I got a golden opportunity to visit the famous historic National Museum in New Delhi. The museum building is robust and majestic. The museum has various departments that have collectibles and artifacts on different subjects and historical periods on display. I saw numerous images, articles, sculptures, and scriptures– palm leaf and rock engravings and many other articles of great value and interest as we entered the ground floor of the museum. The entire museum is divided into different departments like the archaeological division, anthropological division, display section, etc.

On going to the first floor we saw paintings, murals, charts amongst the various other things. There were manuscripts in different languages on display. We saw various ancient weapons, robes, and dresses on display. One of the corners is dedicated to the numismatics section. This section has coins from different periods put on display.

There are the realistic paintings of Ellora caves alongside beautiful replicas of the Ajanta frescoes in one hall. In addition to these, the paintings depicting the lives of Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, and Lord Buddha through scriptures and charts are also put on display. One could truly discover the glorious history of India after having a look at this section.

We saw the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization on the second floor. There are the excavations from Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Lothal, Kalibanga, and Ropar put on display. The broken pitchers, toys, stones, beads, skulls, etc. reflect a lot about the civilization of those times. We were really surprised to find out how advanced that civilization was.

The third floor belongs to the military equipment section. The weapons from the ancient times, such as the spears and pruning hooks, swords and sheaths, shields and helmets, different types of dresses of the commanders and generals from the past ages are showcased. It was a thrilling experience. Seeing all the equipment and attires of the past heroes of our nation was too inspiring for us.

The whole museum is a treasure trove of the history of India. You learn about the history of great men of India and their morals. The laurels, legends, and historical facts are connected with an entire gamut of literature and the life of India. Whether they were poets or prose writers, scientists or galaxy-gazers, dancers or dramatists, musicians or doctors, songsters or sculptors, lawgivers, or lexicographers, you get to experience their lives from the past through the remains curated and put on display.

A place where old relics are kept on display for the public is known as a museum. A visit to a museum expands our knowledge of the past. I had a chance to visit the National Museum in New Delhi. A friend accompanied me to the museum. It is a huge building divided into different sections. There are various exhibits in each section.

We saw the stars in our galaxy first. The stars are painted on the ceiling of the dome. We felt like we were in the galaxy of stars for real. We then moved on to another section that had weapons of ancient times. They were arranged in a manner to depict the battle scenes. The household goods from ancient times were kept in the adjacent room to display the domestic life of the ancient people. There were a lot of things made by Indian scientists that were on display. Models of dams and hydroelectric projects, solar cookers, solar light systems, etc. that help us understand how far Indians have come after Independence are put on display in this museum. 

We kept moving on to one section from the other and learned a lot about our country’s rich past. We did have a great time at the museum and we are looking forward to our next visit.

A short trip the the PAF Museum Karachi

Few places have impressed me more than the PAF Museum, Karachi. With or without family it is the place to and spend a day looking at the plethora of aircrafts from the jets, to helicopters and transporters that have at one time been in service with the Pakistan Air Force. The place is located on Main Sharah e Faisal (right side) while going towards the Jinnah International Airport. Sprawled over acres of land the museum is mostly outdoor, with a hangar that houses some war memorabilia, the Quaid’s aircraft, a scaled down model of the JF-17 thunder, the history of Aviation depicted by small models of aircrafts and a heroes section.

Well I won’t bore you more write up, enjoy the pictorial!

History of Pakistan Air Force

In 1933, the British colonial administration of India built the first air force base on the continent close to Drigh Road when Karachi, a coastal megacity in Pakistan with over ten million residents, was a 250,000-person town. This station is now known as Shara-e-Faisal Air Force Base. 

Following World War II’s end, Britain could not continue to denounce the persistent call for independence made by the people of South Asia. On August 14 and 15, 1947, Pakistan and India became two independent states. In the distribution of resources, India received the lion’s share of military assets. As a result of India’s hostility toward the emergence of the Muslim nation on the subcontinent, Pakistan’s Army, Navy, and Air Force did not receive the small amounts of weapons and equipment officially acknowledged as Pakistan’s rightful share allocated by the departing British. At the time of its founding, the RPAF had only 16 fighter aircraft.

