Today's general trend leans more towards awareness about healthy eating, organic foods, better lifestyle practices, and achieving fitness goals without excessive stress. Hence, it is still possible to take time out and gather information on building a healthier lifestyle. Technology itself has made it possible to stay updated and informed. To conclude, it can be said that while there are more distractions and hindrances today for people to stay fit, it is always possible to get proper guidance at the click of a button and lay the foundation for a healthier and happier life.

The Future of Health – IELTS Writing Task 2

In today’s lesson, I want to show you how to answer an agree or disagree question about health and the future. I will give you some useful language about the topic (health) and the necessary grammar (the future). I’ll also mention some important things about generating ideas and structuring essays.

Analysing the Question

Here’s our question for today:

The average standard of people’s health is likely to be lower in future than it is now. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement.

It’s taken from this list of IELTS writing questions , which I recommend to users of my writing correction service .

This question is pretty easy to understand. Basically, you choose whether you agree or disagree that people’s health will be worse in the future than it is now. You can either:

Strongly agree
Partially agree
Neither agree nor disagree
Partially disagree
Strongly disagree

Just make sure that your opinion is clear throughout the whole essay. Don’t forget to state your opinion clearly in the essay outline ! If you fail to do that, you will get a low score for Task Response.

Once you have chosen your opinion, you need to decide what ideas to include and how to include them – ie picking a structure.

Personally, I will agree with the statement and tell the reader why I think that health will be worse in the future. I will look at two ideas:

Eating habits.
Lifestyle choices.

Each of these will be given one paragraph and I will develop those with explanations. My essay will look something like this:

Introduction	Introduce the topic Give my opinion
Body paragraph 1	We have more food now People are becoming obese and diabetic Example: China
Body paragraph 2	Sedentary lifestyles These damage our bodies Children no longer go out to play
Conclusion	Summarise previous ideas

Note that I will expand all of these points with realistic detail and link them logically. You can see that in my sample band 9 answer below. I will be careful not to give too many ideas because that can make your essay more like a list. It is better to develop a few ideas logically.

Language about Health and the Future

Those will give you lots of words and phrases you can use to talk about health in the IELTS writing test.

For this essay, your language will obviously relate to your choices in terms of answer. For me, I have decided to cover diet and lifestyle, so there are many words and phrases I might need to use. I should definitely know a broad range of health conditions:

Heart attack
Back problems

You can learn more vocabulary and even gain useful ideas by reading about health on reputable websites. Here is a guide to healthy living by the World Health Organization. And here is another from the UK’s National Health Service.

Here are two sentences I will include in my essay, which relate to the different issues I want to discuss:

All around the world, fewer people are dying of starvation , but more people are dying from obesity and diabetes due to their sugary and fatty diets.
Back problems and joint pain are becoming increasingly common, while the lack of physical mobility is exacerbating the obesity issues created by our unhealthy diets.

You can see that I have mentioned various health problems.

You may notice that I have used present tenses here because my arguments about the future are primarily based on the present. I want to show how our current problems are indicative of potential future ones.

What I will do is gather most of my evidence and put forth my case that our health is currently declining, then make it clear in the introduction and conclusion that this signals worse problems in the future:

This essay will agree with that statement and give reasons why human health will continue to decline.
This will probably continue in future due to our unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles.

I think this is more effective than offering vague speculation throughout the whole essay.

Sample Band 9 Answer

It has been argued that the level of people’s health in the future will be lower than it is at present. This essay will agree with that statement and give reasons why human health will continue to decline.

Although medical technology is improving at a rapid pace, human health in most developed countries peaked several decades ago and has been in decline. This is because abundance has paradoxically created a situation where people are exposed to vast quantities of unhealthy food. All around the world, fewer people are dying of starvation, but more people are dying from obesity and diabetes due to their sugary and fatty diets. In countries that have only recently acquired wealth, this change is even more profound, and so millions of people in countries like China are suffering from utterly preventable health problems. This situation gets worse year after year.

Another related issue is that of lifestyle. Humans evolved to roam the plains of Africa and then adapted to an active agricultural lifestyle, but in the modern era we are confined to office chairs and car seats. Our bodies are not used to this sedentary lifestyle, and so they suffer greatly. Back problems and joint pain are becoming increasingly common, while the lack of physical mobility is exacerbating the obesity issues created by our unhealthy diets. With the advent of mobile phones and other technologies, even children no longer go outside much and so this idle lifestyle has infected the youngest members of society, threatening the very future of our species.

In conclusion, human health is on the decline in spite of developments in medicine. This will probably continue in future due to our unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles.

Some today contend that doctors should be responsible for wide-ranging advice on how their patients can achieve better health. In my opinion, though this is not technically the core job of a doctor, it should nonetheless be considered an essential duty.

Those who argue against this contention point out that doctors have more urgent priorities. Doctors must first of all accurately diagnose patients. This involves asking various questions, performing tests, and a misdiagnosis is a potentially life-altering event in the life of a patient. Once a patient has been diagnosed and the prognosis delivered, doctors must then focus on treatment options. Depending on the severity and the evolution of the illness, the doctor may need to focus intently during this period and possibly seek out a second opinion. If the hypothetical doctor described were also distracted by the mandate to give health advice, there is the small chance that this could hinder their primary duties.

