How to convert a pdf file to powerpoint.

There are a couple of reliable methods for converting a PDF to PowerPoint. Here are the methods we recommend.

If you have a PDF file that you would like to convert to a PowerPoint presentation, you can download a program to quickly do the work for you, or you can use one of the many available online converters.

Adobe Acrobat has a couple of different software options for handling PDF files to choose from--- Acrobat Standard DC and Acrobat Pro DC. The standard version is for Windows only, while the pro version works with both Windows and Mac.

These run for $12.99 and $14.99 per month, respectively, so unless you’re already using one of these, it’s probably not worth the money just to convert a PDF file to PowerPoint. However, Adobe Acrobat is the best program on the market for anything dealing with PDF files, so we’d recommend subscribing to one if you frequently do any sort of work with PDF files.

Best yet, Acrobat Pro DC has a free trial , so if you’re unfamiliar with Adobe Acrobat, it costs nothing to give it a try.

In this example, we’ll be using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. Open the PDF file you’d like to convert. In the right-hand pane of the window, select “Export PDF”.

Now, you’ll be faced with a list of different export options. Choose “Microsoft PowerPoint” from the list and select “Export”.

In Windows Explorer (or Finder if you’re using Mac), select a location to save the file and select “Save”.

Open the newly saved PowerPoint and you’ll see the content of the PDF file (with each slide representing one page) in the preview pane.

There's certainly no shortage of online PDF converters---some free, some paid. We recommend Smallpdf because it’s quick, free, and keeps the format of the content pretty consistent. We’ll be using this online tool for this example, but the process isn’t too different between each converter, so feel free to play around and find one you like best.

With SmallPDF, all you need to do is drag and drop your PDF file on the converter screen, or you can use the file searcher. Whichever method you choose, once the file is uploaded, the conversion will automatically begin.

Once the conversion is complete, select “Download”.

After the download is finished, open the newly saved PowerPoint and you’ll see the content of the PDF file (with each slide representing one page) in the preview pane.

Creating a PowerPoint File From Within a PDF File

What to know.

  • Go to Adobe's online PDF to PowerPoint conversion tool. Click  Select a file > click Open when you find it and follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Acrobat Pro: In the PDF document, click  Export PDF . Select Microsoft PowerPoint from the Convert to dropdown menu. Click  Convert.
  • You need a paid subscription to Adobe Acrobat Pro (there's a free trial) to complete the process.

This article explains how to convert PDF documents to PowerPoint slides using the Adobe PDF to PowerPoint conversion tool in Adobe Acrobat both online and within a PDF document.

How to Convert PDF to PPT Using Abode's Free Conversion Tool

There are many reasons to convert a PDF file to a PowerPoint presentation. It could be as simple as creating a presentation from an existing document, or you may want to edit and add to the content in the PDF document to make a presentation. Whatever the reason, the easiest way to convert PDF to PPT is to use Adobe's online conversion tool.

The online conversion tool from Adobe is not free to use. You may be able to access it using a free trial, but you'll have to sign up for the service or lose access to your documents once the trial is over.

Go to the Adobe Convert PDF to PowerPoint tool online .

Click Select a file .

Navigate to and select the file you want to convert from PDF to PowerPoint, and then click Open .

The upload area will change to display a message that the file is first uploading and then converting. There's nothing for you to do but wait for the tool to complete.

When the conversion is complete, a preview of the PowerPoint file is displayed, and you'll get a prompt to sign in with Adobe, Google, or Apple. Enter the appropriate information to sign in.

Once you're signed in, locate the file in the list of Recent documents and click the three-dot menu at the right end of the file information line.

You may also see a listing for the file in the upper right corner of the page. If that's the case, you can simply click Download from there to download the file to your hard drive.

In the menu that appears, click the Download button to download the file to your computer.

One thing to keep in mind when you're converting files from PDF to PPT is that they may not always convert perfectly, especially for graphics-heavy files, like the one used in this example. The tool did not correctly convert some of the words. The conversion process works better with text and light graphics rather than heavy, complex ones.

You can also create a PowerPoint file from within the PDF file. Find and open the file you want to convert, and then follow these instructions.

In the PDF document, click Export PDF .

The file you have open should already appear in the Select PDF File text field in the menu that appears.

Select the Convert to : Dropdown menu and choose Microsoft PowerPoint .