In 1947, a spontaneous revolt by the Kashmiri people and Hindu Raja led to the first conflict between Pakistan and India. Young Pakistan’s air force had to work around the clock to airlift and drop desperately needed supplies to Pakistani troops, who eventually stopped the Indian aggressors’ advance. Since then, PAF has played an integral role in the country’s defense in every battle and fought bravely. The 1965 and 1971 wars with India are testimony to this fact. Its commitment to safeguarding peace has been an indomitable force in securing our borders with China, India, and Afghanistan. Since its establishment, PAF has been at the forefront of defending Pakistan’s borders from aerial threats.

There are four sub-galleries inside; one presents model aircraft and paintings that illustrate the history of aerial conflict, and the other displays various fighter aircraft models from around the globe. Two galleries are devoted to “SHUHUDA” and the combatants from the wars of 1965 and 1971. Operation Swift Retort is the focus of one recently created gallery.

Parking Space at PAF Museum

You can drive your car to the PAF Museum Parking lot outside the Museum or park in onsite parking meters. Motorcycles, scooters, and rickshaws have to pay PKR 30 for parking slots, while cars have to pay PKR 50. A bus or coaster must pay PKR 300. Parking attendants will take payment at the parking slot.

PAF Museum Ticket Price

To visit the PAF Museum Karachi, you must purchase tickets at the gate. The admission cost for adults is 100 rupees and 50 rupees for children (3-12 years) and students with ID cards. In addition, defense personnel and their families must pay PKR 50. Senior citizens above 60 years, Handicapes, and children below three years are free to enter.

Pakistan Air Force Museum Karachi is open daily throughout the year. Its timings are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM from Monday to Thursday and from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Friday. It is open on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 10 PM.

Located adjacent to the PAF Base Faisal on the main Shahrah-e-Faisal, PAF Museum was inaugurated on 14th August, 1997 by the then Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Abbas Khattak; and subsequently opened to the general public in October, 1997.

“PAF Museum not only preserves the history of PAF but also helps create greater harmony between the PAF and general public. It also carries and conveys an inherent message that we can make and maintain our environment clean and green by collective efforts!”

Amid the lush green lawns, different aircraft including,F-86 Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, Mirage, FT-6, F-6, T-33, U-Mig15, MFI-17 (Mushshak), Aero Commander, Antonov An-12, Beech D-95A (Travel Air), T-6G (Harvard), Huskie (Helicopter), etc and other Air Defence equipment have been displayed. Besides, a souvenir shop has also been established for the visitors.

A huge archives gallery houses the other rare relics like the Viking – Quaid-e-Azam’s aircraft, an Indian Gnat aircraft which was force landed at Pasroor in 1965 war and many more. Four PCs have also been placed inside the archives gallery, which provide information about different aspects of the PAF. There are four sub-galleries inside; one depicts the history of aerial warfare through model aircraft and paintings while the other one shows different fighter aircraft models of the world. Two galleries are dedicated to the “SHOHADA” and heroes of 1965 & 1971 wars. There are two open galleries: one shows the achievements of different squadrons while the other one shows the achievements / history of PAF Bases through rare photographs and the reprints of paintings.

Moreover, Schools / Institutional and organizational visits are also conducted by the museum. Advance co-ordination and information of these visits is appreciated to facilitate the visitors.

A canteen caters for small needs of the visitors. Cold / hot drinks, mineral water, beverages and snacks are available at market rates. A fun land for the children with swings and merry-go-rounds is also available. The newly installed entertainment simulator is a new and unique experience to the visitors.

About the PAF Museum

Pakistan’s Air Force plays a major role in keeping Pakistan protected and allowing us to enjoy nights after nights of peaceful sleep, and this museum is all about paying tribute to the new and old heroes that have laid down their lives for the nation. The museum also hosts a number of aircraft, some captured from the enemy, and others that are retired from service. These fighter planes are mainly on display in the open-air museum within the park, but some are protected within the hangar that serves as the Archives Gallery for the museum.

Located next to the PAF Base Faisal on the busiest road of the city, the Pakistan Air Force Museum was formally inaugurated on the 14th of August in 1997 by the then Air Cheif Marshall, Abbas Khattak, who was the Chief of the Air Staff at the time. The museum was then opened for the public in October of the same year. Around 30 aircraft are on display here, and more exhibits are added periodically to keep the museum updated. Historic photographs and paintings depicting the feats of the Pakistan Air Force also decorate the indoor galleries.

