A critical thinking exam presents a paragraph of information setting a scenario in the medical field. You're supposed to determine if the information is truthful from the statement. There are four ways the examiner tests your critical thinking;

Assumption:

In this scenario, the examiner wants you to evaluate the statement and conclude if the assumption is present . It's up to you to determine if the information provided has an assumption.

Example question : When administering medications, which statement is true regarding the "Five Rights" of medication administration?

a) Right patient means any patient who requests medication.

b) The right route ensures that the medication is administered as quickly as possible.

c) The right dose requires giving the highest possible dose to ensure effectiveness.

d) None of the options are correct.

Answer: (d) None of the options are correct.

Inference :

In the inference question, the examiner will present various inferences , and you will be asked to mention if the inferences are possibly true, absolutely true, possibly false, or absolutely false.

Question Example: When providing care to a patient, which statement regarding hand hygiene is true?

a) Hand hygiene is necessary only after direct contact with body fluids.

b) Hand hygiene should be performed before and after every patient interaction.

c) Hand hygiene can be skipped if gloves are worn.

d) Hand hygiene is primarily the responsibility of the nursing assistants.

Answer: b) Hand hygiene should be performed before and after every patient interaction.

Interpretation:

In this question type, the examiner asks you to interpret the passage in your own words and come up with a possible conclusion. You need to understand the information and create a conclusion based on the interpretation question.

Example Question : You are assessing a patient with a strict fluid restriction due to a medical condition. Upon reviewing the patient's intake and output records, you notice that the recorded fluid intake exceeds the prescribed limit consistently. What could be the possible reasons for this situation, and how should a nurse interpret and address it?

a) The patient is not adhering to the fluid restriction and is consuming liquids covertly.

b) Errors in recording or miscalculations in measuring the patient's fluid intake.

c) The healthcare provider has changed the patient's fluid restriction, but the records were not updated.

d) The patient's condition has worsened, requiring a relaxation of the fluid restriction.

e) The nursing staff intentionally provides additional fluids to improve patient comfort.

Correct Answer: The correct answer may vary based on the specific scenario and information available. However, a) The patient is not adhering to the fluid restriction and consuming liquids covertly, and b) Errors in recording or miscalculations in measuring the patient's fluid intake.

Analysis argument:

In such questions, you're presented with an argument, and you will determine if it's weak or strong. The argument that relates to a certain scenario is strong but weak if not directed.

Example Question:

In modern healthcare, the nurse's role has evolved significantly, with an increasing emphasis on technology and complex medical interventions. Analyze the following statement: "While technological advancements have undoubtedly improved patient care, they have also raised ethical concerns and potentially reduced the focus on holistic patient-centered care in nursing practice." Provide a well-structured argument supporting or refuting this statement, considering the ethical implications and the balance between technology and human touch in nursing.

Has Anyone Here Done Poorly on the ATI Critical Thinking Entrance Exam?

So I did pretty poorly on the ATI entrance exam for critical thinking.. I believe it was like a 62%... Which is less than the national mean. Got a 76 on my TEAS as well, which I know isn’t great.

I'm just kind of feeling down because it feels like I'm performing inadequately in a program where I feel I shouldn't be. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't discouraging.

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday we had to take ATI critical thinking test before we start our first semester on 25th. The college compares the scores of this test with that of TEAS and Pharm and identifies students who need help.

I did very bad in the critical thinking test (was quite surprised) and seeing my results, my morale hit rock bottom! What surprises me is that I did quite well in TEAS test and got an A in pharm and yet did so bad on yesterday's test.

I know how important critical thinking is and just with 3 days to start school I am flooded with doubt and feel demoralized. I was counting days to start the program... But I'm wondering can a person have so much disparity in their scores? Is it possible?

Well, I'm trying to be strong and remind myself that I haven't come so far to give up and will do my very best and get through the program. Thanks for letting me vent and I'm grateful to be a part of all nurses.

I know how you feel. I'm not in exactly the same situation, but I recently took the PSB exam for LPN school admission and did poorly one some areas.. areas I was expecting to do well in. My morale has dropped so much.

Just try to keep in mind that this one test is not the only measure of your abilities . Look at your other accomplishments - you did well in TEAS and had a fantastic grade in Pharmacology. You've done well in other areas. Scoring low on one test doesn't mean you are doomed for failure in your program. Try your best and keep your head up, please - I'm sure you'll be fine.

Scrubaway, just remember that you are in nursing school to LEARN to think like a nurse . You will be working on critical thinking skills the entire time you are in school. So don't be discouraged!