Click Convert.

If you don't already have a subscription to Adobe Acrobat Pro, you'll get a prompt to sign up for one. There is a short free trial that you can use. If you already have a subscription to Acrobat Pro, or once you've signed up for the free trial, the file will begin converting.

Once the conversion is complete, you can click Save As and save the file to your hard drive or click View Converted Files to view the file online.

If you opt to try the Adobe Acrobat Pro free trial to convert your PDF to a PowerPoint document, don't forget to cancel the free trial before it ends so you don't get charged for it. The free trial is seven days, and as long as you cancel before the end of it, you won't have to pay.

How to Convert a PDF to PowerPoint Presentation

Want to converting a PDF to a PowerPoint presentation? It's difficult at the best of times, but these file converters try to do a good job of it.

PDFs are one of the most-used file formats in the world. However, they don't readily lend themselves to being used in PowerPoint presentations.

Of course, it's unlikely you'd want to turn a 100-page academic paper into a slideshow, but PDFs aren't only used for text. Plenty of graphs, charts, and images are also distributed in the PDF format .

So, if you have an informative PDF file that you'd love to turn into a presentation, keep reading. We're going to show you how to convert a PDF to a PowerPoint file, then offer a few formatting tips that'll help to make it shine.

As with most file format conversions, there are two ways you can turn a PDF file into a PowerPoint file. You can either use a web app or a desktop program.

Web App: Smallpdf

With a bit of digging, you will be able to find quite a few tools that can turn a PDF document into a PPT file. However, we like Smallpdf. In our testing, it was the most reliable and returned the most impressive results.

The app has some other significant benefits that users will appreciate. Firstly, it's entirely free to use. Secondly, Smallpdf does not retain any of your files on its servers (it retains your file for one hour in case you want to download your conversion multiple times). Finally, it's entirely web-based; you don't need to install anything on your machine.

To begin your conversion, head to the Smallpdf website. Using the navigation bar at the top of the window, go to All Tools > Convert from PDF > PDF to PPT .

You should now see a yellow box on your screen. There are three ways to add the file you want to convert into the web app. You can upload a file from your computer (by dragging-and-dropping or clicking Choose File ), add a file from Google Drive (by clicking on From Google Drive ), or add a file from Dropbox (by selecting From Dropbox ).

Note: If you want to add a file from Google Drive or Dropbox, you will need to give Smallpdf permission to access your account. If you're uncomfortable doing so, download the PDF in question onto your computer, then re-upload it to the web app.

Once you have selected your file, the upload process will begin. Depending on the size of your PDF, it could take a few minutes.

As soon as the upload is complete, the conversion process will start. Again, the amount of time it takes will vary depending on the size of your original PDF.

Eventually, you will see the results screen. You can either download your new PowerPoint file directly onto your computer, or you can save it to Google Drive or Dropbox.

If you want to convert a second document, just click Start Over .

Desktop App: Wondershare PDFelement

Before you keep reading, a word of warning. There are no worthwhile free apps for converting a PDF to a PowerPoint file on your desktop.

The developers' logic is simple: Very few people need to make the number of conversions that would warrant needing a dedicated desktop app, and those that do are probably using the tool in a professional environment.

So, which app is best?

Well, Smallpdf also offers a desktop app for converting PDF into PowerPoint presentations, but it's a new app and doesn't yet offer the same number of features as some of its more established competitors.

The two most well-known desktop PDF converter tools are ILovePDF (offers a 15-day trial) and Adobe Pro DC (offers a seven-day trial). Thereafter, for both PDF tools you will need to pay for a license.

If you're looking for a clear "winner," it's hard to argue against Acrobat Pro DC. However, it will set you back $14.99 per month. If you only make occasional conversions, the cost of the subscription is hard to justify.

Feature-wise, you can use the Adobe Pro DC app (and thus make conversions) from any device, select which parts of the PDF file you want to convert, and set up pre-defined PPT formats.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, try Wondershare PDFelement.  It still costs $ 59.95 , but it's a one-time fee for a lifetime license. Again, a trial period is available, so you can try before you buy.

To convert a PDF file into the PPT format, fire up the app and open the original file. Next, click on the Home tab and select To Others on the right-hand side of the ribbon. A save dialogue will pop up. Select PPT in the Save as Type dropdown menu and hit Save . The conversion might take a few minutes, depending on the size of your file.

