In addition to the on-campus creative writing courses offered throughout the year, special January term and summer programs offer students a chance to study intensively and generate new writing in Florence, New York, and Paris.

Creative Writing: Introduction to Prose and Poetry CRWRI-UA 815  Formerly Creative Writing: Introduction to Fiction and Poetry. Identical to CRWRI-UA 9815. Not repeatable for credit. Workshop. An exciting introduction to the basic elements of poetry and prose, with in-class writing, take-home reading and writing assignments, and substantive discussions of craft. Structured as a workshop: students receive feedback from their instructor and their fellow writers in a roundtable setting and should be prepared to offer their classmates responses to their work.

Creative Writing Internship CRWRI-UA 980 Prerequisites: a declared minor in creative writing, two CRWRI-UA courses or the equivalent, and approval of the program. An internship may not be used to fulfill the minimum requirements of the minor. For full policies, registration procedures, and the application form, please visit the program's website. Offered in fall, spring, and summer. 2 points. Requires 8 to 12 hours of work per week. Must be with an external (non-NYU) organization related to creative writing (e.g., a literary agency, magazine, publisher, or outreach program) and should involve some substantive aspect of writerly work. Requires a final five- to seven-page report, and an evaluation is solicited from the intern's supervisor. Grading is pass/fail. Students are responsible for finding the internship and receiving program approval before the end of the Albert add/drop period each term.

Writers in Paris: Fiction or Poetry CRWRI-UA 9818   (Writers in Paris: Fiction), CRWRI-UA 9819 (Writers in Paris: Poetry) Application required. Workshop. Offered in the summer. 8 points per course. Offer poets and fiction writers an opportunity to experience the writer's life in Paris. Students participate in daily workshops and craft classes, are mentored by accomplished professional writers, and attend readings and special seminars led by Paris-based writers and editors. Assignments encourage immersion in the city. Students work intensively to generate new writing and also attend a lively series of readings, lectures, literary walking tours, and special events. May be repeated once for credit.

Writers in Florence: Fiction or Poetry CRWRI-UA 9828   (Writers in Florence: Fiction), CRWRI-UA 9829 (Writers in Florence: Poetry) Application required. Workshop. Offered in the summer. 8 points per course. A literary retreat in Florence for poets and fiction writers. Students participate in daily workshops and craft classes, are mentored by acclaimed writers, and attend readings and special seminars on all aspects of the writer's life. Assignments are designed to encourage serious literary study, as well as immersion in the local landscape, and students are expected to work intensively to generate new writing. May be repeated once for credit.

A lot of professional writing for mass audiences is now done online, with blogs and Twitter being important places to communicate and persuade your audience (like this article is doing now and in this class you’ll learn whether or not meta commentary like this helps your content marketing). In this class, you’ll get hands-on experience working with professional content writers to help you set goals, build marketing strategies and create a voice for your company or organization. We have developed our own teaching method, which gives students the opportunity to “try on” many different narrative approaches. In the process of studying and trying out the techniques found in a wide array of published work, students end up discovering their own material and voice. Gotham Writers’ Workshop

You’ve probably seen flyers for the Gotham Writers Workshop before. There’s a good reason that they’re so well-known, too. They specialize in reading, responding to, and promoting the work of writers at every stage in their evolution, with new classes opening all the time. Consummately affordable and offering everything from fiction and nonfiction to comedy writing and screenwriting, Gotham is the city’s premiere writing workshop.

The Writers’ Studio New York

Poets in particular might want to consider The Writers’ Studio , founded in 1987 by Philip Schultz, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning poet. Informal classes in Brooklyn and Manhattan work to establish trust between students, giving them an immediate community with which to work throughout their careers. Unlike some courses, The Writers’ Studio begins with a Level I class that establishes a common foundation before moving on to other levels of skill, making it a readymade progression that admits amateurs and releases them as professionals.

