In a library, the word biography refers both to a kind of book and to a section where books of that kind are found. Each biography tells the story of a real person's life. A biography may be about someone who lived long ago, recently, or even someone who is still living, though in the last case it must necessarily be incomplete. The sudden rise of AuDHD: what is behind the rocketing rates of this life-changing diagnosis?

Just over a decade ago, autism and ADHD were thought to be mutually exclusive. But in recent years, all that has changed

H e had beaten more than 19,000 applicants for a place at medical school, yet Khurram Sadiq was now bunking off his hospital shifts. The 19-year-old felt inexplicably anxious around strangers on the wards and was hiding from his own patients. During lectures he couldn’t focus on what he was being taught. He deemed himself “a goof, a dunce” in contrast to his peers. Sadiq couldn’t motivate himself to revise for his exams and instead found himself panic reading textbooks in the final days. He passed his undergraduate pre-medical exams by the skin of his teeth. That was 30 years ago. In the decades since, Dr Sadiq has qualified as a consultant psychiatrist, been diagnosed with both autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specialised in autism and ADHD psychiatry and met hundreds of patients with struggles similar to his. He is now trying to spread what was once an unbelievable message: that both autism and ADHD can coexist in the same person simultaneously. Just over a decade ago, the two conditions were considered to be mutually exclusive, with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, often referred to as “psychiatry’s bible”, stating that the diagnosis of one precluded the existence of the other. This wasn’t revised until 2013. “It led to a fork in the road,” says Dr Jessica Eccles, spokesperson for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. “Not only for clinical practice, but also for research and public understanding of these conditions.” Now some specialists believe that the coexistence of both conditions is not just possible, but frequent. One study by researchers at Duke University found that up to half of people diagnosed as autistic also exhibit ADHD symptoms, and that characteristics of autism are present in two-thirds of people with ADHD. “My clinical experience suggests it’s more than three-quarters in both directions,” adds Dr Eccles. Online, the idea that autism and ADHD can coexist is so widely accepted that it has spawned its own label – “AuDHD” – and a groundswell of people who say they recognise its oxymoronic nature, perpetual internal war and rollercoaster of needs. There are tens of thousands of people in AuDHD self-help forums, and millions more watching AuDHD videos. Some of those videos come from Samantha Stein, a British YouTuber. “The fact that you can have both [autism and ADHD] at the same time is kind of paradoxical in nature,” she admits. “You think: ‘How can you be extremely rigid and need routines and structure, but also be completely incapable of maintaining a routine and structure?’” The 38-year-old started making videos on autism after her diagnosis in 2019, then began covering AuDHD after learning that she also had ADHD. “I realised that autistic adults – especially those who are diagnosed late in life – more often than not seem to have ADHD as well,” says Stein. Her first video on the subject, “ 5 signs you have ADHD and autism ”, has now been viewed more than 2m times.

Some critics like to describe ADHD – and more recently autism – as a “fashionable” diagnosis, a misinformed excuse for life’s struggles. It’s almost inevitable that the new AuDHD label will cause a similar backlash. To see just how misguided this is, we must first understand both autism and ADHD. Both are lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions that affect how people think, perceive the world and interact with others, according to Embracing Complexity , an umbrella group of organisations that research neurodiversity.

