Your suggestions will show once you've entered some text.

Great job! We didn't find any suggestions in your text.

Why Should You Use a Free Essay Checker?

The simple answer? Good grammar is necessary, but it’s not easy. You've already done countless hours of research to write the essay. You don’t want to spend countless hours correcting it, too.

You'll get a better grade

Good grammar or its absence can determine if you get a good grade or a failing one. Impress your lecturer not just with how grammatically sound your writing is, but how clear it is and how it flows.

You'll save time

Essay writing can be a long and tedious process. ProWritingAid's essay checker saves you the hassle by acting as the first line of defense against pesky grammar issues.

You'll become a better writer

Essay writing is a particular skill and one that becomes better with practice. Every time you run your essay through ProWritingAid’s essay corrector, you get to see what your common mistakes are and how to fix them.

Good Writing = Good Grades

It’s already hard to know what to write in an essay. Don’t let grammar mistakes hinder your writing and prevent you from getting a good grade. ProWritingAid’s essay checker will help you write your best essay yet. Since the checker is powered by AI, using it means that grammar errors don’t stand a chance. Give your professors something to look forward to reading with clear, concise, and professional writing.

How Does ProWritingAid’s Essay Checker Work?

Your goal in essay writing is to convey your message as best as possible. ProWritingAid's essay checker is the first step towards doing this.

Get Rid of Spelling Errors

ProWritingAid’s essay checker will show you what it thinks are spelling errors and present you with possible corrections. If a word is flagged and it’s actually spelt correctly you can always choose to ignore the suggestion.

Fix Grammar Errors

Professors aren’t fans of poor grammar because it interrupts your message and makes your essay hard to understand. ProWritingAid will run a grammar check on your paper to ensure that your message is precise and is being communicated the way you intended.

Get Rid of Punctuation Mistakes

A missing period or comma here and there may not seem that serious, but you’ll lose marks for punctuation errors. Run ProWritingAid’s paper checker to use the correct punctuation marks every time and elevate your writing.

Improve Readability

Make sure that in the grand scheme your language is not too complicated. The essay checker's built in readability report will show if your essay is easy or hard to read. It specifically zones in on paragraphs that might be difficult to read so you can review them.

What Else Can the Essay Checker Do?

The editing tool analyzes your text and highlights a variety of key writing issues, such as overused words, incohesive sentence structures, punctuation issues, repeated phrases, and inconsistencies.

You don’t need to drown your essay in words just to meet the word count. ProWritingAid’s essay checker will help to make your words more effective. You'll get to construct your arguments and make sure that every word you use builds towards a meaningful conclusion.

Use more transition words in your essay

Transition words help to organize your ideas by showing the relationship between them. The essay checker has a built in Transition report that highlights and shows the percentage of transitions used in your essay. Use the results to add transitions where necessary.

ProWritingAid product image - student sentence variety

An engaging essay has sentences of varying lengths. Don’t bore your professor with long, rambling sentences. The essay checker will show you where you need to break long sentences into shorter sentences, or add more sentence length variation.

ProWritingAid product image - student passive voice

Generally, in scholarly writing, with its emphasis on precision and clarity, the active voice is preferred. However, the passive voice is acceptable in some instances. When you run your essay through ProWritingAid’s essay checker, you get feedback on whether you 'r e using the passive or active voice to convey your idea.

ProWritingAid illustration - power verb

There are academic specific power verbs like appraise , investigate , debunk , support , etc., that can add more impact to your argument by giving a more positive and confident tone. The essay checker will check your writing for power verbs and notify you if you have less than three throughout your essay.

ProWritingAid product image - repeats

It's easy to get attached to certain phrases and use them as crutches in your essays but this gives the impression of boring and repetitive writing. The essay checker will highlight your repeats and suggest contextually relevant alternatives.

We’ve all been there, your deadline is looming when disaster strikes!

Your laptop gets stolen, your job distracts you, you fall behind… it happens.

If you need a high quality college, high school, or university essay quickly, why not try a top essay writing service?

Here we’ve evaluated some of the best essay writing services online based on 4 benchmarks: price, quality, writers, and customer support.

How the Essay Writing Services Were Evaluated

Price - Essay writing services tend to charge on a per-page basis that includes turnaround time, academic level, topic, and so on. In this review, sites that offered quality at great prices scored higher on this list.

Quality - It’s no secret that these essays will be handed in at schools, colleges, or even universities. Even if the student does rewrite the content in their own words, the quality of the original piece cannot be overlooked. That’s why this review took into consideration the quality of content provided when ranking the best essay writing services on the market.

Writers - Building on quality, the writers hired by the platform should be professional, experienced, and capable of handling any paper thrown at them. As such, this article carefully looked at how each platform screened writers and what methods were available for the customer to contact the writer.

Customer Support - Customers are bound to run into issues with any online service at some point. Therefore, this article made sure to look at how customer service on each site dealt with complaints, revisions, and any negative feedback.

The Best Essay Writing Sites in 2021

1. 99Papers - Best Essay Writing Service Overall

With an average trustpilot rating of 4.6 with 230 positive reviews, this is one of the most trustworthy and ethical writing services we have been able to find. The pricing starts at roughly $9 per page and goes up from there depending on length, etc.

99papers is also one of the few paper writing services that has a no-questions-asked money back guarantee. After using the site and talking to their support you can feel they are not looking to make a quick buck and are focused on building long term customer relationships to get repeat customers.

99Papers Positives

Competitive pricing

Handles all types of writing assignments

Flexible deadlines

Easy-to-use platform

Money-back guarantee

A 5% first-time discount adds to your savings and makes sure customers can afford their services without emptying their piggy bank. There is an on-site calculator to figure out your costs before you sign up and order a paper.

Plus, users can order essay writing, research papers, citations, and even dissertation projects, as well as other content projects they need to be completed by a pro. There is also a money-back guarantee. Customers just have to look on the website to find the requirements that have to be met to get their money back.

With the simple ordering process, users simply have to click on the particulars for their specific needs, and the order will reflect those requirements when the writer picks up the project. The company does pride itself on making sure your deadlines are met, guaranteeing you won't have to request an extension or turn your paper in late to your teacher.

2. Grademiners - Best for Fast Turnaround Times

Experience counts, and with this writing service, students are getting over ten years' worth of industry experience. Grademiners have been around for a while and, therefore, know how to provide quality papers.

