Physics is a compulsory subject in CBSE Class 12 science stream and is essential for both medical and non-medical science stream students. There will be five sections in the 2024 CBSE Class 12 Physics exam, and the last section E will comprise two case study-based questions of 5 marks. However, physics is challenging for all students due to its conceptual and numerical-based nature. Physics requires a clear understanding of the fundamentals, memorisation of several formulas, derivations and expert calculation skills plus the ability to apply them to tricky questions. All this requires practice but not blind practice. You must know which topics are important and which chapters are frequently asked in the exam.

Ques. 1  An ammeter and a voltmeter are connected in series to a battery with an emf   of 10V.   When a certain resistance is connected in parallel with the voltmeter, the reading of the   voltmeter decreases three times, whereas the reading of the   ammeter increases two times.

Answer: (3) 3 ohm

Ques. 2 Given figure shows a metal rod PQ resting on the smooth rails AB and positioned between the poles of a permanent magnet. The rails, the rod, and the magnetic field are in three mutual perpendicular directions. A galvanometer G connects the rails through a switch K. Length of the rod = 15 cm, B = 0.50 T, resistance of the closed loop containing the rod = 9.0 mΩ. Assume the field to be uniform.

(a) Suppose K is open and the rod is moved with a speed of 12 cm s-1 in the direction shown. Give the polarity and magnitude of the induced emf. Physics / XII (2020-21)

(b) Is there an excess charge built up at the ends of the rods when K is open? What if K is closed?

(c) With K open and the rod moving uniformly, there is no net force on the electrons in the rod PQ even though they do experience magnetic force due to the motion of the rod. Explain.

(d) What is the retarding force on the rod when K is closed?

(e) How much power is required (by an external agent) to keep the rod moving at the same speed (=12 cm/ sec) when K is closed? How much power is required when K is open?

(f) How much power is dissipated as heat in the closed circuit? What is the source of this power?

(g) What is the induced emf in the moving rod if the magnetic field is parallel to the rails instead of being perpendicular?

(a) EMF = vBL = 0.12 0.50 x 0.15 = 9.0 mV; P positive end and Q negative end.

(b) Yes. When K is closed, the excess charge is maintained by the continuous flow of current.

(c) Magnetic force is cancelled by the electric force set-up due to the excess charge of opposite signs at the ends of the rod.

(d) Retarding force = IBL

• e) Power expended by an external agent against the above retarding force to keep the rod moving uniformly at 12 cm s' = 75 x 10 -3 x 12 x 10 -2 = 9.0 x 10 -3  W

When K is open, no power is expended.

(f) I 2  R = 1x1x 9 x 10 -3  = 9.0 x 10 -3  W

The source of this power is the power provided by the external agent as calculated above.

g) Zero: motion of the rod does not cut across the field lines. [Note: length of Pg has been considered above to be equal to the spacing between the rails.]

It depends upon length, area of cross-section, nature of material and temperature of the conductor.

In second case I = 0.25 A; R=25 Ω

ε = 6.25 + 0.25 r ...(ii)

From equation (i) and (ii), r = 1 Ω

(iv) (a) Current in the circuit I= ε/ (R+r)

Power delivered to the resistance R is P = I2R = E2R/ (R+r)2

It is maximum when dP/ dR = 0

dP/ dR = E2[(r+R)2−R(r+R)]/ (r+R)4 = 0

or (r+R)2 = 2R(r+R) or R = r

(v) (b) For first case, ε/ (R+r) = 10/ R ...(i)

For second case, ε/ (5R+r) = 30/ 5R

Dividing (i) by (ii), we get r = 5R

Case study 1:

According to Maxwell’s electromagnetic equations it has been proved that electric and magnetic field vectors are perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the direction of propagation as shown in the figure below. If E x is the electric field along X axis, then B y will be the direction of magnetic field along y axis and both which are perpendicular to the z axis showing direction of propagation. The light waves are also the electromagnetic waves and may travels through vacuum also. So, we can find the velocity of a light traveling through the material medium having permittivity € and magnetic permeability u as V = 1/√ɛμ

In this way, we proved that velocity of light also depends on the electrical and magnetic properties of that medium through which it is traveling. The velocity of light which is constant everywhere is having value as 3*10 8 m/s.The most technological importance of electromagnetic waves is that they are having strong capacity to take energy from one place to another place. The best examples are radio waves, TV signals which also carry energy from their broadcasting stations. Also, life is possible on the earth only because of the sunlight coming from the sun to the earth which also carry energy and it is nothing but the electromagnetic waves. Due to which electromagnetic waves are considered as the transverse waves.

The electromagnetic spectrum consists of visible light, x- rays, gamma rays, microwaves, ultraviolet rays, radio waves and infrared waves. The waves used in radio and television communication are the radio waves having frequency range 500 kHz to 1000MHz.  In the ultrahigh frequency bands cellular phone uses the radio waves to transmit the voice. Microwaves are the waves having short wavelength. In aircraft navigation, for the radar system microwaves are used due to their short wavelength. Infrared waves are also called as heat waves. Infrared radiation has most importance in maintaining earth’s surface temperature through greenhouse effect. The infrared waves have vast application in real life such as infrared detectors are used for military purposes and also to see the growth of crops.  The waves which are visible to human eye are the visible rays. Visible rays are having frequency range as 4*10 14 Hz to 7*10 14 Hz. The huge source of ultraviolet light is the sun. Ultraviolet rays have wavelength range from 4*10 -7 m to 6*10 -10 m. X-rays are the rays having most importance in medical applications which are having wavelength range 10nm to 10 -4 nm. X-rays are used to destroy the living tissue and organisms in medical field. Then gamma rays are the rays having wavelength range as 10 -10 m to 10 -14 m which are the high frequency radiations mostly produced in nuclear reactions. Gamma rays are also used to destroy cancer cells in medical field.

Case Study 2: Self Induction. When a current I flows through a coil, the flux linked with it is φ = LI, where L is a constant known as the self-inductance of the coil.

Any change in current sets up an induced emf in the coil. Thus, the self-inductance of a coil is the induced emf set up in it when the current passing through it changes at the unit rate. It is a measure of the opposition to the growth of the decay of current flowing through the coil. Also, the value of self-inductance depends on the number of turns in the solenoid, its area of cross-section, and the permeability of its core material.