Other apps to consider include:

  • Nitro ($159.99 one-time fee)
  • ILovePDF Solid Converter ($99.95 one-time fee)
  • Foxit PhantomPDF ($7.99 per month or $129 one-time fee)
  • SodaPDF ($48 per year)

Editing Your PDF

Given the nature of file conversion, the simpler you can make the original, the better the converted file will look.

Of course, if the PDF's original author has locked the file for editing, you might not be able to do much about it. However, if you can edit the original file , strip out any content that you don't need in your presentation. You should especially try to remove (or tweak) any overlapping elements as much as possible.

You will find that removing overlapping elements will make it easier to edit the converted PPT file. The conversion software will try to identify all the elements on your PDF's page and make them individually editable. Overlapping content increases the likelihood of the software incorrectly recognizing each content item.

No PDF-to-PowerPoint Solution Is Perfect

Whenever you're converting PDF files into the PowerPoint format, you need to remember that the final product is unlikely to be perfect.

PDF conversion is difficult at the best of times, especially when converting between formats as different as PDF and PPT.

All conversion software is only making a guesstimate of how the file should look. You always need to be prepared to do a reasonable amount of post-conversion editing if you're planning to use your presentation in a professional environment and want to avoid slideshow mistakes .

If you're starting to think that converting a file from PDF to PowerPoint sounds like to much hassle, you could consider converting it into a Word file instead .

Dear Michael,

Export Handouts to Word I have is a feature we can export all the slides into Word. However, I have to say that there is no official way to revert Handouts to .pptx format file in PowerPoint or other Office applications. I think the tools provided by HansV are quick good choice.

However, you can sincerely post this requirement in PowerPoint UserVoice which is a specific platform for us to collect user's request. Your suggestion will help us improve our products and give users a better experience.

Your understanding is highly appreciated.

how to convert a pdf back to a powerpoint presentation

Insert PDF file content into a PowerPoint presentation

Content from a PDF file might be what you need for your presentation, but it’s not as easy to get content out of a PDF file as it is from many other document types. There are two options, which depend on how you want to use the PDF content:

To show content from a PDF on a slide     Take a picture of the part of a PDF that you want, and paste it on your slide.

To keep a PDF file as a support document for your presentation     Insert the entire PDF into the presentation as an object that you can open and view during your presentation.

Note:  Unfortunately, inserting PDF content is not possible when editing a presentation in PowerPoint for the web. You need PowerPoint 2013 or a newer version to follow these steps.

Insert PDF file content as a picture

Open the PDF that you want to insert a picture of, and then switch to PowerPoint.

Do not minimize your PDF window, and make sure it's the last window you have open before moving to the next step.

Make sure everything that you want to capture as a picture is visible in your PDF window. You may need to decrease the zoom level in your PDF to see everything you want to capture.

In PowerPoint, select the slide that you want to add the content to, and then, go to  Insert  >  Screenshot .

Note:  Depending on your window size, the Screenshot button may appear different.

Large Screenshot button

Your PDF file should be the first thumbnail image in the Available Windows list.

Below the thumbnail images, select Screen Clipping . PowerPoint minimizes and shows the window with the PDF file.

screen clipping drop down in powerpoint

When you stop dragging, the selected area appears on the PowerPoint slide as a picture. You can move it, resize it, crop it, and format it as you like by selecting it and using the Picture Tools Format tab.

Insert a PDF file as an object

Make sure the PDF file that you want to insert is not currently open on your computer.

In PowerPoint, select the slide that you want to add the file to, and then select Insert > Object .

object selection on insert tab

In the Insert Object box, select Create from file , and then enter the PDF file location; or select  Browse , find the PDF file, and then select OK .

Create from file selected in the Insert Object dialog box

This makes the PDF file part of the presentation file. The quality of the PDF file is reduced with this method, but you can open the full PDF file by double-clicking the image when viewing or editing in Normal view.

Note:  If you receive an error when trying to insert your PDF file as an object, make sure you do not have the PDF file open.

Open the PDF from a Slide Show

To open the inserted PDF file during a Slide Show, attach an action to it.

In Normal view, on the slide with the PDF file, select the PDF file’s icon or image, and then on the Insert > Links > Action .