Grademiners Positives

Grademiners vet their writers, making sure they pass a grammar test and a screening interview to guarantee your papers are handled by people who know their stuff.

Their pricing is competitive, and depending on the length, deadline, and other details, customers can pay as little as $16 a page. $8 per page if proofreading is all that's needed to make sure your paper is perfect.

This company also offers discounts, a money-back guarantee as well as 24/7 communication through different chat, e-mail, and other messaging options. Users can stay in constant contact with the company while waiting for a quick deadline to be met.

Finally, their online reputation is quite good, and the professional attitude helps make sure customers get treated as they should.

3. Essaybox - Best Writing Service for College Students & Graduates

The focus of this writing service is more for college students and graduate students. They work with clients worldwide and employ about 1800 writers, give or take a few, who live in different countries.

Essaybox Positives

Native English writers

Covers a wide range of subjects

Works with students up to Ph.D. level

Easy-to-use payment system

Writers occasionally miss deadlines

Expensive extras

Like every other writing service, their per-page costs are competitive, with the minimum price starting at $11.40. If you want plagiarism-free papers, customers may need to pay a little extra. Still, Essaybox's plagiarism detection will make sure students won't get in trouble.

This writing service also offers the same services as their competitors, including but not limited to a money-back guarantee, original work, 24 7 customer service, unlimited revisions, and so on.

There is also a first-time discount, but long-term clients can get other bonuses if the paper is long enough. Plus, they use native English speakers from Canada, America, the UK, and other western countries.

Their area of expertise covers a wide range of subjects making sure their company is ready to handle the needs of its many different clients. The maximum fee that customers can be charged should be around $60 per page, but that is for a Ph.D. level paper with a 3-hour deadline.

4. EssayFactory - Best Essay Writing Service for UK-Based Student

More for students who live in the United Kingdom than any other country, this writing service prides itself on its good customer service, often responding to early morning inquiries quickly.

EssayFactory Positives

Attractive website

Easy-to-use interface

Extensive range of subjects

Wide variety of services and extras

EssayFactory Drawbacks

Not all writers are professional

Money-back guarantee policy not clear

EssayFactory is also supposed to be a very ethical writing service as it maintains a strong "meeting the deadline" policy. This company also has a money-back guarantee policy, but it is a graduated guarantee depending on where the paper is currently at during the writing process.

If the paper has not been assigned, most likely, you will receive a 100% return on your money. But if the writer has started work on the paper, customers will receive between 50 to70% of their money back.

Along with the normal paper writing service, this company offers editing and proofreading services to make sure papers are given the best treatment before turning them in.

With an easy ordering process, customers should be able to get their assignment on the board within a few minutes. The cost is roughly 11 British Pounds per page if you put a 15-day deadline.

5. Essay-Company - Most Affordable Essay Writing Service

Some reviewers do not like this writing service and stated that the unprofessionalism overshadowed all the good aspects of this company. Other reviewers stated that this is a great writing service that comes through with its promises.

Good quality papers

On-time delivery

Looks after their clients

Negative reviews quickly addressed

VIP service available

Customer service not native English speakers

Some black SEO marketing tricks practiced

No matter which side of the fence you sit on, this is a good writing service to work with. Essay-company makes sure the assignments are all returned on time and at high-quality levels. Also, they do contact those negative review writers and talk to them about the service they received.

In addition to checking out those negative reviews, the company does offer a fair money-back guarantee as well as provide their clients with confidentiality. Like their competitors, this writing company also has a wide range of services it provides.

Their prices per page are said to be one of the lowest around, and an on-sight calculator helps users figure out their costs before they click that payment button. Then the paper is returned with high-quality content that should impress any professor.

The company's clear policies help the client know that nothing is being hidden from them when using this company for their writing needs.

Essay Writing Service Tips

Use These Services With Caution While they are not illegal to use, you could be charged with cheating and potentially face expulsion if your school finds out. To use papers written by these companies, you should rewrite them in your own words before turning them in.

Use a Plagiarism Checker Make sure to use your own plagiarism checker, as the ones employed by these companies are not known to be the best in the world.

Keep an Eye Out for Fake Sites There are a lot of fake writing services on the internet. They may be clones of reputable ones and exist only to steal your credit card information.

Look Out for Non-Native English Writers Watch out for the writers, as not all of these writing services employ native English speakers. You have to double-check their work to make sure the writing makes sense.

Best Paper Writing Service: The Bottom Line As long as teachers and universities keep assigning research papers, essays, and so on, there will be essay writing sites that offer their services to students as a way of "keeping on top of deadlines." Though whether students should rely on these sites falls into a bit of a grey area, it's ultimately their choice whether they decide to work with a trusted essay writing platform.

The pricing may be high, but then you are paying for experience, knowledge, and convenience. When students simply do not have the time to do the research themselves, these writing services come to the rescue.

All you have to do is pick the best of the best to make sure your content is top quality.

Essay tests are useful for teachers when they want students to select, organize, analyze, synthesize, and/or evaluate information. In other words, they rely on the upper levels of Bloom's Taxonomy . There are two types of essay questions: restricted and extended response.

  • Restricted Response - These essay questions limit what the student will discuss in the essay based on the wording of the question. For example, "State the main differences between John Adams' and Thomas Jefferson's beliefs about federalism," is a restricted response. What the student is to write about has been expressed to them within the question.
  • Extended Response - These allow students to select what they wish to include in order to answer the question. For example, "In Of Mice and Men , was George's killing of Lennie justified? Explain your answer." The student is given the overall topic, but they are free to use their own judgment and integrate outside information to help support their opinion.

Student Skills Required for Essay Tests

Before expecting students to perform well on either type of essay question, we must make sure that they have the required skills to excel. Following are four skills that students should have learned and practiced before taking essay exams:

  • The ability to select appropriate material from the information learned in order to best answer the question.
  • The ability to organize that material in an effective manner.
  • The ability to show how ideas relate and interact in a specific context.
  • The ability to write effectively in both sentences and paragraphs.

Constructing an Effective Essay Question

Following are a few tips to help in the construction of effective essay questions:

  • Begin with the lesson objectives in mind. Make sure to know what you wish the student to show by answering the essay question.
  • Decide if your goal requires a restricted or extended response. In general, if you wish to see if the student can synthesize and organize the information that they learned, then restricted response is the way to go. However, if you wish them to judge or evaluate something using the information taught during class, then you will want to use the extended response.
  • If you are including more than one essay, be cognizant of time constraints. You do not want to punish students because they ran out of time on the test.
  • Write the question in a novel or interesting manner to help motivate the student.
  • State the number of points that the essay is worth. You can also provide them with a time guideline to help them as they work through the exam.
  • If your essay item is part of a larger objective test, make sure that it is the last item on the exam.