When I took the HESI entrance exam, there was a totally bogus critical thinking portion on it. It asked questions about which patient I would tend to first: the post-op patient with surgical pain, the diabetic whose blood sugar was too low, etc. I thought, "This is what I am going to school to LEARN! Why would they expect me to know this now?". So I decided right then and there that I wouldn't pay any attention to that part of my score. Thankfully, the school I applied to didn't count the critical thinking portion for or against any student, but used it as a diagnostic tool. But REALLY!

You'll be fine. Don't let one test result throw you off. It is NOT a measure of who you are or how good a nurse you will be. :)

Critical thinking is a bear, really. I graduated from another 4 yr college where we had to take a similar exam before school began but if you failed you had to take an entire semester of it! Now that's unfair (especially to the students not majoring in any sort of science). I barely passed (and I thought I was so freaking smart!)

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. I am taking the hesi critical thinking exam in a few hours (as it is my first day of nursing school) and I do not even know what to expect in this exam.

It is good to be reminded that one test will not determine our abilities to be a nurse. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses in certain areas and critical thinking will surely improve during nursing school and thereafter. This one test is not a measure of how smart someone is.

Today, was my first day of nursing school and inspite of last weeks anxiety, I was really excited. We had skills lab and had to demonstrate 3 skills and get it signed off. The best part...I did it on my first try (they were simple)!! It's just a tiny step towards many bigger things to come but I remembered the words of encouragement and went ahead. Thanks to everyone.

test taking is such a stressful situation. Keep your mind focused and confident in the material and have no doubt that you know the material. As soon as you have one doubt, your mind keeps doubting its self. Its the law of attraction. likes attract likes. Read the book "The secret" before testing again . Its short simple and can be applied to just about everything in life , but truthfully helped me establish better test taking strategies.

In our program you had to be an LPN or take the test with-in 6 weeks of starting school. They are challenging you with RN type questions. No matter what your score is It will only get better. You will be exposed to the tools you will need to make these decisions. Do not lement. it will all come together in the end.

Most of the areas that I tested on were okay except one: argumentation. I got a 438/1000 in argumentation.

I do not know why, or how, it did not give me an explanation after the test of how they came up with that score or what their definition of argumentation is and how it can be improved.

But it is less than half and I guess I am very horrible at making a point or something?

Available Testing

Rn fundamentals and critical thinking.

All students applying to the Associate Degree LVN-RN Transition or Paramedic-RN Transition pathways must complete the ATI RN Fundamentals exam and the ATI Critical Thinking Exam. These exams are administered by the Testing Services department (Rogers Student Center on TJC main campus OR at TJC West).

What is the RN Fundamentals Exam?

The ATI RN Fundamentals exam covers the fundamentals of nursing practice. Topics include foundations of practice, health-illness continuum, nursing throughout the lifespan, techniques for physical health assessment, supporting psychosocial health, and more.

What is the Critical Thinking Exam?

This  test  measures the ability to conceptualize, apply, analyze and evaluate information in order to reach a meaningful conclusion. This  test  comprises four question sets. Each question set has a time limit of three minutes and contains one question.

Steps to Registering for the ATI RN Fundamentals & Critical Thinking Exams:

1. Create a student account with ATI at www.atitesting.com

  • Click “create account” which is found on the right side of the home screen.
  • Select “Tyler JC Nursing TEAS” from the Institutions drop-down menu.
  • Create your username and password.
  • Keep this login information in a safe place; as this information will be required on the day of the test.  

2. To make an appointment with the Testing Center please go to tjctesting.setmore.com . Please note some firewalls may block directly linking to this site. If this happens to you, please open a browser and type in "TJCTesting.Setmore.com" and link to our booking page through this alternative option

3. When you arrive for your appointment, you need to pay a $25.00 proctoring fee. Payment can be made at the Testing Center. The Testing Center will accept checks, credit cards, money orders, or cash payments. Make sure you have the following items at your appointment:

  • ATI Username and Password
  • Appointment Confirmation Email
  • Proctor Fee Receipt
  • Valid Photo ID  

4. Once you are logged in to your ATI account and the proctor has entered in the password code, you will be required to make two online payments of $45.84 (taxes included) to ATI for the TEAS RN Fundamentals exam and $57.65 (taxes included) for the Critical Thinking exam NOTE: This will require a credit card or gift card. No debit cards are allowed. You need to pay before proceeding with the exam.

