New Technology Solution to Transform Recycling and Sustainable Waste Management with Machine Intelligence

Dr. Khalid Askar’s Research Not Only Tackles Plastic Pollution but Aligns with the UAE’s Plans to Divert 75% of Waste from Landfill  

A new technological solution to sort waste based on the actual properties of post-consumer materials, rather than relying solely on visual differences with the help of machine intelligence, is being developed by a team of researchers led by Dr. Khalid Askar, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Khalifa University, in collaboration with Cycled Technologies Middle East , a recycling technology company in the region.

As a novel step towards combating plastic pollution and promoting sustainability, the research project aims to transform the circular waste management model – addressing one of the world’s most pressing challenges – plastic pollution, an environmental concern which was of immense significance at the COP28 UAE climate summit.

Dr. Askar said: “By turning the concept of waste into the concept of value creation, the project also fosters a community-wide inclination towards recycling; significantly reducing the cost and environmental impact associated with implementing circular waste management practices. This project aligns perfectly with the UAE’s ambitious plans of diverting 75% of waste away from landfills, acting as a crucial enabler for this environmental goal. Another key highlight of the research project is to increase real-time traceability of post-consumer materials, paving the way for a fully digitalized and smarter waste management industry.”

Working with Ayoola Brimmo, Co-Founder and COO, Cycled Technologies, and Chia-Yun Lai, Research Assistant, Materials Science and Engineering, Dr. Askar seeks to extend the capability of existing waste sorting technology in the plastic recycling industry. By leveraging the power of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based machine learning AI algorithms, this new technology processes characterization data to define and detect surface contamination thresholds on plastic items.  

Ayoola Brimmo said: “With a vision to create a smarter and more environmentally responsible waste management industry, Cycled Technologies is delighted to partner with Khalifa University to transform the way we approach recycling and contribute to a more sustainable future. This research collaboration fosters a culture of innovation and technological advancement, and showcases our commitment to driving sustainable solutions and economic growth. More importantly, it addresses plastic pollution and promotes sustainable waste management practices, marking a crucial step forward in the region’s environmental and economic landscape.”

The project includes a prototype housed at the Masdar Institute Field Station, a Khalifa University research facility. This prototype utilizes a vent for intake of waste, which is then transported via a conveyor belt for compression, after which intelligent systems integrated into the prototype capture detailed images of the plastic properties. This enables the AI system to learn and identify the type of plastic present in the waste material. 

The prototype’s advanced sorting and classification process also has the potential to provide invaluable information for industries engaged in plastic recycling and reuse and as the AI system continues to train itself, the research can also enable identification of other materials beyond plastics. Additionally, portability may not be a challenge, as Dr. Askar’s team anticipates that the large size of the sorting technology will facilitate the collection of substantial quantities of plastic waste.

The implications of this research project extend far beyond waste management as it aligns with the Abu Dhabi 2030 strategy on economic diversification, bridging the gap between academia and industry, positioning the UAE as a high-tech hub for innovators.

Pleasants county solid waste authority plans electronics recycling event.

ST. MARYS — The Pleasants County Solid Waste Authority will hold its annual electronics recycling collection from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 20 at the Momentive Performance Materials Plant, 10851 Energy Highway, in Friendly.

All residents of nearby counties, non-profit groups and small businesses can drop off any broken or unwanted electronic equipment. Individuals or businesses with more than 20 items to recycle should call 304-652-8413 or 304-652-8350 to make special arrangements prior to the event.

This is the 16th year Momentive has hosted the electronics recycling collection. More than 580,000 pounds of electronics have been recycled to date.

The collection will be held regardless of the weather.

Products accepted include: AC adapters, portable air conditioners, batteries but no vehicle batteries, cell phones, computers and laptops with computer and laptop parts and components, docking station, electrical components, electrical motors, film and digital cameras, fans and electrical heaters, gaming systems, household electronics, ink and toner cartridges, keyboards and mice, LCD monitors and TVs, light ballasts, microwaves, shredders, small household appliances such as toasters, coffee makers, can openers and blenders, software, stereo and video equipment, residential and business telephones, transformers, two-way communications equipment, battery backups, wi-fi equipment and wire and cables.

Products not accepted are: large household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, hazardous materials such as mercury-containing lamps, thermostats and smoke detectors, household hazardous wastes, CDs, video or cassette tapes, light bulbs, intact CRT monitors and televisions only will be accepted as those previously stripped will not be accepted.

The event, free to the public, is a collaboration between Momentive Performance Materials, Pleasants County Solid Waste Authority, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and Scott Recycling of Knoxville, Tenn.

It is funded by the Covered Electronic Devices Grant Program, a grant program created by the passage of Senate Bill 746 in 2008 in West Virginia with additional funding, staffing and materials provided by Momentive.