Scoring the Essay Item

One of the downfalls of essay tests is that they lack in reliability. Even when teachers grade essays with a well-constructed rubric, subjective decisions are made. Therefore, it is important to try and be as reliable as possible when scoring your essay items. Here are a few tips to help improve reliability in grading:

  • Determine whether you will use a holistic or analytic scoring system before you write your rubric . With the holistic grading system, you evaluate the answer as a whole, rating papers against each other. With the analytic system, you list specific pieces of information and award points for their inclusion.
  • Prepare the essay rubric in advance. Determine what you are looking for and how many points you will be assigning for each aspect of the question.
  • Avoid looking at names. Some teachers have students put numbers on their essays to try and help with this.
  • Score one item at a time. This helps ensure that you use the same thinking and standards for all students.
  • Avoid interruptions when scoring a specific question. Again, consistency will be increased if you grade the same item on all the papers in one sitting.
  • If an important decision like an award or scholarship is based on the score for the essay, obtain two or more independent readers.
  • Beware of negative influences that can affect essay scoring. These include handwriting and writing style bias, the length of the response, and the inclusion of irrelevant material.
  • Review papers that are on the borderline a second time before assigning a final grade.

Get Organized Digitally

In the digital world, being organized is essential. If your online program is in a different state, you’ll need to manage your time zones to ensure you don’t miss any classes or deadlines.

You should also create folders on your computer for each class and organize files and documents so you can later find the information you need easier.

Setting up an email system is essential for online classes. Try creating separate folders for each class where you can store all the emails.

Also, developing a detailed checklist and actively eliminating distractions are crucial steps to maximize focus and productivity during virtual classes.

Start by setting up a dedicated workspace on your computer or device, where you can access all your class materials and assignments . Utilize digital calendars and task management apps to keep track of deadlines, class schedules, and important events.

One app that can help you is Todoist , which has ample resources as a task manager app. To find out more about it, you can check our full review!

Often times, students wonder what the point of writing assignments is, particularly if they don’t have plans to continue onto careers or college programs that are focused on writing. According to Penn Foster English instructor Selina Rush, writing assignments are geared towards college and career readiness. Writing will factor into any type of degree or job you decide to pursue, and features in many college courses. This means you’ll need strong writing skills to create a stand-out resume when applying for work.

Perhaps most important, though, is the fact that writing assignments help you to think critically and learn to research, as well as helping you to develop communication skills. They are good practice for learning how to express ideas by organizing thoughts, developing points, and making connections between ideas.

Wondering what your Penn Foster writing assignments will be like? Rush explains that it all depends on the particular course and when a student enrolled.

“When it comes to the written assignments, there are different ones depending on when the student enrolled. We have some that are just question answer exam—they ask you a question and you give your answer—and then we have some that are essay related. You’re writing an introduction, you’re writing body paragraphs, and you’re writing a conclusion. Some of them are more personal, where you’re writing about personal experiences, personal knowledge, and you don’t have to do any sort of research. But then we also have some of our courses where you write a research paper or an argument paper. The goal is to really find something that you’re passionate about. We’ve made the exams in a way that allows the student to get excited about it. When they’re in a traditional class, they don’t always get that option.”

The most common types of essays you’ll come across in high school are:

Persuasive essays are used to convince the reader of something in an informal, personal way.

Descriptive essays are meant to create a detailed understanding of something by using descriptive language. It can be anything from an object to a person, an emotion, an experience, etc.

Expository essays are meant to explain concepts, ideas, or facts. While they can be similar in idea to a persuasive essay, expository essays utilize evidence and research to lay out an idea in a more formal, matter-of-fact manner.

Narrative essays are also meant to tell a story; however, they are told often from a personal, first-person perspective based upon real experiences.

Regardless of the assignment, Rush also stresses that there is no need to panic, as writing assignments are not the end of the world. “We are here to help you … I mean, I love talking to students. Do not be afraid to ask for help.”

Though each essay assignment will be different when it comes to topic or subject, there are a few basic rules to follow to ensure you have a quality essay.

Knowing what you are supposed to write, or why you’re writing, is the first step to getting yourself in the right frame of mind to begin your task.

Researching your topic is extremely important, especially if you are writing an expository, persuasive, and even descriptive essay. This will help you formulate ideas and can even help you get excited or more interested in the assignment.

After researching and learning more about your topic, you’ll have a better idea of what you want to write about and why. If you are writing a persuasive essay, keep this sentence clear and direct.

Before you begin writing, it can help to form an outline. Outlines can help you organize your thoughts and break down the assignment into smaller, more digestible tasks. In addition to making writing less overwhelming, it can also help you format your essay so one idea flows more smoothly into the next.

Other key tips to help you write a good essay include starting each paragraph with a topic sentence (think of this like a mini thesis), writing in the same tense throughout the paper, proofreading, and (properly) citing sources if necessary.

Perhaps most importantly, Rush advises writing with honesty. “If it's something that's honest and it's true … if it comes from you and it's something you're passionate about or interested in, that makes it 10 times easier, because then you're just talking to us.”

Writing a good essay starts with planning. While some experienced writers may tell you that they sit down at their computer and the words just flow from their fingertips (because they might not even realize they are still pre-planning their work mentally), it’s important to know how to map out your essay before getting started. As a student, pre-writing steps not only help you organize your thoughts but also help you learn about all the small parts that come together to make a great essay.

So, when you get to your first course that requires an essay, start with these steps before you write your first paragraph.

What are you writing about? You don’t have to get super specific yet but figuring out what your essay will be about in general is step number one. For example, if you were writing this blog, the topic could be simply stated as: The topic of this blog is to give advice on writing a good essay.

Who is reading your essay? Who do you want to speak to or convince through your writing? Knowing who you’re writing for helps you decide the tone of the essay, what vocabulary to use, and even what information to include.

Consider the point of your essay, outside of your having to write it for a grade in school. What are you trying to accomplish? As an example, let’s go back to the idea that you’re writing this blog. The topic of the blog is to give readers advice on writing a good essay. The audience you’re writing to is mostly students, or readers thinking of becoming students. The purpose, then, is to help students understand how they can write a good essay.

