Fraction Learning
Fractions is an area that a lot of kids find hard to understand. One of the problems with fractions is that they have different meanings depending on the context.
For example, you can eat half an apple or cut an orange into fourths. But you can also put the number one-half on a number line, measure a line 3 1/2 cm long, or find a fourth of 24.
Once the concept of fractions as numbers and fractions as parts of a whole has been understood, your child will be well on their way to developing a sound understanding of fractions.

Best Fractions Worksheets and Resources for KS2 Maths
Whether it's fractions of amounts, adding and subtracting fractions or finding equivalent fractions, these worksheets, activities and lessons will help your primary maths students get to grips with this area of the curriculum…
Fractions worksheets
If your Year 3 or Year 4 class are struggling with finding fractions where the numerator is higher than 1 (eg 2/3 of 15), try these step-by-step differentiated fractions worksheets by teacher Sophie Bartlett.
Teach fractions like a pirate
Author: Ian Goldsworthy
Ahoy there, matey! Raise the Jolly Roger and I will show you how a bit of buccaneer vernacular can give your pupils’ learning the old heave ho.
Why would a teacher want to talk like a pirate? Shiver me timbers – why would any sane educator not want to do that? But will it help my class learn? (You could even tie it in for International Talk Like a Pirate Day in September).
Students will learn how to measure volume in millilitres, how fractions of different denominators can add up to a whole, combining liquids in the correct ratio and that scurvy can result from a lack of fresh fruit.
Download this complete lesson plan here.
Fractions of shapes and amount
Author: Plazoom
Designed for Year 2, these fractions of shapes and amounts worksheets offer a variety of problems helping children to recognise, find, name and write fractions ⅓, ¼, 2/4 and ¾ of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity.
Answer sheets are included too.
Get this resource here.
Finding fractions of amounts
You can then take things further with this Year 3 resource designed to let children recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects.
Get this one here.
Fractions of an amount treasure hunt
Author: David Morse
This activity requires students to calculate a fraction of an amount, where the numerator is always ‘1’, to find and decipher an encrypted clue to reveal where the treasure is hidden!
These question cards have been prepared in two sizes. The large cards can be pinned around around the classroom and used for a whole-class activity; the smaller (loop cards) can be used for group work or by individuals.
Download and print here.
Fractions of amounts QR code scavenger hunt
Author: Little Sherbet Lemon
Make learning about fractions fun and engaging by using QR codes. This PDF features a 24-question scavenger hunt linked to fractions of amounts using QR codes. It’s great for revision of fractions of amounts in Year 4 and 5.
The ‘code’ has the fractions of amounts question so the student can scan the code, record the question (eg 6/7 of 42g) and answer to the question, and look for that answer.
Once they have the card with that answer they then scan that ‘code’ and continue with the same steps until they find all of the answers.
Give it a go here.
Equivalent fractions – half, tenths and hundredths worksheet
Author: Roberta Cresswell
This worksheet shows a grid divided into 4, 10, 20 and 100, to find the equivalent of half with quarters, tenths, twentieths and hundredths.
It’s ideal for Year 4 as a precursor to looking at decimals, tenth and hundredths, as well as to correct some misconceptions with lower-ability Year 6 children.
Equivalent fractions – practical exploration
Author: Nyima Drayang
These are a set of rectangular ‘overlays’ – to be printed onto acetate (pupils get a pack containing one of each overlay).
They can use the overlays to divide the shapes (Questions) into different fractions and explore how equivalent fractions work.
It is a really practical kinaesthetic activity which encourages pupils to discover the mathematics themselves rather than learning ‘rules’ to make equivalent fractions.
Click here to download this resource.
Equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages
Give your Year 6s an extra challenge with these fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents worksheets.
There are three sections, all with answers, that test pupils’ ability to recall and use equivalences between simple fractions, decimals and percentages, including in different contexts.
Ordering fractions and decimals
These topic-focused SATs questions at the end of a unit will help to test and extend students’ understanding as well as helping them to prepare for SATs next year. These questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard making feedback with students more efficient.
