A Note on Format

As you can see in the letter above, Mary formats her cover letter in a traditional way. She includes her name and address at the top, followed by the date and name and information of the hiring manager. 

This is a great approach if you're sending your cover letter by hard copy or as a Word attachment. For a lot of jobs, though, it's fine or even preferred to send your cover letter right in the body of an email. Still other jobs use their own application portal and want you to paste your information into a text box.

In the latter two cases (body of the email and text box), it's usually fine to leave out all these headers. You can just start right in by addressing the hiring manager. Make sure you understand how to send your application materials and format your cover letter accordingly!

  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you’ve opened up the cover letter with a warm greeting to start building a relationship, it is time to identify which role you want to apply for.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so you need to ensure you apply to the correct one.

Be very specific and use a reference number if you can find one.

We are searching for a Content Editing Associate to join our editorial team. The position requires an individual with very strong organization, communication, and time management skills, as well as someone with close attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills. Prior medical experience and medical knowledge are not required. You will be reporting to the Content Editor.

Responsibilities

Your main tasks are as follows:

  • Working closely with one or two physician deputy editors (DEs) to guide progress in an assigned medical specialty.
  • Maintaining frequent contact and developing relationships with external specialty authors, editors, and peer reviewers.
  • Carefully documenting content developments and workflows in the proper databases.
  • Styling and formatting original manuscripts
  • Reviewing and tracking graphics, and coordinating with Graphics and Permissions teams
  • Sending content to a variety of external contributors for review; setting deadlines and following up to ensure timely responses.
  • Incorporating contributor revisions for specialty DEs to review.
  • Proofreading, checking links and references, and finalizing topics and graphics for publication; ensuring content is error-free and consistent with UpToDate’s style guidelines.
  • Addressing all editorial tasks promptly. .
  • Carefully tracking progress toward annual goals and providing accurate monthly reports to indicate completed and in-process work.

Re: “Player’s promise to teacher goes viral — Praise-filled letter in the fourth grade is impetus for a special moment,” Saturday news story.

Comic strips and teachers, we can learn from them all. I reveled in reading the Bland Middle School students’ letters thanking their favorite teachers. Though in my 93rd year, I’m sure I can name every teacher I had — good or bad — from grade one through senior year of high school, so important were they in shaping my life!

To then read the front-page article of Ennis Rakestraw Jr.’s letter sent to his fourth grade coach Derek Gammon and learn what an impact that letter had on the coach’s life was heartwarming, to say the least.

Finally, I, like de Vinck, was forbidden to read comic strips as a young child. And, like de Vinck, I read all of my cousin’s comics. And to this day, my only two must-reads are Peanuts and Family Circus , both offering life lessons.

I will never forget the day when my ninth grade government teacher, Mrs. Fawcett, got my attention in a lesson on tough love. I was a student at Lakehill Preparatory in East Dallas.

One warm spring day, I leaned back in my chair while counting the holes in the ceiling tile above me. Suddenly, like a clap of thunder, Mrs. Fawcett slammed her hand down upon her podium. The room shook with a mighty force. The windows rattled, and I do believe that paint chips flew off the walls. Several other lollygagging classmates and I bounced upright at our chairs like we had been shot out of a cannon.

In a thundering Zeusian voice, Mrs. Fawcett bellowed, “Mr. Norton! If you want to fail my class, you’ll have to try harder than that, so you might want to make it easy on yourself and pay attention!”

“Yes, ma’am,” I meekly replied.

I will never forget that fateful day. She died several years ago, and I never got the opportunity to thank her for that lesson because I knew that she cared about me and her students. Today, I teach high school government and I think of her often.

Thank you, Mrs. Fawcett. You meant so much to me.

I never fail to read de Vinck’s columns, and he never fails to impress me in many different ways.

I’ve been a newspaper reader, including the comics, most of my life. I remember lying prone on my grandmother’s living room floor reading either The Houston Chronicle or The Houston Post , including the comics pages. I also read comic books when I could. My first periodical subscription was for Donald Duck comic books!

This column brought me so much joy. Thank you, Mr. de Vinck, for the memories!

DART could clean up

Re: “Crisis may put target on DART — City could consider diverting funding to address pension gap,” Saturday news story.