As you’re getting into the habit of pre-writing, jot down your answers to each of these three things before diving into an essay so you’re focused on what you want to accomplish.

So you’ve done a bit of pre-writing and know your topic, audience, and the purpose of your essay. Awesome! It’s time to sit down and write that essay, right? Not so fast. The next step in the writing process — especially for students — is creating an outline of your essay. When you’re writing a paper for school, you can generally think of an outline as having five parts. These five parts can be translated into five separate paragraphs, although depending on your topic, you may find yourself writing more. The five parts of your essay include:

This is the paragraph where you open your essay, pull in the reader, and share your thesis statement. A thesis statement is one sentence that tells the reader your main idea and makes a claim. The rest of your essay follows up on this claim and supports your idea.

Let’s go back to the example of writing this blog. The reader needs to understand the process of writing but also why they should take this seemingly longer path to completing their essay. The best way to help the reader understand the value of the process is to use supporting data to show them that this is the best way. You might add in quotes from authorities on the topic or present data on how this process reduces the need for revisions. In the paragraph following your introduction, you need to support your claims with evidence. This same support will happen in the second and third paragraphs.

In your conclusion, you want to wrap up your essay. That can include repeating your main idea and also introducing a last and final piece of evidence that supports that idea.

By drafting an outline of your essay before writing it, you’re creating a map that you can follow even if you get a bit of writer’s block!

You’ve finished writing your essay and it’s time to upload and submit it to be graded. But before you do, have you read over your work at least once or twice? Proofreading is an essential step to any writing you do, from emails to research papers. You may feel confident that spell check is going to catch any mistakes or typos you make, the tool will alert you to many mistakes, but some slip through. Spell check can also miss grammar mistakes, and you may not realize you forgot a sentence or two that connects one idea to another.

When you’re done writing your first draft, take a break and walk away from your essay. If you immediately jump into proofreading, you may miss a thing or two yourself because you’re still close to what you just wrote. Whether you leave for an hour or a day, when you come back to your essay, you’ll be able to look it over with fresh eyes.

If you’re able to, have a friend or family member look over your essay after you made changes. They can catch anything missing or point out things they don’t understand that you may want to explain more.

Sometimes even the best writers get stuck. If this happens to you, it’s ok! First, take a step back. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you won’t be able to concentrate on writing something that makes sense, flows, and has all the points you want to focus on.

After you collect yourself, think about what the assignment is. High school English teacher, Shawn Cherinchak, advises students to go slowly and take their time. “Read the directions carefully. Read them slowly and carefully, because if you skip over something, you’re probably either not going to get that great of a grade or the paper will be returned to you.”

Once you have a full understanding of the directions, make an outline. An outline can help guide you on the structure of the paper, highlighting the points you want make and the ideas you want to cover. From there, it’s a little bit easier to “fill in the blanks”, which are the detailed parts of those ideas.

Most importantly, if you feel like you’re really struggling, Cherinchak wants you to know that help is available. “If students could call us, they could e-mail US, chat with us, send us a text … And a lot of times even non-English instructors can answer their questions if they’re general. But Selena and I are the English instructors and we're more than happy to help anyone who reaches out to us.”

If you’re still worried that you will never be able to write a good essay, remember this: the more you do it, the more you learn. Following pre-writing steps, building an outline, and proofreading your essay as much as possible before submitting it can make a big difference. Not only will you become more familiar with the writing process, but you’ll also start to notice how you get better with each draft. And if you’re still unsure of your writing skills, the benefit of taking courses with Penn Foster is that you can go at your own pace. There’s no hard deadline to meet so if it takes you a week or four to write your essay, that’s okay! You have the time to make your essay what you want it to be before submitting it through your student portal.

Essay test: types, advantages and limitations | statistics.

quality writers essay test

ADVERTISEMENTS:

After reading this article you will learn about:- 1. Introduction to Essay Test 2. Types of Essay Test 3. Advantages 4. Limitations 5. Suggestions.

Introduction to Essay Test:

The essay tests are still commonly used tools of evaluation, despite the increasingly wider applicability of the short answer and objective type questions.

There are certain outcomes of learning (e.g., organising, summarising, integrating ideas and expressing in one’s own way) which cannot be satisfactorily measured through objective type tests. The importance of essay tests lies in the measurement of such instructional outcomes.

An essay test may give full freedom to the students to write any number of pages. The required response may vary in length. An essay type question requires the pupil to plan his own answer and to explain it in his own words. The pupil exercises considerable freedom to select, organise and present his ideas. Essay type tests provide a better indication of pupil’s real achievement in learning. The answers provide a clue to nature and quality of the pupil’s thought process.

That is, we can assess how the pupil presents his ideas (whether his manner of presentation is coherent, logical and systematic) and how he concludes. In other words, the answer of the pupil reveals the structure, dynamics and functioning of pupil’s mental life.

The essay questions are generally thought to be the traditional type of questions which demand lengthy answers. They are not amenable to objective scoring as they give scope for halo-effect, inter-examiner variability and intra-examiner variability in scoring.

Types of Essay Test:

There can be many types of essay tests:

Some of these are given below with examples from different subjects:

1. Selective Recall.

e.g. What was the religious policy of Akbar?

2. Evaluative Recall.

e.g. Why did the First War of Independence in 1857 fail?

3. Comparison of two things—on a single designated basis.

e.g. Compare the contributions made by Dalton and Bohr to Atomic theory.

4. Comparison of two things—in general.

e.g. Compare Early Vedic Age with the Later Vedic Age.

5. Decision—for or against.

e.g. Which type of examination do you think is more reliable? Oral or Written. Why?

6. Causes or effects.

e.g. Discuss the effects of environmental pollution on our lives.

7. Explanation of the use or exact meaning of some phrase in a passage or a sentence.

e.g., Joint Stock Company is an artificial person. Explain ‘artificial person’ bringing out the concepts of Joint Stock Company.

8. Summary of some unit of the text or of some article.

9. Analysis

e.g. What was the role played by Mahatma Gandhi in India’s freedom struggle?

10. Statement of relationship.

e.g. Why is knowledge of Botany helpful in studying agriculture?

11. Illustration or examples (your own) of principles in science, language, etc.

e.g. Illustrate the correct use of subject-verb position in an interrogative sentence.

12. Classification.

e.g. Classify the following into Physical change and Chemical change with explanation. Water changes to vapour; Sulphuric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide react to produce Sodium Sulphate and Water; Rusting of Iron; Melting of Ice.

