site add extra love and polish to the kind of stuff you’ll find on Project Gutenberg and elsewhere, adding modern typography, pop-up footnotes and attractive cover art. The site says:

“Standard Ebooks takes ebooks from sources like Project Gutenberg, formats and typesets them using a carefully designed and professional-grade style manual, fully proofreads and corrects them, and then builds them to create a new edition that takes advantage of state-of-the-art ereader and browser technology.”

11. Loyal Books

Loyal Books is another source for free e-books and audiobooks. Its collection of public domain books can be sorted by genre and language. Some pages seem to only display audiobooks, but there is usually a menu near the top of the page where you can toggle the “book type.”

The site does contain paid book options, but they are listed near the bottom of the sidebar in a separate section you probably won’t accidentally stumble into.

12. Open Library

Open Library , operated by the Internet Archive, aims to “create a web page for every book ever published.” So far it offers 1.7 million of them, searchable by subject. It also allows users to keep a reading log to track the books you’ve read or want to read.

BookBub is an e-book storefront that helps you find deals you’re interested in. If the best deal for you is “free,” there is a whole section of limited-time freebies , sorted by popularity and including those marked as site editors’ picks.

14. Smashwords

Smashwords is an e-book publishing platform with over 100,000 free e-books and many more you can buy. It features self-published work from more than 160,000 authors . While there’s no guarantee of quality, there’s no question you can find something new and interesting to read.

15. Free e-book events

There are certain special occasions for e-book lovers to take note of, because they’re a great time to stock up on new books for free. Don’t miss these:

• Stuff Your Kindle Day : Four times a year, you can grab a selection of themed books for free. While advertised as being for Kindle owners, you can read on any device. We explain how in “ This Trick Lets You Read E-Books Without an E-Reader .”