This particular compilation is from the fractions, decimals and percentage strand and contains questions which require students to think about the relative sizes of fractions and decimals, and the order that they would be written on a number line.
This compilation is designed to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’!
Get them here.
Ordering fractions and decimals worksheet
These are also topic-focused SATs questions to help students prepare for exams.
Find them here.
Fractions to decimals treasure hunt for KS2 and KS3
This is a quick activity, ideal as a starter, that helps verify students knowledge of common fraction-decimal equivalences, and come in two sizes suitable for a whole-class activity, or group individual work.
SATs preparation
Equivalent fractions sats-style questions.
These topic-focused SATs questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard, making feedback with students more efficient.
Fractions arithmetic SATs-style questions
More topic-focused SATs questions with fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard.
Download here.
Understanding fractions SATs-style questions
This particular compilation is from the Fractions, Decimals and Percentage strand and contains questions which require students to shade a given fraction of a shape or identify how much of a shape has been shaded.
It is designed to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework, and questions increase in difficulty as students work through them.
These reusable cards are excellent for one-to-one tutorials and interventions. They are also great when working with small groups or as a starter/plenary for a whole class.
Fractions of an amount loop cards
This set allows students to practise working out fractions of quantities when the numerator of the fraction is ‘1’.
Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this topic and so that the opportunities for students to guess answers are minimised.
In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order.
Cut out card size is approx 65 x 90 mm.
Adding unit fractions 1 loop cards
This set allows students to practise adding unit fractions in which one of the denominators is a multiple of the other.
My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download.
Adding unit fractions 2 loop cards
This set allows students to practise adding unit fractions in which one of the denominators might not be a multiple of the other.
Fractions to decimals loop cards for KS2 and KS3 Maths
This set allows students to practise converting fractions into decimals. The fractions within these sets of cards are ‘common’ fractions and so it is acceptable (in fact, desirable) that they learn the conversions rather than actually work them out each time!
Print them out here.
Decimals to fractions loop cards for KS2 and KS3
This set goes the other way, allowing students to practise converting decimals into fractions.

31 Activities and Resources for Teaching Fractions in the Classroom
Written by Holly (Teach Starter)
Teaching fractions? We have everything you need right here to make learning fractions in the classroom exciting!
Starting off with this super cute comic by Jeff Keane . What a great way to start a fraction lesson, have a discussion with your students about what is happening in this comic.
The Fraction Boogie
This is a great way to get your students up and moving.
Each student will need one piece of newspaper. Students place the piece of newspaper out as a ‘whole piece’. The teacher plays some fun dancing music so that the students can dance along on their piece of newspaper. When the music stops, the students must pick up their piece of paper and fold it in half. They then start dancing on half of the newspaper. Again, the music stops and they fold the piece of paper so that they are dancing on only one quarter. Finally, they fold the newspaper so that they are only dancing on one eighth of the paper.
An activity kids will love doing! They can then unfold their piece of paper to see the folds in the paper. A great discussion can take place after this game about the different fractions they created during this activity.
Make Fraction Teams
Download our Equivalent Fractions Cards .
Provide each student with a fraction card. Explain to the students that they must find their ‘fraction team’, that is, they must gather in a group with all the other students that have a fraction equivalent to the one on their card. Once they have found all the members of their fraction team, they must sit down.
The first fraction team to find all of their correct members is the winner!
Create a Picture or Pattern using Fractions
Use our Fraction Wheels or create your own using coloured paper.
Encourage students to create a pattern with quarters and eighths of a circle. Alternatively, have them create a picture of an object using what ever part of the fraction wheels they want, then work out the total of all the parts.
Fraction Flowers
Inspired by Teach Beside Me these fraction flowers are a fun hands on activity that will help reinforce the concept of fractions.
Use our Fraction wheels to stick on paper plates to create each of the flowers. I printed the fraction wheels two to page and the size was perfect for the paper plates. Mix all the fractions up and have students put the fraction flowers back together.
Fraction Cookie Jar Sorting
This equivalent fractions sorting activity is a great small group or whole-class activity to consolidate students’ understanding of equivalent fractions.
