Dear Colleagues,
Optical fiber communication systems have been deployed worldwide since 1980, and have revolutionized the field of telecommunications. The capacity of such systems has been continuously increasing. Over the last three decades, the aggregate bit-rate of optical transmission systems based on single-mode fiber (SMF) has increased by a factor of four orders of magnitude by means of multiplexing techniques that use time, wavelength, and polarization as a degree of freedom to encode information. In addition to multiplexing, coherent transmission techniques also allow to increase the aggregate bit-rate of optical communications systems by exploiting both the phase and the amplitude of the light to carry information. As today’s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) coherent optical communication has already taken advantage of all degrees off freedom of a lightwave in a single-mode fiber, further multiplicative growth must explore new degrees of freedom that do not exist in SMFs. In this context, space-division multiplexing (SDM), including mode-division multiplexing (MDM) using multimode fibers (MMFs) or few-mode fibers (FMFs) and/or core multiplexing using multicore fibers (MCFs), has attracted a great deal of attention in the last few years.
This Special Issue covers a large scope of research in the area of optical fiber communications, and solicits contributions in, but not limited to:
- Multichannel systems
- WDM components
- Space-division multiplexing
- Polarization-mode dispersion
- Multicore fibers
- Few-mode fibers
- Coherent optical communications
- Optical transmitters
- Optical receivers
- Optical amplifiers
- Dispersion-compensating fibers
- Dispersion-managed systems
- Pseudo-linear lightwave systems
- Soliton transmission systems
- Optical signal processing
- Nonlinear effects

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website . Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form . Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Fibers is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Methods for Estimation of Optical Fiber Non-Linearity Using Self-Phase Modulation Effect Due to ever increasing channel density in WDM systems the nonlinear optical effects in fibers become a limiting factor for the high-speed data transmission, which necessitates determination of such important characteristic as the coefficient of optical nonlinearity. To measure it, two methods are proposed: continuous wave self-phase modulation (CW-SPM) and pulse phase self-modulation (P-SPM). The research work has been carried out both in the form of calculations and experimentally, taking as wavelength the central one from the third optical transparency window, λ = 1550 nm. Based on the OptSim 5.2 simulations and experimental results, the sought-for nonlinear coefficients have been calculated. In the paper, comparative analysis and estimation of the results are performed for two different optical fibers.

This paper focuses on the recent research in optical communications and the effects of fiber non linearities in optical communication. Moreover, this paper covers the investigation on characteristics of optical fiber, modelling/analysis of fiber nonlinearities and laser effect on optical fiber in the literature. This paper also provides the information about the parameters, methodology and materials used in optical fiber. Here, most commonly used material is fiber laser and its advantages are increased output power, peak power and optical quality. This paper further describes several types of nonlinearity effects on the basis of various methodologies such as dual parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM), fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPA), Darboux transformation (DT) and scalar finite element method (SC-FEM) and many parameters are also discussed. Their applications are also discussed and relative study of these effects is presented. The primary purpose of this paper is to understand the effects of nonlinearities, and to encourage further research in this area.