SB 746 requires electronics manufacturers to register each year with the Department of Environmental Protect. Registration fees are deposited in the Covered Electronic Devices Take-back Fund to fund programs diverting covered electronic devices from the waste stream.

Apple uses AI to boost recycling efforts, Tim Cook confirms

The challenge to build a more sustainable enterprise is high on the business agenda these days, in part to meet government-mandated climate goals, in part because consumers demand it, and — perhaps — simply because turning a business into a sustainable business is the right thing to do.

Businesses are taking a multitude of approaches to becoming more sustainable.

Apple CEO Tim Cook in China explained part of the strategy being followed by his company — to put a little AI (artificial intelligence) in sust AI nability.

As he sees it, AI “provides an enormous toolkit for every company that’s wishing to be carbon neutral or to lower their emissions by a substantial amount," he said.

Sustainable business is good business

We know Apple is working hard to build a more sustainable consumer tech business . The company isn’t there yet, of course, but it continues to make more use of recycled materials, has its first claimed carbon-neutral product in the form of the Apple Watch, and is on a drive to develop circular manufacturing tech across its business by 2030. It is already carbon neutral across its own internal operations (including stores and offices).

The company also wants all companies to be required to be more transparent about their carbon output .

Its most recently released Mac, the MacBook Air, boasts new records for sustainability, as it is the first Apple product to be made with 50% recycled content. The company has a track record that puts it far ahead of competitors on this, and while no one is perfect, it has won praise from environmental activists for at least trying to do the right thing.

Cook echoes industry thinking

But Cook’s determination that AI has a part to play in delivering more sustainable business practises echoes emerging thinking across enterprises concerned with polishing their corporate social responsibility (CSR) credentials.

Microsoft’s AI for Earth program offers AI tools for ecosystem monitoring and management; Google’s DeepMind uses AI to improve energy management in data centers, delivering a 40% reduction in cooling costs; Nokia has its own AI aimed at carriers that is designed to reduce the cost and carbon emissions from network related energy consumption; the list goes on.

Just this month at Mobile World Congress, Cisco and European carrier Orange signed an agreement to work together toward Net Zero, including information sharing between both firms to help measure and mitigate those all-important Scope 3 emissions.

So, how might Cook’s Apple already be making use of AI to help manage its own emissions?

As I don’t keep any surveillance equipment in or near the CEO’s office, I can only speculate, but there are two clear ways in which AI could easily contribute to Apple’s Environmental CSR:

Reporting: AI can deliver far more accurate reporting from across complex supply chains than human workers can. Not only can it measure and track goods in transit, but it can estimate the environmental costs of manufacture, distribution, and final use.

The more accurate such estimates become, the easier it becomes to identify key areas in which changes can deliver difference. This is particularly important to manufacturers attempting to assess more complex “Scopes.”

Recycling: Tech can help manage tech. Used in waste management and recycling, AI can mitigate contamination and optimize the recycling process. This is one of the ways Apple is making use of AI to boost sustainability.

AI is fundamental to Apple’s recycling plans

“We would not be able to recover the level of material that we do today for recycling without AI,” Cook said , speaking at the China Development Forum. “I mean, it’s already fundamental in our calculation.”

He believes AI provides a set of tools that should help any company on a mission to become carbon neutral or to make significant sustainability improvements.

We don’t quite know how Apple uses AI in recycling, but I’m willing to take an educated guess that at least one component consists of machine vision intelligence-driven systems on waste-sorting lines.

We already know machines do a better/faster job than humans can or want to do on such challenges, and the health and safety concerns of handling recycled materials, particularly harmful materials, are reduced by getting machines to do the work. Not only this, but smart recycling systems can also provide real-time waste analytics.

Apple has a family of recycling robots already diligently tearing old iPhones apart. Its Daisy robots each process up to 1.2 million of these each year.

The big problem with automated recycling systems is training, but Apple’s recent investment in Darwin AI , in tandem with the features of visionOS , hint at future innovations in machine intelligence learning models.

What a difference an AI makes

While I remain sceptical that AI alone can tackle the challenges of carbon reduction and sustainability, Cook is correct that AI has a part to play.

A Microsoft-sponsored PwC report estimated that applied AI could reduce worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 4% in 2030, equivalent to the annual emissions of Australia, Canada, and Japan combined. This matters, given that the World Bank predicts global waste will increase by 70% by 2050.

“Put simply, AI can enable our future systems to be more productive for the economy and for nature,” said Celine Herweijer, Global Innovation and Sustainability Leader, PwC.

Further out, of course, one day your Mac will tell you when it needs repair before it actually breaks down. Indeed, in terms of Apple services, it’s reasonable to imagine that if you have Apple Care or Apple Business Manager, it may even book itself in for maintenance.