Doctors can focus on diagnosis and treatment while also imparting general health advice without allowing these goals to interfere. As a result, the discussion essay , a part of the Writing Task 2 of the IELTS, is discussed here with an outline and vocabulary that will help you to prepare.

Some people say that the best way to improve public health is by increasing the number of sports facilities. Others, however, say that this would have little effect on public health and that other measures are required.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

Paraphrase the topic sentence using synonyms
Paragraph 1: Building sports facilities will motivate people to exercise and keep themselves fit.
Paragraph 2: Other factors like creating awareness, providing basic living conditions, etc. are more important for improving public health.

Conclusion

Summarize the topic and mention the final view.

Sample Answer

Reformation in public healthcare facilities has been a contentious issue for quite a long time. While some people propose that incorporating several sports facilities can work like a charm for the public health sector, others opine that health concerns many other factors that need equal precedence . In my opinion, the latter perception is more viable and I shall elaborate on the same in the following paragraphs.

It is a well-known fact that regular exercise and active involvement in sports keep an individual healthy in mind and body. As a result, many initiatives have been taken to augment the construction of yoga centers, gyms, public swimming pools, etc. Furthermore, they have been established for the public so that they can afford to engage themselves in such invigorating activities, which in turn, will create a robust population.

However, like a section of people, I believe that a sole focus on sports facilities will not have a consequential impact on public health. It is because a substantial number of the global population does not have access to food, safe drinking water and sanitation, which constitute the necessities of every human. As there is a shortage of the bare minimum requirements, health is adversely affected by malnutrition and ailments like marasmus, scurvy , xerophthalmia, to name a few. Moreover, there is a dearth of public awareness of a number of diseases or health conditions, some of which are fatal to life. Consequently, many people fall prey to them. For example, it took more than three decades to eradicate polio in most countries due to a lack of awareness and healthcare benefits. Likewise, in recent years, socio-economic issues like unemployment, inflation, etc., have created psychological pressure on every individual, resulting in mental disorders.

In conclusion, I would like to say that even though the government is taking steps to encourage people to improve public health, it is of utmost importance that instead of just investing in building sports facilities, we should be involved in bringing in a wholesome change in the public health sector by creating consciousness, increasing the availability of fundamental needs and supporting each other.

Meaning: strong and healthy

E.g.: We wanted our children to be robust rather than lazy.

7 consequential (adjective)

Meaning: important; significant

E.g.: There has been a consequential change in Ron’s behavior after the fight.

8 substantial (adjective)

Meaning: large in size, value, or importance

E.g.: A substantial number of people turned up for the protest.

9 dearth (noun)

Meaning: an amount of something that is too small: a lack

E.g.: As there was a dearth of rain this year, the crops did not grow well.

10 eradicate (verb)

Meaning: to get rid of something completely or destroy something bad

E.g.: The government plans to eradicate malaria in the next few years.

Surgeon General: Why I’m Calling for a Warning Label on Social Media Platforms

One of the most important lessons I learned in medical school was that in an emergency, you don’t have the luxury to wait for perfect information. You assess the available facts, you use your best judgment, and you act quickly.

The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours . Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.

It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe. Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes.

To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people. The advisory I issued a year ago about social media and young people’s mental health included specific recommendations for policymakers, platforms and the public to make social media safer for kids. Such measures, which already have strong bipartisan support, remain the priority.

Legislation from Congress should shield young people from online harassment, abuse and exploitation and from exposure to extreme violence and sexual content that too often appears in algorithm-driven feeds. The measures should prevent platforms from collecting sensitive data from children and should restrict the use of features like push notifications, autoplay and infinite scroll, which prey on developing brains and contribute to excessive use.

Additionally, companies must be required to share all of their data on health effects with independent scientists and the public — currently they do not — and allow independent safety audits. While the platforms claim they are making their products safer, Americans need more than words. We need proof.

The test taker has fully operational command of the language.
Their use of English is appropriate, accurate and fluent, and shows complete understanding.

8 Skill Level: Very good

The test taker has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage.
They may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations. They handle complex and detailed argumentation well.

7 Skill Level: Good

The test taker has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations.
They generally handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning.

6 Skill Level: Competent

The test taker has an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings.
They can use and understand reasonably complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

5 Skill Level: Modest

The test taker has a partial command of the language and copes with overall meaning in most situations, although they are likely to make many mistakes.
They should be able to handle basic communication in their own field.

4 Skill Level: Limited

The test taker's basic competence is limited to familiar situations.
They frequently show problems in understanding and expression.

3 Skill Level: Extremely limited

The test taker conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations.
There are frequent breakdowns in communication.

2 Skill Level: Intermittent

The test taker has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.

1 Skill Level: Non-user

The test taker has no ability to use the language except a few isolated words.

0 Skill Level: Did not attempt the test

The test taker did not answer the questions.

Calculating your overall score

For each section of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – you will be awarded a score on the IELTS scale. Your overall score is the average of your section scores, rounded to the closest half-point on the scale.

How long is my IELTS score valid?

We recommend that IELTS test results are considered valid for two years after a test has been taken. This is based on research into second-language loss. Organisations that accept IELTS can choose to accept results for a longer period, so you should check with them directly.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