Autism and ADHD affect people on a spectrum of severity, both are legally recognised as disabilities, and neither are mental illnesses to be “cured”, although the knock-on effects can lead to mental illness . People who experience ways of thinking that diverge from those experienced by the majority of people are described as “ neurodivergent ”. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is caused by multiple genetic factors that aren’t yet fully understood . Contrary to misconception, autism doesn’t equate to impaired intelligence, and only around half of people with autism also have a co-occurring intellectual disability. According to the National Autistic Society, autism is characterised by social challenges, repetitive behaviours, over- or under-sensitivity to surroundings and highly focused interests. Autism is experienced in a multitude of ways. To empathise with the autistic trait of oversensitivity, for example, imagine that all your senses are amplified . The hum of your fridge is louder, the overhead lights are brighter, your itchy jumper is pricklier. It’s distracting while you’re trying to work, it’s draining to pretend it isn’t bothering you and you become increasingly stressed as a result. “For me, eating in a canteen is like eating in a nightclub for a neurotypical person,” says Jill Corbyn, who is autistic and the director of support organisation Neurodiverse Connection . “It’s unpleasantly loud, it’s going to distract you from your food, it’s anxiety-inducing.” Additionally, some autistic people may find social situations exhausting or overwhelming, or feel incompetent when they’re unable to decipher the subtleties of interpersonal communication, 60% of which is non-verbal . Charli Clement, 23, explains that while a non-autistic person may rehearse parts of a conversation before a date or a job interview, her autism leads her to “script significantly” before even ordering a drink at a bar.

“I try to make sure I’m not doing something that will be perceived as ‘wrong’, so focusing on what the person is saying and what I should be replying is overwhelming,” she says.

Compounding the experience is the feeling many autistic people have that it isn’t “normal” to feel this way and that they must camouflage their discomfort to fit in with the pack. This “masking”, as it’s known, is exhausting, invalidating and can lead to burnout . ADHD is also not fully understood. There’s evidence that the condition, involving an imbalance of neurotransmitters – including dopamine, in the brain – has both genetic and environmental causes. These chemical messengers are responsible for motivation, movement, planning, reward, memory, focus, alertness, impulse control and threat response, among others. People with untreated ADHD, whose reward pathways are therefore more dysregulated, can subsequently experience disordered moods, sleep, eating habits and dysfunction in almost every area of life. Some people with ADHD are like pinballs of external chaos – of lost keys, missed appointments and cluttered homes. Others may appear inattentive, distracted by balls of chaotic thoughts into which they frequently retreat from the world to untangle. ADHD affects people to different degrees. But many say their lives are marred by their brain’s misguided attempts to correct its chemical imbalances . They impulsively dopamine-spike with food, sex, drugs, booze, the internet, people, hobbies and novelty of all shades. “I am a slave to my own brain and it’s tiring,” writes one anonymous person on an ADHD Reddit support group. Another asks: “Do you also feel like a slave to your desires?” She gives the examples of “chasing girls, gambling, chasing men, eating, hobby-hopping, extreme budgeting, falling in love [with] the wrong person, spending extravagantly”.

What frequently underpins the external and internal chaos, according to experts and many ADHDers alike, is a pervasive sense of deep shame and the quiet realisation that their potential in life is not being met .

When autism meets ADHD, it’s a curious form of alchemy, according to those who have both. Sometimes the conditions are in conflict; at other times they’re symbiotic. There is no such thing as a perfect 50/50 split, explains Sadiq, and the brain is often “seesawing” between both conditions. This makes the presentation of AuDHD a distinctive condition in its own right, “completely different from pure ADHD or pure ASD”, he adds.

In his Ted Talk, “When Order and Anarchy Live Together”, Sadiq describes the dualities of the condition: “Silence v noise; structure v chaos; repetition v novelty; caution v risk-taking …” Mattia Maurée, a non-binary composer and host of the AuDHD Flourishing podcast, discovered the AuDHD concept after following separate pieces of advice about autism and ADHD that “just weren’t working for me”. “It was like: ‘No, my life is still really, really hard,’” they tell me from Philadelphia. AuDHD is uniquely “cyclical”, says Maurée, with big bursts of energy followed by a crash. “AuDHDers can also be incredibly creative and innovative, maybe because of that brain hyper-connectivity.” Creativity is cited as the most positive AuDHD attribute by everyone I speak to, along with the subtle pairings of traits that “complement each other in a really nice way”, as Stein puts it. “ADHD gives me a love of novelty and a very creative side. And then autism allows me to focus on a topic that I’m really interested in. All of that allows me to be very self-directed.”