13. Application of rules or principles in given situations.

e.g. If you sat halfway between the middle and one end of a sea-saw, would a person sitting on the other end have to be heavier or lighter than you in order to make the sea-saw balance in the middle. Why?

14. Discussion.

e.g. Partnership is a relationship between persons who have agreed to share the profits of a business carried on by all or any of them acting for all. Discuss the essentials of partnership on the basis of this partnership.

15. Criticism—as to the adequacy, correctness, or relevance—of a printed statement or a classmate’s answer to a question on the lesson.

e.g. What is the wrong with the following statement?

The Prime Minister is the sovereign Head of State in India.

16. Outline.

e.g. Outline the steps required in computing the compound interest if the principal amount, rate of interest and time period are given as P, R and T respectively.

17. Reorganization of facts.

e.g. The student is asked to interview some persons and find out their opinion on the role of UN in world peace. In the light of data thus collected he/she can reorganise what is given in the text book.

18. Formulation of questions-problems and questions raised.

e.g. After reading a lesson the pupils are asked to raise related problems- questions.

19. New methods of procedure

e.g. Can you solve this mathematical problem by using another method?

Advantages of the Essay Tests:

1. It is relatively easier to prepare and administer a six-question extended- response essay test than to prepare and administer a comparable 60-item multiple-choice test items.

2. It is the only means that can assess an examinee’s ability to organise and present his ideas in a logical and coherent fashion.

3. It can be successfully employed for practically all the school subjects.

4. Some of the objectives such as ability to organise idea effectively, ability to criticise or justify a statement, ability to interpret, etc., can be best measured by this type of test.

5. Logical thinking and critical reasoning, systematic presentation, etc. can be best developed by this type of test.

6. It helps to induce good study habits such as making outlines and summaries, organising the arguments for and against, etc.

7. The students can show their initiative, the originality of their thought and the fertility of their imagination as they are permitted freedom of response.

8. The responses of the students need not be completely right or wrong. All degrees of comprehensiveness and accuracy are possible.

9. It largely eliminates guessing.

10. They are valuable in testing the functional knowledge and power of expression of the pupil.

Limitations of Essay Tests:

1. One of the serious limitations of the essay tests is that these tests do not give scope for larger sampling of the content. You cannot sample the course content so well with six lengthy essay questions as you can with 60 multiple-choice test items.

2. Such tests encourage selective reading and emphasise cramming.

3. Moreover, scoring may be affected by spelling, good handwriting, coloured ink, neatness, grammar, length of the answer, etc.

4. The long-answer type questions are less valid and less reliable, and as such they have little predictive value.

5. It requires an excessive time on the part of students to write; while assessing, reading essays is very time-consuming and laborious.

6. It can be assessed only by a teacher or competent professionals.

7. Improper and ambiguous wording handicaps both the students and valuers.

8. Mood of the examiner affects the scoring of answer scripts.

9. There is halo effect-biased judgement by previous impressions.

10. The scores may be affected by his personal bias or partiality for a particular point of view, his way of understanding the question, his weightage to different aspect of the answer, favouritism and nepotism, etc.

Thus, the potential disadvantages of essay type questions are :

(i) Poor predictive validity,

(ii) Limited content sampling,

(iii) Scores unreliability, and

(iv) Scoring constraints.

Suggestions for Improving Essay Tests:

The teacher can sometimes, through essay tests, gain improved insight into a student’s abilities, difficulties and ways of thinking and thus have a basis for guiding his/her learning.

(A) White Framing Questions:

1. Give adequate time and thought to the preparation of essay questions, so that they can be re-examined, revised and edited before they are used. This would increase the validity of the test.

2. The item should be so written that it will elicit the type of behaviour the teacher wants to measure. If one is interested in measuring understanding, he should not ask a question that will elicit an opinion; e.g.,

“What do you think of Buddhism in comparison to Jainism?”

3. Use words which themselves give directions e.g. define, illustrate, outline, select, classify, summarise, etc., instead of discuss, comment, explain, etc.

4. Give specific directions to students to elicit the desired response.

5. Indicate clearly the value of the question and the time suggested for answering it.

6. Do not provide optional questions in an essay test because—

(i) It is difficult to construct questions of equal difficulty;

(ii) Students do not have the ability to select those questions which they will answer best;

(iii) A good student may be penalised because he is challenged by the more difficult and complex questions.

7. Prepare and use a relatively large number of questions requiring short answers rather than just a few questions involving long answers.

8. Do not start essay questions with such words as list, who, what, whether. If we begin the questions with such words, they are likely to be short-answer question and not essay questions, as we have defined the term.

9. Adapt the length of the response and complexity of the question and answer to the maturity level of the students.

10. The wording of the questions should be clear and unambiguous.

11. It should be a power test rather than a speed test. Allow a liberal time limit so that the essay test does not become a test of speed in writing.

12. Supply the necessary training to the students in writing essay tests.

13. Questions should be graded from simple to complex so that all the testees can answer atleast a few questions.

14. Essay questions should provide value points and marking schemes.

(B) While Scoring Questions:

1. Prepare a marking scheme, suggesting the best possible answer and the weightage given to the various points of this model answer. Decide in advance which factors will be considered in evaluating an essay response.

2. While assessing the essay response, one must:

a. Use appropriate methods to minimise bias;

b. Pay attention only to the significant and relevant aspects of the answer;

c. Be careful not to let personal idiosyncrasies affect assessment;

d. Apply a uniform standard to all the papers.

3. The examinee’s identity should be concealed from the scorer. By this we can avoid the “halo effect” or “biasness” which may affect the scoring.

4. Check your marking scheme against actual responses.

5. Once the assessment has begun, the standard should not be changed, nor should it vary from paper to paper or reader to reader. Be consistent in your assessment.

6. Grade only one question at a time for all papers. This will help you in minimising the halo effect in becoming thoroughly familiar with just one set of scoring criteria and in concentrating completely on them.

7. The mechanics of expression (legibility, spelling, punctuation, grammar) should be judged separately from what the student writes, i.e. the subject matter content.

8. If possible, have two independent readings of the test and use the average as the final score.

TOEFL Integrated Writing Task

The Integrated Writing task requires you to use listening, reading, and writing skills.  For this task, you’ll have three minutes to read a short passage, then you’ll listen to a short (approximately two-minute long) audio clip of a speaker discussing the same topic the written passage covers.