Archives Gallery

Located in a hangar on-site, the Archives Gallery is the most famous because it contains the Viking, which was Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s aircraft. The aircraft is open for visitors, and you can tour the interior and see how the Founder of the Nation travelled in style, nearly 70 years ago. An Indian Gnat that force-landed at Pasroor during the 1965 war is also on display here. The Archives Gallery is also home to six sub-galleries. These include:

• History of Aerial Warfare (up to the modern times)
• Fighter Jets from around the World
• Shauhada of the 1965 and 1971 Wars
• Heroes from the 1965 and 1971 Wars

The most recent addition to the exhibits is a statue of the Indian Air Force’s Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, along with parts of his Mig-21 aircraft, which was shot down near the Pakistan-Indian border.

Facilities at the Pakistan Air Force Museum

It’s not all history and no play at the PAF Museum. The grounds are also home to a Play Land, where rides of different types are available for children of all ages, along with food stalls. You can also enjoy a tasty meal at the outdoor cafeteria and take back home some toys and miniature aircraft replicas from the Souvenir Shop.

Along with hosting small festivals, the Pakistan Air Force Museum also contains a Convention Centre that is available for hire for small private events. Don’t forget to visit the Pakistan Air Force Women Association (PAFWA) Shop during your trip to the Pakistan Air Force Museum. PAFWA is a welfare organisation that works towards the provision of education, financial, and social aid for low-paid employees of the PAF, along with participating in relief work after natural calamities like floods or earthquakes. The PAFWA Shop contains a lot of handicrafts and artefacts that can make great gifts for your loved ones and will help you donate money to a good cause.

Timings and Ticket Prices for the PAF Museum

The PAF Museum is open for the public daily, from 9 am to 9 pm, with the ticket price being PKR 60 per person (ages 3 and above). People from military families and students with ID cards are charged PKR 40 for admission into the park. Children under 3 years of age and senior citizens above 60 years of age are allowed to enter the premises free of charge. 

A separate parking fee is applicable to your vehicle. All cars, jeeps, and vans, must pay a parking fee of PKR 50 per vehicle, while the parking fee for motorcycles is PKR 30. Buses and coasters will have to pay a parking fee of PKR 200 upon admission.

Around 4,000 people visit the museum during the weekdays, while 15,000 individuals head towards the park on the weekends. Many schools also plan their tours to the park throughout the year.

A visit to a Museum

          There are many museums all over the world. Numerous museum near there in India itself. Most of the museums are specific and have items pertaining to a particular field or area. Such are Railway Museum. Air force museum, doll Museum, status Museum and so on.

          Last Sunday, I went to see the museum pertaining to the Archaeological Survey of India. It comprised a number of rooms. Each room showed items concerning a particular period in the history of India or pertaining to a particular region of India.

          The most impressive items that virtually enthralled me were the items pertaining to the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro civilization. Models and real findings from this civilization were displayed in elaborate showcases. Besides, there were charts, pictures and posters depicting disparate items.

          I was greatly impressed by the model of the Great Bath and the wonderful drainage system in the ancient urban civilization. Then I looked at toys of animals, men and birds with great curiosity.

          I saw many other things and when I returned home after about two hours, I was full of new knowledge and somewhat whetted hunger for attaining more of it elsewhere.

A Visit To A Museum

A museum is a collection of curiosities. It means a storehouse of objects, related to art , science, history on education. A museum is a place of great interest. It is highly educative. A visit to the Museum is an education in itself.

There are a number o museums in every country. In India there are museums in many big towns. There is a museum at Sarnath. This place is about two miles  from Banaras. Last year, I got a chance to see ti. Sarnath is a well – known place in Indian history. In the past, there were many Buddhist monasteries here.

The museum is divided into many sections. I passed gate of the museum. Soon I found myself in the Art Section. It was well decorated. There I saw many big and old statues of Buddha and Buddhist saints. These statues were thousands of years old I saw the history of India written on stone. I also saw some pillars. On them were recorded the edicts of Ashoka. These things made me think of the past. In this section I also saw beautiful paintings and clay models. They threw much light on  the people’s lives in the past.