The paradoxes of AuDHD can camouflage each other or – on the surface at least – cancel each other out, which is why some AuDHDers experience missed or incorrect diagnoses. In February, Sadiq saw a patient who had been referred to his NHS clinic for an ADHD diagnosis. He realised 15 minutes into the consultation that the patient was autistic. “If I had no lived experience of autism and ADHD I would have missed it completely,” he says. “I would have diagnosed either social anxiety or a personality disorder.” In spite of his expertise, Sadiq is not formally qualified to make an autism diagnosis, and instead he had to refer the patient on to the autism service within the NHS trust. He believes that psychiatrists specialising in autism should also be trained in ADHD and vice versa, because otherwise “they’re going to be missing a lot”.

It’s not just the medical profession that needs more coordination. Charities such as ADHD UK and the National Autistic Society also work independently from one another. Legislation such as the government-backed The Buckland Review of Autism Employment, which recently called for employers to boost support for autistic people , scrutinises autism provisions but not ADHD ones. ADHD UK is one of many advocacy groups calling for the Autism Act , which legally compels the government to support autistic people, to be widened in scope to include other forms of neurodiversity. Once a correct dual diagnosis is obtained, there are still complications. ADHD can be successfully managed with medication and behavioural coaching, but some autistic people react badly to this medication. Research indicates that stimulants are overall less tolerable for AuDHDers than they are for people with ADHD, according to the global research platform Embrace Autism, with one report finding that side-effects doubled in those with both conditions.

Another quirk of AuDHD treatment is that in some cases, it’s only after “quietening” someone’s ADHD symptoms that their autism traits come to the fore. This is often when people realise their autistic side for the first time, and it could explain why rates of self-reported autism closely follow those of ADHD. The medical professionals I interviewed for this article were emphatic that ADHD medication cannot cause autism. Instead, Dr Eccles says: “It has just changed the balance of symptoms. The balance of masking has changed.” The prevalence of autism was widely believed to be 1% until last year, when a first of its kind study published in the Lancet found the true rate to be more than double that, with at least 1.2 million autistic people in the UK. The prevalence of ADHD in UK adults is around 4% , according to ADHD UK, and assessment waiting lists for both conditions are increasing year on year, with waits of a decade in some parts of the country for ADHD assessment. When naysayers argue that we are in the midst of an overdiagnosis epidemic, charities often point them to the statistics on suicide, and the fact that the ripple effects of ADHD and autism often lead to mental ill-health. Autistic adults without a learning disability are far more likely to die by suicide. In 2022, researchers from Cambridge and Nottingham University, analysing coroners’ inquest records, concluded that a significant number of people who had died by suicide were likely autistic but undiagnosed. Adults with ADHD, meanwhile, are  five times more likely to attempt suicide than their neurotypical peers. Yet AuDHDers have been found to be at even greater risk of suicide than either those with only autism or ADHD, according to an academic study of more than 50,000 people.

For people like Clement, criticism about over-labelling is the least of her concerns. As a teenager she spent time in a psychiatric unit before the nature of her AuDHD was fully realised. “I’d already given myself labels,” she says. “I already thought that I was weird and broken. So having a label that actually made sense and encompassed my experience was so liberating.”

She now works part-time advising psychiatric hospitals on how to ensure their sensory environments are adequate for neurodiverse people.

Other AuDHDers give colourful analogies to describe the epiphany of diagnosis. Before the discovery, I’m told, it’s as if you are trying to fit in and be a horse rather than celebrating the fact that you’re a zebra. It’s like being trapped in a maze in the dark, then suddenly the lights are on and now there’s a way to navigate out.

Stein describes her life as “fundamentally walking parallel to, but never quite included in society”. Her diagnosis, however, “allowed me to look at my life through the lens of far more compassion – as a pretty good autistic person rather than a broken neurotypical person”.