Does DART really have the funds to tackle the city’s pension crisis? I think not. We rode the DART train to the Stars game on Wednesday from the Mockingbird station. First of all, the down escalator was not working. Second, the elevator was filthy, and, third, the platform was trash-strewn.

When we returned to the station after midnight, the up escalator was not working, so we again got on the elevator, which did not have any lighting (and not a DART officer in sight). I can’t imagine how much worse DART rail would suffer if it cut any percentage of sales tax funding. Just shifting mismanagement of one entity to another will not solve the problem.

Was it planned or just a wild coincidence that the front page of the Saturday Metro Section had the story of Dallas assistant city manager taking a job in Topeka while on the Editorial Page the cartoon depicts Dorothy returning to Oz, complaining of having to pay $1,400 a month for an apartment in Topeka? Was the cartoon a too little, too late plea for Robert Perez to stay put in Dallas?

With a reported $250,000 salary, I’ll bet he will find nice affordable housing in Topeka. Congratulations and good luck, Mr. Perez, on the advancement of your career. Just wondering if the cartoon may backfire as potential new hires discover that they will need to spend $3,500 a month for a nice Dallas apartment.

Geophysical Research Letters is a gold open access journal that publishes high-impact, innovative and timely communications-length articles on major advances spanning all of the major geoscience disciplines.

The paper, “ Causes of Higher Climate Sensitivity in CMIP6 Models ,” was co-written with Mark Zelinka, a research scientist for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory at the University of Washington. The paper discusses the ability to predict how much the earth warms in response to changes in greenhouse gas using Earth system models (ESMs).

“I was really pleased to see this paper selected by the Geophysical Research Letters editorial board,” says McCoy, who works in UW’s Department of Atmospheric Science. “At the time when Mark Zelinka reached out to me to collaborate, it was clear that he had identified a big shift in how our models were representing future climate and that it was important to disseminate it to the community.”

Other contributors to the paper were Timothy Myers, who works in the Physical Sciences Laboratory at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Paulo Ceppi, a senior lecturer of climate science at Imperial College London; and Stephen Po-Chedley, a research scientist; Peter Caldwell, Climate Modeling Group leader and staff scientist; Stephen Klein, an atmospheric research scientist; and Karl Taylor, director of the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison, all of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

“When I saw the initial results that cloud feedback had gotten more amplifying in the latest models, I immediately reached out to Daniel for his help in interpreting them since his previous work had greatly influenced my thinking,” Zelinka says. “He provided useful calculations to strengthen our case that changes in the cloud liquid content were a key part of the story in leading to a new class of highly sensitive models.”

The group found that the temperature response to an abrupt quadrupling of atmospheric CO 2 has increased substantially in the latest generation of global climate models relative to previous generations. This is primarily because cloud water content and coverage decrease more strongly with global warming, causing enhanced planetary absorption of sunlight -- amplifying feedback that ultimately results in more warming. Differences in the physical representation of clouds in ESMs drive this enhanced sensitivity relative to the previous generation of models.

“It was really exciting to be part of this study. What Mark and my co-authors showed in this paper is that an important source of ESM uncertainty on a time scale that matters to the near future are these difficult-to-treat, small-scale processes, such as clouds, convection, aerosol and precipitation,” McCoy says. “It allows us to identify and target specific processes that have a lot of leverage on our predictions of future climate for observations and for continued model development and evaluation.”

Since its publication in 2020, the paper has exceeded 1,000 citations, placing it in the top 1 percent of geoscience articles.

UW will host a US Climate Variability and Predictability workshop, titled “ Micro2Macro: Origins of Climate Change Uncertainty ,” Oct. 28-30. The workshop will address issues related to McCoy’s representation of microscale processes in global ESMs.

McCoy is director of the Perturbed Physics Ensemble Regression Optimization Center for ESM Evaluation and Development ( PROCEED ), a collaboration among the UW Department of Atmospheric Science; the UW School of Computing; the University of Hawaii-Manoa; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. PROCEED seeks to leverage UW’s unique access to the National Center for Atmospheric Research-Wyoming Supercomputing Center to reduce uncertainty related to subgrid phenomena in ESMs.