You’ll have 20 minutes to plan and write a response that references both of these sources in order to answer the question . You won’t discuss your own opinion. During the writing time, you’ll be able to look at the written passage again, but you won’t be able to re-hear the audio clip. You’ll be able to take notes while you listen to it though. The suggested response length for this task is 150-225 words.

Integrated Writing Example Prompt

You have three minutes to read the following passage and take notes. In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team. Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise, and skills than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the numbers of people involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is more likely to make risky decisions that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.

Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by that decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to “shine,” to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a team’s overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.

Now listen to part of a lecture on the topic you just read about.

(Professor) Now I want to tell you about what one company found when it decided that it would turn over some of its new projects to teams of people, and make the team responsible for planning the projects and getting the work done. After about six months, the company took a look at how well the teams performed. On virtually every team, some members got almost a “free ride” … they didn’t contribute much at all, but if their team did a good job, they nevertheless benefited from the recognition the team got. And what about group members who worked especially well and who provided a lot of insight on problems and issues? Well…the recognition for a job well done went to the group as a whole, no names were named. So it won’t surprise you to learn that when the real contributors were asked how they felt about the group process, their attitude was just the opposite of what the reading predicts. Another finding was that some projects just didn’t move very quickly. Why? Because it took so long to reach consensus…it took many, many meetings to build the agreement among group members about how they would move the project along. On the other hand, there were other instances where one or two people managed to become very influential over what their group did. Sometimes when those influencers said “That will never work” about an idea the group was developing, the idea was quickly dropped instead of being further discussed. And then there was another occasion when a couple influencers convinced the group that a plan of theirs was “highly creative.” And even though some members tried to warn the rest of the group that the project was moving in directions that might not work, they were basically ignored by other group members. Can you guess the ending to *this* story? When the project failed, the blame was placed on all the members of the group.

You have 20 minutes to plan and write your response. Your response will be judged on the basis of the quality of your writing and on how well your response presents the points in the lecture and their relationship to the reading passage. Typically, an effective response will be 150 to 225 words.

Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, explaining how they cast doubt on points made in the reading.

TOEFL Integrated Writing Sample Essay

The lecturer talks about research conducted by a firm that used the group system to handle their work. He says that the theory stated in the passage was very different and somewhat inaccurate when compared to what happened for real.

First, some members got free rides. That is, some didn’t work hard but gotrecognition for the success nontheless. This also indicates that people who worked hard was not given recognition they should have got. In other words, they weren’t given the oppotunity to “shine”. This derectly contradicts what the passage indicates.

Second, groups were slow in progress. The passage says that groups are nore responsive than individuals because of the number of people involved and their aggregated resources. However, the speaker talks about how the firm found out that groups were slower than individuals in dicision making. Groups needed more time for meetings, which are neccesary procceedures in decision making. This was another part where experience contradicted theory.

Third, influetial people might emerge, and lead the group towards glory or failure. If the influent people are going in the right direction there would be no problem. But in cases where they go in the wrong direction, there is nobody that has enough influence to counter the decision made. In other words, the group might turn into a dictatorship, with the influential party as the leader, and might be less flexible in thinking. They might become one-sided, and thus fail to succeed.

TOEFL Writing Sample Analysis

There are three key things this TOEFL example essay does that results in its high score:

  • Clearly presents main points
  • Contrasts lecture and reading points
  • Few grammatical/spelling errors

This essay clearly organizes the three main points made in the lecture,  which is what the first part of the prompt asked for. (“Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard.”) There is one paragraph for each point, and the point is clearly stated within the first sentence of the paragraph followed by specific details from the lecture. This organization makes it easy to follow the writer’s thinking and see that they understood the lecture.

Additionally, the essay clearly contrasts points made in the lecture with points made in the reading. Each main paragraph includes an example of how the two are different, and the writer makes these differences clear by using words and phrases such as “however” and “this directly contradicts.” Stating these differences answers the second part of the prompt (“explain how they cast doubt on points made in the reading”) and shows that the writer understood both the lecture and reading well enough to differentiate between the two.

Finally, there are only a few minor spelling and grammar error s, the most noticeable of which is the incorrect use of the word “influent” in the final paragraph (it should be “influential”), and they do not detract from the meaning of the essay. This writer shows a strong grasp of the English language, a key TOEFL skill.

This essay shows that the writer understood the main points of both the lecture and the reading well enough to both describe them and contrast them. That, along with the relatively few mechanical errors, gives the essay a top score.

Top-Scoring Independent TOEFL Writing Sample

Below is an official Independent Writing prompt and top-scoring sample essay. Beneath the essay we analyze what about the essay resulted in it receiving a top score.

Independent Writing Example Prompt

Directions Read the question below. You have 30 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay. Typically, an effective essay will contain a minimum of 300 words.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Always telling the truth is the most important consideration in any relationship. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Independent TOEFL Writing Sample Essay

the traditional virtue of telling the truth in all situations is increasingly doubted by many in today’s world. many believe that telling the truth is not always the best policy when dealing with people. moreover, the line of a “truth” is becoming more and more vague. this essay will explore the importance of telling the truth in relationships between people.

we all understand that often the truth is offending and may not be a very nice thing to both hear or say. lies or white lies often have their advantages. the manipulation of white lies is the most obvious the business world. how many times have we heard that some product is “the finest” or “the cheapest”? how many times have we heard that products have such and such “magical functions”? advertising is about persuasion, and many would agree that if a company is to tell the absolute truth about it’s products, no one would be interested in even having a look at the products.

the same logic applies to human relationships. if your friend had worn a newly purchased dress on her birthday and energetically asked you if it was a worthy buy, would you freely express your opinion that you had never seen a dress as the one she’s currently wearing? and spoil her birthday? unarguably, hiding(entirely or particially) the truth in some situations can be quite handy indeed. confrontations and disputes can seemingly be avoided.

however, there is always the risk factor of the truth emerging sooner or later when telling an untruth. the basic trust in any relationships(businessman/customer, friends, parents/children) will be blotched, and would have an impact on the future relationship between both parties. the story of the “the boy who cried wolf” fully illustrates the consequenes of telling untruths. no one will believe you when you’re telling the truth. your word will have no weighting.

in addition, another “bad factor” of telling untruths is that you have absolutely no control over when the truth(of previous untruths) will emerge. untruths breed pain in both parties: tears when the truth is uncovered after a period of time; fear and the burden of sharing a “secret”. in the long run, it seems that hiding the truth is not beneficial to either party. everyone hates betrayal. even if it is the trend to occasionally hide the truth in relationships, it is strongly recommended that not to follow that trend as the risk and the consequences of the truth unfolded overwhelms the minimal advantages one can derive from not telling the truth. afterall, it is understood that relationships are founded on “trust” which goes hand in hand with “truth”. indeed telling the truth is the most important consideration in any relationship between people. always.