“I think in some ways [AuDHD] can be a very beautiful thing,” she says.

“You just need the right support to be able to access those parts of you. And you need the label to know what the hell is going on in your brain.”

The closer a viewer is to the center line of the path, the longer the eclipse lasts. For April 8, that 115-mile-wide path touches 500 U.S. cities and portions of 13 states during daylight hours, covering major metropolitan areas such as San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse along the way.

“It will likely be the most-viewed astronomical event in American history,” Michael Zeiler, eclipse cartographer and co-founder of Great American Eclipse , said in a statement . “When you combine the populations of Mexico, U.S.A., and Canada that live inside the path of totality, and add all of those who will travel on eclipse day, a total of 50 million North Americans witnessing totality is possible.”

That allure will bring people from across the country—and potentially the world—to join the 32 million people already estimated to live within the path and witness the event.

The Eclipse Starts in Mexico

The total solar eclipse doesn’t begin (or end) in the United States—it just dominates the American afternoon. The total eclipse will first hit mainland North America near Mazatlán, Mexico, giving us our first glimpse of a total solar eclipse in a major city along the path. Near the height of the duration, the eclipse is expected to last 4 minutes, 20 seconds near Mazatlán.

The Eclipse is Bigger in Texas

The hot spot for the total solar eclipse is Texas. With expectations—and history—of clear skies during April and plenty of viewing locations, the areas outside of San Antonio and Austin are the prime locations to witness the eclipse . Add in that the eclipse will last a whopping 4 minutes, 25 seconds in both Kerrville and Fredericksburg, and it’s no wonder that these locations are expected to draw the most intense eclipse fans from across the country. Totality will occur in the area at 1:32 p.m. Central time.

Of course, having portions of four major Texas cities locked in the path of totality means that millions of people already living there needn’t do much to witness the event. Zeiler expects Texas to receive over one million visitors— Space.com predicts 1.5 million visitors—and Kerrville alone could welcome nearly half a million people coming to witness the height of the moment.

“People will realize that they can go from zero totality to four minutes totality just by driving an hour on Interstate 10,” Kim Arvidsson, associate professor pf physics at Schreiner University told Space.com . “There’s going to be a vast increase in traffic that day.”

The Heart of the South and Midwest

Upon leaving Texas, the eclipse runs through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. And it will hit some key cities along the way, including Indianapolis , Cleveland, and Akron. And by slipping near to St. Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Pittsburgh, expect plenty of folks from those cities finding a spot in the path to view the afternoon event.

Indianapolis will have the eclipse for a strong 3 minutes and 51 seconds, and Cleveland just one second less. Zeiler believes the Midwest will attract the next greatest group of travelers, with Ohio and Indiana both welcoming about half a million people .

Eclipse Leaves U.S. After Northeast Stop

New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine round out the list of U.S. states along the path, adding Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse to the list of major cities under darkness. Of course, having New York City, Boston, Washington, D.C. , and Philadelphia all within 200 miles of the path, expect the Northeast to host a whirlwind of interest. The eclipse departs Maine—and the United States—around 3:32 p.m. Eastern time.

Montreal Gets in on the Eclipse

It may be nearing the end of the path, but Montreal is in the path of totality—and Toronto and Ottawa aren’t that far off. Expect Canadians to flock toward Montreal for best viewing in Canada, although those in the maritime provinces will also be treated to the path before it hits the Atlantic Ocean .

Mattel launches new 'collaborative,' less intimidating version of Scrabble: What we know

One of the world's most popular word games is getting a new version.

Mattel unveiled Scrabble Together on Tuesday, adding a second side to the classic Scrabble gameboard to make "gameplay more accessible for anyone who finds word games intimidating," the company said in a news release.

The company said the double-sided board allows fans to "pick and choose their gameplay mode, so everyone can have fun with Scrabble." It is the first time in its 75-year history that Scrabble has made such a significant change to its gameboard, according to Mattel.