Cooper Union

The Cooper Union Summer Writing Program takes a unique approach to writing, offering students a three-week course between high school and college that promises to instill essential essay-writing and textual-analysis skills that bridge the gap between entry-level and university-level argument-driven writing. Classes are offered in July for a current fee of $2,500, with an online option for $1,400.

92nd Street Y

The 92nd Street Y is a cultural landmark and they offer open-enrollment courses (with scholarships) for memoirists, critics, poets, and fiction-writers. Offered through the Unterberg Poetry Center, these classes offer the fundamentals of writing both for teens and for advanced students year-round.

Feeling a sense of loss is central to the writing experience no matter what your background, and Lost Lit , based in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill, combines questions of identity and place with the passionate pursuit of literature. Founded by Lynne Connor, they emphasize work by writers who feel left out of the current literary environment and work to nurture their sense of voice through intensive, informal workshops that offer specialty classes in writing from grief and “adoption”, meaning those who write to reclaim their identity in unfamiliar surroundings.

The Fiction Writing Workshop is designed for students who have little or no experience writing imaginative prose. Students are introduced to a range of craft concerns through exercises and discussions, and eventually produce their own writing for the critical analysis of the class. The Poetry Writing Workshop is designed for all students with a serious interest in poetry writing, from those who lack significant workshop experience or training in the craft of poetry to seasoned workshop participants looking for new challenges and perspectives on their work. This course will introduce students to writing about visual art. We will take our models from art history and contemporary art discourse, and students will be prompted to write with and about current art exhibitions and events throughout the city. The modes of art writing we will encounter include: the practice of ekphrasis (poems which describe or derive their inspiration from a work of art); writers such as John Ashbery, Gary Indiana, Eileen Myles, and others who for periods of their life held positions as art critics while composing poetry and works of fiction; writers such as Etel Adnan, Susan Howe, and Renee Gladman who have produced literature and works of art in equal measure. We will also look at artists who have written essays and poetry throughout their careers such as Robert Smithson, Glenn Ligon, Gregg Bordowitz, Moyra Davey, and Hannah Black, and consider both the visual qualities of writing and the ways that visual artists have used writing in their work. Lastly, we will consider what it means to write through a “milieu” of visual artists, such as those associated with the New York School and Moscow Conceptualism. Throughout the course students will produce original works and complete a final writing project that enriches, complicates, and departs from their own interests and preoccupations.

The Young Adult (YA) publishing boom has changed the way we read—and write—coming-of-age stories. This course will introduce students to the elements that shape YA novels, and explore the fiction writing techniques needed for long projects, including narrative arcs, character construction, worldbuilding, and scene work. We’ll study work from a wide range of YA genres and authors, including Angie Thomas, Elana K. Arnold, Leigh Bardugo, Jason Reynolds, A.S. King, Elizabeth Acevedo, and more.

Students will begin to write and outline their own YA novel, and a variety of in-class writing exercises will support the development of each project. All students will workshop their own writing and respond to the work of others. By the end of class, students will have a portfolio of materials to draw from, and a richer understanding of the YA landscape and its possibilities.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Program overview.

The Creative Writing Program at The City College of New York is in its fourth decade. Since its inception some of the most distinguished writers in America have taught here at our West Harlem campus, including Donald Barthelme, Gwendolyn Brooks, Kurt Vonnegut, Marilyn Hacker, William Matthews, Grace Paley and Susan Sontag. The mission of our program is simple: We want every student to find his or her unique voice, whether through fiction, nonfiction, drama, screenwriting, experimental or genre fiction and/or poetry, while simultaneously preparing them for life beyond graduate school as writers, teachers and scholars. Graduates of the Creative Writing Program at The City College of New York have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the Pushcart Prize, the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Fulbright Award, the O. Henry Award, a Grammy Award and more.