There are three key things this essay does that results in its high score, and each is explained in more detail below.

  • Is well organized
  • Uses specific examples

The essay, like the first one, is well organized. The writer’s position is clear within the first few sentences, and the rest of the essay elaborates on that position. Each paragraph begins with a new major point that is then explained. This logical flow of ideas is easy for readers to follow and shows that the writer knows how to set up a clear argument.

Another reason the essay received a top score is because the writer used specific examples to make her point. By using specific examples, such as a friend buying a new outfit and asking your opinion and phrases businesses use to sell products, the writer makes her argument stronger and more concrete.

Finally, despite the lack of capitalization throughout the essay, there are few spelling and grammatical errors, and the ones that do exist don’t detract from the meaning of the essay or make it confusing to understand. This shows a strong command of English and the ability to write in-depth essays that are clear and get their point across.

How I Use Technology to Enhance My Nursing Practice

quality writers essay test

We have interviewed a nurse who has been working in one of the New York clinics for 5 years. Here is her success story and answers to all the questions you may be interested in. 'As a nurse, technology has become an integral part of my daily practice. From improving patient care to streamlining administrative tasks, technological advancements have significantly enhanced the way I perform my duties. Here’s a detailed look at how technology impacts nursing, addresses the common question of whether nurses can be replaced by technology, and highlights recent trends and advancements in the field.

How Does Technology Affect Nursing

If you ever wondered how to become a nurse practitioner I will tell you that today is much easier than it was few years ago due to the rise of technologies.

Improved Patient Care

Technologies like Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and Electronic Medication Management Systems (EMMS) are game-changers in nursing practice. EHRs provide real-time access to patient data, ensuring that all healthcare providers have up-to-date information. This reduces errors , streamlines documentation, and enhances communication among the healthcare team.

Efficiency and Time Management

Automated IV pumps, smart beds, and portable diagnostic devices have greatly improved efficiency in nursing. These technologies handle routine tasks, allowing nurses to focus on more critical aspects of patient care. For example, smart beds monitor patient movement and vitals, reducing the risk of falls and other injuries.

Telehealth and Remote Monitoring

The rise of telehealth has expanded healthcare access, especially for patients in remote or underserved areas. Telehealth platforms facilitate virtual consultations and remote patient monitoring, ensuring continuous care without the need for physical visits. This is particularly beneficial for managing chronic conditions and reducing hospital readmissions .

Patient Safety and Error Reduction

Technologies such as barcoded medication administration and smart infusion pumps minimize the risk of medication errors. These systems ensure accurate dosing and administration, which is crucial in critical care settings. Furthermore, automated alerts and reminders help in maintaining patient safety and adherence to treatment protocols.

Can Nurses Be Replaced By Technology

While technology has significantly improved nursing practice, it cannot replace the essential human touch that nurses provide. Nursing is a compassionate profession that relies heavily on interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. According to a survey , 82% of nurses agree that technology positively impacts patient care but emphasize that human interaction remains irreplaceable.

Robotic assistance and AI can handle repetitive tasks, but they lack the ability to understand and respond to the emotional and psychological needs of patients. For instance, comforting a patient, providing emotional support, and understanding non-verbal cues are aspects of care that technology cannot replicate. Therefore, technology should be seen as a tool to enhance nursing practice, not replace it.

Recent Trends and Advancements in Nursing Careers

Trend/Technology 🔥 Description 📄
Health Informatics 💻 Health informatics is becoming a mainstream specialization, utilizing data from IT systems to improve patient care. Informatics nurses play a crucial role in managing and analyzing health data, leading to better decision-making and patient outcomes.
Portable Diagnostic Devices 🩺 Portable devices like handheld EKGs and ultrasound machines allow nurses to perform diagnostic tests quickly and efficiently. These devices are particularly useful in home health settings and for patients with mobility issues.
Wearable Technology ⌚ Wearable devices continuously monitor patients' vital signs and transmit data to healthcare providers in real-time. This technology is vital for managing chronic diseases and ensuring timely medical interventions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics 🤖 AI applications in nursing include predictive analytics for patient outcomes and robotic assistance for routine tasks. These technologies enhance efficiency and accuracy in patient care, allowing nurses to focus more on direct patient interactions.
Telehealth Expansion 🌐 The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of telehealth services, which continue to be integral in providing accessible care. Telehealth enables remote consultations, follow-ups, and chronic disease management, ensuring continuity of care regardless of location.
Bilingual Nurses 🌍 With the increasing diversity of the U.S. population, bilingual nurses, particularly those fluent in Spanish, are becoming more valuable. This skill helps in providing better care and communication with a broader patient base.
Specialization in Nursing 🏅 More nurses are choosing to specialize in fields such as family health, psychiatry, and critical care. Specialization allows nurses to command higher salaries and meet the growing demand for advanced nursing skills.
Holistic Care 🌿 There is a growing focus on holistic care, which addresses the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and environmental aspects of a patient's well-being. Holistic nursing practices are shown to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Mobile Device Usage 📱 The use of mobile devices among bedside nurses has increased dramatically, enhancing communication, documentation, and access to information. This trend is expected to continue, further integrating technology into everyday nursing practice.
Health Informatics 💻 The field of health informatics is growing, utilizing data to create more collaborative environments between patients and healthcare providers. Informatics nurses are crucial in managing this data to improve care quality and efficiency.

What is Virtual Simulation

As a nurse, I've seen firsthand how virtual simulation is transforming nursing education. This innovative tool provides a realistic, immersive training experience that allows nursing students to practice and refine their skills in a safe, controlled environment. Here’s how virtual simulation is enhancing my practice and the broader field of nursing education.

Virtual simulation in nursing education involves using advanced computer software to create realistic clinical scenarios. These simulations range from simple tasks like administering medication to complex patient interactions and emergency responses. The goal is to mimic real-life clinical environments as closely as possible, providing students with hands-on experience without the risk of harming actual patients.