Action button in the Links group

In the Action Settings box, select the Mouse Click tab if you want to open the PDF with a click, or the Mouse Over tab if you want it to open when you move the pointer over the PDF file icon.

Select Object action , and select Open in the list.

How to convert a PowerPoint presentation to Google Slides

M icrosoft PowerPoint and Google Slides are popular software solutions for creating presentations. While PowerPoint has more features, Google Slides offers seamless collaboration, cross-platform availability, and an easy-to-use interface without a subscription. When you receive a PowerPoint presentation, convert it to Google Slides to continue editing and collaborating on it.

Converting a PowerPoint presentation to the Google Slides format has advantages, but it isn't a smooth process. Formatting issues can occur. You can use Google Drive or Google Slides to convert a PowerPoint presentation. This trick is also helpful when using a PowerPoint template with Google Slides.

Although Google Slides has apps for iPhone and Android , we focus on the company's web version.

Convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides Using Google Drive

You can upload a PowerPoint presentation to Google Drive and open it in Slides. It's the easiest way to convert from PowerPoint to Google Slides.

  • Visit Google Drive on the web and sign in with your Google account details.
  • Go to a relevant location. Select New in the upper-left corner and select File upload .
  • Find your PowerPoint file (.pptx) in Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) and click Open .
  • After uploading the file, Google Drive converts your PowerPoint file, making it compatible with Google Slides. Double-click it to open it in Google Slides.
  • Or, right-click your PowerPoint file and expand the Open with menu. Select Google Slides .

Whether you use a .pptx or an older .ppt file, Google Drive automatically converts it to Slides. You can open it like a traditional Slides file and make changes.

How to add audio to your Google Slides presentation

Use google slides to convert a pptx file.

If you don't want to deal with Google Drive, you can import and use any PowerPoint file using Google Slides. Follow the steps below to make changes.

  • Go to Google Slides on the web and create a blank presentation. Or, type slides.new in the address bar and press the Enter or Return key.
  • Select File at the top and click Open .
  • The following menu shows your recent files and several online and offline locations where you can import a file. Move to the Upload menu.
  • Select Browse .
  • Find and select your PowerPoint presentation and click Open .
  • Google Slides converts and opens a PPT file in the Slides format.

There are times when you want to convert specific PowerPoint slides. Importing an entire presentation and deleting irrelevant slides isn't the most productive way. Instead, import selected slides using the steps below.

  • Open a blank presentation in Google Slides (check the steps above).
  • Click File and select Import slides .
  • Select Upload and click Browse .
  • Select your PowerPoint file and click Open .
  • Check the number of presentation slides and select the ones you want to import. Click Import slides .

Your PowerPoint slides are ready for editing in Google Slides.

Advantages of Converting a PowerPoint to Google Slides

Here are the benefits of converting a PowerPoint file to Google Slides.

Easy access

Google Slides is a web app. Whether you use Slides on Windows, Mac, Linux, or ChromeOS, you only need a web browser to access and edit your presentations. PowerPoint also has a web app, but it has limited features compared to its desktop app.

Real-time collaboration

Although Microsoft offers real-time collaboration on PowerPoint, the sharing experience isn't as good as Google Slides. One or more users can work on a presentation simultaneously, share comments, and check tweaks instantly.

Free to use

PowerPoint desktop apps require an active Microsoft 365 subscription. In contrast, Google Slides is free to use. If one of your team members or a colleague doesn't have a Microsoft 365 plan, convert the PowerPoint presentation to Google Slides and invite them for collaboration.

What's the difference between Google Slides templates and themes?

Convert a powerpoint to google slides: our observations.

PowerPoint is a more powerful and feature-packed tool than Google Slides. You may lose some of the features and formatting during conversion. For instance, Google Slides doesn't support curved text and vector graphics. You may need to rework these slides before sharing them with others.

When you convert specific slides, turn on the Keep original theme option to carry over your PowerPoint theme to Slides. Then, after converting a PPTX file to Google Slides, recheck the slides to eliminate minor formatting issues.

Complete and collaborate your presentation in style

Whether you use PowerPoint or Google Slides, your pitch requires interactive visuals and fancy animations to attract people's attention. A bland and static presentation won't impress your audience. Creating an engaging presentation from scratch can be time-consuming. Check the top Google Slides templates for personal and work use and finish your presentation quickly.