Print and laminate the six cookie jars and the cookies. Provide each student with a cookie. As a class, sort the cookies into the correct cookie jars, according to equivalence.
I Have, Who Has? Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Game
Play this I Have, Who Has? Fractions Game as a whole-class to consolidate students’ understanding of fraction, decimal and percentage equivalence.
Fraction Frenzy Board Game
Play this Fraction Frenzy Board Game with your students to consolidate their understanding of adding and subtracting fractions.
Fractions BINGO!
Play this Pizza Fraction Bingo to help consolidate your students’ understanding of halves, thirds, quarters and fifths. 32 cards are available so this can be played as a whole class or in a small group.
Create a Fractions Flip Book
Create this Fractions Flip Book with your students. You can create a larger version if you download and print this template in A3. The book includes wholes, halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and eighths.
Fraction Card Game
A great game where students create and compare fractions. Best played in pairs. For more information on how to play this card game and other great card games in the classroom, check out our blog – Nine Nifty Ways to use a Pack of Cards in the Classroom .
Mystic Rose Art Work
Have your students create a mystic rose. A fun way to explore fractions around a circle by using a compass to measure the fraction out.

Tips on Teaching Fractions in Key Stage 2
Share this post.
Teaching Fractions so early in the UK national curriculum relative to our European neighbours brings some interesting challenges.
Below are some ideas, hints and tips about how to introduce fractions to your pupils.
Fractions Walls
A fractions wall helps children to visualise how fractions relate to each other in size. It’s a great tool to start talking about fractions. Ask questions – how many quarters in a half? How many eights in a half?
Number Lines
Number lines can also be another useful tool when talking about and discussing fractions.
Ask students to label fractions – a quarter, a half, three quarters -.
Perhaps even advance to a 0-2 number line as sometimes seeing fractions in the larger context of integers can really help.
Combine them!
Combining a fractions wall and number line like the image here, can help things click!
As you know integers, decimals, fractions even ratios are all different sides of the same coin. Understanding this, is key to maths mastery and fluency.
Sometimes showing the same information but in a broader context can really help some children.
Use in Language
Fractions are not things. They are not tangible objects. They are an adjective of quantity.
As such, children can’t touch them and so can find them really hard to grasp (pun intended!)
Giving real life context for fractions is so important early on.
Get children to use fractions in a sentence and then question what they meant. – I ate half a cake.
What would changing the fraction mean? I ate a quarter of the cake.
What does that mean in relation to the first sentence?
If they can use fractions within English then they are starting to get a foundation.
Don’t recognise fractions!
I am a firm believer that one of the issues with fractions is that they are presented prototypically.
So when people talk about half a cake, they visualise a cut down the middle. Half a cake can also mean the half a cake after a dog has attacked a cake….simply a mess with bits missing from all over.
Both are equally valid representations of half a cake and help distinguish about fractions being an adjective and not a noun.

These topic-focused SATs questions at the end of a unit will help to test and extend students’ understanding as well as helping them to prepare for SATs next year. These questions have fully-worked solutions which can be displayed on a whiteboard making feedback with students more efficient. Click 👉 tes.com/…/KS2-Maths-Questions… for similar-style compilations on the other KS2 topics. <hr> This particular compilation is from the FRACTIONS, DECIMALS AND PERCENTAGE strand and contains questions which require students to add and subtract fractions, multiply fractions, and divide a fraction by a whole number. Most of the questions are from Arithmetic papers, but some Reasoning questions are also included. <hr> I have designed this compilation to be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet which is in the style of the actual SATs papers and is convenient for use in class or as homework. It can even be given to individual students if a parent is asking for ‘some more work’!
KEY POINTS:
- I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful.
- I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented.
- Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined).
- I have spent a lot of time arranging the questions so that there is a general increase in difficulty as students work through them, and so that they fit on the pages better – this means less wasted space and significant paper-saving when printing 😃 <hr> 👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. If the rate-resource button on this page doesn’t work, then go to your ratings page by clicking 👉 www.tes.com/…/rate-resources…