Benefits of Virtual Simulation in Nursing Education

Benefit 🌟 Description 📄
Enhanced Learning Experience 🎓 Virtual simulation offers an interactive and engaging learning experience. I've found that being able to practice clinical skills repeatedly until I achieve proficiency is crucial. According to a study by the National League for Nursing, students who participated in virtual simulations showed significant improvement in their critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills.
Safe Learning Environment 🏥 One of the primary advantages of virtual simulation is the ability to learn and make mistakes in a risk-free environment. This is particularly important in healthcare education, where errors in a real clinical setting can have serious consequences. Virtual simulations allow me to experiment and learn from my mistakes without endangering patients.
Accessibility and Flexibility 🌐 Virtual simulations can be accessed from anywhere, making them an ideal solution for remote learning. This flexibility was especially beneficial during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical access to clinical sites was limited. Institutions like Western Governors University have integrated virtual simulation into their nursing programs to ensure continuous, uninterrupted training for their students.
Standardized Training 📚 Virtual simulation ensures that all students receive a consistent level of training. In traditional clinical settings, the variability of patient cases and instructor availability can lead to discrepancies in learning experiences. Virtual simulations standardize the training process, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to practice a wide range of scenarios.
Immediate Feedback and Assessment 📝 Many virtual simulation platforms provide instant feedback and detailed performance assessments. This immediate feedback helps me identify areas for improvement and allows instructors to tailor their teaching strategies to address specific needs. Studies have shown that timely feedback is crucial for effective learning and skill development.

Implementing Virtual Simulation in Nursing Curricula

Integrating virtual simulation into nursing curricula requires careful planning and investment. Here’s how it can be done successfully:

Selecting the Right Platform ‍

Choosing a reliable and comprehensive virtual simulation platform is critical. Platforms like Shadow Health, Laerdal, and SimX offer a wide range of scenarios and features designed specifically for nursing education. These platforms often include interactive patient cases, real-time feedback, and detailed analytics to track student performance.

Training Faculty and Students ‍

Effective use of virtual simulation technology requires proper training for both faculty and students. Faculty members need to be proficient in using the simulation software and integrating it into their teaching methods. Students should receive orientation sessions to familiarize them with the technology and its applications in their coursework.

Incorporating Simulations into the Curriculum ‍

Virtual simulations should be strategically incorporated into the nursing curriculum to complement traditional learning methods. This can include using simulations for initial skill acquisition, reinforcing theoretical concepts, and assessing student competence. Integrating simulations with other educational tools, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), can further enhance the learning experience.

Evaluating Outcomes ‍

Continuous evaluation is essential to measure the effectiveness of virtual simulations in achieving educational goals. This involves collecting data on student performance, feedback from instructors, and outcomes in clinical practice. Institutions should use this data to refine their simulation programs and ensure they meet the evolving needs of nursing education.

Challenges and Future Directions

While virtual simulation offers numerous benefits, there are also challenges to consider. The initial cost of simulation technology can be high, and institutions must allocate resources for ongoing maintenance and updates. Additionally, there is a learning curve associated with adopting new technologies, which may require additional support for faculty and students.

Looking ahead, the future of virtual simulation in nursing education is promising. Advances in technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, are expected to further enhance the realism and effectiveness of simulations. AI-driven simulations can adapt to individual student needs, providing personalized learning experiences that are tailored to their skill levels and learning styles.

Moreover, the integration of VR and AR technologies is set to revolutionize the way nursing students interact with simulations. These immersive technologies can create highly realistic, 3D environments that allow students to practice complex procedures and patient interactions in a more engaging and effective manner. In case you need to write an essay on nursing research topics , our experts are ready to help with this anytime.

The integration of technology in nursing practice has brought numerous benefits, from improving patient care and safety to enhancing efficiency and reducing errors. However, it is essential to balance these technological advancements with the irreplaceable human touch that defines nursing. By staying updated on the latest trends and integrating these tools into daily practice, nurses can continue to provide exceptional care in an evolving healthcare landscape.

How to Speak English with 10 Tips and Tricks

AAWP: Meniscus literary journal

The Australasian Association of Writing Programs (AAWP) publishes the literary journal Meniscus and the writing journal TEXT , and hosts a number of creative writing competitions.

Meniscus is an online, free access literary journal. The editors and advisory board are based in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and welcome submissions from writers of all backgrounds, identities, nationalities and ethnicities, anywhere in the world. Meniscus publishes high quality, innovative poetry, prose poetry, short fiction, flash fiction and creative essays in English, or in other languages with a good parallel translation.

We don't accept work produced by generative AI, except where it may include a creative interaction between person and machine, and where the role of the AI is clearly explained.

We do accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that you advise us if one of your pieces is accepted by another publisher before you hear from us.

We do accept your work if it has appeared on social media, or your own blog, but not if it has been published elsewhere.

Meniscus has two issues a year — the first around April/May, the second around October/November. We open for submissions usually from 1 Nov to 15 Jan, and for 1 June to 15 Aug for the second, and usually don't begin reading the submissions until the closing date.

The Australian Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund provided funding for the journal until 2019. At present, we regret, we cannot guarantee funding for any other contributors.

Submissions are now open for the second issue of Meniscus for 2024. Please send work on any theme, in the following forms:

* up to three poems , collected in a single document (poems should be max 75 lines each, or up to 250 words for prose poems); and/or

* up to three flash fiction stories, collected in a single document (max 500 words for each piece); and/or

* up to two prose pieces of up to 3,000 words each

Include a brief bio note (50-75 words)

Include a confirmation that it is your own work , and not previously published .

Given the complexities and multiplicities of the term 'unpublished' in this digital age, we nuance the term ' unpublished ' (following the position taken by Rattle literary journal) , to mean 'uncurated': that is, it should not have appeared in any 'curated' collection : a book, magazine, anthology, whether online or printed. If you've simply shared your work on social media or blogs, we define that as uncurated, and we are happy to see it submitted.

Please advise us if it is being simultaneously submitted to other literary outlets. We are happy to accept multiple submissions, but please let us know immediately if you work has been accepted by another publisher.

We are not interested in work that is the product of generative AI . If you are experimenting in creative ways with AI, and are keen to showcase the work, please include a brief statement about what you were working on, how AI responded, and what your interaction was with the platform you used.

                                                                                 *         *          *

We are interested in any work you send, and also particularly interested in work that pushes the limits of the form/s, plays with voice, mode and style, or whatever else interests you. Feel free to contact us ahead of time if you would like to discuss your ideas.

We look forward to reading your work.