What changes in Scrabble Together?

Scrabble Together allows players to work as a team to complete goal cards at their chosen challenge level, with helper cards to aid players throughout the game, according to Mattel. The game is also designed to be quicker with simple scoring, the company said.

The game is currently only available in Europe, as Mattel owns the Scrabble license globally but not in North America, a Mattel spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Why a new Scrabble version?

Mattel says new research has "delved into UK adult's love for board games" and found that 51% of board game players use it as a way of unplugging from social media, while 65% believe playing board games helps them switch off.

“Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players," said Ray Adler, global head of games at Mattel, in the news release.

"For anyone who’s ever thought, 'word games aren’t for me', or felt a little intimidated by the Classic game, Scrabble Together Mode is an ideal option," Adler said in the statement. "With team based and faster gameplay, Scrabble Together Mode continues to celebrate the wonder of words just as the Classic version does, but thanks to its exciting new co-operative and dynamic gameplay, it’s more accessible and brings people together."

On the surface, Morgan Wallen is a country star at the top of his game.

The singer's third studio album, 2023's "One Thing at a Time," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and remained there for 19 weeks, breaking the record for most weeks among country albums . He finished the year as Billboard's top-performing Hot 100 artist .

May 23, 2020: Wallen is kicked out of Kid Rock's bar and arrested.

According to The Tennessean, Wallen was arrested and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges during a night out in downtown Nashville.

Police said Wallen was kicked out of Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N' Roll Steakhouse at about 11 p.m. for "kicking glass items." He then got into verbal fights with passersby on the street.

"We didn't mean any harm, and we want to say sorry to any bar staff or anyone that was affected," Wallen said in a since-deleted tweet the day after the incident. "Thank you to the local authorities for being so professional and doing their job with class. Love y'all."

Prosecutors later abandoned the charges. 

October 2020: Wallen is caught partying without a mask during lockdown.

Just one week before Wallen was set to make his debut appearance on "Saturday Night Live" in October 2020, videos of the singer drinking and making out with women at packed bars and parties in Alabama, without a mask, emerged online .

At the time, Alabama had deployed a statewide mask and social distancing mandate to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

October 7, 2020: Wallen's "SNL" appearance is canceled.

As a result of his breaking COVID-19 restrictions, Wallen's "SNL" appearance was canceled. He was quickly replaced by Jack White. 

"My actions this past weekend were pretty short-sighted and they have obviously affected my long-term goals and my dreams," he said in an Instagram video after getting axed by NBC producers. 

October 7, 2020: Wallen drops out of headlining a festival in Georgia.

The same day Wallen's "SNL" gig was canceled, he also canceled his headline slot at the Rome River Jam in Georgia — just two days before he was scheduled to take the stage.

According to Billboard, the festival — which allowed fans to gather in their own socially distanced, open-air pods — was expected to be the largest event planned for country fans since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Wallen was replaced by Lee Brice on the lineup.

December 5, 2020: Wallen jokes about breaking COVID-19 precautions during an "SNL" sketch.

Wallen made his "SNL" debut two months after his original appearance was canceled.

During the show, Wallen made a surprise appearance during a skit to poke fun at his recent behavior.

In the sketch, Wallen is drinking at an Alabama bar when he meets two future versions of himself, played by Jason Bateman and Bowen Yang, who warn him of what's about to unfold. 

"Someone's going to post a video of you breaking COVID-19 protocols and the whole internet is going to freak out," Bateman says to Wallen.

February 2, 2021: Wallen is caught on video using the N-word.

In a video filmed by Wallen's neighbor and published by TMZ, Wallen can be heard using the N-word to address his friend after a night out in Nashville.

"I'm embarrassed and sorry," Wallen said to TMZ. "I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better."

February 3, 2020: Wallen's music is pulled from radio stations across the United States.

Stations including SiriusXM and iHeartRadio pulled Wallen's music from the air following the release of TMZ's video. Wallen's music was also deplatformed by streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify.