Then I moved on to another section. There is saw many old relics. I saw dresses worn by the Rajput soldiers in the past. I was very much surprised to see the weapons used by Indian warriors. Among these weapons were old swords, shields , lances and armour. They were very nicely arranged. A picture   of the Rajput glory and chivalry seemed to float before my eyes when I had a look at shields , daggers, swords, weapons, ornaments, and armours that were own by the Rajput warrior sand women.

The golden age of the Guptas seemed to return when I stepped into hall where statues images and engravings to the Gupta period were artistically put up. I could catch a beautiful glimpse of our ancient heritage and civilization from the various articles that had been dug out of the mounds at Harappa and Mohen- jo – daro. There was a beautifully embroidered coat of cotton cloth which showed that our ancestors, about 6000 years ago, knew the art of making cloth.  

Then I went to the History section. On one table I saw some great books of the past. They were written on bhojpatra. On another table I saw many things belonging to the times of Buddha. They reminded me of Buddha and his teachings.

At last I went to the Cottage Industries Section. In one corner, I saw old things of clay. They were beautiful and useful. They were more attractive than the things of clay of today. In this section, I also saw the work of the blacksmith, the weaver and the carpenter. All this work proved the great skill of the artisans of the past.

After about two hours, I left the museum. It is a store- house of knowledge of past ages. It helped me to know the art, literature, manners , customs and dresses of the people of the past. A visit to Museum was very inspiring. A visit to the Museum brings  a vivid beautiful picture of our rich heritage before us. It reminds us of our worthy great past. The museum provides instruction  with amusement. Here, one reads history ‘without tears’

Museums are custodians of the past. These non-profit institutions collect, conserve, research, communicate and exhibit relics of the past. These tangible and intangible objects in the museums offer a fascinating insight into the heritage of humanity, our environment and the world. These institutions, which are in the service of society, are a very important source of knowledge and education.

Last year, my parents and I went on a visit to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. It was a very thrilling experience for me to visit such an extraordinary place. I learnt a lot about the history of our country and the environment we live in. The museum had a lot of exhibits on different cultures, animals, birds and even eminent personalities.

My Experience with a Visit to a Museum

The museum, which is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was first opened in 1910. The museum, which is spread over 1.5 million square feet, houses over 145 million specimens. The exhibits include specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and artefacts of human culture from across the world. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is the largest natural history collection in the world.

There are several different exhibitions inside the museum. They include the:

• Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals: The Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals comes under the National Gem and Mineral Collection. The Hall has over 15,000 gems, 350,000 minerals, 45,000 known meteorite samples and 300,000 rock and ore specimen samples. The Hall is also home to the famous Hope Diamond and the Star of Asia Sapphire.
• Hall of Human Origins: This Hall is dedicated to the understanding and discovery of the origins of humans. The exhibit includes over 76 human skulls, an interactive family tree that shows over 6 million years of evolution and more.
• Hall of Paleobiology/Dinosaurs: This exhibit in the Hall of Dinosaurs includes fossilized skeletons and cast models of several species of dinosaurs. I particularly enjoyed watching the T-Rex exhibit and the Triceratops exhibit in virtual motion.
• Hall of Mammals: The Smithsonian’s Hall of Mammals exhibits one of the largest mammal collections in the world. The specimens are displayed as works of modern art in their environment. I enjoyed learning how mammals have evolved and adapted over the years.
• Insect Zoo: The insect zoo is a fascinating place to visit. The hall has been designed to show insects in their natural habitat. It helps you learn about how each insect has adapted themselves to their environment.
• Ocean Hall: The Ocean Hall was one of my favourite exhibits in the museum. The museum has over over 80 million specimens in its collection. It also has a 1,500-US-gallon (5,700 l) aquarium. My favourite exhibit in this hall was the female giant squid displayed in the centre of the hall.
• African Voices: This exhibit is dedicated to the people, the culture, the diversity and the natural environment of Africa.
• Butterflies + Plants: Partners In Evolution: The Butterflies and Plants hall was another wonderful exhibit in the museum. I especially enjoyed spending time in the live butterfly pavilion.
• Hall of Bones: The Hall of Bones is a display of a variety of vertebrate skeletons.

The museum also has an activity room for families and students on the first floor and a bird exhibit on the lower level.

I loved visiting the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. It was a treasure trove of information and a wonderful experience for me and my family.