The legacy continues with recent alumni having work published by Simon & Schuster, St. Martin’s Press, Ampersand, Lyons Press, as well as having a presence on the New York Times Best Sellers list. In a program curriculum of advanced writing workshops and courses in English and American Literature, our distinguished faculty is dedicated to the intellectual growth and literary success of our students.

Finally, despite its prime location and storied past, the City College’s MFA program is dedicated to remaining at a fraction of the cost of similar programs in New York City. We welcome our MFAs to attend the program at their own pace as full-time or part-time students. We believe in access and opportunity not for just a select few, but for all those who believe in the life of literature and who take the craft of writing seriously.

Half-Day Workshops (In-Person and Online)

In both multi-genre and themed workshops, writers in age-based groups work with a published author or produced playwright (highly trained in teaching the form, genre, or topic). Participants discuss, share, develop, and complete their own original works.

Half-Day workshops meet Monday-Friday for 3-hours per day. Workshops are age-based and enroll a maximum of eight writers. Offerings include Creative Writing , Essay Writing , College Essay , Language Play (for ages 4-6), Screenwriting , Dungeons and Dragons , and more!

Full-Day Camps (In-Person)

Full-Day Camps are in-person programs that include a three-hour morning workshop, an hour-long lunch break, and a three-hour block of electives or specialized activities. 

Fiction & Fun

In the mornings, writers work with a published author or produced playwright on developing and completing a piece of writing of their choosing, such as a short story, personal essay, poetry collection, or a one-act play. After the morning workshop, writers will head to a nearby park for lunch and fun outdoor activities.

In the afternoon, writers participate in two electives of their choice, ranging from filmmaking, songwriting, Dungeons and Dragons, zinemaking, worldbuilding, graphic novels, and more!

Playwriting & Performance

Young playwrights spend the mornings developing brand new plays or musicals under the guidance of a professional playwright. In the afternoons, they dive into the world of performance, with mini-workshops in character creation, theatrical design, voice and speech, and a look at acting fundamentals as they take on roles in their peers’ plays. The week will culminate in a live performance (that family and friends can watch) of original one-act plays written and performed by these young dramatists of tomorrow.

Sports Writing

Writers spend the morning in a sports-themed writing workshop where they can explore and write every form of sports writing, from reviews, to features, op-eds, and personal essays. In the afternoon, camper eat lunch in the park, participate sports and active electives, and join creative arts electives with our Fiction & Fun campers. There will also be opportunities to go on field trips to live sports events, interview athletes, and meet professional sports editors and writers.

Advanced Writing Seminar (In-Person and Online)

Advanced Writing Seminar sessions are immersive, application-only programs for dedicated rising juniors, seniors, and college freshmen. Workshops are led by professional published writers and include master classes with guest instructors who are experts in their specialized field. This program is designed for teens to build up their writing portfolios and/or complete long-form projects such as novels.

Half-Day Sessions (Online)

Online half-day sessions are two-week programs that specialize in either portfolio-building or outlining and completing novels.

Full-Day Sessions (In-Person)

Full-Day sessions are one-week programs that focus on helping teens expand their writing portfolios.

The Residency in NYC

Advanced Writing Seminar: The Residency in NYC is an immersive pre-college program in partnership with Pratt Institute. Teen writers will spend the mornings in writing workshops, the afternoons in Master Classes, and the evenings in excursions and activities around New York City!

Full-Day camps are offered in-person at our Manhattan, Brooklyn, and DC labs.

Each day will begin with a small author-led fiction workshop (8-10 participants) from 10 AM to 1 PM Eastern Time. During workshop, writers will have time to develop their own creative pieces, participate in creative writing exercises, and receive feedback on their work from the instructor and their peers. In the afternoons, writers will have the opportunity to take electives in poetry, memoir, ekphrastic writing, and more. Writers will also take part in evening readings, salons, and craft talks, as well as unstructured time to connect as a community of writers.

Advanced Writing Seminar sessions are offered online, in-person at our Manhattan and DC labs, and one special session will be offered as an overnight camp in NYC .