CMT also took a stand against Wallen's behavior.

"After learning of Morgan Wallen's racial slur late last night, we are in the process of removing his appearances from all our platforms," the country-music cable network  announced on Twitter . "We do not tolerate or condone words and actions that are in direct opposition to our core values that celebrate diversity, equity & inclusion."

February 3, 2020: Wallen is suspended by his record label.

Big Loud Records announced it would suspend Wallen's recording contract "indefinitely" following his casual use of the N-word.

Republic Records, which partnered with Big Loud to distribute Wallen's music, backed the decision with a statement on Twitter.

"Such behavior will not be tolerated," the statement reads.

February 10, 2020: Wallen issues an apology video.

In a lengthy video shared on his Instagram,  Wallen apologized for his remarks and said that he had spoken to leaders in the Black community.

Wallen also shared that he was attempting to get sober.

"I have one favor to ask. I appreciate those who still see something in me and have defended me," he said. "But for today, please don't. I was wrong. It's on me to take ownership for this. And I fully accept any penalties I'm facing."

"Our actions matter, our words matter," he added. "And I just want to encourage anyone watching to please learn from my mistakes."

October 28, 2021: Wallen is barred from attending the American Music Awards.

Wallen was a double nominee at the 2021 American Music Awards, receiving nods in the favorite male country artist and favorite country album categories.

However, he was barred from attending and accepting awards due to his use of the racial slur.

"Morgan Wallen is a nominee this year based on charting," said the show's producers in a statement. "As his conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting).

"We plan to evaluate his progress in doing meaningful work as an ally to the Black community and will consider his participation in future shows."

May 15, 2022: Wallen performs at the Billboard Music Awards.

Wallen was a four-time nominee at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards , which distributes awards based on streaming and sales figures.

He took the stage to perform a medley of "Don't Think Jesus" and "Wasted on You," his first award-show performance since he was filmed using the N-word. He also won the award for top country male artist.

During the awards ceremony, host Diddy said he was "uncanceling" Wallen.

"Love does not rock like that," said the hip-hop superstar. "I'm here to forgive, to unify, to celebrate, and to have everybody be free."

Diddy has since become a controversial figure in his own right, facing multiple allegations of sexual assault and abuse .

June 29, 2022: Wallen opens up about the "dark" time in his life.

Wallen reflected on his past year during an interview with Storme Warren on SiriusXM's "The Highway."

"I feel like I'm a pretty resilient person, and I'm a pretty happy person in general," Wallen told Warren. "But that was definitely a really difficult time, you know?"

"We tried to keep my sight set on better things," he continued. "I feel like if we just stay true to who I knew I really was, that it would, we would come out all right."

March 13, 2023: Wallen scores his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Last Night."

Wallen's third studio album, "One Thing at a Time," debuted at No. 1 upon its release in 2023.

All 36 of the album's tracks appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, breaking Drake's single-week record . "Last Night" claimed the top spot, becoming Wallen's first No. 1 hit.

The single went on to chart at No. 1 for 16 nonconsecutive weeks, the most ever for a solo song .

April 23, 2023: Wallen cancels his concert in Mississippi minutes before he was meant to take the stage.

Just moments before Wallen was set to appear at the Vaught Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, fans were shocked by a black-and-white message on the stage's big screen, announcing his last-minute cancellation .

"Ladies and gentlemen, unfortunately, Morgan has lost his voice and is unable to perform tonight," the message read. "Therefore, tonight's show has been canceled. Please make your way safely to the stadium exits. Refunds for tonight's event will be available at point of purchase."

Wallen later apologized in a statement on Instagram.

"After last night's show I started losing my voice so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor and working through my vocal exercise trying to get better," he wrote. "I am so sorry, I promise you guys I tried everything I could."

April 25, 2023: Wallen faces legal action for his concert's last-minute cancellation.