5. The ATI RN Fundamentals & Critical Thinking exams could take 3 hours to complete. Due to the length of the exam, we will not start a new TEAS exam within 3 hours of closing. For closing hours, you can visit  www.tjc.edu/testing .

You can access your exam scores by logging into your ATI student account at www.atitesting.com . Click on the “my results” tab in the top menu, this takes you to the proctored assessment page. You can then access your assessment report on any of your completed exams.

Accommodations

Students with disabilities that wish to request testing accommodations should contact Margaret Rapp, Disability Services Director, RSC 308, (903) 510 2878. In order to provide reasonable testing accommodations, requests must be made at least two weeks in advance of the testing date.

4 takeaways from the first presidential debate

If some people who listened to the radio in 1960 thought Richard Nixon won the presidential debate with John F. Kennedy, then maybe people reading the transcript of Thursday night’s match-up would think President Biden won.

But elections aren’t won in transcripts. The reality is, fairly or not, debates are often about optics — how the candidates present themselves, defend their records and parry attacks.

And that’s why so many Democrats are ringing the fire alarms after the first general-election presidential debate of 2024. The Biden campaign said the president had a cold to explain why he sounded so hoarse and weak. But Biden’s stumbles right from the beginning played into his biggest vulnerability — his age and whether the 81-year-old is up to the challenge of handling four more years in office.

There were issues for Trump, too, as he continued to spread falsehoods and bathe in the kinds of conspiratorial grievances that have turned off many voters.

Not much has changed the dynamics of this race; will anything that happened Thursday night make a difference either?

Here are four takeaways from the first Biden-Trump debate of this campaign:

1. First and foremost, let’s talk about the elephant in the room – Democrats have to be wondering if they’d be better off with someone else as their nominee.

Neither candidate is the official nominee yet. The national political conventions haven’t happened — but it’s next to impossible that Democrats would replace Biden.

Still, given he delivered the kind of performance Democrats feared, party leaders, strategists and many voters, frankly, had to be wondering during this debate what it would be like if any of a handful of other Democrats were standing on that stage.

Biden got a bit stronger as the debate went on, especially on foreign policy. He had some one-liners, like calling Trump a “whiner” when Trump wouldn’t definitively say that he would accept the results of the 2024 election. But Biden often wasn’t able to show vigor or consistently convey what he wanted to say. He simply couldn’t deliver the kinds of happy-warrior blows with that toothy smile audiences have seen from Biden in years past.

“Sometimes the spin don’t spin,” one Democratic strategist texted midway through the debate when asked for reaction.

2. If how Biden sounded wasn’t bad enough, the visuals might have been equally as bad.

An important rule of thumb for candidates — and moderators — in debates is to be conscious of how things look, of how you look, of what people are seeing at home. And what people saw — and this was predictable — was a split screen.

What to know about the key policies that got airtime in the presidential debate

Biden wasn’t able to use that to his advantage at all, even as Trump doled out falsehood after falsehood. Instead, he looked genuinely shocked and confused, which is never a good look.

Trump and his base might not care about late-night comedy, but this week’s monologues are going to sting Democratic voters.

3. The format — and hands-off moderators — benefited Trump.

The muting of the candidates was likely intended to make the debate calmer and not allow Trump to run roughshod over the moderators or his opponent. But it had the effect of making Trump seem more sedate than usual.

Trump employed rounds of verbal jujitsu, in which he threw back his own vulnerabilities and directed them toward Biden. He was even able at one point, during a strange exchange about golf handicaps, to say, “Let’s not act like children.”

The moderation, or lack thereof, also allowed Trump to spread falsehoods and hyperbole without being interrupted or corrected. CNN indicated before the debate that the moderators were not going to play a strong role in fact checking the candidates, and they lived up to that.

They left it to the candidates, essentially, and with Biden unable to deliver in real time and the moderators declining to, the audience was left with a salad bowl full of rotten eggs and moldy lettuce that passed for facts.

4. This debate might not move the needle much, if at all.

Despite Biden’s struggles, which will understandably get the headlines, Trump had some difficult moments, too, especially in the second half of the debate.

In addition to spreading myriad falsehoods, he did little to credibly defend his conduct on and before the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol; he used the kind of hyperbolic and vituperative language that has long turned off swing voters; and showed why many are concerned about some of his positions on the issues, especially on abortion and how the U.S. should be represented on the world stage.

So despite Biden’s shortcomings, millions will still likely vote for Biden, anyway, because he’s not Trump.

The bottom line is: Americans have said they are unhappy with their choices, and, in this – the biggest moment of the 2024 presidential campaign yet — it was clear why.