Brandi Burcham, a fan who attended the canceled Mississippi gig, filed a federal lawsuit against Wallen for breach of contract and negligence.

The University of Mississippi, which hosted the concert, promised full ticket refunds, but Burcham's complaint said she has yet to be reimbursed.

Burcham also cited incurring "out-of-pocket expenses" caused by the concert cancellation that won't be covered by the reimbursement .

April 8, 2024: Wallen is arrested in Nashville and charged with three felony counts.

According to local news reports , Wallen was arrested after he threw a chair from a sixth-story rooftop bar in Nashville. Two police officers who were standing outside said the chair hit the ground just a few feet away.

In a statement provided to The New York Times , Wallen's lawyer Worrick Robinson confirmed his client's arrest and said he is "cooperating fully with authorities."

Wallen was arrested on three felony counts of reckless endangerment, the Times reported. He was also charged with one count of disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor.

He was released after posting bond and received a court date for early May.

“Yapping” Is TikTok's New Favorite Word — Here's What It Means

After a year of girl-ifying every trend, users online are continuing to rebrand with cutesy terms.

The ever-changing tides of the internet and its accompanying slang can be jarring, but sometimes it reveals something with true staying power. The word “zaddy,” for example, is no longer just a word used in conversation with your chronically online friends — I’m pretty sure my mom used it recently to describe her everlasting crush on Richard Gere. Then “ cheugy ,” which has cemented its spot in the lexicon in 2021 and plagues millennials with the fear of being labeled as such to this day.

Sometimes the words are made up (see above) and sometimes they are simply repackaged from their original form to appeal to the meme-scrolling, internet brain rot masses. Take “rizz,” short for charisma, which started off as a TikTok inside joke then was awarded Oxford’s word of the year for 2023 .

A similar linguistic revamp is currently happening with the term “yap” and all of its derivatives. Even Beyoncé uses the word on her new album Cowboy Carter : “When they know it’s slappin’, then here come the yappin’.”

According to TikTok and X, you’re no longer an annoying person who talks too much, you’re simply a yapper. According to Merriam-Webster, to yap is “to talk in a shrill insistent way” — the human conversational equivalent of a hairless Chihuahua’s bark. But right now, the ability to yap is actually a compliment. The cutesy noun iteration (“yapper”) is a label to reclaim proudly and find your online community of other people who struggle to know when to shut the heck up.

To “yap” is to have the ability to talk about anything. It’s lower stakes than gossip but more intriguing than small talk. “Every yapper gf needs a listener bf,” wrote X user @hotmessjunk on a viral photo of Taylor Swift talking with her mouth wide open to boyfriend Travis Kelce. TikTok user @_lils_ posted a clip with the caption “When I meet a fellow yapper and we can yap for hours on end without running out of things to yap about,” as she mimicked note-taking in the video. The post has over half a million likes and thousands of comments from fellow yappers and the people who love them.

“My yapper and I have never finished a conversation. It’s just one long inner monologue shared,” one person wrote. “Not a yapper myself but I love being with one,” wrote another.

Perhaps these yapper and non-yapper relationships are the 2024 version of “black cat and golden retriever energy,” another altered version of the Bouba-Kiki phenomenon that simply reiterates the age-old “opposites attract” mentality in a way that appeals to people who spend too much time on their favorite platforms.

Online, users are always looking out for the next “-core” to take over their feeds and the next “-ification” to define a moment in time. The year 2023 was all about girlhood , the coquettecore of everything, the cute-ification of existence. People were putting bows on their food to round out this past December, remember? The most enmeshed users of the internet love making things adorable — they call grown men baby girls and can’t get enough of the nickname Pookie , for God’s sake — so why wouldn’t a dainty little term for someone with chronic word vomit be the next trend? If “yapper” continues on its internet feed domination, it’s only a matter of time until it becomes a full-on etymological phenomenon IRL. Hey, if I can yap about the word itself this much, there must be something to it.
